Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the increase of the enzymatic antioxidant defense that takes place in the fetal rat lung at the end of gestation can be accelerated by the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone and diminished by metyrapone, a blocker of glucocorticoid synthesis. Since it is known that the fetal adrenal does not start to synthesize corticosterone until the last 20% of gestation, pregnant rats were bilaterally adrenalectomized on the first day of gestation in order to clarify the role of the endogenous maternal hormone on the development of the enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant systems of fetal lung. This early adrenalectomy did not change fetal lung catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, cytochrome oxidase, GSH, ascorbate, and uric acid at term. The presence of the maternal glands is not essential for lung antioxidant development in the fetus and that the stimulus of fetal corticosterone during the last 20% of gestation is enough to achieve a normal maturation of the fetal lung enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant systems.

Abstract
In order to help clarify whether free radicals are implicated or not in the evolution of maximum life span (MLSP) of animals, a comprehensive study was performed in the liver of various vertebrate species. Strongly significant negative correlations against MLSP were found for hepatic catalase, Se-dependent and -independent glutathione peroxidases, and GSH, whereas superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, ascorbate, uric acid, GSSG/GSH, in vitro peroxidation (TBA-RS), and in vivo steady-state H2O2 concentration in the liver did not correlate with MLSP. Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and GSH results were in agreement with those independently reported by other authors, whereas the rest of our data are reported for the first time. Potential limitations arising from the use of animals of different vertebrate Classes were counterbalanced by the possibility to study animals with very different MLSPs and life energy potentials. Furthermore, the results agreed with previous data obtained using only mammals. Since liver GSSG/GSH, peroxidation, and specially H2O2 concentration were similar in species with widely different MLSPs, it is suggested that the decrease in enzymatic H2O2 detoxifying capacity of longevous species represents an evolutionary co-adaptation with a smaller in vivo rate of free radical generation. We propose the possibility that maximum longevity was increased during vertebrate evolution by lowering the rate of free radical recycling in the tissues.

Abstract
Catalase was continuously inhibited with aminotriazole in the liver and kidney during 33 months in large populations of old and young frogs in order to study the effects of the modification of the tissue antioxidant/prooxidant balance on the life span of a vertebrate species showing an oxygen consumption rate similar to that of humans. Free-radical-related parameters were measured during three consecutive years at 2.5, 14.5, and 26.5 months of experimentation. Aging per se did not decrease antioxidant enzymes and did not increase peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid positive substances, or high-pressure liquid chromatography [HPLC]-malondialdehyde), either cross sectionally or longitudinally. Long-term catalase inhibition leads to time-dependent increases (100-900%) of endogenous superoxide dismutase, GSH, ascorbate, and especially glutathione reductase at 2.5 and 14.5 months of experimentation. This was positively correlated with a higher survival of treated animals (91% in treated versus 46% in controls at 14.5 months of experimentation). The loss of those inductions after 26.5 months leads to a sharp increase in mortality rate. The results show for the first time that simultaneous induction of various tissue antioxidant enzymes and nonenzymatic antioxidants can increase the mean life span of a vertebrate animal. It is concluded that the tissue antioxidant/prooxidant balance is a strong determinant of mean life span.

Abstract
The efficacy and toxicity (specially hepatic) of methotrexate in low doses (7.5 mg/week) was prospectively assessed in 21 patients with rheumatoid arthritis refractory to treatment with gold or penicillamine, during two years. Three patients were prematurely withdrawn from the protocol. A fast and significant improvement of RA was observed during the first six months, which tapered thereafter. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate decreased from 51.5 +/- 20.1 to 27.7 +/- 11.5 mm/h (p < 0.05). A rise in serum transaminases, always raising to less than twice the normal value, was observed in 75% of patients in some moment of the follow up. Hepatic scintigraphy did not show significant changes. Hepatic histological alterations were mild and no changes were observed after two years of treatment. The main secondary effects were moderate and transitory gastrointestinal and hematological disturbances. The prednisone dose was decreased from 6.8 +/- 2.6 to 4.8 +/- 1.9 mg/day at twelve months. There were no withdrawals due to drug toxicity. It is concluded that methotrexate proved to be efficacious in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis refractory to conventional treatments. Its secondary effects, although frequent, were discrete and transitory and there were no changes in liver histology.

Abstract
1. The three main non-enzymatic endogenous soluble antioxidants and three estimators of oxidative stress were measured in the liver, lung and brain of seven animal species of different vertebrate classes. 2. The more concentrated antioxidant was GSH, followed by ascorbate and finally by uric acid. Liver showed higher levels of GSH and uric acid than the other two organs in the majority of the species. 3. GSSG/GSH ratio was highest in lung, probably due to the high pO2 prevalent in the tissue. Nevertheless, this did not result in higher tissue peroxidation, suggesting that the lung antioxidants are capable of coping with a high tissue pO2. 4. Tissue peroxidation was maximal in the brain when assayed by the TBA test, but this was not confirmed by HPLC of malondialdehyde (MDA). HPLC resulted in much lower MDA values than TBA.

Abstract
1. Five antioxidant enzymes and cytochrome oxidase were measured in three vital organs of seven animal species of different vertebrate classes. 2. Minimal superoxide dismutase activities were found in the brain of homeotherms and in the lung of amphibia. Catalase (CAT) was maximal in liver and minimal in brain. 3. Possession of both Se dependent and independent glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is widespread in vertebrate organs. Similarities in tissue distribution were found among enzymes which use hydroperoxides (Se and non-Se GPx and CAT) or glutathione (both GPx and glutathione reductase) as substrates. 4. The results also suggest that the high aerobic capacity of the liver strongly influences the activities of the antioxidant enzymes in this tissue across vertebrate species, whereas other factors such as tissue pO2 can be more important in the lung.

Abstract
Neither parasitological nor molecular diagnosis of leishmaniasis is widely available in clinical settings where American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is endemic. Therefore four clinical prediction rules for ACL were developed which incorporated physical examination findings (clinical rule), physical examination and leishmanin skin test (LST) (clinical-LST rule), physical examination and historical information (clinical-historical rule), or physical examination, historical information and LST (clinical-historical-LST rule). One hundred parasitologically diagnosed ACL cases and 38 cases of chronic skin lesions of other aetiologies comprised the derivation set. The validation set consisted of 124 ACL cases and 35 patients with lesions of other aetiologies. Components of each rule were selected by bivariate analysis, then step-wise logistic regression. Sensitivity, specificity and efficiency were calculated for each score threshold; the threshold achieving greatest efficiency was selected for each rule. When these rules were applied to the validity set the sensitivity, specificity and efficiency were respectively: clinical 93%, 31%, 79%; clinical-LST 90%, 73%, 85.9%; clinical-historical 97%, 51%, 87%; clinical-historical-LST 92%, 70%, 87%. Inclusion of LST skin test consistently improved the specificity of the rules. Should a given clinical setting warrant optimizing either sensitivity or specificity alone, the rule thresholds can be adjusted. These and other prediction rules, once evaluated in other settings, should be incorporated into leishmaniasis control programmes.

Abstract
DNA synthesis in epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi was studied autoradiographically by incorporation of [3H]thymidine in the nuclear and kinetoplast DNA. Both DNA were heavily labelled. Three eukaryotic DNA polymerase inhibitors (aphidicolin, aracytidine, and dideoxythimidine) were chosen to study the nuclear and kinetoplast DNA synthesis in vivo. Inhibition was mainly observed with the nuclear DNA.

Abstract
A comprehensive experimental study on free radical-related parameters was performed in the lung throughout the life span of 220 initially young or old frogs. No age related differences were found transversely or longitudinally for lung superoxide dismutase, catalase, Se-dependent and -independent glutathione peroxidases, glutathione reductase, GSH, GSSG, or GSSG/GSH ratio. Continuous catalase depletion with aminotriazole led to glutathione reductase induction in the lung after 14.5 months of experimentation. This was accompanied by a great increase in survival rate of treated animals in relation to controls (especially in the old group). After 26.5 months of experimentation, glutathione reductase induction was lost and GSSG/GSH values tended to increase. This was followed by a 3-month long period of acute decrease in survival rate of treated animals. It is suggested that a high antioxidant/prooxidant balance is of protective value against causes of early death and can possibly be used in the future (when appropriately controlled) to increase the number of healthy years of the normal life span.

Abstract
Using the social survey technique, a random sample of 464 students from the Universidad Austral answered a structured questionnaire about behavior and attitudes towards sex. Results show that the majority of students have had sexual experiences. Men and women differ significantly in motivations and age at the start of their sexual activity, stability of their relationships, first sexual partner and emotional experiences. Sexual behavior is associated with age, years of university studies and geographical origin. On the contrary this behavior is weakly influenced by religion or family. Premarital sexual intercourse is accepted by the majority of students. Knowledge about sexual physiology and contraception is scarce in 30 to 80% of students. It is concluded that, since a great number of students have an active sexual life along with little knowledge in this topic, the University has to assume an active role in the sexual education of students.

Abstract
Electrical excitability of neurons and muscle cells reflects the actions of a family of structurally related sodium channels. Mutations in the adult skeletal muscle sodium channel have been associated with the inherited neuromuscular disorders paramyotonia congenita (PMC) and hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HPP). We have deciphered the entire genomic structure of the human skeletal muscle sodium channel gene and developed a restriction map of the locus. SCN4A consists of 24 exons spanning 35 kb of distance on chromosome 17q. We describe the sequence of all intron/exon boundaries, the presence of several polymorphisms in the coding sequence, and the locations within introns of two dinucleotide repeat polymorphisms. This is the first sodium channel for which the entire genomic structure has been resolved. The organization of the SCN4A exons relative to the proposed protein structure is presented and represents a foundation for functional and evolutionary comparisons of sodium channels. Knowledge of the exon structure and flanking intron sequences for SCN4A will permit a systematic search for mutations in PMC and HPP.

Abstract
Lipid peroxidation in rat liver and brain has been studied to see if it increases with old age. No significant differences in the level of endogenous, nonstimulated lipid peroxidation (TBA-RS) is found between 9 month-old (mature adults) and 28 month-old animals in liver or cerebral cortex. Liver homogenates subjected in vitro to an oxidative stress (ascorbate-Fe++), show a clearly slower peroxidation rate in old than in young animals. On the other hand, the in vitro peroxidation rate of cerebral homogenates was similar in young and old animals. The in vitro peroxidation rate was much higher in brain than in liver tissue. These results do not support the view that old rats liver and brain are more susceptible to free radical oxidative damage than those of young ones.

Abstract
1. Two DNA polymerases have been partially purified from Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes by DEAE-cellulose, phosphocellulose, and DNA agarose chromatography. 2. Both enzyme activities were characterized by several biochemical criteria. 3. They showed different sensitivity to KCl and displayed characteristic Mg2+ and Mn2+ requirements, although they exhibited almost identical primer-template utilization. 4. The preferred substrates were poly dC-oligo dG, activated calf thymus DNA, and poly dT-oligo rA. 5. Both enzyme fractions are not inhibited by aphidicolin while N-ethylmaleimide and phosphonacetic acid inhibited them to different extents. 6. ButylphenyldGTP strongly inhibited T. cruzi enzyme fraction I while it had no effect on enzyme fraction III. 7. This dGTP analog also inhibited the poly dT-directed polymerization of dAMP as described for other mammalian DNA polymerases. Kinetic studies indicated that butylphenyldGTP inhibited enzyme fraction I in a non-competitive fashion.

Abstract
A rapid and simple method for the simultaneous analysis of uric and ascorbic acid in extracts of animal tissue is described. The method uses reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The technique allows efficient separation of both acids while showing high selectivity, recovery, reproducibility, and sample stability. Calculated levels of both substances in mouse liver tissue were 1.00 +/- 0.05 mumol ascorbic acid/g and 130 +/- 5 nmol uric acid/g.

Abstract
We have compared the action of lipoprotein lipase on liposomes of egg yolk phosphatidylcholine containing less than saturating amounts of trioleoylglycerol (less than 3%) and emulsion droplets of the same lipids. The amounts of the two types of lipid particles (expressed in terms of phosphatidylcholine) needed to reach substrate saturation of the enzyme were similar, indicating similar binding of the lipase to these two lipid/water interfaces. With liposomes, as opposed to emulsion droplets, albumin was not necessary for continued hydrolysis of triacylglycerols, presumably because product fatty acids could be accommodated in the phospholipid bilayer. The maximal rate of trioleoylglycerol hydrolysis was more than 10-fold higher, and the ratio of trioleoylglycerol/phosphatidylcholine hydrolysis was more than 50-fold higher with the emulsion droplets. Qualitatively similar results were obtained with hepatic lipase, and a lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescence. The data suggest that the lipases remained at the interface for several catalytic cycles, and that a continued supply of substrate molecules to the active site favored triacylglycerol entry from the core of the lipid particle, rather than sliding in from the side through lateral diffusion in the surface layer.

Abstract
Cultured Chinese-hamster ovary cells (CHO cells) were found to produce and secrete a lipase, which was identified as a lipoprotein lipase by the following criteria. Its activity was stimulated by serum and apolipoprotein CII, and was inhibited by high salt concentration. The lipase bound to heparin-agarose and co-eluted with 125I-labelled bovine lipoprotein lipase in a salt gradient. A chicken antiserum to bovine lipoprotein lipase inhibited the activity and precipitated a labelled protein of the same apparent size as bovine lipoprotein lipase from media of CHO cells labelled with [35S]methionine. The lipase activity and secretion were similar in growing cells and in cells that had reached confluency. Hence, lipoprotein lipase appears to be expressed constitutively in CHO cells and is not linked to certain growth conditions, as in pre-adipocyte and macrophage cell lines. At 37 degrees C, but not at 4 degrees C, heparin increased the release of lipase to the medium 2-4-fold. This increased release occurred without depletion of cell-associated lipase activity, suggesting that heparin enhanced release of newly synthesized lipase.

We describe a 30-year-old patient with acanthosis nigricans, diabetes mellitus with insulin resistance, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, pigmentary degeneration of the retina and cerebellar, pyramidal and posterior columnar involvement. He had normal mental function, normal hearing and no hexadactyly. The patient had symptoms of both Bardet-Biedl and Alström syndromes, but did not manifest all the main features of either syndrome. This suggests either that the Bardet-Biedl, Alström, Laurence-Moon syndromes (including the variant described by Edwards) have a highly variable expression or that our case is a new variant within this group of syndromes.

Abstract
The galactose-specific lectin from Erythrina rubrinervia crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6, (or P6(5)) with unit cell dimensions a = b = d = 135.1 A, c = 83.0 A. These parameters are compatible with the presence of a dimer with Mr = 60,000 in the asymmetric unit. The crystals are suitable for high-resolution X-ray analysis.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate on calcium release, we used fiber bundles of frog sartorius muscle mechanically permeabilized by a scratching procedure, and we detected increments in calcium concentration by measuring aqueorin light signals. Submicromolar concentrations of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate induced fast calcium-release signals, with a half time to peak of 60 ms or less. Similar responses were elicited by caffeine. The calcium-release signal induced by inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate occurred at pCa values of 7 or lower, and the dose-response curve depended on the ionic composition of the incubation solution. Lower inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate concentrations were needed to induce release when incubation solutions of ionic composition expected to depolarize the transverse tubule membrane were used. Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate was more effective than inositol 1,3,4-trisphosphate, inositol 1,4,5,6-tetrakisphosphate, and inositol 1,4-bisphosphate. The effect of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate was synergistic with that of caffeine, and was not inhibited by heparin. These results, by showing directly that at resting calcium levels inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate elicited calcium release, are consistent with a role for inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate as a chemical modulator in excitation/contraction coupling in skeletal muscle.

Abstract
The effects of the administration of cyclophosphamide to male rats at doses of 400 mg/m2 for a period of 5 days and of 200 mg/m2 over two five-day cycles interrupted by a 21-day break reveal differences in the ultrastructural morphology of gonadotrophic cells between treated animals and normal controls. The ultrastructural data obtained coincide with the results obtained from the measurement of serum FSH and LH levels, indicating hypofunction. A significant fall was also recorded in blood testosterone levels. The two types of treatment did not give rise to morphological or functional differences.

Abstract
There have been several studies indicating that hydrolysis reactions of fatty acid esters catalyzed by lipases proceed through an acyl-enzyme intermediate typical of serine proteases. In particular, one careful kinetic study with the physiologically important enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is consistent with rate-limiting deacylation of such an intermediate. To observe the spectrum of acyl-enzyme and study the mechanism of LPL-catalyzed hydrolysis of substrate, we have used a variety of furylacryloyl substrates including 1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-[(beta-2-furylacryloyl)triacyl]glyceride (DPFATG) to study the intermediates formed during the hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by the enzyme. After isolation and characterization of the molecular weight of adipose LPL, we determined its extinction coefficient at 280 nm to quantitate the formation of any acyl-enzyme intermediate formed during substrate hydrolysis. We observed an intermediate at low pH during the enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis of (furylacryloyl)imidazole. This intermediate builds early in the reaction when a substantial amount of substrate has hydrolyzed but no product, furylacrylate, has been formed. The acyl-enzyme has a lambda max = 305 nm and a molar extinction coefficient of 22,600 M-1 cm-1; these parameters are similar to those for furylacryloyl esters including the serine ester. These data provide the first spectral evidence for a serine acyl-enzyme in lipase-catalyzed reactions. The LPL hydrolysis reaction is base catalyzed, exhibiting two pKa values; the more acidic of these is 6.5, consistent with base catalysis by histidine. The biphasic rates for substrate disappearance or product appearance and the absence of leaving group effect indicate that deacylation of intermediate is rate limiting.

Abstract
Despite the recognized superiority of traditional culture methods to investigate bacteriuria their routine use in population studies is costly. We proposed to use Phase contrast microscopy (PCM) which allows clear visualization of bacteria with no centrifugation or staining. Urine samples from 214 patients were studied by PCM and results compared to those obtained by quantitative culture. MCF had 95% sensitivity and 96% specificity. Therefore, PCM may be used to screen urine samples for further bacteriologic study with the highest chance of obtaining positive cultures.

Abstract
Cyclophosphamide administered at doses of 400 mg/m2/5 days with sacrifice two days later, and 200 mg/m2/5 days with a 21-day break and a further five days of treatment, with sacrifice two days later, provokes similar effects. Functional activity is less marked in untreated and control animals than in treated ones, as the hormone data shows. But the ultrastructure of PRL cells in treated animals indicates the existence of clear hormone synthesis activity, evident in the fusion and clustering of granules at differing stages of maturity, etc.

The met repressor from Escherichia coli has been crystallized in space group P21, with unit cell dimensions a = 35.6 A, b = 62.6 A, c = 44.5 A, beta = 102.4 degrees and one aporepressor dimer per asymmetric unit. Preliminary X-ray diffraction photographs show measurable intensities to beyond 1.5 A resolution, and the crystal form is ideally suited to high-resolution crystallographic analysis (1 A = 0.1 nm).

Abstract
Kinetoplast DNA was isolated from Chilean Trypanosoma cruzi populations and digested with the restriction endonucleases EcoRI, HinfI, HpaII, MspI, and HaeIII. Three major schizodeme groups were discriminated. There was a correlation between the Chilean schizodeme groups (S1, S2, or S3) and the zymodemes known to occur in Chile (Z1, Brazilian Z2 and Bolivian Z2, respectively), although heterogeneity was seen within the schizodeme groups S2 and S3. Standard Brazilian and Bolivian T. cruzi clones (X10 clone 1, Esmeraldo clone 3, SC43 clone 1, and CAN III clone 1) and laboratory strains (Tulahuen and Y) were included in the schizodeme comparisons. SC43 clone 1 had obvious affinities with S3 and X10 clone 1 shared some features with S1 but the other reference stocks could not be definitely assigned to S1, S2, or S3. Fragment patterns and densitometric traces following digestion with HpaII or MspI suggested that kDNA sequences were not methylated.

Abstract
An anti-lysozyme antibody, D1.3, was used as immunogen to obtain syngeneic (Balb/c) monoclonal anti-idiotopic antibodies. The complex between Fab D1.3 and the Fab fragment from the anti-idiotopic antibody E225 has been crystallized. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P2(1), with a = 75.7 A, b = 77.4 A, c = 97.2 A, beta = 111.90 degrees and one molecule of the complex in the asymmetric unit. X-ray photographs show reflections extending to a resolution of about 3 A. Although twinning occurs frequently in the large crystals obtained, this material is suitable for high-resolution X-ray analysis.

Abstract
We have employed a new pseudosubstrate, beta-(2-furyl)propionyl coenzyme A (FPCoA), to study the functional properties of two enzymes, fatty acyl-CoA dehydrogenase from porcine liver and fatty acyl-CoA oxidase from Candida tropicalis, involved in the oxidation of fatty acids. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that the dehydrogenase exhibits oxidase activity at the rate of dissociation of the product charge-transfer complex. This raises the question of the difference in functionality between these two flavoproteins. To investigate these differences, we have compared the pH dependence of product formation, the isotope effects using tetradeuterio-FPCoA, and the spectral properties and chemical reactivity of the product charge-transfer complexes formed with the two enzymes. The pH dependencies of the reaction of FPCoA with electron-transfer flavoprotein (ETF) for the dehydrogenase and of the reaction of FPCoA with O2 for the oxidase are quite similar. Both reactions proceed more rapidly at basic pH values while substrate binds more tightly at acidic pH values. These data for both enzymes are consistent with a mechanism in which enzyme is involved in protonation of the carbonyl group of substrate followed by base-catalyzed removal of the C-2 proton from substrate. The C-2 anion of substrate may then serve as the active species in reduction of enzyme-bound flavin. The deuterium isotope effects for both enzyme systems are primary across the entire pH range, assuring that the chemically important step of substrate oxidation is rate limiting in these steady-state kinetic experiments. Abstract
Kinetic methods for studying the reactions of the "general" fatty acyl CoA dehydrogenase under three sets of substrate and enzyme concentration conditions have been developed. The reaction of butyryl-CoA and electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) can be studied either under steady-state conditions with enzyme at catalytic concentration or under single-turnover conditions with enzyme in excess. Under the latter conditions, acyl-CoA dehydrogenase acts both as a catalyst and an ultimate electron-transfer acceptor. The reductive half-reaction of butyryl-CoA and enzyme can also be studied in a separate kinetic experiment. Comparison of the pH dependences of the rate constants and isotope effects of the steady-state reaction of butyryl-CoA and ETF with the same parameters for the reductive half-reaction is consistent with a mechanism involving transfer of electrons from butyryl-CoA to ETF within a ternary complex. An alternative mechanism in which the reductive half-reaction takes place prior to the binding and reaction of ETF seems unlikely because the pH 8.5 isotope effect on the reductive half-reaction is much larger than that on the complete reaction in spite of the fact that the rates of the reactions are comparable. The pH dependence of the Km for substrate and KI for inhibitor is consistent with a mechanism for transfer of electrons within the ternary complex which involves protonation of the C = O group of substrates. The protonation labilizes the C-2 proton and base catalysis of the removal of the C-2 proton results in the production of the active enzyme-substrate species, namely the C-2 anion of substrate.

Abstract
Exposure of Xenopus laevis oocytes to temperatures above 31 degrees causes a drastic decrease in protein synthesis and a relative increase of a heat shock protein (HSP) of approximate molecular weight of 68,000. A significant increase in the synthesis of HSP is observed after only 5 minutes incubation of oocytes at 35 degrees. Oocytes that have suffered heat shock immediately prior to treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin or progesterone can respond by undergoing meiotic maturation almost as efficiently as control cells. Also oocytes that are maturing and have gone through the breakdown of the nuclear membrane with concomitant chromosome condensation can synthesize HSP in response to heat shock treatment. These results support the idea that the synthesis of HSP in these cells is regulated at the post-transcriptional level.

Abstract
A convenient catecholamine transport assay has been developed which permits continuous, instantaneous monitoring of transmembrane flux. Epinephrine transport has been examined by spectrophotometrically monitoring adrenochrome formation resulting from the passive diffusion of catecholamine into unilamellar phospholipid vesicles containing entrapped potassium ferricyanide. Ferricyanide oxidation of epinephrine under the conditions employed is fast compared to membrane transport, which obviates the need for intravesicular concentration or volume determinations. Epinephrine transport data over a pH 6 to 7 range have been fitted to an integrated rate equation from which a permeability coefficient for neutral epinephrine of 2.7 1.5 X 10-6 cm/sec has been obtained.
