Abstract
It has been shown that the accuracy of mammographic abnormality detection methods is strongly dependent on the breast tissue characteristics, where a dense breast drastically reduces detection sensitivity. In addition, breast tissue density is widely accepted to be an important risk indicator for the development of breast cancer. Here, we describe the development of an automatic breast tissue classification methodology, which can be summarized in a number of distinct steps: 1) the segmentation of the breast area into fatty versus dense mammographic tissue; 2) the extraction of morphological and texture features from the segmented breast areas; and 3) the use of a Bayesian combination of a number of classifiers. The evaluation, based on a large kappa = 0.81 and 0.67 for the two data sets) between automatic and expert-based Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System mammographic density assessment.

Abstract
A longitudinal entomological and epidemiological study was conducted in five localities of southern Venezuela between January 1999 and April 2000 to determine the abundance, biting behaviour and parity of anopheline mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in relation to climate variables and malaria incidence. A total of 3685 female anopheline mosquitoes, representing six species, were collected. The most abundant species were Anopheles marajoara Galvão & Damasceno (60.7%) and Anopheles darlingi Root (35.1%), which together represented 95.8% of the total anophelines collected. Abundance and species distribution varied by locality. Malaria prevalence varied from 12.5 to 21.4 cases per 1000 population. Transmission occurred throughout the year; the annual parasite index (API) for the study period was 813.0 cases per 1000 population, with a range of 71.6-2492 per 1000 population, depending on locality. Plasmodium vivax (Grassi & Feletti) (Coccidia: Plasmodiidae) accounted for 78.6% of cases, Plasmodium falciparum (Welch) for 21.4% and mixed infections (Pv+Pf) for < 0.1%. Anopheles marajoara and An. darlingi were more abundant during the rainy season (April-September). There was no significant correlation (P > 0.05) between mosquito abundance and rainfall. Correlations between malaria incidence by parasite species and mosquito abundance were not significant (P > 0.05). Monthly parous rates were similar for An. marajoara and An. darlingi throughout the year, with two peaks that coincided with the dry-rainy transition period and the period of less rain. Peaks in the incidence of malaria cases were observed 1 month after major peaks in biting rates of parous anophelines. Anopheles darlingi engages in biting activity throughout the night, with two minor peaks at 23.00-00.00 hours and 03.00-04.00 hours. Anopheles marajoara has a different pattern, with a biting peak at 19.00-21.00 hours and 76.6% of biting occurring before midnight. Although both vectors bite indoors and outdoors, they showed a highly significant (P < 0.01) degree of exophagic behaviour. The present study constitutes the first effort to characterize the bionomics of anophelines in malaria endemic foci in different ecological situations in relation to malaria transmission in southern Venezuela and to provide relevant information to be considered when planning and implementing vector control programmes.

Abstract
A methodology for the conformational study of cyclic systems through the statistical analysis of torsion angles is presented. It relies on a combination of different methods based on a probabilistic model which takes into account the topological symmetry of the structures. This methodology is applied to copper complexes double-bridged by phosphate and related ligands. Structures from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) are analyzed and the chair, boat-chair and boat conformations are identified as the most frequent conformations. The output of the methodology also provides information about distortions from the ideal conformations, the most frequent being: chair ↔ twist-chair, chair ↔ twist-boat-chair and boat ↔ twist-boat. Molecular mechanics calculations identify these distortions as energetically accessible pathways.

Abstract
18120 Background: Paclitaxel is an active drug for NSCLC. Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of biweekly administration of this drug in previously treated patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods: Patients with stage IIIB and IV NSCLC, which progressed after or during first-line chemotherapy, measurable disease, ECOG PS=0–1 and adequate organ function were included. Paclitaxel was administered at 150 mg/m2 iv, days 1 and 14, every 28 days, for a maximum of six cycles. Both, toxicity and efficacy analyses, were performed on the intent-to-treat (ITT) population. Results: Between September 2004 and November 2006, 42 patients (M/F, 39/3) were included, with median age 64 years (39–79). Tumor histology mainly included epidermoid (40.5%) and adenocarcinoma (35.7%). Tumor stage was IIIB (23.8%) and IV (76.2%). Median number of metastatic lesions was 1 (55%), located mainly in lymph nodes (30%), lung (25%), adrenal glands (16%) and bone (11%). Previous chemotherapy included platinum (76.1%), docetaxel (66.6%) and gemcitabine (52.4%). A total of 167 cycles (median 4, range 1–6) were administered. Median relative dose intensity was 94%. Toxicity: Grade III/IV hematologic toxicities per patient were neutropenia (2.5%) and anemia (2.5%). Grade III/IV non-hematologic toxicities were asthenia (2.5%), arthralgias/myalgias (2.5%) and peripheral neuropathy (2.5%). Efficacy: Of 39 ITT patients (3 patients have just begun chemotherapy), 7 achieved PR, 11 SD and 16 progressed, resulting in an ORR of 17.95% (95% CI: 5.9–30%). Five patients could not be evaluated for response due to early withdrawal (4 tumor-related exitus and 1 PS deterioration). Median TTP and OS were 174 days (95% CI: 115.52–232.48) and 332 days (95% CI: 261.18–402.82), respectively. Conclusions: Biweekly paclitaxel is an active and very well tolerated regimen in previously treated patients with advanced NSCLC. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute liver injury of uncertain aetiology is often drug related and quantitative information about the associated risk is scarce. AIM To estimate the risk of acute liver injury associated with the use of drugs. METHODS In a population survey study, 126 cases of acute liver injury were prospectively assembled from January 1993 to December 1999, in patients over 15 years of age, in 12 hospitals in Barcelona (Spain). We estimated the relative risk for each drug as the ratio between the incidence of acute liver injury among the exposed population to the drug and the incidence of acute liver injury among those not exposed to it. Drug consumption data were used to estimate the exposed population. RESULTS Isoniazid, pyrazinamide, rifampicin, amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, erythromicin, chlorpromazine, nimesulide, and ticlopidine presented the highest risk (point relative risk > 25). Amoxicillin, metoclopramide, captopril and enalapril, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, fluoxetine, paroxetine, diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, metamizole, low-dose acetylsalicylic acid and salbutamol showed the lowest risk (point relative risk < 5). CONCLUSIONS This study provides a risk estimation of serious liver disease for various drugs that will be useful in its diagnosis and management, and when comparing with the drug therapeutic benefit in each indication. Some observed associations would be worth specific studies.

Abstract
The antigenic phenotype of cultured human osteoblast-like cells, their ability to phagocytose particles of different nature and size, and their capacity to stimulate allogeneic T cells suggest that they are related to other cell populations with which they may also have immunological functions in common. The objective of this study was to investigate the intracytoplasmatic presence of cytokines and their modulation by different biomolecules. Immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry were used to study the expression of IL-4, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, and IFNgamma cytokines. To investigate whether FGF, TGF, PDGF, IL-1, and IFNgamma modulate expression of these cytokines in cultured human osteoblast-like cells we used flow cytometry. IL-4, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, and IFNgamma cytokines were expressed by all the cultured human osteoblast-like cells studied. Treatment with FGF and TGFbeta1 reduced the percentage expression and fluorescence intensity of the cytokines. PDGF treatment enhanced their fluorescence intensity but did not modify their expression. IL-1 treatment produced a small reduction in expression and fluorescence intensity of IL-12 and IL-15, but did not produce major changes in the expression of IL-4, IL-18, or IFNgamma. IFNgamma markedly increased the fluorescence intensity of the cytokines. The results indicate that human osteoblast-like cells may perform immunological functions (e.g., synthesizing cytokines with immune regulator function) that can be modulated by different biomolecules related to bone tissue and/or immune response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin testing with major and minor determinants of benzylpenicillin is recommended standard practice for the evaluation of patients with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactams. However, commercial reagents for this purpose were recently dropped from the European market. OBJECTIVE In the present study, we assessed a new brand of reagents for use in skin testing in patients with suspected penicillin allergy. METHODS Prick tests and intradermal tests were performed with benzylpenicilloyl polylysine (PPL) and minor determinant mixture (MDM). Penicillin G, amoxicillin, and the culprit beta-lactam were also tested. If skin tests were negative, a single-blind oral challenge test was performed with the culprit active principle or penicillin. If both skin tests and challenge tests were negative, the same procedure was repeated between 2 and 4 weeks later. RESULTS A total of 636 patients were assessed. The allergy study was positive in 69 patients. Skin tests with PPL were positive in 30 patients (46.8%) and with MDM in 28 (43.7%). Sixteen patients displayed a positive reaction to both PPL and MDM (25%), while 42 patients (65.6%) had a positive reaction to either PPL or MDM alone. Thirty-two patients had positive skin test reactions to penicillin G or another p-lactam antibiotic. Five patients in whom a negative result was obtained in skin tests had a positive reaction to oral challenge. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that a new brand of determinants that is commercially available in Europe is a reliable and useful tool for the diagnosis of beta-lactam allergy. The new reagents are a safe alternative to the previously available brand.

Abstract
Background/AimsRecent reports demonstrated that osteoblast-like cells can also exert activities directly associated with the immune system (cytokine synthesis, antigen presentation, phagocytosis and stimulation of T lymphocytes). The present study aimed to analyze the effect of Transforming growth factorβ1 (TGFβ1), Fibroblast growth factor basic (FGFb), Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Interleukin-2 (IL-2), Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Interferon-γ (IFNγ) on the expression on osteoblast-like cells of antigens involved in antigen presentation.MethodsFlow cytometry was used to investigate whether the growth factors FGFb, TGFβ1, PDGF-BB, IL-2, IL-1β, LPS and IFNγ modulate the expression on cultured human osteoblast-like cells of different antigens involved in antigen-presentation and T cell activation.ResultsTGFβ1 treatment significantly reduced the expression of CD54 and CD86. IL-1β treatment significantly enhanced the expression of CD54, CD86 and HLA-DR. LPS and IFNγ treatments produced a major increase in CD54, CD80, CD86 and HLA-DR expression. Expression of these antigen-presenting molecules was not significantly modified by FGFb, PDGF-BB or IL-2 treatment.

Abstract
17016 Background: Platinum therapy has been the backbone treatment in NSCLC. The concomitant use of platinum derivatives and taxanes has shown high antitumoral activity with moderate toxicity. To improve the therapeutic index of this combination, we performed a study with biweekly carboplatin and docetaxel. Primary objective was determination of objective response rate (ORR). Secondary objectives were time to progression, tolerability and overall survival. Methods: Patients histologically confirmed of non-small cell lung cancer, aged ≥ 18, ECOG PS 0–2, measurable lesion according RECIST criteria, adequate bone marrow, renal and hepatic function were included. Prior chemotherapy was not allowed. Patients received treatment with a combination of Docetaxel 50 mg/m2 and Carboplatin AUC-4 each 15 days for a maximum of 8 cycles. Results: Fifty patients were included between March 2004 and July 2005, 84% were male, median age was 63 years old (range 48–77), 78% had ECOG PS 0–1 and 64% of patients had stage IV. Histology was squamous cell carcinoma (54%) adenocarcinoma (36%) and large cell carcinoma (10%). A total 316 cycles were administrated (median 7, Range 1–12). Over 46 evaluable patients for response, one achieved CR, 13 PR, 21 SD and 11 PD, with an overall response rate of 30.5% (95% CI: 17.2–43.8). Median follow up of patients is 8.3 months, with a median TTP of 6.3 months and median overall survival of 11.1 months. Grade 3–4 toxicity per patient was: neutropenia (22.0%), asthenia (16.0%), anaemia (10.0%), thrombocytopenia (2%), mucositis (2%) and nauseas (2%). Conclusions: These results suggest that biweekly schedule of carboplatin / docetaxel is a safe and active regimen in first line advanced NSCLC patients. Abstract
The neurotrophin family of growth factors, which includes Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Neurotrophin-3 (NT3) and Neurotrophin-4/5 (NT4/5) bind and activate specific tyrosine kinase (Trk) receptors to promote cell survival and growth of different cell populations. For these reasons, growing attention has been paid to the use of neurotrophins as therapeutic agents in neurodegeneration, and to the regulation of the expression of their specific receptors by the ligands. BDNF expression, as revealed by immunohistochemistry, is found in the pre-subiculum, CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Strong TrkB immunoreactivity is present in most CA3 neurons but only in scattered neurons of the CA1 area. Weak TrkB immunoreactivity is found in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus. Unilateral grafting of BDNF-transfected fibroblasts into the hippocampus resulted in a marked increase in the intensity of the immunoreaction and in the number of TrkB-immunoreactive neurons in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus, pre-subiculum and CA1 area in the vicinity of the graft. No similar effects were produced after the injection of control mock-transfected fibroblasts. Delayed cell death in the CA1 area was produced following 5 min of forebrain ischemia in the gerbil. The majority of living cells in the CA1 area at the fourth day were BDNF/TrkB immunoreactive. Unilateral grafting of control mock-transfected or BDNF fibroblasts two days before ischemia resulted in a moderate non-specific protection of TrkB-negative, but not TrkB-positive cells, in the CA1 area of the grafted side. This finding is in line with a vascular and glial reaction, as revealed, by immunohistochemistry using astroglial and microglial cell markers. This astroglial response was higher in the grafted side than in the contralateral side in ischemic gerbils, but no differences were seen between BDNF-producing and non-BDNF-producing grafts. However, grafting of BDNF-producing fibroblasts two days before ischemia significantly and specifically prevented nerve cells from dying in the CA1 area of the ipsilateral hippocampus. Cell survival was associated with increased TrkB immunoreactivity as the majority of living cells were TrkB immunoreactive. Thus, our results show that BDNF is able to up-regulate the expression of TrkB in control and pathological states, and that BDNF prevention of neuronal death following transient forebrain ischemia is associated with increased expression of its specific receptor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of a multi-disciplinary non-pharmacological intervention to reduce cardiovascular mortality and hospital re-admissions due to heart failure. DESIGN Randomised, open, controlled, parallel, multi-centre prospective clinical trial. SETTING Sardenya Primary Care Centre (PCC), les Corts PCC, "El Remei" PCC (Vic Sud), Vall d'Hebron Hospital, Hospital Clínic, Vic Hospital, Hospital Dos de Maig. PARTICIPANTS 300 patients diagnosed with heart failure. INTERVENTION Monthly home visits with intercalated phone calls from very well trained nursing staff to provide education on the illness and treatments, optimise therapy compliance, and inform on self-monitoring and management (especially early detection and treatment of decompensation). MAIN MEASUREMENTS Combined variable of mortality for cardiovascular reasons and re-hospitalisation due to heart failure (via Casualty and/or Admissions) at 1 year. Health-related quality of life. DISCUSSION Open study, as it is impossible to mask the intervention. The home intervention is not too complex and is easily performed by well-trained health professionals. Its use could be generalised, if a clinically relevant degree of efficacy was shown.

Abstract
Two methods for the classification of eight-membered rings based on a Bayesian analysis are presented. The two methods share the same probabilistic model for the measurement of torsion angles, but while the first method uses the canonical forms of cyclooctane and, given an empirical sequence of eight torsion angles, yields the probability that the associated structure corresponds to each of the ten canonical conformations, the second method does not assume previous knowledge of existing conformations and yields a clustering classification of a data set, allowing new conformations to be detected. Both methods have been tested using the conformational classification of Csp3 eight-membered rings described in the literature. The methods have also been employed to classify the solid-state conformation in Csp3 eight-membered rings using data retrieved from an updated version of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD).

Abstract
Anopheles (Anopheles) neomaculipalpus Curry (Diptera: Culicidae) collected by human landing catches and light traps in southern Venezuela were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of Plasmodium circumsporozoite (CS) protein. A total of 356 An. neomaculipalpus were collected, of which three (0.84%) were positive for P. vivax, two for the variant 247 and one for the variant 210. The overall sporozoite rate in An. neomaculipalpus was similar to that for the principal vector An. (Nyssorhynchus) darlingi Root (0.82%) and higher than in An. (Nys.) marajoara Galvão & Damasceno (0.27%). This is the first report of An. neomaculipalpus naturally infected with Plasmodium parasites in Venezuela.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mustard IgE-mediated allergy is supposed to be a rare cause of food allergy, and its clinical features and cross-reactivities have not been fully elucidated. METHODS A prospective study was carried out, recruiting mustard allergic patients, and paired control subjects. A clinical questionnaire was administered, and skin-prick tests (SPT) with panels of aeroallergens and foods, serum extraction for in vitro tests and double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFC) were performed. RESULTS Thirty-eight mainly adult patients, with 10.5% reporting systemic anaphylaxis, were included in the study [age (mean +/- SD): 21.9 +/- 8.6 years]. DBPCFC were performed in 24 patients, being positive in 14 cases (58.3%). Patients with positive outcome showed significantly greater mustard SPT than those with negative outcome (8.2 +/- 3.7 vs 5.3 +/- 2.4 mm, P <0.05), and the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis yielded a cut-off value for mustard commercial SPT of 8 mm, with a specificity of 90% (95% CI, 55.5-98.3), and a sensitivity of 50% (95% CI, 23.1-76.9). A significant association between mustard hypersensitivity and mugwort pollen sensitization was found (97.4% of patients), with partial cross-reactivity demonstrated by UniCAP System inhibition assays. All patients showed sensitization to other members of Brassicaceae family, and cross-reactivity among them was also confirmed. Moreover, significant associations with nut (97.4%), leguminous (94.7%), corn (78.9%), and Rosaceae fruit (89.5%) sensitizations were also shown. Around 40% of these food sensitizations were symptomatic, including food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in six patients. CONCLUSIONS Mustard allergy is a not-uncommon disorder that can induce severe reactions. Significant associations with mugwort pollinosis and several plant-derived food allergies are demonstrated, suggesting a new mustard-mugwort allergy syndrome. A relationship between this syndrome and food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis is also reported.

Abstract
A standard field trial was carried out to assess the effect of a commercial Neospora-vaccine based on whole killed tachyzoites (Bovilis-Neoguard, Intervet) on the abortion rate. Eight hundred and seventy-six cows, over 2.5 months pregnant, belonging to 25 Costa Rican dairy herds, were used in the analysis. For each cow vaccinated, a cow of the same herd, breed and age category, was selected as control. The period of administration of treatments extended from June to November of 2000. The treatments were administered in two, 5-ml doses 1 month apart, the first dose given between day 75 and 90 of gestation. The incidence of abortion among all treated cows was of 16.0% (140/876). The treatment specific incidence was 11.2% (49/438) and 20.8% (91/438) for the vaccinated and the placebo group, respectively. The prevented fraction by vaccination amounted to 0.46 (95% CI: 0.26, 0.61), and the cumulative incidence ratio for the vaccinated group was 0.54. The Cox hazard ratio was 0.51(95% CI: 0.37, 0.72), meaning that the force of abortion is reduced twice in the vaccinated group. The results of this study, the first one following this type of design, shows that the killed whole Neospora caninum tachyzoite preparation had a reasonable effect on the abortion rate in Costa Rican dairy cattle.

Abstract
This study examines patterns of growth and nutritional status of indigenous Tsimane' children under 9 years of age (n = 199 boys and 210 girls), based on a cross-sectional sample from 58 villages from the Beni Deparment of lowland Bolivia. Compared with US children, Tsimane' children are quite short, with linear growth tracking at or below the US 5th centile in both sexes. The prevalence of low height-for-age ("stunting;" HA Z-scores </=-2) is 52% in boys and 43% in girls. In contrast, weight-for-height in Tsimane' children approximates the US median, with the prevalence of low weight-for-height ("wasting"; WH Z-scores </=-2) being only 4% and 6% in boys and girls, respectively. Tsimane' boys and girls are leaner than their US peers, but their levels of body fatness are not so low as to indicate severe energy stress. Arm muscularity of Tsimane' children is similar to that of their US age peers, and this suggests that they are not experiencing acute protein malnutrition. Variation in measures of nutritional status of Tsimane' children is modestly correlated with village-level differences. Degree of isolation, as measured by distance to urban centers or to primary forest, was not a strong predictor of children's anthropometric status. Rather, in both boys and girls, nutritional status was most strongly associated with number of teachers in the village, a measure of access to education. Comparative analyses indicate that high levels of statural growth stunting are common among indigenous populations throughout lowland South America. This problem appears to be largely attributable to poor dietary quality (diets low in key micronutrients) and high disease loads. Further research is needed to identify the specific causes and potential interventions for the high rates of childhood growth stunting in this region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The antigen phenotype of human osteoblast-like cells suggests that they are related to other cellular populations and may also have immunologic functions in common. METHODS Flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy were used to show the phagocytotic activity of osteoblast-like cells in culture. The allogeneic stimulation of T cells by human osteoblast-like cells was determined by the measurement of T cell proliferation. RESULTS We demonstrated in vitro that human osteoblast-like cells isolated from normal bone specimens obtained during mandibular osteotomy can phagocytose particles of different nature and size and can stimulate allogeneic T cells. Phagocytosis of microorganisms (E.coli, Klebsiella or C. albicans) was observed, although at a very low rate of activity in comparison with the phagocytosis of latex particles. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that human osteoblast-like cells may perform immunologic functions and act as antigen presentation cells.

Abstract
At our laboratory, we have recently demonstrated the immunohistochemical expression of aromatase P450 in the pituitary glands of adult rats; this expression was seen to be sex-dependent. In order to determine whether the changes in the expression of the enzyme are related to changes in the gonadal sphere and whether the expression of the enzyme is related to the postnatal differentiation of hypophyseal cytology, in the present work we performed an immunohistochemical study in the rat pituitary gland from birth to old age. The immunohistochemical reaction to aromatase was evident and very generalized at 7 days after birth, with no large differences between the male and female animals. At 14 days the immunohistochemical reaction was decreased in the females, with no changes in the males. At 17 days, aromatase immunoreactivity in the pituitary glands of female rats was very weak whereas the males showed large numbers of reactive cells. These observations were further pronounced at 21 days and 2 months of life. At 24 months, the immunoreactivity found in the pituitary glands of the male rats had almost completely disappeared. Our results show that a postnatal differentiation in the immunohistochemical expression of aromatase occurs; this is tightly linked to sexual activity and is lost in old age. This suggests that hypophyseal aromatase would be related to the mechanisms of action of gonadal steroids on hypophyseal differentiation and secretion.

Abstract
In pathogenicity studies of 31 Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates preserved using Castellani's method we intraperitoneally inoculated 104 young adult hamsters and found laminated concentric structures and calcified appearance that resembled Schaumann bodies, in 43 of them, especially in animals with apparently good condition. We characterized these structures histologically and histochemically using different stains (PAS, Grocott, haematoxylin-eosin, Von Kossa). The Von Kossa staining revealed calcium in these structures. Similar structures have been described in patients with sarcoidosis and also in hamsters inoculated with P. brasiliensis. We found no correlation between the presence of these calcifications and serum calcium levels.

Abstract
Twenty-five mature Brahman (Bos indicus) extensively reared breeding bulls were clinically examined and electroejaculated at monthly intervals for 13 months to study if testicular consistency (TC), scrotal circumference (SC), sperm motility and morphology show seasonal variation under tropical conditions. Changes in SC were positively related to body condition (BC) (beta = 0.7 cm, P < 0.001) and age (P < 0.01). These changes were, however, not associated with deviations in TC, sperm motility or morphology (P > 0.05). Sperm motility was higher in samples collected during the breeding season than in samples collected at other times (62 versus 52%, LSM, P < 0.01). The frequency of bent tails with cytoplasmic droplet entrapped fluctuated between monthly ejaculates, (LSM range 3-21%, P < 0.05). However, there was no relationship between these fluctuations and environmental temperature, rainfall or changes in BC, TC or SC of the bulls (P > 0.05). Other sperm abnormalities did not change significantly during the study period. The absence of a relationship between any of the climatic variables studied and SC, TC and sperm motility or morphology, respectively, indicates that temperature is not a main factor influencing reproductive performance in Brahman bulls in the tropics. On the contrary, the changes found in BC followed by variations in SC suggest that nutrition may be a major factor affecting seasonal variations in male reproductive parameters, especially testicular size, in these sires.

Abstract
Despite the recent progress in the management of cervical carcinoma, treatment failure is quite common and therefore it is necessary to identify predicting factors for tumor response. It is known that both cell proliferation and apoptosis determine the tumor growth index (TGI) which reflects the overall contribution of gene defects. Here we explored whether the TGI index could be a better predictor of response in comparison to cell proliferation or apoptosis as separate phenomena. Twenty-five patients with cervical carcinoma treated with radiation alone or neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus surgery were analyzed. Cell proliferation and apoptosis determined by PCNA immunohistochemical expression and tumor nucleosomes by ELISA, respectively, were used to calculate the TGI, which was analyzed with regard to early tumor response. Our results show that most patients with a negative TGI had early response suggesting increased tumor sensitivity(p = 0.0186). On the other hand, patients with a positive TGI were more resistant to treatment. TGI was not related to age, clinical stage or tumor size. In conclusion, the results of this study show that the determination of the TGI, but no cell proliferation or apoptosis, as separate events, is able to predict an early treatment response to either radiation or chemotherapy in cervical carcinoma.
