Abstract
To explore the association between serum-related indicators (levels of inflammatory cytokines and essential trace elements) and miscarriage risk among infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques (ART) on the 14th day after embryo transfer, and to develop and establish a multivariable algorithm model that might predict pregnancy outcome. According to a nested case-control study design, a total of 100 miscarriage cases and 100 live birth controls were included in this study, and women in both groups were infertile and have underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF). Pregnancy tests were performed and serum levels of five essential trace elements (vanadium (V), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and molybdenum (Mo)) and five inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) of the participants were measured on the 14th day after embryo transfer. The serum levels of five inflammatory cytokines were determined by multiple magnetic bead enzyme immunity analyzer; and the serum concentrations of five elements were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP ‒ MS). The logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between these serum indices and miscarriage risk among women undergoing ART, and a predictive model of pregnancy outcome based on these indices was established. The levels of IL-10, IL-1β and TNF-α of infertile women in the live birth group were significantly higher than those in the miscarriage group (p = 0.009, p < 0.001, p = 0.006), and the levels of V, Cu, Zn and Se of infertile women in the live birth group were also significantly higher than those in the miscarriage group (all p < 0.001). Through logistic regression analyses, we found that serum levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, V, Cu, Zn and Se were significantly and negatively associated with miscarriage risk. Different combination prediction models were generated according to the results of logistic regression analyses, and the combination of IL-1β, Cu and Zn had the best prediction performance. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.776, the sensitivity of the model was 60% and the specificity was 84%. In conclusion, the serum-related indicators of women undergoing ART on the 14th day after embryo transfer, including the inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α and the essential trace metal elements such as V, Cu, Zn and Se, were negatively correlated with miscarriage risk. A multivariate algorithm model to predict pregnancy outcome among women undergoing ART was established, which showed that IL-1β, Cu and Zn might synergistically predict pregnancy outcome.

Abstract
PURPOSE Epidemiologic evidence for the association between methyl-donor nutrient intake and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk remains inconclusive. We aimed to examine the relationship between intake of vitamins of the B group, methionine, total choline and betaine and CRC risk, in a population from the CRC screening programme in the Basque Country. DESIGN This observational study included 308 patients with CRC and 308 age- and sex-matched subjects as controls. During recruitment, dietary, anthropometric, lifestyle, socioeconomic, demographic, and health status information was collected. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) for CRC risk. RESULTS The adjusted ORs for CRC risk decreased with higher intakes of choline and betaine (p < 0.05). After further adjustment for folate, high intake of choline and betaine remained associated with a reduced CRC risk (adjusted model for choline, OR third tertile vs first tertile = 0.45, 95% CI 0.26-0.80, p = 0.006; for betaine, OR third tertile vs first tertile = 0.27, 95% CI 0.16-0.47, p < 0.001). Regarding the other nutrients, our findings indicated a non-significant decrease in CRC risk with the high level of intake. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that choline and betaine intake influence CRC risk in the studied population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In France, rural general practitioner (GP) numbers could reduce by 20% between 2006 and 2030 if no measures are taken to address primary care access difficulties. In countries such as Australia, the USA and Canada, intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with GPs practising in rural areas include rural upbringing and rural training placements. However, the health systems and rural area definition differ between these countries and France making result extrapolation difficult. These factors must be studied in the context of the French heath system, to design strategies to improve rural GP recruitment and retention. This study aims to identify the intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with GPs practising in rural areas in France. METHODS This case-control study was conducted between May and September 2020. Included GPs practised in Brittany, France, and completed a self-administered questionnaire. The cases were rural GPs and controls were urban GPs. National references defined rural and urban areas. Comparisons between rural and urban groups were conducted using univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with practising in a rural area. RESULTS The study included 341 GPs, of which 146 were in the rural group and 195 in the urban group. Working as a rural GP was significantly associated with having a rural upbringing (OR = 2.35; 95% CI [1.07-5.15]; p = 0.032), completing at least one undergraduate general medicine training placement in a rural area (OR = 3.44; 95% CI [1.18-9.98]; p < 0.023), and having worked as a locum in a rural area for at least three months (OR = 3.76; 95% CI [2.28-6.18]; p < 0.001). Choosing to work in a rural area was also associated with the place of residence at the end of postgraduate training (OR = 5.13; 95% CI [1.38-19.06]; p = 0.015) and with the spouse or partner having a rural upbringing (OR = 2.36; 95% CI [1.12-4.96]; p = 0.023) or working in a rural area (OR = 5.29; 95% CI [2,02-13.87]; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS French rural GPs were more likely to have grown up, trained, or worked as a locum in a rural area. Strategies to improve rural GP retention and recruitment in France could therefore include making rural areas a more attractive place to live and work, encouraging rural locum placements and compulsory rural training, and possibly enrolling more medical students with a rural background.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Manganese (Mn) deficiency and intoxication may affect nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) risk differently. We aimed to explore the association between blood Mn and NAFLD in an area with high Mn exposure in drinking water. METHODS We conducted a case-control study among 1407 patients with NAFLD and 1774 sex- and age-matched healthy controls in a physical examination population in Zhoushan hospital, Zhejiang province in China. We used the restricted cubic splines method to investigate the dose-response relationship. Logistic regression models were applied to determine the risk of NAFLD, and severity of NAFLD. RESULTS The blood Mn concentration was higher in the NAFLD group than in the control group in women (16.1 ± 6.2 μg/L vs. 14.7 ± 6.4 μg/L, P = 0.022) and men (14.5 ± 6.3 μg/L vs. 13.6 ± 6.8 μg/L, P < 0.001). We found an inverted L shape relationship between blood Mn and NAFLD in both women and men. Compared to the lowest quartile, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of NAFLD for the highest quartile group was 1.646(1.222,2.217), 1.494(1.082,2.061), and 3.146(1.285,7.701) for the total population, men, and women. The positive relationship was only observed in those with fibrosis-4 score < 1.30 and normal alanine transaminase. Stratified analysis showed an interaction between smoking (P = 0.073), alcohol drinking (P = 0.013), and Mn, with a more prominent effect on the NAFLD in the never-smokers (OR = 2.153, 95% CI 1.408-3.290) and drinkers (OR = 2.596, 95% CI 1.608-4.191). CONCLUSION Higher blood Mn is associated with an elevated NAFLD risk in the high Mn exposure areas, especially in nonsmokers and drinkers. Further studies are needed to verify this result in the areas with high Mn exposure.

Abstract
Through multiple different pathways, the environmental multiple metals make their ways to the human bodies, where they induce different levels of the oxidative stress response. This study further investigated the impact of multiple-metal exposure on the risk of developing proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). We designed a case-control study with type 2 diabetic patients (T2D), in which the case group was the proliferative diabetic retinopathy group (PDR group), while the control group was the non-diabetic retinopathy group (NDR group). Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) were used to detect the metal levels in our participants' urine samples. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression approach was used to include these representative trace elements in a multiple exposure model. Following that, logistic regression models and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to describe the effect of different elements and also analyze their combined effect. In the single-element model, we discovered that lithium (Li), cadmium (Cd), and strontium (Sr) were all positively related to PDR. The multiple-exposure model revealed a positive relationship between Li and PDR risk, with a maximum quartile OR of 2.80 (95% CI: 1.10-7.16). The BKMR model also revealed that selenium (Se) might act as a protective agent, whereas magnesium (Mg), Li, and Cd may raise the risk of PDR. In conclusion, our study not only revealed an association between exposure to multiple metals and PDR risk but it also implied that urine samples might be a useful tool to assess PDR risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Cambodia, stillbirths and their underlying factors have not been systematically studied. This study aimed to assess the proportion and trends in stillbirths between 2017 and 2020 in a large maternity referral hospital in the country and identify their key determinants to inform future prevention efforts. METHODS This was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis with a nested case-control study of women giving birth at the National Maternal and Child Health Centre (NMCHC) in Phnom Penh, 2017-2020. We calculated percentages of singleton births at ≥ 22 weeks' gestation resulting in stillbirth and annual stillbirth rates by timing: intrapartum (fresh) or antepartum (macerated). Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore factors associated with stillbirth, where cases were all women who gave birth to a singleton stillborn baby in the 4-year period. One singleton live birth immediately following each case served as an unmatched control. Multiple imputation was used to handle missing data for gestational age. RESULTS Between 2017 and 2020, 3.2% of singleton births ended in stillbirth (938/29,742). The stillbirth rate increased from 24.8 per 1000 births in 2017 to 38.1 per 1000 births in 2020, largely due to an increase in intrapartum stillbirth rates which rose from 18.8 to 27.4 per 1000 births in the same period. The case-control study included 938 cases (stillbirth) and 938 controls (livebirths). Factors independently associated with stillbirth were maternal age ≥ 35 years compared to < 20 years (aOR: 1.82, 95%CI: 1.39, 2.38), extreme (aOR: 3.29, 95%CI: 2.37, 4.55) or moderate (aOR: 2.45, 95%CI: 1.74, 3.46) prematurity compared with full term, and small-for-gestational age (SGA) (aOR: 2.32, 1.71, 3.14) compared to average size-for-age. Breech/transverse births had nearly four times greater odds of stillbirth (aOR: 3.84, 95%CI: 2.78, 5.29), while caesarean section reduced the odds by half compared with vaginal birth (aOR: 0.50, 95%CI: 0.39, 0.64). A history of abnormal vaginal discharge increased odds of stillbirth (aOR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.11, 1.81) as did a history of stillbirth (aOR: 3.08, 95%CI: 1.5, 6.5). CONCLUSIONS Stillbirth prevention in this maternity referral hospital in Cambodia requires strengthening preterm birth detection and management of SGA, intrapartum care, monitoring women with stillbirth history, management of breech births, and further investigation of high-risk referral cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of long-term lithium treatment on weight gain has been a controversial topic with conflicting evidence. We aim to assess reporting of weight gain associated with lithium and other mood stabilizers compared to lamotrigine which is considered free of metabolic adverse drug reactions (ADRs). METHODS We conducted a case/non-case pharmacovigilance study using data from the AMSP project (German: "Arzneimittelsicherheit in der Psychiatrie"; i.e., Drug Safety in Psychiatry), which collects data on ADRs from patients treated in psychiatric hospitals in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We performed a disproportionality analysis of reports of weight gain (> 10% of baseline body weight) calculating reporting odds ratio (ROR). We compared aripiprazole, carbamazepine, lithium, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, and valproate to lamotrigine. Additional analyses related to different mood stabilizers as reference medication were performed. We also assessed sex and age distributions of weight-gain reports. RESULTS We identified a total of 527 cases of severe drug-induced weight gain representing 7.4% of all severe ADRs. The ROR for lithium was 2.1 (95%CI 0.9-5.1, p > 0.05), which did not reach statistical significance. Statistically significant disproportionate reporting of weight gain was reported for olanzapine (ROR: 11.5, 95%CI 4.7-28.3, p < 0.001), quetiapine (ROR: 3.4, 95%CI 1.3-8.4, p < 0.01), and valproate (ROR: 2.4, 95%CI 1.1-5.0, p = 0.03) compared to lamotrigine. Severe weight gain was more prevalent in non-elderly (< 65 years) than in elderly patients, with an ROR of 7.6 (p < 0.01) in those treated with lithium, and an ROR of 14.7 (p < 0.01) in those not treated with lithium. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that lithium is associated with more reports of severe weight gain than lamotrigine, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. However, lithium use led to fewer reports of severe weight gain than some alternative drugs for long-term medication (olanzapine, quetiapine, and valproate), which is consistent with recent studies. Monitoring of weight gain and metabolic parameters remains essential with lithium and its alternatives.

Abstract
Matching by a confounder in a case-control study nearly always produces a control-selection bias that mixes with the confounding to produce a net bias. Previous theoretical work has assumed that control for a single confounder, the matching factor, is sufficient to remove all the confounding and that the confounder-exposure, confounder-outcome and exposure-outcome associations are monotonic. Under these conditions: (a) The net bias is toward the null if the exposure affects the outcome and nil if it does not. (b) If the confounding is away from the null, the selection bias is toward the null. (c) If the confounding is toward the null, the selection bias can be in any direction or even nil. If more than one confounder needs to be controlled to remove all the confounding, the net bias from matching by one of them can be away from the null, whether the exposure affects the outcome or not. An influential heuristic, that matching controls to cases by a variable associated with exposure always brings the marginal exposure distributions of the case and control groups closer together, turns out to be faulty. The implications of matching by confounders in case-control studies are less straightforward than previously thought. Suggestions are offered for advancing the methodologic literature on this topic.

Abstract
Switzerland has one of the highest annual Legionnaires' disease (LD) notification rates in Europe (7.8 cases/100,000 population in 2021). The main sources of infection and the cause for this high rate remain largely unknown. This hampers the implementation of targeted Legionella spp. control efforts. The SwissLEGIO national case-control and molecular source attribution study investigates risk factors and infection sources for community-acquired LD in Switzerland. Over the duration of one year, the study is recruiting 205 newly diagnosed LD patients through a network of 20 university and cantonal hospitals. Healthy controls matched for age, sex, and residence at district level are recruited from the general population. Risk factors for LD are assessed in questionnaire-based interviews. Clinical and environmental Legionella spp. isolates are compared using whole genome sequencing (WGS). Direct comparison of sero- and sequence types (ST), core genome multilocus sequencing types (cgMLST), and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between clinical and environmental isolates are used to investigate the infection sources and the prevalence and virulence of different Legionella spp. strains detected across Switzerland. The SwissLEGIO study innovates in combining case-control and molecular typing approaches for source attribution on a national level outside an outbreak setting. The study provides a unique platform for national Legionellosis and Legionella research and is conducted in an inter- and transdisciplinary, co-production approach involving various national governmental and national research stakeholders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) comprises 10-15% of all lung cancer cases and is the most aggressive histological type. Survival is poor and the molecular landscape of this disease is extraordinarily complex. The objective of this paper was to perform a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) of this disease using a case-control study specifically designed for small cell lung cancer (SCLC). METHODS Incident cases were consecutively recruited from 8 hospitals from different regions of Spain. Controls were recruited from the same hospitals using a frequency sampling based on age and sex distribution of cases. Biological samples were obtained along with detailed information on cases and controls lifestyle, including tobacco and radon exposure. RESULTS We included 271 SCLC cases and 557 controls. We found evidence (p-values<10-5) of an association in the complete dataset for several loci, while MAP4 showed a significant association in the gene-based analysis. Pathway analysis suggested that ATR, ATRIP, MCM4, MCM5, ORC4, RPA3 and CDC25A genes have a role on the onset of SCLC. CONCLUSION This study provides biological evidence for pathways related to SCLC, offering novel loci for further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysbiosis of the oral mycobiome has been linked to some diseases, including cancers. However, the role of oral fungal communities in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carcinogenesis has not previously been investigated. METHODS We characterized the oral salivary fungal mycobiome in 476 untreated incident NPC patients and 537 population-based controls using fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-2 sequencing. The relationship between oral fungal mycobiome and the risk of NPC was assessed through bioinformatic and biostatistical analyses. FINDINGS We found that lower fungal alpha diversity was associated with an increased odds of NPC [lower vs. higher: observed features (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 5.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.60-9.38); Simpson diversity (1.53, 1.03-2.29); Shannon diversity (2.03, 1.35-3.04)]. We also observed a significant difference in global fungal community patterns between cases and controls based on Bray-Curtis dissimilarity (P < 0.001). Carriage of oral fungal species, specifically, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida tropicalis, Lodderomyces elongisporus, Candida albicans, and Fusarium poae, was associated with significantly higher odds of NPC, with ORs ranging from 1.56 to 4.66. Individuals with both low fungal and low bacterial alpha diversity had a profoundly elevated risk of NPC. INTERPRETATION Our results suggest that dysbiosis in the oral mycobiome, characterized by a loss of fungal community diversity and overgrowth of several fungal organisms, is associated with a substantially increased risk of NPC. Abstract
Previous studies on the association between metals and dyslipidemia are not completely consistent. There are few studies investigating the relationship between mixed metal exposure and dyslipidemia as well as the effects of metals on dyslipidemia in community-dwelling elderly. To evaluate the correlations and interaction effect between the urinary concentrations of metals and the risk of dyslipidemia in community-dwelling elderly. We designed a case-control study to assess the correlation between urine metals and dyslipidemia in elderly people in the Yinchuan. The urinary levels of 13 metals, including calcium, vanadium, iron, cobalt, zinc, copper, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum, cadmium, tellurium, and thallium, were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the blood biochemical analyzer was used to measure the blood lipid levels of 3384 senior individuals from four different areas of Yinchuan city. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the correlation and dose-response relationship between urinary metals and the risk of dyslipidemia. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to select metals, and then weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was used to explore the weight of each metal in mixed metals. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to explore the interactions between metals on dyslipidemia risk. (1) After selection by LASSO regression, in the multi-metal model, compared with the lowest quartile, the adjusted ORs (95%CI) of the highest quartiles were 0.47 (0.37-0.60) for Fe, 1.43 (1.13-1.83) for Zn, 1.46 (1.11-1.92) for As, 0.59 (0.44-0.80) for Se, 1.53 (1.18-2.00) for Mo, and 1.36 (1.07-1.73) for Te. (2) In the WQS regression model, Fe and Mo accounted for the largest weight in the negative and positive effects of dyslipidemia, respectively. (3) In the BKMR model, there may be a positive interaction between Te and Se on dyslipidemia. Among the mixed metals, Fe, As, Se, Mo, and Te were associated with the prevalence of dyslipidemia, with Fe and Mo contributing the most. There may be certain interactions between Te and Se.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research on sarcopenia has primarily focused on single fields such as physiology or psychology. However, there is a lack of clear evidence to determine the influence of social factors on sarcopenia. Therefore, our aim was to explore the multidimensional factors that contribute to sarcopenia in older adults within the community. METHODS In this retrospective case-control study, we applied the diagnostic criteria from The Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 to categorize study subjects into control and case groups. Our aim was to examine the impact of physical, psychological, and social factors on community-dwelling older adults with sarcopenia across multiple dimensions. We utilized descriptive statistics, as well as simple and multivariate logistic regression analyses, to analyze the data. We compared the odds ratios (OR) of the factors between the two groups and ranked the importance of the influencing factors using the XGBoost algorithm in Python software. RESULTS Combined with multivariate analysis and XGBoost algorithm results, it can be seen that physical activity is the strongest predictor of sarcopenia [OR] = 0.922(95% CI 0.906-0.948), followed diabetes mellitus [OR] = 3.454(95% CI 1.007-11.854), older age [OR] = 1.112(95% CI 1.023-1.210), divorced or widowed [OR] = 19.148 (95% CI 4.233-86.607), malnutrition [OR] = 18.332(95% CI 5.500-61.099), and depressed [OR] = 7.037(95% CI 2.391-20.710). CONCLUSIONS Factors associated with the development of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults cover a multiplicity of physical, psychological, and social factors, physical activity, diabetes mellitus, age, marital status, nutrition, and depression were important factors that have an impact on sarcopenia. Abstract
PURPOSE Consumer-based activity trackers are used to measure and promote PA. We studied the accuracy of a wrist- and waist-worn activity tracker in cancer survivors and compared these results to a healthy age-matched control group. METHODS Twenty-two cancer survivors and 35 healthy subjects wore an activity tracker at the waist and at the wrist combined with a reference activity monitor at the waist (Dynaport Movemonitor). The devices were worn for 14 consecutive days. The mean daily step count from both activity trackers was compared with the reference activity monitor to investigate accuracy and agreement (paired t-test, intraclass correlation, Bland-Altman plots). To evaluate the accuracy as a coaching tool, day-by-day differences within patients were calculated. The Kendall correlation coefficient was used to test the consistency of ranking daily steps between the activity trackers and the reference activity monitor. RESULTS The wrist-worn wearable significantly overestimated the daily step count in the cancer group (mean ± SDΔ: + 1305 (2685) steps per day; p = 0.033) and in the healthy control group (mean ± SDΔ: + 1598 (2927) steps per day; p = 0.003). The waist-worn wearable underestimated the step count in both groups, although this was not statistically significant. As a coaching device, moderate (r = 0.642-0.670) and strong (r = 0.733-0.738) accuracy was found for the wrist- and waist-worn tracker, respectively, for detecting day-by-day variability in both populations. CONCLUSION Our results show that wrist-worn activity trackers significantly overestimate daily step count in both cancer survivors and healthy control subjects. Based on the accuracy, in particular, the waist-worn activity tracker could possibly be used as a coaching tool.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a complex spinal disease, with multiple genetic polymorphisms being related to its risk. Nevertheless, the role of LINC-PINT polymorphisms in LDH risk has remained unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between LINC-PINT polymorphisms and LDH risk. METHODS DNA was extracted from 504 LDH patients and 500 healthy controls. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in LINC-PINT were selected and genotyped using Agena MassARRAY. We used logistic regression analysis to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) under multiple genetic models to evaluate the association between LINC-PINT polymorphisms and LDH risk. Haploview 4.2 and SNPStats software were used to evaluate the linkage strength of SNPs and the correlation between haplotypes and LDH risk. The impact of SNP-SNP interactions on LDH risk was analyzed using multi-factor dimensionality reduction (MDR). RESULTS Results showed that rs157916 (G vs. A: OR = 1.23, FDR-p = 0.029) and rs7801029 (G vs. C: OR = 1.39, FDR-p = 0.006; GG vs. CC: OR = 2.34, FDR-p = 0.038; recessive: OR = 2.13, FDR-p = 0.045; additive: OR = 1.39, FDR-p = 0.030) were associated with an increased risk of LDH. Furthermore, LINC-PINT rs157916 and rs780129 were found to be significantly associated with LDH risk in males. The "GGG" haplotype was associated with increased LDH risk (OR = 1.41, FDR-p = 0.006). MDR analysis indicated that the interaction between rs7801029 and rs16873842 was associated with an increased risk of LDH (OR = 1.47, p = 0.004). Additionally, there were significant differences in C-reactive protein levels among different genotypes of rs157916 and rs780129 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study suggests that LINC-PINT gene polymorphisms (rs157916 and rs7801029) are considered risk factors for LDH in the Chinese Han population and provide a scientific basis for early screening, prevention, and diagnosis of LDH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine if CVD affects the mortality of women after a breast cancer diagnosis and population controls differently. METHODS The analysis included a total of 3,555 women, diagnosed with primary stage 1-3 breast cancer or in situ carcinoma between 2002 and 2005 and 7,334 controls breast cancer-free at recruitment, all aged 50-74 years, who were followed-up in a German breast cancer case-control study until June, 30 2020. Kaplan-Meier and cumulative incidence function were calculated for all-cause mortality and mortality from any cancer, stratified for case-control status and CVD, separately for women aged < 65 and ≥ 65 years. Cox regression and Fine-Gray subdistribution hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the association between case-control-status, CVD and mortality from all causes/any cancer. RESULTS The median follow-up was 16.1 years. In total, 1,172 cases (33.0%) and 1,401 initial controls (19.1%) died. CVD prevalence at recruitment was 15.2% in cases and controls. Cases with CVD had the highest and controls without CVD the lowest mortality during the entire observation period in both age groups (< 65 and ≥ 65 years). CVD was identified as a risk factor for all-cause mortality in both cases and controls aged < 65 years (HR 1.22, 95%CI 0.96-1.55 and HR 1.79, 95%CI 1.43-2.24) as well as at ages of ≥ 65 years (HR 1.44, 95%CI 1.20-1.73 and HR 1.59, 95%CI 1.37-1.83). A significant association of CVD and cancer mortality was found only for cases aged ≥ 65 years. CONCLUSION CVD was significantly associated with all-cause mortality of both cases and controls and CVD was identified as a risk factor for cancer mortality of cases aged ≥ 65 years at recruitment. Therefore, attention should be paid on monitoring and preventing CVD in breast cancer patients, especially in those diagnosed at older ages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Perforation is a common complication during endoscopic resection (ER) of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (gGISTs) associated with secondary infections, sepsis, hospitalization time and cost. However, the risk factors of perforation remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for perforation during ER of gGISTs. METHODS This retrospective case-control study included consecutive patients with gGISTs who underwent ER between June 2009 and November 2021 at the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the risk factors for perforation. Sensitivity analyses with propensity scoring (PS) were performed to evaluate the stability of the independent effects. RESULTS In total, 422 patients with gGISTs were included. The following factors were associated with perforation during ER: in the non-intraluminal growth patterns (all confounders adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 5.39, 95% CI 2.99-9.72, P < 0.001), in the gastric fundus (aOR 2.25, 95% CI 1.40-3.60, P = 0.007), sized ≥ 2 cm (aOR 1.70, 95% CI 1.04-2.77, P = 0.035), in the lesser curvature (aOR 0.12, 95% CI 0.05-0.27, P < 0.001), and in the gastric cardia (aOR 0.13, 95% CI 0.04-0.50, P = 0.003). The PS analysis confirmed the stable independent effects of these identified risk factors. CONCLUSIONS ERs of gGISTs in non-intraluminal growth patterns, in the gastric fundus, and with larger tumor size were independent risk factors for perforation. While tumors in the lesser curvature or gastric cardia were independent protective factor for perforation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES This study is designed to evaluate the potential influences of Mediterranean fever gene (MEFV) gene polymorphism on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a cohort of juvenile patients. A case-control study was performed on Iranian patients with a mixed ethnicity population. PATIENTS AND METHODS Genotypes of 50 juvenile cases, and 85 healthy controls were investigated for identifying M694V and R202Q polymorphism. Genotyping was done utilizing amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR) and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to detect M694V and R202Q mutations, respectively. MAIN FINDINGS Our study indicates significant differences in the alleles and genotypes frequencies of MEFV polymorphism between SLE patients and healthy controls (P<0.05). Also, an association was found between renal involvement (50% vs. 8.3%, P=0.000, OR=0.91, 95% CI=0.30-0.278) in juvenile SLE patients and M694V polymorphism incident; But there was no association with other clinical manifestations. PRINCIPAL CONCLUSION We found a significant association between R202Q and M694V polymorphism of the MEFV gene and susceptibility to SLE in the studied population; However, further studies on detailed characterization of these polymorphisms' impacts on the key elements responsible for SLE pathogenesis is of great importance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between appendicitis and the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS Using claims data from the 2003-2013 Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database, we selected 6054 patients with newly diagnosed SLE from 2007 to 2012 and 36,324 age-, sex- and year of SLE diagnosis date-matched (1:6) non-SLE controls. After controlling for potential confounders, a multivariable conditional logistic regression model was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association of appendicitis history with SLE. Sensitivity analyses were conducted using various definitions of appendicitis. Subgroup analyses were conducted to examine possible modification effects by age, gender, level of urbanization, income and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). RESULTS The average age of patients was 38 years old in both groups. The proportion of females was 86.5%. 75 (1.2%) of SLE cases and 205 (0.6%) of non-SLE controls had appendicitis history before the index date. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, appendicitis was associated with a higher risk of SLE (aOR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.34-2.52), and such association remained robust after variation of appendicitis definition. No significant modification effects were found for the association between appendicitis and SLE by age, gender, urbanization level, income and CCI. CONCLUSION This nationwide, population-based case-control study demonstrates an association between appendicitis and incident SLE. Lack of individual smoking status is a major limitation. Key Points • Appendicitis was significantly associated with an increased risk of SLE. • Such association remained robust using various definitions of appendicitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical efficacy of celiac plexus block (CPB) combined with 125I seeds implantation (ISI) for refractory epigastric pain from abdominal malignancies. METHODS The data of 81 patients with refractory epigastric pain [visual analog scale (VAS) score ≥ 4] from abdominal malignancies were collected in this retrospective case-control study. Group A (n = 40) was treated with CPB alone, while Group B (n = 41) underwent CPB combined with ISI. The primary study endpoints were the VAS score, quality of life (QoL), and local tumor control (LTC) rate. The secondary endpoints were complications, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS The VAS scores at week 2 (T2), week 4 (T4), week 8 (T8), and week 12 (T12) in both groups were significantly lower compared with the pretreatment values (all P < 0.01). VAS scores in Group B showed a sustained decrease, especially for "mild pain" and "moderate pain," while the VAS scores in Group A rebounded at T8 and T12 (both P < 0.01). The QoL in Group B improved significantly from T4 until T12, which better than that at T12 in Group A (all P < 0.01). The LTC rates at T8 were 35.0% and 92.7% in Groups A and B, respectively, with a significant difference (P < 0.01). Group B had a slightly lower complication rate and a slightly longer median PFS/OS than group A, but neither was statistically different (P = 0.09 and P = 0.99, respectively). CONCLUSION CPB combined with ISI performs more sustained pain relief (up to 12 weeks) compared to CPB alone, and ultimately improves the patients' QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In human genetics, heterozygote advantage (heterosis) has been detected in studies that focused on specific genes but not in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). For example, heterosis is believed to confer resistance to certain strains of malaria in patients heterozygous for the sickle-cell gene, haemoglobin S (HbS). Yet the power of allelic tests can be substantially diminished by heterosis. Since GWAS (and haplotype-associations) also utilize allelic tests, it is unclear to what degree GWAS could underachieve because heterosis is ignored. METHODS In this study, a two-step approach to genetic association testing in malaria studies in a GWAS setting that may enhance the power of the tests was proposed, by identifying the underlying genetic model first before applying the association tests. Generalized linear models for dominant, recessive, additive, and heterotic effects were fitted and model selection was performed. This was achieved via tests of significance using the MAX and allelic tests, noting the minimum p-values across all the models and the proportion of tests that a given genetic model was deemed the best. An example dataset, based on 17 SNPs, from a robust genetic association study and simulated genotype datasets, were used to illustrate the method. Case-control genotype data on malaria from Kenya and Gambia were used for validation. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Results showed that the allelic test returned some false negatives under the heterosis model, suggesting reduced power in testing genetic association. Disparities were observed for some chromosomes in the Kenyan and Gambian datasets, including the sex chromosomes. Thus, GWAS and haplotype associations should be treated with caution, unless the underlying genetic model had been determined.

Abstract
To investigate the association between pesticide use and breast cancer. A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Petrópolis city, Brazil. The study data were obtained through interviews, and the magnitude of the association between self-reported pesticide exposure and breast cancer was determined using unconditional logistic regression. A higher estimated risk for breast cancer was found in women exposed to pesticides for 10 or more years, where this association was not statistically significant after adjusting for potential confounders (OR = 1.40; 95% CI 0.85-2.49). A positive statistically significant association was found between breast cancer and higher educational level or previous use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), whereas having had 2 or more pregnancies to term proved a protective factor. Further studies elucidating the contribution of pesticide exposure to the development of breast cancer are needed, given that current findings in the literature are conflicting.

Abstract
The carcinogenicity of opium consumption was recently evaluated by a Working Group convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). We supplement the recent IARC evaluation by conducting an extended systematic review as well as a quantitative meta-analytic assessment of the role of opium consumption and risk for selected cancers, evaluating in detail various aspects of study quality on meta-analytic findings. We searched the published literature to identify all relevant studies on opium consumption and risk of selected cancers in humans through 31 October, 2022. Meta-relative risks (mRRs) and associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects models for studies of cancer of the urinary bladder, larynx, lung, oesophagus, pancreas, and stomach. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using the I2 statistic. We assessed study quality and conducted sensitivity analyses to evaluate the impact of potential reverse causation, protopathic bias, selection bias, information bias, and confounding. In total, 2 prospective cohort studies and 33 case-control studies were included. The overall pooled mRR estimated for 'ever or regular' versus 'never' use of opium ranged from 1.50 (95% CI 1.13-1.99, I2 = 0%, 6 studies) for oesophageal cancer to 7.97 (95% CI 4.79-13.3, I2 = 62%, 7 studies) for laryngeal cancer. Analyses of cumulative opium exposure suggested greater risk of cancer associated with higher opium consumption. Findings were robust in sensitivity analyses excluding studies prone to potential methodological sources of biases and confounding. Findings support an adverse association between opium consumption and cancers of the urinary bladder, larynx, lung, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The independent associations among childhood maltreatment (CM), parenting style, and school bullying in children and adolescents have not been adequately discussed. Epidemiological evidence of higher quality is still scarce. We intend to investigate this topic by using a case-control study design in a large sample of Chinese children and adolescents. METHOD Study participants were chosen from the Mental Health Survey for Children and Adolescents in Yunnan (MHSCAY), a mega ongoing cross-sectional study. The combined database from four study sites was used. The population-based case-control study was individually matched by study site, age, sex, race, left-behind status, whether a single child, and whether a boarding student. RESULTS Cases were observed to have a significantly higher prevalence of CM, higher scores for parental rejection and over-protection, and lower scores for parental emotional warmth. Multiple conditional logistic regression revealed that CM, especially emotional abuse (EA) and sexual abuse (SA), were associated with a prominently increased risk of school bullying involvement, with adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 2.28 (95 % CI: 2.03, 2.57) and 1.90 (95 % CI: 1.67, 2.17). Subsequent analysis further corroborated the robustness of EA-bullying and SA-bullying associations. Although parenting style generally showed a weaker association with school bullying, a higher level of parental rejection was related to an increased risk of bullying victimization. CONCLUSIONS Chinese children and adolescents who are victims of EA or SA, or experienced a higher level of parental rejection, are more vulnerable to school bullying. Targeted interventions should be designed and implemented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-established determinant of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Recently, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified several single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) significantly correlated with DM. The study aimed to explore the relationships of the top significant DM SNPs with carotid atherosclerosis (CA). METHODS We used a case-control design and randomly selected 309 cases and 439 controls with and without, respectively, carotid plaque (CP) from a community-based cohort. Eight recent GWAS on DM in East Asians reported hundreds of SNPs with genome-wide significance. The study used the top significant DM SNPs, with a p-value < 10-16, as the candidate genetic markers of CA. The independent effects of these DM SNPs on CA were assessed by multivariable logistic regression analyses to control the effects of conventional cardio-metabolic risk factors. RESULTS Multivariable analyses showed that, 9 SNPs, including rs4712524, rs1150777, rs10842993, rs2858980, rs9583907, rs1077476, rs7180016, rs4383154, and rs9937354, showed promising associations with the presence of carotid plaque (CP). Among them, rs9937354, rs10842993, rs7180016, and rs4383154 showed significantly independent effects. The means (SD) of the 9-locus genetic risk score (9-GRS) of CP-positive and -negative subjects were 9.19 (1.53) and 8.62 (1.63), respectively (p < 0.001). The corresponding values of 4-locus GRS (4-GRS) were 4.02 (0.81) and. 3.78 (0.92), respectively (p < 0.001). The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of having CP for per 1.0 increase in 9-GRS and 4-GRS were 1.30 (95% CI 1.18-1.44; p = 4.7 × 10-7) and 1.47 (95% CI 1.74-9.40; p = 6.1 × 10-5), respectively. The means of multi-locus GRSs of DM patients were similar to those of CP-positive subjects and higher than those of CP-negative or DM-negative subjects. CONCLUSIONS We identified 9 DM SNPs showing promising associations with CP. The multi-locus GRSs may be used as biomarkers for the identification and prediction of high-risks subjects for atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic diseases. Future studies on these specific SNPs and their associated genes may provide valuable information for the preventions of DM and atherosclerosis.
