Abstract
BACKGROUND Left ventricular negative remodelling after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is considered as the major cause for the poor prognosis. But the predisposing factors and potential mechanisms of left ventricular negative remodelling after STEMI remain not fully understood. The present research mainly assessed the association between the stress hyperglycaemia ratio (SHR) and left ventricular negative remodelling. METHODS We recruited 127 first-time, anterior, and acute STEMI patients in the present study. All enrolled patients were divided into 2 subgroups equally according to the median value of SHR level (1.191). Echocardiography was conducted within 24 h after admission and 6 months post-STEMI to measure left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), and left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD). Changes in echocardiography parameters (δLVEF, δLVEDD, δLVESD) were calculated as LVEF, LVEDD, and LVESD at 6 months after infarction minus baseline LVEF, LVEDD and LVESD, respectively. RESULTS In the present study, the mean SHR was 1.22 ± 0.25 and there was significant difference in SHR between the 2 subgroups (1.05 (0.95, 1.11) vs 1.39 (1.28, 1.50), p < 0.0001). The global LVEF at 6 months post-STEMI was significantly higher in the low SHR group than the high SHR group (59.37 ± 7.33 vs 54.03 ± 9.64, p = 0.001). Additionally, the global LVEDD (49.84 ± 5.10 vs 51.81 ± 5.60, p = 0.040) and LVESD (33.27 ± 5.03 vs 35.38 ± 6.05, p = 0.035) at 6 months after STEMI were lower in the low SHR group. Most importantly, after adjusting through multivariable linear regression analysis, SHR remained associated with δLVEF (beta = -9.825, 95% CI -15.168 to -4.481, p < 0.0001), δLVEDD (beta = 4.879, 95% CI 1.725 to 8.069, p = 0.003), and δLVESD (beta = 5.079, 95% CI 1.421 to 8.738, p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS In the present research, we demonstrated for the first time that SHR is significantly correlated with left ventricular negative remodelling after STEMI.

Long-term prognosis of chronic total occlusion treated by successful percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with or without diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Cardiovasc Diabetol 2021; 20:29. [PMID: 33516214 PMCID: PMC7847176 DOI: 10.1186/s12933-021-01223-8] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/09/2020] [Accepted: 01/20/2021] [Indexed: 12/12/2022] Open
Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is highly prevalent among patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusion (CTO). Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of CTO-PCI in patients with or without DM. Methods All relevant articles published in electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library) from inception to August 7, 2020 were identified with a comprehensive literature search. Additionally, we defined major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) as the primary endpoint and used risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to express the pooled effects in this meta-analysis. Results Eleven studies consisting of 4238 DM patients and 5609 non-DM patients were included in our meta-analysis. For DM patients, successful CTO-PCI was associated with a significantly lower risk of MACEs (RR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.55–0.82, p = 0.0001), all-cause death (RR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.38–0.56, p < 0.00001), and cardiac death (RR = 0.35, 95% CI 0.26–0.48, p < 0.00001) than CTO-medical treatment (MT) alone; however, this does not apply to non-DM patients. Subsequently, the subgroup analysis also obtained consistent conclusions. In addition, our study also revealed that non-DM patients may suffer less risk from MACEs (RR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.02–1.56, p = 0.03) than DM patients after successful CTO-PCI, especially in the subgroup with a follow-up period of less than 3 years (RR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.22–1.67, p < 0.0001). Conclusions Compared with CTO-MT alone, successful CTO-PCI was found to be related to a better long-term prognosis in DM patients but not in non-DM patients. However, compared with non-DM patients, the risk of MACEs may be higher in DM patients after successful CTO-PCI in the drug-eluting stent era, especially during a follow-up period shorter than 3 years.

Abstract
Introduction The efficacy of fibrinolysis therapy with deferred percutaneous coronary angioplasty (FPCI) versus primary angioplasty (PPCI) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is unclear when medical quarantine is needed. Patients and Methods Acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients underwent PPCI after finishing the screening protocol from January 23, 2020 to June 10, 2020 while FPCI was applied when COVID-19-confirmed cases reoccurred in Beijing near our hospital from June 11, 2020 to July 20, 2020. The door-to-balloon time (DTB) or door-to-needle time (DTN) as well as in-hospital adverse clinical outcomes were compared between the two groups. A propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was performed to diminish the potential influence of confounding factors on the clinical outcomes. Results A total of 126 STEMI patients underwent PPCI after finishing the screening protocol and 17 patients received FPCI before PSM. Patients who received FPCI were younger than patients who underwent PPCI (50.8±14.0 versus 64.1±14.2 years, p=0.001), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) was less common in FPCI patients than in patients who underwent PPCI (0% versus 24.6%, p=0.024). The DTN was significantly shorter than DTB (25.8±4.2 versus 61.1±10.7, p=0.000) before PSM. The DTN was significantly shorter than DTB (26.9±4.2 versus 64.9±23.6, p=0.000); however, the incidence rate of in-hospital ischemia and bleeding adverse clinical outcomes were comparable between the two groups after PSM. Conclusion Fibrinolysis therapy combined with deferred PCI can reduce the ischemia time and has a similar in-hospital adverse clinical outcome rate compared with patients who underwent primary PCI during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-COV-2), has compromised health care systems and normal management of patients with cardiovascular diseases [1-3]. Patients with non-communicable diseases, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are vulnerable to this stress [4, 5]. Acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most critical type of AMI, is associated with high mortality even with modern medicine [6-8]. Timely reperfusion therapy is critical for STEMI patients because a short ischemia time is associated with better clinical outcomes and lower acute and long -term mortality [9-12]. The COVID-19 pandemic placed the management of STEMI patients in a difficult situation due to the need to balance timely reperfusion therapy and maintaining strict infection control practices [13, 14]. Telemedicine, which is used to deliver health care services using information or communication technology, provides an opportunity to carry out the evaluation, diagnosis, and even monitor the patients after discharge when social distancing is needed [15]. In this article, we reported our preliminary experience with the usefulness of telemedicine in managing STEMI patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also provided a review of this topic.

Abstract
Cesium carbonate-mediated anomeric O-alkylation of various protected 2-azido-2-deoxy-d-mannoses with primary triflate electrophiles afforded corresponding 2-azido-2-deoxy-β-mannosides in good yields and excellent anomeric selectivity. In addition, 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin was found to be the optimal oxidant for preparation of those 2-azido-2-deoxy-d-mannoses from their corresponding thioglycosides. The utilization of this method was demonstrated in the synthesis of a tetrasaccharide fragment of Micrococcus luteus teichuronic acid containing N-acetyl-β-d-mannosaminuronic acid (ManNAcA).

Abstract
Background Immediate and long-term functional outcomes after percutaneous treatment of small vessel disease (SVD) with drug-coated balloon (DCB) versus drug-eluting stent (DES) remain unknown. The study sought to investigate whether treatment of de novo SVD with DCB yields similar functional results compared with DES, as judged with angiography-based quantitative flow ratio (QFR). Methods and results QFR was measured at pre-procedural, post-procedural and 9-month angiography in all available subjects from the non-inferiority RESTORE SVD China trial, in which patients were randomized to Restore DCB (n = 116) or Resolute DES (n = 114) study arms. Primary outcome of this analysis was 9-month QFR. Pre-procedural, post-procedural and 9-month QFR was performed in 84.8% (195/230), 83.0% (191/230) and 93.8% (181/193) cases, respectively. At 9 months, the QFR of DCB showed no significant difference to DES (0.88 ± 0.23 vs. 0.92 ± 0.12, p = 0.12). Both 9-month QFR and the QFR difference between post-procedure and 9-month follow-up were correlated with angiographic percentage of diameter stenosis and late loss, and predictive of 2-year clinical outcome. Conclusions Treatment of coronary SVD with DCB resulted in similar 9-month functional results compared with DES. This study provides evidences to the value of QFR as a mean of evaluating device performance after coronary revascularization. Abstract
Genomic imprinting is a rare epigenetic process in mammalian cells that leads to monoallelic expression of a gene with a parent-specific pattern. The UBE3A (ubiquitin protein ligase E3A) gene is imprinted with maternal allelic expression in the brain but biallelically expressed in all other tissues in humans. The silencing of the paternal UBE3A allele is thought to be caused by the paternally expressed antisense RNA transcript of UBE3A-ATS. The aberrant imprinted expression of the UBE3A is associated with several neurodevelopmental syndromes and psychological disorders. Cattle are a valuable model species in determining the genetic etiology of sporadic human disorder, and maternal expression of UEB3A has been revealed by next-generation sequencing study in the bovine conceptus. In this study, we investigated the allelic expression of UBE3A and UBE3A-ATS in adult bovine somatic tissues. To confirm the splicing pattern of bovine UBE3A, five 5' alternative transcripts (MT210534-MT210538) were first obtained from bovine brain tissue by RT-PCR. Based on 10 SNP genotypes, we found that the brain-specific monoallelic expression of bovine UBE3A did not occur along the entire locus, and there was a shift from biallelic expression to monoallelic expression in exon 14 of the UBE3A gene. However, the brain-specific monoallelic expression of bovine UBE3A-ATS occurred in the entire gene. These observations demonstrated that the monoallelic expression did not occur along the bovine UBE3A entire locus and was associated with the genomic position.

Abstract
Background The clinical value of monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) in in-stent restenosis (ISR) of patients who have undergone bare metal stent implantation has been studied. However, the predictive value of MHR in ISR for patients who have undergone drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation has not been explored. Methods Non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) patients who had undergone DES implantation and coronary angiography follow-up at the Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2018, were retrospectively enrolled. Patients were divided into ISR and non-ISR groups depending on the follow-up coronary angiography results. Relative clinical information was recorded and analyzed. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimum cut-off pre-procedural MHR to predict ISR. Results A total of 214 patients were enrolled in our study. The mean period between two coronary angiography procedures was 25.4±9.8 months. Percutaneous coronary intervention due to NSTE myocardial infarction, a bifurcation lesion, increased platelet count, and a high MHR were the independent risk factors in multivariate logistic regression analyses. Conclusion Our results indicated that elevated MHR is an independent and useful predictor of ISR in NSTE-ACS patients who have undergone DES implantation.

Abstract
PURPOSE This meta-analysis compared the efficacy and safety of oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy alone versus OAC plus single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) in patients with an indication for chronic OAC (mostly due to atrial fibrillation) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). METHODS A systematic literature search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to identify relevant studies. Data was extracted from the eligible studies and outcomes expressed as relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Five studies comprising 1344 patients with an indication for chronic OAC and undergoing TAVI were included. Of the 1344 patients, 480 patients received OAC therapy alone and 864 patients received OAC plus SAPT. There were no significant differences between OAC alone versus OAC plus SAPT in all-cause mortality (RR = 1.05, 95% CI 0.84-1.30, p = 0.69) and ischemic stroke (RR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.95-1.61, p = 0.86). However, OAC alone was associated with significantly lower risks of all bleeding events (RR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.49-0.69, p < 0.0001) and major and/ life-threatening bleeding events (RR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.42-0.76, p = 0.0002) compared to OAC plus SAPT. CONCLUSION In patients with an indication for chronic anticoagulation, post-TAVI antithrombotic therapy with OAC alone compared to OAC plus SAPT may be not significantly different in reducing all-cause mortality and ischemic stroke, but has an important benefit in a significantly lower risk of all bleeding and major and/life-threatening bleeding events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of telemedicine in reducing delay times and short-term adverse clinical outcomes in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is unclear. This study compared outcomes in patients with STEMI who had percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and the use of a telemedicine app from August 2019 to March 2020 at a single center in Beijing, China. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 243 patients with STEMI who underwent PCI were consecutively enrolled and divided into 2 groups according to the date, before or after the pandemic. The 2 groups were further divided into patients who used the app for consulting and those who did not. RESULTS The time from symptom onset to calling an ambulance (SCT), door to balloon time (DTB), and total ischemia time (TIT) were significantly prolonged in patients after the pandemic. Patients who used the app had shorter SCT, DTB, and TIT before and after the pandemic compared to those who did not. Adverse clinical outcomes were significantly higher after compared with before the pandemic, despite the incidence rate of stroke, any revascularization, and stent thrombosis. However, there was no significant difference in short-term adverse clinical outcomes between patients who used the app and those who did not before and after the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Telemedicine reduced the delay time of STEMI patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The difference in short-term adverse clinical outcomes was not statistically significant between patients who used the app and those who did not.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ustilaginoidea virens has become one of the most devastating rice pathogens in China, as well as other rice-growing areas. Autophagy is an important process in normal cell differentiation and development among various organisms. To date, there has been no optimized experimental system introduced for the study of autophagy in U. virens. In addition, the function of autophagy in pathogenesis remains unknown in U. virens. Therefore, the functional analyses of UvAtg8 may potentially shed some light on the regulatory mechanism and function of autophagy in U. virens. RESULTS In this study, we characterized the functions of UvAtg8, which is a homolog of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ScAtg8, in the rice false smut fungus U. virens. The results showed that UvATG8 is essential for autophagy in U. virens. Also, the GFP-UvATG8 strain, which could serve as an appropriate marker for monitoring autophagy in U. virens, was generated. Furthermore, this study found that the ΔUvatg8 mutant was defective in the vegetative growth, conidiation, adaption to oxidative, hyperosmotic, cell wall stresses, and production of toxic compounds. Pathogenicity assays indicated that deletion of UvATG8 resulted in significant reduction in virulence of U. virens. Further microscopic examinations of the infection processes revealed that the severe virulence defects in the ∆Uvatg8 were mainly caused by the highly reduced conidiation and secondary spore formation. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicated that the UvAtg8 is necessary for the fungal growth, stresses responses, conidiation, secondary spore formation, and pathogenicity of U. virens. Moreover, our research finding will potentially assist in further clarifying the molecular mechanism of U. virens infection, as well as provide a good marker for autophagy in U. virens and a good reference value for the further development of effective fungicides based on gene targeting.

Abstract
Valence electrons contribute a small fraction of the total electron density of materials, but they determine their essential chemical, electronic and optical properties. Strong laser fields can probe electrons in valence orbitals1-3 and their dynamics4-6 in the gas phase. Previous laser studies of solids have associated high-harmonic emission7-12 with the spatial arrangement of atoms in the crystal lattice13,14 and have used terahertz fields to probe interatomic potential forces15. Yet the direct, picometre-scale imaging of valence electrons in solids has remained challenging. Here we show that intense optical fields interacting with crystalline solids could enable the imaging of valence electrons at the picometre scale. An intense laser field with a strength that is comparable to the fields keeping the valence electrons bound in crystals can induce quasi-free electron motion. The harmonics of the laser field emerging from the nonlinear scattering of the valence electrons by the crystal potential contain the critical information that enables picometre-scale, real-space mapping of the valence electron structure. We used high harmonics to reconstruct images of the valence potential and electron density in crystalline magnesium fluoride and calcium fluoride with a spatial resolution of about 26 picometres. Picometre-scale imaging of valence electrons could enable direct probing of the chemical, electronic, optical and topological properties of materials.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are major defense-related phenolics in mulberry, but the mechanism underlying their biosynthesis remains uncharacterized. In this study, the relationship between the expression of genes encoding anthocyanidin reductase (ANR) or leucoanthocyanidin reductase (LAR) and PA biosynthesis was investigated in white and red mulberry fruits. In ripening fruits, the MnANR and MnLAR transcription levels tended to decrease, whereas the catechin and epicatechin contents initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, the PA content exhibited a clearly different trend. The ectopic expression of MnANR and MnLAR in tobacco increased the resistance to Botrytis cinerea, as evidenced by the less extensive disease symptoms of the transgenic plants compared with the wild-type plants. In vitro experiments revealed that the transgenic tobacco crude leaf extract had an obvious inhibitory effect on B. cinerea. Moreover, the ectopic expression of MnANR and MnLAR in tobacco inhibited the expression of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes, resulting in decreased anthocyanin contents in flowers. The results of this study may be useful for elucidating the mechanism underlying PA biosynthesis. Furthermore, ANR and LAR represent potential targets for improving the resistance of mulberry and related plant species to B. cinerea.

Abstract
A number of structurally diverse D-mannose-derived lactols, including various deoxy-D-mannoses and conformationally restricted bicyclic D-mannoses, have been synthesized and investigated in mechanistic studies of β-mannosylation via Cs2CO3-mediated anomeric O-alkylation. It was found that deoxy mannoses or conformationally restricted bicyclic D-mannoses are not as reactive as their corresponding parent mannose. This type of β-mannosylation proceeds efficiently when the C2-OH is left free, and protection of that leads to inferior results. NMR studies of D-mannose-derived anomeric cesium alkoxides indicated the predominance of the equatorial β-anomer after deprotonation. Reaction progress kinetic analysis suggested that monomeric cesium alkoxides be the key reactive species for alkylation with electrophiles. DFT calculations supported that oxygen atoms at C2, C3, and C6 of mannose promote the deprotonation of the anomeric hydroxyl group by Cs2CO3 and chelating interactions between Cs and these oxygen atoms favour the formation of equatorial anomeric alkoxides, leading to the highly β-selective anomeric O-alkylation. Based on experimental data and computational results, a revised mechanism for this β-mannosylation is proposed. The utilization of this β-mannosylation was demonstrated by an efficient synthesis of the hexasaccharide core of complex fucosylated N-linked glycans.

Abstract
Associations between elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the angina pectoris risk have been reported for many years, but the results remain controversial. To address this issue, a meta-analysis was therefore conducted. Eligible studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and web of science up to January 2019. Altogether, 10 prospective cohort studies and 11 case-control studies were included, and they were published from 1997 to 2013 and summed up to 18,316 samples totally. The pooled mean difference of CRP levels was 4.44 (95% confidence interval 2.71 to 6.17) between angina patients and healthy controls. The combined odds ratio of CRP for major adverse cardiac events in angina patients was 1.67 (95% CI 1.23 to 2.26). In conclusion, the meta-analysis indicated that elevated CRP levels were associated with angina pectoris, especially unstable angina pectoris, and were probably a risk factor of major adverse cardiac events.

Abstract
A phenylselenoglycosylation reaction of glycal derivatives mediated by diphenyl diselenide and phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) under mild conditions is described. Stereoselective glycosylation has been achieved by installing fused carbonate on those glycals. 3,4-O-Carbonate galactals and 2,3-O-carbonate 2-hydroxyglucals are converted into corresponding glycosides in good yields with excellent β-selectivity, resulting in 2-phenylseleno-2-deoxy-β-galactosides and 2-phenylseleno-β-mannosides which are good precursors of 2-deoxy-β-galactosides and β-mannosides, respectively.

Abstract
An adjustable slab-aberration compensator (ASAC) with the ability to compensate the large magnitude inherent wavefront aberrations in the slab width direction is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The ASAC has a size of 130mm×45mm (effective aperture of 75mm×28mm) and 11 actuators along the length with a contact spacing of 8 mm. The design is optimized by simulations in terms of the mirror's coupling coefficient with the contact areas, mechanical properties of the driving units, and the mirror thickness. The initial surface figure of the ASAC has PV and RMS values of 55 nm and 10 nm, and the dynamic range is 30 µm. In our experiments, a 20 kW Nd: YAG quasi-continuous wave (QCW) slab laser is further compensated by the ASAC system. The beam quality increases from 15× to 3.5× diffraction limit at 20 kW output after correction. Besides, the proposed ASAC can maintain the surface shape after power shutdown and have good thermal stability. The temperature rise of the ASAC is less than 7 °C in the 20 kW laser correction experiment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical treatment methods for patients with complex coronary artery disease (CAD) who have undergone vascular reconstruction mainly include coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The purpose of the study aimed to compare a 1-year follow-up for the patient clinical outcomes and costs between PCI and CABG treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS There were 840 patients enrolled in this study from July 2015 to September 2016. Among the study participants, 420 patients underwent PCI treatment and 420 patients underwent off-pump CABG. Patients costs were assessed from the perspective of the China healthcare and medical insurance system. EuroQOL 5-dimension 3 levels (EQ-5D-3L) questionnaire was used to evaluate the general health status, and the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) was used to assess the disease-specific health status. RESULTS After a 1-year follow-up, the all-cause mortality (P=0.0337), the incidence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (P<0.001), and additional revascularization (P<0.001) in PCI group were significantly higher than those in CABG group. Both groups have significant sustained benefits in the SAQ subscale. The CABG group had a higher score on the frequency of angina than the PCI group. In addition, the quality-adjusted life year value of PCI and CABG resulted was 0.8. The average total cost for PCI was $14 643 versus CABG cost of $13 842 (P=0.0492). CONCLUSIONS In the short-term, among the CAD patients with stable triple-vessel or left-main, costs and clinical outcomes are substantially higher for CABG than PCI. Long-term, economic, and health benefits analysis, is warranted.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the functions and mechanisms of miR-608 in prostate cancer (PCa). CISH and qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that miR-608 was low expressed in PCa tissues and cells, which was partly attributed to the methylation of CpG island adjacent to the transcription start site (TSS) of miR-608 gene. Intracellular miR-608 overexpression inhibited in vivo PCa tumor growth, and suppressed PCa cell proliferation, G2/M transition, and migration in vitro, which was independent of EMT-associated mechanisms. Then RAC2, a GTPase previously deemed hematopoiesis-specific but now discovered to exist and play important roles in PCa, was verified by western blot and dual-luciferase reporter assays to mediate the effects of miR-608 through RAC2/PAK4/LIMK1/cofilin pathway. MiR-608 also promoted the apoptosis of PCa cells through BCL2L1/caspase-3 pathway by targeting the 3'-UTR of BCL2L1. Moreover, PAK4, the downstream effector of RAC2, was found to be targeted by miR-608 at the mRNA coding sequence (CDS) instead of the canonical 3'-UTR. Knocking down RAC2, PAK4, or BCL2L1 with siRNAs reproduced the antiproliferative, mitosis-obstructive, antimigratory and proapoptotic effects of miR-608 in PCa cells, which could be attenuated by downregulating miR-608. In conclusion, miR-608 suppresses PCa progression, and its activation provides a new therapeutic option for PCa.

Abstract
Synthesis of a variety of sugar lactols (hemiacetals) has been accomplished in moderate to excellent yields by using bromine-mediated oxidation of thioglycosides. It was found that acetonitrile is the optimal solvent for this oxidation reaction. This approach involving bromine as oxidant is superior to that using N-bromosuccimide (NBS) which produces byproduct succinimide often difficult to separate from the lactol products.

Abstract
CLINICAL ISSUE Due to the high prevalence of clinically suspected cholecystitis or cholecystolithiasis the gallbladder is one of the organs examined the most by imaging. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS In most clinical settings ultrasound is the primary imaging method because of its wide availability, speed and superior spatial resolution. In cases of ambiguous findings or potential complications computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used. METHODICAL INNOVATIONS When specific problems arise these imaging modalities may be enhanced by special techniques, e. g. contrast-enhanced ultrasound or dual-energy CT, and specific MRI sequences. PERFORMANCE Special variants of cholecystitis, such as xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis and adenomyomatosis, may pose a particularly difficult diagnostic problem as they may resemble other diseases. Sequelae of cholecystolithiasis, such as the Mirizzi syndrome and acute bowel obstruction, may complicate the imaging algorithm as the location and the symptoms shift. Cases of neoplastic diseases of gallbladder cancer and other malignancies require a broad spectrum of imaging modalities. ACHIEVEMENTS Although the gallbladder can easily be examined with ultrasound, some cases require a more thorough ultrasound examination. In some cases only a combination of multiple imaging modalities yield the diagnosis. Further developments regarding technical issues and the diagnostic algorithm can be expected. PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS Ultrasound is the best first imaging modality. In cases of ambiguous findings or clinical complications CT or MRI are recommended.

Abstract
Herein, five polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) obtained from Morus notabilis (Mn) were characterized. Chlorogenic acid was the most readily oxidized substrate by these MnPPOs, and the products derived from the oxidation of chlorogenic acid by MnPPOs were tested for antimicrobial activity. The results showed that products of the five MnPPOs exhibited good inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and Botrytis cinerea. Because the products of MnPPO1 exhibited the strongest antimicrobial activity, the antimicrobial mechanism of these products was explored. The results showed that the products of MnPPO1 increased cell membrane permeability and chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase activities.
