Effects of noise on pure-tone thresholds in blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus and Molothrus ater) and pigeons (Columba livia)

Blackbirds and pigeons were trained to detect tones in quiet and in broadband noise by using positive-reinforcement techniques. In Experiment 1, thresholds in noise were obtained in blackbirds as a function of both tone frequency and noise intensity for a pulsed noise masker (noise gated on and off with tone). For blackbirds, critical ratios (the ratio of the power of the just-detectable tone in noise to the power of the noise masker) obtained in pulsed noise showed no consistent relation to tone frequency. For pigeons, on the other hand, critical ratios obtained in continuous noise increased by about 3 dB/octave across their range of hearing, being similar to known critical ratio functions for cats and humans. In Experiment 2, critical ratios in blackbirds obtained with both continuous noise and pulsed noise were compared. Blackbird critical ratios were more stable in continuous noise and averaged 4 dB lower than critical ratios in pulsed noise. The blackbird critical ratio function obtained with continuous noise was similar to the known critical ratio function of another avian species, the parakeet. Thus, small birds appear to have atypical critical ratio functions, compared with pigeons and other vertebrates.

Unit study of monkey frontal cortex: active localization of auditory and of visual stimuli

The influence of sound localization behavior on unit activity in the frontal cortex of awake rhesus monkeys was examined by comparing responses under three behavioral conditions: auditory localization, during which a response was required to the location of a sound (broad-band noise) source; auditory detect, during which a response was required to indicate the occurrence of the sound regardless of location; visual localization, during which no sounds were presented and a response was required to the location of a visual stimulus; and nonperform, presentation of auditory stimuli as in the first two conditions, but with the animal sitting passively. Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made in the periarcuate region and dorsal and ventral prefrontal areas near the principal sulcus. Four monkeys were used with a total of 498 cells studied. Of the total population, only five cells were found to have characteristics similar to those of auditory units in the primary auditory cortex and the surrounding belt area. More typically, units were found that had strong short-latency responses specific to the auditory and/or visual localization tasks. These units had no or weak responses when the same sound stimuli were presented in the auditory detect task or when a monkey received the sound stimuli in a nonperforming condition. Two regions were identified, one medial and/or posterior to the arcuate sulcus, in Brodmann's area 6; the second included parts of areas 8 and 9 within the genu of the arcuate sulcus. Units from these regions are referred to, respectively, as the postarcuate and the prearcuate populations. Both populations responded predominantly during active localization behavior. Sixty-two percent of the postarcuate population responded during auditory localization, 32% responded during auditory detect, and only 18% responded to acoustic stimuli presented in the nonperforming condition. In the prearcuate population percentages in these three conditions were 35, 25, and 12%, respectively. For visual localization, 54% in the postarcuate population responded, whereas 42% in the prearcuate responded. Spatial tuning of units during auditory localization was similar to that seen in units of the primary auditory cortex, with the greatest percentages of units responding to stimuli contralateral to the recording site. Similar tuning was observed for the visual localization task as well. Similarities in spatial tuning between the auditory and visual localization conditions were examined to assess the "bimodal" nature of the units.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The effects of phencyclidine and ketamine on sensory thresholds and reaction times in the baboon

Adult male baboons were trained on a reaction time procedure, and absolute thresholds and reaction times to both a 16.0 kHz pure tone and a white light were obtained. Acute IM injections of phencyclidine (0.0032 to 0.1 mg/kg) or ketamine (0.032 to 3.2 mg/kg) were given at the beginning of 2-hr test sessions. Phencyclidine had no effect on auditory thresholds, visual thresholds, or visual reaction times, but selectively elevated auditory reaction times. Ketamine, on the other hand, elevated auditory thresholds and both auditory and visual reaction times, while having no effect on visual thresholds. Ketamine was also less potent than phencyclidine in elevating auditory reaction times, and recovery from these impairments was evident during the two-hour test sessions for ketamine, but not for phencyclidine.

Effects of diazepam and triazolam on auditory and visual thresholds and reaction times in the baboon

Adult male baboons were trained on a psychophysical procedure that measured detection thresholds and reaction times for pure tone and white light stimuli. Intramuscular injections of diazepam or triazolam were given 30 min before session onset; stimulus intensity was randomly varied from trial to trial, and four to five estimates of sensory thresholds and reaction times were obtained throughout each session. Diazepam produced dose-related elevations of both auditory and visual thresholds and reaction times. Effects of a single high dose of diazepam were apparent 4-5 days after administration. Triazolam was approximately 100 times more potent than diazepam in elevating reaction times and visual thresholds, but did not elevate auditory thresholds. There were no residual effects of triazolam on the day after dosing. These results suggest that diazepam and triazolam produce qualitatively similar effects on basic psychophysical function, but that they can be differentiated on the basis of sensory modality changes and post-drug recovery time.

Effects of d-methamphetamine on auditory and visual reaction times and detection thresholds in the baboon

Baboons were trained in both auditory and visual reaction time procedures to release a response lever in the presence of low-intensity stimuli. By varying the stimulus intensity from trial to trial, functions relating reaction time (elapsed time from stimulus onset to lever release) to stimulus intensity were established, and detection thresholds were measured. The effects of acute, IM injections of d-methamphetamine (0.001-1.0 mg/kg) were examined on these psychophysical performance baselines. Reaction times for acoustic stimuli generally were faster for higher drug doses, whereas reaction times for visual stimuli either lengthened or shortened, depending on both drug dose and individual differences among animals. Auditory thresholds were unaffected at all drug doses studied, whereas visual thresholds were generally elevated at doses of 0.1 mg/kg and above.

Novel long-term cardiovascular effects of industrial noise

Baboon subjects were instrumented with indwelling arterial catheters for continuous measurement of blood pressure and heart rate before, during, and after exposure to industrial noise eight hours daily. Initial exposure to noise produced transient, acute elevations of systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rates at noise onset, which habituated over the course of noise exposure. Chronic exposure to noise lowered blood pressure and heart rate not only during noise, but particularly after daily noise offset. Blood pressures returned toward baseline after noise exposure was terminated. Plasma catecholamines were also decreased during noise exposure. A control animal which received only masking noise did not demonstrate decreases in cardiovascular parameters. The possibility of classically conditioned associations of noise onset with feeding was discussed.

The effects of pentobarbital upon auditory and visual thresholds in the baboon

Adult male baboons were trained to perform a reaction time procedure, which required holding a lever depressed for varying time intervals and releasing it during a 1.5 sec test stimulus to receive food. The test stimulus was a 16 kHz tone for auditory threshold testing, and a white light for visual threshold testing. Stimulus intensities were randomly varied to determine detection thresholds, and the latency of each correct lever release was recorded as a measure of reaction time. Acute, IM injections of pentobarbital (1.0 to 17.0 mg/kg) were given at the beginning of 2-hr experimental sessions. Pentobarbital elevated the absolute visual threshold and increased both auditory and visual reaction times in a dose-related manner. Two of three baboons showed reaction time and visual threshold decrements at pentobarbital doses which produced no change in absolute auditory thresholds.

Single-unit activity in the auditory cortex of monkeys actively localizing sound sources: spatial tuning and behavioral dependency

Single-unit recordings were made from the auditory cortex of unanesthetized rhesus monkeys which were trained to perform a second localization task. Recordings were made from 196 units in 4 animals. Five sound sources were located at 0 degrees (midline) and on either side at azimuths of 37.5 degrees and 75 degrees. Almost most units responded to each of the 5 sources, 49% of the units had peak firing rates for the source on the contralateral side at 75% azimuth. Another 26% of the units had peak firing rates at the 37.5 degrees contralateral location, while only 11% had peak rates for the ipsilateral locations. In order to determine whether the behavior of actively locating a sound source affected units in auditory cortex, response rates compared under two behavioral conditions: one which required the detection of a sound regardless of location and another condition which required identification of a sound's location. of the 196 units, 16 had different response rates for the two conditions, with 15 of the 16 units having higher evoked rates in the localization task. For the 16 units, the difference in firing rate was typically observed for a single speaker location. No correlation could be determined between a unit's location within the subdivisions of auditory cortex and its spatial tuning response properties or its dependency upon behavioral condition.

Psychophysical profiles differentiate drugs of abuse

Behavioral reaction times and both auditory and visual absolute thresholds were determined in baboons before and after the administration of stimulant and depressant drugs of abuse. Pentobarbital and diazepam increased reaction times and elevated the visual threshold in a dose-dependent manner. Diazepam also raised the auditory threshold though pentobarbital did not. Chlordiazepoxide affected neither sensory thresholds nor reaction times over the same dose range; d-methylamphetamine elevated the visual threshold, but did not elevate the auditory threshold or increase reaction times.

Auditory intensity discrimination in blackbirds and pigeons

Redwing blackbirds, brown-headed cowbirds, and pigeons were trained with operant conditioning techniques to respond to small increases in the intensity of pulsed tone trains at three frequencies: .5, 1.0, and 2.0 kHz. All three species produced similar intensity difference limens (DLs) at the frequencies tested. Intensity DLs decreased as sensation level (intensity level above absolute threshold) increased at all three frequencies, with the slopes of these sensation level functions being greatest at 2.0 kHz . The median intensity DLs at 50 dB sensation level were 3.3, 2.7, and 2.9 dB at .5, 1.0, and 2.0 kHz, respectively, averaged over the three species. Some subjects were also required to detect decreases in intensity. They produced intensity DLs two to three times larger than the DLs obtained when these same subjects were required to detect increases in intensity. Avian intensity DLs generally appear to be 1-2 dB higher than the DLs of those mammals that have been tested (rat, cat, monkey, humans).

Aspects of frequency discrimination in passerine birds and pigeons

With the use of a positive reinforcement operant technique, pulsed-tone, frequency difference limens (DLs) were measured in two Icterid passerine species, the redwing blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) and the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). Direct comparisons were made with two nonpasserine control (pigeon) subjects. Blackbirds were more sensitive than pigeons to frequency changes above 1.0 kHz but less sensitive below 1.0 kHz. Measured DLs in all these birds were within the range of nonhuman mammals but higher than those of humans. The lowest delta f/f ratio for all birds occurred at 4.0 kHz, a frequency for which they exhibit minimal absolute auditory thresholds and which is a dominant component in the song of the redwing. As in humans, blackbird sensitivity at 1.0 and 2.0 kHz declined as sensation level (SL) was decreased, but at 4.0 kHz, sensitivity showed no clear dependence on SL. At 8.0 kHz, near the upper limit of blackbird hearing, sensitivity increased with a decrease in SL. This latter frequency is a dominant component in the song of the cowbird. Differences in frequency sensitivty were also found as a function of the direction of frequency shift from the standard: Upward shifts produced lower DLs at 1.0 and 2.0 kHz, and downward shifts produced lower DLs at 8.0 kHz.

Shaping the location of a pigeon's peck: effect of rate and size of shaping steps

For several pigeons, pecking at particular locations within a ten-inch-wide response area was reinforced by grain presentations. The reinforced locations changed systematically to "shape" response location back and forth across the area. The rate and size of these shifts in reinforced locations were varied in both between-subject and within-subject comparisons to evaluate the influence of these variables on the shaping process. Larger step sizes produced larger shifts in location for all sizes inspected, with all sizes from .5 to 3.0 inches effective in shaping behavior. More rapid steps were approximately as effective as slower steps for all rates of shift inspected from 25 reinforcers to 400 reinforcers per step. These data suggest that shaping peck location proceeds most efficiently with rapid, relatively large shifts in criterion performance.

Electrophysiologic studies of the auditory cortex in the awake monkey

An overview of some recent developments in the study of central auditory processes is presented. We describe findings from single cell physiologic studies that contribute to our understanding of central auditory function, the development of behavioral techniques permitting precise evaluation of hearing in animals, and the power and potential of integrative neurophysiologic-behavioiral investigations in defining and analyzing central neural mechanisms that underlie normal perception and imperception. The influence of changes in intermodality attention on evoked activity of 25 cells of the auditory cortex is described and compared to effects of other attentional changes. A small but consistent increase in excitatory cell evoked discharge rate and a reduction in initial latency of response are shown to be correlated with a shift from a visual to an auditory task. In general, behavioral states ranging from sleep-waking to attention to a specific acoustic cue are shown to influence responsiveness of the auditory system and variability of response. Procedures are described for effective control of attentional factors and reduction of electrophysiologic variability. The contributions of these data and procedures to studies of the encoding of complex auditory signals and studies of neural mechanisms underlying such disorders as noise induced hearing loss are discussed.

Single-unit activity in the auditory cortex of monkeys selectively attending left vs. right ear stimuli

Single-unit responses were recorded from the auditory cortex of rhesus monkeys that were performing an auditory selective attention task. Acoustic stimuli were presented randomly to either the left or right ear through headphones. In a given block of trials one ear was selected as the ear to be attended, and was indicated by lighting either a left or right response key. The animal's task was to press the lighted key whenever stimuli were presented to the attended ear, but to make no response to stimuli presented to the other ear. The attended ear was alternated on successive blocks of trials. Fourteen of 77 units showed significantly greater rates of evoked discharges for an attended stimulus than for an identical non-attended stimulus. The increase in stimulus-evoked activity was not accompanied by any increase in spontaneous activity or by any changes in the pattern of a unit's response. Changes in firing rate occurred at latencies as early as 20 msec.

Evoked unit activity in auditory cortex of monkeys performing a selective attention task

Single-unit responses were recorded from the auditory cortex of rhesus monkeys performing a selective atteintion task which used combined light and sound stimuli. The animals were first trained to push a lever to the left for a noise burst and to the right for a tone burst, and then trained to push left for a left light and right for a right light. Subsequently, one of the four possible light and sound stimulus combinations (Noise + Left Light, Noise + Right Light, Tone + Left Light, Tone + Right Light) was randomly presented on each trial. In blocks of 100 trials only one part of the combined stimulus (either the light or the sound) determined the direction of lever push that would be reinforced. Responses of single units to identical sound stimuli were compared for blocks in which sound was the relevant cue and blocks in which light was the relevant cue. Typically, differences were in response strength without alteration of response pattern. Even the earliest response components (15-20 msec latency) could show changes. Two-thirds of the response comparisons showed differences in strength depending upon whether sound or light was the relevant cue, with about as many responses stronger for light relevant as for sound relevant. Independent of which modality was relevant, unit responses for trials in which both parts of the combined light and sound stimulus indicated the same direction of lever push were generally stronger than unit responses for trials in which the two parts of the combined stimulus signalled opposite directions of lever pushes.
