Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes is often associated with increased prevalence and severity of periodontal disease. We hypothesized that gingival epithelial cells modify periodontal disease progression and predicted that hyperglycemia would activate an inflammatory response in human gingival epithelial cells (HGECs). MATERIALS AND METHODS We tested our hypothesis in immortalized HGECs (epi 4 cells) isolated from periodontal tissue and transfected with the simian virus 40 T antigen. The epi 4 cells were cultured in high (25 mM, HG) and normal (6 mM, NG) glucose conditions. RESULTS The epi 4 cells showed increased interleukin-8 (IL-8) protein secretion and mRNA expression when cultured in HG, compared with in NG. These effects were not associated with increased cell proliferation and were not observed in a hyperosmolar control group (normal glucose with 19 mM mannitol). Increased IL-8 secretion in HG was inhibited by pretreatment with an antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine, or a protein kinase C inhibitor, Ro31-8220. Hyperglycemia did not affect IL-8 secretion by gingival fibroblasts or periodontal ligament cells. In epi 4 cells, hyperglycemia also induced expression of toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) but not TLR4. CONCLUSION These findings suggest a potential participation of epithelial cells in periodontal disease during diabetes by evoking an excessive host inflammatory response.

Abstract
Purpose: To report an important complication related to carotid stenting. Methods and Results: A 71-year-old man with symptomatic subtotal occlusion of the left internal carotid artery had a 30-mm lesion treated percutaneously with implantation of 2 stents. Although the procedure was completed satisfactorily, left intraventricular hemorrhage occurred 4 hours later, possibly related to hyperperfusion injury. The patient expired 30 days after the stent procedure. Preoperative single-photon emission computed tomography revealed severely reduced vasoreactivity in the affected territory after acetazolamide challenge. Conclusions: The risk of hyperperfusion injury must be considered and minimized in patients with significant restriction of regional vasoreactivity. We recommend that cerebral hemodynamic status be determined prior to carotid stenting.

Abstract
We report our initial experience of carotid and vertebral stenting. Three haemodynamically significant extra-cranial lesions (% diameter stenosis >70) in 3 clinically symptomatic patients were treated by stenting between March 1996 and September 1996. Two lesions of the internal carotid arteries were ostial and in one case a subtotal stenosis and ostial lesion of the vertebral artery were observed. All lesions looked more widely and smoothly dilated by stenting than by ordinary standard balloon angioplasty.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of percutaneous transluminal cerebral balloon angioplasty (PTCBA) of extra- and intra-cranial arteries by investigating procedural outcome. Eighty haemodynamically significant extra- and intra-cranial lesions (% diameter stenosis >70) in 74 clinically symptomatic patients were treated by elective and initial PTCBA between March 1991 and February 1996 and followed thereafter. Death, stroke including transient ischemia, surgery, or repeated angioplasty of restenosis or new lesions were regarded as cerebral events after the initial PTCBA. Crescendo ischaemic symptoms disappeared completely after clinically successful dilatation. The clinical success rate was 81% (65/80). Angiographic restenosis rate at 3 months was 22% (14/65). By life-table method, the death/stroke risk was 16% and death/stroke/surgery/repeated PTCBA risk was 49 % at 2 years following PTCBA, respectively. In conclusion, PTCBA successfully, decreased recurrent neurological symptoms and produced a favourable short-term outcome, whereas restenosis limited long-term benefit.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect, safety and short-term outcome of stenting treatment for extra- and intra-cranial atherosclerotic diseases. Forty-one patients underwent stenting treatment using coronary and biliary stents. Eleven patients had tubular or diffuse high-grade stenoses not amenable to standard balloon angioplasty involving intra-cranial arteries, while in thirty, extra-cranial arteries were involved. Stents were successfully implanted in 36 out of 41 lesions (88%) with 2% (1/41) of overall procedural morbidity rate. Procedural and clinical success rate of intra-cranial stent placement was 64% (7/11) and no complications occurred during or after intra-cranial stent placement: the morbidity rate was 0%. Hyperperfusion injury occurred in two patients after successful implantation of stents in subtotal occlusion of the internal carotid artery, and consequently the overall clinical success rate was 80% (33/41). Restenosis occurred in four (12%) out of 33 patients who underwent six month follow-up arteriography. No ischemic attacks or stent-deformation occurred during follow-up after stenting treatment. For lesions not amenable to standard balloon angioplasty, endovascular stent placement seems to be a safe and effective treatment of modality.

Abstract
Background Early bowel obstruction is not a rare complication of gastrectomy, and it may require re-operation in some cases. Case presentation We report the case of a 71-year-old woman who underwent a total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction for a massive gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Postoperatively, she was making good progress and started consuming meals on postoperative day 3. However, on postoperative day 10, she complained of upper abdominal discomfort and nausea. Blood tests showed a mild inflammatory reaction. An upper gastrointestinal series showed obstruction of the elevated jejunum. An abdominal computed tomography scan suggested upper bowel obstruction. Endoscopic observation and repositioning was selected as an effective approach for treatment considering the patient’s clinical condition and background. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed kinking of the elevated jejunum, easy passage through to the anal intestine, and no evidence of mucosal edema, stenosis of the Roux-en-Y anastomosis, bowel ischemia, or necrosis. After endoscopic repositioning, upper gastrointestinal series showed good passage of the jejunum and no evidence of bowel obstruction. At the 6-month follow-up examination, the patient was in good condition and had no complaints. Conclusion We concluded that early endoscopic management should be the effective procedure considered for diagnosis and treatment of early bowel obstruction after gastrectomy in some cases.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The preoperative serum neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, it is still unclear what the NLR reflects precisely. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between the NLR and TNM stage, and the role of NLR as a prognostic factor after liver resection for HCC.
Methods
This retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent liver resection as initial treatment for HCC. The best cut-off value of serum NLR was determined, and overall survival was compared among patients grouped according to TNM stage (I, II and III).
Results
The best cut-off value for NLR was 2·8. A high preoperative NLR was more frequently associated with poor overall survival than a low preoperative NLR after resection for TNM stage I tumours (5-year survival 45·0 versus 76·4 per cent, P < 0·001), but not stage II (P = 0·283) or stage III (P = 0·155) tumours. Among patients with TNM stage I disease, the proportion of patients with extrahepatic recurrence was greater in the group with a high preoperative NLR than in the low-NLR group (P = 0·006). In multivariable analysis, preoperative NLR was the strongest independent prognostic risk factor for overall survival in TNM stage I (hazard ratio 2·69, 95 per cent c.i. 1·57 to 4·59; P < 0·001).
Conclusion
Preoperative NLR was an important prognostic factor for TNM stage I HCC after liver resection with curative intent. These results suggest that the NLR may reflect the malignant potential of HCC.

Abstract
Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), endogenous molecules released from injured or dying cells, evoke sterile inflammation that is not induced by microbial pathogens. Periodontal diseases are infectious diseases caused by oral microorganisms; however, in some circumstances, DAMPs might initiate inflammatory responses before host cells recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Here, we showed that the necrotic cell supernatant (NCS) functioned as an endogenous danger signal when released from necrotic epithelial cells exposed to repeat freeze thawing. The NCS contained RNA and stimulated the production of inflammatory cytokines interleukin 6 (IL-6) and IL-8 from gingival epithelial cells and gingival fibroblasts. Targeted knockdown of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) in these cells significantly suppressed the ability of the NCS to induce IL-6 and IL-8 production. Epithelial cells and fibroblasts recognized the NCS from heterologous cells. Interestingly, the activation of TLR3, rather than other TLRs, induced TLR2 mRNA expression and proteins in gingival epithelial cells, and pretreatment with the NCS or polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (Poly(I:C)), a strong TLR3 activator, enhanced inflammatory cytokine production induced by subsequent stimulation with Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) lipopolysaccharide, a TLR2 agonist. Moreover, the NCS reduced the expression of epithelial tight junction molecules zona occludens 1 and occludin and increased the permeability of epithelial tight junctions. These findings suggest that endogenous danger signal molecules such as self-RNA released from necrotic cells are recognized by TLR3 and that a subsequent increase of TLR2 expression in periodontal compartments such as gingival epithelial cells and gingival fibroblasts may enhance the inflammatory response to periodontopathic microbes recognized by TLR2 such as P. gingivalis, which also disrupts epithelial barrier functions. Thus, DAMPs may be involved in the development and prolongation of periodontal disease.

Abstract
The (photo)physical properties of organometallic complexes are crucially affected by relativistic effects. In a non- or scalar-relativistic picture, triplet states are threefold degenerate. Spin-orbit coupling lifts this degeneracy (zero-field splitting, ZFS) and enables phosphorescence from the three triplet-like states to the ground state. The fine structure and radiative lifetimes of phosphorescent organometallic complexes are important properties for designing efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here we show that experimental ZFSs and phosphorescent lifetimes for a large variety of organometallic complexes are well reproduced by self-consistent spin-orbit coupling TDDFT (SOC-TDDFT) calculations with a continuum solvation model. By comparing with perturbative SOC-TDDFT and gas phase calculations, we find that both full spin-orbit and solvation effects are important for the predicted properties. SOC-TDDFT is thus shown to be a useful predictive tool for the rational design of phosphors in OLEDs and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Serum undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC)/intact osteocalcin (iOC) ratio increased >1.0 in the patients undergoing hemodialysis, particularly in those with high bone turnover state. Consequently, serum ucOC/iOC ratio might lose its significance as a bone metabolic marker to indicate vitamin K deficiency in hemodialysis patients. INTRODUCTION Serum intact osteocalcin (iOC), undercarboxylated OC (ucOC), and the ucOC/iOC ratio are considered clinically relevant indices in pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients, despite their accumulation in uremic serum. METHODS Serum iOC and ucOC were measured along with serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP)-5b in 89 pre-dialysis CKD and 189 HD patients. RESULTS Serum iOC and ucOC showed significantly negative correlations with estimated glomerular filtration rate in pre-dialysis CKD patients, although serum ucOC/iOC ratio did not correlate. Serum ucOC was significantly greater in HD patients than in pre-dialysis CKD patients, while serum iOC did not differ significantly, resulting in serum ucOC/iOC ratio >1.0 in 135 (71.4%) out of 189 HD patients. HD patients with high serum ucOC/iOC ratio (>1.0) had a significantly younger age and significantly higher values of body mass index, serum creatinine, albumin, phosphate, iPTH, and TRACP-5b than those with low ucOC/iOC ratio (≤ 1.0). The baseline iPTH and P1NP correlated with the changes of the ucOC/iOC ratio during the 2 days of the inter-dialytic period. Multivariate analysis showed that log [ucOC/iOC] in HD patients was significantly associated with log [iPTH], log [BAP], or log [TRACP-5b]. CONCLUSIONS Serum ucOC/iOC ratio >1.0 was observed in as high as 71.4% of HD patients, preferentially with high bone turnover state, in comparison with pre-dialysis CKD patients. These data suggested that serum ucOC/iOC ratio might lose its significance as a bone metabolic marker to indicate vitamin K deficiency in HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of immunosuppressive techniques has helped overcome the ABO incompatibility barrier. However, the outcomes of ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation remain a controversial issue with the advent of the anti-CD20 chimeric antibody rituximab. Herein, we report the outcomes of ABOi kidney transplantation with low-dose rituximab. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between June 2006 and April 2013, 42 patients underwent living-related kidney transplantation at our hospital. The patients were divided into 2 groups: ABO-compatible (ABOc; n = 29) and ABOi kidney transplants using low-dose rituximab (100 mg/m(2)) without splenectomy (n = 13). The basic immunosuppression regimen (calcineurin inhibitor [CNI], mycophenolate mofetil [MMF], and steroids) was the same for both groups, except for the use of rituximab and therapeutic apheresis in the ABOi group. We compared post-transplantation renal function, incidents of virus infection, episodes of rejection, and graft survival between the 2 groups. RESULTS In our hospital, 30% of recipients received ABOi kidney transplants. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) did not differ between the groups. Rejection episodes confirmed by biopsy in the ABOc and ABOi groups were 8 (28%) and 4 (31%) patients (P = .833), acute antibody-mediated rejection was observed in 1 (3.5%) and 2 (15%) patients (P = .165), and virus infection was observed in 14 (48%) and 3 (23%) patients (P = .252), respectively. The 5-year patient survival rate was 100% in both groups, and the 5-year graft survival rates were 95% for ABOc and 100% for ABOi transplants (P = .527). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the outcomes of ABOi kidney transplantation with low-dose rituximab are similar to those of ABOc kidney transplantation. Further study is necessary to address the efficacy and safety of ABOi kidney transplantation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether the mutant allele frequency (MAF) may also have predictive implications for tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy in patients with advanced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated lung adenocarcinoma (AELAd) remains unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS Based on a biobanking system in conjunction with our institution, we assessed EGFR mutation status using pyrosequencing (Py) and by outsourcing laboratory tests, such as the Cycleave (Cy) and the Scorpion ARMS (A). RESULTS Out of 705 patients enrolled in the Shizuoka Lung Cancer Mutation Study between July 2011 and March 2013, 102 AELAd patients were identified as carrying the L858R mutation (L858Rm) using Py to analyze histological specimens. Of these 102 patients, the EGFR mutation status was assessed using both Py and Cy in 48 patients: the median MAF of L858R (MAFLR) was 18.5% (range: 8%-82%), and 45 patients (94%) were identified as having an L858Rm using both Py and Cy. Three patients (6%) with discrepant L858Rm findings were only identified using Py. The plotting of a receiver operating characteristic curve to identify the discordance in L858Rm findings showed that the area under the curve for MAFLR was 0.967 (95% confidence interval: 0.91-1) and that an MAFLR of 9% resulted in high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (99%). Also, 29 patients with AELAd, excluding those with postoperative recurrences, had their L858R status assessed using Cy or A. The median age, 69 years (range: 47-84 years); male/female, 14 (48%)/15 (52%); smokers/never-smokers 13 (45%)/16 (55%); ECOG PS 0-1/2-3, 26 (90%)/3 (10%); stage IIIB/IV, 4 (14%)/25 (86%); median MAFLR, 18% (range: 8%-63%). Patients with an MAFLR of ≤9% had a significantly shorter progression-free survival (PFS) period after TKI therapy than those with an MAFLR of >9% (mPFS: 92 versus 284 days, P = 0.0027). CONCLUSION The MAF may be a potential predictive factor of TKI treatment efficacy in patients with AELAd carrying the L858Rm.

Abstract
AIMS The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The aim of the present study was to investigate intrarenal RAS activity in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS We measured urinary angiotensinogen, a reliable biomarker of intrarenal RAS activity, in 14 controls without T2DM, 25 T2DM patients without nephropathy, 11 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients without T2DM and 46 CKD patients with T2DM. Associations between urinary angiotensinogen and clinical parameters were examined. RESULTS Compared with the controls, urinary [angiotensinogen:creatinine] were significantly higher in T2DM patients without nephropathy (4.70 ± 2.22 vs. 8.31 ± 5.27 μg/g, p=0.037). Age, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fasting plasma glucose correlated significantly and positively with the log{urinary [angiotensinogen:creatinine]} (r=0.632, p=0.007; r=0.405, p=0.027; r=0.583, p=0.003, respectively) in T2DM patients without nephropathy. In contrast, the urinary [angiotensinogen:creatinine] were not significantly different between CKD patients with and without T2DM (22.7 ± 27.8 vs. 33.5 ± 40.8 μg/g, p=0.740); although they were significantly higher when compared with non-CKD patients. In the CKD patients with T2DM systolic blood pressure, serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate and urinary [albumin:creatinine] correlated significantly with the log{urinary [angiotensinogen:creatinine]} (r=0.412, p=0.004; r=0.308, p=0.037; r=-0.382, p=0.001; r=0.648, p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that poor glycemic control is significantly associated with intrarenal RAS activity in T2DM patients without nephropathy, and that decreased renal function is significantly associated with intrarenal RAS activity in CKD patients with T2DM.

Abstract
BE-40644 is a tetracyclic metabolite of Actinoplanes sp. A 40644 possessing a sesquiterpene-substituted p-benzoquinone structure with cis-fused B/C ring stereochemistry that inhibits the human thioredoxin system as the well as the growth of several cancer cell lines. Its B/C trans-fused stereoisomer at C-6a was synthesized as a racemate starting from geranylacetone and 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid.

AIMS To examine whether glomerular hemodynamic parameters in humans are associated with glycemic control indices, by simultaneously measuring clearance of inulin (Cin) and para-aminohippuric acid (CPHA). METHODS Thirty-one subjects (age 55.4±14.7 years; 15 men and 16 women; 21 diabetics and 10 non-diabetics) were enrolled. Cin and CPAH were measured simultaneously. Afferent arteriolar resistance (Ra), efferent arteriolar resistance (Re), glomerular hydrostatic pressure (Pglo) and glomerular filtration fraction (FF) were calculated according to Gomez' formula. RESULTS FF correlated significantly and positively with fasting plasma glucose (FPG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and glycated albumin (GA) (r=0.396, p=0.0303; r=0.587, p=0.0007; r=0.525, p=0.0070, respectively). Pglo correlated significantly and positively with FPG, HbA1c and GA (r=0.572, p=0.0008; r=0.535, p=0.0019; r=0.540, p=0.0053, respectively). Although there was no significant correlation between Ra and glycemic control indices, Re correlated significantly and positively with HbA1c and GA (r=0.499, p=0.0043; r=0.592, p=0.0018, respectively). FF, Pglo and Re were associated significantly with HbA1c and GA after adjustment for age. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate, in humans, that poor glycemic control is associated with increased Re, but not Ra. It is suggested that increased Re causes increased Pglo, leading to increased FF. Thus, hemodynamic abnormalities with poor glycemic control may be related to glomerular hypertension in humans.

Abstract
Asymmetry is required by most numerical simulations of stellar core-collapse explosions, but the form it takes differs significantly among models. The spatial distribution of radioactive (44)Ti, synthesized in an exploding star near the boundary between material falling back onto the collapsing core and that ejected into the surrounding medium, directly probes the explosion asymmetries. Cassiopeia A is a young, nearby, core-collapse remnant from which (44)Ti emission has previously been detected but not imaged. Asymmetries in the explosion have been indirectly inferred from a high ratio of observed (44)Ti emission to estimated (56)Ni emission, from optical light echoes, and from jet-like features seen in the X-ray and optical ejecta. Here we report spatial maps and spectral properties of the (44)Ti in Cassiopeia A. This may explain the unexpected lack of correlation between the (44)Ti and iron X-ray emission, the latter being visible only in shock-heated material. The observed spatial distribution rules out symmetric explosions even with a high level of convective mixing, as well as highly asymmetric bipolar explosions resulting from a fast-rotating progenitor. Instead, these observations provide strong evidence for the development of low-mode convective instabilities in core-collapse supernovae.

Abstract
Reduction en masse of inguinal hernia is an extremely rare complication arising from manual reduction of a hernia. The hernial content remaining in the hernia sac returns above the inguinal canal but remains in the abdominal wall. Accurate preoperative diagnosis of reduction en masse of inguinal hernia is challenging because the hernia appears to be reduced upon physical examination. We experienced two cases of reduction en masse. In both cases, multidetector row computed tomography revealed a closed loop obstruction near the inguinal fossa. In addition, we observed a continuous tract of the hernia sac to the inguinal canal and prominent peritoneal thickening suggestive of the hernia sac.

Abstract
Electroantennograms (EAGs) were recorded fromD. ponderosae to the enantiomers of the terpenoid bark-beetle pheromonestrans-verbenol,cis-verbenol, verbenone, and the bicyclic ketals frontalin,exo-brevicomin, andendo-brevicomin. Male and female responses to enantiomers of the terpenoids differed significantly only at the two highest concentrations. No sex differences were seen in response to the bicyclic ketals. Significantly different responses to the enantiomers of all the chemicals, except frontalin, were noted over at least part of the dosage-response ranges tested. The negative antipode for all of the terpenoids elicited higher responses, while for the bicyclic ketals, the positive antipode effected the largest responses except for the two highest concentrations ofexo-brevicomin.

Abstract
The absolute configuration of the sex pheromone of the Israeli pine bast scale,Matsucoccus josephi, was determined as (2E,5R,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one, designated here asR-E with 10% (2E,5S,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one, designated asS-E. The chirality of the quantitatively minorZ isomer was (2E,5R,6Z,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one (R-Z). Chiral assignments were made by comparative gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of naturalM. josephi pheromone with stereoselectively synthesized stereoisomers on a chiral Cyclodex-B column, which separated the enantiomers with baseline resolution. In gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of the racemicZ andE isomers, the latter elicited the stronger antennal response by maleM. josephi. In GC-EAD of all four stereoisomers, employing the chiral column,R-E was the most active stereoisomer. In field testsR-E attracted 10 times more males ofM. josephi than didS-E. The racemicE/Z pheromone mixture, containing all four stereoisomers in approximately equal amounts, attracted as many maleM. josephi as did an equivalent amount ofR-E, indicating that the other stereoisomers are not inhibitory. The same keto-diene moiety with the same chiral center and configuration in all three known Matsucoccidae sex pheromones implies a common biosynthetic pathway and phylogenetic relationship.

Abstract
Coupled GC-EAG techniques have been applied to the study of volatiles from the grain weevil,Sitophilus granarius. for the first time. The size of EAG response was independent of the sex of the responding insect but was consistently larger to extracts of males than those of females. This difference was reflected in a behavioral preference for the male extracts by mated adults of both sexes tested together and virgin adults of both sexes tested separately. The GC-EAG results provide evidence for two materials that are released specifically by the males. Using circular dichroism. one has been found to be identical stereochemically with the (2S,3R)-sitophilate reported by others as the aggregation pheromone in a different strain. This enhances the prospects for the development of a single pheromone lure that would be generally applicable whatever the origin of the strain. The small amount of sitophilate found in the males suggests that it is not stored in large amounts. The other material, present in such a small amount that it has yet to be fully characterized, elicits a higher antennal activity than sitophilate and may have a significant role to play in enhancing the trap catch of this economically important pest.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that topical application of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 enhanced periodontal tissue regeneration. Although angiogenesis is a crucial event for tissue regeneration, the mechanism(s) by which topically applied FGF-2 induces angiogenesis in periodontal tissues has not been fully clarified. In this study, we investigated whether FGF-2 could induce vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A expression in periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and whether cell-to-cell interactions between PDL cells and endothelial cells could stimulate angiogenesis. FGF-2 induced VEGF-A secretion from MPDL22 cells (mouse periodontal ligament cell line) in a dose-dependent manner. Transwell and wound-healing assays revealed that co-stimulation with FGF-2 plus VEGF-A synergistically stimulated the migration of MPDL22 cells. Interestingly, co-culture of MPDL22 cells with bEnd5 cells (mouse endothelial cell line) also stimulated VEGF-A production from MPDL22 cells and tube formation by bEnd5 cells. Furthermore, time-lapse analysis revealed that MPDL22 cells migrated close to the tube-forming bEnd5 cells, mimicking pericytes. Thus, FGF-2 induces VEGF-A expression in PDL cells and induces angiogenesis in combination with VEGF-A. Cell-to-cell interactions with PDL cells also facilitate angiogenesis.
