Abstract
How to design intelligent carriers for delivering drugs to the target accurately and releasing drug timely with the help of a certain environmental stimulus is still a challenge in tumor treatment. In this work, pH-sensitive bola-type triblock copolymers, composed of poly(2-(diisopropylamino) ethylmethacrylate) (PDPA) and methoxy-poly(ethyleneglycol) (mPEG), were synthesized. Liposomes containing these copolymers (Liposome@Bola) have been prepared by simply mixing the copolymer with phospholipids and cholesterol. From the fluorescence polarization measurement, the stability of Liposome@Bola was found to be increased a lot comparing to the pure liposome. As a result, the doxorubicin (DOX) leakage of the former was restrained in neutral environment. However, when pH decreased from 7.4 to 6.0, DOX released percentage had been increased 30-60 points, which was heavily depend on the phospholipid composition. Furthermore, the size effects of PEG and PDPA segments were also investigated. These results indicated the synthesized bola-type copolymers improved the pH-controllability of drug release of liposome, i.e., increased the difference between the release amount under pH 7.4 and pH 6.0. The bola-type copolymer exhibited a good potential application in smartly controlling drug delivery system.

Abstract
The present experiment evaluated the influence of moisture level and anaerobic fermentation on aerobic stability of total mixed ration (TMR). The dynamic changes in chemical composition and microbial population that occur after air exposure were examined, and the species of yeast associated with the deterioration process were also identified in both non-fermented and fermented TMR to deepen the understanding of aerobic deterioration. The moisture levels of TMR in this experiment were adjusted to 400 g/kg (low moisture level, LML), 450 g/kg (medium moisture level, MML), and 500 g/kg (high moisture level, HML), and both non-fermented and 56-d-fermented TMR were subjected to air exposure to determine aerobic stability. Aerobic deterioration resulted in high losses of nutritional components and largely reduced dry matter digestibility. Non-fermented TMR deteriorated during 48 h of air exposure and the HML treatment was more aerobically unstable. On dry matter (DM) basis, yeast populations significantly increased from 10(7) to 10(10) cfu/g during air exposure, and Candida ethanolica was the predominant species during deterioration in non-fermented TMR. Fermented TMR exhibited considerable resistance to aerobic deterioration. Spoilage was only observed in the HML treatment and its yeast population increased dramatically to 10(9) cfu/g DM when air exposure progressed to 30 d. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the sole yeast species isolated when spoilage occurred. These results confirmed that non-fermented and fermented TMR with a HML are more prone to spoilage, and fermented TMR has considerable resistance to aerobic deterioration. Yeasts can trigger aerobic deterioration in both non-fermented and fermented TMR. C. ethanolica may be involved in the spoilage of non-fermented TMR and the vigorous growth of Z. bailii can initiate aerobic deterioration in fermented TMR.

Abstract
Prevalence of disseminated Penicillium marneffei infection is not known in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors for disseminated P. marneffei infection in HIV-infected patients during 2004-11 in Guangzhou, China. We tested 8131 archived HIV-infected patient serum samples for P. marneffei-specific mannoprotein (Mp1p) antigen using a highly sensitive and specific ELISA that we previously established. The CD4 count of 2686 cases was determined by flow cytometry. Logistic regression was used to assess predictors of Mp1p antigenaemia. The overall prevalence of disseminated penicilliosis as detected by positive serum Mp1p antigen was 9.36% (761/8131), in good concordance with Platelia™ Aspergillus immunoassay. During 2004-11, the prevalence increased to a peak of 12.58% (158/1256) in 2010 and decreased in 2011. Penicilliosis was strongly associated with progression from HIV to AIDS (OR 4.66, 95% CI 3.94-5.51, p <0.001) and humidity (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.03, p 0.002). Disseminated penicilliosis occurred mainly during the rainy seasons (p <0.001). For 2686 cases with known CD4 count, logistic regression showed that CD4 count of <200 cells/μL was a risk factor for penicilliosis (OR 2.90, 95% CI 1.10-7.66, p 0.032), especially when it was <50 cells/μL (OR 24.26, 95% CI 10.63-55.36, p <0.001) during which 28.06% of patients developed disseminated penicilliosis. In conclusion, approximately 9.36% of the HIV-infected patients in our study developed disseminated penicilliosis. Rapid diagnosis may be achieved by performing serological surveillance for Mp1p antigenaemia as a routine procedure for all HIV-infected patients with CD4 count of <50 cells/μL.

Abstract
Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) regulate the proliferation and differentiation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in brain; however, the mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of mGluR3 on the proliferation of human embryonic neural progenitor cells (NPCs), the expression of cyclin D1 and the activation of signaling pathways of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). The results showed that mGluR3 agonist N-Acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) increased the proliferation of NPCs by increasing cell activity, diameter of neurospheres and cell division. In addition, mGluR3 siRNA decreased the NPC proliferation. The protein expressions of cyclin D1 increased with NAAG treatment and decreased after siRNA treatment. It was also found that activation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK) signaling pathways were involved in the proliferation of NPCs. NAAG increased phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and JNK2 levels, and meanwhile p-p38 level decreased; but p-ERK1/2 and p-JNK2 levels decreased after siRNA treatment, and p-p38 level increased. ERK1/2 inhibitor U0126 and JNK2 inhibitor SP600125 attenuated the increase of proliferation induced by NAAG. These findings demonstrated that mGluR3 promoted the proliferation of human embryonic cortical NPCs and increased cyclin D1 expression by activating ERK1/2 and JNK2 signaling pathways in vitro, suggesting that mGluR3 may be a target molecule for regulating NPC proliferation in brain development.

Abstract
AIM Colonic epithelial dysplasia is deemed the precursor lesion of cancer arising in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It has been suggested that many dysplastic lesions could be endoscopically detected to obtain target biopsies, leading to better yield. However, the clinical impact of a diagnosis of dysplasia may be hampered by a significant degree of histological and endoscopic intra-observer and inter-observer variability. This study aimed to evaluate intra-observer and inter-observer variability in the microscopic diagnosis of dysplasia in IBD and correlate endoscopic and histological findings. METHOD In total, 158 cases of ulcerative colitis and 14 of Crohn's disease with dysplasia were selected from a pathology database. Slides were blindly reviewed twice by two expert gastrointestinal pathologists. Results of endoscopic examinations were extracted from the reports. The degree of intra-observer and inter-observer variability was determined by kappa statistics. RESULTS Overall, there was an excellent degree of histopathological inter-observer agreement (κ = 0.786). The lowest level of agreement in the dysplasia group was for indefinite dysplasia (κ = 0.251). Negative and high grade dysplasia diagnosis reached the highest level of agreement with κ values of 0.822 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.673-0.971] and 1.00 (95% CI 0.850-1.149), respectively. Intra-observer agreement was good and increased during the latter period of the study (κ = 0.734, 95% CI 0.642-0.826). Endoscopic-histological correlation was poor among the negative endoscopies, as up to 43% of cases were diagnosed with at least focal high grade dysplasia. The endoscopic-histological correlation improved when evaluating suspicious endoscopic lesions. CONCLUSION Dysplasia is reliably diagnosed by expert gastrointestinal pathologists but has poor correlation with an endoscopic diagnosis of dysplasia.

Abstract
Although Cr segregation at the free Fe surface is weak, noticeable segregation of Cr at the He bubble surface in Fe has recently been observed. To understand the driving force for Cr segregation, we have carried out first-principles density functional theory calculations on the energetics of solute Cr atoms at the He bubble surface, which was modeled by a Fe/He interface. We find that both the compressive stress produced by the He bubble and the direct interfacial interaction promote Cr segregation from inside the bulk to the bubble surface, along with reduced spin polarization. Electronic structure analyses show that at the Fe/He interface, Cr is more compressible than Fe due to having more empty e(g) orbitals and, accordingly, the Fe surface gets energetically more favorable for Cr than in the bulk. On the other hand, the segregation of Cr increases the charge density at the bubble surface, and thus hinders assimilation of further He atoms.

Abstract
Dioxins are a family of chemical compounds that has received considerable attention, both historically and currently. This article reviews scientific field studies that examine the relationship between living on soil contaminated with dioxins and the level of dioxins in people's serum, with an emphasis on the University of Michigan Dioxin Exposure Study (UMDES), the largest and most comprehensive study of its kind. These studies conclude that the levels of dioxins in serum are most strongly correlated with age, gender, body mass index, weight loss, breast feeding, and smoking. Levels of dioxins in soil are not significant predictors for dioxin concentrations in serum. The increase in serum dioxin levels that is seen with age results from historic exposure and does not represent ongoing exposure. Based on the scientific field studies conducted to date, it appears that, in the absence of the consumption of contaminated animal products, there is little evidence of ongoing exposure from contaminated soil.

Abstract
Using ab initio density functional theory calculations, we have investigated the influence of Mo, V and Pd on the H-induced grain boundary embrittlement in Fe. We find that, in the high impurity concentration systems, all of the three alloying elements facilitate H embrittlement at the Σ3 (111) [Formula: see text] grain boundary in Fe. The calculated binary effects of the H-X (X = Mo, V, Pd) couples are 0.063, 0.074 and 0.040 eV, respectively. On the other hand, in the large unit cell with low impurity concentration, both Mo and V can facilitate H embrittlement, and the binary effects of pairs are 0.152 and 0.164 eV, respectively. While Pd reduces the H embrittlement on the cohesion of the Fe grain boundary with the binary effect of - 0.1 eV. The H-X (X = Mo, V, Pd) interactions are interpreted by electronic structure analyses.

Abstract
Annual vinca (Catharanthus roseus), also known as Madagascar periwinkle, has been cultivated as a major color crop for landscape and as an herbal medicine. This plant performs well in dry, warm locations with full sun or partial shade. Two-month-old diseased plants (cv. First Kiss Blueberry) with blighted leaves and stems were received from a local nursery in Suffolk, VA in May 2009. The disease began with dark, greenish black lesions on young leaves. Lesions gradually became tan or brown and leaves wilted and curled and finally turned necrotic. Brown, sunken lesions beginning at the branching points were typical symptoms on blighted stems and shoots. Blighted areas and spots were approximately 30 to 90 mm long and 20 to 40 mm wide on leaves and 40 mm long on stems. A Phytophthora species previously unknown to attack this plant was consistently isolated from diseased leaves and stems, and resultant isolates were grown on PARP-V8 agar. These isolates produced papillate sporangia on umbellate sympodium. Sporangia were mostly ellipsoid with a length/breadth ratio of >1.8 and tapered base; they were caducous with a long pedicel (usually >50 μm). These isolates also produced chlamydospores that averaged 31 μm in diameter. The isolates were identified as Phytophthora tropicalis by morphology. The identity was confirmed by DNA fingerprinting (1) and sequence analysis of ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (GenBank Accession No. GQ478707). For pathogenicity studies, a zoospore suspension of 1,100 spores per milliliter was sprayed onto the foliage of 50-day-old healthy plants of the same cultivar grown in pine bark medium in six 10-cm-diameter plastic containers with a hand mister in the evening until runoff. Control plants were sprayed with tap water. Plants were placed in a tray containing a small amount of water and enclosed in plastic tents overnight to facilitate infection. The tents were removed the following morning, and plants were kept in a greenhouse under natural light and watered as needed. Within 4 days, all six inoculated plants developed foliar symptoms similar to what was observed on the diseased plant samples from the production nursery. The pathogen was reisolated from infected leaves and stems and its identity was confirmed by colony PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism (3). The pathogenicity test was repeated once with the same results. Phytophthora aerial blight is a common destructive disease of annual vinca, which is usually caused by P. nicotianae. To our knowledge, this is the first report of foliar blight caused by P. tropicalis on annual vinca in Virginia. According to the head grower who submitted the disease samples, this new disease caused 10% crop loss of annual vinca this past spring. P. tropicalis was previously reported to attack ornamental shrubs, including Pieris japonica and Rhododendron catawbiense (2). This study indicates that P. tropicalis could be a potential threat to herbaceous annual crops as well. References: (1) M. E. Gallegly and C. X. Hong. Abstract
Fibrosis mediated by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a common cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) failure. In a model of peritoneal fibrosis, we tested the effect of Smad7, an inhibitor of TGF-beta signaling, using an ultrasound-microbubble-mediated delivery system. Rats were given daily PD for 4 weeks and received Smad7 or control plasmid transfer. The ultrasound technique enhanced Smad7 expression in a dose-dependent manner in more than 80% of the peritoneal cells after 3 days. The expression decreased by 14 days, but this was corrected by a second gene transfer. The overexpression of Smad7 substantially inhibited Smad2/3 activation, TGF-beta, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, extracellular matrix, and myofibroblast mRNA, and protein expression in the peritoneal cells. The decreased peritoneal injury included the rise of mass transfer of glucose, a reduction of the ultrafiltration rate, and fibrotic thickening. Our studies suggest that ultrasound-mediated Smad7 gene delivery may be useful in the prevention or treatment of dialysis-induced peritoneal fibrosis.

Abstract
Brain aging often results in cognitive impairment and is considered to be a major risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. Earlier studies reported inflammatory responses in aged brain that could contribute to age-related neurodegeneration. Recently, innate immune receptors such as toll-like receptors (TLRs), so far implicated in defense against microorganisms, have been linked to pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, we asked whether the transcription of TLRs (1-9) and CD14, could also be altered in physiological brain aging. Using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we indeed observed that TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR5, TLR7 and CD14 expression was up-regulated in mouse brain in correlation with age. In contrast, transcriptions of TLR3, TLR6 and TLR8 were unchanged and the one of TLR9 was down-regulated. In situ hybridization further confirmed these results and identified the cellular source of TLR2 and TLR7 as mononuclear phagocytes. Together, this first systematic analysis demonstrates altered regulation of those innate immune receptors even in normal brain aging, which might be of relevance for understanding susceptibility to neurodegenerative processes associated with aging.

Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1997 revised the 1-hr ozone (O3) National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) to one based on an 8-hr average, resulting in potential nonattainment status for substantial portions of the eastern United States. The regulatory process provides for the development of a state implementation plan that includes a demonstration that the projected future O3 concentrations will be at or below the NAAQS based on photochemical modeling and analytical techniques. In this study, four photochemical modeling systems, based on two photochemical models, Community Model for Air Quality and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions, and two emissions processing models, Sparse Matrix Optimization Kernel for Emissions and Emissions Modeling System, were applied to the eastern United States, with emphasis on the northeastern Ozone Transport Region in terms of their response to oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic carbon-focused controls on the estimated design values. With the 8-hr O3 NAAQS set as a bright-line test, it was found that a given area could be termed as being in or out of attainment of the NAAQS depending upon the modeling system. This suggests the need to provide an estimate of model-to-model uncertainty in the relative reduction factor (RRF) for a better understanding of the uncertainty in projecting the status of an area's attainment. Results indicate that the model-to-model differences considered in this study introduce

Abstract
Biological denitrification was studied in an SBR to investigate the performance. The experimental results showed that granular sludge with high activity and good settling ability can be developed smoothly in thereactor. With the granular sludge, high nitrate loading rate (0.48 kg NO3-N dm(-3) d(-1)) and removal efficiency (more than 99%) can be achieved. Scanning electronic microscope examination showed that only rod-shape bacteria existed on and within the granules, which confirmed indirectly that filamentous bacteria do not utilize nitrate and nitrite as electron acceptors. SBR is an alternative and effective technology for biological denitrification.

Upsilon production and polarization in p p macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:161802. Abstract
We report on measurements of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) differential cross sections (d(2)sigma/dp(T)dy)(/y/<0.4), as well as on the Upsilon(1S) polarization in p p macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using a sample of 77+/-3 pb(-1) collected by the collider detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay Upsilon-->mu(+)mu(-). The measured angular distribution of the muons in the Upsilon(1S) rest frame is consistent with unpolarized meson production.

Diffractive dijet production at sqrt[s] = 630 and 1800 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:151802. Abstract
We report a measurement of the diffractive structure function F(D)(jj) of the antiproton obtained from a study of dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The ratio of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 630 GeV to F(D)(jj) obtained from a similar measurement at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV is compared with expectations from QCD factorization and other theoretical predictions. We also report a measurement of the xi ( x-Pomeron) and beta ( x of parton in Pomeron) dependence of F(D)(jj) at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. In the region 0.035<xi<0.095, /t/<1 GeV2, and beta<0.5, F(D)(jj)(beta,xi) is found to be of the form beta(-1.0+/-0.1)xi(-0.9+/-0.1), which obeys beta-xi factorization.

Search for new heavy particles in the WZ0 final state in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:071806. [PMID: 11863887 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.88.071806] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/02/2001] [Indexed: 05/23/2023]
Abstract
We present the first general search for new heavy particles, X, which decay via X --> WZ0 --> e(nu)+jj as a function of M(X) and Gamma(X) in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV. No evidence is found for production of X in 110 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. General cross section limits are set at the 95% C.L. as a function of mass and width of the new particle. The results are further interpreted as mass limits on the production of new heavy charged vector bosons which decay via W' --> WZ0 in an extended gauge model as a function of the width, Gamma(W'), and mixing factor between the W' and the standard model W bosons.

Abstract
We report a study of the decays B0 --> J/psiK(*)0pi(+)pi(-), which involve the creation of a uu or dd quark pair in addition to a b -->c(cs) decay. The data sample consists of 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995. We measure the branching fractions to be B(B0 --> J/psiK(*0)pi(+)pi(-)) = (6.6 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(B0 --> J/psiK0pi(+)pi(-)) = (10.3 +/- 3.3 +/- 1.5)x10(-4). Evidence is seen for contributions from psi(2S)K(*)0, J/psiK0rho(0), J/psiK(*+)pi(-), and J/psiK1(1270).

Search for gluinos and scalar quarks in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV using the missing energy plus multijets signature. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:041801. Abstract
We have performed a search for gluinos (g) and scalar quarks (q) in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and three or more jets, a characteristic signature in R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models. The analysis has been performed "blind," in that the inspection of the signal region is made only after the predictions from standard model backgrounds have been calculated. Comparing the data with predictions of constrained supersymmetric models, we exclude gluino masses below 195 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.), independent of the squark mass. For the case m(q) approximately m(g), gluino masses below 300 GeV/c2 are excluded.

Measurement of the strong coupling constant from inclusive jet production at the Tevatron pp collider. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 88:042001. Abstract
We report a measurement of the strong coupling constant, alpha(s)(MZ), extracted from inclusive jet production in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1800 GeV. The QCD prediction for the evolution of alpha(s) with jet transverse energy ET is tested over the range 40<ET<450 GeV using ET for the renormalization scale. The data show good agreement with QCD in the region below 250 GeV. The value of alpha(s) at the mass of the Z0 boson averaged over the range 40<ET<250 GeV is found to be alpha(s)(MZ) = 0.1178+/-0.0001(stat)+0.0081(-0.0095)(expt. syst). The associated theoretical uncertainties are mainly due to the choice of renormalization scale ((+6%)(-4%)) and input parton distribution functions (5%).

Search for gluinos and squarks using like-sign dileptons in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2001; 87:251803. Abstract
We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton ( e(+/-)e(+/-), e(+/-)mu(+/-), mu(+/-)mu(+/-)) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb(-1) of data in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV collected during 1992-1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (tilde g) and squarks (tilde q) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tan beta = 2 and mu = -800 GeV/c(2), we set 95% confidence level limits of M(tilde g)>221 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde g) approximately M(tilde q), and M(tilde q)>168 GeV/c(2) for M(tilde q)>>M(tilde g), both with small variation as a function of mu.

Abstract
We report the first observation of diffractive J/psi(--> mu+mu-) production in pp collisions at root square[s] = 1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum p(mu)T>2 GeV/c within the pseudorapidity region /eta/ < 1.0, the ratio of diffractive to total J/psi production rates is found to be R(J/psi) = [1.45 +/- 0.25]%. The ratio R(J/psi)(x) is presented as a function of x-Bjorken. By combining it with our previously measured corresponding ratio R(jj)(x) for diffractive dijet production, we extract a value of 0.59 +/- 0.15 for the gluon fraction of the diffractive structure function of the proton.

Abstract
We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W' boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected in p p macro collisions at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV by the CDF Collaboration during 1992-1995. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale Lambda, the ratio of partial cross sections sigma(W'-->enu)/sigma(W-->enu), and the mass of a W' boson with standard model couplings. We exclude Lambda<2.81 TeV and a W' boson with mass below 754 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level. Combining with our previously published limit obtained using the muon channel, we exclude a W' boson with mass below 786 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level.

Detection of sporadic cases of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in China using immunoassays based on recombinant open reading frame 2 and 3 polypeptides from HEV genotype 4. Abstract
We reported previously on the complete sequence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 4, isolated from patients with sporadic cases of acute HEV infection in China. At least eight HEV genotypes have now been described worldwide, and further isolates await classification. Current immunoassays for the detection of anti-HEV antibodies are based on polypeptides from genotypes 1 and 2 only and may be inadequate for the reliable detection of other genotypes. Because genotypes 1 and 4 predominate in China, we wished to investigate the antigenic reactivities of HEV genotype 4 proteins. Four overlapping regions of open reading frame 2 (ORF2) (FB5, amino acids [aa] 1 to 130; E4, aa 67 to 308; F2-2, aa 288 to 461; E5, aa 414 to 672) and the entire ORF3 product were expressed in Escherichia coli as fusion proteins. Enzyme immunoassays based on each of the five purified polypeptides were evaluated with sera from patients with sporadic cases of acute HEV infection. Individual immunoassays derived from HEV genotype 4 detected more cases of acute hepatitis E than a commercial assay. Some serum samples, which were positive for anti-HEV immunoglobulin G only by assays based on HEV genotype 4, were positive for HEV RNA by reverse transcription-PCR. Polypeptide FB5, from the N terminus of ORF2, had the greatest immunoreactivity with sera from patients with acute hepatitis E. These data indicate that the N terminus of ORF2 may provide epitopes which are highly reactive with acute-phase sera and that assays based on genotypes 1 and 2 alone may be inadequate for the detection of HEV infection in China, where sporadic cases of HEV infection are caused predominantly by HEV genotypes 4 and 1.

Abstract
We report on a measurement of the mean charged-particle multiplicity of jets in dijet events with dijet masses in the range 80-630 GeV/c(2), produced at the Tevatron in pp collisions with square root (s) = 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The data are fit to perturbative-QCD calculations carried out in the framework of the modified leading log approximation and the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The fit yields values for two parameters in that framework: the ratio of parton multiplicities in gluon and quark jets, r identical withN(g-jet)(partons)/N(q-jet)(partons) = 1.7+/-0.3, and the ratio of the number of charged hadrons to the number of partons in a jet, K(charged)(LPHD) identical with N(charged)(hadrons)/N(partons) = 0.57+/-0.11.

Abstract
To examine the molecular processes that lead to light-induced retinal degeneration, mutant mice deficient in arrestin and rhodopsin kinase were raised in the dark and then subjected to relatively low doses of white light. The kinetics of the subsequent induction of apoptosis, change in mRNA transcript level, and photoreceptor cell death were monitored. Analysis of transcript profiles identified clusters of genes that responded differently to illumination, including a cluster of photoreceptor-specific genes that showed marked decreases in levels long before morphological damage could be readily ascertained. The behaviors of other gene clusters demonstrate the coordinate induction of stress gene responses early in the course of irradiation. There was little, if any, change in transcript levels corresponding to genes associated with the initiation of apoptosis or antiapoptotic effects. Transcript analysis provides insight into the patterns of gene expression that are associated with the different stages of retinal degeneration in this model system.

Abstract
We present results from a measurement of double diffraction dissociation in pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The production cross section for events with a central pseudorapidity gap of width Deltaeta(0)>3 (overlapping eta = 0) is found to be 4.43+/-0.02(stat)+/-1.18(syst) mb [ 3.42+/-0.01(stat)+/-1.09(syst) mb] at square root of (s) = 1800[630] GeV. Our results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization.

Abstract
We report on a measurement of the mass dependence of the forward-backward charge asymmetry, A(FB), and production cross section d sigma/dM for e(+)e(-) pairs with mass M(ee)>40 GeV/c(2). The data sample consists of 108 pb(-1) of pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV taken by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The measured asymmetry and d sigma/dM are compared with the predictions of the standard model and a model with an extra Z' gauge boson.

Abstract
We have measured the p(T) distribution of top quarks that are pair produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV using a sample of tt decays in which we observe a single high- p(T) charged lepton, a neutrino, and four or more jets. We use a likelihood technique that corrects for the experimental bias introduced due to event reconstruction and detector resolution effects. The observed distribution is consistent with the standard model prediction. We use these data to place limits on the production of high- p(T) top quarks suggested in some models of anomalous top quark pair production.

Abstract
During visual excitation, rhodopsin undergoes photoactivation and bleaches to opsin and all-trans-retinal. To regenerate rhodopsin and maintain normal visual sensitivity, the all-trans isomer must be metabolized and reisomerized to produce the chromophore 11-cis-retinal in biochemical steps that constitute the visual cycle and involve the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE; refs. 3-8). A key step in the visual cycle is isomerization of an all-trans retinoid to 11-cis-retinol in the RPE (refs. 9-11). It could be that the retinochrome-like opsins, peropsin, or the retinal G protein-coupled receptor (RGR) opsin12-16 are isomerases in the RPE. In contrast to visual pigments, RGR is bound predominantly to endogenous all-trans-retinal, and irradiation of RGR in vitro results in stereospecific conversion of the bound all-trans isomer to 11-cis-retinal. Here we show that RGR is involved in the formation of 11-cis-retinal in mice and functions in a light-dependent pathway of the rod visual cycle. Mutations in the human gene encoding RGR are associated with retinitis pigmentosa.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks in pp-->bb(phi)-->bbb final states with 91+/-7 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data are interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop-quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for tan(beta) values in excess of 35.

Abstract
We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states chi(c1) and chi(c2) in 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/psi(gamma) is reconstructed through conversion into e+e- pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections sigma(chi(c2))/sigma(chi(c1)) = 0.96+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.11(syst) for events with pT(J/psi) > 4.0 GeV/c, /eta(J/psi)/ < 0.6, and pT(gamma) > 1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R identical withB(t-->Wb)/B(t-->Wq) from p_p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(+0.31)(-0.24)(stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element /V(tb)/ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

Abstract
The recent regulatory actions toward a longer-term (i.e., 8-hr) average ozone standard have brought forth the potential for many rural areas in the eastern United States to be in noncompliance. However, since a majority of these rural areas have generally few sources of anthropogenic emissions, the measured ozone levels primarily reflect the effects of the transport of ozone and its precursor pollutants and natural emissions. While photochemical grid models have been applied to urban areas to develop ozone mitigation measures, these efforts have been limited to high ozone episode events only and do not adequately cover rural regions. In this study, we applied a photochemical modeling system, RAMS/UAM-V, to the eastern United States from June 1-August 31, 1995. The purpose of the study is to examine the predictive ability of the modeling system at rural monitoring stations that are part of the Clean Air Status Trends Network (CASTNet) and the Gaseous Pollutant Monitoring Program (GPMP). The results show that the measured daily 1-hr ozone maxima and the seasonal average of the daily 1-hr ozone maxima are in better agreement with the predictions of the modeling system than those for the daily 8-hr ozone maxima. Also, the response of the modeling system in reproducing the measured range of ozone levels over the diurnal cycle is poor, suggesting the need for improvement in the treatment of the physical and chemical processes of the modeling system during the nighttime and morning hours if it is to be used to address the 8-hr ozone standard.

Abstract
Although clathrin assembly by adaptor proteins (APs) plays a major role in the recycling of synaptic vesicles, the molecular mechanism that allows APs to assemble clathrin is poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that AP180, like AP-2 and AP-3, binds to the N-terminal domain of clathrin. Sequence analysis reveals a motif, containing the sequence DLL, that exists in multiple copies in many clathrin APs. Progressive deletion of these motifs caused a gradual reduction in the ability of AP180 to assemble clathrin in vitro. Peptides from AP180 or AP-2 containing this motif also competitively inhibited clathrin assembly by either protein. Microinjection of these peptides into squid giant presynaptic terminals reversibly blocked synaptic transmission and inhibited synaptic vesicle endocytosis by preventing coated pit formation at the plasma membrane. These results indicate that the DLL motif confers clathrin assembly properties to AP180 and AP-2 and, perhaps, to other APs. We propose that APs promote clathrin assembly by cross-linking clathrin triskelia via multivalent interactions between repeated DLL motifs in the APs and complementary binding sites on the N-terminal domain of clathrin. These results reveal the structural basis for clathrin assembly and provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of clathrin-mediated synaptic vesicle endocytosis.

Abstract
We have measured the polarization of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The polarization of promptly produced J/psi [psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4 [5.5]<P(T)<20 GeV/c and |y|<0.6. For P(T) greater than or approximately equal 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.

Abstract
WeiniCom is a Chinese herbal compound. The purposes of this double blind study were to evaluate (1) the efficacy of WeiniCom in reducing acute opioid withdrawal symptoms and craving, and (2) the side effects of WeiniCom, in each instance by comparing WeiniCom with buprenorphine, an established opioid detoxification treatment agent. Forty-two heroin addicts meeting the criteria of dependence in DSM-IV were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: a WeiniCom group (21 cases), and a buprenorphine group (21 cases). The Withdrawal Symptom Rating Scale and the Craving Rating Scale were employed to assess acute withdrawal symptoms and craving for heroin, and the Side Effects Rating Scale was used to measure side effects in the 14-treatment period. Both the WeiniCom and buprenorphine treatments are well-tolerated and very safe. Overall, the relief from opioid withdrawal symptoms and craving was better in the WeiniCom group than in the buprenorphine group. The rate of reduction in the severity of the withdrawal symptoms was faster in the WeiniCom group than in the buprenorphine group. By day nine to 10, the WeiniCom group showed very few withdrawal symptoms. In contrast, from day five on, the buprenorphine group continued to report relatively high scores for withdrawal symptoms and craving. WeiniCom demonstrated positive effects quickly, and required a shorter treatment period to achieve a desired degree of elimination of acute withdrawal symptoms and craving.

Abstract
We have searched for direct pair production of scalar top and scalar bottom quarks in 88 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV with the CDF detector. We looked for events with a pair of heavy flavor jets and missing energy, consistent with scalar top (bottom) quark decays to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutralino. The numbers of events that pass our selections show no significant deviation from standard model expectations. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order scalar quark production cross sections to exclude regions in scalar quark-neutralino mass parameter space.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 107 pb-1 data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We consider the decay channel W'-->&munumu and search for anomalous production of high transverse mass munumu lepton pairs. We observe no excess of events above background and set limits on the rate of W' boson production and decay relative to standard model W boson production and decay using a fit of the transverse mass distribution observed. If we assume standard model strength couplings of the W' boson to quark and lepton pairs, we exclude a W' boson with invariant mass less than 660 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Gui Xin Tong(GXT) on sorbitol and nerve conduction velocity in diabetic rats. METHOD The model rats suffering from diabetes were induced by STZ, and blood sugar levels above 16 mmol/L were chosen for observation. The rats were divided into GXT group, AG group and control group. The nerve conduction velocity, aldose reductase activity and sorbitol in STZ induced diabetic rats were investigated. RESULT Compared with the control group GXT could increase the sciatic nerve conduction velocity significantly (P < 0.05), decrease the RBC and sciatic nerve, aldose reductase activity, and RBC-sorbitol content. CONCLUSION GXT has the effect of improving nerve conduction velocity significantly and reducing aldose reductase activity and sorbitol
