Background
Evidence suggests that red wine (RW) components can influence favorably gut microbiota. However, Interactions of RW, gut microbiota and plasma metabolomics remain unclear.
Purpose
The goal of this study was to assess the effects upon gut microbiota and plasma metabolomic profile of short-term, moderate RW intake in patients (pts) with documented coronary artery disease (CAD)
Methods
Forty-two males aged 60.4±5.4 years (SD) with documented CAD by angiography underwent a randomized, crossover, controlled, interventional trial. They were assigned to either RW treatment or abstinence from any alcoholic beverage, as control. Each treatment was preceded by a 2-week washout period. During the RW intervention, subjects ingested 250 ml of RW per day/ 5 days a week/ 3 weeks. Fasting blood samples and fecal samples were collected 4 times, after washout and at the end of each 3-week intervention. Gut microbiota was analysed by 16 S rRNA gene sequences and plasma metabolomics was performed by Ultrahigh Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectroscopy. Twenty pts chosen randomly had their global metabolic profiles examined at all visits. Diet was carefully controlled and quantified by a 3 day/week questionnaire at beginning and end of the study. Prebiotics, probiotics were not allowed during the study. Patients in need for antibiotic therapy were not included.
Results
In the RW period compared to abstinence, fecal metagenomic revealed a decrease in abundance of Collinsella, a bacterial genus correlated with atherosclerosis; an increase in Eubacterium, genus related to fiber digestion and bile acid metabolism; and a significant increase in alpha diversity (p<0.05 for all). In plasma, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), fell non-significantly post RW consumption. HDL and resveratrol increased after RW consumption (p<0.05). Plasma metabolomic analysis of 20 pts revealed microbiome related changes associated with RW consumption: decreased levels of phenylalanine, benzoate, tyrosine and tryptophan; lower levels of primary bile acids (BA) cholate, taurocholate, and also secondary BA deoxycholate and lithocholate sulfate. In parallel, RW elevated androgenic steroids and decreased beta oxidation (p<0.05 for all). Simultaneously total energy, proteins, carbohydrates and fat components of the diet did not change significantly.
Conclusions
Moderate RW ingestion augmented microbiota diversity, increased the proportion of putative anti-atherosclerotic bacteria and influenced plasma metabolomics. RW influenced energy metabolism through gut microbiota related plasma changes in amino acids, nucleotide profile, bile acids, androgenic steroids and beta-oxidation. These findings furnish some novel insight into mechanisms whereby RW may mitigate atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Background
Long-term outcome data after TAVI is of key importance as indications have extended from high risk patients to intermediate risk alongside contemporary study of low risk patients.
Purpose
We report our complete 11 y experience of TAVI.
Methods
All patients (n=1004) treated with TAVI in our institution between Feb 2008 & Nov 2018 were included. Data was collected prospectively and all death certificates were reviewed. Independent predictors of mortality were determined by multivariable cox proportional hazard modelling. Annular sizing was performed via echocardiography +/or angiography until Aug 2012 after which time cardiac CT was used.
Results
Patients were 53% female & had mean age 81.9±6.6 y, logistic EuroScore 18.5%. 89% were NYHA >2, and 26.7% had a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of <50%. TAVI was performed for severe degenerative aortic valve disease (93.5%), while valve-in-valve (2.4%) bicuspid (2.1%) & rheumatic (2%) made up the remainder. Self-expanding valves were implanted in 73% cases. 98% cases were performed under local anaesthesia. A percutaneous transfemoral approach was used in 92% cases. For the first 6 y 19% procedures were performed for urgent inpatients, rising to 42% over the last 5 y. The mean time to discharge was 5.5 d, overall, & 60% cases were discharged within 72 h in the last 5 y. Mortality, for those at risk, was 3.2%, 12.8%, 53% & 88% at 30 d, 1 y, 5 y & 10 y. The median time to death was 2.6 y. Non-cardiac death accounted for 62% deaths, with sepsis being the main cause (55%). The main cause of cardiac death was heart failure (HF (53%)). Independent clinical predictors of death were increased age, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary disease & LVEF <50%. Use of a 2nd generation valve was associated with better survival at 5 y (p<0.001).
30 d new permanent pacemaker and stroke incidence were 13.7% and 2% respectively. 30 d readmission occurred in 13% patients. Independent clinical predictors of 1 y HF (7%) readmission were NYHA Class >2 and LVEF <50%. Endocarditis was seen in 1.6% during a mean follow-up 2,593 patient y. Mean aortic gradients at 1 y, 5 y & 10 y were 9.7mmHg, 8.4mmHg & 10.53mmHg. One patient had severe trans-aortic regurgitation during the follow-up. A 2nd TAVI procedure was performed in 5 patients with clinically significant paravalvular regurgitation, all within 30 d.

Conclusion
This comprehensive evaluation of all patients treated with this innovative technology provides reassurance regarding the long-term clinical efficacy of TAVI & gives insight into the evolution of our programme with time.

Luminescent porous silicon nanoparticles (LpSiNPs) display red-orange photoluminescence (PL) that provides large penetration depth for precise deep-tissue imaging and diagnostics. Herein, we describe in detail the fabrication process of porous silicon nanoparticles (pSiNPs), activation of photoluminescence, quantum yield measurement, and PL imaging. LpSiNPs perform as imaging probe for both the continuous wave and time-gated PL imaging.

Abstract
The use of commercial yeast strains is a common practice in winemaking leading to a predictable quality in wine production, avoiding stuck or sluggish fermentations. However, the use of commercial yeasts leads to a consequent reduction in autochthonous microbial diversity. In this study, 1047 isolates from three Spanish appellations of origin were checked for fingerprinting on interdelta polymorphisms and the strain composition and diversity analysed using an extensible open-source platform for processing and analysis of an in-house polymorphism database developed for this study. Ancient vineyards managed with organic practices showed intermediate to low levels of strains diversity indicating the existence of stable populations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. A drastic reduction in the number of different S. cerevisiae strains was observed in vineyards with cellars using a selected autochthonous S. cerevisiae strain for winemaking. Contrary, the use of allochthonous commercial strains in wineries did not seem to affect the native S. cerevisiae strain composition and diversity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to compare different viticulture and oenological practices to determine their influence on the composition and diversity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains in wine fermentations. The study shows that the use of autochthonous strains of S. cerevisiae as starters for wine fermentation could have an important incidence on S. cerevisiae strains diversity in surrounding vineyards. The use of autochthonous strains of S. cerevisiae reduced the detected number of S. cerevisiae strains, a fact that was not observed when allochthonous commercial strains were used. Furthermore, vineyards managed with organic practices showed intermediate to low levels of S. cerevisiae strain diversity, whereas conventional practices showed higher levels.

Abstract
Anthropogenic copper pollution of environmental waters from sources such as acid mine drainage, antifouling paints, and industrial waste discharge is a major threat to our environment and human health. This study presents an optical sensing system that combines self-assembled glutaraldehyde-cross-linked double-layered polyethylenimine (PEI-GA-PEI)-modified nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) interferometers with reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS) for label-free, selective monitoring of ionic copper in environmental waters. Calibration of the sensing system with analytical solutions of copper shows a linear working range between 1 and 100 mg L-1, and a low limit of detection of 0.007 ± 0.001 mg L-1 (i.e., ∼0.007 ppm). Changes in the effective optical thickness (ΔOTeff) of PEI-GA-PEI-functionalized NAA interferometers are monitored in real-time by RIfS, and correlated with the amount of ionic copper present in aqueous solutions. The system performance is validated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the spatial distribution of copper within the nanoporous films is characterized by time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS). The specificity and chemical selectivity of the PEI-GA-PEI-NAA sensor to Cu2+ ions is verified by screening six different metal ion solutions containing potentially interfering ions such as Al3+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+. Finally, the performance of the PEI-GA-PEI-NAA sensor for real-life applications is demonstrated using legacy acid mine drainage liquid and tap water for qualitative and quantitative detection of copper ions. This study provides new opportunities to develop portable, cost-competitive, and ultrasensitive sensing systems for real-life environmental applications.

Abstract
RATIONALE Only in Europe it can be estimated that more than 20 million of people would be affected by hypothyroidism in some moment of their life. Given that ethanol consumption is so frequent, it would be reasonable to ask what the consequences of ethanol consumption in those individuals affected by hypothyroidism are. OBJECTIVES To study the interaction between hypothyroidism and ethanol consumption. METHODS We study ethanol consumption in a rat model of methyl-mercaptoimidazole-induced-adult-onset hypothyroidism and thyroid T4/T3 hormone supplementation. Also, we studied the effects of ethanol on motor activity, memory, and anxiety. RESULTS We found that hypothyroidism increased the voluntary ethanol consumption and that this was enhanced by thyroid hormone supplementation. Hypothyroidism was associated with motor hyperactivity which was prevented either by T4/T3 supplementation or ethanol. The relationship between hypothyroidism, ethanol, and anxiety was more complex. In an anxiogenic context, hypothyroidism and T4/T3 supplementation would increase immobility, an anxiety-like behavior, while in a less anxiogenic context would decrease rearing, a behavior related to anxiety. Regarding memory, acute ethanol administration did not alter episodic-like memory in hypothyroid rats. Gene expression of enzymes involved in the metabolism of ethanol, i.e., Adh1 and Aldh2, were altered by hypothyroidism and T4/T3 supplementation. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that hypothyroid patients would need personalized attention in terms of ethanol consumption. In addition, they point that it would be useful to embrace the thyroid axis in the study of ethanol addiction, including as a possible therapeutic target for the treatment of alcoholism and its comorbid disorders.

Abstract
This study presents the development and optical engineering of stacked nanoporous anodic alumina gradient-index (NAA-GIFs) filters with tunable multispectral photonic stopbands for sensing applications. The structure of these photonic crystals (PC) is formed by stacked layers of NAA produced with sinusoidally modified effective medium. The progressive modification of the sinusoidal period during the anodization process enables the generation and precise tuning of the characteristic photonic stopbands (PSB) (i.e., one per sinusoidal period in the anodization profile) of these PC structures. Four types of NAA-GIFs featuring three distinctive PSBs positioned within the visible spectral region are developed. The sensitivity of the effective medium of these NAA-GIFs is systematically assessed by measuring spectral shifts in the characteristic PSBs upon infiltration of their nanoporous structure with analytical solutions of d-glucose with several concentrations (0.025-1 M). This study provides new insights into the intrinsic relationship between the nanoporous architecture of these PCs and their optical properties, generating opportunities to fabricate advanced optical sensing systems for high-throughput and multiplexed detection of analytes in a single sensing platform.

Abstract
α, β and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) are persistent and bioaccumulative pollutants and they were included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Old lindane factories generated high amounts of wastes with HCH and other Chlorinated Organic Compounds (COCS). These were often dumped in the surroundings of the production sites, polluting soil and groundwaters with the associated risk of surface pollution. This is the case of the Sardas and Bailin landfills, located in Sabiñánigo (Huesca, Spain). Among the waste from lindane production, a liquid residue was detected in the landfill subsurfaces, forming a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) composed of HCH isomers, benzene and chlorobenzenes, with a high impact on groundwater pollution. In this study, six DNAPL samples obtained from the Bailin and Sardas landfills were analyzed by GC/MSD and GC/FID/ECD. Compounds were identified using mass spectra and the retention index from pure standards and literature information. Pure positional isomers of dichlorobenzene (DCB), trichlorobenzene (TCB), tetrachlorobenzene (TetraCB), HCH and pentachlorocyclohexene (PentaCX) were distinguished and quantified. In addition, heptachlorocyclohexane (HeptaCH) isomers, precursors of hexacholorocylohexene (HexaCX), were also identified and quantified in the DNAPL samples, although the corresponding isomers could not be discriminated. Information about PentaCX, HexaCx and HeptaCH identification is very limited in the literature. HCH contents in the DNAPL ranged from 22% to 30% in weight, the major isomers being lindane and δ-HCH, followed by α-HCH. The β isomer was the least abundant. HeptaCH contents were present in the same order of magnitude as HCHs in the DNAPL. PentaCXs and HexaCXs could have appeared as dehydrochlorination derivatives of HCHs and HeptaCHs, respectively. Two of the DNAPLs analyzed showed a higher content of TCBs and TetraCBs, associated with lower HCH and HeptaCH contents. Variations of these compounds in the DNAPL could be related to an alkaline dehydrochlorination in the landfill conditions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Assessment of quality of recovery is important as an end-point for outcome research. This study aims to determine the incidence and determinants of poor quality of recovery (PQR) after surgery in patients scheduled for curative neoplastic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS An observational prospective study was performed in consecutive patients undergoing surgery for cancer treatment. The Quality of Recovery 15 score (QoR-15) was applied on the day before surgery (T0) and 24h after (T1). PQR was defined for patients with a QoR-15 score lower than the mean QoR-15 score at T1 minus one standard deviation. Preoperative quality of life was assessed with EuroQol-5D. Frailty and disability were defined using Clinical Frailty Scale and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. RESULTS One hundred and thirty-eight patients were enrolled and 31 (15.9%) were identified as having PQR. At T0, patients with PQR presented lower scores on total QoR-15 (P=.03) and had more problems on EuroQol-5D in mobility (P=.014), self-care (P=.027) and usual activities domains (P=.019). The difference of QoR-15 score between T1 and T0 was higher in PQR patients (P<.001). PQR had more frequently Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI)≥2 (P=.012) and were more frequently frail (P=.03). PQR patients stayed longer in the hospital (P=.034). CONCLUSION PQR patients had lower QoR-15 before surgery, poor quality of life, were more frequently frail and had high cardiac risk factors. PQR patients stayed longer in the hospital.

Abstract
Optical sensors are a class of devices that enable the identification and/or quantification of analyte molecules across multiple fields and disciplines such as environmental protection, medical diagnosis, security, food technology, biotechnology, and animal welfare. Nanoporous photonic crystal (PC) structures provide excellent platforms to develop such systems for a plethora of applications since these engineered materials enable precise and versatile control of light⁻matter interactions at the nanoscale. Nanoporous PCs provide both high sensitivity to monitor in real-time molecular binding events and a nanoporous matrix for selective immobilization of molecules of interest over increased surface areas. Nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA), a nanomaterial long envisaged as a PC, is an outstanding platform material to develop optical sensing systems in combination with multiple photonic technologies. Nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals (NAA-PCs) provide a versatile nanoporous structure that can be engineered in a multidimensional fashion to create unique PC sensing platforms such as Fabry⁻Pérot interferometers, distributed Bragg reflectors, gradient-index filters, optical microcavities, and others. The effective medium of NAA-PCs undergoes changes upon interactions with analyte molecules. These changes modify the NAA-PCs' spectral fingerprints, which can be readily quantified to develop different sensing systems. This review introduces the fundamental development of NAA-PCs, compiling the most significant advances in the use of these optical materials for chemo- and biosensing applications, with a final prospective outlook about this exciting and dynamic field.

Abstract
The present study aims to clarify the association of vitamin D status with functionality, measured through gait speed and hand grip strength, in a sample of older adults, considering sex-specific characteristics and the potential confounding effect of lifestyle factors, disease, skin phenotype, season of blood collection and vitamin D supplementation. The Nutrition UP 65 cross-sectional study was conducted in a population-based sample of 1,425 older adults ≥ 65 years old. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were quantified through electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Multinomial logistic regressions were carried out using quartiles of gait speed and of hand grip strength as dependent variables. Participants at risk of vitamin D inadequacy (30.0-49.9 nmol/L) and deficiency (< 30.0 nmol/L) presented higher adjusted odds ratio of the lowest values of gait speed and hand grip strength than those with adequate vitamin D levels (≥ 50.0 nmol/L). These associations were strongest among men at risk of vitamin D deficiency [adjusted odds ratio for the lowest quartile of gait speed = 3.24; 95% CI: 1.56–6.73 and for the lowest quartile of hand grip strength = 3.28; 95% CI: 1.47-7.31] than in women at risk of vitamin D deficiency [adjusted odds ratio for the lowest quartile of gait speed = 2.72; 95% CI: 1.37-5.41 and for the lowest quartile of hand grip strength = 1.56; 95% CI: 0.81–3.00]. In conclusion, in older adults, particularly in men, the risk of vitamin D deficiency was directly associated with the lowest values of gait speed and of hand grip strength. However, randomized controlled trials are needed to overcome the possibility of reverse causation and residual confounding. Present results emphasise the need for strategies to promote the reduction of the high prevalence of low vitamin D status among the Portuguese older adult population.

Abstract
Metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and diabetes are associated with obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aggressive form of a fatty liver disease may progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Furthermore, recent studies demonstrated that there is a dysbiosis in the gut microbiota associated with early stages of metabolic disease. Therefore, the identification and repurposing of drugs already used to treat insulin resistance may be an excellent option for other disorders. We evaluated the effect of liraglutide on obesity, NAFLD and gut microbiota modulation in two different animal models of obesity: the ob/ob mice and the high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Liraglutide treatment induced significant weight loss in both obesity models, showed improvements in glycemic parameters and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration in the cecum and the liver. In ob/ob mice, the liraglutide treatment was able to reduce the accumulation of liver fat by 78% and reversed steatosis in the HFD mice. The gut microbiota analysis showed that liraglutide changed the overall composition as well as the relative abundance of weight-relevant phylotypes such as a reduction of Proteobacteria and an increase of Akkermansia muciniphila in the treated HFD group. We show that liraglutide can lead to weight loss and gut microbiota modulations, and is associated with an improvement of NAFLD. Furthermore, by generating a profile of the intestinal microbiota, we compiled a list of potential bacterial targets that may modulate metabolism and induce a metabolic profile that is considered normal or clinically controlled.

Abstract
This study reports on the real-time binding assessment between heavy metal ions and blood proteins immobilized onto nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals (NAA-PCs) by reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). The surface of NAA-PCs is chemically functionalized with γ-globulin (GG), transferrin (TFN), and serum albumin (HSA), the major proteins present in human blood plasma. Protein-modified NAA-PC platforms are exposed to analytical solutions of mercury ions of different concentrations. Dynamic changes in the effective optical thickness of protein-modified NAA-PCs in response to heavy metal ions are assessed in real time to evaluate the binding kinetics, affinity, and mechanism. Protein molecules undergo conformational changes upon exposure to mercury ions, with HSA exhibiting the strongest affinity. The combination of protein-modified NAA-PCs with RIfS allows real-time monitoring of protein-heavy metal ions interactions under dynamic flow conditions. This system is capable of detecting dynamic conformational changes in these proteins upon exposure to heavy metal ions. Our results provide new insights into these binding events, which could enable new methodologies to study the toxicity of heavy metal ions and other biomolecular interactions.

Abstract
A comprehensive study about the structural engineering of high quality nanoporous anodic alumina optical microcavities (NAA-μCVs) fabricated by rationally designed anodisation strategies to enhance the light-confining capabilities of these photonic crystal (PC) structures is presented. Two types of NAA-μCV architectures are produced: (i) GIF-NAA-μCVs composed of a cavity layer featuring straight nanopores that is sandwiched between two gradient-index filters (GIFs) with sinusoidally modulated porosity in depth, and (ii) DBR-NAA-μCVs formed by sandwiching a cavity layer with straight nanopores between two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), in which the porosity is engineered in a stepwise fashion. The geometric features of GIF-NAA-μCVs and DBR-NAA-μCVs are engineered and optimised through a systematic modification of the anodisation parameters (i.e. cavity anodisation time, cavity anodisation current density, anodisation period and number of anodisation pulses, and pore widening time). This methodology enables fine-tuning of the optical properties of GIF-NAA-μCVs and DBR-NAA-μCVs, such as quality factor and position and width of resonance band, to generate NAA-μCVs with unprecedented quality factors (i.e. 170 ± 8 and 206 ± 10 for the first and second order resonance bands - threefold and fourfold quality enhancement as compared to previous studies). Our results demonstrate that an optimal design of the geometric features and the nanoporous architecture of NAA-μCVs can significantly enhance resonant recirculation of light within these PC structures, creating new opportunities to develop ultrasensitive optical platforms, highly selective optical filters, and other photonic devices.

Abstract
In this study, we explore for the first time the capabilities of nanoporous anodic alumina gradient-index filters (NAA-GIFs) functionalized with titanium dioxide (TiO2) photoactive layers to enhance photon-to-electron conversion rates and improve the efficiency of photocatalytic reactions by "slow photon" effect. A set of NAA-GIFs was fabricated by sinusoidal pulse anodization, in which a systematic modification of various anodization parameters (i.e., pore widening time, anodization period, and anodization time) enables the fine-tuning of the photonic stopband (PSB) of these nanoporous photonic crystals (PCs) across the spectral regions. The surface of NAA-GIFs was chemically modified with photoactive layers of TiO2 to create a composite photoactive material with precisely engineered optical properties. The photocatalytic performance of TiO2-functionalized NAA-GIFs was assessed by studying the photodegradation of three model organic dyes (i.e., methyl orange, Rhodamine B, and methylene blue) with well-defined absorption bands across different spectral regions under simulated irradiation conditions. Our study demonstrates that when the edges of characteristic PSB of TiO2-modified NAA-GIFs are completely or partially aligned with the absorption band of the organic dyes, the photodegradation rate is enhanced due to "slow photon" effect. A rational design of the photocatalyst material with respect to the organic dye is demonstrated to be optimal to speed up photocatalytic reactions by an efficient management of photons from high-irradiance spectral regions. This provides new opportunities to develop high-performing photocatalytic materials for efficient photocatalysis with broad applicability.

Abstract
Nutritional programming caused by feed restriction during the early life may counteract the profitability of the dairy sheep farm. However, most studies have been focused exclusively on the prenatal period, and scarce information regarding the effect of milk replacer (MR) restriction on feed efficiency [residual feed intake (RFI)] and progesterone patterns of replacement ewe lambs is available. Therefore, in the present study 40 Assaf female newborn lambs were penned individually and assigned randomly to 1 of 2 treatment groups (n = 20 per treatment). The first group of lambs was fed MR ad libitum (ADLB), whereas the second one (restricted, RES) only received approximately 62.5% of the MR intake measured in the ADLB group. All the lambs were weighed twice a week until they were 35 d old. Then 8 lambs from each group were killed and a morphological study of the gut was performed. Moreover, a piece of liver was cut to measure fat content and oxidative status. The rest of the ewe lambs (24) were weaned and offered a total mixed ration ad libitum to calculate the RFI during the replacement phase. Plasma samples were collected when ewe lambs were 8 mo old to perform a nontargeted metabolomic analysis on a hybrid quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled to an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatographic system. Progesterone was also measured weekly on serum samples by sequential competitive immunoassay until the end of the experiment (9.5 mo old). The results observed indicate that moderated MR restriction promoted differences in the morphology of the gut of the 35-d-old lambs, but not in the apparent digestibility or feed efficiency traits (RFI) during the replacement phase. However, there was a trend toward reduced live body weight of the RES ewe lambs when they were 9.5 mo old. Moreover, progesterone patterns revealed that only 1 RES versus 4 ADLB ewe lambs had ovulated for the first time at the end of the experiment. This evidence suggests the existence of long-term effects caused by early feed restriction with negative consequences on live body weight and reproductive traits of replacement ewe lambs.

Abstract
Background Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death among hospitalized patients. At the onset of this condition, there is an over-production of pro-inflammatory mediators that contribute to organ failure and death. The excess production of pro-inflammatory mediators also impairs insulin signaling, which may be a pathophysiological tissue marker of proinflammatory cytokine action before organ failure. Statins and diacerein have pleiotropic effects, such as the blockage of inflammatory signaling pathways, suggesting that these drugs may be an attractive therapeutic or prophylactic strategy against sepsis. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether a statin or diacerein can improve insulin signaling, disease tolerance and survival in sepsis by inhibiting inflammatory pathways. Methods We investigated the effect of these drugs on survival, tissue insulin signaling and inflammatory pathways in the liver and muscle of rats with sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Results The results showed that administration of medications, with anti-inflammatory ability, to septic animals increased survival and improved disease tolerance and insulin resistance in the liver and muscle. The treatment also attenuated ER stress, NF-κB, JNK activation and restored glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) levels in the liver. Conclusions Our results indicate that atorvastatin and diacerein treatment can modulate inflammatory pathways and, in parallel, attenuate insulin resistance in sepsis. Since these two drugs have safety profiles and minimal side effects, we suggest that these drugs may be alternative therapies for the prevention or therapies for the treatment of insulin resistance in sepsis, which could potentially reduce mortality in patients with sepsis. Abstract
The present work studies the efficiency of alkaline activated persulfate (PS) to remediate an aged diesel fuel contaminated soil from a train maintenance facility. The Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration in soil was approximately 5000mgkg-1 with a ratio of aliphatic:aromatic compounds of 70:30. Aromatic compounds were mainly naphtalenes and phenanthrenes. The experiments were performed in batch mode where different initial concentrations of persulfate (105mM, 210mM and 420mM) and activator:persulfate ratios (2 and 4) were evaluated, with NaOH used as activator. Runs were carried out during 56days. Complete TPH conversion was obtained with the highest concentration of PS and activator, whereas in the other runs the elimination of fuel ranged between 60 and 77%. Besides, the abatement of napthalenes and phenantrenes was faster than aliphatic reduction (i. e. after 4days of treatment, the conversions of the aromatic compounds were around 0.8 meanwhile the aliphatic abatements were 0.55) and no aromatic oxidation intermediates from naphtalenes or phenantrenes were detected. These results show that this technology is effective for the remediation of aged diesel in soil with alkaline pH.

Abstract
In this work, in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) with alkali activated persulfate has been tested for the elimination of HCH isomers and other chlorinated compounds in groundwater from Sabiñanigo (Sardas landfill), which was contaminated by solid and liquid wastes illegally dumped in the area by a company producing lindane. Due to the site lithology and the type of pollutants found in groundwater (HCHs and chlorobenzenes) alkali (NaOH) activated persulfate (PS) was selected as oxidant. The influence of variables such as PS concentration (42-200mM) and NaOH:PS molar ratio (2:1 to 4:1) on chlorinated compound abatement has been studied and a kinetic model to predict the composition of all chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) in the aqueous phase with time was obtained. It was found that a fast initial hydrodechlorination reaction took place in which HCH isomers reacted to trichlorobenzenes (mainly 1,2,4 TCB) at pH≥12. Mono-, di-, tri and tetrachlorobenzenes remaining were oxidized without producing aromatic intermediates. At the condition tested a first order kinetic model for COCs and PS concentration was obtained. Zero order alkali concentration was obtained while pH was being kept at 12 for the whole reaction time.

Abstract
AIM In Portugal, the burden of pre-frailty and frailty in community-dwelling older adults is still unknown. The purpose of this study is to estimate the frequency of frailty in a Portuguese sample with ≥ 65years and to evaluate its associated factors. We also intend to identify which criterion has more impact on the diagnosis of frailty. METHODS 1457 older adults with ≥ 65years from the Nutrition UP 65 study were evaluated in a cross-sectional analysis. Frailty was identified according to Fried et al. by the presence of three or more of the following factors: unintentional weight loss, self-reported exhaustion, slowness, weakness and low physical activity. Pre-frailty was defined as the presence of one or two of these criteria. The association between individuals' characteristics and frailty status was analysed through logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The frequency of pre-frailty and frailty is 54.3% and 21.5%, respectively. In older adults classified as pre-frail or frail, 76.7% presented weakness and 48.6% exhaustion. In multivariate analyses, frailty was associated with age >75, lower education level, being single, divorced or widower, being professionally inactive, poor self-perception of health status, not drinking alcohol, being obese and undernourished or at undernutrition risk. CONCLUSION This condition is very prevalent in Portuguese older adults, one fifth are frail whereas half are pre-frail. Weakness identified by low handgrip strength is the most prevalent criterion in pre-frail and frail Portuguese older adults.
