Prior maximal exercise decreases pulmonary diffusing capacity during subsequent exercise

Pulmonary diffusion (DLCO) increases during exercise due to greater pulmonary capillary volume (Vc) and membrane diffusing capacity (DM). However, after heavy exercise there is a reduction in resting DLCO. It is unclear whether this post-exercise effect will attenuate the normal increase in DLCO, Vc and DM during subsequent exercise and whether this affects SpO2 (pulse oximeter). DLCO, Vc, DM, cardiac output and SpO2 were measured at rest, moderate (~70% VO2peak) and heavy (~90 VO2peak) exercise in 9 subjects during 2 sessions separated by ~90 min. DLCO, Vc and DM increased during exercise (P<0.05). DLCO (P<0.05) and Vc (P<0.10), but not DM or SpO2 were lower in session 2 compared to the first. Reductions in DLCO and Vc appeared to be smallest during rest (1-4%) and greatest at high-intensity exercise (8-20%), but the interaction was not significant. SpO2 decreased by 4.9% and 5.1% from rest to high-intensity exercise during the first and second exercise bout, but these changes were not different. These data confirm that a bout of high-intensity exercise reduces DLCO and Vc, and may indicate that these changes are exacerbated during subsequent high-intensity exercise. Despite these changes, SpO2 was not affected by previous exercise.

Hyaluronidase treatment of acute lymphedema in a mouse tail model

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hyaluronidase (HAase) on lymphedema using an acute mouse tail lymphedema model. Six-week-old mice served to produce acute lymphedema and were then either treated with HAase injection or used as operative controls. An additional group of unmanipulated normal mice was used for comparison. Tail volumes were measured for 23 days and histological changes examined. Western blot analysis was conducted to quantify lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor (LYVE)-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1, podoplanin, CD 44, and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor3 (VEGFR3) expression levels. The operative control group showed an increase in thickness of the dermis and subdermis, microlymphatic dilatation, and an increase in neutrophils. In contrast, the HAase treated group exhibited alleviation of inflammation evidenced by a decline in microlymphatic dilatation and neutrophils and an overall increase in microlymphatic vessels. Western blot analysis demonstrated that TNF-alpha and TGF-beta1 expression declined but CD44 expression increased in the HAase treated group. Levels of LYVE1, podoplanin, and VEGFR3 also increased significantly in the HAase group. Our results indicate that HAase treatment in the acute mouse tail model reduced lymphedema volume possibly through degradation of HA trafficking, which reduced inflammation and fibrosis in tissues and stimulated lymphangiogenesis.

Measurement of the D*(2010)+ meson width and the D*(2010)+ - D0 mass difference

We measure the mass difference Δm0 between the D*(2010)+ and the D0 and the natural linewidth Γ of the transition D*(2010)+ → D0π+. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies at and near the Υ(4S) resonance, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 477  fb(-1). The D0 is reconstructed in the decay modes D0 → K- π+ and D0 → K- π+ π- π+. For the decay mode D0 → K- π+ we obtain Γ = (83.4±1.7±1.5)  keV and Δm0 = (145425.6±0.6±1.7)  keV, [corrected] where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. For the D0 → K- π+ π- π+ mode we obtain Γ = (83.2±1.5±2.6)  keV and Δm0 = (145426.6±0.5±1.9)  keV. [corrected] The combined measurements yield Γ = (83.3±1.2±1.4)  keV and Δm0 = (145425.9±0.4±1.7)  keV; the width is a factor of approximately 12 times more precise than the previous value, while the mass difference is a factor of approximately 6 times more precise.

Search for CP violation in B0-B0 mixing using partial reconstruction of B0→D*- Xℓ+ νℓ and a kaon tag

We present results of a search for CP violation in B0- B0 mixing with the BABAR detector. We select a sample of B0→D*- Xℓ+ ν decays with a partial reconstruction method and use kaon tagging to assess the flavor of the other B meson in the event. We determine the CP violating asymmetry ACP≡[N(B0B0)-N(B0B0)]/[N(B0B0)+N(B0B0)]=(0.06±0.17(-0.32)(+0.38))%, corresponding to ΔCP=1-|q/p|=(0.29±0.84(-1.61)(+1.88))×10(-3).

Clinical characteristics and insulin independence of Koreans with new-onset type 2 diabetes presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis

BACKGROUND

We evaluated the incidence, characteristics and insulin independence of Koreans with new-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) initially presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

METHODS

We analysed clinical and biochemical data from diabetic patients presenting with DKA. They were classified into ketosis-prone diabetes (KPD) type 1A (KPD-T1A) (A+β-), type 1B (KPD-T1B) (A-β-), type 2A (KPD-T2A) (A+β+) or type 2B (KPD-T2B) (A-β+) according to the presence or absence of an autoantibody and β-cell reserve. Changes in therapy after insulin discontinuation were evaluated for up to 4 years. We also compared clinical and biochemical characteristics between newly diagnosed T2D patients presenting with DKA and previously diagnosed T2D patients presenting with DKA.

RESULTS

Among 60 newly diagnosed KPD patients, 18, 21 and 21 patients were classified as KPD-T1A, KPD-T1B and KPD-T2B, respectively. In the KPD-T2B group, both fasting and stimulated C-peptide were recovered over 6 months. After 4 years of DKA development, 75% of KPD-T2B subjects no longer required insulin. Compared with previously diagnosed T2D patients presenting with DKA, newly diagnosed KPD-T2B patients tended to be younger, more obese and showed better insulin secretory function after recovery from DKA.

CONCLUSIONS

New-onset T2D patients presenting with DKA was not uncommon among the Korean population. In contrast to previously diagnosed T2D patients presenting with DKA, who showed a progressive decrease in insulin secretory function, new-onset KPD-T2B patients recovered insulin secretory function over time, and insulin independence could be expected.

Deubiquitination of Dishevelled by Usp14 is required for Wnt signaling

Dishevelled (Dvl) is a key regulator of Wnt signaling both in the canonical and non-canonical pathways. Here we report the identification of a regulatory domain of ubiquitination (RDU) in the C-terminus of Dvl. Mutations in the RDU resulted in accumulation of polyubiquitinated forms of Dvl, which were mainly K63 linked. Small interfering RNA-based screening identified Usp14 as a mediator of Dvl deubiquitination. Genetic and chemical suppression of Usp14 activity caused an increase in Dvl polyubiquitination and significantly impaired downstream Wnt signaling. These data suggest that Usp14 functions as a positive regulator of the Wnt signaling pathway. Consistently, tissue microarray analysis of colon cancer revealed a strong correlation between the levels of Usp14 and β-catenin, which suggests an oncogenic role for Usp14 via enhancement of Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

Dysregulation of miR-106a and miR-591 confers paclitaxel resistance to ovarian cancer

Background:

MicroRNAs are noncoding regulatory RNAs strongly implicated in carcinogenesis, cell survival, and chemosensitivity. Here, microRNAs associated with chemoresistance in ovarian carcinoma, the most lethal of gynaecological malignancies, were identified and their functional effects in chemoresistant ovarian cancer cells were assessed.

Methods:

MicroRNA expression in paclitaxel (PTX)-resistant SKpac sublines was compared with that of the PTX-sensitive, parental SKOV3 ovarian cancer cell line using microarray and qRT–PCR. The function of differentially expressed microRNAs in chemoresistant ovarian cancer was further evaluated by apoptosis, cell proliferation, and migration assays.

Results:

Upregulation of miR-106a and downregulation of miR-591 were associated with PTX resistance in ovarian cancer cells and human tumour samples. Transfection with anti-miR-106a or pre-miR-591 resensitized PTX-resistant SKpac cells to PTX by enhancing apoptosis (23 and 42% increase), and inhibited their cell migration (43 and 56% decrease) and proliferation (64 and 65% decrease). Furthermore, ZEB1 was identified as a novel target gene of miR-591, and BCL10 and caspase-7 were target genes of miR-106a, as identified by immunoblotting and luciferase assay.

Conclusion:

MiR-106a and miR-591 have important roles in conferring PTX resistance to ovarian cancer cells. Modulation of these microRNAs resensitizes PTX-resistant cancer cells by targeting BCL10, caspase-7, and ZEB1.

Upper limb function: Comparison of postmenopause women with and without a history of early breast cancer

Background: Long term upper limb impairments following early breast cancer treatment are commonly reported in women years following surgery. However, the extent to which the symptoms are related to menopause and ageing, rather than cancer, has not been explored. This study aimed to compare upper limb strength, shoulder forward flexion range of motion (FF RoM), and presence of impairments in post menopausal women with and without a history of breast cancer. Methods: Community–dwelling age and body mass index (BMI)-matched post menopausal women with (n=40) and without a history of early breast cancer treatment (n=40) participated. Women with other types of cancer, metastatic cancer, and significant neurological or musculoskeletal history unrelated to breast cancer were excluded. Peak shoulder muscle strength was assessed using pneumatic resistance machines and FF RoM with a digital inclinometer. Participants completed the Disability of arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) questionnaire. Between groups comparison were made using analysis of co-variance with age and BMI as confounding variables. Results: Upper limb strength (206.22±45.0 vs. 225.36±86.9 Nm/kg, p=0.091) and FF RoM (166.75±7.9◦ vs. 170.14±6.9◦, p=0.259) were not significantly different between the study and the control group. There were no significant differences between the groups on any of the DASH sub scores (pain: 9.18±8.1 vs. 8.62±8.2, P=0.770). Conclusions: Upper limb impairments are often presumed to be a consequence of surgical procedures in women with breast cancer. However, some of the symptoms women perceive years following surgery may be related to the changes due to aging or menopause rather than cancer treatment.

Efficacy of a one-year exercise program to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women prescribed aromatase inhibitor therapy: An RCT

Background: The aim of this single blinded RCT was to determine the effect of exercise on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women prescribed an aromatase inhibitor (AI) for the treatment of breast cancer. Methods: 66 sedentary, postmenopausal women, median age of 54.5 years, with early breast cancer and receiving an aromatase inhibitor participated. Women were stratified for taking tamoxifen prior to AI, and randomised to either the exercise (n = 27) or control (n = 39) group. All participants received daily vitamin D (1000 IU) and calcium carbonate (1200 mg) supplements and a booklet from Osteoporosis Australia outlining the benefits of exercise in preventing osteoporosis. The exercise group attended a gym three times per week for one year, supervised at regular intervals by a personal trainer, and were contacted weekly regarding progress and progression. Training sessions comprised warm-up, impact training, and resistance training. The control group was contacted monthly to monitor health status and to receive their supply of vitamins. The primary outcome was total hip BMD measured with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer. The secondary outcomes included trochanteric, femoral neck, lumbar spine and whole body BMD and t-scores. Results: Intention-to-treat analysis revealed that the change in BMD was not significantly different between groups. At baseline, the mean (SD) total hip BMD in the control group was 0.892 (0.115) g/cm2 and 0.878 (0.112) g/cm2 at 1 yr. In contrast, hip BMD in the Exercise group was 0.918 (0.119) g/cm2 at baseline and 0.910 (0.113) g/cm2at 1 yr. The mean (SD) change for both groups was <1%. The mean T-score of the hip for Controls at baseline was -0.42 (0.94) and -0.53 (0.91) at 1 year. The baseline T-score for the Exercise group was -0.20 (0.95) and -0.26 (0.93) at one year. The average compliance with attendance for the exercise group was 71% but ranged from 20 to 100%. Compliance with vitamins for both groups was high. Conclusions: A one year exercise program did not provide additional benefit to bone density in women on AIs compared to receipt of calcium and vitamin D and advice to exercise. Assessment of the fatty liver index as an indicator of hepatic steatosis for predicting incident diabetes independently of insulin resistance in a Korean population

AIMS

Fatty liver disease, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, is considered to be the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, both closely associated with insulin resistance. Furthermore, fatty liver disease assessed by ultrasonography is known to be a predictor of the development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, it remains unclear whether fatty liver disease plays a role in the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes independently of insulin resistance. In this study, we investigated whether fatty liver disease assessed by the fatty liver index can predict the development of Type 2 diabetes independently of systemic insulin resistance.

METHODS

We examined the clinical and laboratory data of 7860 subjects without diabetes who underwent general routine health evaluations at the Asan Medical Center in 2007 and had returned for follow-up examinations in 2011. Fatty liver index was calculated using an equation that considers serum triglyceride levels, γ-glutamyltransferase, waist circumference and BMI.

RESULTS

During a 4-year period, 457 incident diabetes cases (5.8%) were identified. The odds ratios for the development of Type 2 diabetes were significantly higher in the group with a fatty liver index ≥ 60 (fatty liver index-positive) than in the group with a fatty liver index < 20 (fatty liver index-negative) after adjusting for various confounding variables including homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance. Odds ratios were significant regardless of the insulin resistance status at baseline.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that fatty liver index as a simple surrogate indicator of hepatic steatosis is valuable in identifying subjects at high risk for Type 2 diabetes. In addition, fatty liver disease itself contributes to the development of Type 2 diabetes independently of systemic insulin resistance.

Association of fatty acid composition in serum phospholipids with metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness

BACKGROUND AND AIM

We examined the association of fatty acid (FA) composition in serum phospholipids with the features of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and arterial stiffness.

METHODS

Korean men (n = 593, 30-79 yrs) were categorized based on the number of MetS risk factors (RFs) and measured for the markers of MetS, serum phospholipid FA composition and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), an index for the severity of arterial stiffness.

RESULTS

Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), baPWV, LDL size, and adiponectin were significantly altered corresponding to the number of MetS RFs. The proportions of total monounsaturated FA, palmitoleic acid (16:1), oleic acid (18:1ω-9) and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA, 20:3ω-6) in serum phospholipids, and DGLA/linoleic acid (LA) (20:3ω-6/18:2ω-6), deta9-desaturase activity (D9D-16: 16:1/16:0 and D9D-18: 18:1ω-9/18:0) significantly increased corresponding to the number of MetS RFs, but D5D (20:4ω-6/20:3ω-6) decreased. baPWV positively correlated with HOMA-IR, palmitic acid (16:0), oleic acid, D6D (18:3ω-6/18:2ω-6), DGLA/LA and D9D-18, and negatively with adiponectin, LDL size, LA, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6ω-3) and D5D. Multiple stepwise regression models revealed that baPWV was significantly influenced by systolic blood pressure, age, body weight, triglyceride and LA in serum phospholipids (R(2) = 0.378). Interestingly, baPWV (1419 ± 1 cm/s) and MetS (22%) were highest in individuals with lower proportion of LA (< 12.361%) and higher proportion of DGLA (≥ 1.412%) in serum phospholipid FAs.

CONCLUSION

The features of MetS significantly related to serum phosopholipid FA composition. Particularly, arterial stiffness was associated with LA additively together with DLGA. It may suggest a potential benefit of sufficient amounts of LA in serum or in diet can reduce cardiovascular risk.

Prospective transcriptomic pathway analysis of human lymphatic vascular insufficiency: identification and validation of a circulating biomarker panel

BACKGROUND

In our previous transcriptional profiling of a murine model, we have identified a remarkably small number of specific pathways with altered expression in lymphedema. In this investigation, we utilized microarray-based transcriptomics of human skin for an unbiased a priori prospective candidate identification, with subsequent validation of these candidates through direct serum assay. The resulting multi-analyte biomarker panel sensitively should sensitively discriminate human lymphedema subjects from normal individuals.

METHODS AND FINDINGS

We enrolled 63 lymphedema subjects and 27 normals in our attempt to discover protein analytes that can distinguish diseased individuals from controls. To minimize technical and biologically irrelevant variation, we first identified potential candidates by performing transcriptional microarray analysis on paired diseased and normal skin specimens sampled from the same individuals. We focused our attention on genes with corresponding protein products that are secreted and took these candidates forward to a protein multiplex assay applied to diseased and normal subjects. We developed a logistic regression-based model on an eventual group of six proteins and validated our system on a separate cohort of study subjects. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated to be 0.87 (95% CI : 0.75 to 0.97).

CONCLUSIONS

We have developed an accurate bioassay utilizing proteins representing four central pathogenetic modalities of the disease: lymphangiogenesis, inflammation, fibrosis, and lipid metabolism, suggesting that these proteins are directly related to the pathogenesis of the tissue pathology in lymphatic vascular insufficiency. Further studies are warranted to determine whether this newly-identified biomarker panel will possess utility as an instrument for in vitro diagnosis of early and latent disease; the ultimate applicability to risk stratification, quantitation of disease burden, and response to therapy can easily be envisioned.

Differential effects of colchicine in blood mononuclear cells of patients with Behçet disease in relation to colchicine responsiveness

BACKGROUND

Colchicine, a first-line drug for the treatment of Behçet disease (BD), inhibits caspase-1 activation and inflammatory cytokine production. However, therapeutic and preventive effects are not observed in some patients with BD.

OBJECTIVE

To explore whether the effects of colchicine on proinflammatory cytokine expression and cell death in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with BD are associated with responsiveness to colchicine.

METHODS

Activation of caspase-1, transcription and secretion of interleukin (IL)-1β, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-6, and release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in PBMCs isolated from healthy controls and patients with BD were analysed in the presence or absence of colchicine and upon stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus a caspase-1 activator.

RESULTS

Colchicine significantly modulated monosodium urate-induced IL-1β release, LPS-stimulated LDH release, and basal transcript levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in healthy controls and BD colchicine responders, but not in BD colchicine nonresponders. Notably, colchicine showed contrasting effects on LPS-stimulated IL-1β transcription, i.e. it increased in responders but decreased in nonresponders. Also, higher levels of TNF-α and IL-6 transcripts were observed in LPS-stimulated PBMCs from nonresponders compared with responders.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows different effects of colchicine on PBMCs from patients with BD according to their responsiveness to colchicine. Predicting responsiveness to colchicine in patients with BD may, therefore, be possible by examining alterations in IL-1β transcript levels in LPS-stimulated PBMCs after colchicine treatment.

Lacrimal drainage obstruction in gastric cancer patients receiving S-1 chemotherapy

BACKGROUND

This study was conducted to determine the incidence and clinical characteristics of lacrimal drainage obstruction (LDO) in patients receiving S-1 chemotherapy.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Consecutive 170 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative surgery and received adjuvant S-1 chemotherapy were enrolled. S-1 was administered orally (40 mg/m2 b.i.d. on days 1-28 every 6 weeks) for 1 year. Ophthalmologic examinations were carried out on patients complaining of epiphora.

RESULTS

Thirty-one patients (18%) developed epiphora. Among 31 patients, 25 underwent ophthalmologic examinations and 22 (88%) were diagnosed with LDO. The median time to the onset of LDO was 2.9 months. The most common site of obstruction was the nasolacrimal duct [86% (19/22)]; punctal [23% (5/22)] and canalicular obstruction [14% (3/22)] were also noted. In multivariate analysis, total gastrectomy [versus partial gastrectomy: hazard ratio (HR), 2.9; P=0.014] and creatinine clearance<50 ml/min (versus ≥50 ml/min: HR, 2.9; P=0.038) were independent risk factors for the development of LDO.

CONCLUSION

Considering the high incidence of LDO in patients receiving S-1 chemotherapy, oncologists should be alert to epiphora and cooperate with ophthalmologists in the early stages to improve the quality of life of patients and avoid more complicated ophthalmologic procedures.

New limits on interactions between weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons obtained with CsI(Tl) crystal detectors

New limits are presented on the cross section for weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering in the KIMS CsI(Tℓ) detector array at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The exposure used for these results is 24 524.3  kg·days. Nuclei recoiling from WIMP interactions are identified by a pulse shape discrimination method. A low energy background due to alpha emitters on the crystal surfaces is identified and taken into account in the analysis. The detected numbers of nuclear recoils are consistent with zero and 90% confidence level upper limits on the WIMP interaction rates are set for electron equivalent energies from 3 to 11 keV. The 90% upper limit of the nuclear recoil event rate for 3.6-5.8 keV corresponding to 2-4 keV in NaI(Tℓ) is 0.0098 counts/kg/keV/day, which is below the annual modulation amplitude reported by DAMA. This is incompatible with interpretations that enhance the modulation amplitude such as inelastic dark matter models. We establish the most stringent cross section limits on spin-dependent WIMP-proton elastic scattering for the WIMP masses greater than 20  GeV/c2.

First observation of B(s)(0) → J/ψη and B(s)(0) → J/ψη'

We report first observations of B(s)(0) → J/ψη and B(s)(0) → J/ψη'. The results are obtained from 121.4  fb(-1) of data collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions B(B(s)(0) → J/ψη)=[5.10±0.50(stat)±0.25(syst)(-0.79)(+1.14)(N(B(s)(*) B(s)(*))]×10(-4), and B(B(s)(0) → J/ψη')=[3.71±0.61(stat)±0.18(syst)(-0.57)(+0.83)(N(B(s)(*) B(s)(*))]×10(-4). The ratio of the two branching fractions is measured to be (B(B(s) → J/ψη'))/(B(B(s) → J/ψη))=0.73±0.14(stat)±0.02(syst).

A translational study "case report" on the small molecule "energy blocker" 3-bromopyruvate (3BP) as a potent anticancer agent: from bench side to bedside

The small alkylating molecule, 3-bromopyruvate (3BP), is a potent and specific anticancer agent. 3BP is different in its action from most currently available chemo-drugs. Thus, 3BP targets cancer cells' energy metabolism, both its high glycolysis ("Warburg Effect") and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. This inhibits/ blocks total energy production leading to a depletion of energy reserves. Moreover, 3BP as an "Energy Blocker", is very rapid in killing such cells. This is in sharp contrast to most commonly used anticancer agents that usually take longer to show a noticeable effect. In addition, 3BP at its effective concentrations that kill cancer cells has little or no effect on normal cells. Therefore, 3BP can be considered a member, perhaps one of the first, of a new class of anticancer agents. Following 3BP's discovery as a novel anticancer agent in vitro in the Year 2000 (Published in Ko et al. Can Lett 173:83-91, 2001), and also as a highly effective and rapid anticancer agent in vivo shortly thereafter (Ko et al. Biochem Biophys Res Commun 324:269-275, 2004), its efficacy as a potent anticancer agent in humans was demonstrated. Here, based on translational research, we report results of a case study in a young adult cancer patient with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, a bench side discovery in the Department of Biological Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine was taken effectively to bedside treatment at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt/Main Hospital, Germany. The results obtained hold promise for 3BP as a future cancer therapeutic without apparent cyto-toxicity when formulated properly.

Observation of D+ → K(+)η(') and search for CP violation in D+ → π(+)η(') decays

We report the first observation of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D(+)→K(+)η((')) using a 791 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The ratio of the branching fractions of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed relative to singly Cabibbo-suppressed D(+)→π(+)η((')) decays are B(D(+)→K(+)η)/B(D(+)→π(+)η)=(3.06±0.43±0.14)% and B(D(+)→K(+)η')/B(D(+)→π(+)η')=(3.77±0.39±0.10)%. From these, we find that the relative final-state phase difference between the tree and annihilation amplitudes in D(+) decays, δ(TA), is (72±9)° or (288±9)°. We also report the most precise measurements of CP asymmetries to date: A(CP)(D(+)→π(+)η)=(+1.74±1.13±0.19)% and A(CP)(D(+)→π(+)η')=(-0.12±1.12±0.17)%.

Search for CP violation in τ±→K(S)0π±ντ decays at Belle

We report on a search for CP violation in τ(±)→K(S)(0)π(±)ν(τ) decays using a data sample of 699 fb(-1) collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in four bins of the invariant mass of the K(S)(0)π(±) system and found to be compatible with zero with a precision of O(10(-3)) in each mass bin. Limits for the CP violation parameter Im(η(S)) are given at the 90% confidence level. These limits are |Im(η(S))| < 0.026 or better, depending on the parametrization used to describe the hadronic form factors, and improve upon previous limits by 1 order of magnitude.

Observation of X(3872)→J/ψγ and search for X(3872)→ψ'γ in B decays

We report a study of B→(J/ψγ)K and B→(ψ'γ)K decay modes using 772×10⁶ B ̅B events collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We observe X(3872)→J/ψγ and report the first evidence for χ(c2)→J/ψγ in B→(X_{c ̅cγ)K decays, while in a search for X(3872)→ψ'γ no significant signal is found. We measure the branching fractions, B(B(±)→X(3872)K(±))B(X(3872)→J/ψγ)=(1.78(-0.44)(+0.48)±0.12)×10(-6), B(B(±)→χ(c2)K(±))=(1.11(-0.34)(+0.36)±0.09)×10(-5), B(B(±)→X(3872)K(±))B(X(3872)→ψ'γ)<3.45×10⁶ (upper limit at 90% C.L.), and also provide upper limits for other searches.

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near √s = 10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e(+)e(-) annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered π(+)π(-) pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb(-1) data sample that contains 711 × 10(6) π(+)π(-) pairs and was collected at and near the Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.

Evidence for the suppressed decay B(-)→DK(-), D→K(+)π(-)

The suppressed decay chain B(-)→DK(-), D→K(+)π(-), where D indicates a D(¯)(0) or D(0) state, provides important information on the CP-violating angle ϕ(3). We measure the ratio R(DK) of the decay rates to the favored mode B(-)→DK(-), D→K(-)π(+) to be R(DK)=[1.63(-0.41)(+0.44)(stat)(-0.13)(+0.07)(syst)]×10(-2), which indicates the first evidence of the signal with a significance of 4.1σ. We also measure the asymmetry A(DK) between the charge-conjugate decays to be A(DK)=-0.39(-0.28)(+0.26)(stat)(-0.03)(+0.04)(syst). The results are based on the full 772×10(6) BB(¯) pair data sample collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector.

Search for CP violation in the decays D(0)→K(S)(0)P(0)

We have searched for CP violation in the decays D(0)→K(S)(0)P(0) where P(0) denotes a neutral pseudoscalar meson that is either a π(0), η, or η' using KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 791 fb(-1) collected with the Belle detector. No evidence of significant CP violation is observed. We report the most precise CP asymmetry measurement in the decay D(0)→K(S)(0)π(0) to date: A(CP)(D(0)→K(S)(0)π(0))=(-0.28±0.19±0.10)%. We also report the first measurements of CP asymmetries in the decays D(0)→K(S)(0)η and D(0)→K(S)(0)η': A(CP)(D(0)→K(S)(0)η)=(+0.54±0.51±0.16)% and A(CP)(D(0)→K(S)(0)η')=(+0.98±0.67±0.14)%, respectively.

Observation of B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(980) and evidence for B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(1370)

We report the observation of B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(980) and evidence for B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(1370), which are CP eigenstate decay modes. These results are obtained from 121.4 fb⁻¹ of data collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e⁻ collider. We measure the branching fractions B(B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(980); f₀(980)→π(+)π⁻)=(1.16(-0.19)(+0.31)(stat)(-0.17)(+0.15)(syst)(-0.18)(+0.26)(N(B(s)((*))B(s)((*)))))×10⁻⁴ with a significance of 8.4σ, and B(B(s)⁰→J/ψf₀(1370); f₀(1370)→π(+)π⁻)=(0.34(-0.14)(+0.11)(stat)(-0.02)(+0.03)(syst)(-0.05)(+0.08)(N(B(s)((*))B(s)((*)))))×10⁻⁴ with a significance of 4.2σ. The last error listed is due to uncertainty in the number of produced B(s)((*))B(s)((*)) pairs.

Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe commentary on the treatment of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is a putative new theory that has been suggested by some to have a direct causative relation with the symptomatology associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) [1]. The core foundation of this theory is that there is abnormal venous drainage from the brain due to outflow obstruction in the draining jugular vein and/or azygos veins. This abnormal venous drainage, which is characterised by special ultrasound criteria, called the “venous hemodynamic insufficiency severity score” (VHISS), is said to cause intracerebral flow disturbance or outflow problems that lead to periventricular deposits [2]. In the CCSVI theory, these deposits have a great similarity to the iron deposits seen around the veins in the legs in patients with chronic deep vein thrombosis. Zamboni, who first described this new theory, has promoted balloon dilatation to treat the outflow problems, thereby curing CCSVI and by the same token alleviating MS complaints. However, this theory does not fit into the existing bulk of scientific data concerning the pathophysiology of MS. In contrast, there is increasing worldwide acceptance of CCSVI and the associated balloon dilatation treatment, even though there is no supporting scientific evidence. Furthermore, most of the information we have comes from one source only. The treatment is called “liberation treatment,” and the results of the treatment can be watched on YouTube. There are well-documented testimonies by MS patients who have gained improvement in their personal quality of life (QOL) after treatment. However, there are no data available from patients who underwent unsuccessful treatments with which to obtain a more balanced view. The current forum for the reporting of success in treating CCSVI and thus MS seems to be the Internet. At the CIRCE office and the MS Centre in Amsterdam, we receive approximately 10 to 20 inquiries a month about this treatment. In addition, many interventional radiologists, who are directly approached by MS patients, contact the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) for advice. Worldwide, several centres are actively promoting and performing balloon dilatation, with or without stenting, for CCSVI. Thus far, no trial data are available, and there is currently no randomized controlled trial (RCT) in progress Therefore, the basis for this new treatment rests on anecdotal evidence and successful testimonies by patients on the Internet. CIRSE believes that this is not a sound basis on which to offer a new treatment, which could have possible procedure-related complications, to an often desperate patient population.

First measurement of inclusive B→Xsη decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B→Xsη decays, where Xs is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudoinclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657×10(6)BB pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. For MXs < 2.6 GeV/c2, we measure a branching fraction of [26.1±3.0(stat)-2.1+1.9(syst)-7.1+4.0(model)]×10(-5) and a direct CP asymmetry of ACP=-0.13±0.04-0.03+0.02. Over half of the signal occurs in the range MXs > 1.8 GeV/c2.

Interface ferromagnetism and orbital reconstruction in BiFeO3-La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 heterostructures

We report the formation of a novel ferromagnetic state in the antiferromagnet BiFeO3 at the interface with ferromagnet La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at Mn and Fe L(2,3) edges, we discovered that the development of this ferromagnetic spin structure is strongly associated with the onset of a significant exchange bias. Our results demonstrate that the magnetic state is directly related to an electronic orbital reconstruction at the interface, which is supported by the linearly polarized x-ray absorption measurement at the oxygen K edge.

Hydrogen partial pressures in a thermophilic acetate-oxidizing methanogenic coculture

Hydrogen partial pressures were measured in a thermophilic coculture comprised of a eubacterial rod which oxidized acetate to H(2) and CO(2) and a hydrogenotrophic methanogen, Methanobacterium sp. strain THF. Zinder and Koch (S. H. Zinder and M. Koch, Arch. Microbiol. 138:263-272, 1984) originally predicted, on the basis of calculations of Gibbs free energies of reactions, that the H(2) partial pressure near the midpoint of growth of the coculture should be near 4 Pa (ca. 4 x 10 atm; ca. 0.024 muM dissolved H(2)) for both organisms to be able to conserve energy for growth. H(2) partial pressures in the coculture were measured to be between 20 and 50 Pa (0.12 to 0.30 muM) during acetate utilization, approximately one order of magnitude higher than originally predicted. However, when DeltaG(f) (free energy of formation) values were corrected for 60 degrees C by using the relationship DeltaG(f) = DeltaH(f) - TDeltaS (DeltaH(f) is the enthalpy or heat of formation, DeltaS is the entropy value, and T is the temperature in kelvins), the predicted value was near 15 Pa, in closer agreement with the experimentally determined values. The coculture also oxidized ethanol to acetate, a more thermodynamically favorable reaction than oxidation of acetate to CO(2). During ethanol oxidation, the H(2) partial pressure reached values as high as 200 Pa. Acetate was not used until after the ethanol was consumed and the H(2) partial pressure decreased to 40 to 50 Pa. After acetate utilization, H(2) partial pressures fell to approximately 10 Pa and remained there, indicating a threshold for H(2) utilization by the methanogen. Axenic cultures of the acetate-oxidizing organism were combined with pure cultures of either Methanobacterium sp. strain THF or Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum DeltaH to form reconstituted acetate-oxidizing cocultures. The H(2) partial pressures measured in both of these reconstituted cocultures were similar to those measured in the original acetate-oxidizing rod coculture. Since M. thermoautotrophicum DeltaH did not use formate as a substrate, formate is not necessarily involved in interspecies electron transfer in this coculture.

Observation of B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) π+ and B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+ and measurement of the B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+ longitudinal polarization fraction

First observations of the B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) π+, B(s)(0) → D(s)(-) ρ+ and B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+ decays are reported together with measurements of their branching fractions: B(B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) π+) = [2.4(-0.4)(+0.5)(stat) ± 0.3(syst) ± 0.4(f(s))]×10(-3), B(B(s)(0) → D(s)(-) ρ+) = [8.5(-1.2)(+1.3)(stat) ± 1.1(syst) ± 1.3(f(s))]×10(-3) and B(B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+) = [11.9(-2.0)(+2.2)(stat) ± 1.7(syst) ± 1.8(f(s))]×10(-3) (f(s) = N(B(s)(*) B(s)(*))/N(bb)). From helicity-angle distributions, we measured the longitudinal polarization fraction in B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+ decays to be f(L)(B(s)(0) → D(s)(*-) ρ+) = 1.05(-0.10)(+0.08)(stat)(-0.04)(+0.03)(syst). These results are based on a 23.6  fb(-1) data sample collected at the Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- collider.

Search for CP violation in the decays D(s)+ --> KS0pi+ and D(s)+ --> KS0K+

We have searched for CP violation in the charmed meson decays D((s))(+) --> K(S)(0)pi(+) and D((s))(+) --> K(S)(0)K(+) using 673 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. No evidence for CP violation is observed. We report the most sensitive CP asymmetry measurements to date for these decays: A(CP)(D(+)-->K(S)(0)pi(+)) = (-0.71 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.20)%, A(CP)(D(s)(+) --> K(S)(0)pi(+)) = (+5.45 +/- 2.50 +/- 0.33)%, A(CP)(D(+) --> K(S)(0)K(+)) = (-0.16 +/- 0.58 +/- 0.25)%, and A(CP)(D(s)(+) --> K(S)(0)K(+)) = (+0.12 +/- 0.36 +/- 0.22)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Evidence for a new resonance and search for the Y(4140) in the gammagamma-->phiJ/psi process

The process gammagamma-->phiJ/psi is measured using a data sample of 825 fb{-1} collected with the Belle detector. A narrow peak of 8.8{-3.2}{+4.2} events, with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations including systematic uncertainty, is observed. The mass and natural width of the structure [named X(4350)] are measured to be [4350.6{-5.1}{+4.6}(stat)+/-0.7(syst)] MeV/c{2} and [13{-9}{+18}(stat)+/-4(syst)] MeV, respectively. The product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction to phiJ/psi is [6.7{-2.4}{+3.2}(stat)+/-1.1(syst)] eV for J{P}=0{+}, or [1.5{-0.6}{+0.7}(stat)+/-0.3(syst)] eV for J{P}=2{+}. No signal for the Y(4140)-->phiJ/psi structure reported by the CDF Collaboration in B-->K{+}phiJ/psi decays is observed, and limits of Gamma_{gammagamma}(Y(4140))B(Y(4140)-->phiJ/psi)<41 eV for J{P}=0;{+} or <6.0 eV for J{P}=2{+} are determined at the 90% C.L. This disfavors the scenario in which the Y(4140) is a D{s}{*+}D{s}{*-} molecule.

Observation of a charmoniumlike enhancement in the gammagamma-->omega(J)/psi process

We report the results of a search for a charmoniumlike state produced in the process gammagamma-->omegaJ/psi in the 3.9-4.2 GeV/c{2} mass region. We observe a significant enhancement, which is well described by a resonant shape with mass M=(3915+/-3+/-2) MeV/c{2} and total width Gamma=(17+/-10+/-3) MeV. This enhancement may be related to one or more of the three charmoniumlike states so far reported in the 3.90-3.95 GeV/c{2} mass region.

Use of human amniotic membrane wrap in reducing perineural adhesions in a rabbit model of ulnar nerve neurorrhaphy

The object of this experimental study was to assess the effect of wrapping human amniotic membrane around a repaired ulnar nerve in a rabbit model of perineural adhesion. Ulnar nerves from 10 white New Zealand rabbits were exposed bilaterally, dissected and repaired. Human amniotic membrane was then wrapped around the repair site in one limb with no such wrap in the neurorrhaphy of the contralateral limb. Three months later, the same nerves were re-explored and removed using microsurgical external neurolysis. Perineural adhesion around the ulnar nerve was evaluated by blinded surgical dissection and scored using a visual 4-point qualitative scale. Extent and grade of fibrosis around repair sites were measured microscopically (x 200) after Masson trichrome staining using measure of the depth of fibrosis and the grading criteria of adhesion. Quantitative morphometric analysis was also performed under light microscopy (x 200) with the aid of a digital counter and virtual slide imaging software (ScanScope T2, Vista, CA, USA). Human amniotic membrane wrapped nerves showed significantly less perineural adhesion and fibrosis than controls (P < 0.05). No nerve healing problems were encountered. This study suggests that human amniotic membrane application can reduce fibrosis and adhesion around neurorrhaphy sites in this animal model.

Measurement of |V{ub}| from inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays

We present the partial branching fraction for inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays and the corresponding value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V{ub}|, using a multivariate analysis method to access approximately 90% of the B-->X{u}lnu phase space. This approach dramatically reduces the theoretical uncertainties from the b-quark mass and nonperturbative QCD compared to all previous inclusive measurements. The results are based on a sample of 657x10{6} BB[over ] pairs collected with the Belle detector. We find that DeltaB(B-->X{u}lnu;p(l){*B}>1.0 GeV/c)=1.963x(1+/-0.088{stat}+/-0.081{syst})x10{-3}. Corresponding values of |V{ub}| are extracted using several theoretical calculations.

Assessment of breast cancer-related arm lymphedema--comparison of physical measurement methods and self-report

PURPOSE

To determine the relationship between physical methods of measuring lymphedema and self-reported swelling, their reliability, and standard error of measurement.

METHOD

Lymphedema in each arm of women with (n = 33) and without (n = 18) unilateral arm lymphedema, secondary to breast cancer was measured by self-report, bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), perometer, and the truncated cone method.

RESULTS

The physical measurement tools were highly reliable (ICC((2,1)): 0.94 to 1.00) with high concordance (r(c): 0.89 to 0.99). Self-report correlated moderately with physical measurements (r = 0.65 to 0.71) and was moderately reliable (ICC((2,1)): 0.70).

CONCLUSIONS

Lymphedema assessment methods are concordant and reliable but not interchangeable.

Sewage sludge reduction and system optimization in a catalytic ozonation process

The main objective of this study was to suggest a feasible, effective process for the reduction of sewage sludge using ozone oxidation catalysed by metal ion. A series of lab-scale experiments was conducted to select a suitable catalyst and its proper dose to achieve optimum sludge reduction. Using a central composite design under response surface methodology (RSM), system optimization with respect to sludge reduction and cost-effectiveness was performed by varying the independent parameters: dosages of ozone and ions. Five metal ions, Mn2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, CU2+, and Al3+1, were tested, and the manganese ion showed the highest sludge reduction, as measured by a decrease in total suspended solids. The ozone/Mn combination achieved approximately twice as much sludge reduction as the ozonation alone. Furthermore, the Mn dose of 10 mg/g-TS (total solids) resulted in the highest sludge reduction efficiency among the different doses, which ranged from 0 to 20 mg-Mn/g-TS. The predicted efficiency of sewage sludge reduction using the RSM was found to agree well with the experimental results, and the statistical analyses predicted optimum ranges for the doses of ozone and Mn ions, taking into account the overall cost for sewage sludge treatment.

Bilateral six-hydroxydopamine administration to PFC prevents the expression of behavioral sensitization to methylphenidate

Psychostimulants like amphetamine and methylphenidate (MPD) are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is marked by developmentally inappropriate inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Neuropsychological analyses indicate that ADHD patients are impaired on tasks of behavioral inhibition, reward reversal, and working memory, which are functions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and are modulated by the mesocortical dopamine (DA) system. Non-specific electrical lesioning of PFC eliminated the expression of behavioral sensitization elicited by chronic MPD administration. Behavioral sensitization is the progressive augmentation of locomotor activity as a result of repetitive (chronic) exposure to the drug. It is believed that the sensitization to chronic drug treatment is caused due to an increase in DA in the mesocorticolimbic DA system, which includes the PFC. Therefore, this study investigated the role of PFC DA in mediating the behavioral sensitization to repeated administration of MPD in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. On experimental day (ED) 1, the behavior was recorded post-saline injection. On ED 2, the rats were divided into three groups--control, sham and bilateral 6-OHDA treated group; and the sham and 6-OHDA treated groups underwent respective surgeries. After 5 days of rest following surgery, the post-surgery baseline was recorded on ED 8 following a saline injection. All three groups received 2.5 mg/kg MPD for 6 days (from ED 9 to ED 14), followed by a 3-day washout period (ED 15 to ED 18). On ED 19, a rechallenge injection of 2.5 mg/kg MPD was given and locomotor activity was recorded. It was found that the 6-OHDA lesion group failed to exhibit behavioral sensitization to MPD. The involvement of the dopaminergic afferents of PFC in behavioral sensitization to MPD is discussed.

Measurement of the differential branching fraction and forward-backward asymmetry for B --> K(*)l+l-

We study B --> K(*)l+l- decays (l = e, mu) based on a data sample of 657 x 10(6) BB pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We report the differential branching fraction, isospin asymmetry, K* polarization, and the forward-backward asymmetry (A(FB)) as functions of q2 = M(ll)(2)c2. The fitted A(FB) spectrum exceeds the standard model expectation by 2.7 standard deviations. The measured branching fractions are B(B --> K*l+l-) = (10.7(-1.0)(+1.1) +/- 0.9) x 10(-7) and B(B --> Kl+l-) = (4.8(-0.4)(+0.5) +/- 0.3) x 10(-7), where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic, with the muon to electron ratios R(K*) = 0.83 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.08 and R(K) = 1.03 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.06.

Observation of the doubly cabibbo-suppressed decay D_{s};{+}-->K;{+}K;{+}pi;{-}

We report the first observation of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D_{s};{+}-->K;{+}K;{+}pi;{-} using 605 fb;{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e;{+}e;{-} collider. The branching ratio with respect to its Cabibbo-favored counterpart B(D_{s};{+}-->K;{+}K;{+}pi;{-})/B(D_{s};{+}-->K;{+}K;{-}pi;{+}) is (0.229+/-0.028+/-0.012)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report a significantly improved measurement of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D;{+}-->K;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-}, with a branching ratio B(D;{+}-->K;{+}pi;{+}pi;{-})/B(D;{+}-->K;{-}pi;{+}pi;{+})=(0.569+/-0.018+/-0.014)%.

Percutaneous antegrade ureteric stent removal using a rigid alligator forceps

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of percutaneous antegrade ureteric stent removal using a rigid alligator forceps. Twenty patients were included in our study. Indications for ureteric stent insertion included stone disease (n = 7), malignancy (n = 8) and transplant anastomotic strictures (n = 5). Stent retrieval was carried out for proximal stent placement/migration in seven patients and encrustation in the remaining 13. Twenty-two stents were successfully retrieved in 20 patients. There was one technical failure (5%). There were no major complications. We had four minor complications, which included nephrostomy site pain (n = 2), periprocedural sepsis (n = 1) and a small urinoma (n = 1). All patients settled with conservative management. Percutaneous radiologically guided antegrade ureteric stent removal with an alligator forceps is safe and effective, particularly when initial surgical removal has failed.

Measurement of the Decay B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-)pi;(+) and Evidence for B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-/+)K;(+/-) in e;(+)e;(-) Annihilation at sqrt[s] approximately 10.87 GeV

We have studied B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-)pi;(+) and B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-/+)K;(+/-) decays using 23.6 fb;(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e;(+)e;(-) collider. This highly pure B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-)pi;(+) sample is used to measure the branching fraction, B(B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-)pi;(+))=[3.67_(-0.33);(+0.35)(stat)-0.42+0.43(syst)+/-0.49(f_(s))]x10;(-3) (f_(s)=N_(B_(s);((*))B[over ]_(s);((*)))/N_(bb[over ])) and the fractions of B_(s);(0) event types at the Upsilon(5S) energy, in particular N_(B_(s);(*)B[over ]_(s);(*))/N_(B_(s);((*))B[over ]_(s);((*)))=(90.1_(-4.0);(+3.8)+/-0.2)%. We also determine the masses M(B_(s);(0))=(5364.4+/-1.3+/-0.7) MeV/c;(2) and M(B_(s);(*))=(5416.4+/-0.4+/-0.5) MeV/c;(2). In addition, we observe B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-/+)K;(+/-) decays with a significance of 3.5sigma and measure B(B_(s);(0)-->D_(s);(-/+)K;(+/-))=[2.4_(-1.0);(+1.2)(stat)+/-0.3(syst)+/-0.3(f_(s))]x10;(-4).

Enhanced bio-energy recovery in a two-stage hydrogen/methane fermentation process

A two-stage hydrogen/methane fermentation process has emerged as a feasible engineering system to recover bio-energy from wastewater. Hydrogen-producing bacteria (HPB) generate hydrogen from readily available carbohydrates, and organic acids produced during the hydrogen fermentation step can be degraded to generate methane in the following step. Three strong acids, HCl, H(2)SO(4), and HNO(3), were tested to determine the appropriate pre-treatment method for enhanced hydrogen production. The hydrogen production rates of 230, 290, and 20 L/kg(-glucose)/day was observed for the sludge treated with HCl, H(2)SO(4), and HNO(3), respectively, indicating that the acid pre-treatment using either HCl or H(2)SO(4) resulted in a significant increase in hydrogen production. The fluorescent in situ hybridization method indicated that the acid pre-treatment selectively enriched HPB including Clostridium sp. of cluster I from inoculum sludge. After hydrogen fermentation was terminated, the sludge was introduced to a methane fermentation reactor. This experiment showed methane production rates of 100, 30, and 13 L/kg(-glucose)/day for the sludge pre-treated with HCl, H(2)SO(4), and HNO(3), respectively, implying that both sulfate and nitrate inhibited the activity of methane-producing bacteria. Consequently, the acid pre-treatment might be a feasible option to enhance biogas recovery in the two-stage fermentation process, and HCl was selected as the optimal strong acid for the enrichment of HPB and the continuous production of methane.

Evidence for neutral B meson decays to omegaK*0

We present the results of a study of the charmless vector-vector decay B0-->omegaK*0 with 657 x 10(6) BB pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction to be B(B0-->omegaK*0) = [1.8+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.3(syst)]x 10(-6) with 3.0sigma significance. We also perform a helicity analysis of the omega and K*0 vector mesons, and obtain the longitudinal polarization fraction fL(B0-->omegaK*0) = 0.56+/-0.29(stat) -0.08(+0.18)(syst). Finally, we measure a large nonresonant branching fraction B[B0-->omegaK+pi(-);M Kpi in(0.755,1.250) GeV/c2] = [5.1+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.7(syst)]x 10(-6) with a significance of 9.5sigma.
