Abstract
Objective: To invesigate the epidemic status of the metabolic syndrome (MS) among mainland Chinese adolescents aged 10-17 in 2010-2012. Methods: Data were collected from Chinese Nutrition and Health Surveillance in 2010-2012. Multi-stage stratified proportion to the population cluster random sampling method was conducted to determine 16 872 adolescents in 150 counties from 31 provinces in mainland China. The epidemic status of metabolic syndrome was analyzed by China criterion (defined by Chinese Pediatric Society, Chinese Medical Association) and Cook criterion, respectively. The prevalence of MS and 95%CI were calculated through weighted complex sampling processing by population data released by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2009. Results: Based on China criterion, the weighted prevalence of MS was 2.4% (95% CI: 2.1%-2.6%) among Chinese adolescents aged 10-17. Prevalence in urban was higher than in rural (2.8%, 95%CI: 2.4%-3.2% and 1.9%, 95%CI:1.6%-2.3%, respectively). Prevalence in boys and girls were 2.7% (95% CI: 2.3%-3.0%), and 2.0% (95% CI: 1.7%-2.4%), respectively. Based on Cook criterion, the weighted prevalence was 4.3% (95% CI: 4.0%-4.7%) . The highest weighted prevalence of the components of the metabolic syndrome was low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (26.8%, 95% CI: 26.0%-27.5%), followed by high fasting glucose (11.5%, 95% CI: 11.0%-12.0%), abdominal obesity (11.1%, 95%CI: 10.6%-11.7%) , hypertriglyceridemia (8.8%, 95%CI: 8.4%-9.3%) , and high blood pressure (6.4%, 95% CI: 6.0%-6.8%). Conclusion: Among the five indicators of metabolic syndrome, the prevalence of central obesity and hypertriglyceridemia were relative high in Chinese adolescents aged 10-17 years, though the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was not high.

Abstract
DiGeorge syndrome is the most common chromosome microdeletion disease. The classical complications include congenital heart disease, hypothyroidism, immunodeficiency, facial abnormalities, and hypocalcemia. According to whether there is an absence or hypoplasia of the thymus, DiGeorge syndrome can be divided into two types, complete DiGeorge syndrome and partial DiGeorge syndrome. The patient was a female born with congenital heart disease, facial abnormalities and cleft palate. When the patient went to school, she had learning difficulty and had problems in communication and personal social behavior. Breath-holding occurred when she was 6 years old. She got infections about 2-3 times a year, which was easy to be cured each time. Chromosome microdeletion test of peripheral blood showed the classical 22q11.2 microdeletion, and no evidence showed that she has thymus absence, thus her disease was diagnosed as partial DiGeorge syndrome. When the patient was 6 years old, the blood routine test showed slight thrombocytopenia, and reexaminations after that indicated the similar result. When 9 years old, she was found with anemia and severe thrombocytopenia. At the age of 10, the patient was admitted to our hospital, complaining of petechia in the body and mucous of mouth. According to the various examinations results, doctors eventually considered the situation as an autoimmune disorder phenomenon. After being treated by pulse-dose methylprednisolone for three days, the bleeding ceased. Then the patient orally took prednisone acetate and pulse-dose cyclophosphamide, however the thrombocyte and hemoglobin levels had not been back to a normal range. But when the dose of prednisone acetate was reduced, the blood platelet count declined again while the hemoglobin kept normal. The long-term follow-up of this case lasted for more than 20 years. Until now, the patient is taking orally prednisone acetate as a maintainance treatment, and the anemia has been improved since, but thrombocytopenia still exists. The mechanism of DiGeorge syndrome in combination with immunodeficiency is still unclear. The most likely reason is that this phenomenon has some relationship with the dysfunction of the thymus and finally had an effect on the function of T cells. The clinical manifestation is always stubborn and need treatment and follow-up visit for a long time.

Abstract
Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) is a member of the mammalian NAD+‑dependent deacetylase sirtuin family that acts to maintain genomic stability and to repress genes. SIRT6 has recently been reported to be a tumor suppressor that controls cancer metabolism, although this effect of SIRT6 is still in dispute. Moreover, the role of SIRT6 in glioma is largely unknown. In the present study, we found that overexpression of SIRT6 using an adenovirus inhibited glioma cell growth and induced marked cell injury in two glioma cell lines (U87‑MG and T98G). Fluorescent terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase (TdT)‑mediated biotin‑16‑dUTP nick‑end labelling (TUNEL) assay showed that SIRT6 overexpression induced obvious apoptosis in the T98G glioma cells. Immunoblotting and immunofluorescent staining demonstrated that SIRT6 overexpression promoted the mitochondrial-to‑nuclear translocation of apoptosis‑inducing factor (AIF), a potent apoptosis inducer. Moreover, we found that SIRT6 overexpression largely reduced oxidative stress and suppressed the activation of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in glioma cells. Finally, we showed that SIRT6 mRNA and protein levels in human glioblastoma multiforme tissues were significantly lower than the levels in peritumor tissues. In summary, our data suggest that SIRT6 suppresses glioma cell growth via induction of apoptosis, inhibition of oxidative stress and inhibition of the activation of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. These results indicate that SIRT6 may be a promising therapeutic target for glioma treatment.

Abstract
β-amyloid peptides (Aβs) can exert neurotoxic effects through induction of oxidative damage, whereas lipoic acid (LA), a powerful antioxidant, can alleviate oxidative damage. In this study, we explored the effect and mechanism of action of LA on beta-amyloid-intoxicated C6 glioma cells. Cells were randomly divided into three groups: control (vehicle), Aβ, and LA + Aβ. The LA + Aβ group was treated with LA for 2 h, then both the Aβ-only and the LA + Aβ groups were incubated with 25 μM Aβ for 24 h. Cell viability was measured by the MTT method. Mitochondrial reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the GSH to GSSG ratio calculated. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses were used to detect MnSOD mRNA and protein, respectively. Aβ significantly inhibited C6 cell proliferation compared with the control group (P < 0.05). LA markedly increased cell viability compared with the Aβ group (P < 0.05). The increased GSSH and decreased GSH mitochondrial accumulation induced by Aβ was profoundly reversed by treatment with LA (P < 0.05). Aβ significantly reduced MnSOD expression compared to controls (P < 0.05), whereas LA pretreatment increased MnSOD expression compared with the Aβ-only group (P < 0.05); MnSOD protein levels showed similar patterns. These results suggest that LA might protect Aβ-intoxicated C6 glioma cells by alleviating oxidative damage, providing a new treatment strategy for neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is one of the tumors with the highest mortality, poorly responding to available chemotherapeutic agents. The objective of this study was to study the anticancer effects of all-trans retinoid acid, a functional form of vitamin A, on pancreatic cancer cells. Human pancreatic cancer MiaPaCa-2 cells were treated with 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 microM ATRA for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 d, respectively. Cell growth was determined by MTT viability assay. The cell cycle distribution and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were analyzed by flow cytometry and chemical analyzer, respectively. The results show that ATRA significantly inhibited the growth of MiaPaCa-2 cells at 40 and 50 microM. ATRA arrested pancreatic cancer cells at G0/G1 phase. The sub-G1 peak and DNA fragmentation were observed. There were time and dose dependent increases in alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), an indicator of cell differentiation, upon treatment with ATRA when compared to controls. In conclusion, ATRA has an inhibitory effect on the cell growth of MiaPaCa-2, and its tumor suppressive effect is by means of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction.

Abstract
Compared to MICs (more than 800 microg/ml) of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) against Escherchia coli, MICs of EGCg against methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA) were 100 microg/ml or less. Furthermore, less than 25 microg EGCg per ml obviously reversed the high level resistance of MRSA to all types of tested beta-lactams, including benzylpenicillin, oxacillin, methicillin, ampicillin, and cephalexin. EGCg also induced a supersusceptibility to beta-lactams in MSSA which does not express mecA, encoding penicillin-binding protein 2' (PBP2'). The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices of the tested beta-lactams against 25 isolates of MRSA were from 0.126 to 0.625 in combination with 6.25, 12.5 or 25 microg of EGCg per ml. However, no synergism was observed between EGCg and ampicillin against E. coli. EGCg largely reduced the tolerance of MRSA and MSSA to high ionic strength and low osmotic pressure in their external atmosphere, indicating damage of the cell wall. Unlike dextran and lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan from S. aureus blocked both the antibacterial activity of EGCg and the synergism between EGCg and oxacillin, suggesting a direct binding of EGCg with peptidoglycan on the cell wall. EGCg showed a synergistic effect with DL-cycloserine (an inhibitor of cell wall synthesis unrelated to PBP2') but additive or indifferent effect with inhibitors of protein and nuclear acid synthesis. EGCg did not suppress either PBP2' mRNA expression or PBP2' production, as confirmed by reverse transcription-PCR and a semiquantitative PBP2' latex agglutination assay, indicating an irrelevance between the synergy and PBP2' production. In summary, both EGCg and beta-lactams directly or indirectly attack the same site, peptidoglycan on the cell wall. EGCg synergizes the activity of beta-lactams against MRSA owing to interference with the integrity of the cell wall through direct binding to peptidoglycan.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) in tea catechins blocked or significantly diminished the transfer of conjugative R plasmid between Escherichia coli C600 with plasmid R-222 (donor) and E. coli K-12 RC85 (recipient) in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition rates of R plasmid transfer by EGCg were 42%-67% at 50-200 microg/ml, and up to 99% at 800 microg/ml. Nevertheless, EGCg, even at the concentration of 1600 microg/ml, was not sufficient to kill E. coli cells in 1 h, as confirmed by determining viable cells after incubation with various concentrations of EGCg. The result indicates that the bactericidal activity of EGCg against the two strains was not the main factor responsible for the inhibition of R plasmid transfer. This observation suggests the possibility that tea consumption may be effective in preventing R plasmid transfer in enteric bacteria.

Abstract
Compared with ampicillin, oxacillin, cefmetazole and imipenem, the combination of ampicillin and sulbactam at a constant ratio of 2:1 showed the greatest effect against 28 clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but MICs of ampicillin/sulbactam were still above the resistance breakpoint. When ampicillin/sulbactam was further combined with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg, a main constituent of tea catechins), the MIC90 of ampicillin/ sulbactam was reduced to 4 mg/L, the susceptibility breakpoint. The fractional inhibitory concentration indices were between 0.19 and 0.56 in combination with 6.25 and 25 mg/L EGCg, respectively, indicating that ampicillin/sulbactam and EGCg combination may be effective against MRSA infections.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of BMI (Body Mass Index) and WHR (Waist Hip Ratio) on average blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension in middle-aged and elderly population in rural China. A total of 12955 subjects including 6276 males and 6688 females over 40 years of age were surveyed. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and blood pressure were measured. The association of BMI and WHR on average blood pressure levels and prevalence of hypertension were analyzed by dividing BMI and WHR into tertiles. The average blood pressure levels and the prevalence of hypertension in males and females increased significantly with the increase of BMI or WHR (P < 0.01), as well as with the increase of both of them (P < 0.01). The average blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension stopped increasing when WHR was > or = 0.76, suggesting that WHR > or = 0.80 could be used as a cut-off value for the prediction of hypertension risk for both males and females. Therefore hypertension could be effectively prevented and controlled by controlling BMI and WHR.

Abstract
The Gamma Knife radiosurgical treatment of two patients suffering from carcinomas of the hard palate is reported. A 67-year-old woman was treated with partial resection of an adenocarcinoma of the hard palate two years previously. Computerized tomographic imaging showed the tumor had grown (T4N1M0). The second patient, a 58-year-old woman, had a cauliflower-like tumor of the hard palate (T2N0M0). Pathological diagnosis obtained by needle biopsy was squamous cell carcinoma. These two patients underwent radiosurgical treatment with the Gamma Knife. A surface dose of 20 Gy was administered at the 35% isodose curve. These two patients were followed up for 18 and 15 months, respectively. Encouraging results were obtained. Further research is needed in order to validate this new treatment of carcinomas of the hard palate.

Abstract
The concentration (c)-time (t) curves of piroxicam showed double peaks following iv 10 mg dose to 4 rabbits. A new mathematical model of enterohepatic circulation was proposed to explain this double-peak phenomenon and showed good agreement with data. This model provides not only the common pharmacokinetic parameters: T1/2 = 1.12 +/- 0.32 h, V1 = 0.64 +/- 0.12 L, AUC = 34.7 +/- 7.8 micrograms.h-1.ml-1, but also the parameters of enterohepatic circulation of piroxicam: the cycling amount of drug Db = 3.9 +/- 1.4 mg, reabsorption fraction Fb = 0.50 +/- 0.04, reabsorption rate constant Ka = 2.55 +/- 0.50 h-1. It is indicated in this study that enterohepatic circulation results in a 20% average increase of the effective amount of piroxicam.

Abstract
Lesion of the preoptic area (POA) or medial arcuate nucleus (M-HARN) abolished acupuncture analgesia (AA). Potentials in the median eminence (ME) evoked by stimulation of the acupuncture point (AP) were not affected by lesion of either the POA or M-HARN alone, but were abolished by concurrent lesion of both. No analgesia was produced by stimulation of the POA. Analgesia produced by stimulation of the M-HARN was abolished by lesion of the POA, and the abolished analgesia was restored by concurrent stimulation of the POA and M-HARN, hence POA and M-HARN outputs might converge in the ME to produce AA. Similar convergence from the anterior arcuate nucleus (A-HARN) and POA to the ME was observed in analgesia (NAA) produced by stimulation of a nonacupuncture point (NAP). Two pathways diverged from the lateral hypothalamus in the AA afferent pathway and two from the lateral periaqueductal central gray (L-PAG) in the NAA afferent pathway. POA potentials evoked by stimulation of the AP were reversed by naloxone, and those evoked by stimulation of the AP were reversed by dexamethasone. ACTH sensitive sites were found in both the L-PAG and the anterior hypothalamus.
