Abstract
We report a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (Møller) scattering: A(PV)=[-175+/-30(stat)+/-20(syst)] x 10(-9). This first direct observation of parity nonconservation in Møller scattering leads to a measurement of the electron's weak charge at low energy Q(e)(W)=-0.053+/-0.011. This is consistent with the standard model expectation at the current level of precision: sin((2)theta(W)(M(Z))((-)MS)=0.2293+/-0.0024(stat)+/-0.0016(syst)+/-0.0006(theory).

Abstract
The structure and infectivity of the oocysts of a new species of Cryptosporidium from the feces of humans are described. Oocysts are structurally indistinguishable from those of Cryptosporidium parvum. Oocysts of the new species are passed fully sporulated, lack sporocysts. and measure 4.4-5.4 microm (mean = 4.86) x 4.4-5.9 microm (mean = 5.2 microm) with a length to width ratio 1.0-1.09 (mean 1.07) (n = 100). Oocysts were not infectious for ARC Swiss mice, nude mice. Wistar rat pups, puppies, kittens or calves, but were infectious to neonatal gnotobiotic pigs. Pathogenicity studies in the gnotobiotic pig model revealed significant differences in parasite-associated lesion distribution (P = 0.005 to P = 0.02) and intensity of infection (P = 0.04) between C. parvum and this newly described species from humans. In vitro cultivation studies have also revealed growth differences between the two species. Multi-locus analysis of numerous unlinked loci, including a preliminary sequence scan of the entire genome demonstrated this species to be distinct from C. parvum and also demonstrated a lack of recombination, providing further support for its species status. Based on biological and molecular data, this Cryptosporidium infecting the intestine of humans is proposed to be a new species Cryptosporidium hominis n. sp.

Abstract
The giant panda is seasonally monoestrus, experiencing a single estrous with spontaneous ovulation in the spring. Therefore, accurate monitoring of the estrous cycle to pinpoint the time of ovulation is critical for the success of timed mating or artificial insemination. Analysis of exfoliated vaginal epithelial cells is a simple technique that rapidly yields information about the estrous status of a panda. Vaginal swabs were obtained during five estrous cycles of two nulliparous females. Cells were stained with the trichrome Papanicolaou and classified as basophils, intermediates or superficials. The color of stained cells, basophilic, acidophilic or keratinized, was recorded as a characteristic independent of the three standard cell types. The day urinary conjugates of estrogen fell from peak levels was considered the day of ovulation. A chromic shift occurred 8-9 days before ovulation when the majority of exfoliated vaginal cells changed from basophilic (blue) to acidophilic (pink) without accompanying nuclear or cytoplasmic changes. A second chromic shift was consistently observed 2 days prior to ovulation when keratinized (orange) cells replaced acidophils as the majority of vaginal cells. Monochrome staining of vaginal cells is sufficient to quantify superficial cells, which is a useful adjunct to behavioral and endocrinological data in determining estrous in the giant panda. However, the timing and duration of superficial cell elevations are substantially different between and within individual females, which limits the accuracy of timing ovulation for artificial insemination. The predictive value of vaginal cytology was greatly enhanced with the trichrome stain and evaluation of cell color.

Abstract
Infection of rat prostates with cytotoxic necrotizing factor type 1 (CNF1)-positive uropathogenic Escherichia coli caused more inflammation-mediated morphological and histological tissue damage than did infection with isogenic CNF1-negative mutants. These striking differences occurred despite the finding that bacterial counts for the strain pairs were indistinguishable. We conclude that CNF1 contributes to E. coli virulence in a model of acute prostatitis. To our knowledge, the results of this study provide the first demonstration of a role for any uropathogenic E. coli virulence factor in acute prostatitis.

Abstract
delta and delta' are required for assembly of the processivity factor beta(2) onto primed DNA in the DNA polymerase III holoenzyme-catalyzed reaction. We developed protocols for generating highly purified preparations of delta and delta'. In holoenzyme reconstitution assays, delta' could not be replaced by delta, tau, or gamma, even when either of the latter were present at a 10,000-fold molar excess. Likewise, delta could not be replaced by delta', tau, or gamma. Bacterial strains bearing chromosomal knockouts of either the holA(delta) or holB(delta') genes were not viable, demonstrating that both delta and delta' are essential. Western blots of isolated initiation complexes demonstrated the presence of both delta and delta'. However, in the absence of chipsi and single-stranded DNA-binding protein, a stable initiation complex lacking deltadelta' was isolated by gel filtration. Lack of delta-delta' decreased the rate of elongation about 3-fold, and the extent of processive replication was significantly decreased. Adding back delta-delta' but not chipsi, delta, or delta' alone restored the diminished activity, indicating that in addition to being key components required for the beta loading activity of the DnaX complex, deltadelta' is present in initiation complex and is required for processive elongation.

Abstract
The CEACAM1 glycoproteins (formerly called biliary glycoproteins; BGP, C-CAM, CD66a, or MHVR) are members of the carcinoembryonic antigen family of cell adhesion molecules. In the mouse, splice variants of CEACAM1 have either two or four immunoglobulin (Ig) domains linked through a transmembrane domain to either a short or a long cytoplasmic tail. CEACAM1 has cell adhesion activity and acts as a signaling molecule, and long-tail isoforms inhibit the growth of colon and prostate tumor cells in rodents. CEACAM1 isoforms serve as receptors for several viral and bacterial pathogens, including the murine coronavirus mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Neisseria meningitidis in humans. To elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the many biological activities of CEACAM1, we modified the expression of the mouse Ceacam1 gene in vivo. Manipulation of the Ceacam1 gene in mouse embryonic stem cells that contained the Ceacam1a allele yielded a partial knockout. We obtained one line of mice in which the insert in the Ceacam1a gene had sustained a recombination event. This resulted in the markedly reduced expression of the two CEACAM1a isoforms with four Ig domains, whereas the expression of the two isoforms with two Ig domains was doubled relative to that in wild-type BALB/c (+/+) mice. Homozygous (p/p) Ceacam1a-targeted mice (Ceacam1aDelta4D) had no gross tissue abnormalities and were viable and fertile; however, they were more resistant to MHV A59 infection and death than normal (+/+) mice. Following intranasal inoculation with MHV A59, p/p mice developed markedly fewer and smaller lesions in the liver than +/+ or heterozygous (+/p) mice. The titers of virus produced in the livers were 50- to 100-fold lower in p/p mice than in +/p or +/+ mice. p/p mice survived a dose 100-fold higher than the lethal dose of virus for +/+ mice. +/p mice were intermediate between +/+ and p/p mice in susceptibility to liver damage, virus growth in liver, and susceptibility to killing by MHV. Ceacam1a-targeted mice provide a new model to study the effects of modulation of receptor expression on susceptibility to MHV infection in vivo.

Abstract
Type I antifreeze protein (AFP) from the winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) was used as an adjuvant to cryosurgery of subcutaneous tumors of Dunning AT-1 rat prostate cells grown in Copenhagen rats. The cryosurgical procedure was performed with a commercially available cryosurgery device (CRYO-HIT, Galil Medical) with clinically relevant single- and double-freeze protocols. Injury was assessed with the alamar blue indicator of metabolic activity. The assay gave anomalous results when used to assess the extent of injury immediately following the procedure, underestimating the extent of injury. However, a double-freeze procedure with antifreeze protein present was found to give significantly better ablation than a double-freeze without AFP or a single-freeze with or without AFP.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide a contemporary qualitative and quantitative analysis of coronary angiograms from a large series of women enrolled in the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) study who had suspected ischemic chest pain. Previous studies have suggested that women with chest pain have a lower prevalence of significant coronary artery disease (CAD) compared with men. Detailed analyses of angiographic findings relative to risk factors and outcomes are not available. All coronary angiograms were reviewed in a central core laboratory. Quantitative measurement of percent stenosis was used to assess the presence and severity of disease. Of the 323 women enrolled in the pilot phase, 34% had no detectable, 23% had measurable but minimal, and 43% had significant ( > 50% diameter stenosis) CAD. Of those with significant CAD, most had multivessel disease. Features suggesting complex plaque were identified in < 10%. Age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, prior myocardial infarction (MI), current hormone replacement therapy, and unstable angina were all significant, independent predictors of presence of significant disease (p < 0.05). Subsequent hospitalization for a cardiac cause occurred more frequently in those women with minimal and significant disease compared with no disease (p = 0.001). The common findings of no and extensive CAD among symptomatic women at coronary angiography highlight the need for better clinical noninvasive evaluations for ischemia. Women with minimal CAD have intermediate rates of rehospitalization and cardiovascular events, and thus should not be considered low risk.

Abstract
Apoptosis is a process of cell suicide whereby individual cells are destroyed while preserving the integrity and architecture of surrounding tissue. This targeted cell destruction is critical both in physiological contexts as well as pathological states. It seems increasingly evident that mitochondria play an important role in the regulation of programmed cell death via release of proapoptotic agents and/or disruption of cellular energy metabolism. The mechanisms of mitochondrial involvement are beginning to be elucidated, and may involve the participation of bcl-2 family members, reactive oxygen species, and caspases. As part of a central mechanism of amplification of the apoptotic signal, mitochondria may be an appropriate target for therapeutic agents designed to modulate apoptosis. This review focuses on recent advances in understanding mitochondrial mechanisms in apoptosis and the involvement of these pathways in human disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated associations between atherosclerosis risk factors (smoking behavior, serum cholesterol, hypertension, body mass index, and functional capacity) and psychological characteristics with suspected linkages to coronary disease (depression, hostility, and anger expression) in an exclusively female cohort. METHODS Six hundred eighty-eight middle-aged women with chest pain warranting clinical investigation completed a comprehensive diagnostic protocol that included quantitative coronary angiography to assess coronary artery disease (CAD). Primary analyses controlled for menopausal status, age, and socioeconomic status variables (income and education). RESULTS High depression scores were associated with a nearly three-fold risk of smoking (odds ratio (OR) = 2.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.4-5.7) after covariate adjustment, and women reporting higher depression symptoms were approximately four times more likely to describe themselves in the lowest category of functional capacity (OR = 3.7, 95% CI = 1.7-7.8). High anger-out scores were associated with a four-fold or greater risk of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (<50 mg/dl; OR = 4.0, 95% CI = 1.4-11.1) and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (>160 mg/dl; OR = 4.8, 95% CI = 1.5-15.7) and a larger body mass index (OR = 3.5, 95% CI = 1.1-10.8) after covariate adjustment. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate consistent and clinically relevant relationships between psychosocial factors and atherosclerosis risk factors among women and may aid our understanding of the increased mortality risk among women reporting high levels of psychological distress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate the ability of psychiatric anxiety-disorder history to discriminate between women with and without angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) in a population with chest pain. BACKGROUND A total of 435 women with chest pain underwent a diagnostic battery including coronary angiography in order to improve testing guidelines for women with suspected CAD. METHODS Women referred for coronary angiography completed questionnaires assessing prior treatment history for anxiety disorder and current anxiety-related symptoms. Analyses controlled for standard CAD risk factors. RESULTS Forty-four women (10%) reported receiving prior treatment for an anxiety disorder. This group acknowledged significantly higher levels of autonomic symptoms (e.g., headaches, muscle tension [F = 25.0, p < 0.0011 and higher behavioral avoidance scores (e.g., avoidance of open places or traveling alone by bus [F = 4.2, p < 0.05]) at baseline testing compared with women without prior anxiety problems. Women with an anxiety-disorder history did not differ from those without such a history with respect to the presence of inducible ischemia or use of nitroglycerin, although they were younger and more likely to describe both "tight" and "sharp" chest pain symptoms and to experience back pain and episodes of nocturnal chest pain. Logistic regression results indicated that the positive-anxiety-history group was more likely to be free of underlying significant angiographic CAD (odds ratio = 2.74, 95% confidence interval 1.15 to 6.5, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Among women with chest pain symptoms, a history of anxiety disorders is associated with a lower probability of significant angiographic CAD. Knowledge of anxiety disorder history may assist in the clinical evaluation of women with chest pain.

Abstract
Bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) is a lentivirus that causes disease in cattle. Despite the large cattle industry in western Canada, the presence of BIV has not been examined to date. Genomic DNA, derived from semen and buffy coat samples, was analyzed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific primers for the gag, pol, and env genes of BIV. Despite utilizing a procedure that detected a minimum of 10 proviral copies, BIV sequences were not amplified in any of 317 buffy coat and 50 semen samples that were obtained from an archive that included 27 cattle breeds, collected from different sources in Alberta (1980-1999). In the 367 DNA samples examined, there was no evidence of BIV infection, suggesting that the prevalence of BIV infection was very low.

BACKGROUND Since the passage of The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994, there has been a flood of new "dietary" supplements promoting anti-aging benefits such as the enhancement of growth hormone or testosterone levels. Androstenediol and androstenedione are such products. This study's purpose was to elucidate the physiological and hormonal effects of 200 mg/d of oral androstenediol and androstenedione supplementation in men aged 35 to 65 years while participating in a 12-week high-intensity resistance training program. METHODS Fifty men not consuming any androgenic-enhancing substances and with normal total testosterone levels, prostate-specific antigen, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, and with no sign of cardiovascular or metabolic diseases participated. Subjects were randomly assigned to a placebo, androstenediol (diol), or androstenedione (dione) group using a double-blind study design. Main outcomes included serum sex hormone profile, body composition assessment, muscular strength, and blood lipid profiles. RESULTS During the 12 weeks of androstenedione or androstenediol use, a significant increase in the aromatization by-products estrone and estradiol was observed in both groups (P =.03). In the dione group, total testosterone levels significantly increased 16% after 1 month of use, but by the end of 12 weeks, they returned to pretreatment levels. This return to baseline levels resulted from increases in aromatization and down-regulation in endogenous testosterone synthesis based on the fact that luteinizing hormone was attenuated 18% to 33% during the treatment period. Neither androstenediol nor androstenedione enhanced the adaptations to resistance training compared with placebo for body composition or muscular strength. However, both androstenediol and androstenedione supplementation adversely affected high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, coronary heart disease risk (representing a 6.5% increase), and each group's respective (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]/HDL-C)/(apolipoprotein A/apolipoprotein B) lipid ratio (diol: +5.2%; dione: +10.5%; P =.05). In contrast, the placebo group's HDL-C levels increased 5.1%, with a 12.3% decline in the (LDL-C/HDL-C)/(apolipoprotein A/apolipoprotein B) lipid ratio. These negative and positive lipid effects occurred despite no significant alterations in body composition or dietary intakes in the supplemental groups or placebo group, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Testosterone precursors do not enhance adaptations to resistance training when consumed in dosages recommended by manufacturers. Testosterone precursor supplementation does result in significant increases in estrogen-related compounds, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate concentrations, down-regulation in testosterone synthesis, and unfavorable alterations in blood lipid and coronary heart disease risk profiles of men aged 35 to 65 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sudden, explosive outbursts of behavior occur in some children with Tourette's disorder (TD). The etiology of these symptoms is unknown. This study investigated the relationship between explosive outbursts, TD, and its comorbid disorders. METHOD Tic type and severity and the presence of specific comorbid disorders were compared in 37 children with TD and explosive outbursts and 31 children with TD who did not have such symptoms. RESULTS Children with TD and explosive outbursts were more likely to demonstrate significant comorbid conditions, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder. Tic type and severity did not appear related to the presence of explosive outbursts. A highly significant relationship was demonstrated between the number of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses and explosive outbursts. CONCLUSIONS Explosive outbursts in children with TD resemble intermittent explosive disorder and may reflect dysregulation of diverse domains of brain function. The presence of such symptoms should alert the clinician to underlying comorbid conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review and critique the research on the effect of massage therapy and therapeutic touch in children, and to describe clinical implications and make suggestions for future study. DATA SOURCES Studies were obtained through online computer searches of CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychInfo, and SocioFile. Key words used were tactile, kinesthetic, massage therapy, touch, therapeutic touch, infants, and children. STUDY SELECTION, DATA EXTRACTION, AND SYNTHESIS: Fourteen massage therapy studies were selected because they met the following 3 criteria: investigated massage therapy in children; were published in refereed nursing, allied health, or infant and child development journals between 1969 and 1999; and were quantitative in nature. Studies were divided according to developmental age for analysis: neonates, preschool, and older children. Five therapeutic touch studies, 3 quantitative and 2 qualitative, were selected because they were the only empirical reports about the effect of therapeutic touch in children to date. In addition to critiques, the therapeutic touch studies were examined for the following 10 characteristics: study purpose/hypotheses, background/literature review, sample selection method, study design/random assignment, independent variable/length of treatment/control and confounders, dependent variables/measurements, outcomes, study limitations, and implications for future research. CONCLUSIONS More research exists to support the use of massage therapy than therapeutic touch in children. A set of common findings across 2 decades of study suggests that massage therapy may be useful in the care of infants and children. Because massage therapy and therapeutic touch seem to elicit similar parasympathetic effects, therapeutic touch may be useful. There is insufficient evidence, however, to recommend its use in children without qualifications.

Abstract
Physical activity and functional capacity have not been assessed by questionnaire for criterion validity in women. We wished to evaluate the ability of a physical activity and a functional capacity assessment questionnaire to predict functional capacity measured by treadmill exercise stress testing, as well as correlate with cardiac risk factors and angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) in women. In a National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)-sponsored cross-sectional population study involving four academic medical centers, 476 women with cardiac risk factors undergoing coronary angiography for evaluation for suspected myocardial ischemia were enrolled in the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE). The main outcome measures were functional capacity measured during symptom-limited exercise treadmill testing, cardiac risk factors, and CAD, using core laboratory-determined measures. Physical activity measured by the Postmenopausal Estrogen and Progesterone Intervention physical activity questionnaire (PEPI-Q) and functional capacity measured by the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) questionnaire, correlated with functional capacity measured in metabolic equivalents (METS), as estimated during symptom-limited exercise treadmill testing (r = 0.27, p = 0.001 and r = 0.31, p = 0. 0002, respectively). The DASI was a significant independent predictor of functional capacity even after adjustment for cardiac risk factors, and the PEPI-Q was not. The DASI and PEPI-Q scores were inversely associated with higher numbers and levels of cardiac risk factors, as well as angiographic CAD. The DASI questionnaire is a reasonable correlate of functional capacity achieved during symptom-limited treadmill exercise testing in women with suspected myocardial ischemia. Lower functional capacity or physical activity measured by the DASI and PEPI-Q, respectively, is associated with more prevalent cardiac risk factors and angiographic CAD. These findings suggest that the DASI and, to a lesser extent, the PEPI-Q have criterion validity for use in health-related research in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The goal of the preoperative workup in patients with suspected periampullary carcinoma is to establish the diagnosis with a high degree of certainty. In this study we compared endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and computed tomography (CT) scans for the detection of tumor, lymph node metastasis, and vascular invasion in patients with suspected periampullary carcinoma in order to define a role for EUS in the preoperative staging of these patients. METHODS Thirty-seven consecutive patients received EUS and CT scanning followed by operation for presumed periampullary carcinoma during a 30-month period. Both imaging modalities were reviewed in a blinded fashion and the results compared with pathology and operative reports on all patients. RESULTS Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value for tumor detection by EUS were 97%, 33%, 94%, and 50%, respectively, compared with 82%, 66%, 97%, and 25% for CT scan. For lymph nodes the values were 21%, 80%, 57%, and 44%, respectively, for EUS compared with 42%, 73%, 67%, and 50% for CT. For vascular invasion, the values were 20%, 100%, 100%, and 89%, respectively, for EUS, compared with 80%, 87%, 44%, and 96% for CT. CONCLUSIONS CT is the initial study of choice in patients with suspected periampullary tumors. EUS is superior for detecting tumor and for predicting vascular invasion. Therefore, EUS should be used for patients in whom CT does not detect a mass and for those with an identifiable mass on CT in whom vascular invasion cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
Isolates of Cryptosporidium muris and C. serpentis were characterized from different hosts using nucleotide sequence analysis of the rDNA 18S and ITS1 regions, and the heat-shock (HSP-70) gene. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed preliminary evidence that C. muris is not a uniform species. Two distinct genotypes were identified within C. muris; (1) C. muris genotype A; comprising bovine and camel isolates of C. muris from different geographical locations, and (2) C. muris genotype B comprising C. muris isolates from mice, a hamster, a rock hyrax and a camel from the same enclosure. These 2 genotypes may represent separate species but further biological and molecular studies are required for confirmation.

Abstract
We sought to assess the impact of coronary angiography results on use of lipid-lowering agents among women enrolled in the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation [WISE] study. WISE is a multicenter study designed to evaluate new diagnostic modalities among women undergoing angiography for suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). History of atherosclerosis, risk factors for CAD, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol are determined at baseline. The percentage of women at LDL cholesterol goal, use of lipid-lowering agents, and eligibility for lipid-lowering therapy were determined based on National Cholesterol Education Program II guidelines at baseline and 6-week follow-up. Among the 212 women for whom angiographic data were available, 84 had known atherosclerosis, 80 had no history of atherosclerosis but > or =2 risk factors (high risk), and 48 had no history of atherosclerosis and <2 risk factors (low risk). At baseline, LDL cholesterol goals were met in 24% women with atherosclerosis, in 56% high-risk women, and in 88% low-risk women. Angiography revealed previously undiagnosed CAD in 70% of the high-risk and in 42% of the low-risk women. After angiography results were available, 6 women started lipid-lowering therapy and 2 stopped. Based on National Cholesterol Education Program II guidelines, 63 additional women would have been eligible for pharmacologic lipid-lowering therapy. Intensification of lipid-lowering therapy was not apparent 6 weeks after coronary angiography in women with newly diagnosed CAD or among women whose diagnosis was confirmed.

Abstract
PURPOSE A thorough dose-volume analysis of a standard tangential radiation technique has not been published. We evaluated the adequacy of a tangential radiation technique in delivering dose to the breast and regional lymphatics, as well as dose delivered to underlying critical structures. METHODS AND MATERIALS Treatment plans of 25 consecutive women with breast cancer undergoing lumpectomy and adjuvant breast radiotherapy were studied. Patients underwent two-dimensional (2D) treatment planning followed by treatment with standard breast tangents. These 2D plans were reconstructed without modification on our three-dimensional treatment planning system and analyzed with regard to dose-volume parameters. RESULTS Adequate coverage of the breast (defined as 95% of the target receiving at least 95% of the prescribed dose) was achieved in 16 of 25 patients, with all patients having at least 85% of the breast volume treated to 95% of the prescribed dose. Only 1 patient (4%) had adequate coverage of the Level I axilla, and no patient had adequate coverage of the Level II axilla, Level III axilla, or the internal mammary lymph nodes. CONCLUSION Three-dimensional treatment planning is superior in quantification of the dose received by the breast, regional lymphatics, and critical structures. The standard breast tangent technique delivers an adequate dose to the breast but does not therapeutically treat the regional lymph nodes in the majority of patients. If coverage of the axilla or internal mammary lymph nodes is desired, alternate beam arrangements or treatment fields will be necessary.

Abstract
The calcineurin gene was cloned and disrupted in serotype D strains of Cryptococcus neoformans. Serotype A and serotype D calcineurin mutants were inviable at 37 degrees C and avirulent in mice, whereas only serotype A mutants were cation stress sensitive. Thus, calcineurin plays conserved and divergent roles in serotype A and serotype D strains.

Abstract
Experimental gastric ulcers are rapidly colonized by various bacteria, resulting in significantly impaired healing. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is capable of preventing bacterial colonization of the healthy intestinal mucosa. In this study, we examined the possibility that EGF accelerates gastric ulcer healing by reducing bacterial colonization of the ulcer. Gastric ulcers were induced by serosal application of acetic acid. The effect of daily administration of EGF on ulcer healing and bacterial colonization was assessed and compared with the effect of daily treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics. EGF administration reduced colonization levels and accelerated ulcer healing as effectively as the antibiotic treatment. EGF was without effect on acid secretion or neutrophil infiltration into the ulcer. Bacterial growth was not inhibited in the presence of EGF in vitro. These results demonstrate that EGF reduces bacterial colonization during an established infection of a compromised mucosal surface. This effect may contribute to the ability of EGF to accelerate gastric ulcer healing. This effect is acid independent and not due to an anti-inflammatory effect or to direct bactericidal actions.
