Abstract
AIM To investigate the computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with stage IE/IIE extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) arising in the nasal cavity and to evaluate whether imaging findings revealed by CT have prognostic value. MATERIALS AND METHODS The CT findings of 62 patients diagnosed with IE/IIE ENKTL arising in the nasal cavity were retrospectively reviewed. Imaging findings were investigated, and evaluated imaging findings were analysed for the prognostic value of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS Of the 62 patients, 21 (34%) presented with a superficial infiltrative, 38 (61%) with a mass forming, and three (5%) with a combined pattern. Of all imaging findings, local invasiveness (n = 26, 42%), including bony destruction, erosion, or soft-tissue involvement, was the only independent prognostic factor for OS [p = 0.008; hazard ratio (HR): 3.85; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.42-10.44] and DFS (p = 0.001; HR: 4.25; 95% CI: 1.72-10.47). In a subgroup analysis of 36 cases with no local invasiveness, a superficial infiltrative pattern in one nasal cavity was a positive prognostic factor for OS (p = 0.028) and DFS (p = 0.008). CONCLUSION Imaging findings at CT provided clinically useful predictions for treatment outcomes. Local invasiveness revealed by CT findings was a strong prognostic factor for poor OS and DFS. In addition, in patients with no local invasiveness, a superficial infiltrative pattern in one nasal cavity predicted favourable OS and DFS.

Abstract
The MYC oncogene is not only deregulated in cancer through abnormally high levels of expression, but also through oncogenic lesions in upstream signalling cascades. Modelling MYC deregulation using signalling mutants is a productive research strategy. For example, the MYC threonine-58 to alanine substitution mutant (T58A) within MYC-homology box 1 is more transforming than wild-type (WT) MYC, because of decreased apoptosis and increased protein stability. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms controlling T58 phosphorylation has led to new approaches for the development of MYC inhibitors. In this manuscript, we have extensively characterized a MYC signalling mutant in which six lysine residues near the highly conserved MYC homology box IV and basic region have been substituted to arginines (6KR). Previous literature suggests these lysines can undergo both ubiquitylation and acetylation. We show MYC 6KR is able to fully rescue the slow growth phenotype of HO15.19 MYC-null fibroblasts, and promote cell cycle entry of serum-starved MCF10A cells. Remarkably, 6KR increased anchorage-independent colony growth compared with WT MYC in both SH-EP and MCF10A cells. Moreover, it was also more potent in promoting xenograft tumour growth of Rat1A and SH-EP cells. Combined, our data identify this region and these six lysines as important residues for the negative regulation of MYC-induced transformation. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that, unlike T58A, the increased transformation is not a result of increased protein stability or a reduced capacity for 6KR to induce apoptosis. Through expression analysis and luciferase reporter assays, we show that 6KR has increased transcriptional activity compared with WT MYC. Combined, through a comprehensive evaluation across multiple cell types, we identify an important regulatory region within MYC. A better understanding of the full scope of signalling through these residues will provide further insights into the mechanisms contributing to MYC-induced tumorigenesis and may unveil novel therapeutic strategies to target Myc in cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate interobserver agreement and determine whether a new MRI grading system agrees with symptoms and neurological signs. METHODS We examined 160 patients (72 males and 88 females; mean age 57 years) who underwent MRI of the lumbar spine at our institution and were evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists. The presence and grade of central lumbar spinal stenosis (CLSS) at L3-4, L4-5 and L5-S1 were assessed according to a new grading system, the Lee system. The results were correlated with clinical manifestations and neurological examinations [positive neurological manifestation (PNM) and negative neurological manifestation (NNM)]. Statistical analyses were performed using kappa statistics and non-parametric correlation analysis (Spearman's correlation). RESULTS Interobserver agreement in the grading of CLSS between the two readers was substantial (κ=0.780). Interobserver agreement of the L4-5 level and older age group was high (0.789, 0.814). The correlation coefficient (R) of Reader 1 between MRI Grades 0, 1, 2 or 3 and neurological manifestations (negative or positive) was 0.654; the R of Reader 2 was 0.591. In the younger age group (<57 years), the R of Reader 1 was 0.634 and the R of Reader 2 was 0.500. In the older age group (≥57 years), the R of Reader 1 was 0.650 and the R of Reader 2 was 0.645. Correlation coefficients were higher at the L3-4 level (0.612-0.678) than at other levels but did not show statistical significance (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Interobserver agreement for the new CLSS grading system was substantial. Grade 0 was associated with NNMs and Grade 3 with PNMs in this cohort. Grade 2 demonstrates more cases of PNM than NNM but requires further evaluation. Correlations between MRI grades and clinical manifestations were moderate and slightly higher in older patients. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE The new practical MRI grading method can be useful in the categorisation of CLSS and shows strong clinical correlation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose a new and practical MRI grading method for cervical neural foraminal stenosis and to evaluate its reproducibility. METHODS We evaluated 50 patients (37 males and 13 females, mean age 49 years) who visited our institution and underwent oblique sagittal MRI of the cervical spine. A total of 300 foramina and corresponding nerve roots in 50 patients were qualitatively analysed from C4-5 to C6-7. We assessed the grade of cervical foraminal stenosis at the maximal narrowing point according to the new grading system based on T2 weighted oblique sagittal images. The incidence of each of the neural foraminal stenosis grades according to the cervical level was analysed by χ(2) tests. Intra- and interobserver agreements between two radiologists were analysed using kappa statistics. Kappa value interpretations were poor (κ<0.1), slight (0.1≤κ≤0.2), fair (0.2<κ≤0.4), moderate (0.4<κ≤0.6), substantial (0.6<κ≤0.8) and almost perfect (0.8<κ≤1.0). RESULTS Significant stenoses (Grades 2 and 3) were rarely found at the C4-5 level. The incidence of Grade 3 at the C5-6 level was higher than that at other levels, a difference that was statistically significant. The overall intra-observer agreement according to the cervical level was almost perfect. The agreement at each level was almost perfect, except for only substantial agreement at the right C6-7 by Reader 2. No statistically significant differences were seen according to the cervical level. Overall kappa values of interobserver agreement according to the cervical level were almost perfect. In addition, the agreement of each level was almost perfect. Overall intra- and interobserver agreement for the presence of foraminal stenosis (Grade 0 vs Grades 1, 2 and 3) and for significant stenosis (Grades 0 and 1 vs Grades 2 and 3) showed similar results and were almost perfect. However, only substantial agreement was seen in the right C6-7. CONCLUSION A new grading system for cervical foraminal stenosis based on oblique sagittal MRI provides reliable assessment and good reproducibility. This new grading system is a useful and easy method for the objective evaluation of cervical neural foraminal stenosis by radiologists and clinicians. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE The use of the new grading system for cervical foraminal stenosis based on oblique sagittal MRI can be a useful method for evaluating cervical neural foraminal stenosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical utility of the meniscal extrusion transverse ratio of the medial meniscus in the diagnosis of meniscal root tear compared with the gold standard of arthroscopic diagnosis. METHODS This retrospective study sample included 32 males and 35 females who underwent MRI at our institution. There were 24 meniscal root tear cases. The control groups were 18 cases of medial meniscal tears without root tears and 25 cases of negative meniscal findings on arthroscopy. Meniscal extrusion (L) and maximal transverse lengths (T) of the medial meniscus were measured, and L/T ratios were calculated. These results were correlated with arthroscopic findings and analysed statistically. With arthroscopic findings used as the standard of reference, the sensitivity and specificity of 10%, 11% and 12% extrusion thresholds, and 3 mm of medial meniscal extrusion (MME) as diagnostic thresholds, were calculated. RESULTS The mean length of the meniscal extrusions of meniscal root tears was twice as long as the control group. The mean L/T ratio of the meniscal root tears was approximately 13%, while those of the control groups were 5%. The differences in the L and L/T between the meniscal root tears and normal and meniscal root tears and other meniscal tears were statistically significant (p<0.001), but those between normal and other meniscal tears were not. The best diagnostic discrimination was achieved using an extrusion ratio threshold of 10% (79% sensitivity, 86% specificity). The 3 mm of MME threshold demonstrated high specificity (98%), but not high sensitivity (54%). CONCLUSION The mean L/T ratio of the meniscal root tears was approximately 13% and was statistically significant. The best diagnostic discrimination was achieved using an extrusion ratio threshold of 10%. Advances in knowledge The use of the L/T ratio in combination with MME can be a useful method for evaluating medial meniscal root tears.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is one of the major problems in managing metastatic breast cancer because of LM typically carries a devastating prognosis and often represents a terminal event. We analyzed the clinical features and outcomes of LM in patients with breast cancer.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with LM from breast cancer between 2002 and 2012 at Asan Medical Center.
Results: Of the 95 LM patients by cytologically proven (n = 81) or radiologically diagnosed (n = 14), 57 (60%) had an ECOG performance status (PS) ≥ 3, and the median age was 47 years (range, 26–72 years). The patients were diagnosed with LM after a median of 10.3 months (95% CI, 5.5–15.0 months) from the time of diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. LM was present in 2 patients at the time of initial diagnosis. Twenty-three patients (24.2%) had isolated CNS metastasis, and 6 (6.3%) had only LM without any detectable metastasis sites. At the time of diagnosis of LM, 46 patients (48.4%) presented with coincidental failure of systemic disease control. Seventy-eight patients (82.1%) underwent intrathecal chemotherapy (methotrexate; n=78, thiotepa; n=11), resulting in one-third of cytologic negative conversion (n = 26), and 41 (43.2%) received systemic chemotherapy. The overall median survival time was 3.3 months (95% CI, 2.5–4.2 months) and 7.8% of the patients survived for more than 1 year. Overall survival tended to be better in patients who achieved cytologic negative conversion to intrathecal chemotherapy than those did not (median 4.5 months versus 3.2 months, P = 0.241). Overall survival was not different according to subtypes; hormone receptor (+), HER2 (+), and triple negative (median 3.6 months, 3.3 months, and 3.2 months, P = 0.937). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that ECOG PS ≥ 3 (HR = 2.09, 95% CI 1.21–3.58, P = 0.007), coincidental failure of systemic disease control at LM (HR = 3.01, 95% CI 1.76–5.15, P < 0.001), and systemic chemotherapy after LM (HR = 0.40, 95% CI 0.24–0.68, P = 0.001) were independent factors associated with survival.
Conclusions: The prognosis for patients with LM from breast cancer was still poor. Systemic chemotherapy in addition to intrathecal chemotherapy might confer a survival benefit, even after the detection of LM.

Abstract
It is observed that the magnitude of the toroidal rotation speed is reduced by the central electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) regardless of the direction of the toroidal rotation. The magnetohydrodynamics activities generally appear with the rotation change due to ECRH. It is shown that the internal kink mode is induced by the central ECRH and breaks the toroidal symmetry. When the magnetohydrodynamics activities are present, the toroidal plasma viscosity is not negligible. The observed effects of ECRH on the toroidal plasma rotation are explained by the neoclassical toroidal viscosity in this Letter. It is found that the neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque caused by the internal kink mode damps the toroidal rotation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Infants grow rapidly, which causes the SCM to thicken physiologically. Therefore some cases of physiologically-thickened SCM can be confused with a poor response to physical therapy. There have been only a few quantitative ultrasonographic studies on the clinical outcome of rehabilitation for CMT. Our aim was to evaluate whether a new sonographic assessment method that uses the muscular thickness ratio of the SCM can help quantify the outcome of rehabilitation therapy for patients with CMT. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated 48 patients (male/female, 17:31; mean age, 3.9 months) who were diagnosed with CMT and who underwent initial and follow-up sonography. The ratio of the thickness of the involved SCM to the thickness of the intact SCM (SCM thickness ratio) was calculated. A scoring system based on the range of motion of the neck was used to assess clinical improvement. The correlations between clinical improvement and the thickness of the involved muscle, the difference in involved muscle thickness, the SCM thickness ratio, and the difference in the SCM thickness ratio were evaluated with Spearman rank correlations. RESULTS Follow-up Cheng scores were higher than initial scores; this difference indicates clinical resolution (follow-up, 4.90; initial, 3.38). The SCM thickness ratio at follow-up was lower than that at the initial evaluation (follow-up, 1.29-1.34; initial, 1.65-1.77). Intra- and interobserver agreements were excellent. Most variables were moderately correlated with clinical improvement (correlation coefficients, 0.36-0.509). R1 showed the highest correlation with clinical improvement (0.481 and 0.509), followed by the initial maximal thickness of the SCM (0.434 and 0.488). ΔP (P1-P2) and ΔR showed similar correlation coefficients with clinical improvement. CONCLUSIONS Measurement of the SCM thickness ratio appears to overcome the problem of a false-positive diagnosis of clinical aggravation of CMT resulting from physiologic growth. R1 and ΔR are accurate objective measurements, which can be used in the management of CMT.

Abstract
Aneuploidy is frequently observed in cancers and is considered a crucial mechanism in cancer development. STAG2 is a gene that encodes a component of cohesion complex required for normal chromosomal segregation. Recently, somatic mutation of STAG2 gene and loss of STAG2 protein have been reported in glioblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma and melanoma. The aim of this study was to see whether such alterations of STAG2 are also common in other cancers. In this study, we analyzed STAG2 somatic mutation in 45 colorectal carcinomas (CRC), 45 gastric carcinomas (GC), 45 breast carcinomas, 45 non-small cell lung cancers and 45 prostate carcinomas (PCA) by single-strand conformation polymorphism. We analyzed also STAG2 protein expression in 100 GC, 103 CRC and 107 PCA by immunohistochemistry. STAG2 protein was well expressed in normal stomach, colon and prostate epithelial cells, while it was lost in 27% of GC, 23% of CRC and 30% of PCA. The loss of STAG2 was observed irrespective of subtypes, stages and grades of the cancers. However, we could not find any STAG2 mutations in these cancers. The loss of expression of STAG2 in GC, CRC and PCA tissues compared to their corresponding normal cells indicates that STAG2 loss is common in carcinomas as well. The data suggest also that loss of expression of STAG2, but not somatic mutation, might be responsible to STAG2 inactivation and is common in studied types of carcinomas.

Abstract
We examined whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC) enhanced embryonic body (EB) formation and neuronal differentiation in terms of EB formation, neuronal marker (microtubule-associated protein 2; MAP-2) expression, and neuron maturation using P19 embryonic stem cells. The size and numbers of EBs were greatly increased, together with the up-regulated N-cadherin expression. Also, MAP-2 expression and neurite outgrowth were much increased with activation of serine/threonine protein kinase (Akt) and blocked by addition of an Akt inhibitor (LY294002). Our results suggested that NAC increased EB formation by up-regulating the N-cadherin expression. Furthermore, NAC-enhanced neuronal differentiation was mediated by activation of Akt.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Recently, Lee et al reported a new grading system for the lumbar spinal foraminal stenosis. They considered the type of stenosis, the amount of fat obliteration, and the presence of nerve root compression. Our aim was to evaluate whether a new MR imaging grading system correlated with symptoms and neurologic signs and could replace the previous grading system. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined 91 patients (M/F = 49:42; mean age, 50 years) who visited our institution and underwent MR imaging of the L-spine and were evaluated by 2 musculoskeletal radiologists. The presence and grade of lumbar foraminal stenosis at the maximal narrowing point was assessed according to the new grading system suggested by Lee et al (Lee system) and the Wildermuth grading system (Wildermuth system). Results were correlated with clinical manifestations and neurologic physical examination. Statistical analysis was performed by using κ statistics, categoric regression analysis, and nonparametric correlation analysis (Spearman correlation). RESULTS Interobserver agreement in the grading of foraminal stenosis between the 2 readers was substantially correlated (κ of Lee system = 0.767, κ of Wildermuth system = 0.734). The Rs for reader 1 and reader 2 between the Lee system and the Wildermuth system were 0.880 and 0.885, between Lee system and PNM were 0.715 and 0.604, and between the Wildermuth system and PNM were 0.800 and 0.680. For patients younger than 50 years of age, the R between the Lee and Wildermuth systems was higher than that for patients 50 years or older, but the Rs between the grading system and PNM were lower in the younger group than in the older group. The Rs of the Wildermuth system with PNM were higher in the older group than in the younger group; the differences between the Rs of the Lee system with PNM and the Wildermuth system with PNM were higher in the older group (0.016 [young] versus 0.130 [old] and 0.008 versus 0.107). CONCLUSIONS Interobserver agreement of the Lee system was slightly higher than the Wildermuth system and substantially correlated. Both systems are good for evaluation of lumbar spinal foraminal stenosis, but the Lee system showed slightly better interobserver agreement and good clinical correlation in the younger group of patients.

Abstract
In this work we explored the selectivity of single nucleobases towards adsorption on chiral single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by density functional theory calculations. Specifically, the adsorption of molecular models of guanine (G), adenine (A), thymine (T), and cytosine (C), as well as of AT and GC Watson-Crick (WC) base pairs on chiral SWCNT C(6, 5), C(9, 1) and C(8, 3) model structures, was analyzed in detail. The importance of correcting the exchange-correlation functional for London dispersion was clearly demonstrated, yet limitations in modeling such interactions by considering the SWCNT as a molecular model may mask subtle effects in a molecular-macroscopic material system. The trend in the calculated adsorption energies of the nucleobases on same diameter C(6, 5) and C(9, 1) SWCNT surfaces, i.e., G > A > T > C, was consistent with related computations and experimental work on graphitic surfaces, however contradicting experimental data on the adsorption of single-strand short homo-oligonucleotides on SWCNTs that demonstrated a trend of G > C > A > T (Albertorio et al 2009 Nanotechnology 20 395101). A possible role of electrostatic interactions in this case was partially captured by applying the effective fragment potential method, emphasizing that the interplay of the various contributions in modeling nonbonded interactions is complicated by theoretical limitations. Finally, because the calculated adsorption energies for Watson-Crick base pairs have shown little effect upon adsorption of the base pair farther from the surface, the results on SWCNT sorting by salmon genomic DNA could be indicative of partial unfolding of the double helix upon adsorption on the SWCNT surface.

Abstract
In cases of retroviral infection, the host cell deploys antiviral proteins as a type of innate immunity. Tripartite motif-containing 5-isoform alpha (TRIM5α) is a potent antiviral protein. TRIM5α has been reported to restrict human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) 1 infection in rhesus monkey cells by targeting the incoming viral capsid at the postentry or preintegration stage of the viral life cycle. As a consequence, virus replication and reverse transcription are interrupted. TRIM5α of human origin has also been shown to inhibit N-tropic murine leukemia virus infection. To investigate the inhibitory effect of TRIM5α on porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) infection in humans, we constructed a 293T cell line stably expressing human TRIM5α (293T-huTRIM5α) and tested the infectivity of vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein envelope pseudotyped viruses (wild-type PERV [wt-PERV], N-tropic mutant PERV, N-tropic murine leukemia virus, and MoMLV). Infectivity of N-tropic mutant PERV was reduced by 43.3% in 293T-huTRIM5α cells, a decrease in efficiency that was more than 3-fold greater than that of wt-PERV in 293T-huTRIM5α cells. Human TRIM5α exhibited inhibitory activity against N-tropic MLV and N-tropic mutant PERV, but showed no antiviral activity against Moloney murine leukemia virus or wt-PERV.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hybrid therapy with catheter ablation of the cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI) and continuation of anti-arrhythmic drugs (AAD), or electrical cardioversion with AADs might be alternative treatments for patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). The goal of study was to assess the long term success rate of hybrid therapy for persistent AF compared to antiarrhythmic medication therapy after electrical cardioversion and identify the independent risk factors associated with recurrence after hybrid therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 patients with persistent AF who developed atrial flutter after the administration of a class Ic or III anti-arrhythmic drug were enrolled. This group was compared with a group (33 patients) who underwent cardioversion and received direct current cardioversion with AADs. Baseline data were collected, and electrocardiogram and symptom driven Holter monitoring were performed every 2-4 months. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the groups. The 12 month atrial arrhythmia free survival was better in the hybrid group, 49.0% vs. 33.1%, p=0.048. However, during a mean 55.7+/- 43.0 months of follow up, the improved survival rate regressed (p=0.25). A larger left atrium size was an independent risk factor for the recurrence of AF after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION Despite favorable outcome during 12 month, the CTI block with AADs showed outcomes similar to AAD therapy after electrical cardioversion over a 12 month follow up period. Minimal substrate modification with AADs might be an alternative treatment for persistent AF with minimal atrial remodeling.

Abstract
Non-reentrant focal tachycardias occur spontaneously, facilitated by catecholamine infusion, but they cannot be initiated or terminated with programmed stimulation. These tachycardias exhibit early activation before the QRS, however, do not typically show the mid-diastolic potential that is crucial for reentrant tachycardia maintenance. Electrophysiological studies are useful for distinguishing focal from macro-reentrant ventricular tachycardia. We report herein a case of patient without a history of structural heart disease who presented with a focal Purkinje ventricular tachycardia and heart failure. The focal Purkinje ventricular tachycardia was eliminated by radiofrequency catheter ablation. All of the patient's symptoms were improved after ablation.

Abstract
The dynamics of (3)He atoms in solid (4)He have been investigated by measuring the NMR relaxation times T(1) and T(2) in the region where a significant nonclassical rotational inertia fraction has been reported. For (3)He concentrations x(3)=16 and 24 ppm, changes are observed for both the spin-lattice relaxation time T(1) and the spin-spin relaxation time T(2) at the temperatures corresponding to the onset of the nonclassical rotational inertia fraction and, at lower temperatures, to the (3)He-(4)He phase separation. The magnitudes of T(1) and T(2) at temperatures above the phase separation agree roughly with existing theory based on the tunneling of (3)He impurities in the elastic strain field due to isotopic mismatch. However, a distinct peak in T(1) and a less well-resolved feature in T(2) are observed near the reported nonclassical rotational inertia fraction onset temperature, in contrast to the temperature-independent relaxation times predicted by the tunneling theory.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The hippocampal atrophy of MDD has been known, but the region shape contractions of the hippocampus in MDD were inconsistent. Spheric harmonic shape analysis was applied to the hippocampus in female patients with unremitting MDD to evaluate morphometric changes of the hippocampus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Shape analysis was performed by using T1-weighted MR imaging in 21 female patients with MDD and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Manually segmented hippocampi were parameterized, and the point-to-point-based group difference was compared by using the Hotelling T-squared test. The partial correlation analyses were tested between clinical variables and shape changes. RESULTS Both hippocampal volumes were small in patients with MDD compared with healthy controls, and the right hippocampal volume was negatively correlated with the number of episodes at marginal significance. Regional shape contractions were found in the ambient gyrus, basal hippocampal head, posterior subiculum, and dorsal hippocampus of the left hemisphere. The right hippocampus showed a similar pattern but was less atrophic compared with the left hippocampus. A negative correlation was found between the HDRS and shape deformation in the CA3, ambient gyrus, posterior subiculum, and gyrus fasciolaris of the left hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS We showed atrophy and regional shape contractions in the hippocampi of patients with MDD, which were more dominant on the left side. The causes of hippocampal damage could be the hypersecretion of glucocorticoids contributing to neuronal death or the failing of adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway is well-documented in PD, whereas neuronal changes beyond the nigrostriatal pathway are uncertain. The purpose of our study was to estimate volume changes in the striatum and thalamus, which are areas of the basal ganglia, as well as in GM and WM located beyond the nigrostriatal pathway, in early-stage PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS We enrolled 30 participants (15 healthy controls and 15 patients with PDND with H & Y stage I or II). Cognitive function was assessed by using the MMSE. ICV and the volumes of the caudate nucleus, putamen, thalamus, GM, and WM were calculated via 3D volume analysis by using MR imaging. RESULTS A comparison of the PD group with the control group revealed an absence of significant differences between them regarding age and MMSE scores. Comparison of the volumes of regional brain structures of patients with PD with those of controls revealed the presence of significant differences in the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and WM (P<.05) between the groups. However, there were no significant differences in the volumes of the putamen and GM or in ICV between patients with PD and controls. The results of ANCOVA by using the covariates of age and ICV showed a significant difference in the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and WM between patients with PD and controls (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS We suggest that loss of WM volume may occur in early disease stages and that variation of the volumes of the caudate nucleus and thalamus may be an early phenomenon of disease progression.

Abstract
Pure and mixed cobalt copper ferrites are of great interest due to their widespread application in electronics and medicine. We report on the electronic structure of a nanoferrite Cu(x)Co(1-x)Fe2O4 (0.0 < or = x < or = 1.0) system studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These magnetic nanoferrites (average crystallite size approximately 31-43 nm) were synthesized by an auto combustion method and are characterized by high resolution X-ray diffraction and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements at the O K and Co, Cu, and Fe L-edges. The O K-edge spectra suggest that there is a strong hybridization between O 2p and 3d electrons of Co, Cu and Fe cations and Fe L3,2-edge spectra indicate that Fe ions coexist in mixed valence states (Fe3+ and Fe2+) at tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel structure. Copper and cobalt ions are distributed in the divalent state in octahedral sites of the spinel structure. The origin of high saturation magnetization and coercivity in cobalt-copper ferrites are explained in light of these results.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of repeated starvation and feeding on the performance of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) used for treating saline wastewater. The effects of aerobic and non-aerobic conditions on the sludge during starvation were evaluated to recover the performance of the SBR in terms of floc size and pollutant removal after resuming wastewater feeding. The floc size, fractal dimension, sludge volume index (SVI), specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR), and pollutant removal efficiency were monitored. Experiment results revealed that the floc size and fractal dimensions decreased during starvation under both aerobic and non-aerobic conditions and increased after re-feeding wastewater. However, the difference in floc physical characteristics and performance depended on the starvation condition and was pronounced as starvation and re-feeding were repeated. The floc size and fractal dimensions decreased from 152.7 to 72.2 and 1.98 to 1.79 at the end of the fourth starvation period, resulting in deterioration of the sludge settleability and effluent quality. On the other hand, the floc size and fractal dimensions decreased from 158.7 to 135.7 and 1.95 to 1.81 at the end of the fourth starvation period but remained relatively constant after sludge adaptation. Some correlations were observed between the parameters monitored in this study. The results showed that maintaining the sludge under non-aerobic conditions was an effective strategy for reducing the effects of repeated starvation.

Abstract
The survival time of HIV/AIDS patients in Korea has increased since HAART (highly active anti-retroviral therapy) was introduced. However, the occurrence of drug-resistant strains requires new anti-retroviral drugs, one of which, an integrase inhibitor (INI), was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007. INIs have been used for therapy in many countries and are about to be employed in Korea. Therefore, it is important to identify basic mutant variants prior to the introduction of INIs in order to estimate their efficacy. To monitor potential drug-resistant INI mutations in Korean HIV/AIDS patients, the polymorphism of the int gene was investigated together with the pol gene using a genotypic assay for 75 randomly selected Korean HIV-1 patients newly diagnosed in 2007. The drug-resistant mutation sequences were analysed using the Stanford HIV DB and the International AIDS Society resistance testing-USA panel (IAS-USA). Seventy strains of Korean subtype B were compared with foreign subtype-B strains, and there were no significantly different variants of the int gene region in the study population. Major mutation sites in the integrase (E92Q, F121Y, G140A/S, Y143C/R, Q148H/R/K and N155H) were not detected, and only a few minor mutation sites (L74M, V151I, E157Q, V165I, I203M, S230N and D232N) were identified in 21 strains (28%). Resistance due to mutations in the pol gene was observed in a single strain (1.3%) resistant to protease inhibitors (PIs) and in four strains (5.3%) resistant to reverse transcriptase inhibitors (RTIs). In summary, this demonstrates that INIs will be susceptible to drug naïve HIV/AIDS patients in Korea.

Abstract
A 56-yr-old man with aborted sudden cardiac death underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation. While the ICD was being implanted, a left subclavian venogram failed to visualize the left subclavian vein, which was attributed to likely prolonged indwelling of the left subclavian sheath for venous access. Accordingly, the right subclavian vein was punctured and the ICD lead was diverted from the right side area to the active Can in the left pectoral area by tunneling over the sternum for high defibrillation threshold. The approach used in this case may be considered in patients who had difficult left subclavicular venous access and it may be prudent to save the left subclavian vein for ICD implantation in patients with fatal tachyarrhythmia.

Abstract
Cyclophilins (Cyps) belong to a group of proteins that have peptidyl-prolyl cis–trans isomerase (PPIase) and molecular chaperone activities. Originally, Cyps were identified as the intracellular receptors for the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporin A. Cyps are found in all prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and have been structurally conserved throughout evolution, implying their importance in cellular function. There are seven major Cyp isoforms in humans. CypA is up-regulated in many human cancers, and there is a strong correlation between over-expression of the CYPA gene and malignant transformation in some cancers. Moreover, CypA is directly under the transcriptional control of two critical transcription factors for cancer development: p53 and hypoxia inducible factor-1α. This review discusses the general biological functions of Cyps under a variety of stress conditions, and the importance and diverse roles of over-expression of CYP genes in human cancers, with a particular emphasis on CYPA. These oncogenic properties suggest that CypA is a promising target for cancer therapy.
