Abstract
OBJECTIVE The soluble form of major histocompatibility complex class I-related chain A (MICA) is released from the surface of tumor cells of epithelial origin. Serum levels of soluble MHC class I-related chain A (sMICA) is related with the prognosis of various types of cancer. However, there are studies on the prognostic value of sMICA in non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC). In this study, we retrospectively investigated the relationship between sMICA levels and clinical features of NSCLC, and we assessed the prognostic value of sMICA in NSCLC. PATIENTS AND METHODS sMICA levels were detected in 207 NSCLC patients and 207 normal control individuals with using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and its associations with clinicopathological parameters were evaluated. Survival curves were compared using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank tests. Univariate Cox regression was used on each clinical covariate to examine its influence on patient survival. Multivariate models were based on step-wise addition. RESULTS Serum sMICA levels were significantly higher in NSCLC patients than in healthy controls (mean ± SD [pg/ml], 143.52 ± 27.6 vs. 32.4 ± 7.53 p < 0.01) and were significantly correlated with TNM stage, poorer differentiation, lymph node metastases and distant metastases. Survival analysis showed that a low sMICA level had longer survival time than those with high serum sMICA. Multivariate analyses indicated that high sMICA proved to be an independent predictor of survival time. CONCLUSIONS Serum sMICA level in NSCLC patients is associated with metastasis. It is an indicator of a poorer survival probability. Serum sMICA levels may be an independent prognostic factor for NSCLC.

Abstract
Personalized cancer therapy requires characterization of the current status of an individual's cancer, necessitating invasive tumor tissue biopsies at diagnosis, during treatment and at progression. Serial acquisition of solid tumor biopsies during treatment to characterize mutations related to acquired resistance may not be medically feasible. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in plasma offers a possible noninvasive "real time" tool for tumor characterization, providing accessible genetic biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and response to therapy.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Essential oils have been found to exert antibacterial, antifungal, spasmolytic, and antiplasmodial activity and therapeutic effect in cancer treatment. In this study, the antibacterial activities of four main essential oils' components (thymol (Thy), eugenol (Eug), berberine (Ber), and cinnamaldehyde (Cin)) were evaluated against two food-borne pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium, either alone or in combination with streptomycin. Checkerboard assay demonstrated that Thy and Cin elicited a synergistic effect with streptomycin against L. monocytogenes, while a synergy existed between Cin or Eug and streptomycin against Salm. Typhimurium. Further experiments showed that this synergy was sufficient to eradicate biofilms formed by these two bacteria. Thus, our data highlighted that the combinations of specific components from essential oils and streptomycin were useful for the treatment of food-borne pathogens, which might help prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance through improving antibiotic effectiveness. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study has shown the synergistic effect of four components of essential oil (thymol, eugenol, berberine and cinnamaldehyde) combined with streptomycin on planktonic and biofilm-associated food-borne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium. These findings indicate that combination of specific components of essential oils with streptomycin may provide alternative methods to overcome the problem of food-borne bacteria both in suspension and in biofilm.

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to detect an 18-bp deletion mutation in the bovine adenosine monophosphate deaminase 1 (AMPD1) gene and analyze its effect on growth traits in 2 Chinese cattle breeds using DNA sequencing and agarose electrophoresis. The five 19-bp polymerase chain reaction products of the AMPD1 gene exhibited 3 genotypes and 2 alleles: WW: homozygote genotype (wild-type); DD: homozygote genotype (mutant-type); WD: heterozygote genotype. Frequencies of the W allele varied from 66.15-70.35%. The associations between the 18-bp deletion mutation in the AMPD1 gene with production traits in 226 Jia-Xian red cattle was analyzed. The animals with genotype WW showed significantly higher heart girth and body weight than those with genotypes WD and DD at 24 months (P < 0.01). Our results indicate that the deletion mutation in the AMPD1 gene is associated with production traits, and may be used for marker-assisted selection in beef cattle breeding programs.

Abstract
Background: AAK, a key mitotic regulator, is frequently amplified/overexpressed across a spectrum of tumors, including BrC. AAK overexpression is associated with poor prognosis. MLN8237 is an oral selective AAK inhibitor under evaluation in pts with advanced cancer as a single agent and in combination therapy. A phase 1/2 study (NCT01045421) evaluated MLN8237 in pts with different solid tumors; phase 2 data for the Brc cohort are presented.
Methods: Females aged ≥18 y with relapsed/refractory BrC including HR+, HER2+ and triple-negative histological subtype, ECOG PS 0–1, measurable disease by RECIST v1.1 and ≤4 prior cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens (not including adjuvant, neo-adjuvant; no limitation on prior hormonal or HER2 targeted, immunological or biological agents) were enrolled. Symptomatic brain metastases were excluded (treated stable metastasis allowed). A Simon's optimal 2-stage design was used; 20 pts were initially enrolled, expansion proceeded if ≥2 objective responses were observed in these response-evaluable pts. Pts received MLN8237 50 mg BID for 7 days in 21-day cycles. Primary objective: overall response rate (ORR). Secondary objectives: safety, duration of response (DOR) and progression-free survival (PFS). An exploratory study was performed to assess clinical responses in relation to candidate biomarker dysregulation (mutation, amplification, and deletion) in banked tumor specimens.
Results: As of April, 2013, 53 pts were enrolled: median age was 60 y (range 33–81), median of 4 cycles (range 1–21). 49 pts (92%) were response-evaluable (HR+, n = 26; HER2+, n = 9; triple negative, n = 14). 33% of pts received treatment for ≥6 months (HR+, n = 11 [69%]; HER2+, n = 3 [19%]; triple negative, n = 2 [12%]). ORR (all pts) was 18% and median PFS was 5.42 months. Efficacy data per subgroup are shown in the table. All 53 pts were included in the safety population; drug-related adverse events (AEs) were reported in 51 pts (96%), most frequent were neutropenia (55%), alopecia (49%) and diarrhea (45%). 38 pts (72%) had grade ≥3 drug-related AEs, including neutropenia (49%), leukopenia (21%) and febrile neutropenia (4%). G-CSF use was 32%. 2 pts (4%) discontinued due to AEs (sepsis [grade 4], n = 1; neutropenia [grade 3], n = 1); no on-study deaths were reported. Treatment is ongoing in 3 HR+ pts. Whole-exome sequencing of selected tumor samples was completed. Correlative analysis is ongoing to identify potential genetic markers/mutated pathways associated with clinical response. Preliminary results will be presented.
Conclusions: MLN8237 appears to have a generally manageable toxicity profile and shows signs of single agent antitumor activity in pts with heavily pretreated (different molecular subgroups) of relapsed/refractory BrC supporting further evaluation of MLN8237 in this tumor type in different combination strategies.

Abstract
We present a new multifocal multiphoton microscope that employs a programmable spatial light modulator to generate dynamic multifocus arrays which can be rapidly scanned by changing the incident angle of the laser beam using a pair of galvo scanners. Using this microscope, we can rapidly select the number and the spatial density of focal points in a multifocus array, as well as the locations and shapes of arrays according to the features of the areas of interest in the field of view without any change to the hardware.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between recurrent major depression (MD) in women and suicidality is complex. We investigated the extent to which patients who suffered with various forms of suicidal symptomatology can be distinguished from those subjects without such symptoms. METHOD We examined the clinical features of the worst episode in 1970 Han Chinese women with recurrent DSM-IV MD between the ages of 30 and 60 years from across China. Student's t tests, and logistic and multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the association between suicidality and other clinical features of MD. RESULTS Suicidal symptomatology is significantly associated with a more severe form of MD, as indexed by both the number of episodes and number of MD symptoms. Patients reporting suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts experienced a significantly greater number of stressful life events. The depressive symptom most strongly associated with lifetime suicide attempt was feelings of worthlessness (odds ratio 4.25, 95% confidence interval 2.9-6.3). Excessive guilt, diminished concentration and impaired decision-making were also significantly associated with a suicide attempt. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the existing literature on risk factors for suicidal symptomatology in depressed women. Identifying specific depressive symptoms and co-morbid psychiatric disorders may help improve the clinical assessment of suicide risk in depressed patients. These findings could be helpful in identifying those who need more intense treatment strategies in order to prevent suicide.

Abstract
Traditional strengthening ways, such as strain, precipitation, and solid-solution, come into effect by pinning the motion of dislocation. Here, through first-principles calculations we report on an extra-electron induced covalent strengthening mechanism, which alters chemical bonding upon the introduction of extra-valence electrons in the matrix of parent materials. It is responsible for the brittle and high-strength properties of Al(12)W-type compounds featured by the typical fivefold icosahedral cages, which are common for quasicrystals and bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). In combination with this mechanism, we generalize ductile-to-brittle criterion in a universal hyperbolic form by integrating the classical Pettifor's Cauchy pressure with Pugh's modulus ratio for a wide variety of materials with cubic lattices. This study provides compelling evidence to correlate Pugh's modulus ratio with hardness of materials and may have implication for understanding the intrinsic brittleness of quasicrystals and BMGs.

Abstract
We report a general scheme to systematically construct two classes of structural families of superhard sp(3) carbon allotropes of cold-compressed graphite through the topological analysis of odd 5+7 or even 4+8 membered carbon rings stemmed from the stacking of zigzag and armchair chains. Our results show that the previously proposed M, bct-C(4), W and Z allotropes belong to our currently proposed families and that depending on the topological arrangement of the native carbon rings numerous other members are found that can help us understand the structural phase transformation of cold-compressed graphite and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In particular, we predict the existence of two simple allotropes, R and P carbon, which match well the experimental x-ray diffraction patterns of cold-compressed graphite and CNTs, respectively, display a transparent wide-gap insulator ground state and possess a large Vickers hardness comparable to diamond.

Abstract
AbstractDomain structure and growth mechanism of PbTiO3 thin films were investigated using a transmission electron microscopy(TEM) from the viewpoint of size effects. At initial growth stage of (111)-oriented PbTiO3 films prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD), triangle-shaped islands were grown on Pt(111)/SiO2/Si before becoming a continuous film. Triangular islands grew gradually in a lateral dimension. This means that PbTiO3 films grew two-dimensionally at initial growth stage. In cross-sectional TEM photomicrographs, (101)-twin boundaries (90° domain walls) and inclination of {110} or {101}-plane were observed in PbTiO3 islands. This result indicates that such small PbTiO3 islands have a tetragonal structure and could have spontaneous polarization. The minimum island which had 90° domain walls was 10nm high and 18nm wide.

Abstract
Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) is an important tool in assisting Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). EEM in the offshore petroleum industry has been conducted worldwide, but traditional approaches have struggled to keep apace as exploration and production activities move to frontier regions, such as increasingly deeper waters and Arctic regions. This paper proposes the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for environmental monitoring of offshore facilities as a means of improving and expanding the overall monitoring program. The paper provides a review of technical and procedural issues involved in this application of AUV technology, including the current status of offshore oil and gas EEM, a review of available AUVs and a survey of developments in in situ sensors.
Introduction
Offshore petroleum industry operations affect the marine environment in a variety of ways: high sound levels from seismic surveys that affect marine animals; exposure of marine organisms to drilling mud, produced water discharges and accidentally spilled oils; and the physical alteration of habitat due to the construction of submarine structures. The potential risks to the environment posed by offshore oil and gas operations support the need for effective Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) around the project development areas.
EEM is a central component of environmental protection and management strategies designed to minimize the consequences of anthropogenic activities(1). It is a very important tool in assisting Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) which is seen from many studies that link EEM and ERA together(2, 3). EEM is required by regulations governing industry activities offshore, and by government agencies in relation to cumulative impact assessment studies(4).
The United States started the use of environmental monitoring programs in 1973. The Mineral Management Services (MMS) is currently responsible for managing oil and gas activities on the outer continental shelf (OCS). In the early stages of EEM programs, MMS monitored the effects of petroleum exploration activities on the George's Bank, Middle Atlantic OCS and the Gulf of Mexico. Early monitoring programs mainly focused on the effects of drilling wastes on benthic communities through a variety of sampling methods, such as camera transects, crab traps, bottom trawls and box corers. The MMS has also monitored the effects of petroleum development and production activities in the Gulf of Mexico, Santa Maria and Western Santa Barbara Channels off California, and in the Alaska Beaufort Sea. Trace metals and hydrocarbons in the water column, sediments, pore waters and biological tissues are collected and analyzed.
In Canada, both government agencies and operators have carried out EEM. For example, Petro-Canada collected sediment samples from 49 stations and water samples from 24 stations in an area located in the vicinity of the Terra Nova Oil Field during 2000 to 2001. Analyses of samples included hydrocarbon concentration, metal concentration, particle size and the presence of sulphur, sulphide and ammonia(5). Fisheries and Oceans Canada also conducts annual EEM missions at the Hibernia, Terra Nova and The baud fields off the east coast of Canada. Both sediment and water samples are collected and the biodiversity of benthic organisms are studied using underwater photography.

Abstract
The inhibitory receptor FcgammaRIIb regulates B-cell functions. Genetic studies have associated Fcgr2b polymorphisms and lupus susceptibility in both humans and murine models, in which B cells express reduced FcgammaRIIb levels. Furthermore, FcgammaRIIb absence results in lupus on the appropriate genetic background, and lentiviral-mediated FcgammaRIIb overexpression prevents disease in the NZM2410 lupus mouse. The NZM2410/NZW allele Fcgr2b is, however, located in-between Sle1a and Sle1b, two potent susceptibility loci, making it difficult to evaluate Fcr2b(NZW) independent contribution. By using two congenic strains that each carries only Sle1a (B6.Sle1a(15-353)), or Fcr2b(NZW) in the absence of Sle1a or Sle1b (B6.Sle1(111-148)), we show that the Fcr2b(NZW) allele does not upregulate its expression on germinal center B cells and plasma cells, as does the C57BL/6 allele on B6.Sle1a(15-353) B cells. Furthermore, in the absence of the flanking Sle1a and Sle1b, Fcr2b(NZW) does not produce an autoimmune phenotype, but is associated with an increased number of class-switched plasma cells. These results show that while a lower level of FcgammaRIIb does not by itself induce the development of autoreactive B cells, it has the potential to amplify the contribution of autoreactive B cells induced by other lupus-susceptibility loci by enhancing the production of class-switched plasma cells.

Abstract
We propose a radiometric method based on measurement of the radioactivity of the naturally occurring radionuclides (228)Ra and 228)Th and the derived (228)Th/(228)Ra ratios in plant samples to estimate plant age and the corresponding nutritional conditions in a field-growing fern, Dicranopteris linearis. Plant age (tissue age) was associated with the (228)Th/(228)Ra ratio in fronds, which implies the accumulation time of immobile elements in the plant tissue or the life span of the fronds. Results indicated that the accumulation of alkaline earth elements in D. linearis is relatively constant with increased age, while the K concentration is reversed with age because of translocation among plant tissues. Estimation of dating uncertainty based on measurement conditions revealed that the radiometric technique can be applied to trace chronosequential changes of elemental concentrations and environmental pollutants in plants with ages of less than 10-15 years.

Abstract
The individual and interactive effects of physicochemical parameters on ellagitannin acyl hydrolase activity and ellagic acid production by Aspergillus oryzae using ellagitannins from acorn fringe of oak as substrate were studied. Ellagitannins concentration, incubation time were identified as important physicochemical parameters influencing the enzyme synthesis and the production accumulation, and the substrate concentration with initial pH was determined to has an interactive effect on the enzyme synthesis, while ellagitannins concentration and initial pH with incubation time were found to have interactions on the production accumulation. Furthermore, the parameters were optimized by quadratic programming. Under optimum condition, the fermentation run lasted 84 h with 4 g L(-1) ellagitannins concentration, yielding 17.7% ellagic acid. However, the maximum enzyme activity was obtained in 96 h with 5 g L(-1) substrate concentration. The research demonstrated a possible way to develop an efficient approach for recovery of higher added-value product (ellagic acid) from forestry byproduct (acorn fringe of oak).

Abstract
Nanofluidic channel arrays, which have a width of about 40 nm, depth of 60 nm and length of 50 mum, were created using a focused-ion-beam milling instrument on a silicon nitride film swiftly and exactly, as is necessary. Stained -DNA molecules were put inside these sub-100 nm conduits by capillary force and they were stretched and transferred along these conduits, which were dealt with activating reagent Brij aqueous solution in advance. The movements of DNA molecules in these channels were discussed. These nano-structure channels may be useful in the study and analysis of the statics as well as the dynamics of single biomolecules.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate optical rotation and manipulation of microscopic particles by use of optical vortex beams with fractional topological charges, namely fractional optical vortex beams, which are coupled in an optical tweezers system. Like the vortex beams with integer topological charges, the fractional optical vortex beams are also capable of rotating particles induced by the transfer of orbital angular momentum. However, the unique radial opening (low-intensity gap) in the intensity ring encompassing the dark core, due to the fractional nature of the beam, hinders the rotation significantly. The fractional vortex beam's orbital angular momentum and radial opening are exploited to guide and transport microscopic particles.
