Abstract
We report a 47-year-old man who presented with partial seizures complicating focal cerebral vasculitis of the right temporal lobe. Excisional biopsy of the mass lesion revealed fibrinoid necrosis of small vessels. These vessels were infiltrated by neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. Despite extensive evaluation, no etiology was apparent for the vasculitis. No immunosuppressive agents were administered, and 4 1/2 years after the diagnosis, he remains healthy except for an incongruous left homonymous hemianopia. Follow-up cranial magnetic resonance images revealed only postoperative changes. This case demonstrates that focal lesions and a benign course may represent one end of the spectrum of primary angiitis of the central nervous system.

Abstract
We have described a virus termed CP-MAC, derived from the BK28 molecular clone of simian immunodeficiency virus, that was remarkable for its ability to infect Sup-T1 cells with rapid kinetics, cell fusion, and CD4 down-modulation (C. C. LaBranche, M. M. Sauter, B. S. Haggarty, P. J. Vance, J. Romano, T. K. Hart, P. J. Bugelski, and J. A. Hoxie, J. Virol. 68:5509-5522, 1994 [Erratum 68:7665-7667]). Compared with BK28, CP-MAC exhibited a number of changes in its envelope glycoproteins, including a highly stable association between the external (SU) and transmembrane (TM) molecules, a more rapid electrophoretic mobility of TM, and, of particular interest, a marked increase in the level of envelope protein expression on the surface of infected cells. These changes were shown to be associated with 11 coding mutations in the env gene (5 in SU and 6 in TM). In this report, we demonstrate that a single amino acid mutation of a Tyr to a Cys at position 723 (Y723C) in the TM cytoplasmic domain of CP-MAC is the principal determinant for the increased expression of envelope glycoproteins on the cell surface. When introduced into the env gene of BK28, the Y723C mutation produced up to a 25-fold increase in the levels of SU and TM on chronically infected cells, as determined by fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. A similar effect was observed when a Tyr-to-Cys change was introduced at the analogous position (amino acid 721) in the SIVmac239 molecular clone, which, unlike BK28 does not contain a premature stop codon in its TM cytoplasmic tail. Substituting other amino acids, including Ala, Ile, and Ser, at this position produced increases in surface envelope glycoproteins that were similar to that observed for the Cys substitution, while a Tyr-to-Phe mutation produced a smaller increase. These results could not be accounted for by differences in the kinetics or efficiency of envelope glycoprotein processing or by shedding of SU from infected cells. However, immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated that the Y723C mutation in BK28 produced a striking redistribution of cell surface envelope molecules from localized patches to a diffuse pattern that covered the entire plasma membrane. This finding suggests that mutation of a Tyr residue in the simian immunodeficiency virus TM cytoplasmic domain may disrupt a structural element that can modulate envelope glycoprotein expression on the surface of infected cells.

Abstract
The localization of neurons innervating the carotid sinus of the dog was studied by horseradish peroxidase histochemistry following microinjection of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) under the adventitia of the carotid sinus. Labeled cell bodies were found in the petrosal (198 +/- 108; mean +/- S.D.) and superior cervical ganglia (SCG) (890 +/- 354 mean +/- S.D.) supporting the existence of both a sensory afferent and a sympathetic efferent innervation of the carotid sinus. Labeled neurons in the petrosal ganglion were round pseudounipolar neurons of variable size. Labeled neurons in the SCG were multipolar and appeared distributed over the whole ganglion, but with a higher density toward its caudal half. No labeled perikarya appeared either in the brainstem or in the nodose or jugular ganglia, suggesting that in the dog a vagal pathway for carotid sinus baroreceptor afferents does not exist.

Abstract
The localization and brain stem projections of neurons innervating the carotid sinus of the dog were studied by horseradish peroxidase histochemistry following microinjection of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) under the adventitia of the carotid sinus. Within the brain stem, labeled afferent fibers and presumptive terminals were found bilaterally in the caudal nucleus tractus solitarius (nTS), the area postrema (AP), and the lateral tegmental field (LTF), reaching the area of the nucleus ambiguus (nA). Sparse labeling was also seen in the ipsilateral spinal trigeminal nucleus (SpV) and lateral cuneatus nucleus (LCn). These findings suggest the existence of multiple pathways by which peripheral baroreceptor inputs may influence central cardiovascular-related neurons. In addition to classically defined relay in the nTS, carotid sinus afferents may also interact more directly with these neurons in other brain stem regions.

Abstract
This report describes the incidental finding of an acidophilic adenoma of the pituitary gland in an adult ewe with clinical signs of a nervous disorder. Immunohistochemical examination demonstrated prolactin in the tumour cells, justifying the use of the term "prolactinoma" for the first time in veterinary medicine. This tumour should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nervous diseases of sheep.

Abstract
A canine phaeochromocytoma was diagnosed by (1) argyrophil methods, (2) immunoreactivity to chromogranin and to vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and (3) the demonstration of typical electron-dense granules by transmission electron microscopy. This is the first report of immunoreactivity to general neuroendocrine markers such as chromogranin, and to VIP, in a phaeochromocytoma in domestic animals. The use of these markers for the differential diagnosis of phaeochromocytoma, and the role of VIP in the severe chronic diarrhoea shown by the dog in this study are discussed.

Abstract
Some isolates of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) have been shown to infect Sup-T1 cells with slow kinetics and in the absence of cytopathic effects, including cell fusion or CD4 down-modulation (J. A. Hoxie, B. S. Haggarty, S. Bonser, J. Rackowski, H. Shan, and P. Kanki, J. Virol. 62:2557-2568, 1988). In the present study, we describe the isolation and characterization of a SIVmac variant, derived from the BK28 infectious molecular clone, that became highly cytopathic for Sup-T1 cells. This variant, termed CP-MAC, exhibited a number of differences from BK28, including (i) an altered tropism which largely restricted its host range to Sup-T1 cells, (ii) the ability to induce cell fusion and CD4 down-modulation, and (iii) a highly stable interaction of its external (SU) and transmembrane (TM) envelope glycoproteins. In addition, a marked increase in the level of surface envelope glycoproteins was observed both on CP-MAC-infected cells and on virions. The CP-MAC env gene was PCR amplified from infected cells, and sequence analysis identified five amino acid changes in SU and six in TM compared with BK28. The introduction of these changes into BK28 was shown to fully reconstitute the biological and morphological properties of CP-MAC. The limited number of mutations in CP-MAC should enable the molecular determinants to be more precisely defined and help to identify the underlying mechanisms responsible for the striking biological and structural alterations exhibited by this virus.

The author cites significant changes in the conduct of the psychiatric profession between the fourth and ninth decades of this century. Determinants of the changes included the impact of World War II, the National Mental Health Act of 1946, the evolution of multiple modes of psychotherapy, the move from a system of involuntary incarceration and treatment in public institutions to a voluntaristic and pluralistic system, the provision of public and private insurance support for office, outpatient, and inpatient psychiatric care, the resurgence of psychopharmacology, and the pursuit of research in biological and psychosocial fields. The social goals of the profession are also discussed.

Abstract
The coexistence of serotonin and cholecystokinin was studied in foetal sheep lungs at pseudoglandular stage of development by light microscopic immunohistochemistry. The coexistence was examined by staining consecutive sections with the different antibodies. Serotonin and cholecystokinin immunoreactivity was found within consecutive sections of most bronchopulmonary neuroepithelial bodies and in consecutive sections of the same intrapulmonary autonomic ganglia.

Abstract
Researchers have observed that Expressed Emotion (i.e., criticism; EE) in caregivers is predictive of poorer functioning in psychiatric care recipients over time. Few studies have examined, however, whether EE has predictive validity for the decline of care recipients with a clearly defined organic illness such as Alzheimer's disease. This study evaluated whether Alzheimer's disease care recipient problems [in cognition, activities of daily living (ADLs), and negative behaviors] were predicted longitudinally by caregiver EE. As hypothesized, caregiver EE was not predictive of care recipient cognitive or ADL decline; however, data suggested that EE was predictive of increased negative behaviors over time. The specific predictions of negative care recipient behaviors, and not care recipient cognitive/ADL decline, suggest that the former outcomes may be determined by environmental factors as well as the organicity of the disease. These data may be important because researchers have reported that caregivers are more distressed by negative care recipient behaviors than by care recipient cognitive/ADL decline.

Abstract
Several articles have been published that bring attention to the destructive potential of tire explosions. Although the severity of tire explosion injuries to the head and neck region is well established, only one previous article has reported injuries to the upper extremity. Fourteen patients with upper extremity tire explosion injuries have been treated by us from 1980 to 1988. Each injury was caused by single-piece wheel assemblies, as opposed to multipiece wheel assemblies, which have traditionally been associated with the injury. Three representative patient reports are discussed. Prevention of this injury can be achieved by increased public awareness, formal industrial safety training, tire servicing with dedicated equipment including restraining devices or barriers, complete evaluation of wheel/tire serviceability before tire mounting, separation of servicing of single and multipiece wheels, and complete tire deflation before servicing.

Abstract
The nuclear phosphoprotein p53 is an important regulator of cell proliferation in normal cells. Interestingly, the gene encoding p53 has usually undergone mutations in a wide range of tumor types. Recent studies of the p53 gene in Burkitt's lymphomas have demonstrated that mutations are extremely common, and in fact it is rare that both alleles of the p53 gene in these tumors are not inactivated by mutation or deletion. We present here genetic data regarding the status of the p53 gene in the Burkitt lymphoma cell line, Raji. As is typical for this type of tumor, both alleles have undergone point mutations. Further, statistical analysis of available data from a large number of Burkitt's lymphomas indicates an apparent tumor-specific distribution of p53 mutations. The possibility that specific mutations of the p53 gene may be important for different tumor types is discussed.

Abstract
The lower respiratory tract of the sheep was studied by light-microscopical immunocytochemistry for serotonin, cholecystokinin, somatostatin, bombesin and calcitonin during different periods of lung development; embryonic, foetal and postnatal. At embryonic period only intraepithelial serotonin-containing cells as solitary neuroendocrine cells (NEC) and neuroepithelial bodies (NEB) were found. At foetal stages, immunoreactive cells to serotonin, cholecystokinin and somatostatin were observed in airway epithelium, as solitary NEC and NEBs, and in autonomic intrapulmonary ganglia as single or clusters of small intensely-fluorescent (SIF) cells. In postnatal sheep, serotonin- and cholecystokinin-containing cells were found within airway mucosa as solitary NECs and NEBs. No immunoreactive cells were observed with antiserum to bombesin and calcitonin. Quantitative studies showed that serotonin was the predominant substance, and that solitary neuroendocrine cells were more numerous in distal conducting airways and at foetal stages.

Abstract
Immunization of mice and rats with purified external glycoprotein gp120 from two divergent human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) isolates resulted in the development of seven hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies able to recognize regions of gp120 which are common among divergent strains of HIV-1. These monoclonal antibodies cross-reacted with env glycoproteins from one African (Rutz), one Haitian (RF), and three North American viral isolates, namely IIIB, MN, and 451 by either immunoblot or radioimmunoprecipitation assays. All recognized denatured gp120 in immunoblots with the exception of one which required a conformationally intact glycoprotein for reactivity. The gp120 epitopes identified by these antibodies were mapped by screening of an env gene library in the lambda gt11 expression system. Three out of four epitopes were found to reside in the amino-terminal half of gp120 (Cys9 to Cys35, Thr44 to Glu72 and Val108 to Met130), the other was located in the middle region (Thr221 to Ser255). By virtue of their extent of cross-reactivity these reagents might provide a unique resource for the detection of new viral isolates related to HIV-1.

Abstract
To assess the distribution pattern of Langerhans cells (LC) in normal porcine skin, epidermal sheets from six anatomical sites from three age-matched groups of male and female pigs were stained for ATPase activity. This histoenzymological technique is considered specific for Langerhans cells in normal epidermis. No statistically significant differences were observed between mean Langerhans cell density per mm2 of epidermis from male and female pigs, nor between different anatomical sites in the same age group. Statistically significant differences (P less than 0.0005) were observed when comparing group A one- to two-week-old piglets (463 to 518 LC mm-2) with group B six month olds (641 to 804 LC mm-2) and group C two years and over sows (741 to 830 LC mm-2). Morphological variations in the skin of young piglets, much thinner and with rudimentary or no epidermal rete pegs, could account for this significant variation.

Abstract
Transient activation of the interleukin-2 (IL-2) gene after antigen recognition by T lymphocytes is crucial for subsequent T cell proliferation and differentiation. Several IL-2 gene regulatory elements and binding factors necessary for activation of the IL-2 gene have been defined. However, little is known about negative regulation of IL-2 expression, which is likely to be important in the rapid shut-off of IL-2 transcription. A nucleotide sequence element (NRE-A) that negatively regulates IL-2 expression has been identified within the IL-2 gene. T cell nuclear extracts contained an NRE-A binding activity. A complementary DNA was isolated that encodes a zinc finger-containing protein that suppressed IL-2 gene expression. The observation of negative regulation of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene enhancer by an element similar to NRE-A suggests that related proteins may regulate multiple immune response genes.

Using light microscopic immunohistochemistry, serotonin immunoreactivity was found in paraganglionic cells within pulmonary autonomic ganglia of fetal sheep at pseudoglandular and canalicular stages of lung development. Serotonin immunoreactive cells appeared individually or in clusters, and were occasionally seen around or in close contact with blood vessels.

Abstract
Langerhans cells of the epidermis of 6-month-old white crossbred farm pigs were identified by electron microscopy. Ultrastructurally they were similar to those described in other mammals. They were present in basal and suprabasal layers and were characterised by a lobulated nucleus and an electrolucent cytoplasm with occasional dendritic processes, and the absence of tonofilaments and specialised unions with surrounding keratinocytes. They were specifically identified by the presence of characteristic rod or racquet-shaped intracytoplasmic granules. Intraepidermal clear cells without specific granules were present, although no melanocytes were observed. This is the first report of the presence of Birbeck granules in porcine Langerhans cells.

Abstract
The sheep pulmonary intraepithelial APUD system was studied by histochemical, immunocytochemical, and electron microscopy techniques during different periods of lung development: embryonic, fetal (pseudoglandular, canalicular, and alveolar), and postnatal. The cells of the ovine pulmonary intraepithelial APUD system were found randomly distributed throughout the conducting and respiratory or undifferentiated airways. They appeared as isolated cells (solitary neuroendocrine cells) or in groups (neuroepithelial bodies). These cells were argyrophilic and immunoreactive for neuron-specific enolase but were not argentaffin. Ultrastructurally they were characterized by a basal position in the respiratory epithelium and by the presence of neurosecretory granules (dense-core vesicles) ranging between 65 and 230 nm of diametre. Quantitative studies showed that single neuroendocrine cells were more numerous in distal conducting airways and at fetal stages. The earliest identifiable argyrophilic and NSE-immunoreactive neuroendocrine cells in sheep airways appeared at gestational week 5, close to the term of the embryonic period.

Abstract
A morphological and morphometrical study has been carried out on glomerular lesions in mink with spontaneous Aleutian disease, using the WHO classification for Systemic Lupus Erytematous Nefritis. 154 renal samples from sick animals and 10 samples from uninfected mink were processed by routine histopathological techniques and metacrylate inclusions. The samples were studied quantitatively with an automatic image analyzer. 5 forms of glomerulonephritis (GN) were identified: mesangial glomerulonephritis (n = 13), focal and segmental GN (n = 10), diffuse GN (n = 99), membranous GN (n = 12) and advanced sclerosing GN (n = 10) and were associated with the degree of interstitial plasmocytosis. Glomerule morphometry was shown to be an excellent method for identifying the type of lesion, while it quantified the participation of various glomerular elements in the lesion.

Abstract
Two nuclear techniques, Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis (EDXRF) and Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), were used to analyze aerosol samples collected in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Na, Cl, Mn, V, Al, Sm, Mo, W, La, As, Br, Sb, K, Ba, Se, Th, Cr, Rb, Ca, Fe, Ce, and Sc were determined by INAA, and Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Hg, and Pb were determined by EDXRF. A preliminary identification of the main source of the atmospheric aerosol was performed based on enrichment factor and correlation coefficient calculations.
