Abstract
BACKGROUND Three-dimensional (3D) imaging has facilitated liver resection with excision of hepatic veins by estimating the liver volume of portal and hepatic venous territories. However, 3D imaging cannot be used for real-time navigation to determine the liver transection line. This study assessed the value of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging with hepatic vein clamping for navigation during liver transection. METHODS Consecutive patients who underwent liver resection with excision of major hepatic veins between 2012 and 2013 were evaluated using ICG fluorescence imaging after clamping veins and injecting ICG. Regional fluorescence intensity (FI) values of non-veno-occlusive regions (FINon ), veno-occlusive regions (FIVO ) and ischaemic regions (FIIS ) were calculated using luminance analysing software. RESULTS Of the 21 patients, ten, four and seven underwent limited resection, monosegmentectomy/sectionectomy and hemihepatectomy respectively, with excision of major hepatic veins. Median veno-occlusive liver volume was 80 (range 30-458) ml. Fluorescence imaging visualized veno-occlusive regions as territories with lower FI compared with non-veno-occlusive regions, and ischaemic regions as territories with no fluorescence after intravenous ICG injection. Median FIIS /FINon was lower than median FIVO /FINon (0·22 versus 0·59; P = 0·002). There were no deaths in hospital or within 30 days, and only one major complication. CONCLUSION ICG fluorescence imaging with hepatic vein clamping visualized non-veno-occlusive, veno-occlusive and ischaemic regions. This technique may guide liver transection by intraoperative navigation, enhancing the safety and accuracy of liver resection.

Abstract
Background
Paclitaxel (PTX) is a standard treatment for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and it is often used as adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for patients with early-stage disease. Nanoparticle albumin-bound (Nab)-PTX was also effective in patients with metastatic and early-stage. A comparison of weekly and triweekly nab-PTX regimens suggested that weekly nab-PTX resulted in superior progression-free survival. However, the optimal dose and schedule of weekly nab-PTX have not been determined. The efficacy and tolerability of epirubicin/cyclophosphamide (EC) followed by weekly nab-PTX (125 mg/m2) ± trastuzumab in node-positive breast cancer was determined in our previous trial. A high pathologic complete response (pCR) rate was obtained in HER2-positive patients. However, because nab-PTX administration was frequently postponed and discontinued, the optimal dose needs to be determined. In the previous trial, the median relative dose intensity of nab-PTX was 80% among patients with pCR. Therefore the dose of nab-PTX was reduced by 20% in this newly designed trial.
Trial design
This phase II trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of neoadjuvant EC followed by weekly nab-PTX with trastuzumab in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Patients will receive 4 cycles of epirubicin (90 mg/m2) and cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m2) every 3 weeks, followed by 4 cycles of nab-PTX (100 mg/m2) on days 1, 8, and 15, over a 28-day cycle. Fifteen cycles of trastuzumab (2 mg/kg, loading dose: 4 mg/kg) will be added to the nab-PTX regimen.
Eligibility criteria
Surgery and chemotherapy-naïve patients with pathologically confirmed T2-4 N0-3 invasive breast cancer, as diagnosed by core needle biopsy, are included. Eligibility criteria include age 20–70 years, a performance status of 0–2, and adequate organ function.
Specific aims
The primary endpoint is the pCR rate in the breast and axilla. Secondary endpoints include the breast conservation rate, toxicities, relative dose intensities, feasibility, and overall survival. A pCR is defined as the disappearance of invasive cancer cells, including in the axilla; residual intraductal cancer is acceptable.
Statistical methods
The sample size was calculated using the Simon method, with a type I error of 5% and a study power of 80%. The expected rate of pCR is 72% with a threshold pCR rate of 45%. The required number of patients was estimated to be 25.
Present and target accrual
Patient accrual within two medical centers began in May 2014. A final study population of 30 patients is expected (Trial registration: UMIN000013886).

Abstract
Background
The meta-analysis of the Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group (EBCTCG) revealed that whole-breast irradiation after breast conserving surgery (BCS) decreased ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) and breast cancer-related death. However, elderly patients can find daily hospital attendance difficult, and their IBTR risk is low. A randomized control trial was performed in women aged ≥70 years with hormone-positive breast cancer to investigate the usefulness of breast-conserving therapy without irradiation (Hughes et al. N Engl J Med 2004). Since September 2001, we have offered BCS plus hormone therapy without irradiation in patients who satisfy the following criteria: age ≥60 years; pathologically node negative, hormone-positive breast cancer; a negative surgical margin; and no lymphovascular invasion. We assessed prognosis in patients who chose this option.
Patients and methods
Between September 2001 and December 2014, 219 patients met the inclusion criteria; 90 and 129 patients underwent BCS plus hormone therapy with or without irradiation, respectively. The cumulative IBTR incidence and overall survival (OS) for the groups was evaluated. A negative surgical margin was defined as a margin of ≥5 mm.
Results
The median ages at operation were 73 years (range, 60–88 years) and 65 years (range, 60–80 years) for the without and with irradiation groups, respectively (p <0.001). There were no significant differences in tumor size, lymph node metastasis, or adjuvant therapy between the groups. The median follow-up duration is presently 4.6 years. IBTR was observed in 5 (3.9%) and 1 (1.1%) patient(s) in the without and with irradiation groups, respectively (p = 0.192). The 5-year IBTR cumulative incidences were 0.9% and 2.2%, and the 10-year were 6.7% and 2.2%, for the without and with irradiation groups, respectively (p = 0.390). The 5-year OS rates were 93.8% and 98.5%, and the 10-year OS rates were 89.7% and 94.0 for the without and with irradiation groups, respectively (p = 0.205).
Conclusion
BCS plus hormone therapy without irradiation in elderly patients is an appropriate option.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric living donor liver transplant (LDLT) patients sometimes develop graft fibrosis after non-recurrent diseases such as biliary atresia (BA). Donor-specific antibodies (DSA) have recently been shown to play a possible role in graft damage after liver transplantation. We report the impact of DSA on pediatric LDLT for BA patients. METHODS Patients under age 18 years who received LDLT for BA at our institution and who had at least 5 years' follow-up were identified, and 23 were eventually enrolled in this study. Pathological findings were assessed with the use of the last available biopsy. Patients were divided into 2 groups, DSA-positive and DSA-negative. Graft fibrosis after LDLT was assessed according to DSA groups. RESULTS The mean patient age at transplant was 2.6 years. The mean time to the last available biopsy after LDLT was 8.2 years (4.8-15.6 years); 6 patients (26%) showed no fibrosis, whereas fibrosis was graded as F1, F2, or F3 in 8 patients (35%), 8 patients (35%), and 1 patient, respectively. DSA were observed in 12 patients (52%). Moderate graft fibrosis (F2 and F3) was found in 7 (58%) of the DSA-positive group, but only 2 (18%) of the DSA-negative group, showing a statistically significant difference (P < .05). Pre-transplant cross-matching was performed in 17 patients. The 2 patients with a positive cross-match were DSA-positive. Six cross-match-negative patients developed de novo DSA after LDLT. CONCLUSIONS Graft fibrosis was observed after LDLT for BA during long-term follow-up, more commonly in DSA-positive patients. DSA may play a role in fibrosis formation.

Abstract
The association between mechanical stimulation and chondrocyte homeostasis has been reported. However, the participation of PTHrP (parathyroid-hormone-related protein) in the mechano-regulation of chondrocyte metabolism remains unclear. We determined whether mechanical stimulation of chondrocytes induces the expression of PTHrP and, further, whether the mechano-modulation of PTHrP is dependent on the maturational status of chondrocytes. Cyclic mechanical strain was applied to rat growth plate chondrocytes at the proliferating, matrix-forming, and hypertrophic stages at 30 cycles/min. Cyclic mechanical strain significantly increased PTHrP mRNA levels in chondrocytes at the proliferating and matrix-forming stages only. The induction of PTHrP was dependent on loading magnitude at the proliferating stage. Using specific ion channel blockers, we determined that mechano-induction of PTHrP was inhibited by nifedipine, a Ca2+ channel blocker. These results suggest that mechanical induction of PTHrP possibly provides the environment for greater chondrocyte replication and matrix formation that would subsequently affect cartilage formation.

Abstract
We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic v_{2} and quadrangular v_{4} flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between v_{2} and triangular v_{3} flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, ampt, and hijing models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract
This study investigated whether an intestinal epithelial culture method can be applied to mouse and human esophageal cultures. The esophagi harvested from 1-day-old mice and adult humans were maintained in collagen gels. A commercially available culture medium for human embryonic stem cells was used for the human esophageal culture. We discovered that the intestinal epithelial culture method can be successfully applied to both mouse and human esophageal cultures. The long-term cultured esophageal organoids were rod-like luminal structures lined with myofibroblasts. We discovered that regeneration of the esophageal mucosal surface can be almost completely achieved in vitro, and the advantage of this method is that organoid cultures may be generated using host-derived fibroblasts as a niche. This method is a promising tool for mouse and human research in intestinal biology, carcinogenesis, and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
Idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS) is an acute lung dysfunction of non-infectious aetiology and a severe complication following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Recently, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) updated the concept of IPS and extended the concept to a wider range; it defined IPS as "an idiopathic syndrome of pneumopathy after HSCT, with evidence of widespread alveolar injury and in which infectious aetiologies and cardiac dysfunction, acute renal failure, or iatrogenic fluid overload have been excluded." The ATS also categorised the presumed site of primary tissue injury into three patterns (pulmonary parenchyma, vascular endothelium, and airway epithelium), each of which has several entities. Since the therapeutic strategies for IPS are clearly different from those of infectious diseases, and therapeutic delay causes a poor prognosis, radiologists should be aware of some characteristic HRCT findings of IPS, which includes a wide spectrum of entities. In this article, the characteristic HRCT findings of these entities, including acute interstitial pneumonia/acute respiratory distress syndrome, eosinophilic pneumonia, non-cardiogenic capillary leak syndrome, diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, transfusion-related acute lung injury, organising pneumonia, and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, are shown.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the high-resolution computed tomography (CT) findings of primary lung cancer with cavitation and compare the findings in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS The high-resolution CT findings of tumours with cavitation were retrospectively evaluated in 60 patients. Forty-seven of the lesions were diagnosed as adenocarcinomas; 13 were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinomas. The diameters of the tumour and cavity, the maximum thickness of the cavity wall, shape of the cavity wall, the number of cavities, and the presence of ground-glass opacity, bronchial obstruction, intratumoural bronchiectasis, emphysema, and honeycombing were evaluated. The mechanisms of cavity formation were examined according to the pathological features. RESULTS The maximum thickness of the cavity wall was significantly greater in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas (p=0.002). Ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis were significantly more common in adenocarcinomas than in squamous cell carcinomas (p<0.001 and p=0.040, respectively). Regarding the pathological findings, intratumoural bronchiectasis with or without alveolar wall destruction contributed to a significant difference between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (p<0.001; odds ratio [OR], 20.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.87-107.10). CONCLUSION The cavity wall tends to be thicker in squamous cell carcinomas than in adenocarcinomas. The presence of ground-glass opacity and intratumoural bronchiectasis is strongly suggestive of adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) contributes to a morbidity-inducing systemic Inflammatory response after cardiac surgery. We compared this response in patients receiving coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with (CPB group; n = 7) or without (off-pump group; n = 8) the Minimal Extracorporeal Circulation (MECC®) system. Serum concentrations of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, soluble TNF receptors, pro- and anti-inflammatory interleukins (ILs) and other myocardial injury markers were measured after anaesthetic induction, at 1 h, 4 h and 24 h after completing all anastomoses or serially. Soluble TNF receptor type I (sTNFRI) and IL-8 peaked early after CABG in both groups and did not decline. Serum sTNFRI was significantly higher in the CPB compared with the off-pump group at 1 h, whereas IL-8 was significantly lower in the CPB group throughout. The MECC® system, therefore, produces an equivalent acute cytokine response and degree of myocardial injury to off-pump CABG, and may be useful when CABG cannot be performed without CPB.

Abstract
The serine protease inhibitors, aprotinin and 6-amidino-2-naphthyl-p-guanidinobenzoate (Futhan), showed striking antiviral activity in the plaque assay of the canine kidney (MDCK) cell-WSN strain system. Anti-cathepsin B IgG antibody/showed the greatest inhibitory effect on plaque formation, followed by anti-factor X antibody and then anti-plasminogen antibody. Anti-cathepsin B antibody inhibited the proteolytic cleavage of haemagglutinin (HA). These results suggest that a serine protease-like enzyme and the other protein that binds to anti-cathepsin B antibody may be involved in the process of WSN HA cleavage on the membrane surface of MDCK cells.

Abstract
The pseudorapidity density of charged particles, dN_{ch}/dη, at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions has been measured at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. For the 5% most central collisions, we measure a value of 1943±54. The rise in dN_{ch}/dη as a function of sqrt[s_{NN}] is steeper than that observed in proton-proton collisions and follows the trend established by measurements at lower energy. The increase of dN_{ch}/dη as a function of the average number of participant nucleons, ⟨N_{part}⟩, calculated in a Glauber model, is compared with the previous measurement at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A constant factor of about 1.2 describes the increase in dN_{ch}/dη from sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 to 5.02 TeV for all centrality classes, within the measured range of 0%-80% centrality. The results are also compared to models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.

Abstract
We report on the first measurement of an excess in the yield of J/ψ at very low transverse momentum (p_{T}<0.3 GeV/c) in peripheral hadronic Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV, performed by ALICE at the CERN LHC. Remarkably, the measured nuclear modification factor of J/ψ in the rapidity range 2.5<y<4 reaches about 7 (2) in the p_{T} range 0-0.3 GeV/c in the 70%-90% (50%-70%) centrality class. The J/ψ production cross section associated with the observed excess is obtained under the hypothesis that coherent photoproduction of J/ψ is the underlying physics mechanism. If confirmed, the observation of J/ψ coherent photoproduction in Pb-Pb collisions at impact parameters smaller than twice the nuclear radius opens new theoretical and experimental challenges and opportunities. In particular, coherent photoproduction accompanying hadronic collisions may provide insight into the dynamics of photoproduction and nuclear reactions, as well as become a novel probe of the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract
This paper presents a new correlative bioimaging technique using Y2O3:Tm, Yb and Y2O3:Er, Yb nanophosphors (NPs) as imaging probes that emit luminescence excited by both near-infrared (NIR) light and an electron beam. Under 980 nm NIR light irradiation, the Y2O3:Tm, Yb and Y2O3:Er, Yb NPs emitted NIR luminescence (NIRL) around 810 nm and 1530 nm, respectively, and cathodoluminescence at 455 nm and 660 nm under excitation of accelerated electrons, respectively. Multimodalities of the NPs were confirmed in correlative NIRL/CL imaging and their locations were visualized at the same observation area in both NIRL and CL images. Using CL microscopy, the NPs were visualized at the single-particle level and with multicolour. Multiscale NIRL/CL bioimaging was demonstrated through in vivo and in vitro NIRL deep-tissue observations, cellular NIRL imaging, and high-spatial resolution CL imaging of the NPs inside cells. The location of a cell sheet transplanted onto the back muscle fascia of a hairy rat was visualized through NIRL imaging of the Y2O3:Er, Yb NPs. Accurate positions of cells through the thickness (1.5 mm) of a tissue phantom were detected by NIRL from the Y2O3:Tm, Yb NPs. Further, locations of the two types of NPs inside cells were observed using CL microscopy.

Abstract
Measurements of charged jet production as a function of centrality are presented for p-Pb collisions recorded at [Formula: see text] TeV with the ALICE detector. Centrality classes are determined via the energy deposit in neutron calorimeters at zero degree, close to the beam direction, to minimise dynamical biases of the selection. The corresponding number of participants or binary nucleon-nucleon collisions is determined based on the particle production in the Pb-going rapidity region. Jets have been reconstructed in the central rapidity region from charged particles with the anti-[Formula: see text] algorithm for resolution parameters [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in the transverse momentum range 20 to 120 GeV/c. The reconstructed jet momentum and yields have been corrected for detector effects and underlying-event background. In the five centrality bins considered, the charged jet production in p-Pb collisions is consistent with the production expected from binary scaling from pp collisions. The ratio of jet yields reconstructed with the two different resolution parameters is also independent of the centrality selection, demonstrating the absence of major modifications of the radial jet structure in the reported centrality classes.

Abstract
The production of K[Formula: see text](892)[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text](1020) mesons has been measured in p-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 5.02 TeV. K[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are reconstructed via their decay into charged hadrons with the ALICE detector in the rapidity range [Formula: see text]. The transverse momentum spectra, measured as a function of the multiplicity, have a p[Formula: see text] range from 0 to 15 GeV/c for K[Formula: see text] and from 0.3 to 21 GeV/c for [Formula: see text]. Integrated yields, mean transverse momenta and particle ratios are reported and compared with results in pp collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 7 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 2.76 TeV. In Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions, K[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] probe the hadronic phase of the system and contribute to the study of particle formation mechanisms by comparison with other identified hadrons. For this purpose, the mean transverse momenta and the differential proton-to-[Formula: see text] ratio are discussed as a function of the multiplicity of the event. The short-lived K[Formula: see text] is measured to investigate re-scattering effects, believed to be related to the size of the system and to the lifetime of the hadronic phase.

Abstract
We report on the inclusive production cross sections of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text](1S), [Formula: see text](2S) and [Formula: see text](3S), measured at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector in [Formula: see text] collisions at a center-of-mass energy [Formula: see text] TeV. The analysis is based on data collected at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb[Formula: see text]. Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum [Formula: see text] and rapidity y, over the [Formula: see text] ranges [Formula: see text] GeV/c for [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] GeV/c for all other resonances, and for [Formula: see text]. The cross sections, integrated over [Formula: see text] and y, and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]b, [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]b, [Formula: see text] nb, [Formula: see text] nb and [Formula: see text] nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. These values agree, within at most [Formula: see text], with measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration in the same rapidity range.

Abstract
We report the first results of elliptic (v_{2}), triangular (v_{3}), and quadrangular (v_{4}) flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the central pseudorapidity region |η|<0.8 and for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<5 GeV/c. The anisotropic flow is measured using two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity gap greater than one unit and with the multiparticle cumulant method. Compared to results from Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV, the anisotropic flow coefficients v_{2}, v_{3}, and v_{4} are found to increase by (3.0±0.6)%, (4.3±1.4)%, and (10.2±3.8)%, respectively, in the centrality range 0%-50%. This increase can be attributed mostly to an increase of the average transverse momentum between the two energies. The measurements are found to be compatible with hydrodynamic model calculations. This comparison provides a unique opportunity to test the validity of the hydrodynamic picture and the power to further discriminate between various possibilities for the temperature dependence of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the produced matter in heavy-ion collisions at the highest energies.

Abstract
We report on two-particle charge-dependent correlations in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions as a function of the pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] respectively. These correlations are studied using the balance function that probes the charge creation time and the development of collectivity in the produced system. The dependence of the balance function on the event multiplicity as well as on the trigger and associated particle transverse momentum ([Formula: see text]) in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] 7, 5.02, and 2.76 TeV, respectively, are presented. In the low transverse momentum region, for [Formula: see text] GeV/c, the balance function becomes narrower in both [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] directions in all three systems for events with higher multiplicity. The experimental findings favor models that either incorporate some collective behavior (e.g. AMPT) or different mechanisms that lead to effects that resemble collective behavior (e.g. PYTHIA8 with color reconnection). For higher values of transverse momenta the balance function becomes even narrower but exhibits no multiplicity dependence, indicating that the observed narrowing with increasing multiplicity at low [Formula: see text] is a feature of bulk particle production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the diagnostic performance of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity measurement using N-[(11) C]-methyl-4-piperidyl acetate (MP4A) and PET in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS Participants were 14 DLB patients, 25 AD patients and 18 age-matched healthy controls (HC). All subjects underwent PET scans and MP4A to measure regional brain AChE activity. We performed anatomical standardization of each brain image, and k3 values, an index of AChE activity, in each voxel were estimated by nonlinear least squares analysis. Volumes of interest (VOIs) were identified on parametric k3 images in frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital cortices, and in anterior and posterior cingulate gyri (ACG and PCG). In each VOI, the differential diagnostic performance between AD and DLB of k3 values was assessed by area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver-operating characteristic. Voxel-based statistical analyses were also performed. RESULTS Mean cortical AChE activities in AD patients (-8.2% compared with normal mean) and DLB patients (-27.8%) were lower than HCs (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, respectively). There was a significant difference in mean cortical AChE activities between AD and DLB patients (p < 0.001). All regional brain AChE activities of defined VOIs except ACG were able to well discriminate DLB from AD, and notably performance was the most significant in PCG (AUC = 0.989, 95% CI: 0.965-1.000). CONCLUSIONS Brain cholinergic deficit is consistently prominent in DLB compared with AD. PET measurement of brain AChE activity may be useful for the differential diagnosis between DLB and AD.

Abstract
We have demonstrated continuous wave (CW) laser operation and the first, to the best of our knowledge, sub-200 fs mode-locked laser operation of Nd(3+)-doped Ba(Zr,Mg,Ta)O(3) ceramic. Its disordered crystalline nature exhibits a broad gain bandwidth of 30 nm with a high-emission cross section. It also has higher thermal and mechanical properties than Nd:glass. In CW operation, a maximum output power of 1.5 W under 6.2 W of absorbed pump power was obtained. In mode-locked operation, a pulse duration of 196 fs with an average power of 60 mW was successfully achieved. The laser spectrum straddled both fluorescence peaks of A-site and B-site Nd(3+) ions.

Abstract
The measurement of primary [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] production at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text] 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 7 TeV performed with a large ion collider experiment at the large hadron collider (LHC) is reported. Particle identification is performed using the specific ionisation energy-loss and time-of-flight information, the ring-imaging Cherenkov technique and the kink-topology identification of weak decays of charged kaons. Transverse momentum spectra are measured from 0.1 up to 3 GeV/[Formula: see text] for pions, from 0.2 up to 6 GeV/[Formula: see text] for kaons and from 0.3 up to 6 GeV/[Formula: see text] for protons. The measured spectra and particle ratios are compared with quantum chromodynamics-inspired models, tuned to reproduce also the earlier measurements performed at the LHC. Furthermore, the integrated particle yields and ratios as well as the average transverse momenta are compared with results at lower collision energies.

Abstract
It is known that solid food is transported to the pharynx actively in parallel to it being crushed by chewing and mixed with saliva in the oral cavity. Therefore, food bolus formation should be considered to take place from the oral cavity to the pharynx. In previous studies, the chewed food was evaluated after the food had been removed from the oral cavity. However, it has been pointed out that spitting food out of the oral cavity interferes with natural food bolus formation. Therefore, we observed food boluses immediately before swallowing using an endoscope to establish a method to evaluate the food bolus-forming function, and simultaneously performed endoscopic evaluation of food bolus formation and its relationship with the number of chewing cycles. The subject was inserted the endoscope nasally and instructed to eat two coloured samples of boiled rice simultaneously in two ingestion conditions ('as usual' and 'chewing well'). The condition of the food bolus was graded into three categories for each item of grinding, mixing and aggregation and scored 2, 1 and 0. The score of aggregation was high under both ingestion conditions. The scores of grinding and mixing tended to be higher in subjects with a high number of chewing cycles, and the score of aggregation was high regardless of the number of chewing cycles. It was suggested that food has to be aggregated, even though the number of chewing cycles is low and the food is not ground or mixed for a food bolus to reach the swallowing threshold.

Abstract
Far-upstream element-binding protein-interacting repressor (FIR) is a transcription factor that inhibits c-Myc expression and has been shown to have antitumor effects in some malignancies. Here, we evaluated the antitumor effects of FIR using fusion gene-deleted Sendai virus (SeV/ΔF) as a nontransmissible vector against head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Using in vitro and in vivo xenograft mouse models, we observed efficient expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) following transduction with the SeV/ΔF vector encoding GFP (GFP-SeV/ΔF) into HNSCC cells. In vitro and in vivo studies revealed that administration of the FIR-encoded SeV/ΔF (FIR-SeV/ΔF) vector exerted significant antitumor effects, suppressed c-Myc expression and induced apoptosis in HNSCC. Additionally, the antitumor effects of FIR or the expression of GFP following administration of the FIR- or GFP-SeV/ΔF vector, respectively, were dependent on the multiplicity of infection or titer. Furthermore, the SeV/ΔF vector itself had no cytotoxic effects. Therefore, the SeV/ΔF vector may be safe and useful for the treatment of HNSCC, allowing for high-titer SeV/ΔF vector administration for anticancer gene therapy. In addition, SeV/ΔF vector-mediated FIR gene therapy demonstrated effective tumor suppression in HNSCC, suggesting that this therapy may have the potential for clinical use as a novel strategy for HNSCC treatment.

Abstract
Over the past decade, networks have become a leading model to illustrate both the anatomical relationships (structural networks) and the coupling of dynamic physiology (functional networks) linking separate brain regions. The relationship between these two levels of description remains incompletely understood and an area of intense research interest. In particular, it is unclear how cortical currents relate to underlying brain structural architecture. In addition, although theory suggests that brain communication is highly frequency dependent, how structural connections influence overlying functional connectivity in different frequency bands has not been previously explored. Here we relate functional networks inferred from statistical associations between source imaging of EEG activity and underlying cortico-cortical structural brain connectivity determined by probabilistic white matter tractography. We evaluate spontaneous fluctuating cortical brain activity over a long time scale (minutes) and relate inferred functional networks to underlying structural connectivity for broadband signals, as well as in seven distinct frequency bands. We find that cortical networks derived from source EEG estimates partially reflect both direct and indirect underlying white matter connectivity in all frequency bands evaluated. In addition, we find that when structural support is absent, functional connectivity is significantly reduced for high frequency bands compared to low frequency bands. The association between cortical currents and underlying white matter connectivity highlights the obligatory interdependence of functional and structural networks in the human brain. The increased dependence on structural support for the coupling of higher frequency brain rhythms provides new evidence for how underlying anatomy directly shapes emergent brain dynamics at fast time scales.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the detectability of simulated interstitial pneumonia on chest radiographs between an irradiation side sampling indirect flat-panel detector (ISS-FPD) and computed radiography (CR). METHODS Simulated interstitial pneumonia findings (ground-glass opacity, reticular opacity and honeycomb lung) were superimposed on an anthropomorphic chest phantom. Chest radiographs were acquired under three exposure levels (4.0, 3.2 and 2.0 mAs) with an ISS-FPD and with CR. 5 thoracic radiologists evaluated 72 images for the presence or absence of a lesion over each of 6 areas. A total of 1296 observations were analysed in a receiver-operating characteristic analysis. A jackknife method was used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS The areas under the curves (AUCs) for the detection of simulated honeycomb lung obtained with the ISS-FPD were significantly larger than those obtained with CR at all exposure conditions. For the detection of simulated ground-glass opacity and reticular opacity, there were no significant differences between the two systems. In addition, the AUCs for the detectability of simulated honeycomb lung obtained with the ISS-FPD at all exposure levels were significantly larger than those obtained with CR at 4 mAs. CONCLUSION The ISS-FPD was superior to CR for the detection of simulated honeycomb lung. Provided that the chosen model is representative of interstitial pneumonia, the use of an ISS-FPD might reduce a patient's exposure dose during the detection of interstitial pneumonia. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE The ISS-FPD has shown its advantage compared with CR in the detection of honeycombing, one sign of interstitial pneumonia.
