[Effect of docosahexenoic acid microalgae oil supplementation during pregnancy and lactation on levels of serum polyunsaturated fatty acid and tolerance to ovalbumin in suckling mice]

Objective: To study the tolerance to ovalbumin (OVA) in suckling mice whose mothers had different doses of docosahexenoic acid (DHA) microalgae oil (DMO) supplementation during pregnancy and lactation. Method: According to different doses of DMO fed to mother mice during pregnancy and lactation, 66 suckling mice were divided into four groups. Suckling mice whose mothers were fed with 0.7% DMO were designated as low dose group (group L) (n=16), 2.1% DMO as middle dose group (group M) (n=16), 3.5% DMO as high dose group (group H) (n=17) and no DMO as control group (n=17). Before exposing to OVA, 8 suckling mice were killed in each group at 21-day-old. Remaining suckling mice were killed at 59-day-old after repeated OVA exposure. The serum polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels of suckling mice were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) at the age of 21- and 59-day.Histological examinations of jejunum were performed by HE staining and the mast cells in jejunum were observed by toluidine blue staining. OVA-IgE in serum, total IgA and OVA-IgA in the feces and IL-4 and IFN-γ in the supernatants of splenic mononuclear cells (SMC) were measured by ELISA. Real time PCR was performed to identify the gene expression of IL-10, TGF-β1 mRNA in SMC. Differences among groups were compared by one-way AVOVA and that between each group were compared by LSD. Result: In group M and H, the serum levels of n-3DHA (108±29)μg/ml; (102±34)μg/ml vs.(40±19)μg/ml (F=12.052, P=0.000)and n-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (6.7±2.3)μg/ml; (7.7±2.0)μg/ml vs. (3.9±1.1)μg/ml(F=9.573, P=0.000) were significantly higher than that in control group at the age of 21-day. The serum levels of n-3DHA were higher in group H (17.1±2.9)μg/ml than that in control group (5.9±3.3) μg/ml after repeated OVA exposure at the age of 59-day (F=10.339, P<0.000). Compared with control group (53±12) pg/ml, the levels of IL-4 in SMC in group H (42±9)pg/ml were lower (F=2.484, P<0.05). Conclusion: The serum levels of DHA in baby mice, whose mothers was fed with DMO during pregnancy and lactation, were significantly increased till adulthood. However, the effect on tolerance to OVA was limited.

Development of beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic on EAST

Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic based on Neutron Beam Injection (NBI) on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak has been developed. This system consists of 16 × 8 channels which can diagnose the density fluctuation in a rectangular area of about 20 × 10 cm² in the cross section, whose radial position is adjustable from the core to edge just by means of changing the angle of the rotation mirror. The spatial resolution is about 1-3 cm according to the diagnosed radial position. The temporal resolution is 1 μs. Space calibration of the diagnostic system is done based on the reversibility of the optical path. The NBI modulation experiment shows the success of BES development.

[Interpretation of consensuses on treatment of female patients with periodontal disease]

Periodontal tissue is the target tissue of sex hormone, physiological change of sex hormones affects the response of periodontal tissue to bacterial plague. The treatment of periodontal disease of female patients in special periods such as adolescence, menstruation, prepregnancy, pregnancy, puerperium, and menopause should be chosen carefully and correctly. This article attempts to expound these issues.

[Oxidative stress and antioxitant therapy of chronic periodontitis]

Chronic periodontitis is a progressive, infectious inflammation disease, caused by the dysbiosis of oral resident flora, leading to the destruction of periodontium. The onset of pathogenic microorganisms is the etiological factor of periodontitis, while the immuno-inflammatory response affects the progression of the disease. Under chronic periodontitis, oxidative stress occurs when excessive reactive oxygen species are produced and exceed the compensative capacity of the organism. Oxidative stress leads to the destruction of periodontium, in a direct way(damaging the biomolecule) or an indirect way(enhancing the produce of inflammatory cytokine and destructive enzymes). Therefore, as the antagonist of the reactive oxygen species, antioxidants may be helpful to treat the chronic periodontitis. This paper reviewed relevant literatures about the destructive role of excessive reactive oxygen species and protective role of antioxidants in chronic periodontitis.

Increased expression of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 and 2 in inflamed human gingiva

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Periodontitis is an infectious disease in which the host immune and inflammatory responses play essential roles in resistance to bacterial infection, as well as the induction of tissue destruction if the immune response is dysregulated. The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREMs) modulates inflammatory and innate immune signaling. TREM-1 is considered as an amplifier of the immune response, while TREM-2 is a negative regulator that has yet to be explored in periodontal disease before. We hypothesized that TREMs participated in the innate immune responses during the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate TREM-1 and TREM-2 expression in the gingival tissues from patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy subjects as well as their correlation with clinical periodontal parameters. This study is the first to identify TREM-2 in periodontal tissue, as well as the protein expression changes of TREM-1 and TREM-2 in periodontal tissues.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Gingival tissue sections were collected from 31 healthy subjects and 53 patients with chronic periodontitis. Immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were employed to evaluate the protein and mRNA expression of these receptors in gingival tissues. The recorded clinical parameters were probing depth, clinical attachment loss, plaque index and bleeding on probing.

RESULTS

In addition to myeloid cells in gingival connective tissues, TREM-1 and TREM-2 were also found expressed in gingival epithelial cells. In particular, TREM-1 was detected in almost all gingival epithelium from both healthy and inflamed biopsies. The expression levels of TREM-1 and TREM-2 were significantly increased in the periodontitis group compared to the healthy group. Increased levels of these receptors are to be positively correlated with site-specific periodontal parameters.

CONCLUSION

The increased expression of TREM-1 and TREM-2 levels in periodontitis may confer diagnostic and potential therapeutic targets as well as indicating their association with the clinical severity of the disease.

[Relationship between body weight status in early adulthood and body weight change to middle age and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in middle aged Chinese people]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the relationship between early adulthood weight status and body weight changes from early adulthood to middle age and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level.

METHODS

Data were obtained from China Multicenter Collaborative Study of Cardiovascular Epidemiology Study, which was conducted in 1998, 15 participants population samples aged from 35-59 years old from 12 provinces were selected by random cluster sampling. Approximately 1 000 men and women in each sample population were surveyed for cardiovascular disease risk factors, body weight at age 25 from all participants were also obtained. Body mass index (BMI) at the age of 25 years was calculated with the weight at 25 years and the height measured during the survey, participants were divided into underweight (BMI<18.5 kg/m(2), n=1 331), normal-weight (18.5 kg/m(2)≤BMI <24 kg/m(2), n=10 400), overweight (24 kg/m(2)≤BMI<28 kg/m(2), n=2 019) and obesity (BMI≥28 kg/m(2), n=133) groups. Weight change was defined as the difference between the body weight at the age of 25 and at the survey and was grouped into<-7.5 kg (n=903), -7.5--2.6 kg (n=1 883), -2.5-2.5 kg (n=2 573), 2.6-7.5 kg (n=2 786), 7.6-12.5 kg (n=2 674) and>12.5 kg (n=3 064). The association of body weight status in early adulthood and body weight change from early adulthood to middle age with HDL-C level was examined by logistic regression model.

RESULTS

The prevalence of low HDL-C in underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity groups at age of 25 years were 10.7%(143/1 331), 15.5%(1 612/10 400), 16.3%(330/2 019) and 24.8%(33/133), respectively(P for trend <0.01). The prevalence of low HDL-C for adult weight change were 8.8%(79/903), 8.0%(151/1 883), 10.5%(269/2 573), 13.4%(373/2 786), 19.1%(511/2 674), and 24.0%(735/3 064)(P for trend <0.01)for weight change of <-7.5 kg, -7.5--2.6 kg, -2.5-2.5 kg, 2.6-7.5 kg, 7.6-12.5 kg and>12.5 kg, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed that overweight and obesity at age of 25 years and subsequent weight gain till middle age were positively correlated with low HDL-C after adjusted other risk factors(all P for trend <0.01).

CONCLUSION

Overweight and obesity in early adulthood and significant adult weight gain from early adulthood to middle age were both independently associated with marked increases in the risk of low HDL-C in middle-aged Chinese men and women. Thus, body weight control at early adulthood could be a key strategy to reduce the incidence of low HDL-C at middle-aged population.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of additional docetaxel for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer treated with androgen-deprivation therapy from a Chinese perspective

The E3805 (CHAARTED) study found that docetaxel combined with androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) significantly improved overall survival of patients with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. This study aims to determine whether docetaxel combined with ADT is a cost-effective strategy for advanced prostate cancer in China. According to the E3805 study, two groups (docetaxel + ADT and ADT alone) and three health states [progression-free survival (PFS), progressive disease (PD) and death] were analysed in a Markov model. All medical costs were calculated from the Chinese societal perspective. Quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were applied as the primary outcome. Overall, the addition of docetaxel was estimated to increase the cost by $12 816.93, with a gain of 0.48 QALY. Additionally, for patients with high-volume disease, the increased cost and effectiveness were $14 627.75 and 0.69 QALYs in docetaxel + ADT group versus the ADT alone group, and the ICER was $21 199.63 per QALY. These ICERs are far more than the commonly accepted willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold of $20 301 per QALY in China. In spite of longer survival time, docetaxel combined with ADT is not a recommended cost-effective treatment for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer in the Chinese setting.

Centrality and Transverse Momentum Dependence of Elliptic Flow of Multistrange Hadrons and ϕ Meson in Au+Au Collisions at √[sNN]=200 GeV

We present high precision measurements of elliptic flow near midrapidity (|y|<1.0) for multistrange hadrons and ϕ meson as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy √[sNN]=200  GeV. We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of ϕ and Ω v2 is similar to that of π and p, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0%-30% and 30%-80% collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between ϕ and proton v2 at low transverse momentum in the 0%-30% centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton v2.

[Impact of the time from symptoms onset to thrombolysis on in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular event rate in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the impact of thrombolytic therapy time delay on in-hospital major adverse cardiac event rate in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

METHODS

This survey was performed in 101 level 2 hospitals from 15 provinces or autonomous region in China. Patients admitted to these hospitals with acute STEMI during November 2011 to November 2014 and received thrombolytic therapy were eligible for this study. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was used to estimate the rate of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events (re-infarction, stroke and all-cause mortality) in patients with different thrombolytic time delay.

RESULTS

A total of 3 719 STEMI patients received thrombolytic therapy, 88%(3 270 cases) of them were treated within 12 hours. After controlling for the impact of confounding factors, such as a variety of risk factors, past disease histories, the severity of STEMI, medication, interventions, etc, MACE rates significantly increased along with the thrombolysis time delay, no matter thrombolysis succeeded or not (trend test P<0.05). In group of successful thrombolysis, multivariate adjusted rate of MACE for 0-5.9 hours, 6.0-11.9 hours and ≥12.0 hours were 3.2%, 3.9% and 7.8%; in group of unsuccessful thrombolysis, it was 11.6%, 14.1% and 25.2% respectively (trend test P<0.05). The multivariate adjusted rates of re-infarction in group of successful thrombolysis as well as in group of unsuccessful thrombolysis significantly increased in proportion to thrombolysis time delay ≥ 12.0 h (trend test P<0.05). In group of successful thrombolysis, multivariate adjusted rate of re-infarction for 0-5.9 hours, 6.0-11.9 hours and ≥12.0 hours were 1.9%, 1.5% and 6.8%; in group of unsuccessful thrombolysis, it was 3.9%, 3.1% and 13.6%, respectively. Within the same time delay group, MACE and re-infarction rates were significantly lower in successful thrombolysis group than in unsuccessful thrombolysis group (all P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Thrombolytic therapy should be conducted within 6 hours after the attack. Both re-infarction or MACE rates are significantly increased in patients with more than 12 hours thrombolysis time delay.

Observation of Transverse Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion Pairs in p^{↑}+p at sqrt[s]=200 GeV

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in p^{↑}+p collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of 5 standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities η>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the ρ meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions.

Azimuthal Anisotropy in U+U and Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

Collisions between prolate uranium nuclei are used to study how particle production and azimuthal anisotropies depend on initial geometry in heavy-ion collisions. We report the two- and four-particle cumulants, v_{2}{2} and v_{2}{4}, for charged hadrons from U+U collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=193  GeV and Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV. Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the energy deposited by spectators in zero degree calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of v_{2}{2} on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. We also show that v_{2} vs multiplicity can be better described by models, such as gluon saturation or quark participant models, that eliminate the dependence of the multiplicity on the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions.

Adeno-associated virus-2-mediated TGF-β1 microRNA transfection inhibits adhesion formation after digital flexor tendon injury

Adhesion formation after digital flexor tendon injury greatly affects gliding function of the tendon, which is a major clinical complication after hand surgery. Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) has a critical role in adhesion formation during tendon healing. Persistent regulation of TGF-β1 through application of microRNA (miRNA) specifically inhibiting the function of TGF-β1 (TGF-β1-miRNA) holds promise for treatment of such a complication. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) was used to transfer TGF-β1-miRNA to the chicken digital flexor tendons, which had been injured and surgically repaired. Four doses of AAV2-TGF-β1-miRNA (2 × 10¹¹, 2 × 10¹⁰, 2 × 10⁹ and 2 × 10⁸ vector genomes (vg)) were used to determine the transfection efficiency. At postoperative 3 weeks, we found a positive correlation between the administered AAV2-TGF-β1-miRNA doses and transfection efficiency. The transfection rate ranged from 10% to 77% as the doses increased. Production of TGF-β1 protein in the tendons decreased on increasing vector dosage. When 2 × 10¹¹ and 2 × 10¹⁰) vg were injected into the tendon, gliding excursion of the repaired tendon and work of flexion of chicken toes were significantly increased and adhesion score decreased 6 and 8 weeks later, indicating the improvement of tendon gliding and decreases in adhesion formations. However, the ultimate strength of the tendons transfected at the dose of 2 × 10¹⁰ vg was 12-24% lower than that of the control tendons. The results of this study demonstrate that application of TGF-β1-miRNA had a mixed impact on tendon healing: adhesion around the tendon is reduced but strength of the tendon healing is adversely affected. Future studies should aim at maintaining the beneficial effects of reducing tendon adhesions, while eliminating the adverse effects of decreasing the healing strength.

Evaluation in vivo of autologous cell derived vein grafts based on tissue engineering concept

AIM

Aim of the study was to construct and evaluate of autologous cell derived vein grafts based on tissue engineering concept.

METHODS

In this study, we constructed venous grafts (VGs) in 12 days based on tissue engineering concept. We draw out 8-12 mL of bone marrow from the intended recipient canines (N.=8) to culture and expand endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). After having been labeled with PKH26-GL, the cells were seeded onto the luminal surface of decellularized scaffolds (DSs) with single, rotative method for 4 hours. Following static culture for 24-72 hours, the hybrids were implanted to recipient canine inferior vena cava. Non-seeded DSs (N.=4) were performed as control.

RESULTS

Angiography disclosed that patent number of test (control) group were 7/7 (2/4), 6/6 (2/2) and 4/4 (1/2) at postoperative 10 days, 4 weeks and 12 weeks, respectively. At 12 weeks, confluenced endothelial cells which covered the whole inner luminal surface of the explants were detected. Meanwhile, fibroblasts and α-actin positive cells in the matrices were found. PKH26-GL labeled EPCs sustained on the luminal surface accompanied by newly formed endothelial cells. However, the explants in both groups showed partial stenosis.

CONCLUSION

These results indicate that such constructed VGs based on autologous bone marrow-derived EPCs and porcine DSs are promising and deserve to further improvement and testing.

Precision Measurement of the Longitudinal Double-Spin Asymmetry for Inclusive Jet Production in Polarized Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV

We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_{LL}, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=200  GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

ΛΛ Correlation function in Au+Au collisions at √[S(NN)]=200 GeV

We present ΛΛ correlation measurements in heavy-ion collisions for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV using the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The Lednický-Lyuboshitz analytical model has been used to fit the data to obtain a source size, a scattering length and an effective range. Implications of the measurement of the ΛΛ correlation function and interaction parameters for dihyperon searches are discussed.

The Chinese First-Episode Schizophrenia Trial: background and study design

Schizophrenia is a complex illness with unknown aetiology and pathogenesis. Currently, a considerable number of patients with schizophrenia do not receive standardised and systematic treatment in China. In the past years, many controlled trials have been conducted in chronic schizophrenia. In contrast, research on first-episode schizophrenia is lacking. This paper describes the background and design of the Chinese First-Episode Schizophrenia Trial project--a multicentre, randomised, open-label clinical trial. A total of 600 first-episode schizophrenia patients were randomly divided into 3 groups and treated with risperidone, aripiprazole, and olanzapine for 1 year. During the study period, only 1 medication change of the 3 antipsychotic medications was allowed.

Observation of D0 meson nuclear modifications in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV

We report the first measurement of charmed-hadron (D(0)) production via the hadronic decay channel (D(0) → K(-) + π(+)) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross section per nucleon-nucleon collision at midrapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, N(bin), from p+p to central Au+Au collisions. The D(0) meson yields in central Au + Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in p+p scaled by N(bin), for transverse momenta p(T) > 3 GeV/c, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate p(T) is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Beam energy dependence of moments of the net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We report the first measurements of the moments--mean (M), variance (σ(2)), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ)--of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from sqrt[sNN]=7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net charge, and are sensitive to the location of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, σ(2)/M, Sσ, and κσ(2), with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions (NBDs). The Sσ values deviate from the Poisson baseline and are close to the NBD baseline, while the κσ(2) values tend to lie between the two. Within the present uncertainties, our data do not show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of collision energy. These measurements provide a valuable tool to extract the freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions by comparing with theoretical models.

Measurement of longitudinal spin asymmetries for weak boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC

We report measurements of single- and double-spin asymmetries for W^{±} and Z/γ^{*} boson production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=510  GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for W^{±} were measured as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which provides a theoretically clean probe of the proton's polarized quark distributions at the scale of the W mass. The results are compared to theoretical predictions, constrained by polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements, and show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the range 0.05<x<0.2.

Beam-energy dependence of charge separation along the magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. This implies the dominance of hadronic interactions over partonic ones at lower collision energies.

Effects of Replacement of Soybean Meal by Fermented Cottonseed Meal on Growth Performance, Serum Biochemical Parameters and Immune Function of Yellow-feathered Broilers

The study was conducted to examine the effects of partially replacing soybean meal (SBM) by solid-state fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) on growth performance, serum biochemical parameters and immune function of broilers. After inoculated with Bacillus subtilis BJ-1 for 48 h, the content of free gossypol in cottonseed meal was decreased from 0.82 to 0.21 g/kg. A total of 600, day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates of 50 chicks each. A corn-SBM based control diet was formulated and the experimental diets included 4, 8 or 12% FCSM, replacing SBM. Throughout the experiment, broilers fed 8% FCSM had higher (p<0.05) body weight gain than those fed 0, 4 and 12% FCSM. The feed intake in 8% FCSM group was superior (p<0.05) to other treatments from d 21 to 42. On d 21, the concentration of serum immunoglobin M in the 4% and 8% FCSM groups, as well as the content of complements (C3, C4) in 8% FCSM group were greater (p<0.05) than those in the SBM group. Besides, birds fed 8% FCSM had increased (p<0.05) serum immunoglobin M, immunoglobulin G and complement C4 levels on d 42 compared with bird fed control diet. No differences (p>0.05) were found between treatments regarding the serum biochemical parameters and the relative weights of immune organs. In conclusion, FCSM can be used in broiler diets at up to 12% of the total diet and an appropriate replacement of SBM with FCSM may improve growth performance and immunity in broilers.

Dielectron mass spectra from Au+Au collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV

We report the STAR measurements of dielectron (e(+)e(-)) production at midrapidity (|y(ee)|<1) in Au+Au collisions at √[s(NN)]=200  GeV. The measurements are evaluated in different invariant mass regions with a focus on 0.30-0.76 (ρ-like), 0.76-0.80 (ω-like), and 0.98-1.05 (ϕ-like)   GeV/c(2). The spectrum in the ω-like and ϕ-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the ρ-like region, however, the vacuum ρ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77±0.11(stat)±0.24(syst)±0.33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the ρ meson. The excess yield in the ρ-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the ω and ϕ yields. Theoretical models with broadened ρ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies.

Strain dynamics of ultrathin VO₂ film grown on TiO₂ (001) and the associated phase transition modulation

Tuning the metal insulator transition (MIT) behavior of VO2 film through the interfacial strain is effective for practical applications. However, the mechanism for strain-modulated MIT is still under debate. Here we directly record the strain dynamics of ultrathin VO2 film on TiO2 substrate and reveal the intrinsic modulation process by means of synchrotron radiation and first-principles calculations. It is observed that the MIT process of the obtained VO2 films can be modulated continuously via the interfacial strain. The relationship between the phase transition temperature and the strain evolution is established from the initial film growth. From the interfacial strain dynamics and theoretical calculations, we claim that the electronic orbital occupancy is strongly affected by the interfacial strain, which changes also the electron-electron correlation and controls the phase transition temperature. These findings open the possibility of an active tuning of phase transition for the thin VO2 film through the interfacial lattice engineering.

Contact areas of the scaphoid and lunate with the distal radius in neutral and extension: correlation of falling strategies and distal radial anatomy

The functional neutral of wrist movement is about 10° extension yet the distal radius has a volar tilt. This has not previously been explained. Assuming that the contact area between the carpus and the distal radius increased in wrist extension this would also help stabilize the carpus on the distal radius in positions where typically there is greater loading. To test this hypothesis we reconstructed three-dimensional structures of the carpal bones and distal radius using computed tomography scans of 13 normal wrists. The contact areas of the scaphoid with the distal radius were measured and were found progressively increased from flexion 20°, neutral, extension 20°, to extension 40°. The maximal increases in the contact area of the scaphoid and the distal radius was at full wrist extension. No significant changes in the contact areas of the lunate with the distal radius were found between the different positions. The contact characteristics provide greater stability to the carpus on the distal radius, and to help spread forces from impact to the wrist reducing the transmitted peak forces and thus the risk of distal radius and carpal injuries.

Beam-energy dependence of the directed flow of protons, antiprotons, and pions in Au+Au collisions

Rapidity-odd directed flow (v1) measurements for charged pions, protons, and antiprotons near midrapidity (y=0) are reported in sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At intermediate impact parameters, the proton and net-proton slope parameter dv1/dy|y=0 shows a minimum between 11.5 and 19.6 GeV. In addition, the net-proton dv1/dy|y=0 changes sign twice between 7.7 and 39 GeV. The proton and net-proton results qualitatively resemble predictions of a hydrodynamic model with a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined matter, and differ from hadronic transport calculations.

Jet-hadron correlations in √[s(NN)]=200 GeV p+p and central Au+Au collisions

Azimuthal angular correlations of charged hadrons with respect to the axis of a reconstructed (trigger) jet in Au+Au and p+p collisions at √[s(NN)]=200  GeV in STAR are presented. The trigger jet population in Au+Au collisions is biased toward jets that have not interacted with the medium, allowing easier matching of jet energies between Au+Au and p+p collisions while enhancing medium effects on the recoil jet. The associated hadron yield of the recoil jet is significantly suppressed at high transverse momentum (pTassoc) and enhanced at low pTassoc in 0%-20% central Au+Au collisions compared to p+p collisions, which is indicative of medium-induced parton energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Energy dependence of moments of net-proton multiplicity distributions at RHIC

We report the beam energy (sqrt[sNN]=7.7-200  GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4<pT<0.8  GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the quantum chromodynamic phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσ and κσ2, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and antiproton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

Recent developments in flexor tendon repair techniques and factors influencing strength of the tendon repair

Over the last decade, both basic researchers and surgeons have sought to identify the most appropriate techniques to be applied in flexor tendon repairs. Recent developments in experimental tendon repairs and clinical outcomes of newer repair techniques have been reviewed in an attempt to comprehensively summarize the most critical mechanical factors affecting the performance of tendon repairs and the surgical factors influencing clinical outcomes. Among them, attention to annular pulleys, the purchase and tension of the core suture, and the direction and curvature of the path of tendon motion have been found to be determining factors in the results of tendon repair.

Measurement of J/ψ azimuthal anisotropy in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV

The measurement of J/ψ azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured J/ψ elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/ψ particles with relatively large transverse momenta are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.

Observation of an energy-dependent difference in elliptic flow between particles and antiparticles in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Elliptic flow (v(2)) values for identified particles at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions, measured by the STAR experiment in the beam energy scan at RHIC at sqrt[s(NN)] = 7.7-62.4 GeV, are presented. A beam-energy-dependent difference of the values of v(2) between particles and corresponding antiparticles was observed. The difference increases with decreasing beam energy and is larger for baryons compared to mesons. This implies that, at lower energies, particles and antiparticles are not consistent with the universal number-of-constituent-quark scaling of v(2) that was observed at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV.

Molecular analysis of intestinal bacterial microbiota of broiler chickens fed diets containing fermented cottonseed meal

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary inclusion of fermented cottonseed meal (FCM) on the ileal and cecal bacterial microbiota of broiler chickens. A total of 300 newborn yellow-feathered broiler chickens were randomly divided into 2 treatments with 3 replicates each (50 birds per replicate): control and 80 g/kg of FCM group. The feeding trial lasted for 42 d. Ileal and cecal digesta samples were collected from 8 chicks per replicate at 21 and 42 d of age to determine the composition of bacterial microbiota using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, cloning, sequencing, and real-time quantitative PCR analysis. The results demonstrated that the microbial composition in the ileum and cecum were considerably affected by the diet. The similarity dendrogram of banding profiles showed a more rapid stabilization of intestinal bacterial microbiota in broilers fed diets supplemented with FCM, compared with that of the birds fed the control diet. No significant difference was observed in total number of bands and Shannon-Weaver index, indicating that FCM had no effects on bacterial diversity. However, enumeration of bacteria in the ileal and cecal contents by quantitative PCR showed an increased (P < 0.05) population of lactobacilli, as well as a decreased (P < 0.05) Escherichia coli number by the dietary inclusion of FCM. In summary, dietary inclusion of FCM did not affect the intestinal microbial diversity but shifted intestinal microbiota, with a more homogenous population and an increased colonization of lactobacilli. The results also support the concept that dietary FCM inclusion could promote the beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract.

Directed flow of identified particles in Au+Au collisions at √[SNN]=200 GeV at RHIC

STAR's measurements of directed flow (v1) around midrapidity for π±, K±, KS0, p, and p[over ¯] in Au+Au collisions at √[sNN]=200  GeV are presented. A negative v1(y) slope is observed for most of produced particles (π±, K±, KS0, and p[over ¯]). In 5%-30% central collisions, a sizable difference is present between the v1(y) slope of protons and antiprotons, with the former being consistent with zero within errors. The v1 excitation function is presented. Comparisons to model calculations (RQMD, UrQMD, AMPT, QGSM with parton recombination, and a hydrodynamics model with a tilted source) are made. For those models which have calculations of v1 for both pions and protons, none of them can describe v1(y) for pions and protons simultaneously. The hydrodynamics model with a tilted source as currently implemented cannot explain the centrality dependence of the difference between the v1(y) slopes of protons and antiprotons.

Relative contribution of tissue oedema and the presence of an A2 pulley to resistance to flexor tendon movement: an in vitro and in vivo study

Increases in the resistance to tendon during movement may lead to rupture or gapping of the repaired tendon. The relative contribution of these factors-tissue oedema, tendon oedema, and the intact A2 pulley-to resistance to tendon gliding is unclear. In in vitro chicken models, we created oedema in subcutaneous tissue or tendon. The work of digital flexion (WOF) increased significantly after creation of oedema in those tissues. WOF decreased significantly after division of the A2 pulley. Preservation of the integrity of the A2 pulley significantly increased WOF at post-operative weeks 1 and 2 in the in vivo chicken model; increases in WOF were greater than those due to the presence of oedematous subcutaneous tissue. Pulley division at the time of surgery reduced WOF more drastically than the removal of volar subcutaneous tissue. Presence of an intact A2 pulley adds greater resistance to the movement of the repaired flexor tendon than volar oedematous subcutaneous tissue.

Risk Factors of Acute ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients without Chest Pain

Introduction

To identify factors associated with ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients who had no chest pain, and to improve recognition of STEMI patients without presentation of chest pain in the emergency department (ED).

Method

Clinical characteristics and presentations were recorded in patients diagnosed with STEMI in the ED in a retrospective study of patients treated from 2006 to 2009. Patients with and without chest pain were compared according to clinical features.

Results

Among 260 STEMI patients, 12.7% of patients had no chest pain presentation in the ED. Syncope, epigastric pain, and dyspnea accounted for more than 60% of symptoms in STEMI patients without chest pain. Diabetes mellitus (DM), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and old age were risk factors for STEMI patients without chest pain.

Conclusions

DM, CVA, and elderly patients are more likely to be without chest pain when STEMI occurred.

Air embolism complicating computed tomography-guided core needle biopsy of the lung

Computed tomography-guided transthoracic lung biopsy is a common clinical procedure for the diagnosis of a broad range of pulmonary pathological conditions. Mild self-limiting pneumothorax and haemoptysis are common complications of this procedure. Air embolism is a potentially life-threatening but extremely rare complication. We report a case of an air embolism in the left ventricle of the heart that developed after a computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle biopsy of the lung. The patient did not exhibit cardiac or cerebral symptoms after conservative treatment. The patient underwent a successful left thoracotomy with a lobectomy of the left lower lobe of the lung 5 days after the biopsy and recovered uneventfully.

Identified hadron compositions in p+p and Au+Au collisions at high transverse momenta at √S(NN)=200 GeV

We report transverse momentum (p(T)≤15  GeV/c) spectra of π(±), K(±), p, p[over ¯], K(S)(0), and ρ(0) at midrapidity in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √S(NN)=200  GeV. Perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with π(±) spectra in p+p collisions but do not reproduce K and p(p[over ¯]) spectra. The observed decreasing antiparticle-to-particle ratios with increasing p(T) provide experimental evidence for varying quark and gluon jet contributions to high-p(T) hadron yields. The relative hadron abundances in Au+Au at p(T)≳8  GeV/c are measured to be similar to the p+p results, despite the expected Casimir effect for parton energy loss.

Strangeness enhancement in Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisions at √S(NN)=200 GeV

We report new STAR measurements of midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0), Ξ(-), Ξ[over ¯](+), Ω(-), Ω[over ¯](+) particles in Cu+Cu collisions at √S(NN)==200  GeV, and midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0) particles in Au+Au at √S(NN)==200  GeV. We show that, at a given number of participating nucleons, the production of strange hadrons is higher in Cu+Cu collisions than in Au+Au collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. We find that aspects of the enhancement factors for all particles can be described by a parametrization based on the fraction of participants that undergo multiple collisions.

A study of the anatomy and repair strengths of porcine flexor and extensor tendons: are they appropriate experimental models?

Although both porcine flexor and extensor tendons have been used in tendon repair research, no studies have specifically studied the anatomical differences and repair strengths in both types of tendons. We used 12 pig trotters to observe the anatomy of these tendons and compared the 2 mm gap and ultimate strengths of flexor and extensor tendons. There were four annular (A1, A2, A3, and A4) pulleys and one oblique pulley, which form a fibro-osseous tunnel for the flexor tendons, but the anatomy of the porcine extensor tendons was markedly different from the human flexor or extensor tendons. The diameter of flexor tendons was significantly greater than that of the extensors. The 2 mm gap and ultimate strengths of the flexor tendon with either two-strand or four-strand repairs were significantly greater than those of the extensor tendon. We conclude that the porcine flexor tendon systems are similar to those in the human, but the extensor tendons are not similar to either the flexor or extensor tendons in humans. Flexor and extensor tendons have different repair strengths which should be taken into account when interpreting findings from investigations using these tendons.

How much does a Pennington lock add to strength of a tendon repair?

Pennington advocated adding locking components to the Kessler-type repair to increase the repair strength, but did not actually test the repairs with this lock. Subsequent investigators have extensively cited that a Pennington lock is beneficial to the gain of repair strength. Thirty-three tendons were used to determine the exact strength differences between two grasping Kessler repairs and a Kessler repair with Pennington locks complemented with running peripheral suture. Two types of grasping repairs only had slightly lower resistance to gap formation compared with the repair with Pennington locks, and their ultimate strengths were not significantly different. We also compared the strength of four-strand Kessler repair with and without Pennington locks using 20 tendons, and found no difference in either gapping or ultimate strength. We conclude that a Pennington lock adds only a little to the capacity to gap resistance of a repair, but does not increase the ultimate strength.

Measurement of the parity-violating longitudinal single-spin asymmetry for W± boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity decay positrons and electrons from W+ and W- boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured asymmetries, A(L)(W+) = -0.27 ± 0.10(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.03(norm.) and A(L)(W-) = 0.14 ± 0.19(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.01(norm.), are consistent with theory predictions, which are large and of opposite sign. These predictions are based on polarized quark and antiquark distribution functions constrained by polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.

Biomechanical comparisons of four-strand tendon repairs with double-stranded sutures: effects of different locks and suture geometry

Multi-strand repairs are often used in flexor tendon surgery. We evaluated the strength of four four-strand tendon repairs with different locks and suture geometry. Forty-eight pig flexor tendons were repaired with the following methods: a cross-lock four-strand repair; a U-shaped repair with circle-locks; a modified Kessler repair with Pennington locks (with longitudinal sutures located more centrally; and another modified Kessler (with longitudinal sutures located more laterally). The tendons were loaded to complete failure of the repairs. The two Kessler repairs showed a 35% lower 2 mm gap force, and 15% lower ultimate strength compared with the other two repairs; the differences were of statistical significance. The failure pattern was breakage of sutures in almost all tendons. These four-strand repairs differed in gapping and ultimate strengths. The Kessler-type repairs with different geometry in the longitudinal sutures produced identical strengths. The Kessler-type repairs with Pennington locks were weaker than the two repairs with either cross-locks or circle-locks.

+Antisense oligonucleotide targeting survivin inhibits growth by inducing apoptosis in human osteosarcoma cells MG-63

Survivin may play an important role in the development of osteosarcoma. In this study, we chose osteosarcoma cell line MG-63, which highly expressed survivin, to observe the effects of antisense oligonucleotide targeting survivin on the apoptosis induction and proliferation inhibition. It was shown in our results that the apoptosis rate and the proliferation inhibition rate increased significantly in survivin-positive cells MG-63 by using MTT and flow cytometry methods. We found that the growth inhibition rate and apoptosis rate were changed in a dose-dependent way. When the concentration of antisurvivin oligonucleotide was 600 nM, the effects reached the peak. RT-PCR and western-blot methods were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression of survivin in MG-63. We observed that the mRNA and protein expression of survivin reduced after transfected with antisurvivin oligonucleotides at the concentration of 200 nM, 400 nM and 600 nM. At the same time, we found that the mRNA and protein expression of Fas were up-regulated with the concentration of antisurvivin oligonucleotides from 200 nM to 600 nM. It was negative associated with the expression change of survivin. These data suggested that survivin should play an important role in the development of osteosarcoma and the survivin blockaded by using antisurvivin oligonucleotide could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis of osteosarcoma by decreasing the expression of survivin and activate the Fas-mediated apoptosis. Down-regulation of survivin by antisense oligonucleotide might be an effective strategy to the treatment of osteosarcoma and might improve the therapeutic effect.

Measurement of the bottom quark contribution to nonphotonic electron production in p + p collisions at √s=200 GeV

The contribution of B meson decays to nonphotonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons, in p + p collisions at √s=200  GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between nonphotonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted B decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT≥5  GeV/c. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from B and D meson decays. The result indicates that B meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pT.

Higher moments of net proton multiplicity distributions at RHIC

We report the first measurements of the kurtosis (κ), skewness (S), and variance (σ2) of net-proton multiplicity (Np-Np) distributions at midrapidity for Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=19.6, 62.4, and 200 GeV corresponding to baryon chemical potentials (μB) between 200 and 20 MeV. Our measurements of the products κσ2 and Sσ, which can be related to theoretical calculations sensitive to baryon number susceptibilities and long-range correlations, are constant as functions of collision centrality. We compare these products with results from lattice QCD and various models without a critical point and study the square root of s(NN) dependence of κσ2. From the measurements at the three beam energies, we find no evidence for a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for μB below 200 MeV.

100 GHz ultra-wideband (UWB) fiber-to-the-antenna (FTTA) system for in-building and in-home networks

Fiber-to-the-antenna (FTTA) system can be a cost-effective technique for distributing high frequency signals from the head-end office to a number of remote antenna units via passive optical splitter and propagating through low-loss and low-cost optical fibers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an optical ultra-wideband (UWB) - impulse radio (IR) FTTA system for in-building and in-home applications. The optical UWB-IR wireless link is operated in the W-band (75 GHz - 110 GHz) using our developed near-ballistic unitraveling-carrier photodiode based photonic transmitter (PT) and a 10 GHz mode-locked laser. 2.5 Gb/s UWB-IR FTTA systems with 1,024 high split-ratio and transmission over 300 m optical fiber are demonstrated using direct PT modulation.

A Phytoplasma Associated with an Outbreak of an Unusual Disease of Chrysanthemum in China in 2008

In August of 2008, a disease of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema morifolium (Ramat.) Tzvel) caused losses of 70 to 80% in one of the largest chrysanthemum gardens in Yangling, Shanxi Province, China. Chrysanthemum plants in nearby areas also were affected to various degrees. Symptoms included flattened stems, shortening of internodes, yellowing of leaf margins, root death, and dwarfing of plants. Affected plants eventually collapsed. On the basis of these symptoms, a phytoplasma was suspected. Total nucleic acids were extracted from 0.5 g of phloem tissue from stems of eight symptomatic and eight asymptomatic plants by the cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) method (1). To amplify phytoplasma DNA, primer pairs R16mF2/R16mR1, followed by R16F2n/R16R1 (2), were used in a nested PCR. A final amplicon product (1.2 kb) was obtained from all symptomatic plants but not from asymptomatic ones. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses of R16F2n/R16R1 amplicons with MseI, AluI, HhaI, HaeIII, KpnI, RsaI, and HpaII endonucleases indicated that all symptomatic plants, but none of the asymptomatic plants, contained a phytoplasma strain of group 16SrI, subgroup B (3). A search of rDNA sequences in GenBank revealed a similarity (>99%) to aster yellow phytoplasma, 16SrI group, thereby confirming strain identity based on RFLP analysis. These results indicate the disease of chrysanthemum is associated with a phytoplasma related to the aster yellow phytoplasma group. Sequences were deposited in GenBank (Accession No. FJ543467).
