Effect of Static Magnetic Field Assisted Thawing on Physicochemical Quality and Microstructure of Frozen Beef Tenderloin

Although freezing is the most common and widespread way to preserve food for a long time, the accumulation of microstructural damage caused by ice crystal formation during freezing and recrystallization phenomena during thawing tends to degrade the quality of the product. Thus, the side effects of the above processes should be avoided as much as possible. To evaluate the effect of different magnetic field strength assisted thawing (MAT) on beef quality, the indicators associated with quality of MAT-treated (10-50 Gs) samples and samples thawed without an external magnetic field were compared. Results indicated that the thawing time was reduced by 21.5-40% after applying MAT. Meat quality results demonstrated that at appropriate magnetic field strengths thawing loss, TBARS values, cooking loss, and shear force were significantly decreased. Moreover, by protecting the microstructure of the muscle, MAT significantly increased the a∗ value and protein content. MAT treatment significantly improved the thawing efficiency and quality of frozen beef, indicating its promising application in frozen meat thawing.

Magneto-Dielectric Effects in Polyurethane Sponge Modified with Carbonyl Iron for Applications in Low-Cost Magnetic Sensors

In this study, magnetizable polyurethane sponges (MSs) were obtained from commercial absorbent polyurethane sponges (PSs) doped with carbonyl iron microparticles (CIPs). Based on MSs, we manufactured cylindrical capacitors (CCs). The CCs were subjected to both a magnetic field and an alternating electric field, with a frequency of f=1 kHz. Using an RLC bridge, we measured the series electric capacitance, Cs, and the tangent of the loss angle, Ds. From the functions Cs=Cs(δ)CCs and Ds=Ds(δ)CCs, we extracted the components of the complex dielectric permittivity. It was found that the CIPs embedded in the MS matrix aggregated, leading to magneto-dielectric effects such as the enhancement of the complex dielectric permittivity components when applying the magnetic field as a principal effect and the enhancement of the electric capacitance and time constant of the capacitors as a secondary effect. The obtained results represent landmarks in the realization of low-cost magnetic field sensors, deformation and mechanical stress transducers in the robotics industry, etc.

Estimating the two graph dextran-stearic acid-spermine polymers based on iron oxide nanoparticles as carrier for gene delivery

Non-viral gene carriers have shown noticeable potential in gene delivery because of limited side effects, biocompatibility, simplicity, and the ability to take advantage of electrostatic interactions. However, the low transfection rate of non-viral vectors under physiological conditions is controversial. This study aimed to decrease the transfection time using a static magnetic field. We used self-assembled cationic polysaccharides based on dextran-stearic acid-spermine (DSASP) conjugates associated with Fe₃ O₄ superparamagnetic nanoparticles to investigate their potential as gene carriers to promote the target delivery. Our findings illustrate that the magnetic nanoparticles are spherical with a positive surface charge and exhibit superparamagnetic behavior. The DSASP-pDNA/Fe₃ O₄ complexes offered a strong pDNA condensation, protection against DNase degradation, and significant cell viability in HEK 293T cells. Our results demonstrated that although conjugation of stearic acid could play a role in transfection efficiency, DSASP magnetic carriers with more spermine derivatives showed better affinity between the amphiphilic polymer and the negatively charged cell membrane.

Synergistic Effect of Static Magnetic Field and Modified Atmosphere Packaging in Controlling Blown Pack Spoilage in Meatballs

This study aimed to compare the microbial diversity in meatballs with or without blown pack spoilage (BPS) to determine the cause of BPS and to assess the synergistic effect of static magnetic field (SMF) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to reduce the phenomenon of BPS. Results showed that the BPS group with a 2.26-fold larger volume and packaging containing 71.85% CO₂ had Klebsiella spp. (46.05%) and Escherichia spp. (39.96%) as the dominant bacteria, which was different from the spoilage group. The results of isolation and identification of strains from the BPS group and their inoculation test confirmed that Klebsiella pneumoniae was the major strain-inducing BPS in meatballs due to its pack-swelling ability. SMF (5 mT) treatment combined with MAP (40%CO₂ + 60%N₂), which did not influence the sensory quality of meatballs, had a significant synergistic effect on preventing the increase in pack volume. Compared with the control group, this synergistic treatment effectively delayed bacterial growth, drop in pH, and the increase of TBARS. The findings of this study will provide further guidance for meatball manufacturers to adopt effective strategies to reduce the BPS of meatballs.

Static magnetic field modulates olfactory ensheathing cell's morphology, division, and migration activities, a biophysical approach to regeneration

The moderate static magnetic fields (SMFs) have been used here as a non-invasive tool to study their manipulative effects on the olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) activity, growth, morphology, and migration in culture. The OECs are involved in the regeneration of primary olfactory sensory neurons and migration into the central nervous system to repair axons damaged by infection, injury, etc., that play a pivotal role in complementary regenerative medicine. Here, OECs were isolated from the olfactory bulb and cultured to confluence. An in vitro wound healing model was formed and exposed to either parallel (PaSMF) or perpendicular (PeSMF) SMF at intensities of 30, 50, and 70 mT, and cells' morphology, podia formation, proliferation, and migration were studied by time-lapse recording. The SMFs were not cytotoxic at the intensity and exposure time applied here. The exposure of cells to 70 mT PaSMF and PeSMF increased the formation of lamellipodia and filopodia, cell migration speed, and direction of the scratch forefront cells, significantly. Treatment of cells with 70 mT PaSMF and PeSMF increased cell divisions, while 30 mT PaSMF decreased it. SMF effects on OECs division, motility, migratory direction, and velocity indicate its effect on various aspects of cell physiology and signaling at atomic and molecular levels, and have a role in tissue regeneration that involves microtubules and actin filaments formation and rearrangements. Thus, the exposure of OECs with moderate SMF might be considered a promising noninvasive approach to remotely manipulate normal and stem cell activities for therapeutic regenerative purposes in various tissues including the central nervous system.

The Apoptotic Effect of Caffeic or Chlorogenic Acid on the C32 Cells That Have Simultaneously Been Exposed to a Static Magnetic Field

The induction of apoptosis is one of the main goals of the designed anti-cancer therapies. In recent years, increased attention has been paid to the physical factors such as magnetic fields and to the natural bioactive compounds and the possibilities using them in medicine. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-tumor effect of caffeic or chlorogenic acid in combination with a moderate-strength static magnetic field on C32 melanoma cells by assessing the effect of both factors on the apoptotic process. The apoptosis of the C32 cells was evaluated using a flow cytometry analysis. The expression of the apoptosis-associated genes was determined using the RT-qPCR technique. The caspase activity and the concentration of the oxidative damage markers were also measured. It was found that phenolic acids and a static magnetic field trigger the apoptosis of the C32 cells and also affect the expression of the genes encoding the apoptosis regulatory proteins. In conclusion, our study indicated that both of the phenolic acids and a static magnetic field can be used supportively in the treatment of melanoma and that caffeic acid is more pro-apoptotic than chlorogenic acid.

Electromagnetic Exposure of Personnel Involved in Cardiac MRI Examinations in 1.5T, 3T and 7T Scanners

(1) Background: It has been hypothesised that a significant increase in the use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), for example, when examining COVID-19 convalescents using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has an influence the exposure profiles of medical personnel to static magnetic fields (STmf). (2) Methods: Static exposure to STmf (SEmf) was recorded during activities that modelled performing CMR by radiographers. The motion-induced time variability of that exposure (TVEmf) was calculated from SEmf samples. The results were compared with: (i) labour law requirements; (ii) the distribution of vertigo perception probability near MRI magnets; and (iii) the exposure profile when actually performing a head MRI. (3) Results: The exposure profiles of personnel managing 42 CMR scans (modelled using medium (1.5T), high (3T) and ultrahigh (7T) field scanners) were significantly different than when managing a head MRI. The majority of SEmf and TVEmf samples (up to the 95th percentile) were at low vertigo perception probability (SEmf < 500 mT, TVEmf < 600 mT/s), but a small fraction were at medium/high levels; (4) Conclusion: Even under the “normal working conditions” defined for SEmf (STmf < 2T) by labour legislation (Directive 2013/35/EC), increased CMR usage increases vertigo-related hazards experienced by MRI personnel (a re-evaluation of electromagnetic safety hazards is suggested in the case of these or similar changes in work organisation).

Biopharmaceutical-Type Chinese Hamster Ovary Cell Cultivation Under Static Magnetic Field Exposure: A Study of Genotoxic Effect

The lack of a sufficient research base is the reason for the ongoing discussion regarding the genotoxic effect of magnetic field (MF) exposure on mammalian cell cultures. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) suspension-type cells, which are widely used for biopharmaceutical production, are potentially subjected to an increased MF when cultivated in bioreactors equipped with bottom-placed magnetically coupled stirring mechanisms. The main challenge for conducting research in this field remains the availability of a suitable experimental setup that generates an appropriate MF for the raised research question. In the present study, a simple and cost-effective experimental setup was developed that generated a static MF, similar to what has been modeled in large-scale bioreactors and, at the same time, was suitable for experimental cell cultivation in laboratory conditions. The measured maximum magnetic flux density to which the cells were exposed was 0.66 T. To assess the possible genotoxic effect, cells were continuously subcultivated in laboratory petri dishes for a period of 14 days, corresponding to a typical duration of a biopharmaceutical production process in a conventional fed-batch regime. The genotoxic effect was assessed using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay with fluorescent staining. Results showed that a 0.66-T static MF exposure had no significant long-term effect on cell viability and chromosomal damage but demonstrated a short-term effect on cell apoptosis. Significant increase in nuclear bud formation was observed. These findings may encourage other researchers in future studies investigating cellular responses to MF exposure and contribute relevant data for comparison.

Biomimetic Chaotic Sensor for Moderate Static Magnetic Field

The effects of a static magnetic field on systems with chaotic dynamical behavior have attracted little attention so far. Here, Chua’s electronic circuit with an inductor placed in a static uniform magnetic field operating in a chaotic double-scroll regime is studied experimentally. The effect of the magnetic field on the duty cycle factor and the spike count rate, with spikes defined by crossings between the scrolls of the double-scroll attractor, is described. A slow monotonic variation in the duty cycle factor and constant spike count rate is observed for magnetic field intensities up to the threshold, where both these metrics change severely; the dynamic trajectory remains on one scroll and spikes disappear. The dependence of the static magnetic field intensity on Chua’s circuit resistivity at the threshold is given. Two biomimetic magnetic chaotic sensors are proposed: one based on one Chua’s circuit and another that can have various transfer functions and is composed of several independent Chua’s circuits.

In Vitro Evaluation of Hyperthermia Magnetic Technique Indicating the Best Strategy for Internalization of Magnetic Nanoparticles Applied in Glioblastoma Tumor Cells

This in vitro study aims to evaluate the magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) technique and the best strategy for internalization of magnetic nanoparticles coated with aminosilane (SPIONAmine) in glioblastoma tumor cells. SPIONAmine of 50 and 100 nm were used for specific absorption rate (SAR) analysis, performing the MHT with intensities of 50, 150, and 300 Gauss and frequencies varying between 305 and 557 kHz. The internalization strategy was performed using 100, 200, and 300 µgFe/mL of SPIONAmine, with or without Poly-L-Lysine (PLL) and filter, and with or without static or dynamic magnet field. The cell viability was evaluated after determination of MHT best condition of SPIONAmine internalization. The maximum SAR values of SPIONAmine (50 nm) and SPIONAmine (100 nm) identified were 184.41 W/g and 337.83 W/g, respectively, using a frequency of 557 kHz and intensity of 300 Gauss (≈23.93 kA/m). The best internalization strategy was 100 µgFe/mL of SPIONAmine (100 nm) using PLL with filter and dynamic magnet field, submitted to MHT for 40 min at 44 °C. This condition displayed 70.0% decreased in cell viability by flow cytometry and 68.1% by BLI. We can conclude that our study is promising as an antitumor treatment, based on intra- and extracellular MHT effects. The optimization of the nanoparticles internalization process associated with their magnetic characteristics potentiates the extracellular acute and late intracellular effect of MHT achieving greater efficiency in the therapeutic process.

Static Magnetic Field (0.2-0.4 T) Stimulates the Self-Renewal Ability of Osteosarcoma Stem Cells Through Autophagic Degradation of Ferritin

Static magnetic field (SMF) can alter cell fate decisions in many ways. However, the effects of SMF on cancer stem cells (CSCs) are little-known. In this particular study, we evaluate the biological effect of moderate-intensity SMF on osteosarcoma stem cells (OSCs) and try to clarify the underlying mechanisms of action. First, we demonstrated that prolonged exposure to SMF induced the proliferation and tumorsphere formation in K7M2 and MG63 OSCs. Moreover, SMF promoted the release of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺ ) and provoked reactive oxygen species (ROS) in OSCs. Interestingly, SMF evidently triggered the autophagic degradation of ferritin, which is characterized by the activation of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) and nuclear receptor co-activator 4 (NCOA4), and downregulation of ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) in OSCs. Particularly, the colony-forming ability of K7M2 OSCs promoted by SMF was obviously abolished by using a small interfering RNA (siRNA) against NCOA4. Finally, treatment of the tumor-bearing mice with SMF did not affect the tumor volume or tumor mass, nor pulmonary metastasis of K7M2 OSCs, but the SMF-treated K7M2 OSCs caused a preference of pulmonary metastasis in a mouse model, which suggested that SMF might induce the metastatic characteristic of OSCs. Consequently, this paper demonstrates for the first time that the cumulative SMF exposure promoted the self-renewal ability of OSCs via autophagic degradation of ferritin, implying that ferritinophagy may be a potential molecular target for cancer. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Real-time motion and retrospective coil sensitivity correction for CEST using volumetric navigators (vNavs) at 7T

PURPOSE

To explore the impact of temporal motion-induced coil sensitivity changes on CEST-MRI at 7T and its correction using interleaved volumetric EPI navigators, which are applied for real-time motion correction.

METHODS

Five healthy volunteers were scanned via CEST. A 4-fold correction pipeline allowed the mitigation of (1) motion, (2) motion-induced coil sensitivity variations, ΔB1- , (3) motion-induced static magnetic field inhomogeneities, ΔB₀ , and (4) spatially varying transmit RF field fluctuations, ΔB1+ . Four CEST measurements were performed per session. For the first 2, motion correction was turned OFF and then ON in absence of voluntary motion, whereas in the other 2 controlled head rotations were performed. During post-processing ΔB1- was removed additionally for the motion-corrected cases, resulting in a total of 6 scenarios to be compared. In all cases, retrospective ∆B₀ and - ΔB1+ corrections were performed to compute artifact-free magnetization transfer ratio maps with asymmetric analysis (MTR_asym ).

RESULTS

Dynamic ΔB1- correction successfully mitigated signal deviations caused by head motion. In 2 frontal lobe regions of volunteer 4, induced relative signal errors of 10.9% and 3.9% were reduced to 1.1% and 1.0% after correction. In the right frontal lobe, the motion-corrected MTR_asym contrast deviated 0.92%, 1.21%, and 2.97% relative to the static case for Δω = 1, 2, 3 ± 0.25 ppm. The additional application of ΔB1- correction reduced these deviations to 0.10%, 0.14%, and 0.42%. The fully corrected MTR_asym values were highly consistent between measurements with and without intended head rotations.

CONCLUSION

Temporal ΔB1- cause significant CEST quantification bias. The presented correction pipeline including the proposed retrospective ΔB1- correction significantly reduced motion-related artifacts on CEST-MRI.

Effect of Static Magnetic Field on Monascus ruber M7 Based on Transcriptome Analysis

The effects of a static magnetic field (SMF) on Monascus ruber M7 (M. ruber M7) cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates under SMF treatment at different intensities (5, 10, and 30 mT) were investigated in this paper. The results revealed that, compared with the control (CK, no SMF treatment), the SMF at all tested intensities did not significantly influence the morphological characteristics of M. ruber M7, while the intracellular and extracellular Monascus pigments (MPs) and extracellular citrinin (CIT) of M. ruber M7 were increased at 10 and 30 mT SMF but there was no impact on the MPs and CIT at 5 mT SMF. The transcriptome data of M. ruber M7 cultured at 30 mT SMF on PDA for 3 and 7 d showed that the SMF could increase the transcriptional levels of some relative genes with the primary metabolism, including the carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism, especially in the early growing period (3 d). SMF could also affect the transcriptional levels of the related genes to the biosynthetic pathways of MPs, CIT, and ergosterol, and improve the transcription of the relative genes in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway of M. ruber M7. These findings provide insights into a comprehensive understanding of the effects of SMF on filamentous fungi.

Interference of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices by static electric and magnetic fields

Introduction: Electromagnetic interference (EMI) of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIED) can lead to malfunctions and pose a danger for implant carriers. The increased use of DC technologies, e.g. in electric mobility, creates more static fields representing an increasing hazard for implant carriers.Areas covered: A combination of approaches was used to determine thresholds for EMI by static fields. A literature search was conducted to identify relevant EMI mechanisms and to extract possible thresholds. The literature search revealed four interference mechanisms caused by static magnetic fields and none for static electric fields. Due to the scarce information on motion-induced EMI, numerical simulations were performed to obtain a threshold. The simulation results were evaluated using medical product standards and benchmark tests on commercially available CIEDs. The results show that motion-induced interference should not occur below the activation of the magnetic safety switch (reed switch or Hall-effect sensor, MSS).Expert opinion: The determined threshold for motion-induced EMI at 24.8 mT shows that the MSS activation is still the most relevant mechanism that can occur at 0.8 mT. Limit values for the general population do not protect implant carriers from EMI.

Magnetic fields as a potential therapy for diabetic wounds based on animal experiments and clinical trials

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder with various complications that poses a huge worldwide healthcare burden. Wounds in diabetes, especially diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), are difficult to manage, often leading to prolonged wound repair and even amputation. Wound management in people with diabetes is an extremely clinical and social concern. Nowadays, physical interventions gain much attention and have been widely developed in the fields of tissue regeneration and wound healing. Magnetic fields (MFs)-based devices are translated into clinical practice for the treatment of bone diseases and neurodegenerative disorder. This review attempts to give insight into the mechanisms and applications of MFs in wound care, especially in improving the healing outcomes of diabetic wounds. First, we discuss the pathological conditions associated with chronic diabetic wounds. Next, the mechanisms involved in MFs' effects on wounds are explored. At last, studies and reports regarding the effects of MFs on diabetic wounds from both animal experiments and clinical trials are reviewed. MFs exhibit great potential in promoting wound healing and have been practised in the management of diabetic wounds. Further studies on the exact mechanism of MFs on diabetic wounds and the development of suitable MF-based devices could lead to their increased applications into clinical practice.

A Static Magnetic Field Improves Iron Metabolism and Prevents High-Fat-Diet/Streptozocin-Induced Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disorder with high prevalence and severe complications that has recently been indicated to be treatable by a combined static magnetic field (SMF) and electric field. We systematically compared four types of SMFs and found that a downward SMF of ∼100 mT could effectively reduce the development of hyperglycemia, fatty liver, weight gain, and tissue injury in high-fat-diet (HFD)/streptozocin-induced T2D mice, but not the upward SMF. The downward SMF markedly restored the Bacteroidetes population and reversed the iron complex outer membrane receptor gene reduction in the mice gut microbiota, and reduced iron deposition in the pancreas. SMF also reduced the labile iron and reactive oxygen species level in pancreatic Min6 cells in vitro and prevented palmitate-induced Min6 cell number reduction. Therefore, this simple SMF setting could partially prevent HFD-induced T2D development and ameliorate related symptoms, which could provide a low-cost and non-invasive physical method to prevent and/or treat T2D in the future.

Biomagnetic Priming-Possible Strategy to Revitalize Old Mustard Seeds

Different priming methods were developed to improve seed germination and the early growth of seedlings. This study aimed to examine the combined effect of bacterial inoculation and static magnetic field on white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) germination. A plant growth-promoting bacterial strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D5 ARV was used for biopriming. The static magnetic field of 90 mT was applied for 5 and 15 min. Analyses of abscisic acid, chlorophyll, anthocyanins, flavonoids content, nitrogen balance index, and bacterial indole-3-acetic acid were used to explain observed effects. Bacterial inoculation improved seed germination, whereas exposure to 90 mT for 15 min suppressed germination. Such an unfavorable effect was neutralized when the treatment with the static magnetic field was combined with bacterial inoculation. The highest germination percentage was a result of synergistic action of B. amyloliquefaciens D5 ARV and 15 min long exposure to 90 mT, which induced an increase of 53.20% in the number of germinated seeds. The static magnetic field induced the increase of bacterial indole-3-acetic acid production threefold times. Biomagnetic priming caused a metabolic shift from primary to secondary metabolism in the white mustard seedlings. An adequate combination of biological priming and static magnetic field treatment can be successfully used in old seed revitalization and germination improvements. © 2021 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Effects of a Concentric Rare-Earth Magnet on Menstrual Cycle Pain: A Parallel Group Randomized Pilot Study

Background Based on prior reports of the use of magnets to treat pain, our goal was to determine if a concentric rare-earth alternating-pole magnet reduced period pain versus a sham-magnet.  Methods Participants were females (N=36, 18 to 35 years) who regularly experienced menstrual period pain ≥ six on the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS) of 0-10. Subjects were excluded if they took pain medication on the study day or had implanted pacemakers/metallic devices or secondary dysmenorrhea. Participants were randomized to wear a concentric neodymium-iron boron active-magnet (surface-field of 0.4 Tesla) or a sham magnet. The participant and investigator applying the device were blinded to the device used. The device was placed at the abdominal location of the reported greatest pain for 40-minutes, during which time the subject was able to conduct the normal activity. Pain scores were reported prior to device wearing and afterward. Participants with post-treatment NPRS ratings reduced by ≥ 35% from their pretreatment pain ratings were scored as having reduced pain; reductions < 35% were scored as no meaningful pain change. The threshold of 35% was chosen based on a survey of 10 women as to the level of pain reduction they viewed as meaningful to them. Of the 36 women in this pilot study, 19 wore an active-magnet and 17 wore a sham-magnet. Analyses were based on chi-square and Mann-Whitney statistical tests. Results  Pre-treatment pain scores (mean ± SD) were similar for both groups. Magnet-vs-sham pre-treatment scores were, respectively, 7.16 ± 0.85 vs. 6.94 ± 1.20 (p=0.330). Corresponding median values for the magnet (N=19) and sham (N=17) groups respectively were seven pre-treatment and four post-treatment vs. six pre-treatment and six post-treatment. Post-treatment scores for magnet treated subjects (4.16 ± 2.20) were significantly less (p=0.027) than for sham-treated (5.53 ± 1.50). Of the 19 who wore a magnet, 11 experienced meaningful pain-reduction, and eight did not. Of the 17 who wore a sham, three experienced meaningful pain-reduction, and 14 did not. Magnet and sham wearing responses were statistically significant via chi-square analysis (chi-square=6.12, p=0.013). Percentage reduction in pain score was 41.8% ± 31.1% for magnet-treated vs. 20.8% ± 16.1%, for sham-treated (p<0.05). Conclusions Results suggest that short-term wearing of the magnet herein investigated, produces a meaningful menstrual-pain reduction in some women. Thus, further expanded research seems warranted to determine if longer wearing times result in even greater pain reductions.

Polydopamine coating with static magnetic field promotes the osteogenic differentiation of human bone-derived mesenchymal stem cells on three-dimensional printed porous titanium scaffolds by upregulation of the BMP-Smads signaling pathway

Bone regeneration has always been a hot topic for orthopedic surgeons. The role of polydopamine coating in promoting bone regeneration has attracted much attention. Static magnetic field (SMF) is considered an effective and noninvasive treatment for enhancing bone regeneration. However, the effect of polydopamine combined with SMF on bone regeneration on scaffolds is not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and potential mechanism of polydopamine coating combined with SMF on bone regeneration in three-dimensional printed scaffolds. The polydopamine coating (pTi group) was applied onto porous Ti6Al4V scaffolds (Ti group). Surface characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy. The 100 mT SMF environment (pTi-SMF group) was established to enhance osteogenic differentiation of human bone-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) on polydopamine coating scaffolds. The cell viability and proliferation were significantly enhanced in the SMF environment (pTi-SMF vs. Ti: P=0.005). Improved morphology (pTi-SMF vs. pTi: P=0.024, pTi-SMF vs. Ti: P=0.001) and adhesion (Ti: x̅±s=1.585±0.324; pTi: x̅±s=2.164±0.314; pTi-SMF: x̅±s=4.634±0.247, P<0.001) of hBMSCs were observed in the pTi-SMF group. The high expression of osteogenesis-related RNA and protein (ALP: Ti, x̅±s=1.249±0.218; pTi, x̅±s=2.503±0.209; pTi-SMF, x̅±s=2.810±0.246. OCN: Ti, x̅±s=1.483±0.304; pTi, x̅±s=3.636±0.322; pTi-SMF, x̅±s=4.641±0.278. Runx2: Ti, x̅±s=1.372±0.227; pTi, x̅±s=3.054±0.229; pTi-SMF, x̅±s=3.914±0.253) was found in the pTi-SMF group (pTi-SMF vs. Ti: P<0.001). Proteomics was applied to explore the osteogenic mechanism of polydopamine coating combined with SMF. A total of 147 different proteins were identified between the pTi-SMF and Ti group. The osteogenic effect might be associated with the BMP-Smads signaling pathway (pTi-SMF vs. Ti: BMPR1A, P=0.001; BMPR2, P<0.001; Smad4, P=0.001; Smad1/5/8, P=0.008). In conclusion, the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs on polydopamine coating scaffolds could be enhanced by SMF stimulation by upregulation of the BMP-Smads signaling pathway.

Finger skin blood perfusion during exposure of ulnar and median nerves to the static magnetic field of a rare-earth magnet: A randomized pilot study

This pilot study's goal was to investigate the impacts of static magnetic fields (SMF) on finger skin blood perfusion (SBP) when exposing the ulnar artery and ulnar and medial nerves to a rare earth concentric magnet for 30 minutes. Control SBP was measured in 4^th fingers of adults (n = 12, age 26.0 ± 1.4 years) for 15 minutes using laser-Doppler. Then, active-magnets were placed over one arm's ulnar and median nerves at the wrist and sham-magnets placed at corresponding sites on the other arm. Devices were randomly assigned and placed by an investigator "blinded" to device type. The maximum SMF perpendicular to skin was 0.28 T measured 2 mm from magnet surface. The tangential field at this distance was 0.20 T. SBP was analyzed and tested for differential effects attributable to magnets compared to shams in each of the 5-minute intervals over the full 45-minute experiment. Results showed no statistically significant difference between SBP measured on the magnet-treated side compared to the sham side. Magnet and sham side SBP values (mean ± SEM, arbitrary units) prior to device placement were 0.568 ± 0.128 vs. 0.644 ± 0.115, p = .859 and during device placement were 0.627 ± 0.135 vs. 0.645 ± 0.117, p = .857. In conclusion, these findings have failed to uncover any significant effects of the static magnetic field on skin blood perfusion in the young healthy adult population evaluated. Its potential for altering SBP in more mature persons or those with underlying conditions affecting blood flow has not been evaluated but represents the next target of research inquiry. Co-enhanced activated sludge system by static magnetic field and two halotolerant yeasts for azo dye treatment

The effect of static magnetic field (SMF) on azo dye Acid Red B (ARB) decolorization by the co-culture of activated sludge (AS) and two halotolerant yeasts Candida tropicalis A1 and Pichia occidentalis A2 was investigated. Microbial community structure of the co-cultures before and after treatment with SMFs of different intensity was analyzed through high-throughput sequencing and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that ARB decolorization efficiency by the defined co-culture was 1.25-fold to 1.51-fold elevated by 24.6-305.0 mT SMF. The best ARB decolorization and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal performances by the co-culture were both achieved with 95.0 mT SMF. By contrast, biomass multiplication and sedimentation property of AS systems were not significantly influenced by SMF. Higher activities of intracellular key enzymes were determined (with 95.0 mT SMF) as responsible for better decolorization and COD removal performances. Bacteria belonging to Prolixibacter, Corynebacterium, Pelagibacterium, Demequina, and Sphingobacterium which might be responsible for azo dye decolorization and aromatic compounds biodegradation were significantly enriched only in presence of SMF. Fungal genera Candida and Pichia were also significantly enriched by 41.4-305.0 mT SMF, which might be responsible for higher treatment efficiency. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Dye degradation was enhanced by combination of static magnetic field and yeasts. Improvement of enzyme activity was responsible for better treatment performance. Putative azo-degrading-related bacteria and fungi were selectively enriched. High relative abundance of Candida and Pichia ensured high decolorization effects. Potentially effective improvement of bioprocesses for treating hypersaline wastewater.

Protective Effects of Moderate Intensity Static Magnetic Fields on Diabetic Mice

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of moderate-intensity static magnetic field (SMF) on diabetic mice. We studied the effects of SMF on blood glucose of normal mice by starch tolerance and glucose tolerance tests. Then, we evaluated the effects of SMF on blood glucose of diabetic mice by establishing alloxan-induced type 1 diabetic mice and high-fat diet + streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetic mice. The results showed that different magnetic field intensities and blank control did not affect the blood glucose of normal mice. After starch and glucose administration, different magnetic fields could improve the glucose tolerance of normal mice, and this was obvious in the 600 mT group. In the experiment of type 1 diabetic mice induced by alloxan, the results showed that different magnetic field intensities could improve the starch tolerance of mice, and that in the 400 mT group was obvious. In the experiment of type 2 diabetic mice induced by a high-fat diet + STZ, the 400 mT group could reduce food intake and water consumption in the later period. The 600 mT group could improve the starch tolerance of mice. The 400 and 600 mT groups could reduce fasting blood glucose. At the same time, total cholesterol and triglyceride decreased in different magnetic field intensities, and the 600 mT group could significantly increase the serum insulin content of mice. Effects of Static Magnetic Field on Compression Properties of Mg-Al-Gd Alloys Containing Gd-Rich Ferromagnetic Phase

The Mg-0.6Al-20.8Gd (wt.%) alloys were homogenized at 620 °C for 20 min under 0 T and 1 T, followed by furnace cooling, quenching, and air cooling, respectively. The effects of the magnetic field on the phase constituent, microstructure, secondary phase precipitation, and mechanical properties of the Mg-Al-Gd alloys were investigated. The Mg-Al-Gd alloys contained α-Mg, Mg₅Gd, Al₂Gd, and GdH₂ phases, and the phase constituents were hardly influenced by the applied magnetic field. However, the precipitation of the paramagnetic Mg₅Gd upon cooling was accelerated by the magnetic field, and that of the ferromagnetic Al₂Gd phases was inhibited. In addition, the Al₂Gd phase was significantly refined and driven to segregate at the grain boundaries by the magnetic field, and the resultant pinning effect led to the microstructure change from dendritic α-Mg grains to rosette-like ones. When the magnetic field was only applied to the homogenization stage, the content of the Mg₅Gd phase remained unchanged in the quenched alloy, whereas the Mg₅Gd laths were significantly refined. By contrast, the contents of the Al₂Gd and GdH₂ phases were increased, while the precipitation sites were still within the α-Mg grains. The Mg₅Gd laths were incapable of providing precipitation strengthening, while the Al₂Gd and GdH₂ particles brought positive effects on the enhancement of the mechanical properties. In the quenching condition, the hardness, compression strength, and ductility can be improved by the magnetic treatment, whereas these mechanical properties can be suppressed in the furnace cooled condition by the magnetic treatment.

The Lorentz force on ions in membrane channels of neurons as a mechanism for transcranial static magnetic stimulation

Transcranial static magnetic stimulation is a novel noninvasive method of reduction of the cortical excitability in certain neurological diseases that makes use of static magnetic fields generated by permanent magnets. By contrast, ordinary transcranial magnetic stimulation makes use of pulsed magnetic fields generated by strong currents. Whereas the physical principle underlying ordinary transcranial magnetic stimulation is well known, that is, the Faraday´s law, the physical mechanism that explains the interaction between neurons and static magnetic fields in transcranial static magnetic stimulation remains unclear. In the present work, it is discussed the possibility that this mechanism might be the Lorentz force exerted on the ions flowing along the membrane channels of neurons. The overall effect of the static magnetic field would be to introduce an additional friction between the ions and the walls of the membrane channels, thus reducing its conductance. Calculations performed by using a Hodgkin-Huxley model demonstrate that even a slight reduction of the conductance of the membrane channels can lead to the suppression of the action potential, thus inhibiting neuronal activity.

Impact of the Static Magnetic Field on Growth, Pigments, Osmolytes, Nitric Oxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Activity, Antioxidant Defense System, and Yield in Lettuce

Magnetic fields are an unavoidable physical factor affecting living organisms. Lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa var. cabitat L.) were subjected to various intensities of the static magnetic field (SMF) viz., MF0 (control), SMF1 (0.44 Tesla (T), SMF2 (0.77 T), and SMF3 (1 T) for three exposure times (1, 2, and 3 h). SMF-treated seedlings showed induction in growth parameters and metabolism comparing to control. All photosynthetic pigments were induced markedly under SMF, especially chlorophyll a. SMF at different intensities boosted osmolytes, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity over non-magnetized seedlings. Oxidative damage criteria viz., hydrogen peroxide, superoxide radical, and lipid peroxidation, as well as polyphenol oxidase activity, were kept at low values under SMF-treated seeds relative to control, especially SMF2. Electron donors to antioxidant enzymes including nitrate reductase, nitric oxide, and hydrogen sulfide induced via SMF exposure and consequently the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferases, catalase, and peroxidases family enzymes were also stimulated under SMF, whatever the intensity or the exposure period applied. All these regulations reflected on the enhancement of lettuce yield production which reached 50% over the control at SMF3. Our findings offered that SMF-seed priming is an innovative and low-cost strategy that can improve the growth, bioactive constituents, and yield of lettuce.
