Abstract
We observed the influence of slide images of conspecifics on fear reactions of 12 Romanov and 12 Ile-de-France ewes. Each ewe was individually tested twice in isolation: once in the presence of the projected image of an unfamiliar ewe of its own breed, and once when exposed to an image of a ewe of a different breed. Ewes' responses to a slide of an individual of their own breed differed consistently from their responses to a slide of the other breed (i.e., they displayed lower fear reactions to their own breed). There was also a significant main effect for breed of subject, which reflects breed differences in activity level and/or fearfulness. Differential responses to two-dimensional images of unfamiliar animals of own versus other breed suggest that the ewes recognized the characteristics of their breed. Moreover, the manner in which ewes responded to the slide projections indicates that those images were perceived as social stimuli.

Abstract
Ewes form a selective olfactory memory for their lambs after 2 hr of mother-young interaction following parturition. Mothers will subsequently reject any strange lamb at suckling. The present study investigated whether artificial vaginocervical stimulation (VCS) allows the formation of a selective bond with an unfamiliar lamb and whether it interferes with the maintenance of the bond formed with the familiar lamb. At 2 hr postpartum, mothers were separated from their familiar lamb after having formed a selective bond with it and were given 10 min of mechanical VCS. In the "VCS + lamb" group (n = 24) an unfamiliar lamb was left with the ewe for 2 hr whereas in the "VCS no lamb" group (n = 26) the mother was left alone for the same period of time. Ewes of the "no VCS" group (n = 14) did not receive any VCS. In the majority of animals of the "VCS + lamb" group (23/24) VCS induced a complete acceptance of the unfamiliar lamb without any disruption of the bond previously formed with the familiar lamb. VCS or 2 hr of separation did not disrupt the maintenance of the selective bond initially formed with the familiar lamb since all the ewes of the "VCS no lamb" and "no VCS" groups accepted it at suckling.

Abstract
AbstractIn this work, a procedure to immobilize DNA probes on a microarray patterned on a flexible plastic substrate is developed. The method involves the chemical activation of a thin film surface, the introduction of amine functionality via a silanization step, the coupling of an adequate crosslinker and finally the immobilization of the DNA probe. The response of different thin-film materials and plastic substrates to the immobilization procedure is discussed. The DNA probes immobilized in the patterned pixels were then allowed to hybridize with complementary target DNA labeled with a fluorescent molecule. A prototype array of thin film pixels of SiO2 functionalized by silanization deposited over a polyimide substrate is demonstrated.

Abstract
Aerococcus viridans is a catalase-negative gram-positive bacterium rarely found as human pathogen. Some cases of urinary tract infection (UTI) have been described in immunocompromised adults. In this article we describe a UTI case caused by this agent in a child with severe obstructive uropathy, clinically presented with secondary pseudohypoaldosteronism (SPHA). Although A. viridans is rarely associated with child infection, it can be responsible for life threatening conditions/ situations. To our knowledge, A. viridans UTI has never been reported in pediatric patients.

Abstract
A method was developed to attach 4-amino-2-mercaptopyrimidine (AMP) onto silica gel surface and to determine trace metals. The surface functionalization reaction was performed with a silylant agent, chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (Si-CPTS), and the product, Si-AMP, was characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis to evaluate the surface modification. The functionalized silica was applied in the sorption of Cu(II) ions from an aqueous medium. The series of adsorption isotherms were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation and the maximum number of moles of adsorbed copper was 0.447 mmol g(-1). The modified material was placed in a preconcentration system, where it reached an approximately 20-fold enrichment factor using 5mg of Si-AMP. The proposed method was applied in the preconcentration and determination of Cu(II) in a fresh water sample from the Paraná river and was validated through a comparative analysis of a standard reference material (1643e).

Abstract
Nursing-suckling interactions facilitate olfactory learning in newborns as long as suckling and the olfactory stimulus temporally overlap. We tested the hypothesis that olfactory preferences would develop even with a long delay between odor presentation and nursing. Thyme was presented to 2-day-old rabbit pups by placing an odorized plate 2 cm above their nest box. Duration and time of nursing were controlled and occurred before, during, or after odor presentation. Controls were not nursed. When exposed to the odor for 15 min, control pups preferred thyme to a novel odor in a 2-choice test immediately after exposure but not 3 and 22 h later. When pups were nursed immediately before thyme exposure or during exposure, they preferred the familiar odorant until 22 h later. Identically, when nursing occurred 30 min before odor exposure, a preference for thyme was maintained up to 22 h. This was not observed when nursing occurred 60 min before odor presentation. We concluded that enhancement of olfactory memory occurs in neonates during nursing but also after post-oral stimulation by postprandial internal state.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several case reports in the literature brought to discussion the distinction criteria between fetus in fetu and teratoma. CASE REPORT The authors present a case report of a premature newborn boy, evaluated for a capsulated abdominal mass with prenatal diagnosis pointing to possible malignant lesion. A CT scan showed an expansive, retroperitoneal lesion, from kidneys to pelvis, sacrum and coccyx, with solid, cystic and fatty areas; the fine needle aspiration was inconclusive, and he underwent surgery on day 9 with partial resection of the lesion. A new procedure to complete the excision was performed 8 months later. The histopathologic examination of the two fragments showed mature and organized components of nervous system, respiratory and digestive apparatus (liver and pancreas included), thymus, nervous ganglia, skin and adnexa, musculoskeletal and brown adipose tissues; cartilage and several focus of calcification. These components showed a craniocaudal orientation, but no evidence of organoid formation. DISCUSSION This case presents features of both teratoma and fetus in fetu. The assumption of either one of the diagnosis has prognostic implications, with resulting differences in clinical follow up and expectations about the child's health.

Abstract
Hypothalamic AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) is a key regulator of food intake in mammals. Its role in reproduction at the central level and, more precisely, in gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) release has never been investigated. We showed that each subunit of AMPK is present in immortalised GnRH neurones (GT1-7 cells). Treatment with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-beta-D-ribonucleoside (AICAR) and metformin, two activators of AMPK, increased dose-dependent and time-dependent phosphorylation of AMPKalpha atThr172 in GT1-7 cells. Phosphorylation of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase at ser79 also increased. Treatment with AICAR (5 mM) or metformin (5 mM) for 4 h inhibited GnRH release in the presence or absence of GnRH (10(-8) M). Specific AMPK inhibitor compound C completely eliminated the effects of AICAR or metformin on GnRH release. Finally, we determined the central effects of AICAR in vivo on food intake and oestrous cyclicity. Ten-week-old female rats received a 50 microg AICAR or a saline i.c.v. injection. We detected increased AMPK and acetyl-CoA carboxylase phosphorylation, specifically in the hypothalamus, 30 min after AICAR injection. Food intake was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in animals treated with AICAR than in animals injected with saline, 24 h after injection. This effect was abolished after 1 week. Moreover, during the 4 weeks following injection, the interval between two oestrous stages was significantly lower in the AICAR group than in the saline group. Our findings suggest that AMPK activation may act directly at the hypothalamic level to affect fertility by modulating GnRH release and oestrous cyclicity.

Abstract
Biotin is a cofactor of the gluconeogenic enzymes pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and propionyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (PCC). We hypothesized that biotin supplementation increases the activity and gene expression of PC and PCC and the gene expression of phosphoenol-pyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) in the liver of lactating dairy cows. Eight multiparous Holstein cows (40 +/- 2 kg/d of milk yield and 162 +/- 35 d in milk) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 diet sequences in a crossover design with two 22-d periods. Treatments consisted of a basal diet (60% concentrate) containing 0 or 0.96 mg/kg of supplemental biotin. On d 21 of each period, liver tissue was collected by percutaneous liver biopsy. Activities of PC and PCC were determined by measuring the fixation of [14C]O2 in liver homogenates. Abundance of mRNA for PCC, PC, and PEPCK was determined by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. Biotin supplementation did not affect milk production or composition. Biotin supplementation increased the activity of PC but had no effect on PCC activity. Biotin supplementation did not affect the gene expression of PC, PCC, and PEPCK. The increased activity of PC without changes in mRNA abundance may have been caused by increased activation of the apoenzymes by holocarboxylase synthetase. In conclusion, biotin supplementation affected the activity of PC in the liver of lactating dairy cows, but whether biotin supplementation increases glucose production in the liver remains to be determined.

Abstract
A sensitive indicator of biotin status for lactating dairy cows is necessary to understand factors that affect milk yield responses to biotin supplementation. 3-Hydroxyisovaleric acid (3HIA) is an alternative metabolite in the pathway of Leu catabolism when the biotin-dependent enzyme methylcrotonyl-coenzyme A carboxylase is limiting. We evaluated urinary excretion of 3HIA as a determinant of biotin status in lactating dairy cows. We hypothesized that high-producing cows would have a greater biotin requirement and excrete more 3HIA than low-producing cows and that biotin supplementation would decrease 3HIA excretion. Twenty high-producing and 20 low-producing Holstein cows (43 +/- 5 and 23 +/- 4 kg/d of milk, respectively) were fed diets that contained either 0 or 0.96 mg/kg of supplemental biotin. On d 16 cows were given an intraruminal infusion of 1.4 mol of isovaleric acid and urine was sampled. Biotin supplementation did not affect basal urinary excretion of 3HIA. The infusion of isovaleric acid increased urinary excretion of 3HIA (maximum at 8 h after infusion), but biotin supplementation did not attenuate this increase. The increase in urinary 3HIA excretion was less for low-producing cows than for high-producing cows. Biotin increased yields of milk and milk components in high-producing cows but had no effect in low-producing cows. However, potential measures of biotin status (concentrations of avidin-binding substances in the plasma, milk, and urine, and urinary 3HIA excretion) responded similarly to biotin supplementation for both high- and low-producing cows. A sensitive indicator of biotin status for lactating dairy cows is still needed.

Abstract
This study investigates which forebrain structures show Fos protein expression during conditioned taste aversion (CTA) acquisition and whether Fos expression depends on the aversion strength. A novel taste paired with an intraperitoneal injection of a low dose of the malaise-inducing agent lithium chloride (LiCl) induced a weak CTA, whereas associating this novel taste with a high dose of LiCl induced a strong CTA. Increasing the strength of the gastric malaise alone enhanced Fos expression in central, basal, and lateral amygdala nuclei and decreased Fos expression in the nucleus accumbens core. Taste-malaise association induced specific Fos activation in the insular cortex (with both the low and the high doses of LiCl) and the nucleus accumbens shell (with the high LiCl dose only). No significant variation of Fos expression was measured in the perirhinal cortex. Several forebrain areas may be sites of taste-malaise convergence during CTA acquisition depending on the strength of the aversion.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the mother in the development of flavored-food preference in lambs. First, we demonstrated that lambs that ate flavored food in the presence of their mothers before weaning ate more of this food 1 month after weaning than lambs that ate flavored food with other ewes or lambs exposed to nonflavored food with their mothers. Second, lambs that could only see their mothers eating the flavored food and had access to the food's olfactory cues before weaning, showed similar preference for flavored food 1 month after weaning to lambs that ate the flavored food with their mothers. However, lambs that were separated from their mothers while their mothers consumed flavored food did not reveal a preference for it. Overall these results suggest that development of food preference in lambs depends mainly on observation of the mother, provided there is also access to olfactory cues characterizing the food.

Abstract
Ion channels are the "transistors" (electronic switches) of the brain that generate and propagate electrical signals in the aqueous environment of the brain and nervous system. Potassium channels are particularly important because, not only do they shape dynamic electrical signaling, they also set the resting potentials of almost all animal cells. Without them, animal life as we know it would not exist, much less higher brain function. Until the completion of the C. elegans genome sequencing project the size and diversity of the potassium channel extended gene family was not fully appreciated. Sequence data eventually revealed a total of approximately 70 genes encoding potassium channels out of the more than 19,000 genes in the genome. This seemed to be an unexpectedly high number of genes encoding potassium channels for an animal with a small nervous system of only 302 neurons. However, it became clear that potassium channels are expressed in all cell types, not only neurons, and that many cells express a complex palette of multiple potassium channels. All types of potassium channels found in C. elegans are conserved in mammals. Clearly, C. elegans is "simple" only in having a limited number of cells dedicated to each organ system; it is certainly not simple with respect to its biochemistry and cell physiology.
