A Modified Approach for Harvesting Non Vascularized Fibular Graft for Pediatric Age Group

The conventional technique of harvesting free non-vascularized fibular grafting is associated with different scale of morbidity and usually a long scar. We follow a technique that causes minimum interference to the surrounding soft tissues to harvest the desired length of fibula. This prospective study was performed at Department of Orthopaedics, Dhaka Medical College Hospital from January 2018 to December 2018. Thirty patients of average age 10.5 years (range 8 to 14 years) were taken up for the study. The fibula was harvested by two separate incisions, 1 cm each at proximal and distal extent of proposed length of graft after elevating the periosteum circumferentially using a periosteum elevator. Compression bandage and above knee plaster immobilization was applied that help to reduce hematoma formation. The mean follow up is 12 months. The patients were evaluated clinically and by radiology. Twenty nine patients showed good results. One patient had delayed wound healing resulting in fair result. This modified approach of harvesting fibula reduces donor site morbidity and is safer and easier than conventional approach.

Predicting Difficult Intubation by using Modified Mallampati (MMT) with or without Thyromental Height Test (TMHT)

Failed Tracheal Intubation with Subsequent inability to maintain an open airway and adequate oxygenation is the most frequent cause of brain damage or death during anesthesia. Recognizing before anesthesia the potential for difficult intubation allows time for optimal preparation. Proper Selection of equipment and techniques is needed to avoid unwanted situation. To find out difficulties associated with endotracheal intubation using Modified Mallampati Test (MMT) combined with Thyromental Height Test (TMHT) and MMT without TMHT. This prospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Anesthesia in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from April 2018 to September 2018. Two hundred two patients with different surgical procedures under general anaesthesia in different operation theaters of BSMMU, Dhaka were selected as study population. After taking written consents from each patient or his/her attendant elaborate history of illness, meticulous clinical examinations were performed and relevant laboratory investigations were done. All information was recorded in a preformed data sheet and statistical analysis was done by SPSS-22.0. Mean age ±SD of the study subjects was 42.49±14.29 years in MMT with TMHT group and 43.40±15.39 years in MMT without TMHT group. Females were enrolled more than males in both the groups. BMI was 28.75±3.59kg/m² in MMT with TMHT group and 29.44±8.64kg/m² in MMT without TMHT group. There were no significant differences in age, gender and BMI between the groups. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 100.0%, 96.0%, 96.2%, 100.0% and 98.0% respectively of MMT with TMHT in predicting intubation difficulty. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy were 100.0%, 96.0%, 96.2%, 100.0% and 98.0% respectively of MMT only in predicting intubation difficulty. MMT combined with TMHT is a better predictor of intubation difficulty than MMT alone.

Development of cell culture based peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus vaccine candidate from Bangladeshi isolates

This study was conducted to develop a cell culture based PPR virus vaccine candidate using recent Bangladeshi strain of peste des petits ruminant's (PPR) virus. PPR virus was isolated from field outbreaks, confirmed by RT-PCR and used as viral inoculum for serial passaging in Vero cells for adaptation and attenuation. 60th serial passage had completed and RT-PCR and real time RT-PCR were done in every 5 passages for confirmation of PPR virus in tissue culture fluid (TCF). To assess the adaptation and attenuation cytopathology, virus titration, sequencing of both F and N genes and live animal experimentation were done. Different cellular alterations produced by PPR virus in infected Vero cells including syncytia formation, development of both intranuclear and intra cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and finally cell degradation are the indications of adaptation. The virus titre was found 2.5, 3.31, 3.55, 4.44, 4.71 and 6.5 Log₁₀ TCID₅₀/ml at 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th passages level respectively. In F gene sequence analysis it has been observed that few nucleotide (nt) and mino acid (aa) has been substituted as the effects of serial passaging of PPR virus in Vero cells. TCF at 60th passage level was found effective to produced protective antibody (Ab) titre in live animal experimentation. It is concluded that serially passaged and Vero cells adapted PPR virus TCF could be used as a vaccine candidate for further use to develop a potent & effective vaccine against PPR diseases.

Cleaner pathway for developing bioactive textile materials using natural dyes: a review

Bioactive textile materials are a promising field in the development of functional textiles. The integration of bioactive compounds, such as natural dyes, into textiles offers a range of benefits, including UV protection, anti-microbial properties, and insect repellency. Natural dyes have been shown to have bioactivity, and their integration into textiles has been extensively studied. The application of natural dyes on textile substrates will be an advantage for their inherent functional properties along with their non-toxic and eco-friendly nature. This review addresses the effect of natural dyes on surface modification of most used natural and synthetic fibers and its subsequent effects on their anti-microbial, UV protection and insect repellent properties with natural dyes. Natural dyes have proved to be environmentally friendly in an attempt to improve bioactive functions in textile materials. This review provides a clear view of sustainable resources for the dyeing and finishing of textiles to develop a cleaner pathway of bioactive textiles using natural dyes. Furthermore, the dye source, advantages and disadvantages of natural dye, main dye component, and chemical structure are listed. However, there is still a need for interdisciplinary research to further optimize the integration of natural dyes into textiles and to improve their bioactivity, biocompatibility, and sustainability. The development of bioactive textile materials using natural dyes has the potential to revolutionize the textile industry and to provide a range of benefits to consumers and society.

Rejuvenating multiple true-false: proposing fairer scoring methods

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 pandemic has reached a phase where many have been infected at least once. Healthcare workers were not spared from being infected. This study aimed to determine the period prevalence of COVID-19 among the paediatric healthcare workers in Negeri Sembilan as the country transitioned into an endemic phase of the pandemic. Additionally, we investigate potential sociodemographic and occupational characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare workers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among the healthcare workers in the paediatric department at three public specialist hospitals in Negeri Sembilan between 15 and 21 April 2022. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire.

RESULTS

Out of the 504 eligible healthcare workers, 493 participated in this study (response rate 97.8%). The overall prevalence of COVID-19 (11 March 2020-15 April 2022) among healthcare workers was 50.9%. The majority (80.1%) were infected during the Omicron wave two months before the survey. Household contacts accounted for 35.9% of infection sources. The proportion of non-doctors in the COVID-19-infected group was significantly higher compared to the non-infected group (74.1% vs 64.0%, p=0.016). The COVID-19-infected group had a higher proportion of schoolgoing children (44.6% vs 30.6%, p=0.001) and children who attended pre-school/sent to the babysitter (49.0% vs 24.4%, p<0.001). There were no significant differences between infection rates among the healthcare workers working in the tertiary hospital and the district hospitals. There were also no significant differences in the proportion of COVID-19- infected doctors and nurses when analysed by seniority.

CONCLUSION

Our study provided an estimate on the prevalence of COVID-19 among paediatric healthcare workers in Negeri Sembilan and the factors associated with infection, which captures the extent and magnitude of this pandemic on the state's paediatric department. Most infections resulted from household contact, with a higher proportion of infected healthcare workers having young children.

Effect of Co-culturing both placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells and their condition medium in the cancer cell (HepG2) migration, damage through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest

Human placental-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hPMSCs) are a promising candidate to inhibit the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines such as HepG2. The effects of hPMSCs and their conditioned media on HepG2 are, however, still a mystery. As a result, the goal of this study was to look into the effects of hPMSCs and their conditioned media on HepG2 and figure out what was going on. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting and the MTT test were used to determine the percentage of cells that died (early apoptosis, late apoptosis). The DIO and DID colors were used to detect cell fusion and cell death in both cells. HepG2 cells were co-treated with hPMSCs or hPMSCs-conditioned medium (hPMSCs-CM) to reduce growth and promote apoptosis. Morphological changes were also seen in the 30 percent, 50 percent, and 60 percent cases. The secretion of cytokine was determined by the ELISA. Flow cytometry, caspase 9 immunofluorescence, qPCR (detection of Bax, Bcl-2, and β-catenin genes), western blot, and immunophenotyping revealed that treatment with hPMSCs or hPMSCs-CM caused HepG2 cell death through apoptosis (detection of caspase 9, caspase 3 protein). HepG2 cell cycle arrest could be induced by hPMSCs and hPMSCs-CM. Following treatment with hPMSCs or hPMSCs-CM, HepG2 cell development was stopped in the G0/G1 phase. These treatments also inhibited HepG2 cells from migrating, with the greatest effect when the highest ratio/concentration of hPMSCs (70%) and hPMSCs-CM were used (90%). Our findings indicated that hPMSCs and hPMSCs-CM could be promising treatment options for liver cancer. To elucidate the proper effect, more research on liver cancer-induced rat/mice is needed.

Label free flexible electrochemical DNA biosensor for selective detection of Shigella flexneri in real food samples

An effective tool for early-stage selective detection of the foodborne bacterial pathogen Shigella flexneri (S. flexneri) is essential for diagnosing infectious diseases and controlling outbreaks. Here, a label-free electrochemical DNA biosensor for monitoring S. flexneri is developed. To fabricate the biosensor, detection probe (capture probe) is immobilized on the surface of poly melamine (P-Mel) and poly glutamic acid (PGA), and disuccinimidyl suberate (DSS) functionalized flexible indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid monohydrate sodium salt (AQMS) is used as a signal indicator for the detection of S. flexneri. The proposed DNA biosensor exhibits a wide dynamic range with concentration of the targets ranging from 1 × 10^-6 to 1 × 10^-21 molL^-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 7.4 × 10^-22 molL^-1 in the complementary linear target of S. flexneri, and a detection range of 8 × 10¹⁰-80 cells/ml with a LOD of 10 cells/ml in real S. flexneri sample. The proposed flexible biosensor provides high specificity for the detection of S. flexneri compared to other target signals such as discrete base mismatches and different bacterial species. The developed biosensor displayed excellent recoveries in detecting S. flexneri in spiked food samples. Therefore, the proposed biosensor can serve as a model methodology for the detection of other pathogens in a broad span of industries.

Chitosan-Cu Catalyzed Novel Ferrocenated Spiropyrrolidines: Green Synthesis, Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction, Hirshfeld Surface and Antibacterial Studies

Chitosan-bounded copper (chitosan-Cu) was introduced for green synthesis of novel ferrocenated spiropyrrolidine hybrids, namely 3'-(4-.bromobenzoyl)-5'-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-4'-ferrocenylspiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidin]-2-one and 3'-(4-bromobenzoyl)-4'-ferrocenylspiro[indoline-3,2'-pyrrolidin]-2-one, in good yield. A one-pot three-component 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction was employed for the formation of spiropyrrolidines from 1-(4-bromophenyl)-ferrocene-prop-2-en-1-one and azomethine ylides, which were developed in situ from tyrosine, glycine, and isatin, respectively. Various spectroscopic methods were used to establish the structures of spiropyrrolidines, and a single crystal X-ray diffraction study of a spiropyrrolidine provided additional confirmation. The crystallographic study revealed that compound 3a has one independent molecule in its unit cell, which is correlated with Hirshfeld surface analysis, and describes intramolecular contacts adversely. The highly yielded products in green conditions were determined for their antibacterial significance and were found to have good activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains.

Novel N-doped carbon dots derived from citric acid and urea: fluorescent sensing for determination of metronidazole and cytotoxicity studies

Blue emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots were synthesized using citric acid and urea through the hydrothermal method, and the fluorescence quantum yield was 35.08%. We discovered that N-CDs featured excellent robust fluorescence stability and chemical resistance. For metronidazole detection, our N-CDs exhibited quick response time, high selectivity and sensitivity, and low cytotoxicity. Specifically, our N-CDs could detect metronidazole in the linear range of 0-179 μM, and the LOD was 0.25 μM. Furthermore, metronidazole efficaciously quenches the fluorescence of N-CDs, possibly owing to the inner filter effect. Lastly, we have employed our N-CDs to detect metronidazole in commercial metronidazole tablets with high accuracy. Overall, the newly prepared fluorescence sensor, N-CDs, demonstrated a huge potential to detect metronidazole in a simple, efficient, sensitive, and rapid manner.

Sensitive and Rapid Detection of Aspartic Acid with Co3O4-ZnO Nanorods Using Differential Pulse Voltammetry

Herein, the detection of aspartic acid by doped Co₃O₄-ZnO nanorod materials was proposed using differential pulse voltammetry. The nano-composite metal oxide was synthesized by the wet precipitation method in basic media. Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid naturally synthesized in the body with lot of health significance, including as a biomarker for several health deficiencies. The synthesized composite Co₃O₄-ZnO nanorod was well-investigated by using FESEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, UV/vis., EIS, and CV. The synthesized composite exhibited a low limit of detection (0.03 µM, high sensitivity (0.0014 µA µM^-1 cm^-2) and wide linear range (0.05-50 µM) for aspartic acid. The substrate, the Co₃O₄-ZnO nanorod, enhanced the electro-catalytic oxidation of aspartic acid as a result of its catalytic and conductivity properties. The developed sensor based on Co₃O₄-ZnO has a repeatable, reproducible and stable current response for aspartic acid. Additionally, other electroactive compounds did not interfere with the sensor's current response. The suitability of the developed sensor for real sample analysis was also established. Therefore, this study proposed the potential use of Co₃O₄-ZnO nanorod material in healthcare management for the maintenance of human well-being.

Efficient AcFc-[FeIII (acac)3 ] Redox Couple for Non-aqueous Redox Flow Battery at Low Temperature

The temperature dependency of the electrochemical analysis of acetyl ferrocene (AcFc) and iron(III) acetylacetonate ([Fe(acac)₃ ]) has been investigated for non-aqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs). AcFc and [Fe(acac)₃ ] were utilized as catholyte and anolyte species, respectively, in an electrochemical cell with a cell voltage of 1.41 V and Coulombic efficiencies >99% for up to 50 total cycles at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). Experiments with a rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) indicate that the diffusion coefficient reduces with decreasing temperature from 25 °C to 0 °C, yet the overall storage capacity was higher than that of an aqueous redox flow battery (ARFBs). The electrochemical kinetic rate constant (k₀ ) of AcFc was found to be greater than that of [Fe(acac)₃ ]. However, the value of k₀ was not affected by the variable temperature. ¹ H NMR investigations reveal that temperature change during battery trials did not occur in any structural modification. The obtained result demonstrates the suitability of this battery at low temperatures.

A Comparative Study of Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure between Sedentary and Non-Sedentary Workers

Sedentary lifestyle are spreading worldwide because of lack of available spaces for exercise, increased occupational sedentary behaviors such as office work and the increased prevalence of television and video devices. Increased incidence of sedentary lifestyle and obesity in developed and developing countries is one of the major risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases. This study was undertaken to analyze the differences in anthropometric and cardiovascular parameters in sedentary and non-sedentary male subjects. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2021 to June 2022. This study consisted 50 male employees of 25-60 years who worked in an office were study group (Group II) and control group Group-I) consisted of 50 male age matched physical laborers. BMI was calculated as weight in kilogram divided by the height in meter square i.e. kg/m². Blood Pressure was measured by indirect auscultatory method with an aneroid sphygmomanometer. Statistical analysis was done by using Student's un-paired 't' test. Values expressed as mean ± standard deviation. P value was taken as significant at 5 percent confidence level. The mean±SD BMI in kg/m² of Group I and Group II were 21.90±2.22 and 29.32±3.13 respectively. The mean±SD systolic blood pressure of Group I and Group II were 112.20±6.79 and 145.10±8.11 and mean±SD diastolic blood pressure of Group I and Group II were 72.80±5.73 and 91.00±5.05 respectively. The BMI and blood pressure were increased in sedentary group compared to non-sedentary group. From the study, it appears that the risk for cardiovascular disease is increased in sedentary workers.

Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis- A Rare Cause of Obstructive Jaundice: A Case Report

Diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is often very difficult and may have a suspicion with altered liver functions. PSC is known to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease. This article presents a case study of a 70 years old male patient who presented with obstructive jaundice with recurrent episode of cholangitis in June 2019 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Evaluation revealed beaded appearance in MRCP with positive relevant markers which raised suspicion of PSC and it was confirmed by biopsy and histopathology of the affected segment in biliary tree. The importance of early detection of primary sclerosing cholangitis in an effort to decrease the morbidity and mortality from cholangiocarcinoma will also be emphasized and our management according to local protocol and outcome of this patient.

Impact of textile dyes on health and ecosystem: a review of structure, causes, and potential solutions

The rapid growth of population and industrialization have intensified the problem of water pollution globally. To meet the challenge of industrialization, the use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry, dyeing and printing industry, tannery and paint industry, paper and pulp industry, cosmetic and food industry, dye manufacturing industry, and pharmaceutical industry has increased exponentially. Among these industries, the textile industry is prominent for the water pollution due to the hefty consumption of water and discharge of coloring materials in the effluent. The discharge of this effluent into the aquatic reservoir affects its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. The release of the effluents without any remedial treatment will generate a gigantic peril to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. The ecological-friendly treatment of the dye-containing wastewater to minimize the detrimental effect on human health and the environment is the need of the hour. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the catastrophic effects of textile dyes on human health and the environment. This review provides a comprehensive insight into the dyes and chemicals used in the textile industry, focusing on the typical treatment processes for their removal from industrial wastewaters, including chemical, biological, physical, and hybrid techniques.

Green synthesis of multifunctional MgO@AgO/Ag2O nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and toluidine blue

Introduction: In this paper, MgO@AgO/Ag₂O nanoparticles were greenly synthesized, the current idea is to replace the harmful chemical technique with an ecofriendly synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing biogenic sources. Methods: The current investigation was conducted to create silver oxide NPs decorated by MgO NPs (namely, MgO@AgO/Ag₂O nanocom-posite) using the leaves extract of Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea) as the reducing and capping agent. The nanopowder was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron mi-croscope, BET surface area, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-vis spectrophotom-eter studies. XRD studies reveal the monophasic nature of these highly crystalline silver nano-particles. SEM studies the shape and morphology of the synthesis AgO/Ag₂O and MgO@AgO/Ag₂O NPs. The presence of magnesium and oxygen was further confirmed by EDS profile. Results and discussion: The surface area was found to be 9.1787 m²/g and 7.7166 m²/g, respectively. FTIR analysis showed the presence of specific functional groups. UV-vis spectrophotometer studies show the absorption band at 450 nm due to surface plasmon resonance. The results have also indicated the high performance of the greenly synthesized AgO/Ag₂O NPs and MgO@AgO/Ag₂O NPs for photocatalytic activity dye degradation (methylene blue and toluidine blue).

Synthesis and Characterization of Eco-Friendly Bio-Composite from Fenugreek as a Natural Resource

The present study show the usability of starch (tamarind) based-bio-composite film reinforced by fenugreek by various percentages to replace the traditional petrochemical plastics. The prepared bio-composite films were systematically characterized using the universal testing machine (UTM), soil degradation, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and antibacterial tests. The experiments showed that a lower percentage of fenugreek improves biodegradation and mechanical strength. More than 60% of biodegradation occurred in only 30 days. Almost 3 N/mm² tensile strength and 6.5% tensile strain were obtained. The presence of micropores confirmed by SEM images may accelerate the biodegradation process. Antibacterial activity was observed with two samples of synthesized bio-composite, due to photoactive compounds confirmed by FTIR spectra. The glass transition temperature was shown to be higher than the room temperature, with the help of thermal analysis. The prepared bio-composite containing 5% and 10% fenugreek showed antibacterial activities.

Development of a Toxic Lead Ionic Sensor Using Carboxyl-Functionalized MWCNTs in Real Water Sample Analyses

Functional multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) are of significant interest due to their dispersion ability in the aqueous phase and potential application in environmental, nanotechnology, and biological fields. Herein, we functionalized MWCNTs by a simple acid treatment under ultra-sonification, which represented a terminal or side-functional improvement for the fabrication of a toxic lead ion sensor. The f-MWCNTs were characterized in detail by XRD, Raman, XPS, BET, UV/vis, FTIR, and FESEM-coupled XEDS techniques. The analytical performance of the f-MWCNTs was studied for the selective detection of toxic lead ions by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The selectivity of the f-MWCNTs was evaluated using several metal ions such as Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Cr³⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions. Lastly, the newly designed ionic sensor was successfully employed to selectively detect lead ions in several environmental water samples with reasonable results. This approach introduced a new technique for the selective detection of heavy metal ions using functional carbon nanotubes with ICP-OES for the safety of environmental and healthcare fields on a broad scale.

Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of 4-Nitrophenol with PEDOT:PSS Modified Pt NPs-Embedded PPy-CB@ZnO Nanocomposites

In this study, a selective 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) sensor was developed onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as an electron-sensing substrate, which decorated with sol-gel, prepared Pt nanoparticles- (NPs) embedded polypyrole-carbon black (PPy-CB)/ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) using differential pulse voltammetry. Characterizations of the NCs were performed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD). The GCE modified by conducting coating binders [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate; PEDOT:PSS] based on Pt NPs/PPy-CB/ZnO NCs functioned as the working electrode and showed selectivity toward 4-NP in a phosphate buffer medium at pH 7.0. Our analysis of 4-NP showed the linearity from 1.5 to 40.5 µM, which was identified as the linear detection range (LDR). A current versus concentration plot was formed and showed a regression co-efficient R² of 0.9917, which can be expressed by i_p(µA) = 0.2493C(µM) + 15.694. The 4-NP sensor sensitivity was calculated using the slope of the LDR, considering the surface area of the GCE (0.0316 cm²). The sensitivity was calculated as 7.8892 µAµM^-1cm^-2. The LOD (limit of detection) of the 4-NP was calculated as 1.25 ± 0.06 µM, which was calculated from 3xSD/σ (SD: Standard deviation of blank response; σ: Slope of the calibration curve). Limit of quantification (LOQ) is also calculated as 3.79 µM from LOQ = 10xLOD/3.3. Sensor parameters such as reproducibility, response time, and analyzing stability were outstanding. Therefore, this novel approach can be broadly used to safely fabricate selective 4-NP sensors based on nanoparticle-decorated nanocomposite materials in environmental measurement.

Efficient Detection of 2,6-Dinitrophenol with Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Chitosan/SrSnO3 Nanocomposites by Differential Pulse Voltammetry

Herein, an ultra-sonication technique followed by a photoreduction technique was implemented to prepare silver nanoparticle-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO₃ nanocomposites (Ag-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO₃ NCs), and they were successively used as electron-sensing substrates coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the development of a 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP) efficient electrochemical sensor. The synthesized NCs were characterized in terms of morphology, surface composition, and optical properties using FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and UV-vis analysis. Ag-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO₃ NC/GCE fabricated with the conducting binder (PEDOT:PSS) was found to analyze 2,6-DNP in a wide detection range (LDR) of 1.5~13.5 µM by applying the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) approach. The 2,6-DNP sensor parameters, such as sensitivity (54.032 µA µM^-1 cm^-2), limit of detection (LOD; 0.18 ± 0.01 µM), limit of quantification (LOQ; 0.545 µM) reproducibility, and response time, were found excellent and good results. Additionally, various environmental samples were analyzed and obtained reliable analytical results. Thus, it is the simplest way to develop a sensor probe with newly developed nanocomposite materials for analyzing the carcinogenic contaminants from the environmental effluents by electrochemical approach for the safety of environmental and healthcare fields in a broad scale.

Effect of Full Veneer Crown on Periodontal Health in Diabetic and Non-Diabetic Patients

Both periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus (DM) are important public health issues. Compared to the non-diabetic counterparts, diabetic patients more often suffer from dental problems, sometimes requiring fixed-dental prosthesis. Gingival inflammation and other forms of periodontal disease are the common complications of the dental prosthesis. This prospective comparative experimental study was intended to compare the outcome of the periodontal health after placement of full veneer crown in diabetic and non-diabetic patients in the Department of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh from April 2018 to March 2019. This study involved consecutive 53 diabetic and 53 non-diabetic adult patients of either sex, undergoing treatment with full veneer crown in either maxillary or mandibular posterior teeth with healthy periodontal tissue. The outcome variables were: plaque index, gingival index, periodontal pocket depth, and bleeding on probing, at baseline, 3 months and 6 months post-procedure. Gingival index in the diabetic group reached from 0 at baseline to nearly 0.1 at 3 months which then steeply reached to 0.2 at 6 months interval, whereas the same index in the non-diabetic group reached from 0 at baseline to 0.009 at 3 months and 0.04 at 6 months interval. Plaque index of diabetic patients increased from 0 at baseline to 0.5 at 3- and 6-months interval, whereas the plaque index of non-diabetic patients increased to 0.4 at 3 months and then decreased again 0.3 at 6 months interval (p<0.001). Periodontal pocket depth of diabetic group increased from 1.0mm at baseline to 1.2 and 1.5mm at 3 and 6 months respectively, while the same measure in the non-diabetic group increased to 1.1 and 1.3mm at 3 and 6 months respectively (p<0.001). Bleeding on probing index in the diabetic group reached sharply to 1.5 at 3 months from 0 at baseline and then it reached 2.3 at 6 months, whereas the same index in non-diabetic group reached 1.1 and 1.6 at 3 and 6 months respectively (p<0.001). Periodontal health outcome of full veener crown in diabetic patients is adversely affected compared to that in non-diabetic patients.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing of dopamine from COVID-19 quarantine person

The worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, is not only a great threat to the victim life but it is leaving invisible devastating negative affect on mental health of quarantined individual because of isolation, depression, bereavement, and loss of income. Therefore, the precise monitoring catecholamine neurotransmitters specifically of dopamine (DA) is of great importance to assess the mental health. Thus, herein we have synthesized Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) through solvothermal method for precise monitoring of DA. To facilitate the fast transportation of ions, highly conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene; PEDOT) has been integrated on the surface of ZIF-67 which not only provides the smooth pathway for ions/electrons transportation but also saves the electrode from pulverization. The fabricated ZIF-67/PEDOT electrode shows a significant sensing performance towards DA detection in terms of short diffusion pathways by expositing more active sites, over good linear range (15-240 μM) and a low detection limit of (0.04 μM) even in the coexistence of the potentially interfering molecules. The developed ZIF-67/PEDOT sensor was successfully employed for sensitive and selective monitoring of DA from COVID-19 quarantined person blood, thus suggesting reliability of the developed electrode.

Green Production and Interaction of Carboxylated CNTs/Biogenic ZnO Composite for Antibacterial Activity

Using biomolecule-rich plant extracts, the conversion of metal ions to metal oxide nanoparticles via abiogenic approach is highly intriguing, environmentally friendly, and quick. The inherent inclination of plant extracts function as capping agents in the insitu synthesis. In this study, biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO−NPs) were synthesized using an aqueous leaf extract from Moringaoleifera. The ZnO−NPs were then mixed with carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to create a carboxylated CNTs/biogenic ZnO composite using asol–gel method. The CNTs/ZnO composite displayed 18 mm, 16 mm, and 17 mm zones of inhibition (ZOI) against Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, respectively. In contrast with ZnO−NPs, the produced carboxylated CNTs/ZnO composite demonstrated a 13 percent elevation in ZOI as antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus ATCC 19659, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The characterization of ZnO−NPs and the carboxylated CNTs/ZnO composite were performed via FTIR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, SEM, and XRD. The XRD pattern depicted a nano−sized crystalline structure (Wurtzite) of ZnO−NPs and a carboxylated CNTs/ZnO composite. The current work comprehends a valuable green technique for killing pathogenic bacteria, and gives fresh insights into the manufacture of metal oxide composites for future research.

Fabrication of 3D Gelatin Hydrogel Nanocomposite Impregnated Co-Doped SnO2 Nanomaterial for the Catalytic Reduction of Environmental Pollutants

In the catalytic reduction of various environment pollutants, cobalt-doped tin oxide, i.e., Co-SnO₂ intercalated gelatin (GL) hydrogel nanocomposite was prepared via direct mixing of Co-SnO₂ doped with GL. Then, it was crosslinked internally using formaldehyde within a viscous solution of gelatin polymer, which led to the formation of GL/Co-SnO₂ hydrogel nanocomposite. GL/Co-SnO₂ hydrogel nanocomposite was fully characterized by using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The FESEM images indicate that the Co-SnO₂ composite has a spherical structure on the GL matrix while EDX elucidates the elemental composition of each atom in the crosslinked GL/Co-SnO₂ hydrogel nanocomposite. The GL/Co-SnO₂ nanocomposite was checked for the reduction of various pollutants, including 2-nitro-phenol (2-NP), 2,6-dinitro-phenol (2,6-DNP), 4-nitro-phenol (4-NP), Congo red (CR), and methyl orange (MO) dyes with a strong sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) reducing agent. The GL/Co-SnO₂ nanocomposite synergistically reduced the MO in the presence of the reducing agent with greater reduction rate of 1.036 min⁻¹ compared to other dyes. The reduction condition was optimized by changing various parameters, such as the catalyst amount, dye concentration, and the NaBH₄ amount. Moreover, the GL/Co-SnO₂ nanocomposite catalyst can be easily recovered, is recyclable, and revealed minimal loss of nanomaterials.
