Multiple delivery cesium oven system for negative ion sources

Distribution of cesium in large negative ion beam sources to be operational in ITER, is presently based on the use of three or more cesium ovens, which operate simultaneously and are controlled remotely. However, use of multiple Cs ovens simultaneously is likely to pose difficulties in operation and maintenance of the ovens. An alternate method of Cs delivery, based on a single oven distribution system is proposed as one which could reduce the need of simultaneous operation of many ovens. A proof of principle experiment verifying the concept of a multinozzle distributor based Cs oven has been carried out at Institute for Plasma Research. It is also observed that the Cs flux is not controlled by Cs reservoir temperature after few hours of operation but by the temperature of the distributor which starts behaving as a Cs reservoir.

Optimization of negative ion current in a compact microwave driven upper hybrid resonance multicusp plasma source

Performance of a microwave driven upper hybrid resonance multicusp plasma source as a volume negative ion source is reported. Microwaves are directly launched into the plasma chamber predominantly in the TE(11) mode. The source is operated at different discharge conditions to obtain the optimized negative H(-) ion current which is ∼33 μA (0.26 mA∕cm(2)). Particle balance equations are solved to estimate the negative ion density, which is compared with the experimental results. Future prospects of the source are discussed.

Preliminary studies on local anesthetic and antipyretic activities of Spilanthes acmella Murr. in experimental animal models

OBJECTIVE

Spilanthes acmella Murr. (Family: Compositae) is a herb that grows throughout the tropics. It is used in the treatment of rheumatism, fever, sore throat, and hemorrhoids. A tincture of the flowers is used to relieve toothache. The leaves and flowers produce numbness of the tongue when eaten as salad. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the local anesthetic and antipyretic activities of S. acmella in experimental animal models.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Aqueous extract of S. acmella Murr. (SAM) was tested for local anesthetic action by (i) intracutaneous wheal in guinea pigs and (ii) plexus anesthesia in frogs. In both the models, 2% xylocaine was used as the standard drug. The anti-pyretic activity was determined by yeast-induced pyrexia in rats. Aspirin 300 mg/kg was used as the standard drug.

RESULT

The test drug in concentrations of 10% and 20% produced 70.36% and 87.02% anesthesia respectively by the intracutaneous wheal compared to 97.22% anesthetic effect produced by 2% xylocaine (P<0.001). The mean onset of anesthesia with the test drug was 5.33±0.57 min compared to 2.75±0.31 min (P<0.001) for the standard drug in the plexus anesthesia model. In the anti-pyretic model, ASA in doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg produced dose-dependent reduction in mean temperature at various hours of observation.

CONCLUSION

The present study shows that SAM has significant local anesthetic and antipyretic activities.

Coccidioidomycosis in India: Report of a third imported case

We describe the third fatal case of imported coccidioidomycosis in India in a 31-year-old mechanical engineer originally from Andhra Pradesh, India, who lived in Gwinner, North Dakota. He had traveled to Arizona in summer of 2006, where he drove tractors in a dusty environment at a tractor production facility near Phoenix, Arizona. He was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive. Initially, he was treated in Fargo, North Dakota, in 2006, with liposomal amphotericin B followed by oral fluconazole. Antiretroviral treatment for HIV infection was started. He moved back to India and was admitted to the intensive care unit of St. John's Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore, India. His blood cultures yielded Coccidioides sp. The identity of the isolate was confirmed using the Gen Probe Accuprobe test at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia. In spite of initiation of treatment with antifungal agents (amphotericin B and fluconazole), his condition deteriorated and he expired three days following his admission to the hospital.

Quantification of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, vascular endothelial growth factor, and angiopoietin-2 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma using a real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characteristically a hypervascular tumor and its progression is closely related to angiogenesis. Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1 α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and angiopioetin-2 (Ang-2) are key angiogenic factors in HCC. In this study, expression of HIF-1α, VEGF, and Ang-2 were analyzed and correlated with clinicopathologic features of HCC.

Methods: Expression of HIF-1α, VEGF, and Ang-2 were analyzed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in 67 HCC patients (23HBV, 22HCV, 22NBNC) with mean age 59.09 ± 11.13 years (60 M: 7 F), 9 cirrhosis patients (2HBV, 2HCV, 5ALD) with mean age 48.33 ± 11.31 years (8 M:1 F), and 14 chronic hepatitis patients (7HBV, 7HCV) with mean age 48.33 ± 7.17 years (10 M: 4 F), respectively. HCC was diagnosed on the basis of EASL (European Association for the Study of the Liver) criteria.

Results: Expression of HIF-1α and VEGF were found to be significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis. Although Ang-2 expression was higher in HCC compared to cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis but the difference was not statistically significant. The difference in the expression of HIF-1α, VEGF, and Ang-2 in cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis were not significant. Tumor size was positively correlated with HIF-1 α(p = 0.268, p = 0.030)and VEGF (p = 0.546, p = 0.0001). A positive correlation was also seen between the HIF-1α and VEGF expression (p = 0.347, p = 0.0001). However no correlation of HIF-1α, VEGF and Ang-2 was seen with portal vein thrombosis, cirrhosis, etiology, AST, ALT, and platelets.

Conclusions: HIF-1α and VEGF were highly expressed in HCC patients and may be responsible for the HCC growth. Further studies with a larger number of patients need to be done.

Isolated syncope - an uncommon presenting feature of pulmonary embolism

We describe a case of a 62 year old man who presented with transient loss of consciousness following exertion. On presentation to hospital, he was haemodynamically stable and was not breathless, tachycardic or hypoxic at rest. The finding of exercise-induced desaturation on pulse oximetry triggered further investigations which confirmed the presence of PE.

The effect of surface stress on the propagation of Lamb waves

This work investigates the possibility of the propagation of Lamb waves in thin solid layers with external traction free surfaces, in the presence of surface elasticity, inertia and residual stress. It is demonstrated that such waves do exist and that their characteristics can be quite different from their classical counterparts. The governing equations with non-classical boundary conditions involving the bulk and surface stress are solved exactly in the frequency-wavenumber domain. This solution is utilized to compute the Lamb wave modes for different layer thicknesses. An efficient strategy to capture all the modes of Lamb waves within a given frequency window is outlined. It is shown that the effect of surface elasticity and inertia becomes significant with increasing frequency and decreasing layer thickness, where the number of modes participating within a given frequency window is more than that permitted by the classical theory. Further, it is observed that the nature of the Lamb wave modes (in terms of negative dispersion) in the presence of surface stress is similar to what predicted by the nonlocal theory and microstructure based continuum theory.

Clostridial myonecrosis clinically resembling black quarter in an Indian elephant (Elephas maximus)

An Indian elephant (Elephas maximus) which died of acute fatal myonecrosis was examined to determine the aetiology of the infection. The causative organism was identified as Clostridium perfringens type A. Out of five genes encoding for major toxins (cpa, cpb, etx, iA, and cpe genes) the isolate was found to harbour the cpa gene only, as tested by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. It flanks a 324 base pair segment in the cpa gene, indicating the presence of the alpha toxin gene. The organism was sensitive to amikacin, ampicillin, enrofloxacin, gentamicin and norfloxacin but was resistant to bacitracin, oxytetracycline and tetracycline. The acute malignant nature of the myonecrosis and presence of the alpha toxin gene in the isolate suggested that the myonecrosis, although clinically resembling that caused by C. chauvoei in cases of black quarter, was caused by C. perfringens type A.

Finding vessels--accuracy of CT for identifying anomalous feeding vessels in patients with congenital cystic lung lesions

INTRODUCTION

Contrast computer tomography (CT) scanning is the investigation of choice for the further assessment of suspected cystic congenital lung lesions (CCLL). Its use to identify the presence of anomalous feeding vessels supplying the lesion is well documented, but data regarding its accuracy is limited. This study compares CT results to operative and pathological findings to determine the accuracy of CT in identifying these anomalous vessels.

METHODS

51 consecutive cases of cystic congenital lung lesions managed in one hospital by a single consultant were reviewed. All cases had contrast CT scans performed preoperatively, as standard practice in this institution. We compared the results of these CT scans to the macroscopic appearance at surgery and histological findings postoperatively. We also compared the results of 2 CT protocols used in our institution between 1999-2007 and 2007-2009, respectively.

RESULTS

Anomalous vessels were reported on CT in 9 cases. All but 1 had concordant operative and pathological findings. In the remaining 42 cases, no anomalous vessels were seen on CT. Of these, 9 cases were found to have an anomalous blood supply at surgery, 6 of which were hybrid lesions and 3 isolated sequestrations. The specificity of CT in identifying feeding vessels in the study was 97% (95% CI: 0.83-0.99) and the sensitivity was 47% (95% CI: 0.23-0.71). The positive predictive value was 89% (95% CI: 0.50-0.99) and negative predictive value 79% (95% CI: 0.62-0.89). The most recent protocol yielded an improved sensitivity of 75% (95% CI: 0.22-0.98) and a specificity of 100% (95% CI: 0.46-1.0) with a 100% (95% CI: 0.31-1.0) positive and 83% (95% CI: 0.36-0.99) negative predictive value.

CONCLUSION

CT is a specific investigation for identifying anomalous vessels in CCLL but lacks sensitivity, leading to a relatively low negative predictive value. This emphasises the need in every case to look for anomalous vessels at surgery to avoid morbidity and potential mortality. An improved protocol for CT scans leads to improved specificity and sensitivity and predictive values.

Radiation induced effects on viability and antioxidant enzymes of crustaceans from different habitats

The paper describes differential tolerance of two fresh water crustaceans Mesocyclops hyalinus and Allodiaptomus satanus to 60Co gamma radiation. Mesocyclops hyalinus is dominant species at site 1, near a Thermal Power Plant at Kolaghat East Midnapore where fly ash deposition is a regular phenomenon. Allodiaptomus satanus is dominant species at site 2 at Kolkata, Ballygung where anthroponotic activities are more pronounced. M. hyalinus is naturally exposed to more stressful situation than A. satanus as revealed by comparing the hydrological parameters of the two habitats. Experimental exposure to ionizing radiation resulted in differential changes in viability morphology and antioxidant enzyme activities in the two selected species. Survival experiments showed greater tolerance of M. hyalinus compared to A. satanus up to 8Gy (absorbed dose) after which if showed drastic fail in survival. More pronounced morphological changes were observed in A. satanus as compared to that in M. hyalinus. The pattern of changes in antioxidant enzyme activity is distinctly opposite in the two radiation exposed species. While in M. hyalinus stimulation in activity of both CAT (excepting at 10Gy absorbed dose) and SOD was observed A. satanus showed decrease in activity of both the enzymes when compared to their unirradiated counterparts.

Predictors of survival in patients with non-curative stage IV cancer and malignant bowel obstruction

PURPOSE

Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) occurs in up to 15% of patients admitted to palliative care wards and management can be clinically challenging. Survival is generally poor with a reported median survival of 1-3 months; however, there are no studies describing predictors of survival for patients with MBO.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

All patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital with a MBO were approached between March 1, 2006 and March 31, 2008 to enter the study. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiographic information were prospectively collected from patient charts and the patient's functional status (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score, ECOG) at admission was recorded. Follow-up was until death or the end of the study (August 2008). Survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox regression models were used to evaluate prognostic factors for survival.

RESULTS

Thirty-five patients were recruited. Median patient age was 61% and 46% were female. Median survival of the cohort was 80 days (range 7-873). Median survival for patients with an ECOG performance status of 0-1 (n = 15) was 222 days, for ECOG 2 patients (n = 9), 63 days and for patients with an ECOG 3/4 score (n = 11) it was 27 days. ECOG status was the strongest predictor of survival on the multivariate analysis. In addition, a low blood urea nitrogen level or a high albumin on admission was also associated with prolonged survival.

CONCLUSION

An ECOG score of 0/1 for patients with MBO in the setting of Stage IV non-curative cancer is the strongest predictor of overall survival.

Room for improvement? A quality-of-life assessment in patients with malignant bowel obstruction

This prospective study followed 35 patients admitted to hospital with malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) to evaluate quality of life (QOL). Subjects completed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and Rotterdam Symptom Checklist (RSCL) at recruitment, and at one week, one month and three months.The highest ranked ESAS scores at recruitment (which was generally 18-36 hours post admission to hospital) included loss of appetite (median=7.5), fatigue (6.5) and overall well-being (6.0). The total ESAS score improved by 7.5, 11.5 and 11.0 points respectively at one week, one month and three months (p<0.05, p<0.01, NS).RSCL median scores for physical and psychological subscales were high at baseline (36.2, 42.9) and improved significantly at one week and one month (p<0.05). Psychological functioning appeared to be worsening by three months and at no time did activity level improve significantly. The overall QOL score was extremely poor at baseline (6.0 median) improving to 3.3 at one month (median fall=1.0, p<0.05) and 3.4 at three months.Further work should address the lack of improvement in activity and apparent deterioration in psychological functioning after one month.

Epidemiology of group A streptococcal pharyngitis & impetigo: a cross-sectional & follow up study in a rural community of northern India

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

Group A streptococcus (GAS) causes a wide array of human diseases. Epidemiological picture of streptococcal infection in India is not complete. Hence, disease burden due to GAS in 5-15 yr old school children in northern India was studied and emm typing of GAS isolates was carried out to help in designing prevention strategies.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 4249 school children (5-15 yr) from Raipur Rani Block of Panchkula district in Haryana during 2000-2002; 334 children were followed up fortnightly for one year. Standard clinical and microbiological procedures were used for collection of swabs from throat and skin and confirmation of GAS and its emm types.

RESULTS

Of the 4249 children studied, 658 (15.5%) had pharyngitis; 579 of them could be swabbed, of which 2.8 per cent had GAS. From 3591 children without pharyngitis, 3385 who could be swabbed, GAS was found in 1.3 per cent of them. Impetigo was rare (0.7%), but 7.1 per cent (2/28) children had GAS. In the followup study, 17.4 per cent (776/4447 child-contacts) had pharyngitis, 761 could be swabbed and 2.4 per cent had GAS; among those without pharyngitis, 2016 swabs could be taken and GAS was found in 1.3 per cent; whereas only 2.6 per cent (2/75) of skin sores had GAS. Three children had GAS pharyngitis twice during follow up. Fourteen different GAS emm types were found. emm 71, 77 and 81 constituted 69 per cent of the pharyngeal isolates. GAS pharyngitis and impetigo were more common in winters and summers respectively.

INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION

In north India, pharyngitis was more common than impetigo. Most prevalent emm types of GAS in this region differ from those included in M protein-based vaccines.

Haematological presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus

Haematological manifestations are quite common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but bone marrow aplasia and secondary myelofibrosis are rare manifestations. We report a case of 45 years old male patient who presented with fever, malaena and anaemia without any clinical features of SLE. He had patches of vitiligo for 25 years for which he was applying psoralen with sunlight exposure. This probably precipitated SLE in this patient. The patient presented with pancytopenia which was due to a combination of Comb's positive haemolytic anaemia and myelofibrosis.

[Mathematical modeling of the spatial distribution of the pollen produced by genetically modified crops]

We represent and analyze the results of mathematical simulation of pollen dispersion from the origin, a field sowed by genetically modified plants. Factors responsible for the genetic isolation of such fields are discussed.

A Comparative Analysis of Immunorestoration and Recovery with Conventional and Immunotherapeutic Protocols in Canine Generalized Demodicosis: A Newer Insight of Immunotherapeutic Efficacy of T11TS

Demodex canis is a natural inhabiting mite of canine skin. Immunological disorder or genetic disorder induces the Demodex population to proliferate vigorously resulting in generalized demodicosis with consequent chronic immunosuppression. Signs of generalized demodicosis include alopecia, crysting, erythema, secondary pyoderma etc. Amitraz, an acaricide, is used conventionally for the treatment of generalized demodicosis. In many instances, the disease relapses due to the residual immunosuppression. The need of an immunorestorative therapy has been urged in generalized demodicosis. Two immunorestorative drugs, namely, Immuplus, a herbal drug, and T11TS, a sheep erythrocyte surface glycoprotein, has been used in two separate groups of dogs having generalized demodicosis and receiving Amitraz treatment. It was observed that though Amitraz treated group responded to the therapy showing increased E-rosettes and nonspecific cytotoxic efficacy of T-lymphocytes and decrease in phagocytic potential of macrophages, the groups treated with the immunotherapeutics like Immuplus and T11TS, responded better. However, the group treated with T11TS showed best recovery. These results emphasize the need for an immunorestorative therapy in generalized demodicosis and provide data in favor of T11TS as a better immunomodulator in comparison to Immuplus.

Picture Quiz: An Unusual cause of 'Troponinaemia'

A 58 year old policeman presented with a 4 week history of cough, haemoptysis, exertional dyspnoea, ear discomfort and sore throat. He was previously healthy and taking no regular medications. He was a non-smoker and had no risk factors for coronary artery disease. He had recently completed two courses of antibiotics for a presumed ear infection. He had also experienced occasional minor epistaxis with constitutional symptoms of weight loss and night sweats over recent months. Clinical examination was unremarkable.

Assessment of the impact of pesticide residues on microbiological and biochemical parameters of tea garden soils in India

The main aim of this study was to assess the impact of pesticidal residues on soil microbial and biochemical parameters of the tea garden soils. The microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal (BSR) and substrate induced respirations (SIR), beta-glucosidase activity and fluorescein diacetate hydrolyzing activity (FDHA) of six tea garden soils, along with two adjacent forest soils (control) in West Bengal, India were measured. The biomass and its activities and biochemical parameters were generally lower in the tea garden soils than the control soils. The MBC of the soils ranged from 295.5 to 767.5 micro g g(- 1). The BSR and SIR ranged from 1.65 to 3.08 mu g CO2-C g(- 1) soil h(- 1) and 3.08 to 10.76 micro g CO2-C g(- 1)h(- 1) respectively. The beta-glucosidase and FDHA of the soils varied from 33.3 and 76.3 micro g para-nitrophenol g(- 1) soil h(- 1) and 60.5 to 173.5 micro g fluorescein g(- 1)h(- 1)respectively. The tea garden soils contained variable residues of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides, which negatively affected the MBC, BSR, SIR, FDHA and beta -glucosidase activity. Ethion and chlorpyriphos pesticide residues in all the tea garden soils varied from 5.00 to 527.8 ppb and 17.6 to 478.1 ppb respectively. The alpha endosulfan, beta endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate pesticide residues in the tea garden soils ranged from 7.40 to 81.40 ppb, 8.50 to 256.1 ppb and 55 to 95.9 ppb respectively. Canonical correlation analysis shows that 93% of the total variation was associated with the negative impact of chlorpyriphos, beta and alpha endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate on MBC, BSR and FDHA. At the same time ethion had negative impact on SIR and beta-glucosidase. Data demonstrated that the pesticide residues had a strong impact on the microbial and biochemical components of soil quality.

The use of complementary therapy by men with prostate cancer in the UK

The study aims were to determine the use of complementary therapies (CT) by men with prostate cancer, and to explore factors influencing CT use and attitudes toward CT use. A cross-sectional survey design was used in which a postal questionnaire was mailed to an eligible sample of 405 patients with prostate cancer receiving outpatient treatment in a London teaching hospital. The primary outcomes were the prevalence of CT use and the relationship between CT use and mental health status. Two hundred and ninety-four patients (73%) responded, of whom 25% were using CT. The most frequently used CTs were vitamins, low-fat diets, lycopene and green tea. Multivariate analyses revealed no differences in mental health scores between CT users and non-users. CT users were younger (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.89-0.97) and were more likely to be receiving conservative management in the form of 'active surveillance' (OR 5.23, 95% CI 1.78-15.41) compared with non-users. Over half of the participants (55%) wanted to learn more about CT. Forty-three per cent of CT users had not informed any doctor about their CT use. Clinicians need to be aware of the prevalence of CT use amongst patients with prostate cancer, considering the potential harm that could be caused by interactions with conventional treatments.

Elimination of iodine deficiency disorders--current status in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, India

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Towards sustainable elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the existing programme needs to be monitored through recommended methods and indicators. Thus, we conducted the study to assess the current status of IDD in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal.

METHODS

It was a community based cross-sectional study; undertaken from October 2006-April 2007. 2400 school children, aged 8-10 years were selected by '30 cluster' sampling technique. Indicators recommended by the WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD were used. Subjects were clinically examined by standard palpation technique for goitre, urinary iodine excretion was estimated by wet digestion method and salt samples were tested by spot iodine testing kit.

RESULTS

The total goitre rate (TGR) was 19.7% (95% CI = 18.1-21.3 %) with grade I and grade II (visible goitre) being 16.7% and 3% respectively. Goitre prevalence did not differ by age but significant difference was observed in respect of sex. Median urinary iodine excretion level was 11.5 mcg/dL and none had value less than 5 mcg/dL. Only 50.4% of the salt samples tested were adequately iodised (> or = 15 ppm).

CONCLUSION

The district is in a phase of transition from iodine deficiency to iodine sufficiency as evident from the high goitre prevalence (19.7%) and median urinary iodine excretion (11.5 mcg/dL) within optimum limit. But, salt iodisation level far below the recommended goal highlights the need for intensified efforts towards successful transition.

Thoracic epidural catheterization leading to delayed transient neurological symptoms with normal imaging findings

Paraparesis after epidural catheterization is rare but may be multifactorial. We report a case of temporary paraparesis in a 32-year-old female patient after thoracic epidural catheterization performed analgesia. A 16 G epidural needle was introduced at the T(7)-T(8) interspace but as frank blood came through, it was withdrawn and was reinserted at the T(8)-T(9) interspace. An 18 G epidural catheter was introduced and 10 ml of 0.125% bupivacaine with buprenorphine 150 mcg was given. Further top-ups were given for 48 h on complain of pain. There was an episode of hypotension after giving the epidural drug but later on the patient remained haemodynamically stable. On the fourth post-operative day, the patient reported paraparesis with heaviness and tingling sensation in both lower extremities. MRI was normal with no evidence of spinal cord compression, oedema, haematoma or abscess. The patient improved gradually within a period of 3 days. The possible causes of delayed onset of neurological symptoms are discussed.

Cobalt and nickel uptake by rice and accumulation in soil amended with municipal solid waste compost

Effect of addition of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) on cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) contents of submerged rice paddies were studied. A sequential extraction method was used to determine the metal (Co and Ni) fractions in MSWC and cow dung manure (CDM). Both metals were significantly bound to the organic matter and Fe and Mn oxides in MSWC and CDM. Metal content in rice straw was higher than in rice grain. Metal bound with Fe and Mn oxides in MSWC and CDM best correlated with straw and grain metal followed by water soluble and exchangeable fractions. Carbonate, organic matter bound and residual fractions in MSWC and CDM did not significantly correlate with rice straw and grain metal. MSWC would be a valuable resource for agriculture, but long-term field experiments with MSWC are needed to assess by regular monitoring of the metal loads and accumulation in soil and plants.

Effect of heavy metals on microbial biomass and activities in century old landfill soil

A study was conducted to determine the effect of metals on soil microbial biomass and activities in landfill soils as well as normal background soil. The microbial biomass and activities were consistently higher in the landfill soils than in the background soil. Significant positive correlations existed between the microbial parameters and soil organic carbon. The landfill soils contained higher concentrations of metals (iron, manganese, copper, cadmium, lead and zinc) than did the background soil. Microbial parameters were negatively correlated with the metals, with inhibition increasing with the bioavailability of the metals. It is suggested that the metals affected microbial biomass and activities by behaving synergistically or additively with each other. Although the landfill soils had higher microbial biomass and activities than the background soil, due to higher organic matter content, the ratios of microbial parameters/organic carbon indicated that inhibition of microbial growth and activities had occurred due to metal stress.

Role of virulence plasmid of Aeromonas hydrophila in the pathogenesis of ulcerative disease syndrome in Clarias batrachus

Pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila (strain VB21), a multiple-drug resistance strain contains a plasmid of about 21 kb. After curing of plasmid, the isolates became sensitive to antimicrobials, to which they were earlier resistant. The cured bacteria exhibited significant alterations in their surface structure, growth profile and virulence properties, and failed to cause ulcerative disease syndrome (UDS) when injected into the Indian catfish Clarias batrachus. Routine biochemical studies revealed that the plasmid curing did not alter the biochemical properties of the bacteria. After transformation of the plasmid into cured A. hydrophila the bacterium regained its virulence properties and induced all the characteristic symptoms of UDS when injected into fish. Thus, the plasmid plays a pivotal role in the phenotype, growth and virulence of A. hydrophila and pathogenesis of aeromonad UDS.

Frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocoele with colpocephaly: case report and clinical review

Frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocoele is a rare congenital disease in which an intracranial mass protrudes through a midline defect from the anterior cranial fossa into the facial skeleton. The condition affects patients in South East Asian countries, such as Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Indonesia, with frequency of 1 in 5000. The pathogenesis of encephalocoeles may be regarded as a 'late' neurulation defect during the fourth gestational week. We present a case of frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocoele with corpus callosal agenesis and colpocephaly; this may well be the first report of this combination. The patient had a bulging mass in the middle frontonasal area, with broadening of the nasal bridge and hypertelorism. Computed tomography scans delineated the skull defect and associated brain anomalies. A one-stage, combined transfacial-transcranial approach, correctional procedure was performed. We present here a discussion of the findings, with special reference to the condition's pathogenesis, morphological classification and evolving surgical treatments. Early diagnosis and referral, involving multidisciplinary teamwork, are of paramount importance because of the distorting influence of the extruding mass on facial growth.

Coffee consumption protects human lymphocytes against oxidative and 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole acetate (Trp-P-2) induced DNA-damage: Results of an experimental study with human volunteers

Aim of the study was to investigate the impact of coffee on DNA-stability in humans. DNA-damage was monitored in lymphocytes of eight individuals with single cell gel electrophoresis assays before and after consumption of 600 ml coffee (400 ml paper filtered and 200 ml metal filtered/d) for five days. Under standard conditions, no alteration of DNA-migration was seen, but a strong reduction of DNA-migration attributable to endogenous formation of oxidised purines and pyrimidines was detected with restriction enzymes; furthermore DNA-damage caused by reactive oxygen radicals (H2O2 treatment) and by the heterocyclic aromatic amine 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole-acetate was significantly reduced after coffee consumption by 17% and 35%, respectively. Also in in vitro experiments, inhibition of H2O2 induced DNA-damage was observed with coffee at low concentrations (<or= 25 microl/ml) whereas the diterpenoids cafestol and kahweol caused only marginal effects indicating that the effects of coffee are due to scavenging effects of other constituents. Enzyme measurements showed that additionally induction of antioxidant enzymes may play a role: while the activity of glutathione peroxidase was only marginally increased after coffee consumption, a significant (38%) increase of superoxide dismutase activity was detected. Comparisons with results of earlier studies suggest that coffee consumption may prevent oxidative DNA-damage to a higher extent as diets enriched in fruits and vegetables.

L-asparaginase and L-glutaminase activities in submerged rice soil amended with municipal solid waste compost and decomposed cow manure

The field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) as a soil amendment on L-asparaginase (LA) and L-glutaminase (LG) activities. Experiments were conducted during the wet seasons of 1997, 1998 and 1999 on rice grown under a submerged condition, at the Agriculture Experimental Farm, Calcutta University at Baruipur, West Bengal, India. The treatments consisted of control, no input; MSWC, at 60 Kg N ha(- 1); well-decomposed cow manure (DCM), at 60 Kg N ha(- 1); MSWC (30 Kg N ha(- 1)) + Urea (U) (30 Kg N ha(- 1)); DCM (30 Kg N ha(- 1)) + U (30 Kg N ha(- 1)) and Fertilizer, (at 60:30:30 NPK kg ha(- 1)) through urea, single superphosphate and muriate of potash respectively). LA and LG activities alone and their ratio with organic-C (ratio index value, RIV), straw and grain yield were higher in DCM than MSWC-treated soils, due to higher amount of biogenic organic materials like water-soluble organic carbon, carbohydrate and mineralizable nitrogen in the former. The studied parameters were higher when urea was integrated with DCM or MSWC, compared to their single applications. The heavy metals in MSWC did not detrimentally influence the above-measured activities of soil. In the event of long term MSWC application, changes in soil quality parameters should be monitored regularly, since heavy metals once entering into soil persist over a long period.

Municipal waste compost as an alternative to cattle manure for supplying potassium to lowland rice

The importance of the use of potassium in agriculture is increasing in South Asia for making most productive use of the nutrient in terms of economic returns. Nutrient supply traditionally by cattle manure is constrained by its insufficient availability. Municipal waste compost may be an alternative source of nutrient supplements. Field experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm of Calcutta University, West Bengal, India during the wet seasons of 1997, 1998 and 1999 on flooded lowland rice. Potassium fractions in municipal waste compost and cattle manure were determined by sequential extraction and also the potassium uptake by rice to compare the effectiveness of municipal waste compost with traditional manure. Potassium was significantly bound to the organic matter in municipal waste compost. Potassium uptake by rice grain and straw increased significantly with the combined application of organics and fertilizers and it was higher in grain than in straw. Water-soluble and non-exchangeable potassium contents of municipal waste compost and cattle manure were highly correlated with the uptake of potassium by straw and grain. Exchangeable and residual potassium were also significantly correlated with the uptake of potassium by straw and grain of rice. Much higher uptake of K in rice straw and rain resulted from applying the manures in conjunction with fertilizers than when applied singly.

A process-based mathematical model on methane production with emission indices for control

In this paper, a process-based mathematical model is developed for the production of methane through biodegradation. It is a three-dimensional model given by ordinary differential equations. The results of the analysis of the model are interpreted through three emission indices, which are introduced for the first time. The estimation of either one or all of them can interpret the feasibility of the equilibrium and the long-term emission tendency of methane. The vulnerability of the methane production process with respect to soil temperature effects in methanogenic phase has been discussed and a feasible condition within a specified temperature range has defined for the nonvulnerability of the methane production process and also it has shown that under the same condition, zero-emission process of methane will be nonvulnerable with respect to the soil temperature effects in methanogenic phase. Lastly, condition for zero emission of methane is also obtained and it is interpreted through the emission indices.
