Abstract
Pathogen virulence factors and the host inflammatory response cause tissue injury associated with respiratory tract infections. The azalide azithromycin has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of these infections. It has been demonstrated previously that induction of polymorphonuclear leucocyte (PMN) apoptosis is associated with minimization of tissue damage and inflammation in the lung. We hypothesized that, in addition to its antibacterial effects, azithromycin may promote apoptosis. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of azithromycin on PMN apoptosis, oxidative function and interleukin-8 (IL-8) production in the presence or absence of Streptococcus pneumoniae, in comparison with penicillin, erythromycin, dexamethasone or phosphate-buffered saline. Human circulating PMNs were assessed for apoptosis (by annexin V labelling and ELISA), oxidative function (by nitroblue tetrazolium reduction) and IL-8 production (by ELISA). Azithromycin significantly induced PMN apoptosis in the absence of S. pneumoniae after 1 h (10.27% +/- 1.48%, compared with 2.19% +/- 0.42% in controls) to levels similar to those after 3 h induction with tumour necrosis factor-alpha (8. 73% +/- 1.86%). This effect was abolished in the presence of S. pneumoniae. Apoptosis in PMNs exposed to the other drugs was not significantly different from that in controls. Azithromycin did not affect PMN oxidative metabolism or IL-8 production. In summary, azithromycin-induced PMN apoptosis may be detected in the absence of any effect on PMN function, and the pro-apoptotic properties of azithromycin are inhibited in the presence of S. pneumoniae.

Abstract
In this study, the prevalence of Giardia duodenalis infections was determined in Western Canadian and Western Australian dairy calves. Faecal samples were collected from Holstein calves located on a commercial dairy near Lethbridge, Alta., Canada (N=28) and from calves located on two commercial dairies located near Perth, WA, Australia (N=36). Faecal samples were examined for the presence of Giardia cysts using sucrose gradient centrifugation, followed by immunofluoresence microscopy. DNA was then extracted from Giardia isolates obtained from positive samples. A PCR based method was employed to amplify and sequence a 292bp region of the 16S-rRNA gene. Genetic sequences obtained from Giardia isolates were compared to each other and to previously sequenced isolates. Following a single faecal sample, 58% of Western Australian calves and 57% of Western Canadian calves were positive for Giardia. Geometric mean cyst counts/g of faeces were 839 for Western Australian calves and 3475 for Western Canadian calves, but these values did not differ significantly. Genetic sequences were obtained from 10 calves from Western Canada, while six sequences were obtained from Western Australian calves. Of the Western Canadian isolates, eight aligned with the proposed 'Hoofed livestock' genotype. Of the five isolates obtained from Western Australian calves, four sequences were identical to the 'Hoofed livestock' genotype. Two isolates from the Western Canadian calves and one isolate from the Western Australian calves had the identical genetic sequence to the Genotype (Assemblage) A sequence, a common human genotype. The results of this study demonstrate, for the first time, that Giardia infections occur in Western Australian calves. Also, calves from different geographical locations appear to be primarily infected with a Giardia genotype unique to hoofed livestock. However, calves can shed Giardia cysts potentially infective for humans. Thus, Giardia infections should be considered important to Australian dairy producers, and infections in calves may pose a risk to public health regardless of geographical location.

Abstract
Ten Jersey steers (484 ± 55 kg) were fed a basal diet of 70% rolled barley grain and 30% alfalfa silage [dry matter (DM) basis] with or without additives, in a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square experiment. Treatments (additives per kilogram dietary DM) were: C, no additives (control); T, Tween 80 (2 g kg−1); SH, salinomycin (13 mg kg−1); TSM, Tween 80 (2 g kg−1) plus salinomycin (6.5 mg kg−1); and TSL, Tween 80 (2 g kg−1) plus salinomycin (3.25 mg kg−1). Ruminal pH, concentrations of ammonia, total free amino acids, reducing sugars and total volatile fatty acids (VFA), and fluid phase viscosity were unaffected (P > 0.05) by treatment. Ruminal carboxymethylcellulase, xylanase and amylase activities, numbers of protozoa, and outflow rates of the liquid and solid phases of ruminal contents did not differ (P > 0.05) among treatments. Ruminal lactic acid bacteria populations tended (P < 0.1) to be smaller with SH compared with C, but counts were unaffected (P > 0.05) by T, TSL and TSM. Partitioning of ruminal digesta and microbial protein flow were similar (P > 0.05) among treatments. Compared with C, the ruminal rate of degradation (in situ) of alfalfa DM tended to be higher (P < 0.10) with SH, and the rate of barley grain DM degradation was higher (P < 0.05) with T. Intake and apparent digestibilities of DM, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and crude protein were unaffected (P > 0.05) by treatment, as were blood glucose and urea levels. Tween 80 and salinomycin did not affect ruminal fermentation or nutrient digestibility in steers fed a barley grain/alfalfa silage diet. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare rates of healing of donor sites in pigs between those dressed with silver-coated dressings and those dressed with petrolatum-impregnated absorbent gauze. DESIGN Open study with each animal acting as its own control. SETTING University research facility, Canada. ANIMALS 6 young specific-pathogen-free domestic pigs. INTERVENTIONS A total of 72 wounds about 1 cm x 2 cm x 0.4 mm were made in rows of eight on each pig with a dermatome. They were divided into three groups of 24, and dressed with petrolatum gauze, or silver-coated dressings moistened with sterile water either once only or daily for 10 days. All dressings were secured in place with an elastic bandage. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Erythema, infection, epidermal migration, and healing. RESULTS Wounds dressed with moistened silver-coated dressings re-epithelialised significantly more quickly. This resulted in complete re-epithelialisation within 70% of the time taken by those wounds dressed with petrolatum gauze. CONCLUSION Silver-coated dressings provide a moist environment for the healing wound combined with an effective antimicrobial agent, and this significantly accelerates healing compared with wounds dressed with traditional petrolatum gauze dressings.

Abstract
Recently, a Giardia vaccine has become commercially available in the USA for prevention of clinical signs of giardiasis and reduction of cyst shedding in dogs and cats. The vaccine is based upon the current state of knowledge of Giardia antigenicity and immunology. Here, Merle Olson, Howard Ceri and Douglas Morck describe studies that led to the development of this vaccine and subsequent efficacy studies. Immunoprophylaxis and immunotherapeutic application of the vaccine are discussed.

Abstract
In this 90-day study, 60 male Holstein dairy calves were experimentally infected with Giardia duodenalis. Calves were randomly blocked by weight into treatment (N=30) and placebo (N=30) groups. Beginning on study Day 0, calves in the treatment group were administered an oral dose of 5mg/kg of fenbendazole once daily for three consecutive days. Calves in the placebo group received a daily oral treatment of 5 ml of saline for 3 days. These treatments were repeated on Days 30 and 60 of the study. Fecal samples were collected from calves once per week and examined for the presence of Giardia cysts. Calves were monitored daily for clinical signs of intestinal disease and all episodes of diarrhea recorded. Calves were weighed once per week and total feed intake, on a dry matter basis, was calculated daily. Following each treatment, the number of calves shedding Giardia cysts in the fenbendazole group was reduced (p<0.001) compared to the saline group. Also, calves in the fenbendazole group had fewer cysts (p<0.05) detected in their feces following treatment compared with calves that received saline. Within 2 weeks post treatment, the number of infected animals and fecal Giardia cysts returned to placebo levels. This pattern of reinfection was consistent after every treatment period. Calves receiving fenbendazole had fewer total days with diarrhea (p<0.01) and the average number of days each calf had diarrhea was reduced (p<0.05), compared to the placebo group. There were no differences in mean body weight, average daily gain, or feed intake between the treatment or placebo groups. This study demonstrates that fenbendazole is an effective treatment for giardiosis, resulting in a clinical benefit and reducing the number of infective cysts shed by calves. However, this treatment regime had no impact on production parameters and reinfection occurred rapidly in these calves.

Abstract
Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an important agent of induction of ocular pathology following corneal injury or wearing of contaminated contact lenses. The mechanism of LPS uptake through the corneal epithelium is unclear, and the role played by inflammatory cells in this phenomenon has not been previously assessed. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled LPS from Escherichia coli was deposited onto the abraded corneas of New Zealand White rabbits. Epifluorescence microscopy of living excised corneas revealed diffuse LPS staining in the epithelial and stromal layers only in the vicinity of the abrasion. In addition, specific cellular uptake of LPS was suggested by fluorescence staining of cells along the abrasion site. In a second series of experiments, an anti-CD18 polyclonal antibody was used to block infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) into the cornea. In these experiments, a diffuse distribution of fluorescent LPS was still observed along the abrasion, but the specific cellular uptake was abolished. The findings indicate that LPS enters the cornea via diffuse penetration at sites of injury and that specific cellular uptake of LPS occurs within the cornea via PMN which have migrated into the damaged tissue.

Abstract
The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) is a transmembrane glycoprotein with an intrinsic tyrosine kinase. Ligand-binding to the EGFr activates cell signaling, phosphorylates protein kinases, and rearranges cytoskeletal proteins - responses that resemble those induced by microbial attachment to cell surfaces, a process known to be mediated by host cell receptors in a number of cases. This article critically reviews the possible role played by the EGFr in microbial colonization, and discusses how modulation of the EGF-EGFr axis may affect infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Mucosal immunity was established in the rat prostate by stimulating the common mucosal system through serosal exposure of formalin-killed Escherichia coli. Immunized but not sham-immunized rats developed bacterial specific IgG and IgA in prostatic fluid, and IgA in urine. Immunized (n = 21) and sham-immunized control rats (n = 30) were challenged by transurethral injection of E. coli into the prostate ducts. Mortality, gross and microscopic pathology, tissue bacterial counts, bacterial associated immunoglobulins, and antibody titers in serum and urine were assessed at 7 days following the challenge. Increased E. coli specific immunoglobulin titers were seen in immunized rats, and E. coli, but not Proteus, found in the prostates of immunized animals were coated with IgG and IgA. Immunization protected against toxaemia and septicemia, seen as a rare complication of acute prostatitis, but did not protect against acute prostatitis, nor alter the degree of tissue damage seen in the rat model.Key words: prostatitis, mucosal immunity, rat model.

Abstract
Nonionic surfactants are commonly present in many prepared foods and drug formulations as stabilizing agents. The aim of the current study was to examine the effect of the common nonionic surfactant Tween-80 on jejunal glucose transport. New Zealand White rabbits (800-1200 g) were fasted for 24 hr. Jejunal tissue was stripped and mounted in short-circuited Ussing chambers. Unidirectional 3-O-methyl glucose fluxes were determined during a 15-min basal transport period and a subsequent 15-min experimental period after the mucosal addition of Tween-80 at final concentrations of 0.001%, 0.01%, 0.05%, and 0.1%. Tween-80 at final concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05% significantly increased net 3-O-methyl glucose transport over basal levels. The increase in Jnet was due to a significant increase in the absorptive Jm-s flux. Tween-80 at 0.01% and 0.001% did not significantly alter net glucose transport although Jm-s was significantly increased in the presence of 0.01% Tween-80. Tween-80, in concentrations commonly found in prepared foods, enhances the intestinal absorption of glucose.

Abstract
Development of drug treatments for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing has been impeded by the lack of animal models. The obese pig may be a suitable animal model, as it has been reported to experience sleep-disordered breathing resembling human obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail techniques for chronic instrumentation of the obese Vietnamese pot-bellied pig and to study respiratory function during sleep. Under general anesthesia, four obese pigs were instrumented for long-term recording of intrapleural and tracheal pressures, genioglossal EMG, and bioelectric signals related to sleep. A custom-fitted face mask was used to record respiratory variables including airflow, snoring, and expired CO(2). Most chronic instrumentation provided robust signals for up to 6 wk after installation. All pigs displayed sleep-disordered breathing characterized by increased resistance to airflow, snoring, inspiratory flow limitation, and possible sleep disruption. Apneas and hypopneas were not a feature of breathing during sleep in these animals. Nonetheless, this animal preparation may be useful for exploring possible drug treatments for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing.

Abstract
Determination of the MIC, based on the activities of antibiotics against planktonic bacteria, is the standard assay for antibiotic susceptibility testing. Adherent bacterial populations (biofilms) present with an innate lack of antibiotic susceptibility not seen in the same bacteria grown as planktonic populations. The Calgary Biofilm Device (CBD) is described as a new technology for the rapid and reproducible assay of biofilm susceptibilities to antibiotics. The CBD produces 96 equivalent biofilms for the assay of antibiotic susceptibilities by the standard 96-well technology. Biofilm formation was followed by quantitative microbiology and scanning electron microscopy. Susceptibility to a standard group of antibiotics was determined for National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) reference strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213. Growth curves demonstrated that biofilms of a predetermined size could be formed on the CBD at specific time points and, furthermore, that no significant difference (P > 0.1) was seen between biofilms formed on each of the 96 pegs. The antibiotic susceptibilities for planktonic populations obtained by the NCCLS method or from the CBD were similar. Minimal biofilm eradication concentrations, derived by using the CBD, demonstrated that for biofilms of the same organisms, 100 to 1,000 times the concentration of a certain antibiotic were often required for the antibiotic to be effective, while other antibiotics were found to be effective at the MICs. The CBD offers a new technology for the rational selection of antibiotics effective against microbial biofilms and for the screening of new effective antibiotic compounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine duration of infection and association of infection with diarrhea for dairy calves with naturally acquired cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis. DESIGN Cohort study. ANIMALS 20 Holstein calves on a single dairy farm. PROCEDURE Fecal samples were collected 3 times/wk for the first 45 days after birth, then weekly until calves were 120 days old and examined for Giardia duodenalis cysts and Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. Calves were monitored for diarrhea during the first 45 days after birth; during each episode of diarrhea, fecal samples were examined for parasitic, bacterial, and viral pathogens. RESULTS All 20 calves shed Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts at some time during the study. Mean ages at which Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts were first detected were 31.5 and 16.3 days, respectively. Mean number of Giardia cysts in feces remained high throughout the study, whereas Cryptosporidium occysts decreased to low or undetectable numbers 2 weeks after infection. Eighteen calves had a total of 38 episodes of diarrhea during the first 45 days after birth. Giardia duodenalis was the only pathogen identified during 6 (16%) episodes, C parvum was the only pathogen identified during 9 (24%) episodes, and G duodenalis and C parvum were identified together during 10 (26%) episodes. CONCLUSIONS Prevalences of giardiosis and cryptosporidiosis were high in these calves, and both parasites were associated with development of diarrhea. Cryptosporidium parvum was an important pathogen when calves were < 1 month old, but G duodenalis was more important when calves were older. Calves cleared C parvum infections within 2 weeks; however, G duodenalis infections became chronic in these calves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sudden, explosive episodes of rage occur in a significant number of clinically referred children with Tourette's disorder and cause considerable psychosocial morbidity. The etiology of these symptoms is unknown. We conducted a pilot study of 12 consecutive children with Tourette's disorder and rage attacks to determine whether comorbidity of Tourette's-associated disorders is related to these symptoms. METHOD Twelve consecutive children with Tourette's disorder who presented with rage attacks were evaluated, including 2 females and 10 males. Tourette's disorder diagnosis, presence of comorbid disorders, and tic severity were assessed using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and standardized rating scales. RESULTS All 12 children met diagnostic criteria for Tourette's disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Two children were also diagnosed with comorbid oppositional defiant disorder, and 4 children were diagnosed with comorbid conduct disorder. None of the subjects met diagnostic criteria for a mood disorder. All subjects had only mild tic severity. CONCLUSION The clinical phenomenon of rage attacks in children with Tourette's disorder resembles intermittent explosive disorder and may reflect specific underlying neurologic disturbances. This pilot study suggests that rage attacks in Tourette's disorder may be related to the presence of comorbid disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Autologous fat has been used as a bulking implant material for stress urinary incontinence. There is considerable controversy as to the ultimate fate of the grafted fat. This study was conducted to determine the fate of autogenous fat implanted into the bladder of rats. METHODS Two groups of adult female rats were studied. In the test animals (group 1, n = 20), mesenteric adipose tissue (1 mL) was harvested and homogenized with an equal weight of sterile saline. Using a 25-gauge needle, 0.5 g of saline-fat mixture was injected into the dorsal bladder neck submucosa. Control animals (group 2, n = 12) were injected with sterile saline only. A subset of animals from each group were killed after 7, 35, 105, and 1 50 days, and the bladder and urethra were fixed. The fixed tissue was examined microscopically and photographed at each follow-up period. RESULTS Seven days after injection of fat, there was a pronounced acute inflammatory reaction with numerous polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages at the site of fat injection. There was minimal inflammatory reaction at the site of saline injection. By day 35, most of the fat had been eliminated by these phagocytes because of severe acute and chronic inflammation. By day 105, the submucosa tissue of the experimental rats had returned to normal visually and to a flat surface, lacking the appearance of a sizable "bulge" as shown at days 0 and 7. Histopathologic findings were also similar to the control rats. Inflammatory cells were no longer present by day 105. CONCLUSIONS The implantation of homogenized, autologous fat in the rat urinary bladder submucosa causes acute and chronic inflammation and fat necrosis. The severe phagocytosis at the implant sites eliminates the vast majority of the devitalized implanted fat during the first month.

Abstract
The increased intestinal absorption induced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) is associated with diffuse lengthening of brush border microvilli. The aim of this study was to examine the in vivo effects of oral administration of EGF during infection with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli. New Zealand White rabbits (4 weeks old) received orogastric EGF daily starting 3 days prior to infection with enteropathogenic E. coli RDEC-1 and were compared with sham-treated infected animals and uninfected controls. Weight gain, food intake, fecal E. coli, and stool consistency were assessed daily. On day 10, segments of jejunum, ileum, proximal, and distal colon were assessed for gram-negative bacterial colonization, disaccharidase activities, and epithelial ultrastructure. Effects of EGF on E. coli RDEC-1 proliferation were studied in vitro. E. coli RDEC-1 caused diarrhea and reduced weight gain. Seven days postinfection, the small and large intestines were colonized with numerous bacteria, brush border microvilli were disrupted, and maltase and sucrase activities were significantly reduced in the jejunum. Daily treatment with EGF prevented the occurrence of diarrhea and reduction of weight gain. These effects were associated with significant inhibition of E. coli colonization in the small and large intestine, improved jejunal maltase and sucrase activities and reduced microvillous injury. EGF did not affect the proliferation of E. coli in vitro. The findings suggest that EGF protects the gastrointestinal tract against colonization by enteropathogenic E. coli.

Abstract
A unique characteristic of some new etching systems is that they combine the conditioning and priming agents into a single acidic primer solution. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on the shear bond strength and the bracket/adhesive failure mode when an acidic primer and other enamel etchants were used to condition the enamel surface before bonding. The brackets were bonded to extracted human teeth according to one of four protocols following the manufacturers instructions. Group I, teeth were etched with 37% phosphoric acid, the brackets were then bonded with System 1+ adhesive (Ormco Corporation. Orange, Calif.); group II, teeth were etched with 10% maleic acid, the brackets were also bonded with System 1+ adhesive; group III, an acidic primer that contains both the acid (phenyl-P) and the primer (hema and dimethacrylate) were placed on the enamel for 30 seconds. The adhesive used on this group was a lightly filled resin that contains Bis-GMA and HEMA. (Clearfil Liner Bond 2. J.C. Moritta, Kuraway, Japan); Group IV, the same acidic primer was used as in group II, the adhesive used was highly filled (Panavia 21. J.C. Moritta) and contains Bis-GMA. The present in vitro findings indicated that the use of acidic primers to bond orthodontic brackets to the enamel surface could provide clinically acceptable shear bond forces (x = 10.4 +/- 4.4 MPa) when used with a highly (77%) filled adhesive (Panavia 21). These debonding forces were comparable to those obtained when the enamel was conditioned with either Phosphoric (x = 11.8 +/- 4.1 MPa) or Maleic (x = 10.9 +/- 4.4 MPa) acids. With the use of a lightly (10%) filled adhesive (Clearfil Liner Bond 2), the shear bond strength was significantly lower (x = 5.9 +/- 5.6 MPa). It is of interest to note that there was a tendency to have less residual adhesive remaining on the tooth when an acid primer was used than when phosphoric and maleic acids were used. This might be of advantage to the clinician because it will require less time to clean the teeth after debonding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether tilmicosin alters neutrophil infiltration or function, induces neutrophil apoptosis, and affects accumulation of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) or tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in lungs of calves experimentally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica. ANIMALS 12 weight-ranked Holstein calves. PROCEDURE Calves were given 25% propylene glycol vehicle (n = 5) or tilmicosin (10 mg/kg of body weight; n = 6) subcutaneously, 18 hours and 15 minutes before intratracheal infection with 2 x 10(8) P haemolytica organisms. Two unmanipulated calves served as controls in some experiments. Rectal temperatures were recorded 15 minutes before, and at 3-hour intervals after infection for 24 hours. Samples obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage performed 3 and 24 hours after infection were used to assess colonization by P haemolytica, and neutrophil infiltration. Neutrophil phagocytosis of P haemolytica, membrane leakage as determined by trypan blue exclusion, oxidative function as determined by nitro blue tetrazolium reduction, and apoptosis, using electron microscopy and DNA fragmentation ELISA, were determined. SOluble TNF-alpha and LTB4 were measured from supernatants from bronchoalveolar lavage samples, using ELISA. RESULTS Treatment with tilmicosin resulted in significant (P < 0.05) clearance of P haemolytica and neutrophil apoptosis at 3 hours, and decreased concentration of LTB4 at 24 hours. Rectal temperatures, neutrophil infiltration, phagocytosis, oxidative functions, membrane leakage, and soluble TNF-alpha concentrations were not significantly affected by tilmicosin. CONCLUSION Tilmicosin effectively controlled P haemolytica infection, induced neutrophil apoptosis, reduced pulmonary inflammation, and did not affect neutrophil infiltration or function. CLINICAL RELEVANCE By inducing neutrophil apoptosis, tilmicosin prevents further amplification of inflammatory injury in P haemolytica-infected lungs.

Abstract
Twenty-three protozoan-free lambs were experimentally infected with Giardia duodenalis trophozoites at 6 weeks of age, while 24 controls lambs were not challenged. Weekly blood samples were taken and faecal cyst counts monitored for 11 weeks following infection. All experimentally infected lambs remained infected throughout the 11 week study period and control animals remained free of the parasite. Giardia-specific serum IgM, IgG and IgA antibody titers were determined weekly in 10 infected and 10 control lambs by enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Western blot analysis of serum immunoglobulins to proteins derived from four different Giardia isolates (S2, WB, D3 and NF) was performed. Weekly mean control IgM, IgG and IgA titers did not change throughout the study. Infected lambs showed no difference in IgM titers between weeks 0 and 11, but IgG and IgA titers of infected lambs differed from the preimmune (week 0) serum titer at weeks 5, 7, 9, 11 and weeks 5, 9 and 11 respectively. SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed homogeneity in the proteins of the four Giardia isolates. Antigenic proteins were also similar for all four isolates; however, the proteins recognized by IgM, IgG and IgA antibodies differed. The weak immune response of lambs to Giardia may account for the chronic nature of this disease in sheep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether ceftiofur sodium would be useful for treatment of acute interdigital phlegmon (foot rot) in cattle. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. ANIMALS 308 cross-bred yearling steers with clinical signs of acute interdigital phlegmon (i.e., lameness with interdigital swelling, interdigital lesions, or both). PROCEDURE Steers were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: ceftiofur at a dosage of 0.1 mg/kg (0.045 mg/lb) of body weight, IM, every 24 hours; ceftiofur at a dosage of 1.0 mg/kg (0.45 mg/lb), IM, every 24 hours, and oxytetracycline at a dosage of 6.6 mg/kg (3 mg/lb), IM, every 24 hours. All animals were treated for 3 days; treatment was considered successful if animals were no longer lame on day 4. Biopsy specimens were collected prior to treatment from 5 animals in each group and submitted for anaerobic bacterial culture and histologic examination. RESULTS Success rates for the high-dosage ceftiofur (94/129; 73%) and oxytetracycline (87/128; 68%) groups were significantly higher than that for the low-dosage ceftiofur group (5/50; 10%), but there were no significant differences between the high-dosage ceftiofur and oxytetracycline groups. Anaerobic bacteria most frequently isolated from biopsy specimens were Porphyromonas levii and Provetella intermedia. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Use of ceftiofur at a dosage of 1.0 mg/kg for treatment of cattle with acute interdigital phlegmon was as effective as use of oxytetracycline at a dosage of 6.6 mg/kg. However, ceftiofur has a negligible withdrawal time and, therefore, may be a better choice for treatment of near-market weight animals.

Abstract
Ovine footrot is a contagious disease of sheep that occurs in temperature climates. It is caused by the strict anaerobe, Dichelobacter nodosus. Benign and virulent organisms are differentiated according to serotype and protease production. This study was conducted to identify the presence of virulent serotypes of D. nodosus in sheep flocks in Alberta and British Columbia. Dichelobacter nodosus was detected in lame sheep from 11 of 15 (73%) flocks in Alberta and in 4 of 5 (80%) British Columbia flocks. It was recovered from 57 of 107 (53%) lame sheep. In Alberta, 4 distinct serotypes were isolated from the 11 positive flocks while in British Columbia a total of 6 different serotypes were isolated. One British Columbia isolate could not be classified into existing serotypes. Of the 19 field strains tested, all but 3 were defined as virulent based upon the rapid rise in protease activity in vitro which was maintained between 3 and 5 d. The knowledge of the serotype and virulence of the D. nodosus isolated from affected animals can assist in the control and prevention of ovine footrot.

Abstract
Twenty puppies were vaccinated with a trophozoite-derived Giardia vaccine on day 0 and boosted on day 21 (Group 1); 10 control puppies received only saline (Group 2). Both groups were experimentally infected on day 35 with 1 x 10(6) Giardia duodenalis trophozoites by intraduodenal injection. Immunization provided protection to experimental Giardia infection.
