Abstract
It is highly desirable to employ n-type polymers as electron transporting layers (ETLs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their good electron mobility, high hydrophobicity, and simplicity of film forming. In this research, the capability of three n-type donor-acceptor1 -donor-acceptor2 (D-A1 -D-A2 ) conjugated polymers (pBTT, pBTTz, and pSNT) is first explored as ETLs because these polymers possess electron mobilities as high as 0.92, 0.46, and 4.87 cm2 (Vs)-1 in n-channel organic transistors, respectively. The main structural difference among pBTT, pBTTz, and pSNT is the position of sp2 -nitrogen atoms (sp2 -N) in the polymer main chains. Therefore, the effect of different substitution positions on the PSC performances is comprehensively studied. The as-fabricated p-i-n PSCs with pBTT, pBTTz, and pSNT as ETLs show the maximum photoconversion efficiencies of 12.8%, 14.4%, and 12.0%, respectively. To be highlighted, pBTTz-based device can maintain 80% of its stability after ten days due to its good hydrophobicity, which is further confirmed by a contact angle technique. More importantly, the pBTTz-based device shows a neglected hysteresis. This study reveals that the n-type polymers can be promising candidates as ETLs to approach solution-processed highly-efficient inverted PSCs.

Abstract
The demand for the development of more promising n-type semiconducting polymers with excellent electron mobilities and air stabilities is growing fast. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of new dual imide-functionalized derivative-based regioregular D-A1-D-A2 copolymers with different side chains (namely, PNT-R, R = 2-decyltetradecyl (DT), 2-octadecyldodecyl (OD), and 2-hexyldecyl (HD)). These new polymers PNT-R showed strong electron affinities with deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels down to -4.01 eV, indicating that they are promising electron-transporting materials. To optimize the electron mobility, side-chain engineering was adopted. Thus, the effects of the side-chain length on their optoelectronic and charge-transport properties as well as the performances of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) were systematically investigated. Shortening the side-chain length significantly expanded the absorption range, deepened the LUMO energy level, strengthened the molecular packing properties, and developed more crystalline microstructures in the solid state, as evidenced by the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry, synchrotron two-dimensional grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and atomic force microscopy measurements. Consequently, the highest electron mobility of 1.05 cm2 V-1 s-1 was achieved in PNT-HD-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Also, PNT-R polymers were successfully applied as electron acceptors in all-PSCs. In good agreement with the OTFT results, the highest power conversion efficiency of 6.62% was obtained for the PNT-HD-blend film due to its excellent short-circuit current ( Jsc) value (12.07 mA cm-2), which was much higher than that of the PNT-DT- and PNT-OD-based all-PSCs (7.67 and 10.19 mA cm-2, respectively). By further investigating the dependence of the Jsc and open-circuit voltage ( Voc) on the illuminated light intensity ( P), the high Jsc value of the PNT-HD-based device was found to originate from its highly suppressed mono- and bimolecular recombination as well as efficient exciton dissociation and charge transfer at the donor-acceptor interfaces. Overall, this study provides insights into the naphthalenediimide-based regioregular D-A1-D-A2 copolymers used in all-PSCs and offers important design guidelines for future development of n-type semiconducting polymers.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers have attracted broad interest from synthetic chemists and device developers in optoelectronic fields. In this study, we report a blue-light organic photodetector (OPD) based on our low-band and ambipolar PSeN polymer. Besides high stability, the device has excellent color-selective property in the visible-light region. At the bias of -3 V, the ratio of the external quantum efficiency (EQE) in blue to red is more than 10:1. Meanwhile, the device also shows very low dark current density of ∼21 nA/cm2 and high EQE more than 100% for blue light at the bias of -3 V. Then, the mechanism of the high EQE in single-sensitive layer structure devices is analyzed by considering the activation energy of traps and carrier injection. Furthermore, for portable purposes, a flexible blue-light OPD is designed. This OPD shows a great orthogonal light response to blue and orange contents in a white light source and will be a potential candidate in a two-channel visible-light communication system.

Abstract
Covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) thin films are fabricated by a highly efficient [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction of aniline-substituted alkyne and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) moieties. Polystyrene bearing aniline-substituted alkyne side chains and TCNQ polyester were prepared as precursor polymers, then sequentially deposited and fixed by covalent bonds on an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrate. The successful alternate growth of the films was demonstrated by many techniques including absorption spectroscopy, surface roughness, and redox activities. Interestingly, the water contact angles of the film surface were dependent on the side chains of the polystyrene derivatives. When hydrophilic triethylene glycol was employed, the surface hydrophilicity was similar to that of the TCNQ polyester. In contrast, the use of hydrophobic n-hexyl groups resulted in a significant difference in the water contact angles between the polystyrene and TCNQ polyester. A similar difference occurred when the Ag+ ion recognition was studied by soaking the LbL films in aqueous solutions. The LbL films constructed from the polystyrene with triethylene glycol chains displayed a more rapid and significant recognition of Ag+ ions than those constructed from the polystyrene with n-hexyl chains.

Abstract
The [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) between N,N-dialkylaniline-substituted alkynes and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) is employed to fabricate functional cross-linked polymer films containing the intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) chromophores at the cross-linking points. Polystyrene bearing N,N-dialkylaniline-substituted alkynes (P1) and TCNQ polyester (P2) are mixed in tetrahydrofuran (THF), then this solution is spray-coated onto an indium tin oxide or glass plate. Heating to 100 °C initiates the [2+2] CA-RE reaction, resulting in the formation of cross-linked polymer films. The reaction progress and completion are evaluated by monitoring the CT absorption band and cyano vibration peaks. The resulting cross-linked polymer films show reversible cathodic electrochromism between the neutral and anion radical states. In addition, they also display the visual detection behavior of protic acids and Lewis acids, such as Ag+ ions. Accordingly, the Ag+ ion-loaded polymer films are prepared, and their antibacterial activities are studied. As more Ag+ ions are loaded, the CT band more bathochromically shifts and more potent antibacterial activities are obtained. Therefore, the antibacterial activity of the polymer films can be visually recognized by the film colors. Furthermore, the loaded Ag+ ions can be released from the polymer films by application of an electrochemical potential.

Abstract
A highly sensitive catecholamine (CA) sensor was created using a biointerface layer composed of a biopolymer and a potentiometric detection device. For the detection of CAs, 3-aminophenylboronic acid (3-NH2-PBA) was reacted with the carboxyl side chain of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-dopa, LD) and the PBA-modified l-dopa was directly copolymerized with LD on an Au electrode, resulting in a 3.5 nm thick PBA-modified poly(PBA-LD/LD) layer-coated Au electrode. By connecting the PBA-LD-coated Au electrode to a field-effect transistor (FET), the molecular charge changes at the biointerface of the Au electrode, which was caused by di-ester binding of the PBA-CA complex, were transduced into gate surface potential changes. Effective CAs included LD, dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (EP). The surface potential of the PBA-LD-coated Au changed after the addition of 40 nM of each CA solution; notably, the PBA-LD-coated Au showed a higher sensitivity to LD because the surface potential change could already be observed after 1 nM of LD was added. The fundamental parameter analyses of the PBA-LD to CA affinity from the surface potential shift against each CA concentration indicated the highest affinity to LD (binding constant (Ks): 1.68 × 106 M-1, maximum surface potential shift (Vmax): 182 mV). Moreover, the limit of detection for each CA was 3.5 nM in LD, 12.0 nM in DA, 7.5 nM in NE, and 12.6 nM in EP. From these results, it is concluded that the poly(PBA-LD/LD)-coated gate FET could become a useful biosensor for neurotransmitters, hormones, and early detection of Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
While high-performance p-type semiconducting polymers are widely reported, their n-type counterparts are still rare in terms of quantity and quality. Here, an improved Stille polymerization protocol using chlorobenzene as the solvent and palladium(0)/copper(I) as the catalyst is developed to synthesize high-quality n-type polymers with number-average molecular weight up to 105 g mol-1 . Furthermore, by sp2 -nitrogen atoms (sp2 -N) substitution, three new n-type polymers, namely, pBTTz, pPPT, and pSNT, are synthesized, and the effect of different sp2 -N substitution positions on the device performances is studied for the first time. It is found that the incorporation of sp2 -N into the acceptor units rather than the donor units results in superior crystalline microstructures and higher electron mobilities. Furthermore, an amine-tailed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is smoothly formed on a Si/SiO2 substrate by a simple spin-coating technique, which can facilitate the accumulation of electrons and lead to more perfect unipolar n-type transistor performances. Therefore, a remarkably high unipolar electron mobility up to 5.35 cm2 V-1 s-1 with a low threshold voltage (≈1 V) and high on/off current ratio of ≈107 is demonstrated for the pSNT-based devices, which are among the highest values for unipolar n-type semiconducting polymers.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a linear-type dibromocarbazoledioxazine (CZ) derivative as a new precursor for semiconducting polymers. The chemical structures of the CZ unit and its polymers with thiophene or thienothiophene spacers (namely, PCZT and PCZTT) were fully characterized. PCZT and PCZTT possessed similar medium optical band gap (Eoptg) and electrochemical band gap (Ecvg) of around 1.70 eV estimated from the onset absorption and electrochemical redox potentials of the thin films, respectively. Computational density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the backbone of the PCZT might be highly twisted, while that of PCZTT could be very planar. The effect of different backbone geometries on the charge–transport properties was studied by using thin film transistors (TFTs). The TFT device based on PCZTT showed a four times higher hole mobility as compared to that based on PCZT. The superior TFT performances of PCZTT were reasonably attributed to its edge-on backbone packing orientations toward the Si substrate revealed by the grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), which was favorable for in-plane charge transport in the TFT devices. A linear-type dibromocarbazoledioxazine (CZ) derivative and its two polymers are newly designed and synthesized. Structure–property relationship studies reveal that PCZTT shows a four times higher hole mobility than PCZT.![]()

Abstract
The ever increasing demand for clean energy has encouraged researchers to intensively investigate environmentally friendly photovoltaic devices. Inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are very promising due to their potentials of easy fabrication processes and high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Designing hole-transporting materials (HTMs) is one of the key factors in achieving the high PCEs of PSCs. We now report the synthesis of two types of carbazole-based polymers, namely 3,6-Cbz-EDOT and 2,7-Cbz-EDOT, by Stille polycondensation. Despite the same chemical composition, 3,6-Cbz-EDOT and 2,7-Cbz-EDOT displayed different optical and electrochemical properties due to the different connectivity mode of the carbazole unit. Therefore, their performances as hole-transporting polymeric materials in the PSCs were also different. The device based on 2,7-Cbz-EDOT showed better photovoltaic properties with the PCE of 4.47% than that based on 3,6-Cbz-EDOT. This could be due to its more suitable highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level and higher hole mobility.

Abstract
The P3HT:PCBM (P3HT = poly(3-hexylthiophene, PCBM = phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells using the AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers (A = polystyrene derivative with donor-acceptor units (PTCNE) and B = P3HT) as compatibilizers were fabricated. Under the optimized blend ratio of the block copolymer, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was enhanced. This PCE enhancement was clearly related to the increased short-circuit current (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF). The incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE) measurement suggested that the P3HT crystallinity was improved upon addition of the block copolymers. The increased P3HT crystallinity was consistent with the increased photovoltaic parameters, such as J(sc), FF, and consequently the PCE. The surface energies of these block copolymers suggested their thermodynamically stable location at the interface of P3HT:PCBM, showing the efficient compatibilizing performance, resulting in enlarging and fixing the interfacial area and suppressing the recombination of the generated carriers. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) results confirmed the superior compatibilizing performance of the ABA triblock copolymer when compared to the AB diblock copolymer by the fact that, after blending the ABA triblock copolymer in the P3HT:PCBM system, the enhanced crystallinity of matrix P3HT was observed in the excluded areas of the less-aggregated PCBM domains, changing the P3HT crystalline domain orientation from "edge-on" to "isotropic". This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first sequential effect (AB vs ABA) of the block copolymers on the compatibilizing performances based on BHJ OPV device systems.
