Abstract
BACKGROUND Lurasidone, an azapirone derivative, is a novel second generation antipsychotic with potent binding affinity for dopamine D2, serotonin 5-HT2A, 5-HT7, 5-HT1A, and noradrenaline alpha2C receptors. This updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examined the short-term efficacy and tolerability of lurasidone in the treatment of acute schizophrenia. METHODS Double-blinded RCTs reporting on the short-term effects of lurasidone were included. Standardized mean difference (SMD) with their 95% confidence interval (CI), and number needed to harm (NNH) were computed. RESULTS The meta-analysis had 8 RCTs with 16 active arms that included 2373 patients with acute schizophrenia who were randomized to either lurasidone (20-160 mg/day; n = 1570) or placebo (n = 803) groups. Lurasidone was superior to placebo with regard to change in total psychopathology [SMD: -0.34, (95%CI: -0.48, -0.20), P<0.00001], positive symptoms [SMD: -0.47, (95%CI: -0.57, -0.36), P<0.00001], negative symptoms [SMD:-0.34, (95%CI: -0.45, -0.22), P<0.00001], and general psychopathology [SMD: -0.36, (95%CI: -0.48, -0.24), P<0.00001]. Results were consistent for total psychopathology in 11 out of the 13 subgroups. Lurasidone resulted in higher weight gain [SMD: 0.15, (95% CI: 0.06, 0.24), P = 0.001] and BMI [SMD: 0.17, (95%CI: 0.07, 0.28), P = 0.002] than placebo, but the differences were not clinically significant. Lurasidone group had less frequent inefficacy (NNH = 14) and discontinuation due to any reason (NNH = 17), but was associated with more frequent vomiting, akathisia, dystonia, parkinsonism, somnolence, dizziness, sedation, nausea, and weight gain of ≥7% of the initial weight (NNH = 11-50). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis of 8 short-term studies supported the efficacy and safety of lurasidone in the acute phase of schizophrenia, particularly at the higher dose range of 80 mg/day.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Raloxifene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator, has been used in treating postmenopausal women with schizophrenia with inconsistent results. This meta-analysis of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) examined its efficacy and safety for postmenopausal women with schizophrenia. METHOD Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and risk ratio (RR) together with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the random effects model. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 5 RCTs (n = 240) comparing raloxifene (n = 125, 60 or 120 mg/day) with placebo (n = 115). Adjunctive raloxifene outperformed placebo with regard to the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total psychopathology [n = 240, SMD:-0.64 (95%CI:-0.90, -0.37), P < 0.00001; I2 = 0%], positive symptoms [n = 240, SMD:-0.49 (95%CI:-0.81, -0.16), P = 0.003; I2 = 29%], negative symptoms [n = 240, SMD:-0.43 (95%CI:-0.68, -0.17), P = 0.001; I2 = 0%], and general psychopathology scores [n = 240, SMD:-0.66 (95%CI:-0.92, -0.39), P < 0.00001; I2 = 0%]. Both groups had similar rates of adverse events and discontinuation (n = 159, RR: 1.32 (95%CI: 0.65, 2.70), P = 0.44, I2 = 0%). CONCLUSION Adjunctive raloxifene appears to be effective and safe in improving psychotic symptoms for postmenopausal women with schizophrenia. Review registration: CRD 42017059946.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the current perception of disease among asthmatic patients in Chinese urban areas, and to address its association with asthma control. Methods: This was a nationwide, multi-center, cross-sectional study covering 30 third-level, grade A hospitals in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions (not including Tibet) across Chinese mainland. The survey was carried out from October 2015 to May 2016. Asthmatic outpatients were selected to receive face-to-face questionnaire survey on asthma control including Asthma Control Test (ACT) score, classification of asthma control level[according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) 2015 classification system, as assessed by the physician completing the survey], perception of asthma (including question 1: nature of asthma as a disease; question 2: selection of first-line therapeutic agents to be regularly used daily for asthma; question 3: appropriate timing of the use of short-acting aerosols of β(2) receptor agonists; and question 4: therapeutic goals for asthma). Results: A total of 3 875 asthmatic outpatients were included; among them, 69.0% (2 660/3 857) were aware that asthma is "an airway inflammatory disorder resulting from the combined effects of heredity and environment" ; 60.2% (2 321/3 857) considered "inhaled glucocorticoids or their compound preparations" to be the first-line therapeutic agents to be regularly used daily for patients with persistent chronic asthma; 85.7% (3 277/3 823) considered it appropriate to use short-acting aerosols of β(2) receptor agonists "as needed in the event of disease aggravation or acute exacerbation" ; and 75.4% (2 761/3 661) were aware that asthma "can be adequately or completely controlled in the long term" . The ACT score[20 (16, 23) vs 19 (16, 22) points; Z=-3.928, P<0.001]and asthma control rate (29.92% vs 25.31%; χ(2)=8.616, P=0.003) were significantly higher, and the rate of uncontrolled asthma (19.92% vs 23.48%; χ(2)=6.267, P=0.012) was significantly lower among the 2 660 (69.0%) patients correctly answering question 1 than among the 1 197 (31.0%) patients giving incorrect answer. The ACT score[21 (17, 23) vs 19 (15, 22) points; Z=-9.190, P<0.001] and asthma control rate (32.66% vs 22.20%; χ(2)=49.614, P<0.001) were significantly higher, and the rate of uncontrolled asthma (18.40% vs 25.00%; χ(2)=24.267, P<0.001) was significantly lower among the 2 321 (60.2%) patient correctly answering question 2 than among the 1 536 (39.8%) patients giving incorrect answer. Conclusions: Compared to previous surveys, there has been improved perception of disease among asthmatic patients in Chinese urban areas. Correct perception of disease is favorable for improving asthma control level.

Abstract
Objective:To evaluate the effect of systemic and intratympanic dexamethasone combination therapy on sudden deafness.Method:A total of 98 patients randomly divided into three groups: an intravenous corticosteroid (systemic corticosteroid monotherapy group); an intratympanic corticosteroid (IT monotherapy group); and a combination therapy group (IT plus systemic combination group). All patients were treated additionally with ginkgo-damole and mecobalamine and proton pomp inhibitor. An audiometry was performed before and after the therapies in all patients. Result:Of the total of 98 patients, 39 were receiving systemic corticosteroids, 28 received intratympanic(IT) corticosteroids, and 31 were receiving a combination of the two. A total of 65 patients (66.3%) responded positively to corticosteroid therapy. No significant differences were observed between the three groups (systemic group, IT and combination therapy group) in their overall response to treatment (P=0.61). Patients who suffered from concomitant tinnitus and dizziness responded less positively to the treatment (P=0.00). Positive family history of SSNHL seems to be negative prognostic factors in the response to treatment (P=0.02).The response to treatment was not related to the initial severity of hearing loss (P=0.68) and pattern (P=0.28). Conclusion:This study did not find any difference in the rate of hearing improvement between systemic, intratympanic, and combined corticosteroid therapy for sudden hearing loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Findings regarding the benefits of fruit and vegetables (FV) on weight control are inconsistent and little is known among Chinese populations. Therefore, we examined the relationship between change in FV consumption, weight, and change in body mass index (BMI) among Chinese adults, participants of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). STUDY DESIGN A prospective cohort study. METHODS Two waves of CHNS conducted in 2006 and 2011 were used. Continuous FV consumption increase was considered as the exposure and changes in weight and BMI as outcomes. Change in FV consumption was categorized into quintiles. Analysis of covariance and multiple linear regression models, after controlling for potential confounders such as energy intake, physical activity, and smoking, were used to describe the relationship between change in FV consumption and change in weight and BMI. RESULTS A total of 4357 participants aged 18-65 years were included in this study. The respective weight and BMI gains in male individuals were 1.81 kg and 0.73 kg/m2 in the fifth quintile of FV change relative to individuals in the first quintile (3.67 kg for weight gain and 1.48 kg/m2 for BMI gain). An increase in FV consumption by 100 g was associated with a 211 g weight loss (B = -2.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], -3.34, -0.89, P < 0.001) and a decrease in BMI by 0.94 kg/m2 (B = -0.94; 95% CI, -1.36, -0.46, P < 0.001) in men; and a 140 g weight loss (B = -0.14; 95% CI, -0.97, 0.69, P = 0.74) and a decrease in BMI by 0.29 kg/m2 BMI (B = -0.29; 95% CI, -0.63, 0.06, P = 0.11) in women. CONCLUSIONS Increase in FV consumption was associated with statistically significant weight loss and decrease in BMI among Chinese men, and, although suggested, weight loss among women was not significant. Considering the protective effect of FV on human health, increasing FV consumption in the Chinese population is recommended.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of Penehyclidine Hydrochloride Injection on pulmonary ischemia-reperfusion in aortic dissection surgery. Methods: This study was a prospective randomized controlled trial. Between September 2015 and October 2017 in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, 60 patients with aortic dissection underwent total arch replacement surgery were randomly divided into penehyclidine hydrochloride group (group A 30 cases) and control group (group B 30 cases). Patients in group A were infused with penehyclidine hydrochloride 0.05 mg/kg after entering the operating room. Patients in group B were infused with the same dose of 0.9% normal saline. Serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 (IL-1) and oxygenation index (OI) before anesthesia (T1), before cardiopulmonary bypass (T2), 1 h after cardiopulmonary bypass (T3), the end of cardiopulmonary bypass (T4), 4 h after surgery (T5) and 24 h after surgery (T6) were measured. The time of postoperative ventilator support and ICU staywas recorded. Results: At the time of T4, T5 and T6, the serum levels of TNF-α[(0.10±0.08), (0.13±0.02), (0.23±0.17) mg/L], IL-6[(0.23±0.08), (0.34±0.07), (0.54±0.17) mg/L]and IL-1[(0.62±0.14), (1.02±0.27), (1.44±0.40) mg/L]in group A were significantly lower than those in group B[(0.30±0.09), (0.51±0.19), (0.86±0.02) mg/L; (0.73±0.19), (1.33±0.13), (1.98±0.13) mg/L; (0.93±0.19), (1.43±0.66), (2.04±0.45) mg/L]. The OI was higher in group A[(446.7±267.0), (386.7±169.5), (391.7±227.9) mmHg]than that of group B[(341.2±145.2), (299.5±98.7), (275.0±127.3) mmHg](P<0.05). The time of ventilator support and ICU stay after operation was (3.6 ±1.2)d, (8.4 ± 2.0) d in group A, which was shorter than that in group B[(4.3 ± 1.8), (10.0 ± 2.2) d], and there were statistical differences between the two groups (all P<0.05). Conclusions: In total arch replacement, intravenous penehyclidine hydrochloride injection may decrease the release of serum TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1, improve oxygenation index, reduce lung ischemia-reperfusion injury, shorten the time of ventilator support and ICU stay after operation, and thus improve the prognosis of patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Weight gain is a common antipsychotic (AP)-related adverse drug reaction (ADR) that can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and premature mortality. This meta-analysis examined the efficacy and tolerability of combining metformin and lifestyle intervention for AP-related weight gain in schizophrenia. METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with meta-analyzable data were searched and retrieved by 2 independent investigators. RevMan software (version 5.3) was used to synthesize data, and to calculate the standardized or weighted mean differences and risk ratio with their 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Six RCTs (n=732) were included and meta-analyzed. The metformin and lifestyle combination (MLC) group had significant reduction in weight and body mass index compared with the metformin group, lifestyle group, and placebo group. There was less frequent weight gain of≥7% in the MLC group over placebo. No other group differences in ADRs, total psychopathology, and all-cause discontinuation were found. In terms of study quality, 5 RCTs were open-labelled, 1 RCT had low risk allocation concealment, and 3 RCTs specifically described randomization methods. CONCLUSION Combining metformin and lifestyle intervention shows significant effect in reducing AP-related weight gain. Higher quality and larger RCTs are needed to confirm these findings.Review registration: CRD42017059198.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia is a major health concern. The efficacy and safety of adjunctive rosuvastatin in treating dyslipidemia were controversial. Aims To assess the efficacy and safety of adjunctive rosuvastatin for dyslipidemia in patients with schizophrenia. Methods We systematically searched for relevant controlled clinical trials from the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, China Knowledge Network, WanFang Database and Chinese Biomedical Database up to September 28, 2017. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR) along with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. The GRADE (Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) system recommendation grading method was used as the reference standard. Results Four studies (n=274) comparing rosuvastatin (n=138) and control (n=136) groups were identified and analyzed. Adjunctive rosuvastatin showed greater efficacy than control group in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) [4 trials, n=272, SMD: -1.31 (95%CI: -1.93, -0.70), I2=81%], total cholesterol (2 trials, n=164, SMD: -2.00 (95%CI: -2.79, -1.21); I2=76%) and triglycerides (2 trials, n=164, SMD: -1.05 (95%CI: -1.38, -0.72); I2=0%), but not in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (2 trials, n=164, SMD: 0.14 (95%CI: -0.16, 0.45); I2=0%). After removing one study without randomization for LDL-C, significance remained [3 trials, n=172, SMD:-1.07 (95%CI: -1.60, -0.53); I2=63%]. No significant group differences regarding body weight (3 trials, n=208, SMD: -0.40 (95%CI:-1.29, 0.49); I2=89%), body mass index (2 trials, n=164, SMD: -0.34 (95%CI: -1.23, 0.56); I2=87%), waist circumference (3 trials, n=208, SMD): -0.43 (95%CI: -1.31, 0.46); I2=89%), and fasting glucose (4 trials, n=272, SMD: -0.25 (95%CI: -0.65, 0.15); I2=62%) were observed. The adverse reactions and any cause discontinuation rate were similar between the groups. According to the GRADE approach, the evidence levels of main outcomes were rated as “very low” (35.3%) to “low” (64.7%). Of them, the primary outcome (LDL-C) was rated as “very low “. Conclusions The data available on the effectiveness and safety of adjunctive rosuvastatin in treating dyslipidemia for patients with schizophrenia is insufficient to come to a definitive interpretation about its efficacy and safety. Further high quality RCTs with extended treatment duration are warranted to confirm the findings. Review registration PROSPERO: CRD42017078230

Abstract
Azapirones, which are serotonin1A (5-HT1A) receptor partial agonists, have been used as an adjunctive treatment for schizophrenia with mixed results. This is a meta-analysis of the efficacy and tolerability of azapirones for schizophrenia based on randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (RCTs). English and Chinese databases were systematically and independently searched by two investigators. Data were extracted and analyzed using the RevMan software (version 5.3). Seven RCTs (n = 368) of azapirones (buspirone in 6 RCTs and tandospirone in 1 RCT) were identified and analyzed. Only adjunctive buspirone outperformed placebo regarding total psychopathology [standardized mean difference: -1.03 (95% confidence interval (CI): -1.91, -0.15), P = 0.02; I2 = 92%], but the significance disappeared in sensitivity analysis after removing two outlying studies, and in 10 of the 12 subgroup analyses. In 5 RCTs examining neurocognitive function of azapirones, only 2 RCTs found the superiority of buspirone in improving attention/speeded motor performance, verbal and performance intelligence. Adjunctive buspirone outperformed placebo regarding extrapyramidal symptoms [SMD:-0.51, (95%CI: -0.99, -0.02), P = 0.04; I2 = 0%]. Similar rates of discontinuation [risk ratio:1.06 (95%CI:0.54, 2.07), P = 0.86, I2 = 0%] and adverse drug reactions were found between both groups. Adjunctive buspirone and tandospirone failed to show efficacy for psychotic symptoms, but adjunctive buspirone may be associated with improvement in extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. Due to the preliminary nature of this meta-analysis, larger sample size and higher quality RCTs are needed to confirm these finding.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Neuroinflammation has been implicated in the neurobiological pathways of schizophrenia. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive celecoxib as a noncompetitive anti-inflammation drug in treating schizophrenia. Data were searched, extracted, checked and entered into the RevMan (version 5.3) software by two independent investigators. Standardized/weighted mean differences (SMDs/WMDs), risk ratio (RR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, as appropriate. Included were 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 626 patients with schizophrenia including 316 (50.5%) treated on celecoxib (400 mg/day) and 310 (49.5%) on placebo over 8.3 ± 2.3 weeks of treatment. Adjunctive celecoxib outperformed placebo with respect to total psychopathology [3 RCTs, n = 180; SMD: -0.47; 95%CI: -0.81, -0.14; P = 0.005; I2 = 18%; 'moderate quality'], symptoms positive [3 RCTs, n = 180; SMD: -0.50; 95%CI: -0.79, -0.20; P = 0.001; I2 = 0%; 'moderate quality'], negative symptoms [3 RCTs, n = 180; SMD: -0.32; 95%CI: -0.66, 0.02; P = 0.06; I2 = 22%; 'moderate quality'], and general psychopathology scores [3 RCTs, n = 180; SMD: -0.35; 95%CI: -0.65, -0.06; P = 0.02; I2 = 0%; 'moderate quality'] in first-episode, but not chronic patients. Additionally, superiority of celecoxib for the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total scores was moderated by higher PANSS positive scores and lower PANSS negative scores at baseline. All-cause discontinuation [RR: 1.02; (95%CI: 0.56, 1.86); P = 0.94; I2 = 0%] and adverse drug reactions were similar between the two groups. Adjunctive celecoxib appears to be an efficacious and safe treatment in improving psychotic symptoms, particularly in first-episode schizophrenia. Abstract
This study was a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of
ranitidine as an adjunct for antipsychotic-induced weight gain in patients with
schizophrenia. RCTs reporting weight gain or metabolic side effects in patients
with schizophrenia were included. Case reports/series, non-randomized or
observational studies, reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded. The primary
outcome measures were body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) and body weight
(kg). Four RCTs with five study arms were identified and analyzed. Compared with
the control group, adjunctive ranitidine was associated with marginally
significant reductions in BMI and body weight. After removing an outlier study
for BMI, the effect of ranitidine remained significant. Adjunctive ranitidine
outperformed the placebo in the negative symptom score of the Positive and
Negative Syndrome Scale. Although ranitidine was associated with less frequent
drowsiness, other adverse events were similar between the two groups. Adjunctive
ranitidine appears to be an effective and safe option for reducing
antipsychotic-induced weight gain and improving negative symptoms in patients
with schizophrenia. Larger RCTs are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction The purpose of this study is to systematically review the efficacy and safety of adjunctive erythropoietin (EPO) in treating cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Methods Two evaluators independently and systematically searched and selected studies, extracted data, and conducted quality assessment.
Results Four RCTs with 144 patients (71 in the EPO group and 73 in the placebo group) met the study entry criteria. Adjunctive EPO could improve schizophrenia-related cognitive performance. In patients with bipolar disorder, EPO could also enhance sustained attention, recognition of happy faces, and speed of complex information processing across learning, attention, and executive function when compared with placebo. In addition, EPO could enhance verbal recall, recognition, and memory in patients with major depression.
Discussion This preliminary study found that adjunctive EPO appears to be effective in treating cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression without major adverse effects observed. Further higher quality RCTs with larger samples are needed to confirm the findings.

Abstract
Background Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is characterized by abnormal and involuntary movements. Importantly, TD could cause considerable personal suffering and social and physical disabilities. Aims This meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) systematically assessed the therapeutic effect and tolerability of melatonin for TD in schizophrenia. Methods A computerized and systematical search of both Chinese (Wanfang Data, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), SINOMED) and English (PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Cochrane Library databases) databases, from their inception until June 8, 2017, was conducted by two independent authors. The severity of TD symptoms were the primary outcome measure and analyzed using a random effects model by the Review Manager (RevMan) Version 5.3. Quality evaluation of included RCTs was conducted using the Cochrane risk of bias and Jadad scale. The GRADE (Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) system recommendation grading method was used to assess the overall quality level of meta-analytic outcomes. Results Four RCTs (n=130) were identified and analyzed. Three RCTs used double blind and 1 RCT used masked assessors using the Cochrane risk of bias, and 3 RCTs were rated as high quality based on Jadad scale. Compared with the control group, adjunctive melatonin was superior in reducing the severity of TD as measured by the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) (4 RCTs, n=130, weighted mean difference (WMD): -1.52 (95% confidence intervals (CI): -3.24, 0.20), p=0.08; I2=0%) although the improvement did not reach a significant level. The overall evidence quality of the improvement of TD symptoms, according to GRADE approach, was rated as “Low”. The data on the ADRs and cognitive effect were limited. Conclusions This meta-analysis shows that melatonin has potential for improving TD symptoms in schizophrenia. Future higher quality and larger RCTs are warranted to confirm the findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the association between obesity phenotype and the risk of hypertension among Chinese adults. STUDY DESIGN A prospective cohort study. METHODS Two waves of data were collected in 2009 and 2011 by the China Health Nutrition Survey. According to International Diabetes Federation and Chinese obesity criteria, participants were divided into four groups: metabolically healthy non-overweight/obesity (MHNO), metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO), metabolically abnormal non-overweight/obesity (MANO), and metabolically abnormal overweight/obesity (MAO). Logistic regression model was performed to estimate the risk of hypertension with obesity phenotype. RESULTS Among a total of 4604 adults aged 18-65 years at baseline, 467 developed hypertension during the 2-year follow-up period. After adjusting for several potential confounders, significantly increased risks for hypertension were found for participants in MHO (odd ratio [OR]: 1.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.39-2.27), MANO (OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.02-2.86), and MAO (OR: 3.35, 95% CI: 2.54-4.42) group compared with the MHNO group. CONCLUSION Metabolically abnormal individuals, regardless of their body weight status, showed significantly higher risks for hypertension compared with healthy non-overweight/obese group. Furthermore, MHO individuals had significantly increased risk of incident hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To meta-analyze randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the efficacy and safety of adjunctive antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to augment clozapine therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. DATA SOURCES The search included databases in English (PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register) and in Chinese (China Journal Net [CJN], WanFang, and China Biology Medicine [CBM]) and references from retrieved articles. The databases were searched using dates inclusive from their onset until January 1, 2016, for terms reflecting (a) schizophrenia, (b) clozapine, and (c) adjunctive drugs. STUDY SELECTION From 1,969 potentially relevant articles, 21 articles describing 22 RCTs were selected. DATA EXTRACTION Two independent investigators extracted data for a random-effects meta-analysis and assessed the quality of the studies using risk of bias and the Jadad scale. Standard mean difference, risk ratio (RR) ± 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and the number needed to harm (NNH) were used. RESULTS A total of 22 RCTs (N = 1,227) with 4 AEDs (topiramate [5 RCTs, n = 270], lamotrigine [8 RCTs, n = 299], sodium valproate [6 RCTs, n = 430], and magnesium valproate [3 RCTs, n = 228]) were analyzed. The means weighted by sample size were 12.1 weeks for treatment duration, 36.2 years for age, and 61% for male frequency. Significant superiority in total psychopathology was observed for topiramate (P < .0001), lamotrigine (P = .05), and sodium valproate (P = .002), compared to clozapine monotherapy. After removing outliers, the positive effect of sodium valproate remained, but the positive effect of lamotrigine disappeared (P = .40). Significantly improved efficacy in positive and general symptom severity was observed for topiramate (P = .04 and P = .02, respectively) and sodium valproate (P = .009 and P = .003, respectively). There were no significant differences regarding adverse drug reactions and all-cause discontinuations except for topiramate, which was associated with more all-cause discontinuations (RR = 1.99; 95% CI, 1.16 to 3.39; P = .01; I² = 0%; NNH = 7). CONCLUSIONS Sodium valproate augmentation was efficacious and safe. Topiramate augmentation had a too-high discontinuation rate. High-quality RCTs are needed to inform clinical recommendations.

Abstract
Hyperprolactinemia is a common and severe antipsychotic-induced adverse drug reaction. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials systematically examined the efficacy and safety of adjunctive metformin for antipsychotic-related hyperprolactinemia in schizophrenia patients. Two independent investigators searched, extracted, and synthesized data. Weighted mean differences and risk ratios with their 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random effect model. Four randomized controlled trials ( n=509) comparing adjunctive metformin ( n=253) with the control groups ( n=256), lasting 22.7 weeks of treatment, were included in the meta-analysis. The metformin group had significantly lower serum prolactin level at endpoint (four randomized controlled trials, n=501; weighted mean difference: -6.87 ug/L (95% confidence interval: -13.24 to -0.51), p=0.03; I2=80%) with "moderate quality" based on the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation system. In patients with menstrual disturbances, the rate of menstruation resumption was 66.7% in the metformin group and 4.8% in the control group. Adverse drug reactions and all-cause discontinuation (three randomized controlled trials, n=339, risk ratio: 0.76 (95% confidence interval: 0.29, 1.97), p=0.57; I2= 0%) were similar between the two groups. Adjunctive metformin appears to be effective and safe for reducing antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia and prolactin-related symptoms in schizophrenia patients. Higher quality randomized controlled trials with a large sample size are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Integrins, a family of heterodimeric receptors for extracellular matrix, are promising therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer, particularly high-grade serous-type (HGSOC), as they drive tumor cell attachment, migration, proliferation and survival by activating focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-dependent signaling. Owing to the potential off-target effects of FAK inhibitors, disruption of the integrin signaling axis remains to be a challenge. Here, we tackled this barrier by screening for inhibitors being functionally cooperative with small-molecule VS-6063, a phase II FAK inhibitor. From this screening, JQ1, a potent inhibitor of Myc oncogenic network, emerged as the most robust collaborator. Treatment with a combination of VS-6063 and JQ1 synergistically caused an arrest of tumor cells at the G2/M phase and a decrease in the XIAP-linked cell survival. Our subsequent mechanistic analyses indicate that this functional cooperation was strongly associated with the concomitant disruption of activation or expression of FAK and c-Myc as well as their downstream signaling through the PI3K/Akt pathway. In line with these observations, we detected a strong co-amplification or upregulation at genomic or protein level for FAK and c-Myc in a large portion of primary tumors in the TCGA or a local HGSOC patient cohort. Taken together, our results suggest that the integrin–FAK signaling axis and c-Myc synergistically drive cell proliferation, survival and oncogenic potential in HGSOC. As such, our study provides key genetic, functional and signaling bases for the small-molecule-based co-targeting of these two distinct oncogenic drivers as a new line of targeted therapy against human ovarian cancer.

Abstract
This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of adjunctive minocycline for schizophrenia. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing adjunctive minocycline with placebo in patients with schizophrenia were included in the meta-analysis. Two independent investigators extracted and synthesized data. Standard mean differences (SMDs), risk ratio (RR) ±95% confidence intervals (CIs) and the number-needed-to-harm (NNH) were calculated. Eight RCTs with 548 schizophrenia patient including 286 (52.2%) patients on minocycline (171.9±31.2mg/day) and 262 (47.8%) on placebo completed 18.5±13.4 weeks of treatment. Meta-analyses of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) (7 RCTs with 8 treatment arms)/Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) (1 RCT) total score [SMD: -0.64, (95%CI: -1.02, -0.27), P=0.0008; I2=74%], positive, negative and general symptom scores [SMD: -0.69 to -0.22 (95%CI: -0.98, -0.03), P=0.02-0.00001; I2=7-63%] revealed a significant superiority of adjunctive minocycline treatment over the placebo. There was no significant difference regarding neurocognitive function, discontinuation rate and adverse drug reactions between the two groups. This meta-analysis showed that adjunctive minocycline appears to be efficacious and safe for schizophrenia. Due to significant heterogeneity, future studies with a large sample size are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) quantification can reflect the level of HBV replication and can be used as a surrogate maker for the evaluation of infected cells. Recent studies have shown that HBsAg quantification can help to distinguish the nature history of chronic hepatitis B and predict spontaneous clearance of HBsAg and the risk of progressive liver diseases. The dynamic change in HBsAg helps to predict the therapeutic effects of interferon and nucleoside analogues and sustained virologic response, guide withdrawal, and improve and optimize the therapeutic strategy for chronic hepatitis B in clinical practice. These issues have become the hot topics in recent years. However, the cut-off values of HBsAg level in patient management and various therapeutic strategies have not been determined. This article reviews the research advances in the significance of HBsAg quantification in the natural history and optimized treatment of chronic hepatitis B.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In China, Wuling capsule, a traditional Chinese medicine consisting of Wuling mycelia of Xylaria nigripes (Kl.) Sacc (a rare type of fungus), is used to treat major depressive disorders. A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of Wuling capsule alone with Wuling capsule-antidepressant combination in the treatment of major depressive disorders. METHODS Two assessors independently selected studies, extracted data, and conducted quality assessment and data synthesis. Standard mean difference, risk ratio (RR) ± 95% confidence interval (CI), the number needed to treat, and the number needed to harm were analysed. RESULTS A total of 12 randomised controlled trials (880 patients; mean age ± standard deviation, 39.7 ± 12.5 years; male patients, 41%) were identified, including 4 trials with Wuling capsule alone (n = 340) and 8 with Wuling capsule-antidepressant (sertraline, mianserin, mirtazapine, and paroxetine) combination (n = 540). The mean length of trial was 5.7 ± 1.3 weeks. Meta-analysis of symptomatic improvement at last-observation endpoint and study-defined response and remission revealed no significant differences between the Wuling capsule alone and antidepressant monotherapy. The Wuling capsule-antidepressant cotreatment was superior to antidepressant monotherapy in symptomatic improvement at last-observation endpoint (standard mean difference: -0.46, p = 0.001) as well as study-defined response (68.4% vs. 56.0%, RR = 1.23; p = 0.03) and remission (46.5% vs. 34.5%, RR = 1.35; p = 0.05). Wuling capsule was associated with fewer adverse drug reactions than antidepressant monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Adjunctive Wuling capsule may augment the effects of antidepressants and may be associated with fewer adverse drug reactions. More large-scale and rigorously designed randomised controlled trials with large sample size are warranted to clarify the effectiveness of Wuling capsule for major depressive disorders.

Abstract
Eucalyptus is widely planted in the tropics and subtropics, and it has become an important cash crop in Southern China because of its fast-growing nature. In the Guangxi Province of southern China, Eucalyptus is produced on approximately 2 million ha, and two dominant asexual clones, Guanglin No. 9 (E. grandis × E. urophylla) and DH3229 (E. urophylla × E. grandis), are grown. Diseases are an increasing threat to Eucalyptus production in Guangxi since vast areas are monocultured with this plant. In June 2013, a leaf spot disease was observed in eight out of 14 regions in the province on a total of approximately 0.08 million ha of Eucalyptus. Initially, the lesions appeared as water-soaked dots on leaves, which then became circular or irregular shaped with central gray-brown necrotic lesions and dark red-brown margins. The size of leaf spots ranged between 1 and 3 mm in diameter. The main vein or small veins adjacent to the spots were dark. The lesions expanded rapidly during rainy days, producing reproductive structures. In severe cases, the spots coalesced and formed large irregular necrotic areas followed by defoliation. The causal fungus was isolated from diseased leaves. Briefly, the affected leaves were washed with running tap water, sterilized with 75% ethanol (30 s) and 0.1% mercuric dichloride (3 min), and then rinsed three times with sterilized water. Small segments (0.5 to 0.6 cm2) were cut from the leading edge of the lesions and plated on PDA. The plates were incubated at 25°C for 7 to 10 days. When mycelial growth and spores were observed, a single-spore culture was placed on PDA and grown in the dark at 25°C for 10 days. A pathogenicity test was done by spraying a conidial suspension (5 × 105 conidia ml-1) of isolated fungus onto 30 3-month-old leaves of Guanglin No. 9 seedlings. The plants were covered with plain plastic sheets for 7 days to keep the humidity high. Lesions similar to those observed in the forests were observed on the inoculated leaves 7 to 10 days after incubation. The same fungus was re-isolated. Leaves of control plants (sprayed with sterilized water) were disease free. Conidiophores of the fungus were straight to slightly curved, erect, unbranched, septate, and pale to light brown. Conidia were formed in chains or singly with 4 to 15 pseudosepta, which were oblong oval to cylindrical, subhyaline to pale olivaceous brown, straight to curved, 14.5 to 92.3 μm long, and 3.5 to 7.1 μm wide. The fungus was morphologically identified as Corynespora cassiicola (1). DNA of the isolate was extracted, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (which included ITS 1, 5.8S rDNA gene of rDNA, and ITS 2) was amplified with primers ITS5 and ITS4. 529 base pair (bp) of PCR product was obtained and sequenced. The sequence was compared by BLAST search to the GenBank database and showed 99% similarity to C. cassiicola (Accession No. JX087447). Our sequence was deposited into GenBank (KF669890). The biological characters of the fungus were tested. Its minimum and maximum growth temperatures on PDA were 7 and 37°C with an optimum range of 25 to 30°C. At 25°C in 100% humidity, 90% of conidia germinated after 20 h. The optimum pH for germination was 5 to 8, and the lethal temperature of conidia was 55°C. C. cassiicola has been reported causing leaf blight on Eucalyptus in India and Brazil (2,3) and causing leaf spot on Akebia trifoliate in Guangxi (4). This is the first report of this disease on Eucalyptus in China. References: (1) M. B. Ellis and P. Holliday. CMI Descriptions of Pathogenic Fungi and Bacteria, No. 303. Abstract
To characterize the mechanisms of action of taurocholic acid(TCA) and farnesoid X receptor(FXR) on organic anion transporting polypeptide 1A2(OATP1A2) expression in placental Bewo cell line. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blots were used to detect OATP1A2 in Bewo cells cultured with TCA and pcDNA3.1(+)-hFXR transfected Bewo cells after incubation with 2 mM TCA for 48 hours. TCA(0.02 mM) induced the mRNA and protein expression of OATP1A2 by 3 and 1.6 fold (p<0.05), respectively, while 0.2 and 2 mM TCA induced mRNA and protein expression by 1.5 and 1.3 fold, respectively. The concentration of TCA was negatively correlated with OATP1A2 gene expression (P<0.05). In pcDNA3.1(+)-hFXR transfected Bewo cells with 2 mM TCA demonstrated a 2-3 fold increase in OATP1A2 over controls (P<0.05). TCA is one of the regulation factors for OATP1A2 in the Bewo cell line. A low dose of TCA can induce fetal membrane expression of OATP1A2. This may present a physiological or compensatory mechanism of the placenta, while the high dose of TCA may produce a pathological or pathogenic mechanism. Farnesoid X receptor may act in synergy with TCA to increase the expression of OATP1A2. This may be a treatment strategy for fetal cholestasis.

Abstract
Haemaphysalis longicornis (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is an important vector of transovarially transmitted parasites of the genus Babesia (Piroplasmida: Babesiidae). In the present study, we investigated the morphological characteristics and developmental changes of the ovary of H. longicornis. We show that the ovary of H. longicornis has a single tubular structure and is surrounded by a tunica propria. There is a longitudinal groove along one side of the ovary. During feeding and after engorgement, great changes can be observed in the ovary of H. longicornis and two rapid growth phases can be detected. The number of major protein bands of the ovary is significantly increased from day 3 of feeding and reaches a maximum on the day of engorgement. Therefore, the great diversity of proteins in the ovaries of H. longicornis can facilitate the identification of new targets for vaccine development.

Abstract
An analytical model for energy absorption during the interaction of an ultrashort, ultraintense laser with an overdense plasma is proposed. Both the compression effect of the electron density profile and the oscillation of the electron plasma surface are self-consistently included, which exhibit significant influences on the laser energy absorption. Based on our model, the general scaling law of the compression effect depending on laser strength and initial density is derived, and the temporal variation of the laser absorption due to the boundary oscillating effect is presented. It is found that due to the oscillation of the electron plasma surface, the laser absorption rate will vibrate periodically at ω or 2ω frequency for the p-polarized and s-polarized laser, respectively. The effect of plasma collision on the laser absorption has also been investigated, which shows a considerable rise in absorption with increasing electron-ion collision frequency for both polarizations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the anatomical alterations of the cardinal ligaments (CL) and uterosacral ligaments (USL) in women with uterine prolapse by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRI three-dimensional reconstruction (3DR). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with uterine prolapse and 40 volunteers with normal support underwent thin layer scan MRI. The 3D models were reconstructed with MRI data and 3D software. Origin, inserted end, geometric shape features of the CL and USL, were compared between the two groups, and the correlation in study group between the MRI and surgical dissection were reported. RESULTS In the study group, trauma was found in the USL in the insertion or origin. The dorsal USL attached to the sacrum in four (10%) patients was quite different from 12 (30%) patients of the control group. There was no significant difference in the inserted end of the USL between the two groups, nor in the origin and inserted end of the CL. In the study group, MRI and MRI 3DR better evaluated the anatomical characteristics of the USL compared to intraoperative detection via laparoscopy. DISCUSSION The approach using MRI and MRI 3DR can non-invasively detect the anatomic abnormality associated with the USL in uterine prolapsed women and can be a useful preoperative planning tool.

Abstract
A new synthetic approach has been developed to prepare silver@titanium dioxide (Ag@TiO2) core-shell nanostructures with controllable size, shape, crystal phase and function at ambient conditions (e.g. in water, ≤100 ° C). This approach shows a few unique features, including short reaction time (a few minutes) for forming core-shell nanostructures, no requirement of high temperature calcinations for generating TiO2 (e.g. at ~100 ° C in our case), tunable TiO2 shell thickness, high yield and good reproducibility. The experimental results show that the Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity compared to the commercial TiO2 (P25) and Ag-doped TiO2 nanocomposite in the degradation of organic dye molecules (e.g. methyl orange) with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. This could be attributed to the large surface area of TiO2 nanoparticles for maximum harvesting of UV light, mixed anatase and rutile crystalline phases in the TiO2 shell and the effective charge separation between Ag and TiO2 that can reduce the possible recombination of electron-hole (e(-)-h(+)) pairs within TiO2 generated under UV radiation. To further understand the charge separation situation within Ag-TiO2 composites, theoretical simulation (e.g. density functional theory, DFT) was employed in this study. The DFT simulation results indicate that for the Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, photo-generated electrons transfer readily from the external TiO2 layer to the internal Ag layer with heavy accumulation compared to those doping Ag on TiO2 surfaces, which may reduce the recombination of e(-)-h(+) pairs and thus enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. The findings may open a new strategy to synthesize TiO2-based photocatalysts with highly enhanced efficiency for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
Simultaneous generation of monoenergetic tunable protons and carbon ions from intense laser multi-component nanofoil interaction is demonstrated by using particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that, the protons with the largest charge-to-mass ratio are instantly separated from other ion species and are efficiently accelerated in the "phase stable" way. The carbon ions always ride on the heavier oxygen ion front with an electron-filling gap between the protons and carbon ions. At the cost of widely spread oxygen ions, monoenergetic collimated protons and carbon ions are obtained simultaneously. By modulating the heavier ion densities in the foil, it is capable to control the final beam quality, which is well interpreted by a simple analytical model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Scoliosis is the disease which has a long history over one century. However, the pathogenesis remains unclear at present. To demonstrate the effect of different selenium content in environment on the morbidity of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). METHODS Retrospective cohort study (follow-up from 1997 to 2009): compare the difference morbidity between high selenium group and the normal selenium group of AIS. PATIENTS 9998 cases from three areas in China were participated in this study. There is different selenium content in these three areas. RESULTS High selenium levels were significant associated with the AIS morbidity. While low selenium level had no significant correlation with the AIS morbidity. CONCLUSIONS This study confirmed that high selenium content in the environment was one of risk factors for idiopathic scoliosis. We speculated that the excessive growth of the spine and the spinal cord asynchronous growth effect were key factors that high selenium content in the environment leads to scoliosis.

Abstract
The dynamics of magnetic fields with an amplitude of several tens of megagauss, generated at both sides of a solid target irradiated with a high-intensity (~10(19) W/cm(2)) picosecond laser pulse, has been spatially and temporally resolved using a proton imaging technique. The amplitude of the magnetic fields is sufficiently large to have a constraining effect on the radial expansion of the plasma sheath at the target surfaces. These results, supported by numerical simulations and simple analytical modeling, may have implications for ion acceleration driven by the plasma sheath at the rear side of the target as well as for the laboratory study of self-collimated high-energy plasma jets.

Abstract
Contrasting winter wheat cultivars, salt-tolerant DK961 and intolerant JN17, which sown in no salinity (-S) and salinity (+S) boxes were exposed to charcoal filtered air (CF) and elevated O(3) (+O(3)) in open top chambers (OTCs) for 30 days. In -S DK961 and JN17 plants, +O(3) DK961 and JN17 plants had significantly lower light-saturated net photosynthetic rates (A(sat), 26% and 24%), stomatal conductance (g(s), 20% and 32%) and chlorophyll contents (10% and 21%), while O(3) considerably increased foliar electrolyte leakage (13% and 39%), malondialdehyde content (9% and 23%), POD activity and ABA content. However, responses of these parameters to O(3) were significant in DK961 but not in JN17 in +S treatment. Correlation coefficient of DK961 reached significance level of 0.01, but it was not significant in JN17 under interaction of O(3) and salinity. O(3)-induced reductions were larger in shoot than in root in both cultivars. Results indicate that the salt-tolerant cultivar sustained less damage from salinity than did the intolerant cultivar but was severely injured by O(3) under +S condition. Therefore, selecting for greater salt tolerance may not lead to the expected gains in yield in areas of moderate (100 mM) salinity when O(3) is present in high concentrations. In contrast, salinity-induced stomatal closure effectively reduced sensitivity to O(3) in the salt-intolerant cultivar. Hence we suggest salt-tolerant winter wheat cultivars might be well adapted to areas of high (>100 mM) salinity and O(3) stress, while intolerant cultivars might be adaptable to areas of mild/moderate salinity but high O(3) pollution.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the mechanism of ozone-induced damage to cytoplasmic membrane and cell ultrastructure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853. METHODS AND RESULTS Cell suspensions of Ps. aeruginosa ATCC27853 were treated with ozonated water. The leakages of cellular potassium (K⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), determined by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) and a commercial bioluminescence assay kit, were to assess ozone-induced damage to the cytoplasmic membrane. Maximum leakages of K⁺ and Mg²⁺ were attained, respectively, at 0·53 mg l⁻¹ ozone after 0·5 and 2 min with > 99% inactivation of culturable bacteria, while that of ATP was achieved at 0·67 mg l⁻¹ ozone after 1 min. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that treated cells retained intact shapes and cytoplasm agglutinations and vacuoles occurred. CONCLUSIONS Ozone inactivates Ps. aeruginosa ATCC27853 by the combined results of increased cytoplasmic membrane permeability and cytoplasm coagulation, rather than by severe membrane disruption and cell lysis. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common water-related pathogen. These insights into the leakage of cytoplasmic components and ultrastructural changes provide evidence for the mechanisms of ozone-mediated inactivation.

Abstract
Maize is an important source of pro-vitamin A; beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, and the non-pro-vitamin A carotenoids including lutein and zeaxanthin. In the present study, a recombinant inbred (RI) population with 233 RI lines derived from a cross between By804 and B73 was employed to detect QTL for these nutritionally important components in maize grain. High Performance Liquid Chromatography was used to measure amounts of individual carotenoids over 2 years. A genetic linkage map was constructed with 201 molecular markers. In all, 31 putative QTL including 23 for individual and 8 for total carotenoids were detected on chromosome(s) 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10. The notable aspect of this study was that much of the phenotypic variation in contents of carotenoids could be explained by two loci (y1 and y9), and the QTL for carotenoids elucidated the interrelationships among these compounds at the molecular level. A gene targeted marker (Y1ssr) in the candidate gene phytoene synthase 1 (psy1) tightly linked to a major QTL explaining 6.6-27.2% phenotypic variation for levels of carotenoids was identified, which may prove useful to expedite breeding for higher level of carotenoids in maize grain. This functionally characterized gene (psy1) could also be exploited for further development of functional marker for carotenoids in maize. The QTL cluster located at y9 locus may also be used for pyramiding favorable alleles controlling contents of carotenoids from diverse maize germplasm.

Abstract
A kind of optical pH sensor was demonstrated that is based on a pH-sensitive fluorescence dye-doped (eosin) cellulose acetate (CA) thin-film modified microstructured polymer optical fiber (MPOF). It was obtained by directly inhaling an eosin-CA-acetic acid mixed solution into array holes in a MPOF and then removing the solvent (acetic acid). The sensing film showed different fluorescence intensities to different pH solutions in a pH range of 2.5-4.5. Furthermore, the pH response range could be tailored through doping a surfactant, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), in the sensing film.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nestin, an intermediate filament (IF) protein, is expressed in proliferating progenitor cells of developmental and regenerating tissues, and is identified as a neuroepithelial precursor cell marker. Recently, nestin was detected in some neoplasms such as glioma, ependymoma, melanoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST), and testicular stromal tumour. Moreover, the expression intensity of nestin exhibited significant correlation with the malignant grade of glioma. AIMS To detect the expression of nestin in different tumours and to analyse the relationship between the expression of nestin and the malignant grade of the tumours. METHODS Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded surgical samples of neoplastic tissues were obtained from the Department of Pathology of Sun Yat-sen University. Histological analysis and immunohistochemical staining for nestin were performed. Histoscores were analysed by semi-quantitative evaluation. RESULTS Nestin was expressed predominantly in the cytoplasm of angiosarcoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma and GIST samples, and some tumour cells expressed in the nucleus. There was a statistically significant difference between the histoscore of nestin in high malignant GIST (2.2366 (0.6920)) and that in low malignant GIST (1.3783 (0.4268)) (p = 0.003); and also between that in high malignant angiosarcoma (1.9188 (0.2069)) and that in low malignant angiosarcoma (0.6474 (0.3273)) (p = 0.000). Cavernous angioma did not express nestin. The histoscore of nestin in high malignant pancreatic adenocarcinoma (7/14) was 1.1767 (0.4676), and that in low malignant pancreatic adenocarcinoma (3/8) was 0.6577 (0.0056) (no significant difference, p = 0.112). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that the expression of nestin may play an important role in the development of some neoplasms such as GIST and angiosarcoma.

Abstract
The postoperative programmed muscle tension induced by functional electrical stimulation (FES) was evaluated for its potential efficacy on acceleration of osteotendinous junction healing using an established partial patellectomy model in rabbits. After immobilization of the operated knee for 6 weeks, daily FES was applied to quadriceps muscles for 30 minutes per day and 5 days per week for 6 weeks in the treatment group and compared with the non-treatment control group at postoperative week 12 and 18, radiologically, histologically and biomechanically. Results showed that FES-induced muscle tension significantly increased new bone formation, bone mineral density, and fibrocartilage zone restoration in the osteotendinous healing interface. The failure load and ultimate strength of the repairing osteotendinous complex were also improved significantly with healing over time. In conclusion, the postoperative programmed FES-induced muscle tension was favorable for acceleration of osteotendinous junction repair and therefore recommended for clinical trails in orthopedic sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Abstract
In 2002, the Beijing Committee for Disease Prevention launched guidelines based on the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion on health promoting hospitals (HPHs). HPH pilot projects were then initiated, on a voluntary basis, in 44 Beijing hospitals. Evaluations have been undertaken to assess the impacts of the pilot project. This article outlines this HPH project, its development and evaluation and reports on the attitudes and contribution of hospital management as determined by questionnaires and interviews from 281 managerial employees from 106 Beijing hospitals (93 from pilot hospitals and 188 from control). The results of the evaluation indicate that long-term health promotion planning and health promotion specialized funds have been better established in pilot hospitals than in the control group and also that the concept of HPH is better understood by managerial staff in pilot hospitals than by those in control hospitals. The main perceived barriers faced in the development of HPH are shortages of funds, personnel, time management and professional skills. To further develop HPHs in China, effort needs to be made to ensure that hospital leaders and management are considered first. If managerial staff have an appropriate understanding of the concept and principles of HPH, then it is more likely that health promotion activities can be introduced into the daily workings of hospitals, and the necessary funds, personnel and training on health promotion skills be provided.

Abstract
Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is one of the most versatile soluble biomaterials having wide-ranging applications. The shear storage, G', and loss, G", moduli of this hydrocolloid were recorded as functions of angular frequency varying from 0.1 to 100.0 rad/s and temperature from 5 to 50 degrees C. It was found that both G' and G" mainly increase with angular frequency in the range from 0.1 to 100 rad/s. As the temperature increases from 5 to 95 degrees C, the values of G' and G" decrease. A novel criterion for the thermorheologically simple material, and a procedure to calculate the shift factor from the angular frequency sweep and temperature ramp data were presented. By these methods, the KGM hydrocolloid is found to obey the TTS principle as log G" and log G' are less than 1.529 and 1.436, respectively. The Williams-Landel-Ferry equation can describe the shift factor of the KGM hydrocolloid.

Abstract
The retinoblastoma protein-interacting zinc finger gene RIZ (PRDM2) is a member, by sequence homology, of a nuclear protein-methyltransferase (MTase) superfamily involved in chromatin-mediated gene expression. The gene produces two protein products, RIZ1 that contains a conserved MTase domain and RIZ2 that lacks the domain. RIZ1 gene expression is frequently silenced in human cancers, and the gene is also a common target of frameshift mutation in microsatellite-unstable cancers. We now report studies of mice with a targeted mutation in the RIZ1 locus. The mutation inactivates RIZ1 but not RIZ2. These RIZ1 mutant mice were viable and fertile but showed a high incidence of diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBL) and a broad spectrum of unusual tumors. RIZ1 deficiency also accelerated tumorigenesis in p53 heterozygous mutant mice. Finally, several missense mutations of RIZ1 were found in human tumor tissues and cell lines; one of these was particularly common in human DLBL tumors. These missense mutations, as well as the previously described frameshift mutation, all mapped to the MTase functional domains. All abolished the capacity of RIZ1 to enhance estrogen receptor activation of transcription. These data suggest a direct link between tumor formation and the MTase domain of RIZ1 and describe for the first time a tumor susceptibility gene among methyltransferases.

Abstract
MCF-7, a breast cancer-derived cell line, is deficient of caspase 3 and relatively insensitive to many chemotherapeutic agents. To study the association of caspase 3 deficiency and chemotherapeutic resistance, we reconstituted caspase 3 in MCF-7 cells and characterized their apoptotic response to doxorubicin and etoposide. Western blots demonstrated that caspase 3 was constitutively expressed in the reconstituted MCF-7 cells. Both morphological observation and survival assays showed that caspase 3 reconstitution significantly sensitized MCF-7 cells to both drugs. Remarkably increased activation of caspases 3, 6, and 7, cleavage of cellular death substrates, and DNA fragmentation were detected in the reconstituted MCF-7 cells after drug treatment. Together, these data demonstrated a specific role for caspase 3 in chemotherapy-induced apoptosis and in activation of caspases 6 and 7. Our results also suggest that caspase 3 deficiency may contribute to chemotherapeutic resistance in breast cancer.

Abstract
The design and characteristics of a novel drop-based fluorescence-detection technique for the determination of mercury(II) are described. The method, using a flow injection technique, is based on the renewable-drops of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine(TMB), which are formed at the bottom tip of a silica capillary tube connected to the end of the flow system. An excitation beam from a high-pressure Hg lamp directly illuminates the drops, the fluorescence emission is conducted to a photodiode (PD) to convert the photocurrent into a voltage signal (mV). Optimum analytical conditions for Hg(II) assays have been established. In NaAc/HAc buffer at pH 3.09 this assay has a wide linear range for Hg(II) from 8.0 x 10(-8) to 2.0 x 10(-5) mol/L with a detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-8) mol/L. The use of renewable drops allowing a fresh reaction surface for each sample is of particular value to solving the problems of irreversible reactions. Besides its high sensitivity, the method permits a simple, fast, and inexpensive measurement with only micro-quantities of reagent consumption. The technique described provides a simple and sensitive way to fabricate sensors of feasible prospects and commercial advantages.
