Abstract
BACKGROUND Most of the information available about Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) at present is gained through imaging modalities including plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). But the accuracy of MRI in this disease and its predictive value to reveal various intra-articular pathologies is not known. We correlated the findings of MRI with those seen on hip arthroscopy in children with active stage of LCPD. METHODS We conducted a prospective observational study in which MRI findings were correlated with corresponding findings on hip arthroscopy in a cohort of 25 patients of active LCPD below 12 years of age. The parameters noted on MRI included status of ligamentum teres, status of the labrum, synovial effusion if any, condition of the femoral and acetabular articular cartilage including chondral flaps, chondral indentation and intra-articular loose bodies. The indication of performing hip arthroscopy was persistent severe hip pain (Wong-Baker FACES pain scale ≥ 3) after 6 months of conservative management. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated for MRI considering arthroscopy as a gold standard. RESULTS Synovial effusion was seen in a large number of patients on both MRI (17) and hip arthroscopy (24). The sensitivity (95% confidence interval) of MRI was found to be low, especially with respect to labral tears [25% (0.63-80.6)] and intra-articular loose bodies [20% (0.51-71.6)]. NPV for synovial effusion was also found to be low [12.5% (0.32-52.7)], although specificity and PPV of MRI were found to be good for all the parameters. CONCLUSIONS MRI cannot be completely relied upon for identifying all the intra-articular pathologies in children with LCPD, although it has a good complimentary role. In patients with severe persistent pain with suspicion for joint changes, hip arthroscopy can provide a safe and efficient procedure (better than MRI) for eliciting the associated joint pathology.

Anomalous Evolution of the Near-Side Jet Peak Shape in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 119:102301. Abstract
The measurement of two-particle angular correlations is a powerful tool to study jet quenching in a p_{T} region inaccessible by direct jet identification. In these measurements pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) differences are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher p_{T} trigger particle (1<p_{T,trig}<8 GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low p_{T} is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4 GeV/c, while in the Δφ direction the peak is almost independent of centrality. For the 10% most central collisions and 1<p_{T,assoc}<2 GeV/c, 1<p_{T,trig}<3 GeV/c a novel feature is observed: a depletion develops around the center of the peak. The results are compared to pp collisions at the same center of mass energy and ampt model simulations. The comparison to the investigated models suggests that the broadening and the development of the depletion is connected to the strength of radial and longitudinal flow.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P_{2}≡⟨Δp_{T}Δp_{T}⟩/⟨p_{T}⟩^{2}, in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. Results for P_{2} are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δϕ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P_{2}, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system.

Abstract
Abstract
The oldest local approach to breast cancer prevention is surgery. The largest and most rigorous description of this procedure in a high risk population comes from the Mayo Clinic, where 639 women underwent bilateral mastectomy for prevention between 1960 and 1993. Of these procedures, 90% were subcutaneous mastectomies, i.e. ∼90% of the breast was removed, with preservation of the nipple and areola. The breast cancer incidence in this population, with 13 year follow-up, was 90% of the expected incidence. A subset was tested for BRCA1/2 mutations, and among 26 mutations carriers, no cancers were observed. Subsequent studies have focused on more defined high risk populations, mainly carriers of BRCA1/2 mutations. In one recent meta-analysis, the pooled relative risk (RR) was 0.11; 95% CI, 0.04-0.32. However, all-cause mortality was unaffected by mastectomy. Nipple-sparing mastectomy has emerged as an option for mutation carriers recently, and data are beginning to accumulate that overall satisfaction with reconstruction results, and sexual well-being, are greater with the nipple-sparing procedures. The long-term cancer risk data following nipple-sparing procedures are not yet mature.
However, mastectomy carries a large physical and emotional cost, which could be avoided if effective non-surgical prevention options were available. Breast cancer prevention in high risk women and those with carcinoma in situ requires that the breast be exposed to an effective agent; systemic exposure is unnecessary, and its harms lead many eligible women to decline preventive therapy. Local transdermal therapy (LTT) to the breast involves the application of active drugs to the breast skin, resulting in high concentrations in the breast but low systemic exposure. It is non-invasive, self-delivered, and not dependent on hepatic metabolism. Existing data on LTT include two pre-surgical window trials of topical 4-hydroxytamoxifen (an active tamoxifen metabolite) in women with invasive breast cancer, and duct carcinoma in situ (DCIS). These demonstrate that LTT with 4-OHT decreases proliferation of invasive and non-invasive cancer cells to a similar degree as oral tamoxifen, with low systemic levels, and no effect on coagulation proteins. These data are promising regarding the use of LTT with 4-OHT for breast cancer prevention, and for therapy of DCIS, but also suggest that LTT could be developed for any small, lipophilic molecule with good dermal permeation, thus greatly expanding the menu of drugs that could be tested for breast cancer prevention. Another locally targeted approach involves the intraductal delivery of active drugs, using a catheter to cannulate the nipple duct orifice. Preliminary studies using Doxil in rodents and in humans have shown this is feasible, but concerns have been raised regarding carcinogenicity of cytotoxic drugs. More recently, RNA interference therapy, and trastuzumab conjugated to a cytotoxic alpha-emitter 225Ac, have been tried in mouse models of DCIS with some success. A trial of intraductal fulvestrant is on-going. Both transdermal and intraductal local therapy approaches hold promise, but are challenging in distinct ways. Nevertheless, ongoing research suggests that local therapy options for breast cancer prevention can move beyond surgical resection of breast tissue.

Abstract
Abstract
Background:In vitro and preclinical data support the notion that anti-progesterone therapy will have activity against both estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER/PR) positive and negative breast cancer, but biomarkers of efficacy may differ in different types of breast cancer. We have conducted a pre-surgical window trial of oral telapristone acetate (TPA, CDB-4124) treatment in early breast cancer patients. This first ever trial of oral TPA for breast cancer and DCIS patients will provide us pilot biologic data that will help select the right population and the right biomarkers for future trials. Here we report distribution of TPA in plasma and breast normal tissue and tumors collected at surgery.
Methods:our trial was a 1:1 randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled pre-surgical window trial of oral TPA 12mg (Proellex, CDB-4124, Repros Therapeutics Inc.) treatment for 2-10 weeks. 70 pre and postmenopausal women undergoing surgery for Stage 0-II breast cancer were recruited to the study. The surgical samples of 61 patients were used to determine the concentrations of TPA and its mono-demethylated metabolite (dTPA, CDB-4453) in plasma and matched normal tissue and tumor by Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry at the Illinois Institute of Technology, while maintaining the blind for the primary endpoint of cell proliferation. Statistical significance and analysis were calculated by Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test and non-parametric Spearman correlation.
Results: We found that 32/61 women displayed detectable plasma concentrations of TPA and dTPA (median with IQR) 109ng/mL (71.3, 216) and 46.5 ng/mL (34.2, 73.7), respectively. TPA concentration was 2.3 times higher than dTPA in plasma (p<0.0001). The normal and tumor tissue samples of these 32 women were further analyzed. In normal tissue samples, the concentrations of TPA and dTPA were 283 ng/g (70.7, 326) and 51.0 ng/g (24.4, 122), respectively. TPA concentration was 5.5 fold higher than dTPA in normal tissue (p<0.0001). In tumors, the TPA and dTPA concentrations were 137 ng/g (31.1, 278) and 36.4 ng/g (17.3, 68.7), respectively. TPA concentration was 3.8 fold higher than dTPA in tumors (p<0.0001).Interestingly, TPA and dTPA were more abundant in normal tissue than in tumors (p=0.0005 for TPA, and p=0.0013 for dTPA). We found that TPA and dTPA was highly correlated in plasma (r=0.492, p=0.0042). Plasma TPA concentration was highly correlated with normal tissue concentration (r=0.61, p=0.0003) but non-significantly correlated with tumor concentration (r=0.32, p=0.147). However, the normal and tumor tissue concentrations of TPA and dTPA were highly correlated (r=0.71, p=0.0002 for TPA and r=0.556, p=0.0072 for dTPA).
Conclusions: Plasma TPA concentrations reflect concentration in normal breast tissue better than in tumors. However, within the breast, TPA concentration in normal and tumor tissue is correlated. Our trial is to be unblended shortly, and we plan to relate these results to the proliferative rates in tumor and normal tissue. The variability observed in plasma and tissue concentrations also suggests that pharmacogenomics studies may be appropriate in the future.

Correlated Event-by-Event Fluctuations of Flow Harmonics in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 117:182301. Abstract
We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic v_{2} and quadrangular v_{4} flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between v_{2} and triangular v_{3} flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, ampt, and hijing models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Importance of papillary muscle infarction detected by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in predicting cardiovascular events. Int J Cardiol 2016; 220:558-63. [PMID: 27390987 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijcard.2016.06.201] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/09/2016] [Revised: 05/23/2016] [Accepted: 06/25/2016] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest that papillary muscle infarction (PMI) following recent myocardial infarction (MI) correlates with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and prognostic significance of PMI by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in a large cohort of patients. METHODS Retrospective study of patients who underwent CMR between January 2007 and December 2009 were evaluated for the presence of PMI in one or both of the left ventricle papillary muscles. The primary outcome was a time to a combined endpoint of all-cause mortality and worsening heart failure. Secondary outcomes were time to individual components of the combined outcome. RESULTS 419 patients were included in our analysis, 232 patients (55%) had ischemic cardiomyopathy. Patients were followed at six-month intervals for a median follow-up time of 3.7 (interquartile range (IQR): 1.6; 6.3) years after initial imaging. During this period 196 patients (46.8%) had a primary outcome and 92 patients (22%) died. PM infarct was identified in 204 (48.7%) patients with twice as many posteromedial (PRM) (27%) than anterolateral (ARL) lesions (11%) and a similar number with infarct in both (11%). There was no association between studied outcomes and the presence of PMI in either PRM or ARL PM. The presence of infarct in both PM was a predictor of both the primary outcome (HR 1.69, CI[1.01-2.86], p<0.049.) and mortality (HR 1.69, CI[1.01-4.2], p<0.046). CONCLUSION The presence of infarct in either papillary muscle was not associated with outcomes. However, infarct involving both papillary muscles was associated with worse outcomes.

Abstract
The pseudorapidity density of charged particles, dN_{ch}/dη, at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions has been measured at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. For the 5% most central collisions, we measure a value of 1943±54. The rise in dN_{ch}/dη as a function of sqrt[s_{NN}] is steeper than that observed in proton-proton collisions and follows the trend established by measurements at lower energy. The increase of dN_{ch}/dη as a function of the average number of participant nucleons, ⟨N_{part}⟩, calculated in a Glauber model, is compared with the previous measurement at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A constant factor of about 1.2 describes the increase in dN_{ch}/dη from sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 to 5.02 TeV for all centrality classes, within the measured range of 0%-80% centrality. The results are also compared to models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.

Measurement of an Excess in the Yield of J/ψ at Very Low p_{T} in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 116:222301. Abstract
We report on the first measurement of an excess in the yield of J/ψ at very low transverse momentum (p_{T}<0.3 GeV/c) in peripheral hadronic Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV, performed by ALICE at the CERN LHC. Remarkably, the measured nuclear modification factor of J/ψ in the rapidity range 2.5<y<4 reaches about 7 (2) in the p_{T} range 0-0.3 GeV/c in the 70%-90% (50%-70%) centrality class. The J/ψ production cross section associated with the observed excess is obtained under the hypothesis that coherent photoproduction of J/ψ is the underlying physics mechanism. If confirmed, the observation of J/ψ coherent photoproduction in Pb-Pb collisions at impact parameters smaller than twice the nuclear radius opens new theoretical and experimental challenges and opportunities. In particular, coherent photoproduction accompanying hadronic collisions may provide insight into the dynamics of photoproduction and nuclear reactions, as well as become a novel probe of the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract
We report the first results of elliptic (v_{2}), triangular (v_{3}), and quadrangular (v_{4}) flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the central pseudorapidity region |η|<0.8 and for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<5 GeV/c. The anisotropic flow is measured using two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity gap greater than one unit and with the multiparticle cumulant method. Compared to results from Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV, the anisotropic flow coefficients v_{2}, v_{3}, and v_{4} are found to increase by (3.0±0.6)%, (4.3±1.4)%, and (10.2±3.8)%, respectively, in the centrality range 0%-50%. This increase can be attributed mostly to an increase of the average transverse momentum between the two energies. The measurements are found to be compatible with hydrodynamic model calculations. This comparison provides a unique opportunity to test the validity of the hydrodynamic picture and the power to further discriminate between various possibilities for the temperature dependence of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the produced matter in heavy-ion collisions at the highest energies.

Abstract
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA(1)c) is a well-established indicator of mean glycemia. The presence of genetic variants of hemoglobin can profoundly affect the accuracy of HbA(1)c measurements. Variants of hemoglobin especially Hemoglobin E (HbE) is prevalent in South East Asia including Bangladesh. The objective of our study is to compare the HbA(1)c values measured on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Turbidimetric Inhibition Immunoassay (TINIA) in diabetic patients with variant hemoglobins including HbE. A total of 7595 diabetic patients receiving treatment at BIRDEM General Hospital were analyzed for HbA(1)c results within a period of two months from December 2013 to January 2014. Seventy two cases out of 7595 (0.95%) had either undetectable or below normal HbA(1)c levels (males-33 and females-39; ratio = 0.82:1) by HPLC method. In 34(0.45%) cases, HbA(1)c value was undetectable by HPLC method but was in the reportable range by TINIA method. In the other 38 (0.55%) cases, HbA(1)c levels were below the reportable range (<4%) by HPLC method but were in the normal or higher range by TINIA method. TINIA method did not agree with HPLC method on Bland Altman plot in the 38 cases with below normal HbA(1)c levels, [Mean bias -5.2(-9.3 to 1.0), 95% CI] but agreed very well [mean bias -0.21 (-0.84 to 0.42), y=1.1037+0.776X; r(2)=0.30, p<0.01] in controls. In control group mean MCV was 83.80±7.48 and in study group was 73.65±10.44. Alkaline electrophoresis confirmed the variant hemoglobin to be HbE. The fasting blood sugar levels of all the 72 cases correlated strongly with TINIA method (r(2) =0.75, p<0.0001) but not with HPLC (r = 0.24, p=0.13). In our regions where populations have a high prevalence of Hb variant, proper knowledge of hemoglobin variants which affect the measurements HbA(1)c level is essential. MCV of 80fl or below may serve as a rough guide to select samples that require analysis by TINIA method. Moreover, HPLC may be a convenient and inexpensive tool for screening of hemoglobinopathies especially among diabetic population in Bangladesh. It may therefore be helpful in improving management of complications related to both anaemia and iron overload.

Abstract
Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a viral neurologic disease of global public health importance. JE is caused by an RNA virus - the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) belonging to genus Flavivirus in the family Flaviviridae. JE is endemic in many parts of Asia and western pacific. Annually, approximately 50,000 JE cases are reported with case fatality rates as high as 30-35% resulting in ~15,000 deaths. Presently, there are no successful drugs against JE. Docking of JEV NS3 helicase/NTPase helicase domain with 10 compounds was performed in iGEMDOCK v2.1. Integrated docking, screening, post- analysis and visualization were performed using RasMol software. The drug susceptibility was evaluated by virus yield reduction assay. Three ligands out of 10 antibiotic compounds studied showed highest binding affinity with receptor protein. Kanamycin, Rolitetracycline and Doxycycline showed better binding energy compared to two study standards- Ribavirin and Minocycline. Interacting bonds were formed in all three domains of NS3 helicase/NTPase. The interactions in motifs I, II and VI of helicase are important; these would have possibly inhibited viral replication. Biological assay showed that Kanamycin (Inhibitory concentration50, IC50 - 70 µg/ml), Rolitetracycline (IC50 - 76 µg/ml) and Doxycycline (IC50 - 22 µg/ml) inhibited plaque formation.

Abstract
Human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) channels conduct delayed rectifier K(+) current. However, little information is available on physiological situations affecting hERG channel protein and function. In the present study we examined the effects of intermittent hypoxia (IH), which is a hallmark manifestation of sleep apnea, on hERG channel protein and function. Experiments were performed on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, which express hERG protein. Cells were exposed to IH consisting of alternating cycles of 30 s of hypoxia (1.5% O2) and 5 min of 20% O2. IH decreased hERG protein expression in a stimulus-dependent manner. A similar reduction in hERG protein was also seen in adrenal medullary chromaffin cells from IH-exposed neonatal rats. The decreased hERG protein was associated with attenuated hERG K(+) current. IH-evoked hERG protein degradation was not due to reduced transcription or increased proteosome/lysomal degradation. Rather it was mediated by calcium-activated calpain proteases. Both COOH- and NH2-terminal sequences of the hERG protein were the targets of calpain-dependent degradation. IH increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]i), calpain enzyme activity, and hERG protein degradation, and all these effects were prevented by manganese-(111)-tetrakis-(1-methyl-4-pyridyl)-porphyrin pentachloride, a membrane-permeable ROS scavenger. These results demonstrate that activation of calpains by ROS-dependent elevation of [Ca(2+)]i mediates hERG protein degradation by IH.

Abstract
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To better understand women's knowledge and perceptions of breast cancer prevention medications and determine if a topical administration of these medications would increase acceptability.
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with healthy women identified through the breast center of a single institution. An experienced moderator led participants through a discussion of breast cancer risk perceptions, knowledge of and concerns about risk reduction medications, and their views of a skin application of risk reducing medication. Participants provided sociodemographic information, breast cancer risk factors, and prior physician recommendations to take risk-reducing medicines. Trained research personnel examined all qualitative results systematically. Participants' breast cancer risk was estimated using the Gail Model.
RESULTS: Four focus groups (N=32) were conducted. Most participants had at least a college degree (78.2%) and were of either European (50%) or African ancestry (31%). The majority (72%) were at elevated risk for breast cancer, just over half of these women perceived themselves to be at higher than average risk. Only 19% of participants had prior knowledge of preventive medications. Women who perceived themselves to be at high risk were more likely to know about preventive medications than those who did not, 38% vs 0% respectively. Over 90% of the focus group participants stated that they would prefer a topical application of a preventive medication to a pill if their physician advised them to take preventive medication.
CONCLUSION: Awareness of preventive medications was low even in a highly educated sample of high-risk women. If given a choice in the route of administration of chemoprevention, nine out of ten women preferred a gel to a pill. Future work should focus on demonstrating a reduction in side effects of topical over oral medications and raising awareness of chemopreventive options for breast cancer to increase acceptance of preventive medications.

Abstract
The present study investigated the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) enzyme in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in Wistar-Kyoto rats. The effect of L-arginine administration on cardiac structure, arterial stiffness, renal and systemic hemodynamic parameters was studied and the change in expression of eNOS and cystathione γ lyase (CSE) in the myocardium of LVH rats was evaluated. LVH was induced using isoprenaline (5 mg/kg, S.C.) and caffeine (62 mg/L in drinking water) for 14 days. Following to that, L-arginine (1.25 g/L in drinking water) was given for 5 weeks as a donor of NO. eNOS and CSE gene expressions were down regulated in the LVH group by about 35% and 67% respectively when compared to control. However, in the LVH group treated with L-arginine there was up regulation of eNOS by almost 27% and down regulation in CSE by 24% when compared to control (all P < 0.05). Heart index and H2S plasma levels were reduced by almost 53% in the L-arginine treated LVH group compared to the control (all P < 0.05). Mean arterial pressure, heart rate and pulse wave velocity were reduced while renal blood perfusion increased in L-arginine treated LVH rats compared to their untreated counterparts (all P < 0.05). The enhanced expression of eNOS in L-arginine treated LVH rats resulted in the amelioration of oxidative and haemodynamic parameters suggesting that NO system is an important therapeutic target in cardiac and LV hypertrophies.

Abstract
The study was conducted to establish the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) method of controlling oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel). The sterile male ratio of oriental fruit fly was optimized for possible field application of Sterile Insect Technique. Several batches of 5 and 6-dayold pupae were irradiated at 30, 40, 50 and 60 Gray (Gy) to optimize the radiation dose of sterilization. Highest pupal duration and abnormal adults were found after imposing gamma radiation in 5-day-old pupae treated with 60 Gy dose. Radiation significantly increased the nonemergence percentage and decreased the normal emergence of oriental fruit fly. The sterilizing doses were recorded as 60 Gy for 5-dayold pupae. Fixed number of virgin females of oriental fruit flies were allowed to mate with unirradiated and irradiated males at 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 and 1:9 ratios in different cages to find out the rate of suppression against wild population. Minimum pupal recovery and percent normal emergence observed at 1:9 ratio. Deformed and undeveloped (not emerged) population increased with the ratio of irradiated males. The 1:9 ratio was found as the best for suppression of wild population of B. dorsalis.SAARC J. Agri., 13(2): 50-60 (2015)

Abstract
BACKGROUND Furanone and pyrrolone heterocyclic ring system represent important and interesting classes of bioactive compounds. Medicinal chemists use these heterocycyclic moieties as scaffolds in drug design and discovery. METHODS A series of 3-arylidene-5-(naphthalene-2-yl)-furan-2(3H)-ones (2a-j) were synthesized by incorporating pharmacophore of COX-2 inhibitor rofecoxib and naphthyl ring of naproxen as potential non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. These furanone derivatives were subsequently reacted with dry ammonia gas and benzylamine to furnish corresponding 3-arylidene-5-(naphthlen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2(3H)-ones (3a-e) and 3-arylidene-1-benzyl-5- (naphthalene-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2(3H)-ones (4a-e), respectively. The newly prepared heterocyclics were screened for their expected in-vivo biological activities including anti-inflammatory, analgesic and ulcerogenic actions in rodents. The COX-2 inhibitory behavior of synthesized compounds was also assessed via automated docking studies. RESULTS The chemical structure of the synthesized compounds was characterized by using modern spectroscopic techniques. Result of in-vivo pharmacological studies demonstrated that almost all N-Benzyl-pyrrol-2(3H)-ones (4a-e) showed better anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities in comparison with the other two series of furan-2(3H)-ones and pyrrol- 2(3H)-ones. The moldock score value of the tested compounds was found in the range of -116.66 to -170.328 and was better than the standard drug. CONCLUSION Among all the synthesized compounds, only nine compounds (2d, 2g, 2h, 3d, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e) exhibited potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities with significantly reduced gastrointestinal toxicity in various animal models in comparison to standard drug, diclofenac. Therefore, it is recommended to explore the potential of the synthesized compounds as lead candidates for the development of new therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Background: The emergence of antimalarial drug resistance malaria parasite is widespread in North eastern region of India. During January 2012-December 2013, we conducted active surveillance for detection of antifolate resistance-associated genetic polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite from different malaria endemic areas of Assam. Materials and Methods: A total of 281 field samples were collected from suspected malaria patients of which 106 malaria P. falciparum positive cases were detected in microscopic slide examination. A nested PCR was done for amplification of a 648 bp portion of the dhfr gene and 710 bp portion of the dhps gene. Results: Mutation analysis revealed existence of three different haplotypes of the P. falciparum dhfr gene of which ANRNI was highly prevalent (90%). Triple mutant haplotypes AIRNI (N51I + C59R + S108N) of the dhfr gene associated with pyrimethamine resistance were prevalent in Chirang district of Assam. Whereas, dhps mutation study revealed that triple mutant haplotype AGEAA (S436A + A437G + K540E) associated with Sulphadoxine resistance was found among 26% of P. falciparum field isolates. However, P. falciparum dhfr-dhps two locus mutation analysis showed that there were a total of nine dhfr-dhps genotypes. Conclusion: It was noticed that 93.62% (88/94) isolates had mutations in the sequences of both enzymes, which is an indication of prevalence of high grade of Sulphadoxine — pyrimethamine resistance in P. falciparum malaria parasites in Assam.

Abstract
Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite had developed resistance to almost all the currently used antimalarial drugs. The purpose of the study was to come across the genetic distances in P. falciparum dhps gene sequences circulating in Assam. A partial fragment of P. falciparum dhps gene containing major single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with sulphadoxine resistance were amplified and sequenced. Thereafter specific bioinformatics tools like BioEdit v7.0.9, ClustalW in Mega 5, DnaSP version v.5.10.01 etc were used for the analysis. A total of 100 P. falciparum positive cases in different malaria endemic areas of Assam were included for the study. Based upon the mutation analysis, a total of seven different P. falciparum dhps genotypes were observed with five variable sites. Maximum five haplotypes were found in the P. falciparum isolates from Jorhat district of Assam. Four polymorphic sites were observed in the P. falciparum dhps gene sequences in Karbi Anglong, NC Hills, Chirang and Jorhat whereas the isolates from other study areas had three polymorphic sites. A statistically significant positive value of Tajima's D were observed among the P. falciparum field isolates in Assam indicating that there is an excess of intermediate frequency alleles and can result from population bottlenecks, structure and/or balancing selection. Extensive gene flow took place among the P. falciparum population of Jorhat with Sivasagar, Chirang with Sivasagar and Chirang with Karbi Anglong. However, large genetic differentiation was observed among the P. falciparum isolates of NC Hills with Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Golaghat and also the parasite population of Karbi Anglong with Lakhimpur and Tinsukia signifying little gene flow among the population. This finding has shown that mutant Pfdhps gene associated with sulphadoxine resistance is circulating in Assam. It is believed that, the parasite population may have undergone high level of breeding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Antimalarial resistance in P. falciparum malaria parasite creates a serious obstacle in malaria control programme. Keeping this in mind, in the present study antifolate resistance associated point mutations in P. falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (Pfdhfr) and dihydropteroate synthetase (Pfdhps) genes among the field samples in Arunachal Pradesh were determined. METHODS Blood samples were collected from 145 suspected malaria patients/healthy control subjects in malarious areas of Lohit and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh, India during January 2012 to December 2013. RESULTS In microscopic slide examination, 51.03% (74/145) were found malaria positive. Plasmodium falciparum mono-infection was observed in 62.16% (46/74) of total malaria positive cases. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed in all the P. falciparum positive samples for detection of 648 bp of Pfdhfr and 710 bp of Pfdhps genes. All the amplified products were analysed for detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms in dhfr and dhps genes. A total of four different genotypes of Pfdhfr gene were observed, of which double mutant allele ANRNI was mostly prevalent and it was found in 65.22% (30/46) cases. Likewise, four different haplotypes of Pfdhps gene were detected, of which triple mutant allele AGEAA shares 69.57% (32/46) followed by other haplotypes. In Pfdhfr-Pfdhps two locus mutations analysis, two isolates in Changlang district had shown quintuple mutant haplotype AIRNL-AGEAA, likely to be associated with treatment failure. The P. falciparum two locus dhfr-dhps haplotype (ANRNI-AGEAA) was observed in 56.52% (26/46) cases. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION Overall, high grade of sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance associated genetic polymorphisms were observed among the P. falciparum parasite population in Arunachal Pradesh during the study period.

Measurement of pion, kaon and proton production in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2015; 75:226. [PMID: 26041975 PMCID: PMC4446008 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-015-3422-9] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/02/2015] [Accepted: 04/20/2015] [Indexed: 05/14/2023]
Abstract
The measurement of primary [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] production at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text] 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] 7 TeV performed with a large ion collider experiment at the large hadron collider (LHC) is reported. Particle identification is performed using the specific ionisation energy-loss and time-of-flight information, the ring-imaging Cherenkov technique and the kink-topology identification of weak decays of charged kaons. Transverse momentum spectra are measured from 0.1 up to 3 GeV/[Formula: see text] for pions, from 0.2 up to 6 GeV/[Formula: see text] for kaons and from 0.3 up to 6 GeV/[Formula: see text] for protons. The measured spectra and particle ratios are compared with quantum chromodynamics-inspired models, tuned to reproduce also the earlier measurements performed at the LHC. Furthermore, the integrated particle yields and ratios as well as the average transverse momenta are compared with results at lower collision energies.
