Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of birdsfoot trefoil and chicory on parasitic nematode development, survival and migration when compared with perennial ryegrass. In experiment one, sheep faeces, containing 10,385 Cooperia curticei eggs were added to 25 cm diameter pots containing birdsfoot trefoil, chicory or ryegrass, and the pots maintained under optimal conditions for nematode parasite development. Replicate pots of each forage type were destructively sampled on day 8, 16, 20, 28 and 37 to collect the nematode larvae. When forages were compared on a dry matter basis, by day 16 there were 31% and 19% fewer larvae on birdsfoot trefoil and chicory than on ryegrass, respectively (P<0.01). In the second experiment, replicate 1m(2) field plots of birdsfoot trefoil, chicory and ryegrass were sub-sampled on day 14, 21, 35 and 49 for larval counts following the application of sheep faeces containing 585,000 Teladorsagia circumcincta eggs to each plot on day 0. Results showed there were a minimum of 58% and 63% fewer infective stage parasitic larvae on birdsfoot trefoil and chicory, respectively, compared with ryegrass on day 14 and 35 when forages were compared on a forage dry matter, plot area sampled and leaf area basis (P<0.01). Overall, these results indicate that the number of infective stage larvae on birdsfoot trefoil and chicory pasture was reduced by the effect of their sward structure on the development/survival/migration of ovine parasitic nematodes. These effects may be one of the ways in which these forages may affect parasitic infections in grazing livestock.

Abstract
Cases of Libyostrongylus douglassii-associated proventriculitis in an adult female ostrich and two ostrich chicks occurring on two farms in different federal states of Germany are described. The adult bird was recently bought and kept under quarantaine conditions without contact to other animals of the herd. Without developing clinical signs of illness, the animal died. At necropsy, typical lesions of wireworm infection were found. The lining of the stomach had a moth-eaten appearance. Massive amounts of adult stages of trichostrongyloid nematodes were diagnosed in histological specimens of the proventricular mucosa and under the koilin layer of the ventriculus. The worms were isolated from the proventriculus and identified as L. douglassii. The feces of the bird contained high amounts of typical eggs of the worms with a medium size of approximately 70 x 40 microm. A polyphasic degeneration of heart and skeletal muscle was diagnosed in addition to the wireworm infection and interpreted to be a result of a malnutrition (Vit. E-/selenium deficiency). The ostrich chicks were reared on another farm and submitted for necropsy because of high mortality (8 out of 12 chicks died). A massive invasion of the proventricular mucosa with L. douglassi was macroscopically and histologically detected at necropsy of the anemic birds.

Abstract
Ollulanus tricuspis is a small nematode of the family Ollulanidae, found in the stomach of domestic cats and other felids. Of 131 gastric biopsy samples collected at endoscopic examination, four were shown to contain the parasite. Vomiting was the main presenting sign in three cats and weight loss in the fourth. The stomachs were grossly normal on endoscopic examination. Chronic gastritis was observed histologically in two cases, while the remaining cases were microscopically normal. The significance of the parasite remained undetermined. To our knowledge, this is the first report of O. tricuspis infection in domestic cats in which the diagnosis was made by examining routine endoscopic biopsy samples.

Abstract
Domestic production of ostrich in Brazil started in the beginning of the last decade, but its sanitary state has not been reported. Libyostrongylus sp. is an ostrich specific nematode whose parasitism can severely affect the birds. Thus, Libyostrongylus spp. larvae were identified in commercial ostriches in the north region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The EPG was determined and fecal cultivation was performed. The eggs presented typical characteristics of strongylid and were present in five out of six farms. The mean EPG varied from 22 to 2395 and Libyostrongylus spp. prevalence was from 0 to 100%, with adult birds more infected. Two types of infective larvae with tail finishing in a tipped spiny knob were distinguished. The first had a mean length of 848 microm (710-1010) with a long sheath tail of about 66 microm (52-112). The other had a mean length of 826 microm (620-940) with a short, more abruptly ending sheath tail of 32 microm (22-40) and a less rounded cephalic end. The differences between these larvae suggest two Libyostrongylus species.

Abstract
A computer model of the population biology of Ostertagia ostertagi in young cattle and the effect of the parasite on animal growth has been constructed. It was validated against results from field trials where worm populations and rate of growth of cattle treated with anthelmintics were compared to similar groups of untreated animals. A close correlation between observed and predicted values for faecal egg and pasture larval counts was seen in the cattle which had been treated with an oxfendazole pulse release bolus at turnout. Timings and peak values were less accurately predicted in the untreated cattle. Although predictions for live weight gain during the grazing season indicated that the model may be overestimating the potential growth rate of cattle, it is considered that the model provides a suitable tool for comparing the effectiveness of different worming programmes under farm conditions. The computer simulation also allowed examination of the underlying influences and interactions between parasitological factors, such as numbers of immature and adult worms, and animal and pasture factors, such as sward height, grass consumption and feed conversion, in the parasite's influence on animal performance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of grazing different bioactive forages on acquired immunity against Teladorsagia circumcinta infection. The development of immunity was assessed by following the response of trickle-infected lambs grazing chicory (Cichorium intybus; IC), sulla (Hedysarum coronarium; IS) or grass/clover (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens; IGC), to a single challenge infection. Parasite-naive lambs, grazing grass/clover, were also challenged with the single infection dose providing the uninfected control (UGC) group. Trickle infection significantly reduced worm establishment, inhibited larval development and increased mucosal mast cell (MMC) and globule leucocyte (GL) cells. Grazing treatment (chicory, sulla or grass/clover) significantly affected adult worm (P<0.05), late-L4 (P<0.01) and mid-L4 (P<0.01) larval-stage recoveries of the trickle-infected lambs, with IGC group always carrying higher worm burdens than either IC or IS lambs. MMC and GL cells of trickle-infected lambs were positively correlated with the proportion of early-L4 worms recovered and negatively correlated with both the proportion of adult worms recovered and the total worm establishment, suggesting that the observed effects were due to an enhanced immune response. The results suggest elevated immune responses against T. circumcincta infections in growing lambs grazing on either sulla or chicory compared to those grazing on grass/clover, probably due to differences in forage nutritional values.

Abstract
Twenty-four calves unexposed to pasture were allocated to four groups and inoculated with either two doses of 5 million Eimeria alabamensis oocysts at turn-out (E), 90,000 L3 of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora divided on six occasions (N) or both oocysts and larvae as above (E + N). A control group was left uninoculated (C). For 10 weeks, the groups grazed in separate uniform paddocks not previously grazed by cattle. By day 5, most calves in groups E and E + N developed clinical coccidiosis that resulted in reduced weight gain compared to C and N. Mean trichostrongylid faecal egg counts in groups N and E + N never exceeded 300 eggs per gram of faeces, and average serum pepsinogen levels were less than 3.8 U tyrosine. This experiment demonstrates the potential impact of E. alabamensis on the performance of previously unexposed calves, whereas no aggravated effects were observed due to concurrent infections with gastrointestinal nematodes.

Abstract
Seeds of Butea monosperma administered as crude powder (CP) at doses of 1, 2 and 3 g/kg to sheep naturally infected with mixed species of gastrointestinal nematodes exhibited a dose and a time-dependent anthelmintic effect. The maximum reduction of 78.4% in eggs per gram of feces (EPG) was recorded on day 10 after treatment with 3 g/kg. Levamisole (7.5 mg/kg), a standard anthelmintic agent, exhibited 99.1% reduction in EPG.

Abstract
Anthelmintic efficacies against juvenile developing populations of Teladorsagia species that were known to be resistant to anthelmintics from all three broad spectrum families were examined using a controlled efficacy test. Fenbendazole (FBZ), levamisole (LEV), ivermectin (IVM), combinations of these anthelmintics and moxidectin (MOX) were assessed in parasite naïve lambs artificially infected with 8,000 third stage larvae (Tci5) and treated orally 8-day post-infection with the compounds at the manufacturers recommended dose rates, FBZ, 5 mg/kg body weight (BW); LEV, 7.5 mg/kg BW; IVM, 0.2 mg/kg BW; MOX (0.2 mg/kg BW). The lambs were slaughtered 14-day post-treatment. The arithmetic mean worm burden reductions resulting from oral treatments with FBZ; IVM; LEV; FBZ+IVM; FBZ+LEV; FBZ, LEV+IVM or MOX were 36%, 82%, 38%, 86%, 60%, 88% and 97%, respectively. The results illustrate that combination treatments showed improved efficacies against the juvenile population compared to individually administered treatments but that these improvements were not wholly effective. Moxidectin was the only treatment that was over 95% effective, though caution should be noted when advising the use of MOX prophylactically since 3% of the infection still survived this treatment. Treatments directed at juvenile stages of Tci5 were less effective, with the exception of IVM, compared to a similar trial using Tci5 where the same treatments were directed against a predominantly adult population. No interaction was detected comparing the timings of treatments and its effectiveness with the exception of IVM (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that, on the whole, the selection processes for anthelmintic resistance (AR) may occur at an early stage of development within the parasites, having severe implications for the early detection of AR.

Abstract
The objective was to examine the coincidence in the prevalence of benzimidazole (Bz) resistance in smallholder goat herds, as determined by three average-based and two individually-based faecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests. Nineteen smallholder goat herds with more than 30 animals were selected from 84 herds in Yucatan. Animals shedding 150 eggs/g of faeces (EPG) on day zero were randomly divided into two groups. The control group did not receive treatment and the treated group received fenbendazole (10mg/kg body weight per os). Feed was withdrawn for 16 h before treatment. Ten days after treatment, both groups were sampled to determine their FEC. Faecal cultures and identification of infective larvae were performed for estimating the proportions of genera of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) present. Presence of resistant GIN was determined with three different average-based FECR (FECR(1), FECR(2) and FECR(3)) and two individually-based FECR (iFECR(1) and iFECR(2)). The prevalence of herds with Bz resistant nematodes (and 95% confidence interval (95% CI)) was calculated using each formula. Coincidence among formulae was estimated with Kappa values. The prevalence (+/- 95% CI) of Bz resistance calculated with FECR(1) (57.89 +/- 22.20) had a high coincidence with iFECR(1) and iFECR(2) (Kappa values of 0.86 and 0.79, respectively). The prevalence with FECR(2) (31.58 +/- 20.90) and FECR(3) (21.05 +/- 18.33) had a low coincidence with FECR(1) (Kappa < 0.50). Trichostrongylids found on Bz resistant farms were mainly Haemonchus spp., however, some Trichostrongylus spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. were found too. The high coincidence between the standard average-based FECR(1) and the individually based formulae is encouraging and may suggest that either formula could be applied to smallholder farmers. Further laboratory studies are needed to confirm the resistance status in the herds.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine if any relationship exists between responsiveness against gastrointestinal nematodes (GI) in lambs and circulating IgE-bearing cells. Scottish Blackface lambs that were grazing on pasture infected with Teladorsagia circumcincta (T. circumcincta) were ranked in order of their cumulative resistance to nematode infection as determined by their faecal egg counts (FECs) from material taken throughout the grazing season. The 10 lambs that had the lowest egg count rankings termed "responders" and the 10 lambs that had the highest egg count rankings termed "non-responders", were selected using data from the whole season or the middle or end of the grazing season. The number of circulating IgE-bearing cells present in the selected responder and non-responder lambs was investigated. The study was followed for two grazing seasons. Results showed that there were higher numbers of circulating IgE-bearing cells in the blood of responder lambs when compared to non-responders in the lambs selected from the middle of the season during both grazing seasons. A significant difference in the number of these IgE-bearing cells in responder and non-responder lambs was also demonstrated at the last two time points (p<0.05) of the initial grazing season. FACS analysis confirmed that IgE-bearing cells were found predominantly among lymphocytes/monocytes. The present study provides further evidence for an active role for IgE antibody in nematode immunity, and suggests that these circulating IgE-bearing cells might serve as additional markers for selecting animals that are responsive against T. circumcincta infections in lambs.

Abstract
Faecal egg counts were examined in 2 flocks of naturally infected Scottish Blackface sheep in southern and central Scotland. The distribution of mean counts was right skewed and similar to a gamma distribution. The counts varied with month, with mean counts rising from May to July, then falling but rising again in October, although data within each year did not always show such a clear pattern. There was no significant difference in mean egg count between the 2 farms examined. The distribution of egg count variances was also right skewed and conformed to a gamma distribution. There was a strong relationship between the mean and the variance for each population, implying that variation among populations in variances largely mirrored variation in mean egg counts. Populations with high mean egg counts and variances did not necessarily have more adult nematodes but had a greater number of adult nematodes from species other than Teladorsagia circumcincta, particularly Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus axei and Trichostrongylus vitrinus. The contribution of different parasite species to the egg count explains the relatively poor and inconsistent fit of the negative binomial distribution to faecal egg counts in lambs.

Abstract
Following the recent discovery of Libyostrongylus douglassii in ostriches in New Zealand, information relating to this nematode is reviewed. Amongst some of the topics considered are the parasite's distribution and prevalence, its life cycle and survival, and its diagnosis and control. Of particular interest from a New Zealand perspective is the potential for the parasite to infect other ratites, especially the kiwi. While the current evidence suggests that this may be unlikely to occur, the possibility that it might be able to do so cannot be ruled out entirely.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the occurrence of resistance to a full dose of oral ivermectin by Cooperia curticei in sheep. METHODS Twelve lambs on a sheep and cattle property in the North Island of New Zealand were randomly allocated to one of two equal-sized groups. One group was treated orally with a single dose of ivermectin at the manufacturer's recommended dose rate of 0.2 mg/kg, while the other remained as an untreated control. Worm counts were carried out post mortem on the abomasa and small intestines of all animals in both groups 7 days after treatment. RESULTS While treatment with ivermectin reduced the numbers of all other worm genera to almost zero, those of Ostertagia(= Telodorsagia) circumcincta and C. curticei were reduced by only 37% and 19%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results provide clear evidence of resistance to ivermectin by O. circumcincta and C. curticei. They also appear to represent the first record of macrocylic lactone (ML) resistance in C. curticei in sheep in New Zealand or elsewhere.

Abstract
The taxonomic status of some nippostrongyline nematodes deposited in the National Collection ofAnimal Helminths, Onderstepoort, is revised. Heligmonina boomkeri n. sp. is described from Aethomys chrysophilus from South Africa. The most closely related species by the body measurementsand the pattern of the caudal bursa is Heligmonina bignonensis Diouf, Bâ & Durette-Desset, 1997, a parasite of Mastomys erythroleucus from Senegal. It differs from the new species mainly in thenumber of ventral cuticular ridges at mid-body (four versus five) and the left ala in the male is shorterthan the body diameter. The systematic position of Heligmonina spira (Ortlepp, 1939) and Neoheligmonella capensis (Ortlepp, 1939) is confirmed here through their synlophe, which was not previously studied.

Abstract
The control of gastrointestinal nematodes requires an understanding of their epidemiology so that particular parasite stages can be targeted. Dam infection during early lactation is one example of this in ruminant nematode infections. The existence of the peri-parturient relaxation in immunity and its impact on productivity were examined in a Creole goat flock from Guadeloupe, exposed to mixed natural infection (predominantly Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis). A total of 1,511 l were obtained from 909 does resulting from 463 dams and 150 sires. Fecal and blood samples were collected at kidding before anthelmintic drenching, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding. The traits analyzed were logarithm transformed fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), and logarithm transformed blood eosinophilia counts (EOS) for does at each sampling point and changes in these during the postpartum period. With the exception of the PCV values measured at kidding, lactating does had significantly higher FEC and lower PCV than control dry does at every sampling point. Geometric means of FEC in lactating does were 819 +/- 174, 677 +/- 146 and, 699 +/- 160 eggs per gram (EPG) at kidding, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding respectively. Geometric means of FEC in dry does were 187 +/- 57, 89 +/- 28, 133 +/- 43 at these time points, respectively. EOS differences were not consistent between groups and probably not specific enough for variations in Creole goats' peri-parturient rise to be discussed. As does aged, their egg output decreased and primiparous does always had greater egg output than multiparous ones. Overall, does' FEC at 4 weeks after kidding decreased by 1.3% each year. The higher the litter size, the higher the FEC at kidding and inverse applied for PCV measurements. Does that stopped lactating had significantly lower FEC and higher PCV values than lactating does with low milk yields. Higher infection rates during early lactation in Creole goats were recorded in does with lower maternal ability assessed by the average daily weight gain of kids between 10 and 30 days of age. Kids from dams with higher FEC (i.e. >600 EPG higher than corresponding does) had 17% lower average daily weight gain between 30 and 70 days postpartum and were approximately 1 kg lighter at weaning than kids from dams with lower FEC. Thus, it is clear that a peri-parturient rise in FEC exists in Creole goats. By controlling the intensity of this peri-parturient rise in FEC, herd health and productivity could be substantially improved.

Abstract
SUMMARY The aim of this study was to understand the influence of a low protein diet on the resistance of the Churra breed sheep to infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta. A previous experiment in our department demonstrated significant differences between resistant and susceptible sheep infected with T. circumcincta, in eggs per gram of faeces, serum pepsinogen, serum IgA and peripheral eosinophilia (unpublished). The sheep were fed with a balanced protein diet. In the current assay there were significant differences between the resistant and susceptible groups in egg output, serum pepsinogen and worm burden. The optical densities (OD) of the IgA in blood samples, nasal secretions and saliva were tested throughout the study and the differences between groups were not significant. At necropsy adult worm length, the number of eggs in utero in adult females, the number of fourth stage larvae and the OD of gastric mucus IgA did not differ between groups either. Moreover, due to diet there was a loss of weight in both groups but this was not significant. Our results support the view that low protein diets could influence immune function and as a result resistant genotypes do not show any superiority in comparison with susceptible ones.

Abstract
SUMMARY Previous experiments have shown that genetic resistance to infection by Teladorsagia circumcincta in sheep can be measured by the level of IgA in gastric mucus, jointly with other parameters. The aim of this study has been to observe the influence of IgA on adult worms. The experiment was carried out with Churra sheep experimentally infected with T. circumcincta. At slaughter, gastric content, gastric mucus, blood samples and faeces were recovered to determine the number of eggs in utero, length of adult females, worm burden, number of L4, titre of serum pepsinogen, peripheral eosinophilia and eggs per gram (epg). IgA activity in gastric mucus, serum, nasal secretions and saliva were tested against somatic antigen from fourth-stage larvae (L4), somatic antigen from the adult stage and excretory-secretory (E/S) antigen from the adult stage. The results showed a significant correlation between serum IgA and gastric mucus (P<0.01) as well as in nasal secretions (P<0.01). We found negative correlations between IgA activity in gastric mucus with the eggs in utero and with adult female length. Furthermore there were also strong relationships between the peripheral eosinophilia with serum (P<0.01) and gastric mucus IgA activity (P<0.01). Moreover serum pepsinogen and the number of L4 at slaughter were related (P<0.01).

Abstract
Coprological examination on camels (Camelus dromedarius) from different localities in Egypt revealed the presence of Nematodirus eggs in 38 out of 312 (12.18%). The faecal samples positive to Nematodirus eggs were cultured for collection of infective third stage larvae (L3). Details of the general and differential categories of each sample were given. The recovered species were Nematodirus battus, Nematodirus filicollis and Nematodirus spathiger.

Abstract
Eosinophilia is a well documented feature of helminth infections but the precise nature of the interaction between parasite and eosinophil remains an enigma. This paper describes experiments demonstrating that ruminant gastrointestinal trichostrongyles produce potent chemoattractant activity for ovine bone marrow-derived eosinophils in vitro. This activity was initially identified as a constituent of whole worm extracts of third and fourth larval (L3, L4), and adult stages of Teladorsagia circumcincta, and adult Haemonchus contortus. Similar activity was detected in excretory/secretory (E/S) material derived from live T. circumcincta L3. Subsequently, by adapting the assay technique to incorporate live worms directly into the system, it was shown that L3 of both T. circumcincta and H. contortus produced eosinophil chemoattractant activity. In contrast, neither whole worm extracts, or E/S preparations from mixed stages of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans contained eosinophil chemoattractant activity, and there was no evidence of chemoattractant production by live C. elegans. The results described are challenging to the traditional dogma that eosinophils are host-protective effector cells, and raise the intriguing possibility that ovine nematodes actively encourage recruitment of eosinophils. Local eosinophil-mediated mucosal damage, comparable to that seen in the asthmatic lung, may then provide a permissive local microenvironment for the parasite. Moreover, if they prove important for pathogenicity, nematode chemoattractants could offer future potential as novel therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Helminth infection acquired by lambs grazing on pastures fertilised either by urban sewage sludge or cattle slurry were studied in temperate Central Western France. The aim was to assess the risk of larval cestodoses in lambs after sewage application and of digestive tract nematode infection following the slurry application. Twenty-six sheep were allocated on two paddocks of 0.7 ha, one fertilised with sludge and the other with cattle slurry. The delay between application and actual grazing was 6 weeks; grazing on these paddocks extended from mid July to beginning of November 2002. The herbage biomass was slightly increased in the sludge paddock but it did not result in an increase of lamb live weight, compared with the slurry paddock. The lambs did not acquire cysticercosis or any other larval cestodoses in the sewage sludge group and only very limited infections with Cooperia spp. and Nematodirus spp. were observed in the slurry group. It was concluded that in our conditions the helminth risk was extremely low and was not a cause of restriction of the use of these biowastes.

Abstract
In July 1999, 2 heteromyid rodents Heteromys desmarestianus Gray, 1868, were collected from the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and examined for parasites. Individuals of a new species of Vexillata (Travassos, 1937) Durette-Desset, 1970, were found from the intestine of hosts. Vexillata brooksi n. sp. differs from all other congeners by the presence of spicules divided at the tip instead of simple spicules. The new species closely resembles Vexillata legallae Denke, 1977, and Vexillata convoluta (Caballero and Cerecero, 1943); however, it can be distinguished from both species by possessing a smaller number of cuticular ridges at the posterior part of the body in males (9 vs. 11 and 12, respectively) and by the absence of a carene at this level.

Abstract
A relationship for Pseudostertagia bullosa within the trichostrongyloids has been enigmatic or unresolved. Studies of the synlophe in males and females of P. bullosa revealed a tapering system anterior to the deirids and a pattern of parallel ridges extending to near the caudal extremity in both lateral and median fields. Structurally, the synlophe differs considerably from that seen among the Cooperiinae and exhibits homoplasy with respect to ridge systems among some Ostertagiinae. Other structural characters due to symplesiomorphy, homoplasy or because they represent autapomorphies do not serve to reveal the putative relationships for P. bullosa with other trichostrongyloids. Although somewhat equivocal, the 2-2-1 pattern of the bursa and position of rays 2 and 3 suggest an association with the Cooperinae, as postulated by Durette-Desset and others. Pseudostertagia bullosa appears to be a species that has survived in the pronghorn, Antilocapra americana, a relictual pecoran artiodactyl that occurs in xeric regions of western North America; pronghorn are the sole remnant of the late Tertiary radiation for Antilocapridae across North America. Pseudostertagia bullosa may occur in mixed infections with a number of ostertagiines in the abomasa of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and domestic sheep (Ovis aries) in regions of sympatry for pronghorn and these artiodactyl hosts.

Abstract
Between 1999 and 2003 studies were done at Utrecht University on the population dynamics of gastrointestinal nematodes and the potential to use evasive grazing for the control of nematode infections in small ruminants. On most pastures grazed in May and June it took at least 3 weeks before high pasture infectivity levels for Haemonchus contortus developed while it took at least 2 weeks on pastures grazed in July, August and September. Occasionally, larvae emerged earlier on pasture when high temperatures coincided with rain. Pasture infectivity levels for H. contortus subsequently increased and the highest levels were found between 5 and 9 weeks on pastures grazed in May-June and between 3 and 9 weeks on pastures grazed in July, August and September. Pasture infectivity usually had decreased again to low levels after approximately 3 months. Larvae of the other trichostrongylids emerged later on pasture. However, patterns of Teladorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus spp. and Cooperia curticei were basically similar to H. contortus. Strongyloides papillosus larvae emerge within 2 weeks on pasture and survival is short. On the other hand Nematodirus larvae took a lot longer to emerge on pasture than the other trichostrongylids. The results imply that only on a small proportion of farms (mixed dairy cattle/sheep farms; some organic dairy goat farms) evasive grazing can be recommended as only control measure for parasitic gastroenteritis. However, the present data offer possibilities to combine evasive grazing with other methods in an integrated control scheme.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of the condensed tannin (CT)-containing forage sericea lespedeza (sericea lespedeza (SL); Lespedeza cuneata; 15.2% CT), on fecal egg count (FEC), larval development (larvae/10 g of feces), worm burden and immune response compared with a crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum)/Kentucky 31 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea; control forage (CTF)) forage low in CT (0.32% CT) in grazing Angora does and their kids. Fifty worm-free mixed-age does were randomly allocated to three treatments. One treatment (10 does; initial liveweight (LW) = 45+/-1.5 kg) entailed grazing of SL forage from April 25 to July 15, 2002 with a second treatment of CTF (20 does; initial LW = 43+/-1.4 kg) grazing during the same period. Does of the third treatment (20 does; initial LW = 44+/-1.4 kg) grazed a sward of SL for 2 weeks and then one of CTF for 2 weeks followed by alternating between the two pastures every 2-week rotational grazing (ROT). To gauge levels of infective larvae on pasture, three worm-free Angora kids (initial LW = 3.6+/-0.2 kg) were randomly selected as tracers. Tracers grazed for final 60 days and were euthanized for determination of worm burden. The immune response of does was measured by skin thickness reaction after the intradermal injection of 250 microg phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Mean FEC for SL and ROT were substantially lower (P < 0.01) than for CTF does (145, 329 and 894 eggs/g, respectively). The FEC for kids was lower (P < 0.05) for SL than for ROT and CTF (550, 2757 and 3600 eggs/g, respectively). Total fecal egg output (3.3, 6.0 and 26.9 x 10(5) eggs/day, respectively) and larval development (242, 263 and 792 larvae/10 g, respectively) were lower (P < 0.05) for SL and ROT than for CTF. Tracers grazing on SL had lower total worm burdens than ROT and CTF (P < 0.01). The immune response was higher (P < 0.01) for SL (4.9 mm) and ROT (6.0 mm) than for CTF (3.0 mm) at 12 h after injection of PHA. The packed cell volume (PCV) in does was higher (P < 0.01) for SL and ROT than for CTF (27, 26 and 23%, respectively). Does that grazed CT-containing forage had considerably lower milk somatic cell counts (SCC) than does grazing non-CT-containing forage. In summary, grazing CT forages reduced FEC, larval development and worm burden, and also appeared to enhance immune response. The CT-containing forage SL reduced gastro-intestinal parasite infections of Angora does and kids.

Abstract
Diet-induced changes in the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of immune cells influences the immune phenotype that develops following infection. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of manipulating dietary PUFA supply on tissue fatty acids composition and immunity to a mixed infection with an abomasal and an intestinal nematode parasite in calves. Calves (n=24) were allocated into two treatment groups and fed 25 g/day of either fish oil (n-3 group) or a binary mixture of palm/rapeseed oil (normal group) as a supplement in milk replacer. Within each treatment group eight calves were infected with 2000 L3 Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora, three times per week for 8 weeks, the remaining calves were pair-fed uninfected controls. Faecal egg counts (FEC) were carried out twice weekly. At slaughter, the whole gut was removed intact for worm counts and tissue samples were taken for fatty acid analysis. Samples of abomasum, duodenum and mid-gut were also collected for immunohistological analysis. FEC were not significantly influenced by oil supplement but tended to remain higher in the palm/rapeseed oil-fed group (normal infected). The number of intestinal immature worms was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the n-3 group. Mucosal mast cell (MMC) and eosinophil numbers were significantly increased (p<0.05) by infection and were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the intestinal tissue of the fish oil supplemented and infected group (n-3 infected group). These results suggest that feeding an n-3 PUFA-rich supplement (fish oil) can influence cellular mediators of immunity to nematode infection. This is the first report of the establishment of patency and the subsequent development of immunity to a mixed infection with O. ostertagi and C. oncophora in calves undergoing early rumen development. The trend in the FEC, MMC and eosinophil numbers in the n-3 group suggests that decreasing the dietary n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio may be a worthwhile immunonutritional strategy for potentiating the immune response to nematode parasite infection in the calf.

Abstract
A larval feeding assay for detection of nematode anthelmintic resistance to macrocyclic lactones and imidazothiazoles is described. The estimated concentration of anthelmintic required to inhibit larval feeding in 50% of L1's (IC50) that were resistant to either macrocyclic lactones or imidazothiazoles were significantly higher (P < or = 0.05) than those of susceptible isolates. Some variations in IC50 values were observed during the patent period of infection in all strains, although the pattern of the IC50 followed the same course. IC50 values varied in larvae developing from eggs shed throughout the patent period, with low values in the earliest larvae followed by higher values as the infection progressed, before decreasing at 70-90 days post-infection, although the low values of the first part of the patent period were not reached. However, the IC50 differences between all resistant and susceptible strains were significant throughout the whole patent period for ivermectin and levamisole. These results suggest that this technique may provide an alternative in vitro to detect anthelmintic resistance.

Abstract
This report describes a new molecular method for the diagnosis of benzimidazole susceptibility or resistance in three main species of trichostrongylids of sheep (Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus vitrinus). This assay is based on the use of real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect mutations of residue 200 on isotype 1 of beta-tubulin. The technique allows calculation of the proportion of each allelic variant as it combines kinetic (real time quantitative) PCR with allele-specific amplification and requires no post-PCR processing. The level of resistance in the population is determined by the proportion of the beta-tubulin codon 200 TAC allele. Hence, it was observed that the proportion of the resistant allele in susceptible strains ranged between 24% and 32.3%; in resistant strains this value increased to between 71.3% and 86.3%. Furthermore, there was a good correlation between real time PCR, faecal egg count reduction test, egg hatch assay and conventional allele-specific PCR, in both resistant and susceptible strains. A sensitive, rapid, highly reproducible and inexpensive technique for detecting resistance to benzimidazoles in a worm population has been developed.

Abstract
Macroparasites are almost always aggregated across their host populations, hence the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) with its exponent parameter k is widely used for modelling, quantifying or analysing parasite distributions. However, many studies have pointed out some drawbacks in the use of the NBD, with respect to the sensitivity of k to the mean number of parasites per host or the under-representation of the heavily infected hosts in the estimate of k. In this study, we compare the fit of the NBD with 4 other widely used distributions on observed parasitic gastrointestinal nematode distributions in their sheep host populations (11 datasets). Distributions were fitted to observed data using maximum likelihood estimator and the best fits were selected using the Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). A simulation study was also conducted in order to assess the possible bias in parameter estimations especially in the case of small sample sizes. We found that the NBD is seldom the best fit for gastrointestinal nematode distributions. The Weibull distribution was clearly more appropriate over a very wide range of degrees of aggregation, mainly because it was more flexible in fitting the heavily infected hosts. Moreover, the Weibull distribution estimates are less sensitive to sample size. Thus, when possible, we suggest to carefully check on observed data if the NBD is appropriate before conducting any further analysis on parasite distributions.

Abstract
The effects of protein supply and reproductive status on circulating antibody responses and local inflammatory cell counts were investigated in parasitized sheep, with local immune responses assessed through a recently refined abomasal cannulation methodology. We hypothesized that if breakdown of immunity has a nutritional basis, then protein scarcity would result in a breakdown of immunity to Teladorsagia circumcincta in both periparturient and non-reproducing (barren) ewes. Twin-bearing and barren, abomasally cannulated ewes were fed at either 0.8 or 1.3 times protein requirements from 3 weeks before until 6 weeks after parturition (n = 6). All sheep were trickle infected at a rate of 10,000 infective larvae (L3) per day, for 3 days per week throughout the experiment. Faecal egg counts remained virtually zero in all barren ewes, whilst protein supplementation reduced faecal egg counts in the periparturient ewes during most of the periparturient period. Final worm burdens, taken at 6 weeks into lactation, were lower for the barren ewes than for the lactating ewes, whilst protein supplementation reduced worm burdens in the latter. Protein supply did not affect mucosal mast cell counts, which were consistently higher for the barren ewes than the periparturient ewes, but were temporarily decreased around parturition. Barren ewes and protein supplemented lactating ewes had higher globule leukocyte counts than the unsupplemented lactating ewes. Protein supplementation increased eosinophil counts in the lactating ewes though only during the later part of the lactation period. Plasma IgA anti-L3 antibody was similar for all ewes, but IgE anti-L3 antibody was higher for the protein supplemented periparturient ewes compared to the unsupplemented periparturient ewes and all barren ewes. It is likely that the combination of low protein requirements and large body protein reserves did not result in breakdown of immunity to T. circumcincta for the barren ewes. These results suggest that changes in mucosal mast cell and eosinophil counts are not necessarily associated with changes in host resistance to T. circumcincta. However, the data support the view that increased globule leukocyte counts and plasma IgE anti-L3 antibody may be associated with nutritionally improved expression of immunity in periparturient ewes.

Abstract
The seasonal patterns of strongyle infections in untreated, weaned lambs were determined on four governmental farms during a grazing season. In three farms, the infection level (predominantly Teladorsagia spp. and Trichostrongylus spp.) measured by egg counts or worm burdens remained low throughout the study; higher egg counts mainly caused by Haemonchus contortus were transiently recorded on the fourth farm. Significant body weight gains were observed in all groups, but they varied between farms irrespective of the level of strongyle infections, suggesting that the economic effectiveness of anthelmintic treatments of weaned lambs is doubtful under the extensive grazing conditions and the hot, dry climate in the region. In the second part of the study, faecal egg count reduction tests were performed for albendazole, thiabendazole, tetramisole and ivermectin on 12 sheep and goat farms to provide first information on anthelmintic resistance in trichostrongyles of small ruminants in Turkey. There was no hint of benzimidazole resistance, and unequivocal evidence of ivermectin resistance was missing. In contrast, tetramisole resistance was detected on one sheep farm.

Abstract
Control of a benzimidazole-, levamisole- and ivermectin-resistant population of Teladorsagia circumcincta was attempted using moxidectin administered orally at the manufacturer's recommended dose rate of 200 microg/kg bodyweight. Ewes were dosed after lambing with the aim of controlling their periparturient rise in faecal egg output and lambs were dosed at six-week intervals throughout the summer. This regimen failed to suppress the establishment of significant numbers of infective helminth larvae on the pasture, resulting in unsatisfactory lamb production. Oral dosing with moxidectin was effective in removing adult female burdens of ivermectin-resistant T. circumcincta, but the effect of the drug did not persist against the resistant helminth population.

Abstract
The immediate as well as the persistent anthelmintic efficacies of topically applied eprinomectin were evaluated in goats against induced infections with Teladorsagia circumcincta (2800 L3) and Trichostrongylus colubriformis (6000 L3). Twenty-three culled dairy goats were allocated to the following groups: control animals (group 1), animals treated 21 days prior to nematode infection (group 2), animals treated 7 days prior to nematode infection (group 3) and animals treated 21 days after nematode infection (group 4). Eprinomectin was applied at twice the cattle dose rate (1.0 mg/kg BW). According to the groups, necropsies were undertaken 28 days after nematode infection (groups 1-3) or 14 days after the anthelmintic treatment (group 4). Worm counts were determined for abomasum and small intestine. The curative anthelmintic efficacy of eprinomectin at 1.0 mg/kg BW on existing worm burdens was 100% against T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis. Quite similar worm burdens reductions were observed when eprinomectin was administered 7 days before infection whereas they were only 52.4 and 17.8% for T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis, respectively, for an administration of the drug 21 days prior to the nematode infection.

Abstract
In an experiment lasting 4 years, changes in the Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis populations were compared in lambs and adult sheep with differing resistance statuses. Two flocks of 30 rams (resistant R and susceptible S) grazed separate pastures and 8 rams were slaughtered in the middle and at the end of each grazing season. Five groups of tracer lambs were added each year to estimate the pasture infectivity and were killed for worm counts. The availability of animals with differing resistance statuses (rams and tracer lambs) and differing levels of infection made it possible to investigate the number, size and fecundity of worms of these two species. The inflammatory response was measured in the rams by counting the globule leukocytes, mast cells and eosinophils in the fundic, pyloric and intestinal mucosa. In the tracer lambs, the daily egg production by the female worms of both species was negatively correlated with the worm burden. Worm length accounted for 60 and 70% of the variation in the number of eggs in utero for T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis respectively. Worm length was closely associated with the resistance status of the host; there were greater differences between lambs, and S and R rams for T. colubriformis. T. circumcincta worm lengths were not affected by the worm number. Globule leukocyte counts were related to the worm burdens, and mast cell counts to worm length in the R and S rams. The number, size and fecundity of the worms may well be regulated by similar mechanisms in both species, but T. colubriformis seemed to be more intensively regulated than T. circumcincta. This finding could be useful in devising more effective methods of parasite control.

Abstract
An in vitro direct challenge (IVDC) method in which abomasal tissue explants maintained at 37 degrees C in Hanks/Hepes solution (pH 7.6) in a high oxygen concentration (incubator gassed with pure oxygen and sealed prior to use) were-challenged with exsheathed third stage larvae of Teladorsagia circumcincta has been used to investigate the tissue association phase of larval establishment. Studies using naïve and recently challenged immune sheep and goat abomasal tissues have shown significant reductions (P < 0.05) in the numbers of tissue associated larvae in material from immune animals. The mechanisms that affect the tissue association process appear to be labile since more larvae were recovered from the tissue digests of previously infected sheep that had not been recently exposed to larval challenge in comparison to those that had been recently challenged (P < 0.05). The method has also been used to demonstrate the influence of protein nutrition on the establishment of larvae in abomasal tissues and region specific differences in the efficacy of exclusion mechanisms. The technique appears to have potential as a means of investigating the crucial first phase of the process of establishment.

Abstract
The anthelmintic resistance status of two field isolates derived from farms (farm A and B) located near Edinburgh were examined using both controlled efficacy tests (CET) and faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT). Efficacies against fenbendazole (FBZ), levamisole (LEV) and ivermectin (IVM) and, for one isolate, against combinations of these anthelmintics and moxidectin were determined in naïve lambs, artificially infected with the isolates and treated with the compounds at the manufacturers recommended dose rates. (FBZ, 5mg/kg bodyweight (BW); LEV, 7.5mg/kg BW; IVM, 0.2mg/kg BW; Moxidectin (MOX) 0.2mg/kg BW). In both field isolates, the predominant species found pre-treatment and the only species found post-treatment was Teladorsagia circumcincta. Resistance to FBZ, LEV and IVM was confirmed in CET and FECRT on farm A and to the latter two compounds on farm B, which had a history of benzimidazole resistance and where TBZ resistance was also demonstrated using an egg hatch assay (EHA). For the farm A isolate CET efficacies against FBZ; IVM; LEV; FBZ + IVM; FBZ + LEV; FBZ, LEV + IVM and MOX were 59, 60, 88, 94,93, 92 and 98%, respectively. The CET efficacies for the farm B isolate were 51% and 72% for LEV and IVM, respectively.

Abstract
The number ofTeladorsagia circumcincta4th-stage larvae in naturally infected lambs from a single farm varied among lambs and among different years. Within each year the distribution of 4th-stage larvae among lambs was similar to that expected from a negative binomial distribution. The ratio of 4th-stage larvae to adultT. circumcinctawas low in two years with a low mean intensity of infection but high in two years with a higher mean intensity of infection. The negative binomial distribution is defined by the mean and byk, a parameter that measures dispersion;kwas low when mean infection intensity was low but higher when mean infection intensity was high. Askis an inverse index of overdispersion this indicated that the distribution of 4th-stage larvae was more overdispersed at low levels of infection. In a combined analysis, the number of adultT. circumcinctaand the plasma IgA activity against 4th-stage larvae were both associated with increased numbers of 4th-stage larvae. There was a statistical interaction between the number of adults and IgA activity that moderated their combined effect.

Abstract
In April 2003, persistent scouring and ill-thrift that was reported in calves form an intensive beef rearing operation in central Argentina despite treatments with benzimidazole and ivermectin. In order to conduct a controlled faecal egg count reduction test on this herd, 40 calves 5-8-months-old were selected on the basis that they had a nematode eggs per gram (epg) of faeces count greater than 150. Animals were divided into four groups (1-4) of 10 calves. Calves of groups 1-3 were treated, respectively, with subcutaneous injection of ivermectin (200 mcg/kg), ricobendazole (4 mg/kg) and levamisole (7.5 mg/kg), while calves of group 4 remained as untreated controls. The egg count reductions carried out 10 days later were lower than 15% in calves treated with ivermectin and ricobendazole, but 100% in animals receiving levamisole. Pooled post-treatment faecal cultures showed larval percentages of 92 and 95 for Haemonchus and 8 and 5 for Cooperia in the faeces of calves treated with ivermectin and ricobendazole, respectively. This is the first reported case of Haemonchus parasiting cattle showing simultaneous resistance to avermectins and benzimidazole type anthelmintics.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to assess the efficiency of selection on the basis of response to artificial challenges in order to breed sheep resistant to natural infection. A short-term divergent selection process was designed to estimate the genetic parameters of these two traits. Two flocks, including 100 Romanov ram lambs each, were challenged in 1990 when they were 6 months old. One flock received three artificial infections with 20 000 third-stage Teladorsagia circumcincta larvae, at intervals of 7 weeks. Faecal egg counts (FEC) were performed on Days 22, 25 and 28 post infection (p.i.) and the animals were drenched on Day 28 p.i. The other flock was grazed for 5 months on a pasture contaminated with the same species. Faecal samples were taken from the lambs at similar ages. About 5 rams with the lowest FEC and 5 with the highest FEC were selected in each flock and mated with unselected ewes. Their offspring (200 animals) were challenged in 1992, half in the same way as their sires, and the other half by the other method. Because of a drought in the summer of 1990, it was necessary to repeat part of the experiment, and in 1992 the 5 and 8 rams with the lowest and highest FEC, respectively, were selected from the offspring challenged on the pasture in 1992 and were mated with unselected ewes. Their progeny (about 80 animals) were challenged in 1994, half by natural infection, half by artificial infection. The mean FEC of the flock increased from the first to the third artificial infection. The natural infection was highly variable in different years, reflecting the difficulty of assessing resistance using this mode of challenge. Genetic parameters were estimated using animal models and REML solutions. The repeatabilities of the FEC following artificial and natural infection were 0.49 and 0.70 respectively within a period of one week, and 0.22 and 0.41 respectively for periods separated by intervals of 7 weeks; the heritabilities of the single egg count were 0.22 and 0.38 respectively. The genetic correlation was 0.87: the FEC recorded under natural or artificial infection appear to depend on the same genetic potential.

Most studies on the effects of tanniferous plants on nematodes have examined forages but have neglected the woody plants. Therefore,in vitroeffects of extracts from 3 woody plants (Rubus fructicosus,Quercus robur,Corylus avellana) have been tested on trichostrongyles and compared to sainfoin, a legume forage. Because somein vivoresults indicated that the effects of tannins differed depending on the parasitic species and/or stages, the effects were measured on 3rd-stage larvae (L3) and adult worms ofTeladorsagia circumcincta,Haemonchus contortusandTrichostrongylus colubriformis. The effects of plant extracts varied according to the plant sources, the parasite species and stages. For the woody plants, significant inhibitory effects were obtained on both stages of abomasal species. Results forT. colubriformiswere more variable. Effects of sainfoin extracts were significant onT. colubriformisandH. contortusL3, and on abomasal adult worms. In order to assess the implications of tannins, polyethylene glycol (PEG), an inhibitor of tannins, was added to hazel tree, oak and sainfoin extracts. Without PEG, significant inhibitory effects on L3 and adult worms were confirmed. After addition of PEG, the larval migration and motility of adult worms were restored in most cases. These results confirm variations in effects depending on factors related to plants or parasites and suggest that tannins are partly responsible for the effects.

Abstract
A pregnant female Cape giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) died from an unknown cause in the Aitana Zoo, Alicante, Spain. Neither clinical signs nor macroscopic lesions were observed at necropsy. The alimentary tract was removed and examined for parasites. A total of 2 724 nematodes were found, including Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Trichostrongylus axei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Teladorsagia trifurcata, Marshallagia marshalli, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Spiculopteragia asymmetrica and Trichuris giraffae. Only T. giraffae and C. mentulatus have been previously reported from giraffes. The other nematodes are common in mouflons, fallow and red deer, which can usually be found in the same paddock as the giraffes in Aitana Zoo. Although its occurrence is unusual in this host, C. mentulatus was the most abundant nematode in our giraffe. This parasite has been related to disease, and even death, in several wild ruminants.

Abstract
The use of moxidectin (MXD) in the treatment of small lungworm infestation (Cystocaulus ocreatus, Muellerius capillaris, Neostrongylus linearis and Protostronglylus rufescens) in sheep, was evaluated. Twenty-one sheep naturally infested with small lungworms, were divided into three groups (n = 7) and treated as follows: group A with moxidectin 1% injectable solution at a dose rate of 0.2mgkg(-1) bodyweight, group B with moxidectin 0.1% oral drench at a dose rate of 0.2 mgkg(-1) bodyweight and group C being controls. Before treatment, mean faecal larval counts were 30.7, 21.1 and 26.7 lpg in group A, B and C, respectively; 14 days after treatment respective counts were 0.4, 2.3 and 63.0 lpg, (percentage reduction after moxidectin administration >96.0%); 60 days after treatment respective counts were 0.0, 0.0 and 26.4 lpg, (percentage reduction after moxidectin administration 100%). It is concluded that treatment of small lungworm infestation of sheep can be effected by using moxidectin.

Abstract
Three anthelmintic classes with distinct mechanisms of action are commercially available. Selection of nematode populations resistant to all these drugs has occurred, particularly in trichostrongyloid parasites of sheep. Anthelmintic resistance in cattle parasites has only recently been recognized and appears to be less pronounced, even though very similar species infect both hosts. To understand the bases for differences in the rate of resistance development in sheep versus cattle parasites, it is important to first demonstrate that the same kinds of resistance alleles exist in both. The benzimidazoles (BZ), which have been used for more than 40 years, were chosen as an example. BZ-sensitive (BZ(S)) and BZ-resistant (BZ(R)) nematodes that parasitize sheep have been distinguished at the molecular level by a single nucleotide change in the codon for amino acid 200 of a beta-tubulin gene, a switch from TTC (phenylalanine) to TAC (tyrosine). PCR primers were designed to completely conserved regions of trichostrongyloid beta-tubulin genes and were used to amplify DNA fragments from Haemonchus contortus (cDNA from a BZ(S) and a BZ(R) library) as positive controls. The technique was then extended to the cattle parasites, Cooperia oncophora and Ostertagia ostertagi (from genomic DNA). Sequence analysis proved the presence of amplified BZ(S) alleles in all three species and BZ(R) alleles in the BZ(R) population of H. contortus. Based on these data, nested PCR primers using the diagnostic T or A as the most 3' nucleotide were designed for each species. Conditions for selective PCR were determined. To demonstrate feasibility, genomic DNA was recovered from individual H. contortus L(3) larvae from both BZ(S) and BZ(R) populations. Genomic DNA was also isolated from >70 individual adult male C. oncophora collected from a cattle farm in New Zealand with reported BZ resistance. Allele-specific PCR discriminated among heterozygotes and homozygotes in both species. This method could find utility in studying the molecular epidemiology of BZ resistance in cattle parasites and for defining the variables that limit the development and spread of anthelmintic resistance in this host.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of gastric lesions and to provide diagnostic values for serum pepsinogen in non-infected pigs and in pigs with gastric disease. In an abattoir survey, the pepsinogen concentrations were measured in the serum from 62 non-infected pigs, 33 pigs with gastric lesions and 17 pigs infected with Hyostrongylus rubidus, using a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA). The mean (+/- SE) pepsinogen concentrations in the serum of non-infected pigs, in pigs with gastric ulcers, and in pigs with a heavy H. rubidus infection were 630.8 +/- 39.2 ng/ml, 1084.5 +/- 166.2 ng/ml and 1095.2 +/- 102.3 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). Because of the higher concentrations of pepsinogen in the blood of pigs with gastric ulcers or parasitic infections, it is suggested that the measurement of serum pepsinogen by RIA may be an effective biochemical approach to the diagnosis of chronic gastric disorders in pigs.

Abstract
Sheep were sensitized by weekly infections with Teladorsagia circumcincta over a 9-week period. After a 12-week rest, sheep were divided into four groups and killed without challenge or 3, 5 and 10 days post challenge (DPC) with 50000 L3. Recovery of challenge larvae from abomasal scrapings was highest at 3 DPC while no parasites were recovered by 10 DPC. Abomasal lymph nodes (ALN) of challenged sheep were significantly larger at 5 DPC, coinciding with an increase in the proportion of CD4 T cells and a decrease in CD21+ cells, probably reflecting the loss of CD21 from terminally differentiated antibody secreting cells. A significant increase was observed in gammadelta-TCR+ cells at 3 DPC in the ALN, while their number slightly decreased in the abomasal tissues throughout the challenge period. The number of tissue eosinophils was dramatically increased after challenge compared with the unchallenged controls, with a peak at 3 DPC, coinciding with the peak in larval recovery. CD4+ cells significantly increased in the abomasal tissues at 5 DPC, while no changes in globule leucocytes were observed until 10 DPC. Antibody-secreting cell probes (ASC-probes) generated from the ALN showed highest reactivity against larval antigens at 5 DPC. This reactivity was predominantly directed against regions between 90 and 100 kDa and 30-35 kDa in the L3 preparation and lower molecular weight antigens in the L4. No reactivity was observed against the adult extract. The 30-35 kDa antigen seemed to exist as a high molecular weight complex in L3 homogenate and was not susceptible to protease K treatment, suggesting it may be non-protein in nature.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of bovine anamnestic immunity on a range of parasitological variables. To this end, calves were primed with a single oral dose of 30 000 or 100 000 infective larvae (L3) ofCooperia oncophora, drenched with anthelmintic, maintained worm free in the following 2·5 months and subsequently re-infected with 100 000 L3. Parasitological profiles of low, intermediate, and high responders were compared. The reduction in establishment of the worms was shown by a lower worm burden and increased percentage of fourth-stage (L4) larvae. Worm length and fecundity were similarly reduced by both priming doses but, the speed by which the effect occurred differed between animals primed with 30 000 or 100 000 L3. The difference in establishment between the responder types demonstrates that the ability of intermediate responders to mount a more effective and faster immune response compared to low responders is sustained after secondary infection.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess whether there was a periparturient rise in the faecal egg output of a population of North African gazelles (Gazella dama mhorr) kept in captivity in Almeria, southern Spain. In one experiment faeces were collected from 47 female gazelles on three days in winter, in November and December 1995 and January 1996; in a second experiment faecal samples were collected from nine pregnant gazelles at weekly intervals from July 1996 to June 1997. The mean trichostrongylid faecal egg counts were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the periparturient gazelles than in the pregnant and non-pregnant animals only when the births took place in winter. Other factors, including the gazelle's age, its level of inbreeding, the number of previous births, and its trichostrongylid egg output at the beginning of the study did not affect whether it showed a periparturient rise. The parasites responsible for the rise were different in the two experiments.

Abstract
Substantial progress has been made in the last decade in identifying several antigens from Haemonchus contortus which, in their native form, stimulate useful levels of protective immunity (70-95% reductions in faecal egg output) in the ovine host. Much work has focussed on proteins/protein complexes expressed on the surface of the worm gut which are exposed to the blood meal, and, hence, antibody ingested with it. The antigens generally, but not in all cases, show protease activity and antibody is thought to mediate protective immunity by blocking the activity of enzymes involved in digestion within the worm. This review summarises the protective efficacy, as well as the biochemical and molecular properties, of the principal candidate antigens which are expressed in the gut of these parasites. Of course, such antigens will have to be expressed as recombinant proteins to be sufficiently cost-effective for use in a commercial vaccine and the current status of recombinant antigen expression is discussed with particular reference to conformation and glycosylation. There is a need for continued antigen definition even in the confines of gut antigens and potential targets can be selected from the rapidly expanding genome/EST datasets on the basis of predicted functional homology. Gene knockout technologies such as RNA interference have the potential to provide high throughput, rapid and inexpensive methods to define whether the protein product of a particular gene would be a suitable vaccine candidate.

Abstract
The ability of the nematode-killing fungus Duddingtonia flagrans to reduce number of infective larvae of three species of gastro-intestinal parasitic nematodes developing in dung was investigated in both goats and sheep. Groups of lambs and kids (12-20 weeks old) were given mono-specific infections of Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia (Teladorsagia) circumcincta or Trichostrongylus colubriformis. Following patency of the infections (t1) faecal samples were collected for determination of faecal nematode egg count (FEC) and culture of parasite larvae. Groups of animals were then dosed on 2 consecutive days with one of the two dose rates of the fungus (250,000 or 500,000 spores/kg liveweight). One (t2) and 5 (t3) days after the second dose of fungus samples were again collected for FEC and culture. The number of larvae recovered from the faecal cultures at t1 and t3 were used as controls to assess the efficacy of the experimental treatment at t2. Average efficacy was 78% with group means ranging from 40 to 93%. Dose rate of fungus appeared to influence efficacy against O. circumcincta but not against H. contortus or T. colubriformis. Overall, there were no differences in the efficacy of the fungus against any of the parasite species or in either host animal. The results of this trial indicate the potential use of this fungus as a broad spectrum anti-parasite agent for use in both goats and sheep.

Abstract
In the perspective to reduce the use of antiparasitic drugs, any interaction between the processes that control the development of parasite eggs into infective larval stages (L3) in dung and the activities of different dung-breeding organisms becomes of interest. The objective of the present study was to determine whether dung beetle activity affected the development of parasite larvae in cattle dung. Faeces containing eggs of parasites (predominantly Cooperia spp.) were pooled according to high (250-600 epg) or low (approx. 100 epg) egg counts. Experimental dung pats were formed for each category of faeces and to half of these pats, dung beetles (20 Aphodius rufipes, 20 A. scybalarius syn. rufus) were added and kept for 12 days at 21 degrees C (+/-1 degrees C) and 90% RH (+/-5% RH). Beetles were then removed and the pats were divided in two where half the pat was incubated for an additional 12 days at 21 degrees C (+/-1 degrees C) and 90% RH (+/-5% RH) and the other half was immediately analysed. A greater number of L3 were recovered from the dung subjected to beetle activity compared with control dung (P<0.001). However, following an additional 12 days incubation of the dung, similar numbers of L3 were recovered from beetle-affected dung with high egg counts, whereas there were significantly greater numbers of L3 derived from the control dung (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in L3 recovery in the two categories of pats (i.e. high and low nematode egg counts). The results indicate that activity by Aphodius spp. in fresh dung can optimise conditions for nematode development to the infective larval stage if favourable environmental conditions prevail. Such synergistic effect may be due to the fact that dung beetles used in this study are dung dwellers, i.e. no substantial amount of the dung is removed or burrowed as these beetles feed, lay their eggs and the larval development takes place in brood chambers inside the dung.
