Abstract
BACKGROUND Concerns associated with blended enteral feeds include the risk of blocked tubes and microbial contamination, although the available evidence is limited. The present laboratory-based investigation aimed to examine these risks in a blended feed providing a nutritionally adequate intake for a hypothetical patient. METHODS A one-blended feed recipe was made using three different methods (professional, jug and stick blenders) and three storage procedures. Feed samples were syringed via 10-, 12- and 14-French (Fr) enteral feeding tubes and both blockages and the time taken were recorded. Feed samples were diluted, plated on agars, incubated and bacterial colony-forming units (CFU) counted. After storage at -80 °C, identification was undertaken using 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction sequencing. RESULTS Two blockages occurred during 27 administrations of feed made using a professional blender, although they were resolved with a water flush. No blockages occurred with the 14-Fr tube and administration was quicker with wider tubes (P < 0.00001). There was no significant difference between the total bacterial CFU of feeds prepared using different methods (P = 0.771) or stored differently. The genus of bacteria identified included Enterococcus, Bacillus, lactose-fermenting Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus. Pathogens, such as Clostridium spp., Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp., were not identified by phenotypic tests used. Sequencing identified Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Streptococcus lutetiensis and Staphylococcus epidermidis. CONCLUSIONS The present study found no risk of tube blockages when one blended feed recipe made using three methods was delivered via a 14-Fr tube. There is concern about bacterial contamination, although this was not influenced by the methods of preparation or storage used in the present study.

Abstract
Previous analyses of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) combined with the remediation of heavy metal pollution in soil have largely been performed under potting or greenhouse conditions, and in situ remediation experiments under field conditions have rarely been reported. In this study, the effects of the metal-resistant PGPB Microbacterium oxydans JYC17, Pseudomonas thivervalensis Y1-3-9, and Burkholderia cepacia J62 on soil Cu pollution under rape remediation were studied in the farmland surrounding the Nanjing Jiuhuashan copper mining region in China. Following inoculation treatment for 50 days, the biomasses of the rape inoculated with strains JYC17, Y1-3-9, and J62 increased, and the total amounts of Cu uptake increased by 113.38, 66.26, and 67.91%, respectively, the translocation factor (TF) of rape inoculated with J62 was 0.85, a significant increase of 70.68%, thus improving the Cu remediation efficiency of the rape. Y1-3-9 and J62 affected the bioavailability of Cu in the soil, and the water-soluble Cu contents were increased by 10.13 and 41.77%, respectively, compared with the control. The antioxidant activities in the rape leaves showed that the tested bacteria increased the contents of antioxidant non-enzymatic substances, including ascorbic acid (ASA) and glutathione (GSH), which were increased by 40.24-91.22% and 9.89-17.67%, respectively, thereby reducing the oxidative stress caused by heavy metals and the contents of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and peroxidase (POD). PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) was used to analyze the effects of the tested bacteria on the cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent bacterial communities in the root endosphere and rhizosphere soil of the rape. The sequencing results of the DGGE bands indicated that the tested bacteria colonized the endosphere and rhizosphere, and they became an important component of the cultivation-dependent bacteria. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of the DGGE profile and similarity cluster analysis showed that the tested bacteria affected the cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent bacterial communities in the root endosphere and rhizosphere. In this experiment, the effects and mechanisms of the combined plant-microbe remediation under field conditions were preliminarily studied, and the results are expected to provide a theoretical basis for future combined remediation experiments.

Abstract
Ionic zinc is considered as an environmental pollutant. This work systematically investigated leaching mechanisms of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) pastes incorporated with/without ZnCl2 under the attacks of chloride and/or sulfate. The leaching behaviors of CSA pastes in the leaching solution are in-situ and continuously monitored by innovative non-contact electrical impedance measurement (NCEIM) and pH meter. The dissolution and diffusion during the leaching process are experimentally identified. Other techniques are also performed to verify the finding of NCEIM: the ion chromatograph and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer reveal the leaching or decomposition sequence of CSA pastes during the leaching process. Besides, results from XRD and SEM techniques demonstrate that main solid products in CSA pastes are ettringite and calcium monosulfoaluminate hydrates. The incorporation of Zn in the pastes has great impact on the decomposition of CSA pastes in the temperature elevation. External chloride and/or sulfate attacks significantly alter the pore structure of CSA pastes during the leaching process.

Abstract
Nicotine and cannabis use during adolescence has the potential to induce long lasting changes on affective and cognitive function. Here, we examined whether adolescent exposure to nicotine, the cannabinoid agonist WIN55-212,2 (WIN), or co-exposure to both would alter operant learning, locomotion, and anxiety- and reward-related behaviors in male and female mice during adulthood. Males exposed to a moderate dose of WIN (2 mg/kg) or co-exposed to nicotine and the moderate dose of WIN exhibited decreased anxiety-associated behaviors and increased cognitive flexibility, but did not differ in operant learning or generalized locomotion. In contrast, differences were not found among the females in these measures at the moderate WIN dose or in both sexes with exposure to a low WIN dose (0.2 mg/kg). Furthermore, a sex-dependent dissociative effect was found in natural reward consumption. Males exposed to the moderate dose of WIN or co-exposed to nicotine and the moderate dose of WIN demonstrated increased sucrose consumption. In contrast, females exposed to the moderate dose of WIN exhibited a decrease in sucrose consumption, which was ameliorated with co-administration of nicotine. Together, these novel findings demonstrate that adolescent exposure to cannabinoids in the presence or absence of nicotine results in altered affective and reward-related behaviors during adulthood.

Abstract
Background We aimed to assess current treatment patterns and outcomes in elderly patients with localized gastric and esophageal (ge) cancers. Methods This retrospective analysis considered patients 75 years of age or older with ge cancers treated during 2012-2014. Patient demographics and tumour characteristics were collected. Overall survival (os) and disease-free survival were assessed by univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusting for demographics. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine factors affecting treatment choices. Results The 110 patients in the study cohort had a median age of 81 years (range: 75-99 years). Primary disease sites were esophageal (55%) and gastric (45%). Treatment received included radiation therapy alone (29%), surgery alone (26%), surgery plus perioperative therapy (14%), chemoradiation alone (10%), and supportive care alone (14%). In multivariable analyses, surgery (hazard ratio: 0.48; 95% confidence interval: 0.26 to 0.90; p = 0.02) was the only independent predictor for improved os. Patients with a good Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (p = 0.008), gastric disease site (p = 0.02), and adenocarcinoma histology (p = 0.01) were more likely to undergo surgery. Conclusions At our institution, few patients 75 years of age and older received multimodality therapy for localized ge cancers. Outcomes were better for patients who underwent surgery than for those who did not. To ensure optimal treatment selection, comprehensive geriatric assessment should be considered for patients 75 years of age and older with localized ge cancers.

Abstract
Essentials The rs773902 SNP results in differences in platelet protease-activated receptor (PAR4) function. The functional consequences of rs773902 were analyzed in human platelets and stroke patients. rs773902 affects thrombin-induced platelet function, PAR4 desensitization, stroke association. Enhanced PAR4 Thr120 effects on platelet function are blocked by ticagrelor. SUMMARY: Background F2RL3 encodes protease-activated receptor (PAR) 4 and harbors an A/G single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs773902) with racially dimorphic allelic frequencies. This SNP mediates an alanine to threonine substitution at residue 120 that alters platelet PAR4 activation by the artificial PAR4-activation peptide (PAR4-AP) AYPGKF. Objectives To determine the functional effects of rs773902 on stimulation by a physiological agonist, thrombin, and on antiplatelet antagonist activity. Methods Healthy human donors were screened and genotyped for rs773902. Platelet function in response to thrombin was assessed without and with antiplatelet antagonists. The association of rs773902 alleles with stroke was assessed in the Stroke Genetics Network study. Results As compared with rs773902 GG donors, platelets from rs773902 AA donors had increased aggregation in response to subnanomolar concentrations of thrombin, increased granule secretion, and decreased sensitivity to PAR4 desensitization. In the presence of PAR1 blockade, this genotype effect was abolished by higher concentrations of or longer exposure to thrombin. We were unable to detect a genotype effect on thrombin-induced PAR4 cleavage, dimerization, and lipid raft localization; however, rs773902 AA platelets required a three-fold higher level of PAR4-AP for receptor desensitization. Ticagrelor, but not vorapaxar, abolished the PAR4 variant effect on thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. A significant association of modest effect was detected between the rs773902 A allele and stroke. Conclusion The F2RL3 rs773902 SNP alters platelet reactivity to thrombin; the allelic effect requires P2Y12 , and is not affected by gender. Ticagrelor blocks the enhanced reactivity of rs773902 A platelets. PAR4 encoded by the rs773902 A allele is relatively resistant to desensitization and may contribute to stroke risk.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Because of the recent increase in type 2 diabetes and the need for complementary treatments in remote communities in many parts of the world, we undertook a study of treatments for diabetic symptoms used by traditional Q'eqchi' Maya healers of Belize. We used quantitative ethnobotany to rank culturally important taxa and subsequent pharmacological and phytochemical studies to assess bioactivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Antidiabetic plants identified in field interviews with traditional healers were ranked by syndromic importance value (SIV) based on 15 symptoms of diabetes. Species ranked with high SIV were tested in an assay relevant to many diabetes complications, the advanced glycation endproduct (AGE) inhibition assay. Active principles were identified by phytochemical analysis and bioassay. RESULTS We collected over 70 plant species having a promising SIV score. The plants represented a broad range of neotropical taxa. Selected Q'eqchi' antidiabetic plants with high SIV were collected in bulk and tested in the advanced glycation endproduct (AGE) inhibition assay. All plant extracts showed AGE inhibition and the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) ranged from 40.8 to 733 µg/mL, while the most active species was Tynanthus guatemalensis Donn (Bignoniaceae). A linear regression showed a significant relationship between 1/ IC50 and SIV. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of verbascoside, as a major component and active principle of the T guatemalensis which had an IC50 = 5.1 µg/mL, comparable to the positive control quercetin. CONCLUSION The results reveal a rich botanical tradition of antidiabetic symptom treatments among the Q'eqchi'. Study of highly ranked plants revealed their activity in AGE inhibition correlated with SIV. T. guatemalensis was identified as a promising species for further evaluation and local use.
