Abstract
Vero cell heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is synthesized as a 20- to 30-kDa membrane-anchored HB-EGF precursor (proHB-EGF). Localization and processing of proHB-EGF, both constitutive and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-inducible, was examined in Vero cells overexpressing recombinant HB-EGF (Vero H cells). Flow cytometry and fluorescence immunostaining demonstrated that Vero cell proHB-EGF is cell surface-associated and localized at the interface of cell to cell contact. Cell surface biotinylation and immunoprecipitation detected a 20- to 30-kDa heterogeneous proHB-EGF species. Vero H cell surface proHB-EGF turned over constitutively with a half-life of 1.5 h. Some of the 20- to 30-kDa cell surface-associated proHB-EGF was processed and a 14-kDa species of bioactive HB-EGF was released slowly, but most of the proHB-EGF was internalized, displaying a diffuse immunofluorescent staining pattern and accumulation of proHB-EGF in endosomes. Addition of TPA induced a rapid processing of proHB-EGF at a Pro148-Val149 site with a half-life of 7min. The TPA effect was abrogated by the protein kinase C inhibitors, staurosporine and H7. Kinetic analysis showed that loss of cell surface proHB-EGF is maximal at 30 min after addition of TPA and that proHB-EGF is resynthesized and the initial cell surface levels are regained within 12-24 h. Loss of cell surface proHB-EGF was concomitant with appearance of 14- and 19-kDa soluble HB-EGF species in conditioned medium. Vero H cell-associated proHB-EGF is a juxtacrine growth factor for EP170.7 cells in coculture. Processing of proHB-EGF resulted in loss of juxtacrine activity and a simultaneous increase in soluble HB-EGF paracrine mitogenic activity. It was concluded that processing regulates HB-EGF bioactivity by converting it from a cell-surface juxtacrine growth factor to a processed, released soluble paracrine growth factor.

Abstract
A 42-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of wheezing and dyspnea that began 20 minutes after accidental exposure to irritant gas containing chromate at a chrome pellet manufacturing plant. The patient had a positive skin reaction to chromite (Cr2O3). Reduction of FEV1.0 was observed 120 minutes after Cr2O3 inhalation challenge. By 150 minutes after Cr2O3 inhalation, FEV1.0 had decreased by 32%. Chest X-ray film revealed no abnormalities. Histological findings of the lung tissue obtained by open lung biopsy revealed bronchospasm and peri-bronchial inflammatory cell infiltration without bronchiolar obstruction, and thus bronchiolitis obliterans was ruled out. This patient fulfilled the criteria of reactive airway dysfunction syndrome (RADS) proposed by Brooks; onset of symptoms very soon after a single exposure to an irritant, persistence of asthmatic symptoms, obstructive pulmonary dysfunction, and the presence of airway hyperreactivity to methacholine. During the initial hospital stay, asthmatic symptoms were relieved by intensive anti-asthmatic treatment including oral and parenteral corticosteroids. However, the patient's asthmatic symptoms have lasted for eight years and necessitate the use of systemic steroids, and regular use of inhaled steroids and bronchodilators. We know of no previous reported case of RADS after chromate exposure.

Abstract
The appearance of peptide-loaded major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules at the cell surface depends critically on the invariant chain (Ii). We have studied the influence of Ii on the positive selection of CD4+ T cells, mediated by class II molecules expressed on thymic stromal cells. Invariant chain-deficient mice (Iio) were crossed with different T cell receptor (TcR) transgenic strains and the emergence of mature CD4 single-positive thymocytes measured in Iio/TcR transgenic offspring. Positive selection was nearly absent in Iio/2B4 mice, which display receptors specific for a moth cytochrome c (MCC) peptide in the context of Ek. In addition, no T cell response was elicited when nontransgenic Iio animals were injected with this peptide, even though antigen-presenting cells (APC) from such mice were perfectly capable of presenting it, suggesting that selection of the entire anti-MCC 88-103 repertoire depends on Ii. Positive selection also appeared strongly reduced in another line of Iio/TcR transgenic mice (Iio/BDC2.5). However, in sharp contrast, a third line (Iio/3A9) exhibited almost normal positive selection of thymocytes displaying the transgene-encoded receptor. These thymocytes were exported to the periphery: peripheral T cells could respond normally to the appropriate peptide in vitro. The most likely interpretation of these findings is that selection of most CD4+ T cells depends on MHC class II complexes loaded with peptide in an Ii-dependent pathway, but some can be selected on class II complexes that are either loaded along an alternative, Ii-independent, route or are empty. This is consistent with the involvement of peptide in positive selection of CD4+ T cells, for which there exists little prior evidence.

Abstract
We compared bolus injection of morphine 51 +/- 9 micrograms.kg-1 (M-S group) with 48 h-continuous infusion of bupivacaine and fentanyl mixture (BF-C group) for postoperative epidural analgesia in 100 patients who had undergone upper abdominal laparotomy. The epidural analgesia was started about 60 min before completion of surgery. The mixed solution, consisting of bupivacaine 48 ml (240 mg), fentanyl 24 ml (1.2 mg) and 0.9% saline (24 ml), was administered at a rate of 2 ml.h-1 by using a 100 ml balloon infuser. Analgesic effects (determined by visual analogue scale, verbal pain scores at rest and with movement, additional requests of other analgesics), comfort and side effects of the epidural analgesia were examined. The evaluation based on postoperative analgesia and comfortable feeling rated higher in the BF-C group compared with the M-S group (P < 0.01 to of 0.05). There were fewer requests for other postoperative analgesics in the BF-C group (P < 0.01 to 0.05). There was no significant difference in side effects between the two groups. The plasma fentanyl concentration in the BF-C group (n = 5) was maintained almost constant for the period from 24 to 49 hours after the start of infusion and was approximately 1.6 ng.ml-1. We conclude that continuous infusion of bupivacaine (2.5 mg.ml-1) and fentanyl (12.5 micrograms.ml-1) at a rate of 2 ml.h-1 is superior to bolus injection of morphine for postoperative analgesia.

Abstract
The patient was a 66-year-old man. An abnormal mass on his chest X-ray was pointed out during a regular check-up in November 1991. He was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of productive cough in January 1992. With the diagnosis of lung cancer, right middle and lower lobectomy with lymph node resection and partial resection of the pericardium was carried out. The pathological examination revealed pulmonary plasma cell granuloma infiltrating the pericardium. Postoperative course was uneventful. No recurrence was seen 17 months after operation. As pulmonary plasma cell granuloma is histologically benign, this was a very rare case with extra-pulmonary extension. Up to present, only 8 cases including this case has been reported in the literature. We reviewed these 8 cases.

Abstract
The case of a chronic alcoholic patient with Wernicke's encephalopathy accompanied by passing blindness is reported and the alcoholic amblyopia is discussed in this study. The patient was a 39 year-old male who had been a heavy drinker for 13 years, and was habitually inebriated for the last one year. Disturbance of consciousness ataxia of gait, nystagmus and blindness were manifested on admission. Decreased level of serum vitamin B1 was also recognized at admission. The symptoms diminished from about a month after admission except for horizontal nystagmus. Since the patient had racket-like scotoma in his central visual field, his blindness was thought to be alcoholic amblyopia. Although alcohol dependence is associated with many physical disabilities, there are few reports about Wernicke's encephalopathy with alcoholic amblyopia. This case demonstrates the importance of careful physical examination for understanding alcohol-related disabilities and alcohol dependence.

Abstract
Before operation, we evaluated the usefulness of ultrasonically guided needle biopsy to detect histologically invasion of the chest wall by tumor in patients with lung cancer. Ultrasonically guided needle biopsy, computed tomography, and ultrasonography were done in 29 patients with lung cancer. In all of them, chest wall invasion was histologically confirmed by thoracotomy. As for the diagnosis of chest wall invasion, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ultrasonically guided needle biopsy diagnosis were 61.5%, 100%, and 82.8%, respectively; for diagnosis by computed tomographic scan these figures were 69.2%, 75.0%, and 72.4%, respectively; and for diagnosis by ultrasonography they were 76.9%, 68.8%, and 72.4%, respectively. We had no false-positive cases in the ultrasonically guided needle biopsy assessment and no fatal complications or implantation metastases. Our results indicate that ultrasonically guided needle biopsy is safe and useful for preoperative histologic diagnosis of chest wall invasion in cases in which combined chest wall resection is being considered in patients with lung cancer.

Abstract
Using an ultrasonic probe inserted into the mediastinum during cervical mediastinoscopy, mediastinal ultrasonography (USM) was performed on 63 patients with lung cancer. The patients with a small peripheral mass of less than 2 cm in diameter, according to the chest X-ray results, and with mediastinal lymph nodes smaller than 1 cm in their short axes as determined by computed tomography (CT), were excluded from this study. An analysis of the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves derived from CT and USM showed that USM was superior (P = 0.043) to CT in terms of the diagnosis for mediastinal lymph node metastases, when the short axis dimension of mediastinal lymph nodes was employed for the diagnosis of metastases. The reason for this is that 97% of the mediastinal lymph nodes imaged by USM were located vertically along the body axis of the patient, and hence USM imaged the true short axis of the node in many cases. Our results indicate that USM is useful for performing a safe biopsy of lymph nodes during mediastinoscopy as well as for obtaining a clear imaging of the subcarinal nodes, which are inaccessible by normal cervical mediastinoscopy.

Abstract
We studied the outcomes of 116 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosed in our hospital between January 1980 and August 1992. The patients were divided into groups according to the principal treatment procedure. The 3-year survival rates in the patients treated by percutaneous ultrasonically guided ethanol injection (PEI), operation (hepatic resection), and transcatheter hepatic arterial embolization (TAE) were 90.9%, 53.6%, and 29.0%, respectively. None of the patients treated by one-shot injection of an anticancer agent into the hepatic artery and chemotherapy survived for more than 2 years. The outcomes of the patients treated by PEI and hepatic resection were significantly better than those of the patients treated by the other procedures. There was no significant difference when the patients were stratified according to the year of detection. The 3-year survival rate was 57.3% for 19 patients in whom HCCs were detected during clinical follow-up for chronic liver disease and 17.3% for the other 97 patients. We concluded that hepatic resection in patients with good liver function and PEI for early HCC yielded significantly better survival rates than the other procedures. Moreover, for early detection and treatment of HCC, we recommend clinical follow-up of patients with chronic liver disease.

Abstract
We studied the possibility that during incremental exercise anaerobic threshold (AT) is associated with an increase in breathlessness in subjects with increased impedance or respiratory system. Six patients with chronic lung diseases (CLD) and six healthy subjects performed cycle ergometer exercise under two conditions; with free resistive loading and with 9 cmH2O/l/sec of inspiratory resistive loading (IRL). Ventilation, respiratory pattern, VO2, VCO2, were measured every 15 sec by a metabolic cart, Minato Respiromonitor RM 300. AT was determined by V-slope method. Mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1) was also measured in six subjects during exercise. The subjects selected a number of modified Borg scale (psi) to express their breathlessness during exercise by pushing a electrically potentiated remote button. Slopes of changes in psi with increasing work-load, delta psi/delta watt-slope, were calculated before and after V-slope AT, and each inflection point of VE, respiratory rate, VT/Ti, and VCO2. In order to evaluate which parameters are the most responsible for a change in psi, statistical significance (P-value) in changes of slope of each parameters were compared. The delta psi-slope increased with the highest significance after AT point. Under IRL the significance was more pronounced. There was a highly significant linear correlation between P0.1 and psi during exercise both under free resistive loading and IRL. In addition the increase of P0.1 with incremental exercise was characterized by a presence of inflection at a workload of V-slope AT in most of the subjects. From these results it was concluded that anaerobic threshold was closely associated with an increase of breathlessness during exercise via enhancing respiratory motor command.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
In order to unify interlaboratory clinical enzyme data, a reference method and reference material are necessary for each enzyme. Although reference methods recommended by various societies of clinical chemistry including JSCC are now available for some routinely measured clinical enzymes, the availability of secondary enzyme references or calibrators, limits the practical application of standardization concept for minimizing present interlaboratory variation of enzyme data. Since control sera prepared by adding enzymes from human cell cultures to a pool of human serum may meet the requirements as candidates for such reference materials, we attempted to assign values to 6 enzymes present in the materials by mainly the IFCC reference methods following the procedures as strictly as possible and yet with modifications where necessary. This paper describes each step of the value assignment for accuracy control purposes.

Abstract
Five islet-reactive T cell clones were established from islet-infiltrating T cells of non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. All clones expressed CD4, but not CD8, and responded to islet cells from various strains of mice in the context of I-ANOD. They could induce insulitis when transferred into disease-resistant I-E+ transgenic NOD mice. The T cell receptor (TCR) sequences utilized by the clones were determined. Their usage of TCR V and J segments was not restricted but was rather diverse. One of the clones utilized V beta 16. The expression of V beta 16 was significantly reduced in I-E+ transgenic NOD, suggesting the possibility that the islet-reactive T cell clone expressing V beta 16 may be deleted or inactivated by I-E molecules. This clone might be one of the candidates that triggers insulitis.

Abstract
We searched for a new cell aggregation factor for hepatoma AH109A cells, and found one we called HAF in the culture filtrate of Streptomyces sp. strain No. A-6143 isolated from a soil sample. HAF was purified by salting-out with ammonium sulfate. DEAE-cellulose column chromatography, gel filtration on Sephadex G-100, and hydroxylapatite column chromatography, HAF was glycoprotein which had a molecular weight of about 73,000. HAF was stable from pH 6 to 8 at 37 degrees C and up to 40 degrees C at pH 8.0 and the aggregation activity of HAF was maximum around pH 8 at 30 degrees C. The activity was not influenced by some saccharides, but it was inhibited by EDTA and EGTA: moreover HAF activity was restored by the addition of calcium ions. HAF aggregated hepatoma AH136B and COS-7 cells as well as hepatoma AH109A cells, but it was inert to other cancer cells and human erythrocytes. These properties proved that HAF is completely different from other aggregation factors for cancer cells so far reported.

Abstract
A 64-year-old lung cancer patient combined with angina pectoris was admitted to our hospital. Chest roentgenogram showed a coin lesion in the left upper lobe. Broncho-fiberscopic examination proved adenocarcinoma. Coronary angiography revealed 90% stenosis of the left circumflex artery. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was done and resulted in success. Eight days after PTCA, left upper lobectomy for lung cancer was undergone. Postoperative course was uneventful. Compared with coronary artery bypass grafting, PTCA was very useful for the patient having malignant disease combined with angina pectoris because of little surgical stress and no delay of operation.

Abstract
We evaluated the sensitivity of CT for detecting mediastinal lymph node metastases in patients with nonsmall cell bronchogenic carcinoma. Computed tomography of 208 cases of surgically proven bronchogenic carcinoma from three institutes was evaluated retrospectively using specific diagnostic criteria. These consisted of two size thresholds for specific mediastinal node regions: 13 mm short transverse diameter for nodes in the subcarinal, precarinal, and tracheobronchial regions and 10 mm for other regions. Based on these criteria, the overall sensitivity of CT was 69%, specificity 94%, and accuracy 86% for detection of metastasis. In cases of adenocarcinoma, sensitivity was 61%, specificity 93%, and accuracy 81%, and in those of squamous cell carcinoma the respective values were 86, 94, and 92%. Comparison between the results using the present criteria with the former criterion of 10 mm short transverse diameter for all mediastinal nodes revealed that the number of false-positive cases decreased markedly. We conclude that more accurate CT evaluation of mediastinal lymph node metastasis in nonsmall cell bronchogenic carcinoma can be achieved with specific size criteria for specific mediastinal regions.

Abstract
A randomized study with and without bestatin, a new biological response modifier, was conducted in order to evaluate its survival effect on resected lung cancer. A total of 153 patients (72 with squamous cell carcinoma, 66 with adenocarcinoma, and 15 with other types of cancer) were evaluated. Among the patients with squamous cell carcinoma, the bestatin-treated group had significantly prolonged survival compared to the control group. No significant difference between the two groups was seen in adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
mAb and polyclonal antibodies against human IL-6R were prepared by using a murine transfectant cell line expressing the human IL-6R and a synthetic oligopeptide made on the basis of the deduced amino acid sequence as immunogens. Immunoprecipitation of radiolabeled IL-6R with these antibodies showed that the Mr of a mature IL-6R was 80 kDa and its value was reduced to 50K after treatment with O- and N-glycanase and neuraminidase, indicating that IL-6R is a glycoprotein. Two mAb recognizing different epitopes were prepared. One, PM1 inhibited the binding of 125I-IL-6 to the receptor and blocked the IL-6-dependent growth of a T lymphoma line, KT3. PM1 could not bind to IL-6R when it was saturated with IL-6, indicating that this antibody recognizes the IL-6 binding or the adjacent site on IL-6R. The other, MT18 was not inhibited by IL-6 for its recognition of IL-6R, therefore, this could be used for cytofluorometric staining of normal cells. Nonstimulated B cells expressed undetectable amount of IL-6R regardless of the expression of surface IgD. However, after the stimulation with PWM, IL-6R was observed on IgD- B cells with a relatively large size, but subtly on IgD- small B cells and not on IgD+ B cells, fitting the function of IL-6 which acts on activated B cells to induce Ig production. In contrast, IL-6R was detected on non-stimulated CD4+/CD8- and CD4-/CD8+ T cells. The level of IL-6R on both T cell subpopulations was not significantly changed after stimulation with phytohemagglutinin.

Abstract
Recently, eosinophils have been implicated as inflammatory effector cells in allergic and inflammatory reactions such as bronchial asthma. In this study eosinophil-mediated and eosinophilic cell line-mediated natural cytotoxicity against bronchial epithelial cells and the effects of oxatomide, an anti-allergic agent, on their cytotoxicity were investigated. Treatment with oxatomide diminished both eosinophil-mediated and eosinophilic cell line-mediated natural cytotoxicity in vitro. We concluded from these results that oxatomide not only has anti-allergic activity but also anti-inflammatory properties for eosinophils. In addition this method for isolating eosinophils seems to well serve the purpose of evaluating eosinophil function as in this investigation, as we have reported previously.

Abstract
Interleukin 6 (IL-6) has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of polyclonal and monoclonal plasma cell abnormalities. To address this possibility, transgenic mice carrying the human IL-6 genomic gene fused with a human immunoglobulin heavy chain enhancer were generated. High concentrations of human IL-6 and polyclonal increase in IgG1 (120- to 400-fold) in sera of all transgenic mice were observed. A massive plasmacytosis in thymus, lymph node, and spleen and an infiltration of plasma cells in lung, liver, and kidney were observed. However, the plasma cells were not transplantable to syngeneic mice and were found not to contain chromosomal aberrations including c-myc gene rearrangements. The evidence indicates that deregulated gene expression of IL-6 can trigger polyclonal plasmacytosis but cannot induce plasmacytoma. It is suggested that additional genetic changes may be required for the generation of plasma cell neoplasia. Other interesting findings in these transgenic mice were the development of mesangio-proliferative glomerulonephritis and an increase in megakaryocytes in bone marrow.

Abstract
In this study, IgE-Fc receptor expressions on each type of BAL cells (lymphocytes, macrophages and eosinophils) in a patients with eosinophilic pneumonia accompanied by bronchial asthma were examined by indirect immunofluorescent method using monoclonal antibody (H107). BAL cell findings showed marked increases of total BAL cell counts and eosinophils, an increased number of lymphocytes and the presence of basophilic cells. These results match those of our previous report. Furthermore, IgE-Fc receptor expressions on lymphocytes, macrophages and eosinophils were markedly increased as compared to those in the peripheral blood and normal control subjects. These findings suggest that IgE production in the lung plays the main role in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic pneumonia and bronchial asthma. On the other hand, during ketotifen administration, decreases of peripheral blood eosinophilia, of eosinophilia in the sputum and of serum IgE level and an improvement in chest X-ray findings were observed. Furthermore not only normalization of total BAL cell counts but also decreases of IgE-Fc receptor expressions on BAL cells were observed.

Abstract
The need of lymph node dissection in the case of operative lung cancer with negative mediastinoscopy was discussed. As a preliminary study, the N-number obtained from the mediastinoscopy and that of postoperative examination was compared. The rate of agreement of N-number was as high as 96%. Secondary, 183 cases of lung cancer with squamous-or adenocarcinoma pathologically T-1 or 2. N-0 and P-0 or 1 were picked up and examined. In those cases, the result of 3 years survival rate was 80% in the cases of absolute curative operation and 60% in that of relative non-curative cases, and 5 years survival rate was 70% and 52% respectively, and the cases of absolute curative operation was statistically excellent than that of another group. However, the background of the two groups was different to some degree on account of the advancement of the cancer and the age of the patients. Therefore, the randomized study as for the lymph node dissection in the cases of negative mediastinoscopy was finally performed. In the 30 cases of squamous cell carcinoma where dissection was carried out in 13 cases and not done in 17 cases, the result of 3 years survival was 84% (dissecting group) and 89% (non-dissecting group), and 5 years survival was 73% and 63% respectively. In 23 cases of adenocarcinoma (13; dissecting, 10; non-dissecting), the result of 3 years survival was 100%, 63% and that of 5 years survival rate was 100%, 63% respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A single oral dose of fusarenon-X (F-X), a trichothecene mycotoxin, resulted in abnormal microflora in the jejunum in ICR mice and Wistar rats with some differences in dose response between the species. In the acute phase, enterobacteria, streptococci, Clostridium perfringens and bacteroides showed remarkably increased counts in the jejunum of mice and rats dosed with F-X while lactobacilli showed a decrease in count. F-X brought an invasion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa into the livers, lungs, kidneys and spleens of ICR mice. Changes in the jejunal microflora appeared after 7 h in ICR mice and after 24 h in Wistar rats after a single oral dose of F-X of 7.5 and 4.0 mg/kg b.w., respectively, and the microflora returned to its normal state at 72 h in mice and 96 h in rats. The changes of intestinal microflora were followed by alterations in the growth curves of both animal species. The pH in the glandular stomach was also greatly enhanced before changes in the jejunal microflora. Acute F-X intoxication may be an involved manifestation of essential cytotoxicity of F-X mycotoxin alone and secondary bacterial overgrowth in the bowel.

Abstract
Laminectomy was performed on 14 patients with cervical radiculomyelopathy and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). Since 1978, simple open-door laminoplasties have been performed on 75 patients. A retrospective study was done to determine if there was any difference between the results of laminectomy and laminoplasty. Overall results of laminectomy were as follows: The preoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score was 7.0 points and the postoperative score was 15.0 points. Overall results of laminoplasty were as follows: the preoperative JOA score was 7.0 points and the postoperative score was 15.0 points. The percentage improvement in laminectomy was 81.1%, and in laminoplasty was 81.4%. There was no significant difference in the results of these two procedures for the treatment of patients with cervical radiculomyelopathy and OPLL.

Abstract
Immature (L3T4-/Lyt-2- "double-negative") thymocytes were separated into several functionally distinct fractions based on their expression of IL2 receptors, Thy-1 and CD3. The majority (60-70%) of double-negative thymocytes in young adult mice lack detectable IL2 receptor expression, have high levels of Thy-1 and rapidly "progress" to a L3T4+ or L3T4+/Lyt-2+ stage when cultured for 20 h in simple medium. In contrast, the IL2 receptor-positive fraction retains the double-negative phenotype for as long as it survives in culture and addition of IL2 has little or no effect on such cells. IL2 does generate strong proliferation from a fraction of cells expressing low levels of Thy-1, but not detectable IL2 receptors. Such culture generates an unusual population of double-negative cells that expresses the pan-B cell molecule B220 and which kill both the NK target cell line YAC-1 and the NK-resistant line EL4. This Thy-1-low fraction includes all of the double-negative thymocytes capable of T cell reconstitution. Thy-1-low fraction could be further separated into two populations with regards to CD3 expression. CD3- but not CD3+ population could reconstitute mature T cells, indicating that Thy-1-low, IL2R- and CD3- cells are the most enriched population of intrathymic T cell progenitors.

Abstract
The partial amino acid sequence of the NH2 terminus of a factor named human B-cell differentiation factor or B-cell stimulatory factor 2 (BSF-2) has been determined. Antibodies raised against the synthetic peptide corresponding to residues 1-13 of the NH2-terminal sequence specifically react with BSF-2 generated by a T-cell line and by phytohemagglutinin-stimulated normal T cells. Furthermore, the antipeptide antibodies react with a BSF-2-like factor produced by cardiac myxoma as well as uterine cervical carcinoma cells. The results show that BSF-2 functions in vivo as well and suggest that the constitutive production of BSF-2 may be involved in autoantibody production, since patients with cardiac myxoma and uterine carcinoma showed autoantibody production.

Abstract
Changes in the serum zinc content of patients with gastric cancer were investigated in connection with the size of the primary lesion, the depth of invasion into the gastric wall, the presence or absence of liver metastasis and the histological types. The serum zinc content of the patients decreased along with the progress of the cancer. The changes in serum zinc were closely related to the extent and severity of the disease, but were independent of the presence of liver metastasis and of the histological types in patients with gastric cancer. As a cause of decreasing serum zinc in cancer patients, a decrease of serum albumin was emphasized. The relationship between the decrease of serum zinc and accumulation of zinc in the tumor tissue in patients with gastric cancer could not be elucidated.

Abstract
Abstract
Human peripheral T cells were transformed by human T cell leukemia virus (HTLV), and T cell lines producing BGDF (BCGF II) and BCDF were established. Among these cell lines, a cell line, TCL-Na1, secreted the highest level of both BGDF and BCDF, and the amount of BCDF secreted by TCL-Na1 cells was 900-fold more than that produced by PHA-stimulated T cells. Within the limits of our examination, none of the HTLV-transformed T cell lines produced IL 2 or BSF-p1 (BCGF I). BCDF produced by TCL-Na1 cells had a m.w. of 35,000 and a pI value of 5.5, being separated from BGDF, which was eluted in the fractions corresponding to m.w. of more than 60,000 and pI values of 5 to 6. BGDF induced both proliferation and IgM secretion in a mouse leukemic B cell line, BCL1, and these activities were not separated by either isoelectric focusing or gel filtration in the presence or absence of 0.1% Triton X-100, suggesting that the molecule designated BGDF exerted both growth and differentiation activities. BGDF acted on normal mouse B cells to induce proliferation as well as IgM secretion. The target cells of BGDF were in vivo activated B blast cells. BGDF acted on DXS-activated murine B cells to induce both proliferation and IgM secretion but not anti-Ig-activated B cells, indicating that BGDF and BSF-p1 were different molecules.

Abstract
The clinical effectiveness, safety and usefulness of KN-7 tablet as a new oral application of the prostatic extract, on urinary dysfunction of neurogenic bladder were compared with those of Robaveron injection by the double-blind test method. In the study, 2 tablets t.i.d. and a shot of intramuscular injection 1 ml a day were given successively for 3 weeks. A total of 233 cases were reported from 37 facilities belonging to the KN-7 Clinical Research Group. Some of them were excluded or dropped out. The number of cases used for analysing the effectiveness, safety and usefulness were 214, 232 and 215, respectively. There was no bias between the two groups with a significant homogeneity in the background. In the overall clinical effectiveness, the effective rate including excellent, moderate and slightly effective was 76.9% with KN-7 and 77.4% with Robaveron. In the clinical usefulness, the rate of usefulness of slightly useful or above was 75.0% with KN-7 and 75.7% with Robaveron. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the clinical effective and useful rates at a significant level of 5%. Side effects were observed in 1 of the 114 (0.9%) patients given KN-7 and 8 of the 118 (6.8%) patients given Robaveron. The incidence of adverse reactions with KN-7 was significantly lower than that with Robaveron. Based on the results, it was concluded that KN-7 tablets, 2 tablets t.i.d., would be as effective and useful as a Robaveron injection 1 ml daily and safer than the latter in the treatment of neurogenic bladder.

Abstract
Robert Graves is a poet-mythographer, well-known in the U. K. and the U. S. A., but not in Japan despite his huge amount of poetic, mythographical, prose and critical works. Furthermore, even in the U. S. A. and the U. K., some people have been shunning him politely as a versatile iconoclast possessed of the White Goddess. In fact, it is not difficult to imagine that when King Jesus, a life story of Christ, was published, people were shocked at his extraordinary mythographical Christology derived from his enthusiasm towards the White Goddess Cult. In Christ he discovered the fragments of maternal doctrine as a new concept in opposition to the Apollonian theory of Judaism, but they seemed to be quite incomplete in the author's eyes lacking in something most essential in life, recognition of love and hatred discipline. This paper is an inquiry into how the author developed his own hermaneutics of Christ through his wide and thorough scholarship on mythology, history, the Bible and Celtic poetry.

Abstract
For the remission induction therapy of advanced gastric and rectal cancer, 25 cases were treated by non-radical irradiation (total doses: 3000-6000 rad) combined with tegafur, which minimized the tumor mass. For the reduction of tumor mass, a modified method of FAMT was employed and for the maintenance therapy of long-term chemotherapy a modified method of FAMT, MFE, MF or tegarfur alone were performed. Prolongation in survival was obtained with this combination therapy: Of 25 cases, 11 cases survived longer than one year and 6 cases longer then two years. One case of survived rectal cancer obtained disease-free for about 8 years with this treatment. But the observation period was too short to calculate one-year and two-year survival rates of all cases. The indications for application of this combination therapy were as follows; (1) Locally operable cases with myocardial infarct, heart insufficiency, poor risk or refusal of operation, (2) Very aged patients, (3) Locally inoperable cases without clinical metastasis, and (4) Primary lesion of gastric cancer with small metastasis controllable by tegafur. It was concluded that over 3000 rad of irradiation combined with tegafur was necessary to obtain the sufficient radiation effect. As for side effects, loss of appetite , leukopenia and a few case of gastric bleeding by radiation were noted. From the result this treatment modality appears to be valuable in the management of gastric and rectal cancer.

Abstract
Fifty-eight patients were treated with cefotaxime (CTX, Claforan) intravenously. Almost all patients (54 patients) had underlying diseases that were 16 cases of diabetes mellitus, 10 cases of respiratory diseases, 8 cases of cerebral vascular disturbance, 6 cases of renal diseases and blood diseases, 5 cases of carcinoma and hypertension, 4 cases of cholelithiasis, 3 cases of heart diseases and 7 cases of other diseases. The clinical efficacy of CTX in 34 cases of RTI, 11 cases of UTI, 8 cases of BTI and 5 cases of other infection was excellent in 11 cases, good in 27 cases, fair in 12 cases, poor in 4 cases and unclear in 4 cases. The over all clinical effectiveness was 70.4%. No adverse reaction was observed except for 2 cases (general fatigue in 1 case and eruption and itching in another). These results obtained should support the usefulness of CTX.

Abstract
The cell-wall composition of carrot (Daucus carota L.) cells has been studied during their growth in suspension culture. Pectic and hemicellulosic polymers were fractionated according to molecular size by a Sepharose 4B column. Polyuronides in the pectic fraction were resolved into high- and low-molecular-weight components. The low-molecular-weight polyuronides were relatively free of neutral sugars and showed a marked increase during the growth of the cell wall. Hemicellulosic polysaccharides were of disperse molecular size. As cell expansion proceeded, the contents of glucose and xylose in the high-molecular-weight region increased while those in the low-molecular-weight fraction decreased. Removal of auxin from the medium apparently caused degradation of high-molecular-weight polymers in both the pectic and hemicellulosic fractions.
