Abstract
BACKGROUND The existing literature does not contain information about the prevalence of gastric ulcers in mules, and on the potential associations between the presence of ulcers and work load, work type, diet, sex, age and body condition score (BCS). OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with mule gastric ulcer syndrome (MGUS) and evaluate its distribution in both mule squamous gastric disease (MSGD) and mule glandular gastric disease (MGGD) mucosa in a population of mules in Colombia. STUDY DESIGN Observational, cross-sectional. METHODS A total of 97 clinically healthy mules of different ages and locations in the province of Antioquia (Colombia) were included in this study. The mules were involved in agricultural activities (i.e., riding, pack and ranch mules) at the time of the study. The animals underwent gastroscopic evaluation, and ulcer scores from 0 to 4 were assigned based on severity, with scores ≥2 indicating clinical relevance. The presence or absence of ulcer in the squamous and/or glandular region of the stomach was recorded. Data related to work type, work load and diet, as well as sex, age and BCS were recorded for each mule. Pearson's chi-square test was used to determine the association between the outcomes and explanatory variables of the study (p ≤ 0.05). The results of the risk estimations were presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The frequency of MGUS in the study population was 42%. Most of the lesions were located in the squamous region of the stomach (27%), mainly in the margo plicatus, and 20% were located in the glandular region, mainly in the fundus and pyloric antrum. Six animals showed lesions in both squamous and glandular regions. Work load was the only variable associated with the presence of MGUS (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 0.49-0.96) and MSGD (OR: 1.78; 95% CI: 0.36-0.67). Nevertheless, the findings did not provide any significant risk assessment result, nor did they reveal any significant interactions among the other variables. MAIN LIMITATIONS This study used convenience sampling from a limited geographic region, and multivariate analysis was not performed, one of the exclusion criteria was the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which means that the effect of these drugs can no longer be evaluated. CONCLUSIONS MGUS occurs in mules subjected to agricultural work, the risk factors associated with EGUS do not appear to be significant in mules and other equids subjected to the same conditions, in this region. Further research is needed to define the differential dynamics of MGUS in comparison with the findings in horses.

Abstract
Hoof diseases are a major welfare and economic issue in the global dairy cattle production industry, which can be minimized through improved management and breeding practices. Optimal genetic improvement of hoof health could benefit from a deep understanding of the genetic background and biological underpinning of indicators of hoof health. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to perform genome-wide association studies, using imputed high-density genetic markers data from North American Holstein cattle, for 8 hoof-related traits: digital dermatitis, sole ulcer, sole hemorrhage, white line lesion, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, and toe ulcer, and a hoof health index. De-regressed estimated breeding values from 25,580 Holstein animals were used as pseudo-phenotypes for the association analyses. The genomic quality control, genotype phasing, and genotype imputation were performed using the PLINK (version 1.9), Eagle (version 2.4.1), and Minimac4 software, respectively. The functional genomic analyses were performed using the GALLO R package and the DAVID platform. We identified 22, 34, 14, 22, 28, 33, 24, 43, and 15 significant markers for digital dermatitis, heel horn erosion, interdigital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, sole hemorrhage, sole ulcer, toe ulcer, white line lesion disease, and the hoof health index, respectively. The significant markers were located across all autosomes, except BTA10, BTA12, BTA20, BTA26, BTA27, and BTA28. Moreover, the genomic regions identified overlap with various previously reported quantitative trait loci for exterior, health, meat and carcass, milk, production, and reproduction traits. The enrichment analyses identified 44 significant gene ontology terms. These enriched genomic regions harbor various candidate genes previously associated with bone development, metabolism, and infectious and immunological diseases. These findings indicate that hoof health traits are highly polygenic and influenced by a wide range of biological processes.

Abstract
Limited access to high-quality feed protein for pigs has made it necessary to evaluate new protein sources that both promote sustainable pig production and meet the nutritional requirements of pigs. Providing pigs with roughage has positive effects on their behaviour and gut health. However, roughage is seldom given as a part of the pigs' diet and often has a long straw length. Knowledge is lacking on the effect of feeding silage with smaller particle size and as a part of the pigs' diet on pig behaviour and welfare. This study evaluated the influence of feeding fattening pigs silage with different particle sizes on aggressive encounters, measured as the number of skin lesions, and on the occurrence of gastric lesions and ulcers. In total, 128 Swedish Yorkshire × Hampshire pigs were fed either a commercial control feed without silage (Pellet-C), or silage mixed with commercial feed, either in a pellet (Pellet-S) or in a total mixed ration (TMR) with chopped (TMR-Ch) or intensively treated silage (TMR-Ex). Skin lesions were assessed twice in the study according to the Welfare Quality® protocol. The first assessment was performed when the pigs were 105 days old and the second assessment at 132 days of age. Gastric lesions were examined in both the pars oesophagea and the pars glandularis region of the stomach. Stomachs were collected after slaughter, and gastric lesions were scored based on established scoring criteria. There was a treatment × assessment interaction on the number of skin lesions on the ear (P = 0.049). Apart from this interaction, no other effect of treatment on the number of skin lesions could be observed between the treatments or the assessment occasions. Treatment had a clear effect on the occurrence of gastric lesions and pigs fed the fresh silage (TMR-Ch and TMR-Ex) had a lower occurrence of gastric lesions and ulcers compared to the pelleted treatments (Pellet-C and Pellet-S) (P = 0.001). This study could not show any clear reduction effect of dietary silage inclusion on skin lesions. However, feeding silage in TMR significantly reduced the occurrence of stomach ulcers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To retrospectively analyze the preoperative clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of evisceration with implantation of an intrascleral silicone prosthesis (EIISP) procedures in dogs and evaluate whether brachycephalic dogs are more prone than non-brachycephalic dogs to develop postoperative complications after EIISP. ANIMAL STUDIED Ninety-One dogs (19 of which were brachycephalic) were included. PROCEDURES Medical records from 2010 to 2019 were reviewed. Signalment, reason for EIISP, postoperative complications, follow-up time, and postoperative eye appearance were analyzed. RESULTS The most frequently represented breeds were French Bulldog [11/91 (12%) dogs], Jack Russell Terrier [6/91 (7%)], and Shih Tzu [6/91 (7%)]. Brachycephalic dogs were statistically younger than non-brachycephalic dogs at the time of EIISP (p = 1.61 × 10-5 ). Uncontrolled glaucoma was the most common reason for EIISP in both groups. Short-term complications (from D0 to D15) seen in 7/91 (8%) dogs included epithelial corneal ulcers (n = 3), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) (n = 2), and prosthesis extrusion (n = 2). Long-term complications seen in 26/91 (29%) dogs included KCS (n = 11), epithelial corneal ulcers (n = 7), stromal ulcers (n = 3), entropion (n = 4), and prosthesis extrusion (n = 1). Extrusion of the prosthesis occurred twice in eyes that had undergone diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation. The risk of postoperative complications was not significantly different between brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs (p = .3). CONCLUSIONS Brachycephalic status in dogs does not appear to influence the risk of complications from EIISP. Nevertheless, the present study is a reminder that EIISP focuses on esthetics, and considering the possible complications associated with it, it does not provide a benefit to the patient compared to enucleation.

Abstract
Cribbing, a stereotypic oral behavior observed in horses, involves placing incisors on a fixed object, arching the neck, pulling against the object, and emitting an audible grunt. This behavior has been associated with gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction and gastric ulceration. In this randomized crossover study, we investigated the impact of a GI support supplement (SPL) on the GI environment and physiology of four cribbing (CB) and four non-cribbing horses (NCB). Mature Quarter Horses, acclimated to individual stalls for 16 hours daily with paddock turnout in pairs for 8 hours per day, were randomly assigned to receive either the SPL or placebo for 21 days, followed by a 2-week washout period. Fecal and gastric samples were collected for pH determination and blood samples were analyzed for serum cortisol and gastrin levels. Endoscopic examinations assessed gastric ulcer severity, and cribbing frequency and bouts were recorded via video surveillance. Data were analyzed using a mixed-model ANOVA. Results showed no differences in fecal and gastric pH between cribbing statuses. However, an interaction between supplementation and cribbing status was observed for squamous mucosa ulcer scores (P=0.003). There were no differences in glandular mucosa ulcer scores, serum cortisol, serum gastrin, and crib-bite count between CB and NCB horses or between supplementation groups. Crib-bout duration did not differ with supplementation, but differences were found between periods (P<0.05) and hour ranges (P<0.001). Our findings suggest that the GI support supplement may not effectively address cribbing behavior or alter the GI environment in NCB or CB horses.

Abstract
Lesions in the oral cavity of dogs can be erythematous, leukoplakic, or pigmented in coloration. The diagnosis of oral erosions, ulcers, and white lesions in contrast to pigmented lesions in veterinary practice can be challenging. The most benign-looking oral ulcers can be associated with local malignant or systemic disease. Many factors are important in the evaluation and correct diagnosis of oral lesions, including medical and drug history, description of the lesion, number of lesions, depth of the lesion, biopsy technique, and correct histologic interpretation. The goal of this paper is to create a decision tree to guide the classification and proper diagnosis of canine oral mucosal lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the in vitro antibacterial efficacy of equine and canine autologous conditioned plasma (ACP) and amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEED) against aerobic bacteria common to the corneal surface. PROCEDURES Canine (n = 4) and equine (n = 4) anticoagulated whole blood samples were sterilely collected, pooled for each species, and processed using the Arthrex ACP® Double-Syringe System. Platelet counts were performed on ACP and pooled blood. AMEED were obtained from a commercial source. An electronic medical records search (2013-2022) identified aerobic bacteria cultured from canine and equine corneal ulcers at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU-CVM). Ten commonly isolated bacteria for each species were collected from cultures submitted to the MSU-CVM Microbiology Diagnostic Service and frozen at -80°C. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to determine the sensitivities of these isolates to ACP and AMEED. Bacterial isolates were plated onto Mueller-Hinton +5% sheep blood agar and blank sterile discs saturated with 20 μL of ACP or AMEED were tested in duplicate. Imipenem discs served as positive controls and blank discs as negative controls. Zones of inhibition were measured at 18 h. RESULTS ACP platelet counts were 1.06 and 1.65 times higher than blood for equine and canine samples, respectively. Growth of a multi-drug resistant Enterococcus faecalis was partially inhibited by canine and equine ACP. AMEED did not inhibit growth of any examined bacteria. CONCLUSIONS Canine and equine ACP partially inhibited E. faecalis growth in vitro. Further studies using varying concentrations of ACP against bacterial isolates from corneal ulcers are warranted.

Abstract
Riboflavin/UV-A corneal cross-linking (CXL) has been applied to treat corneal ulcers in adult horses, but its use in critically ill neonatal foals has not been described. Five cases of hospitalized, critically ill neonatal foals that were in intensive care with corneal ulcers, the ophthalmic treatment, and their outcome up to 1 year are described. A single treatment of CXL phototherapy was performed in three of five foals (five eyes). The application of a riboflavin ophthalmic solution for 20 minutes was followed by the UV-A light irradiation at 30 mW/cm2 for 3 minutes. Topical antibiotic administration was withdrawn after CXL. Two other foals received standard treatment. Descriptions of ocular lesions, fluorescein staining, and photographic documentation were recorded. The visual outcome, corneal transparency, and aesthetics, as well as healing time were evaluated in the follow-up. The frequency of topical medication considerably decreased in cases treated with CXL. Corneal opacity and pain decreased within 3 days following CXL. In the foals treated with CXL, the ulcers healed (fluorescein stain negative) in 24, 28, and 35 days after the onset of clinical signs and 10, 15, and 21, after CXL. No fibrosis or corneal scars were found in the cases treated with CXL. The two standard treatment cases healed after 26 and 36 days respectively. Corneal cross-linking may be an additional or alternative treatment of corneal ulcers in critically ill neonatal foals and may reduce the use of antibiotics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe a protocol for corneal ulcer monitoring utilizing daily fluorescein staining and evaluation of owner-acquired anterior segment images. ANIMAL STUDIED Nine client-owned small animal patients (eight dogs, one cat) diagnosed with superficial corneal ulcers at the University of Georgia Veterinary Capitalize Hospital. PROCEDURE(S) In addition to routine ulcer therapy, patients were discharged with supplies to perform daily fluorescein staining including a Quikvue® cobalt blue light camera adapter. Fluorescein staining was performed daily, photographs and/or videos were acquired at home by the patient's owner(s), and images were analyzed daily by trained personnel. In-house examinations were performed weekly and within 24 h after the ulcer had appeared healed on photographs. RESULTS All (9/9) owners were able to take interpretable photographs. The majority (6/9) of patients had images successfully detailing their ulcer healing progress. One (1/9) patient appeared healed on images, but on subsequent examination had persistent ulceration covered by third eyelid elevation. Two (2/9) patients had persistent ulceration, consistent on both images and examination, but exited the study prematurely prior to ulcer healing. CONCLUSIONS Remote fluorescein staining and image evaluation can be considered as an adjunct for monitoring ulcer healing but should not be used alone or as a substitute for ophthalmic examinations. Ulcers under the third eyelid have potential to be missed on image evaluation alone.

Abstract
The current study aimed at identifying the risk factors and initial diagnostic aids for abomasal ulcers. The risk factor analysis confirmed a significant association (P < 0.05) of abomasal ulcers with concentrate-rich diets (OR, 4.795; CI, 1.212-15.974) and concurrent disorders (OR, 2.978; CI, 0.987-8.980), while the buffaloes in early lactation (OR, 2.777; CI, 0.703-10.972) showed a higher tendency (P = 0.078) for the disorder. The depressed demeanour, dark or black manure (melena), anemia, tachycardia, decreased milk production, anorexia, tachypnea, absence of rumination, abdominal guarding, kyphosis, and tachypnea were the most frequent clinical signs. Subjecting the abomasal fluid for cultural isolation, gram staining, and stormy clot fermentation test identified the presence of clostridium perfringes, while screening through uniplex PCR detected cpa toxin. The buffaloes affected with type-3 and 4 abomasal ulcers exhibited a higher peritoneal fluid to serum ratio of total protein, albumin, and glucose with a low (P < 0.01) serum-ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) concentration compared to reference values of healthy buffaloes. The first two principal components of PCA explained 54.50% of the total variances with lymphocytes, creatine kinase, and rumen chloride levels as the top contributors to dimension I, and albumin, total protein, sodium, and methylene blue reduction time (MBRT) for rumen liquor as the major contributors to dimension II. The vector plot revealed lymphocytopenia, decreased hemoglobin, hypoalbuminemia, hypokalemia, decreased rumen pH, neutrophilia, eosinophilia, leucocytosis, greater MBRT, and higher rumen chloride, serum creatine kinase, and blood urea nitrogen as the major indicators for abomasal ulcers. Histopathological studies revealed infiltration of inflammatory cells in the mucosa along with multifocal areas of necrosis, degeneration, and eroded muscle structure. The study projected a few high-scored clinical signs and extremely variable clinical indicators as initial diagnostic aids of abomasal ulcers, which can be confirmed by ultrasonography and peritoneal fluid examination.

Abstract
Twenty nine animals (22 cattle and 7 buffaloes) having type 2 abomasal ulcer (AU2) were studied in this prospective investigation, along with a control group (n = 20). Signalment, history, clinical signs, and laboratory alterations were determined. Blood, rumen fluid, abomasal fluid, and fecal samples were collected at the time of presentation. Depressed behavior, anorexia, dehydration, melena, sparse feces, and mushy rumen with substantially reduced or nonexistent motility, tachycardia, and tachypnea were common clinical findings. Colic was observed in 58% of animals. While the neutrophil count was significantly greater, the mean of lymphocytes, hemoglobin, erythrocyte count, and hematocrit were all lower (p < 0.05) than the corresponding control values. In comparison to the control values, the levels of BHBA, NEFA, lactate, bilirubin, BUN, creatinine, LDH, CK, GGT, ALP, and AST were significantly higher but levels of proteins, cholesterol, Na, K, Cl, and calcium were lower (p < 0.05). In comparison to the control values, the other hemato-biochemical parameters did not differ substantially (p < 0.05). The rumen and abomasal pH were within the reference range while rumen chloride concentration was increased in majority of animals. Higher percentage (p < 0.05) of non-survivors showed left shift and toxic alterations in neutrophils than the survivors. As compared to the survivors, the non-survivors had higher (p < 0.05) BHBA, triglycerides, total bilirubin, AST, ALP, LDH, and lactate, and lower (p < 0.05) fibrinogen and calcium. The response to medical treatment was fair, long time survival rate was good, and there was no recurrence. The follow-up period was 28 months. After treatment, both the current and the subsequent lactation's milk production were unaffected.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the treatment of an acidic chemical corneal ulceration in a puppy secondary to nail polish spilling on and adhering to the cornea. CASE SUMMARY A 12-week-old neutered male Australian Shepherd mix dog was presented to Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital's (CSU-VTH) Emergency and Urgent Care service acutely after exposure to nail polish spilling on the left eye (OS). Initial ophthalmic examination revealed nail polish adhered to approximately 80% of the cornea with moderate diffuse corneal edema and chemosis, and green nail polish adhered to the skin and fur of the periocular area. Copious flushing with eye wash was performed, but no areas of reduced nail polish adherence were noted. The patient was treated with 1 drop of topical ofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution OS and hospitalized overnight, receiving hyaluronic acid ophthalmic lubrication every hour OS. The treatment plan was carried out for 6 h until time of transfer. In the morning, CSU-VTH's Ophthalmology service removed a nonadhered nail polish plaque in 1 piece using Bishop-Harmon tissue forceps. Following removal, a superficial ulcer secondary to an acidic chemical burn covering 100% of the corneal surface was noted, as well as moderate diffuse corneal edema. Following topical treatment for 8 days, the superficial ulcer healed completely, with no significant long-term consequences. UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED This is the first report of management of an acidic chemical corneal ulceration secondary to nail polish spill in a puppy. Early assessment and vigilance in treatment was essential for a good prognosis and outcome.

Abstract
This observational cohort study enrolled cows from 7 freestall dairy herds in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The objective was to estimate the causal role of hyperketonemia on new sole ulcer and white line hoof lesions (SUWL). Multiparous cows were enrolled at the time of their precalving hoof trim, at the end of their previous lactation. Enrolled cows were hoof trimmed twice: precalving between 90 to 21 d before calving (n = 2,037), and postcalving between 21 to 150 d after calving (n = 1,408). We trained 7 commercial hoof trimmers, employed by the farms, in lesion identification to standardize lesion recording. Hoof trimmers conducted therapeutic trimming as well as diagnosing and treating lesions. After parturition, cows between 3 and 16 d in milk were tested once weekly for hyperketonemia using a hand-held ketone meter. Farm staff and research personnel conducted the β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) testing. Cows were classified as hyperketonemic (HYK+) if they had a blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L or hyperketonemia-negative (HYK-) if blood BHB <1.2 mmol/L. At the precalving hoof trim, 15.6% of cows trimmed had a lesion and 1.9% of cows had a SUWL; thus, cows with a SUWL were excluded from further analysis (n = 38). At the postcalving hoof trim, 25.8% of cows trimmed had a hoof lesion, and 3.6% of cows had a SUWL. The most prevalent lesions at the pre- and postcalving hoof trims were digital dermatitis and corkscrew lesions. The incidence of hyperketonemia among cows was 21.1% (421/1,999) and the incidence on farms ranged from 5.7 to 29.1%. After excluding cows due to being hoof trimmed outside our designated window, the multilevel logistic regression model for the odds of SUWL at the postcalving hoof trim included 1,209 cows (HYK+ = 257/1,209; SUWL = 42/1,209). The odds of having SUWL in HYK+ was 0.66 (95% confidence interval: 0.29, 1.49) times the odds of that for HYK- cows. For cows diagnosed with a lesion (digital dermatitis, corkscrew, toe, foot rot, or other lesion) at their precalving hoof trim (n = 199), the odds of having SUWL for HYK+ cows were 0.43 (95% confidence interval: 0.05, 3.92) times the odds of that for HYK- cows. The wide range of compatible causal estimates suggest that hyperketonemia likely has a limited role in the development of SUWL in cows with or without a hoof lesion precalving. Future research should investigate other transition period factors such as inflammation or structural changes to the foot that may have a causative role in the development of SUWL.

Abstract
The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides is an important freshwater aquaculture fish in China. Recently, largemouth bass at a fish farm in Guangdong province experienced an outbreak of a serious ulcer disease. As part of the investigations conducted to identify the aetiology and identify potentially effective control measures, we isolated a pathogenic bacterium (NK-1 strain) from the diseased fish. It was identified as Nocardia seriolae through morphological observation, physiological and biochemical analysis, and molecular identification, and its pathogenicity was verified by experimental infection. Pathological changes in the diseased fish included granulomatous lesions in the liver and spleen, destruction of renal tubules, necrosis of intestinal epithelial cells, infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain, vacuolation of cells, and swelling and cracking of the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Bacterial detection using qPCR showed that the spleen and intestine were the main organs targeted by N. seriolae. The mortality of largemouth bass experimentally infected with N. seriolae at 21°C was significantly lower than that in fish infected at higher temperatures between 24 and 33°C; there were no significant differences in the levels of mortality at these higher temperatures. The level of mortality of largemouth bass infected with N. seriolae was lowest at a neutral water pH of 7 but increased significantly at higher and lower pH. Of the tested Chinese herbal medicines, Chinese sumac Galla chinensis and Chinese skullcap Scutellaria baicalensis exhibited the best antibacterial effects. This study lays a foundation for the clinical diagnosis and scientific control of ulcer disease in largemouth bass.

Abstract
Large-scale fish mortality was observed in flood-affected fish farms across several parts of Kerala following heavy rainfall in August 2018 and 2019-nearly 53% above the normal monsoon rain that the region receives. The affected fish had severe haemorrhages and ulcers, typical of the highly infectious disease epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) caused by the water mould Aphanomyces invadans. In freshwater, snakeheads Channa spp. and in brackish water mullet (Mugilidae) and pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis) were severely affected. EUS was observed in 4 freshwater fishes for the first time: dotted sawfin barb Pethia punctata (Cyprinidae), Malabar leaffish Pristolepis malabarica (Pristolepididae), mahecola barb Puntius mahecola (Cyprinidae) and giant snakehead Channa pseudomarulius (Channidae). Histology and molecular diagnosis confirmed the cause of mortality to be EUS. Fungal hyphae were also observed in deeply ulcerated fish, revealed by lactophenol cotton blue staining. The severity of the EUS outbreak was linked to the sudden change in water quality associated with the flood, such as lower water temperature, and decreases in pH, total alkalinity and total hardness.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium with monopolar flagella, designated as MC042T, was isolated from the profound head ulcers of farmed Murray cod sampled from Zhejiang Province, China. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence and multilocus sequence analysis phylogeny showed that strain MC042T belonged to the genus Pseudomonas, showing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Pseudomonas juntendi BML3T (98.9 %), and less than 98.8 % similarity to other Pseudomonas species with validly published names. Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic reconstruction based on a core set of 1563 Pseudomonas genes further indicated that strain MC042T was most closely related to the clade formed by Pseudomonas protegens CHA0T and Pseudomonas saponiphila DSM 975T and distantly related to any of the validly published species of the genus Pseudomonas. Furthermore, strain MC042T could be distinguished from its closely related species of the genus Pseudomonas by its ability to assimilate maltose, d-xylose and melibiose, but not d-mannitol. The principal fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The respiratory quinone was Q-9. Polar lipids of strain MC042T comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified glycolipids, an unidentified lipid, an unknown glycolipid and aminolipid. Based on its phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, strain MC042T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Pseudomonas piscis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MC042T (=KCTC 72033T=MCCC 1K03575T).

Abstract
Rhodococcus equi infection in horses is common and is characterized by pyogranulomatous pneumonia and ulcerative enterocolitis. R. equi clinical disease in cattle, however, is rare and typically manifests as granulomatous lymphadenitis discovered in the abattoir. A 19-mo-old female Santa Gertrudis had a history of intermittent inappetence and weight loss for a 3-mo period before euthanasia. Gross and histologic examination revealed severe, chronic, ulcerative, and granulomatous inflammation in the tongue, pharynx, and small intestine. Also, the heifer had severe, granulomatous pharyngeal and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Bacterial cultures from the ileum, tongue, and liver yielded numerous-to-moderate numbers of R. equi. PCR analysis of the isolate detected the linear virulence plasmid vapN, which is often identified in bovine isolates (traA- and vapN-positive). The bacteria also lack the circular plasmids vapA and vapB that are associated with virulence in horses and swine, respectively. We report herein an atypical and unusual clinical presentation of R. equi infection in cattle, which has zoonotic potential.

Abstract
We report on the first outbreak of epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) amongst wild fish populations in the Bangweulu swamps, an inland delta, in the north of Zambia during 2014. The area supports a large and diverse fish fauna related to, but distinct from, that of the Zambezi River system where EUS outbreaks have occurred since 2006. A sizeable artisanal fishery, based on extensive fish weirs, is sustained by the annual flooding of the swamps, and observations of the disease outbreak by fishermen were recorded. Signs typical of infection with Aphanomyces invadans were observed in a number of species. Clinical observations, histology and molecular diagnostic methods were used to confirm infection with A. invadans in two of the most commonly and severely affected species. Several features of the wetland may have contributed to the outbreak and the annual recurrence of the disease. Modes by which the disease may have been introduced into the swamps are discussed. The outbreak is of great significance as the Bangweulu swamps drain into the Congo River in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa's largest drainage system with an extensive and diverse fish fauna previously unaffected by EUS.

Abstract
Sole ulcers and white line disease are 2 of the most common claw horn lesions in confined dairy cattle. Predisposing causes include unbalanced weight bearing, and metabolic, enzymatic, and hormonal changes. The white line serves as the junction between the sole and axial and abaxial wall. It is vulnerable to trauma and separation, permitting organic matter to become entrapped. Colonization contributes to retrograde movement of the infection to the solar and perioplic corium, where an abscess forms resulting in pain and lameness. Successful treatment requires an orthopedic foot block to the healthy claw and corrective trimming of the lesion.

Abstract
Stomachs from subadult male northern fur seals (SAMs) ( Callorhinus ursinus) (n = 5,950) from St. Paul Island, Alaska, were examined from 1987 to 1999 for lesions and parasites. On gross examination of these stomachs, parasite nodules were evident in 92% of the stomachs and active and healing ulcers were found in 14% and 10%, respectively. Prevalence of nematodes from 1987 to 1997 was 88% for 5,700 SAMs for which numbers of parasites were estimated but not identified to the genus level. All nematodes recovered from 250 SAMs examined in 1998 ( n = 124; 99% infected) and in 1999 ( n = 126; 91% infected) were identified and counted. Prevalences in 1998 and 1999 were 5% and 0% for Anisakis spp., 52% and 18% for Contracaecum spp., and 96% and 89% for Pseudoterranova spp., respectively.

A 21-year-old Quarter horse gelding was presented with stranguria and incontinence of 10 days duration. Despite catheterization and antibiotic therapy, the horse was euthanized. Necropsy revealed posterior abdominal and pelvic abscessation with adhesions of the urinary bladder and severe ulcerative cystitis.

Abstract
Following an estimated 60% decline in population abundance in early 1993, recovery of the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii population of Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA, has been impaired by disease. Comprehensive epidemiological study from 1994 through 2002 validated an age-structured assessment (ASA) model of disease and population abundance; from 2003 to 2006, the impact of disease was modeled by analyzing only 2 lesions: ulcers and white foci in the heart. The ASA model identified increased natural mortality since 1993 that can be explained by (1) epidemics associated with ulcers (prevalence about 3%) and the North American strain of viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV Type IVa; prevalence up to 14%) in 1994 and 1998 and (2) relatively high prevalence of the mesomycetozoean Ichthyophonus hoferi from 1994 through 2006, including epidemics with the greatest sample prevalence in 2001 (38%, by histopathology) and 2005 (51%, estimated histopathology prevalence). Fourteen other parasites occurred at prevalence > 10%, but none were considered significant contributors to fish mortality. We predict that if natural mortality after 1994 had returned to background levels that best fit the model from 1980 to 1992 (0.25 yr(-1)), population biomass in 2006 would have been 3 times the best estimate, despite relatively poor recruitment since 1994. In conclusion, disease information can be used to explain and predict changes in populations that have confounded traditional fisheries assessment.

Abstract
A new species of Henneguya parasitizing tissues affected by the ulcerative disease syndrome of a freshwater fish Anabas testudineus (Bloch) from Khiodum and Pumlen lakes of Manipur state is described. Of the fishes examined 75% were found to be infested with this myxozoan parasite. Mature spores of the new species are elongated, biconvex, and oval with bluntly rounded anterior end and gradually tapering posterior end with a caudal prolongation, measuring 12.6-15.4 (14.0+/- 1.1) microm in length. Length of the caudal prolongation is 11.2-12.6 (11.7+/- 0.6) microm. The width of the spores is 5.6-7.0 (6.3+/- 0.5) microm. The length of the polar capsules is 5.6-6.3 (5.5+/- 0.3) microm.

Abstract
Pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila (strain VB21), a multiple-drug resistance strain contains a plasmid of about 21 kb. After curing of plasmid, the isolates became sensitive to antimicrobials, to which they were earlier resistant. The cured bacteria exhibited significant alterations in their surface structure, growth profile and virulence properties, and failed to cause ulcerative disease syndrome (UDS) when injected into the Indian catfish Clarias batrachus. Routine biochemical studies revealed that the plasmid curing did not alter the biochemical properties of the bacteria. After transformation of the plasmid into cured A. hydrophila the bacterium regained its virulence properties and induced all the characteristic symptoms of UDS when injected into fish. Thus, the plasmid plays a pivotal role in the phenotype, growth and virulence of A. hydrophila and pathogenesis of aeromonad UDS.

Abstract
Atypical furunculosis is a problem in farming of salmonids and various other fish species caused by a heterogeneous group of atypical Aeromonas salmonicida strains. Winter ulcer is a disease of salmonids and cod caused by Moritella viscosa, but a number of fish species are susceptible to the infection. Vaccines are available against atypical furunculosis of salmonids, but their efficacy is dependent on the characteristics of the infective strain. Vaccines for non-salmonid fish are currently not commercially available. Furunculosis vaccines for salmon can induce cross protection against some atypical A. salmonicida infections and only in some fish species. Polyvalent injection vaccines based on inactivated bacterial cells are available against winter ulcer disease of salmonids. Outbreaks of winter ulcer disease in vaccinated salmon are, however, continuously reported.

Abstract
Groups of gnotobiotic piglets were orally inoculated at 3 days of age with either Helicobacter heilmannii (Hh) or a newly described porcine-origin gastric Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-like bacterium. Three Hh-infected and 6 porcine Hp-like-infected swine were fed a milk replacement diet containing 5-10% (v/v) sterile corn syrup as a dietary source of fermentable carbohydrate. None of the piglets infected with Hh and supplemented with corn syrup developed gastric mucosal ulcers; 2 developed small erosive lesions in the pars esophagea. In contrast, all 6 dietary carbohydrate-supplemented Hp-like-infected swine developed severe gastroesophageal ulcers; 1 of these ex-sanguinated into the stomach and died before the end of the experiment. Four of these 6 piglets had grossly evident partially digested blood in the intestinal lumens, indicative of bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract from the stomach. These data suggest that a high carbohydrate diet and gastric colonization by porcine Hp-like bacteria facilitate development of clinically significant gastroesophageal ulcers.

Abstract
Idiopathic ulcerative dermatitis is a well-recognized disease in C57BL mice and related strains. This disease manifests as a pruritic dermatitis with resulting self-mutilation, dermal ulceration, necrosis, and fibrosis. Ulcerative dermatitis has the ability to confound ongoing research by causing systemic pathologic changes, such as lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly. Although various treatments have been described, none has been curative consistently; therefore, minimizing negative effects on research through prevention of disease is ideal. To identify etiologic factors, we conducted a 2-y retrospective study of 1352 mice with a C57BL/6 genetic background; these mice demonstrated an overall prevalence of 4.1% and a seasonal effect with a peak incidence during midsummer. Corroborating previous studies, our study revealed a disease predilection for female mice. In contrast to prior reports, the disease prevalence was greatest in 10- to 16-mo-old mice. In addition, mice with a C57BL/6 background that were deficient in the gene for inducible nitric oxide synthase had a 50% disease incidence, suggesting a potential animal model for further characterizing the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of ulcerative dermatitis.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether trauma to the larynx caused by nasotracheal intubation induced mucosal ulceration of the arytenoid cartilages of adult horses, and to determine the incidence of such ulceration in yearling Thoroughbred horses and its effect on athletic performance. METHODS Laryngeal trauma was induced in a group of 21 adult horses by introduction of a nasogastric tube into the trachea three times within 5 min. Injury to the arytenoid cartilages or vocal cords was subjectively assessed immediately after intubation, and thereafter at weekly intervals for 10 weeks. The outcome and athletic performance of 33 Thoroughbred yearling horses with idiopathic disease of the arytenoid cartilages, diagnosed at the yearling sales, were evaluated and compared to those of control horses of the same gender and age, from the same sale. RESULTS Mucosal injury was noted immediately after intubation in every horse. Evidence of injury to the vocal or corniculate processes of the arytenoid cartilages or vocal cords was still apparent in 10/21 (48%) horses 1 week after intubation, five of which developed persistent lesions that remained present and unchanged from 28 days following intubation until the end of the 10-week observation period. All persistent lesions were nodules or focal swellings of the vocal cords or arytenoid cartilages, and there was no evidence of mucosal ulceration, infection or discharge. Mucosal ulceration of the vocal processes was the most common abnormality detected in the yearlings, affecting 16/33 (48%) that were diagnosed with idiopathic arytenoid disease at the yearling sales. Five of the 33 (15%) horses were diagnosed with arytenoid chondritis at the time of sale and were excluded from the performance outcome analysis. Of the 28 horses diagnosed with arytenoid abnormalities excluding chondritis, 19 (68%) raced with no history of respiratory-related problems, two (7%) were subsequently diagnosed with laryngeal hemiplegia, and seven (25%) were lost to follow-up. The case animals were 2.7 times more likely to race than control horses, but there was no difference between cases and controls in the likelihood of starting more than three times. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that nasotracheal intubation in adult horses could result in immediate mucosal trauma, persistent swelling, and focal scarring of the arytenoid cartilages, but this did not mimic mucosal ulceration or chondritis of the arytenoid cartilages observed in yearling Thoroughbred horses. The population studied, however, may not accurately represent the population in which idiopathic disease occurs. In this study, arytenoid mucosal ulceration detected at sale did not commonly progress to arytenoid chondritis. However, a study of a larger population of horses with untreated, naturally occurring disease is required to confirm these findings. CLINICAL RELEVANCE It is unlikely that trauma from nasogastric intubation caused arytenoid mucosal ulceration, therefore this procedure should not necessarily be discouraged. This study did not find evidence that horses diagnosed with arytenoid mucosal ulceration at yearling sales had a reduced performance history, therefore it is reasonable to continue to pass horses with uncomplicated arytenoid mucosal ulceration during post-sale endoscopic examination. However, monitoring of the lesions and treatment, if required, may be indicated in the post-sale period.

Abstract
An outbreak of ulcer disease of the cultured turbot Scophthalmus maximus L. occurred in an indoor farm in Haiyang, Shandong Province in the sweltering August of 2004 and caused significant mortality. At the beginning, infected turbots displayed sluggish swimming and anorexia. Several days later, the turbot eyes swelled, the fins and tail turned red, and the back gradually ulcerated. Dissection of the moribund fish showed that the ulcerative gills paled, the liver becamed bloodshot, the kidney and gallbladder swelled, the intestinal wall became filmy and bloodshot. The time course from appearance of disease signs to death lasted about a week. A dominant strain of bacteria, which was Gram-negative and short rod with single polar flagellum under electron microscope, was isolated from the diseased turbot and designated as H1. In artificial infection test, all fish of the experimental groups died in a week after intramuscularly injected with bacterial suspension, while the control group showed no signs in 10 d post-challenge. The moribund experimental fish had similar gross signs as the natural infected fish. The bacteria re-isolated from the challenged fish also had the same characteristics as H1, which proved that the isolate H1 was the pathogenic bacteria that triggered this ulcer disease. Different methods were used to identify the pathogenic bacteria. The identification result by API 20NE and API 20E system indicated that H1 was Aeromonas hydrophila, with 99% reliability and 61.5% respectively. While traditional biochemical identification revealed that H1 exhibited relatedness to Vibrio harveyi. In order to confirm the different result, a 1424 bp sequence of H1's 16S rDNA was amplified and compared with other Vibrio spp. in GenBank, homology analysis and phylogenetic study showed that H1 has the highest similarity to V. harveyi, with 99% identity. According to morphological features, physiological and biological characteristics and 16S rDNA homology comparison of the bacteria, the pathogenic bacteria were V. harveyi. Drugs sensitivity test showed that the pathogenic bacteria were highly sensitive to nitrofurantoinum and ceftriaxone sodium etc. This is the first report that V. harveyi was found as the pathogenic bacteria of cultured turbot in China. The research suggests that V. harveyi should be regarded as an important pathogen of turbot and can causes ulcer disease under conditions of high temperatures. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent against ulcer disease in culture turbot in summer.

Abstract
We observed ulcerative lesions on live Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, during ichthyofaunal sampling in the tidal James River in October 1999 (near Jamestown, VA, USA). Other synoptically collected fishes exhibited no signs of lesions or pre-ulcerative tissues. Live fish were classified as unremarkable (no dermal anomalies), pre-ulcerative (integument intact with boil-like swelling), and ulcerative (severe focal lesions). Specimens were analyzed for bacteria, fungi, and pathogenic protozoans including amphizoic amoebae, Pfiesteria piscicida, and Kudoa sp. No Pfiesteria were detected in any tissue specimen. All B. tyrannus examined, including tissues from unremarkable fish, tested positive for presence of the known fish parasite Kudoa. Only ulcerative lesions were also colonized by bacteria, fungi, and amphizoic amoebae. The absence of bacteria, fungi, and protozoans from unremarkable and pre-ulcerative fish suggests that association of other potential pathogens with B. tyrannus ulcers was due to secondary colonization following lesion formation as a result of Kudoa infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) modulates intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and migration, serving as a critical regulator of intestinal wound healing. The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of administration of recombinant human HGF on colonic mucosal damage in vivo. METHODS Rats were given 7.5 mg of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) per rectum on day 0. On day 5, the degree of TNBS-induced colitis was evaluated endoscopically, and rats suffering from large ulcers (occupying more than two thirds of the luminal circumference) were treated with intravenous bolus injections of recombinant human HGF (1.0 mg/kg per day) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 5 days. RESULTS Rats with TNBS-induced colitis given human HGF showed a significant reduction in colonic ulcer coverage and large intestinal shortening compared with those treated with PBS. Administration of recombinant human HGF also stimulated the proliferation of epithelial cells and reduced the inflammatory cell infiltrate. Finally, HGF treatment decreased the myeloperoxidase activity and tumor necrosis factor alpha levels in the TNBS-inflamed colon tissues. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that intravenous injection of HGF accelerates colonic mucosal repair and reduces infiltration of inflammatory cells in rats with TNBS-induced colitis and suggest that HGF has the potential to be a new therapeutic modality to promote intestinal mucosal repair in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
This study describes an outbreak of ulcerative posthitis that eventually affected 76 of 80 of rams in a flock of Rasa Aragonesa sheep on a legume-rich diet. Lesions were confined to the prepuce and varied from mild hyperaemia to ulcerations. Corynebacterium renale was isolated from the lesions. Treatment of an initial group of 17 was based on a change of diet and topical treatment with Veterin Banedif with prednisolone once a day for 15 days and was successful. Lesions in this group were completely resolved after 15 days. The relationship between a legume-rich diet, ruminal alkalosis, elevated urine pH and posthitis is discussed.

Abstract
A two-year-old whippet cross presented with a large ulcer of the right metatarsal pad. Laceration of the plantar aspect of the metatarsal region involving the flexor tendons had occurred 10 days prior to ulcer formation. Pain sensation was absent distal to the wound, indicating tibial nerve damage. A presumptive diagnosis of trophic ulceration of the metatarsal pad secondary to tibial nerve injury was made. Sensory nerve function returned within 14 weeks and the trophic ulcer subsequently healed. Spontaneous resolution of trophic ulceration has been reported in humans but, to the authors' knowledge, not in dogs.

Abstract
Histopathological investigations have been made on the skin, liver, kidney and intestine of, (EUS) affected fish, Channa striatus and following anomalies have been observed. Varying degree of degeneration has been observed in the epidermis, dermis, hypodermis and underlying musculature. In all the cases, the skin lost the scales and epidermis completely at the site of infection. The dermis along with hypodermis showed the signs of necrosis. Necrosis also took place in subcutaneous layer underlying the hypodermis. Necrotization and formation of granulomas can clearly be seen in circular and longitudinal muscle layers. The liver exhibited the loosening of tissue and distension in cell bodies. While in case of kidney, shrinkage took place in all the components. Similarly, the intestinal villi got necrotised alongwith their constituent elements.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Mucosal ulcers and, occasionally, small granulomas on the axial surface of one or both arytenoid cartilages have been found in TB yearlings presented for post sale endoscopic examination. OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence, endoscopic characteristics and outcome of a group of Thoroughbred yearlings affected with mucosal ulcers and granulomas of the arytenoid cartilage. HYPOTHESIS The incidence of mucosal ulceration of the arytenoid cartilages of yearling Thoroughbreds is relatively high compared to other upper airway abnormalities; and that the majority of mucosal ulcers heal uneventfully, although a small percentage may progress to a granuloma and, less commonly, to arytenoid chondropathy. METHODS The findings of post sale, upper airway endoscopic examinations of 3312 Thoroughbred yearlings, during a 5 year period, were reviewed, including those abnormalities listed in the conditions of sale and others not listed but considered likely to cause airway obstruction. Information obtained from the medical record of horses that had mucosal ulceration or granuloma of the arytenoid cartilage included the location and size of the lesion(s), sex of the affected horse and the presence and nature of other concurrent abnormalities of the upper portion of the respiratory tract. Additional information included treatment and results of follow-up, endoscopic examination by the authors or attending veterinarian. RESULTS Mucosal lesions were seen in 0.63% of yearlings evaluated, which represented the most common, documented condition of the upper portion of the respiratory tract. The mucosal ulcers of 15 of 19 horses were considered to have healed without complication during follow-up examination; one of the 19 horses was lost to follow-up. Two horses affected with bilateral, arytenoid mucosal ulceration developed a granuloma at each site of ulceration. One horse developed a granuloma at a site of ulceration and, subsequently, arytenoid chondropathy. CONCLUSIONS Arytenoid mucosal ulceration in sales yearlings was a relatively commonly encountered abnormality and a small percentage progressed to granuloma or chondropathy. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE The mucosa of the arytenoid cartilage, particularly at the rostral margin of the vocal process, should be examined carefully during endoscopic examination of the upper portion of the respiratory tract of Thoroughbred yearlings presented for sale. Because a small percentage of mucosal ulcers may progress to granuloma or, less commonly, chondropathy, identification of mucosal ulcers of the arytenoid cartilage seen during post sale, endoscopic examination warrants notification to the purchaser and sales company. Medical therapy of affected horses should be considered and follow-up endoscopic examination performed to determine if the lesion has healed.

Abstract
The effects of repeated antidepressant drug treatment on behavioral outcome in Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, a putative animal model of depressive behavior, were compared to Wistar and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Rats were treated with desipramine (norepinephrine [NE] uptake blocker), nomifensine (NE and dopamine [DA] uptake blocker), paroxetine (serotonin [5-HT] uptake blocker) or saline, for 12 days. On Day 11, rats were tested in the Porsolt forced swim test (FST). On Day 12, rats were tested in the open field test (OFT). Stress reactivity was assessed on Day 13 when all rats were exposed to water-restraint ulcerogenic stress. Significant strain differences in behavioral responses to the drug treatments were observed. Control WKY rats showed the typical freezing behavior in the OFT and excessive floating behavior in the FST as compared to Wistar and SD rats. Desipramine and nomifensine decreased immobility and increased swim time in the FST in WKY rats. Nomifensine reduced response latency in the OFT in WKY rats and increased activity in the OFT in WKY and SD rats. None of the drugs altered the FST in SD rats. Following ulcerogenic stress, desipramine was the only antidepressant that decreased ulcer incidence in all rat strains compared to saline controls. These results suggest that the "depressive behavior" in WKY rats may be modified by antidepressants that alter synaptic levels of NE and/or DA, but not 5-HT.

Abstract
A 2-year experiment on the effect of claw trimming on hoof health was performed in 77 Swedish dairy herds (3444 dairy cattle) selected on herd size, breed composition and membership in the official milk-recording scheme. In the autumn, cows within each herd were blocked according to breed, parity and stage of lactation and allocated to two treatments: autumn trimming (AT) or no autumn trimming (NAT). Outcome variables were claw measurements and prevalence of hoof lesions and lameness (measured at spring trimming) and the need for hoof treatments between scheduled trimmings. At spring trimming, NAT cows had longer and shallower claws than AT cows. The average net growth of the toe wall was greater for AT than for NAT cattle, with a marked variation between housing systems. Most hoof lesions present at AT had disappeared at the subsequent spring trimming. Controlled for clustering by herd-within-year and for the effects of individual-and herd-level covariates, AT cattle at spring trimmings had significantly lower odds of lameness (OR=0.66) and of haemorrhages of the sole or white-line (OR=0.86), sole ulcer (OR=0.59) and white-line fissure or double sole (OR=0.71)-but not of moderate-to-severe heel-horn erosion or dermatitis (OR=0.96). Acute hoof treatments between claw trimmings were more common in the NAT group (OR=2.02).

Abstract
A 9-year-old castrated male Chartreaux cat was presented for an ulcerative pododermatitis of all 4 paws. A clinical exam was inconclusive and supportive therapy did not improve the condition. Histologic examination revealed an ulcerative and eosinophilic dermatitis associated with epidermal and dermal nematodes and ova consistent with the aphasmid Anatrichosoma sp. Treatment with ivermectin completely resolved the skin lesions. Anatrichosomiasis should be included in the differential diagnosis of ulcerative pododermatitis in cats, at least in the southwestern United States.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of a commercially available orally administered antacid agent containing aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide on abomasal luminal pH in clinically normal milk-fed calves. DESIGN Randomized trial. ANIMALS 5 male dairy calves. PROCEDURE Throughout the study, calves were fed milk replacer at 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM. Cannulae for pH electrodes were placed in the abomasal body and pyloric antrum. Treatments consisted of oral administration of a high (50 ml) or low (25 ml) dose of the antacid agent and oral administration of milk replacer alone (control). Antacid was given at 7:30 AM, 3:30 PM, and 11:30 PM, and luminal pH was monitored continuously for 24 hours, beginning 15 minutes before administration of the first dose of antacid. RESULTS Administration of the first dose of antacid at the time of the morning feeding resulted in an increase in mean abomasal body luminal pH of < 1 pH unit, whereas administration of the second and third doses of the antacid caused transient (< 3 hours) increases in mean luminal pH of approximately 1.5 (low dose) and 2.5 (high dose) pH units. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that clinically normal milk-fed calves given a commercially available antacid agent, PO, will have a transient increase in abomasal luminal pH. Such agents may, therefore, have a role in the treatment of abomasal ulceration in calves; however, the long-term effects of orally administered antacid agents in milk-fed calves and the clinical efficacy of such agents in treating abomasal ulceration remain to be determined.

Abstract
Keratinization of the epidermal cells of the bovine claw generates the horn that gives the tissue its mechanical strength. Disruption of keratinization is likely to have a detrimental effect on the strength and integrity of the horn, and could lead to solar lesions and lameness. As part of a wider investigation of the cell biological causes of lameness in dairy animals, we have compared keratin synthesis and distribution in healthy bovine claw tissue with those in hooves with solar ulcers. Protein synthesis was measured by [35S]-labelled amino acid incorporation in claw tissue explant cultures. [35S]-labelled protein synthesis was higher in tissue from diseased claws than in healthy claws, and highest at the ulcer site. The identity of proteins synthesised in vitro did not differ between healthy and diseased tissue. DNA synthesis indicative of cell proliferation was also elevated in diseased tissue. Immunoblotting after one- or two-dimensional electrophoresis showed cytokeratins (CK) 4, 5/6, 10 and 14 to be amongst those expressed in healthy claw tissue. The relative abundance of these keratins was not altered in healthy regions of ulcerated hooves, nor at the ulcer site, but CK16, not usually found in healthy tissue, was detected in the sole of diseased claws. CK5/6 and CK14 were shown by immunohistochemistry to be present in the basal epidermis of healthy tissue, whereas CK10 was found in supra-basal layers. In healthy tissue from ulcerated claws, this distribution was unaltered, but at the site of solar ulcers, CK5/6 and CK14 were each found in both basal and supra-basal epidermis. The study suggests that solar ulceration of the bovine claw is not associated with gross alteration in the keratin composition of the tissue, but causes abnormal distribution of cytokeratins, perhaps as a result of loss of positional cues from the basement membrane. Ulceration did, however, stimulate cell repair involving epidermal protein synthesis (including keratins), and keratinocyte proliferation.

Abstract
In this article I review the association between exposure to carrageenan and the occurrence of colonic ulcerations and gastrointestinal neoplasms in animal models. Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 1982 identified sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of degraded carrageenan in animals to regard it as posing a carcinogenic risk to humans, carrageenan is still used widely as a thickener, stabilizer, and texturizer in a variety of processed foods prevalent in the Western diet. I reviewed experimental data pertaining to carrageenan's effects with particular attention to the occurrence of ulcerations and neoplasms in association with exposure to carrageenan. In addition, I reviewed from established sources mechanisms for production of degraded carrageenan from undegraded or native carrageenan and data with regard to carrageenan intake. Review of these data demonstrated that exposure to undegraded as well as to degraded carrageenan was associated with the occurrence of intestinal ulcerations and neoplasms. This association may be attributed to contamination of undegraded carrageenan by components of low molecular weight, spontaneous metabolism of undegraded carrageenan by acid hydrolysis under conditions of normal digestion, or the interactions with intestinal bacteria. Although in 1972, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considered restricting dietary carrageenan to an average molecular weight > 100,000, this resolution did not prevail, and no subsequent regulation has restricted use. Because of the acknowledged carcinogenic properties of degraded carrageenan in animal models and the cancer-promoting effects of undegraded carrageenan in experimental models, the widespread use of carrageenan in the Western diet should be reconsidered.

Abstract
The study was carried out on a single herd of 500 Holstein breed dairy cattle. Only 50 dairy cows (10%) were found to be suffering from focal ulcerative and papillomatous digital dermatitis of the pastern region. The cows were subjected to clinical and histopathological examinations. Early ulcerative stage was seen in 30 cows and late papillomatous stage was observed in 20 cows. The topical application of oxytetracycline solution or benzathine penicillin powder appeared to be effective for the treatment of the ulcerative lesions. The histopathological findings showed signs of epidermopoiesis and papilloma formation. The dermal reaction revealed signs of fibroplasia and perivascular aggregation of inflammatory cells. Silver stained sections indicated the presence of longer filamentous spiral spirochetes, cocci and large-sized anaerobic bacilli invading the stratum spinosum. In conclusion it can be said that bovine digital dermatitis was observed in ulcerative and papillomatous form at the pastern region bordering the dewclaws. Spirochetes are frequently associated with and may be responsible for pathological changes in the lesion.

Abstract
A total of 74 dairy cows with 105 separate lesions were treated and the healing process was observed for half a year and the results compared with the biochemical data. The mean time for the formation of a closed layer of horn was 25 days for lesions with slight corium alterations, 33 days for moderate and 42 days for severe alterations. Thirty days after the initial treatment 68% of all lesions were completely covered by a solid layer of new horn. The further evaluation of the healing process was based on quality and rate of the new horn formation, recovery from lameness and sensitivity to hooftesters. Using these parameters the healing potential of exposed corium was judged one month after treatment with a scoring system. The 30-day-healing process was considered to be good in 61% and moderate to bad in 39% of the cows. The concentration of glucose, cholesterin, LDH and blood urea was increased in one third of the animals. Phosphorus and magnesium concentrations were lower than the reference values in 30%, and 26% of the animals, respectively. Cows with prolonged healing had higher levels of bilirubin, creatinkinase, LDH, ALT and AST than cows with a good healing process. Concentration of iron, vitamin A and biotin were significantly lower in cows with moderate to bad healing parameters than cows with a good healing potential. From these results it is suggested that biochemical blood parameters and the vitamin status might influence the healing of uncomplicated sole ulcers, respectively.

Abstract
Plasma concentration time curves following intravenous (i.v.) administration of 1.5 mg/kg of ranitidine, 0.2 mg/kg, 0.4 mg/kg and 0.8 mg/kg of omeprazole, respectively, were analysed in six llamas. Plasma profiles after i.v. administration of both drugs showed plasma concentrations declining in a biexponential manner with a rapid distribution phase. Pharmacokinetics parameters after ranitidine administration to six llamas showed a mean elimination half-life of 1.53 +/- 0.26 h. The mean volume of distribution (Vdss) in llamas was 1.77 +/- 0.31 L/kg, and mean body clearance in llamas was 0.778 +/- 0.109 L/kg/h. Ranitidine produced only a small transitory (<1 h) decline in acid production when administered i.v. at a dose of 1.5 mg/kg. Omeprazole showed dose-dependent nonlinear pharmacokinetics. The mean half-life of 0.2 mg/kg i.v. omeprazole was shorter than that of 0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg i.v. omeprazole, i.e. 0.61, 0.72 and 1.07 h, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) and mean residence time (MRT) increased with increasing dose, while clearance decreased as dose increased. The decline in acid production following 0.2 mg/kg i.v. omeprazole was highly variable and did not produce a clinically useful suppression of third compartment acid production. In contrast, both 0.4 mg/kg and 0.8 mg/kg omeprazole i.v. administration significantly reduced third compartment acid production. The reduction in acid production following 0.8 mg/kg omeprazole was not significantly greater than the reduction observed following 0.4 mg/kg dosage. Misoprostol (10 microg/kg) was administered i.v. in an absolute alcohol solution. Two animals collapsed following drug administration. While the side-effects could have been produced by either misoprostol or the alcohol vehicle, the clinical changes were more consistent with an adverse drug reaction. Unfortunately, the limitation of UV detection did not provide the sensitivity needed to quantify the amount of misoprostol in llama plasma, and the pharmacokinetics could not be evaluated.

Abstract
The prevalence and spatial distribution of major diseases of dab Limanda limanda in the North Sea and adjacent areas were studied in the summers 1992 to 1997. Areas covered were the North Sea, Irish Sea, northern and northeastern British Waters and the English Channel. The diseases studied were lymphocystis, epidermal hyperplasia/papilloma and skin ulceration. To standardise data, results were analysed for females >15 cm (>3 yr old). Data were subjected to median polish, and additive, extended and additive plus multiplicative models were applied to best account for effects of region and year. Annual differences in disease prevalence were low whilst differences between areas were pronounced. For lymphocystis higher prevalence was observed in the northwestern sector of the North Sea, at the northern tip of Scotland and in an area south of Iceland. Prevalence was low in the Irish Sea, the English Channel and the southern North Sea, and intermediate in the German Bight. For epidermal hyperplasia/papilloma, levels were low at Icelandic stations, in the northern Irish Sea, in the southern North Sea and the English Channel, whilst levels were high in the northwestern part of the North Sea and the German Bight. Elevated levels of skin ulceration were found on the Dogger, at 1 station in the Irish Sea (off Sellafield) and at 1 station to the south of Iceland. Lower levels were detected west of Iceland. Prevalence in all other areas was intermediate. It is concluded that a detailed analysis of available data on disease prevalence and putative causative factors is desirable and, given the good availability of data, would be a promising step forward toward elucidating possible cause and effect relationships between diseases and anthropogenic factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine prevalence of papillomatous digital dermatitis (PDD) among culled adult dairy and beef cattle in the southeastern United States. ANIMALS 815 cattle examined during 4 visits to a slaughterhouse. PROCEDURE The left hind foot of each animal was examined for gross lesions of PDD. Breed and sex of the animals were recorded. Lesions were examined histologically for pathologic changes and bacteria, especially spirochetes. RESULTS 22 of 76 (29%) dairy cattle and 29 of 739 (4%) beef cattle had gross lesions of PDD. Detection of lesions was not associated with sex of dairy cattle, but male beef cattle were more likely to have lesions of PDD than were female beef cattle. Histologically, acute and chronic lesions were seen; the most severe changes were localized to the stratum corneum. Spirochetes were seen in lesions from 31 of 51 (61%) cattle. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that PDD is common among culled adult cattle. Prevalence was higher in culled adult dairy cattle than in culled adult beef cattle.
