Abstract
The effects of intracerebroventricular injection of Anti-opioid peptide sera on oxytocin-induced enhancement of electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia were observed in this study. It was found that injection of anti-beta-endorphin serum (AEPS) alone could attenuate EA analgesia in rats. Injection of AEPS prior to intraventricular injection of oxytocin could not block the enhancement of EA analgesia by oxytocin. The antidynorphin A1-13 serum (ADYNS) alone could also reduce the EA analgesia, whereas injection of ADYNS prior to injection of oxytocin could potentiate the enhancement of EA analgesia by oxytocin. However, neither the anti-methionine enkephalin serum nor the anti-leucine enkephalin exerted any effect on the enhancement of EA analgesia by oxytocin. The above results showed that the dynorphin attenuate oxytocin-induced enhancement of EA analgesia, but Beta-endorphin and enkephalin do not affect this role of oxytocin. These data suggest the enhancement of EA analgesia by oxytocin is not dependent upon the endogenous pioid peptides in brain.

Abstract
Since arginine can stimulate lymphocyte proliferation in the healthy human, its effect on lymphocyte proliferation in vitro was studied in 7 patients with far advanced gastric cancer. These patients with normal nourishment were ambulatory and could consume a regular diet. A daily dietary supplement of 30 g arginine for 7 days did not alter the total lymphocyte counts or the T/B cell ratio in the peripheral blood. Enhancement of lymphocyte proliferation in response to mitogen stimulation was not observed. Furthermore, an in vitro study on the effect of arginine on phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocyte proliferation showed that lymphocytes from gastric cancer patients had poorer responses than those obtained from normal subjects, despite the supplement in the culture medium with normal serum, patient serum, or fetal bovine serum. Arginine ingestion did not impair liver function and had no detectable side effects except transient nausea in 1 patient. These results indicate that dietary arginine supplement appears safe but does not stimulate lymphocyte function in far advanced gastric cancer patients. The suppressed immune function in gastric cancer patients may be the result of their intrinsic lymphocyte defect.

Abstract
Torsade de pointes (TdP) syncopal episodes were almost invariably precipitated by emotional stress or menstruation in a 17-year-old girl. U wave accentuation occurred during sinus rhythm without pauses in periods of heightened sympathetic tone. To examine the role of early afterdepolarization (EAD), monophasic action potentials were recorded during ventricular extrasystoles and TdP occurring spontaneously and induced by ventricular pacing. The effects of lidocaine, verapamil, propranolol, and epinephrine were assessed. Our data show that: (1) EAD plays a significant role in the genesis of familial long QTU syndrome and TdP; (2) rapid ventricular pacing causes postpause-dependent EADs, U waves, and TdP; and (3) EAD is enhanced by epinephrine infusion in the absence of pause, whereas EAD-triggered firing is inhibited by verapamil and propranolol but not by lidocaine.

Abstract
Trichosanthin is a ribosome-inactivating protein from root tubers of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim. In this paper, the mechanism of action of trichosanthin on eukaryotic ribosomes was studied. A fragment of about 450 nucleotides was released from 28S ribosomal RNA after treatment of rat liver ribosome with trichosanthin and its isolated ribosomal RNAs were treated with aniline. Analysis of nucleotide sequence of 5' terminus of this fragment revealed that the aniline-sensitive site of the phosphodiester bond was between positions A4324 and G4325 in the 28S rRNA. Adenine was recovered by ion-exchange column chromatography from the 50% ethanol soluble fraction of the reaction mixture in which rat liver ribosomes were treated with trichosanthin. Thin-layer chromatographic analysis indicated that 1 mol of adenine was released from 1 mol of ribosomes. When the ribosomes were incubated with trichosanthin in the presence of inorganic [32P]phosphate, little incorporation of radioactivity into 28S rRNA was observed, indicating that the release of adenine was not mediated by phosphorolysis. These results demonstrate that trichosanthin inactivates the ribosomes by cleaving the N-C glycosidic bond of adenylic acid at 4324 of 28S rRNA in a hydrolytic fashion.

Abstract
The electric field distribution and complex propagation constants of a multimode dielectric optical waveguide with complex index of refraction were calculated. A waveguide with a similar structure was fabricated by ion exchange into a glass substrate. The complex index of refraction region was provided by flowing a dye solution over the waveguide surface. Optical gain as high as 40%/cm was obtained. An experimental determination of the gain of various propagating modes was made and found to be in good agreement with theoretically calculated values.

Abstract
The effects of intraventricular injection (ICV) of oxytocin (OT) and antioxytocin serum (AOTS) on the pain threshold and electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia in rats were investigated in this study. The potassium iontophoresis induced tailflick was used to measure the pain threshold. An increase of 20-38% in the pain threshold was observed within 80 min after OT injection (50 ng), while the OT administration (50 ng) in combination with EA produced a dramatic increase of 139-234% in the pain threshold, which was much higher than that in the saline-EA group (P less than 0.05 or 0.01). The OT effect was dose-related in the range between 25-100 ng. Although ICV of AOTS did not change the pain threshold, the EA analgesia became weakened significantly. After injection of AOTS, EA only produced an increase of 47-61% in the pain threshold, while following ICV injection of normal rabbit serum instead of AOTS the EA could cause a rise of 104-123% in the pain threshold. There was a significantly statistical difference between the above two groups (P less than 0.05-0.01). The data indicate that ICV of OT not only elevates the pain threshold, but also enhances the EA effect, and that AOTS attenuates the EA analgesia. These results suggest that endogenous oxytocin in the central nervous system may play a role in the electroacupuncture analgesia.

Abstract
Beta-microseminoprotein (MSP) is a small protein (94 amino acids) synthesized by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland and secreted into the seminal plasma. Restriction endonuclease mapping of human genomic DNA with a human MSP cDNA probe identified a 19 kilobase (Kb) hybridizing band in both EcoRI and BamHI digestions. Subsequently, the 19 Kb EcoRI fragment of human genomic DNA containing the MSP gene was isolated and cloned into an EMBL4 phage vector. Screening of the recombinant phages resulted in the isolation of one clone containing the MSP gene. Restriction endonuclease mapping and sequence analysis of this clone revealed the human MSP gene of approximately 15 Kb in length. The gene contains four exons and three large introns of approximately 6, 1, and 7 Kb.

The coefficient of thermal expansion of specimens from 60 freshly extracted human teeth were measured over the range 10-80 degrees C using a dilatometer. The coefficient increased rapidly above 50 degrees C, but there was no significant variation with tooth age between 10 and 70 years. The average values obtained were 16.96 (SD 3.83) x 10(-6)/degrees C for enamel, 10.59 (SD 2.38) x 10(-6)/degrees C for dentine, 11.90 (SD 4.42) x 10(-6)/degrees C for crowns and 9.44 (SD 0.61) x 10(-6)/degrees C for roots.

Abstract
The present study attempts to search the mechanism with which Zusanli regulates the gastrointestinal function by using radioimmunoassay to measure the contents of immunoreactive beta-endorphin (ir-beta-Ep) in gastrointestine, anterior lobe of the pituitary and plasma of the rats after electro-acupuncture of Zusanli. The findings showed that the contents of ir-beta-Ep in the gastroparietal mucous membrane, pyloric mucous membrane, duodenum, jejunum and ileum were significantly elevated 30 min after electro-acupuncture of Zusanli. But the contents of ir-beta-Ep in the anterior lobe of the pituitary and plasma were not changed. These results suggested that it may be through the endogenous opiate peptides in gastrointestine that Zusanli regulates the function of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
The changes in endogenous superoxide dismutase (ESOD) during myocardial ischemia and reperfusion and the efficacy of oxygen free radical scavengers in myocardial protection were investigated in an isolated heart model connected with the recirculating nonpulsatile perfusion circuit. Subjected to a 2-hour period of global ischemia (27 C), the heart was reperfused with 37 C oxygen diluted auto-blood for 60 minutes. Superoxide dismutase plus catalase was added into the cardioplegic solution and reperfusates. ESOD activity was measured by pyrogallol method. The results of the experiment showed that ESOD activity after ischemia and reperfusion was decreased and the addition of oxygen free radical scavengers (SOD and CAT) to the cardioplegic solution and the reperfusates greatly reduced the leakage of myocardial enzymes, coronary vascular resistance, and the ultrastructural damages of the myocardium. These results suggest that the use of SOD and CAT may inhibit myocardial reperfusion injury by scavenging oxygen-derived free radicals.

Abstract
Using complementary DNAs of human insulin-like growth factors as probes, expressions of the insulin-like growth factors I and II mRNA were examined in seven human hepatoma tissues and their adjacent nontumorous livers. The level of insulin-like growth factor I mRNA in hepatoma was lower than that in the nontumorous liver control. This phenomenon was probably caused by the low expression of human growth hormone receptor in hepatoma tissues. The levels of insulin-like growth factor II mRNA vary among hepatomas. Some show elevated expression; some have diminished expression compared to their nontumorous liver counterparts. In four of the seven hepatomas, expression of fetal forms of insulin-like growth factor II transcripts was observed and may represent dedifferentiation of insulin-like growth factor II expression during hepatocarcinogenesis.

Abstract
Sequence analysis of the human retinoblastoma gene cDNA revealed the presence of repeated elements in the form of direct repeats, inverted repeats and dyad symmetries. The clustering of the dyad symmetrical elements in some exons, #16 and #17, coincides with the hot spots for structural aberrations of the RB-1 locus previously observed in tumors. The RB-1 gene is divided into at least 27 exons distributed over 200 kbp. Three potential Sp1 binding sites are presented within 600 bp upstream of the translation start site. A DNA fragment containing these Sp1 sites ligated to a promotorless CAT gene can promote its transcription in transfected cell culture.

Abstract
The complete nucleotide sequence of Cycas revoluta Thunb chloroplast 5 S rRNA was determined. It consists of 122 nucleotides. This is the only known 5 S rRNA sequence in Gymnospermae. It is highly homologous with chloroplast 5 S rRNA of higher plants (92-97%), but less homologous (about 54%) with those of lower plants. There is however 67% homology between Cycas and a procaryote a. nidulans. The chloroplast 5 S rRNAs of Angiospermae are nearly identical with each other (95-97%). S. oligorhize and L. minor have 100% homology among themselves. We have constructed a phylogenic tree of 5 S rRNA sequences from fifteen plant chloroplasts. The result suggests that the emergence of algae occurred at an early stage of plant chloroplast evolution and that green plants originated from green algae. This is in agreement with the classical view and other theories of molecular evolution. However there is no common ancestor in the case of Bryophyta and ferns. Among the Angiospermae, a precise evolutionary process cannot be deduced because the Knuc values among the species are very close to each other.

Abstract
A simple and rapid solid-phase RNA sequencing method has been developed based on Peattie's direct chemical method. 3'-Terminally labeled RNA was immobilized on DEAE-cellulose sheets and followed by specific modification with dimethyl sulfate, diethylpyrocarbonate, hydroxylamine (at pH 10 for the uridine and pH 5.5 for the cytidine reaction), and cleavage reaction with aniline. RNA fragments were washed from the DEAE-cellulose sheets using salt solutions, precipitated with ethanol, and separated by 15% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Due to the complete removal of the impurities normally present in the solution method, the higher resolution of the sequencing bands and lower background on the autoradiograph make this solid-phase technique more efficient. This solid-phase technique is much faster and more convenient than the original method.

Abstract
Diethyl pyrocarbonate reactivity and thermal denaturation were used to probe potential ribosomal interactions between tRNA and the small 5.8S and 5S rRNAs. Puromycin, an analogue of the terminal aminoacyl-adenosine portion of aminoacyl-tRNA, was observed to increase the accessibility of the 5.8S rRNA, including the highly conserved GAACp sequences. EDTA which releases both tRNA and the 5S rRNA-protein complex resulted in an even greater accessibility in the 5.8S rRNA. The thermal dissociation of whole ribosomes resulted in the release of all three RNAs, with a striking similarity in the denaturation profiles. These results strongly suggest an interdependence in the ribosome-associated structures of the small rRNAs and provide in situ evidence for the various 5S rRNA, 5.8S rRNA, and tRNA containing ribonucleoprotein complexes previously reconstituted through affinity chromatography.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic effects of two doses of norethisterone (5mg and 3mg) used as a 'visiting pill' were investigated. There were no significant differences in the pharmacokinetics of the two doses except for the peak concentration achieved and the bioavailability as assessed by the area under the serum norethisterone concentration - time curve. Both doses were rapidly absorbed. Pharmacodynamic effects were minor. No change occurred in serum concentrations of total cholesterol, total triglycerides or HDL-cholesterol. The area under the serum glucose concentration--time curve and particularly the area under the serum insulin concentration--time curve were significantly increased as a result of treatment but no change occurred in the serum levels of glycosylated haemoglobin. SHBG concentrations in serum decreased on treatment whereas those of ceruloplasmin increased.

Abstract
Seventy-seven patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx were treated by preoperative radiation therapy (4000-5000 rad) followed by surgical resection. The original biopsy specimens were evaluated for degree of keratinization, nuclear pleomorphism, frequency of mitoses, inflammatory response, vascular invasion, and pattern of invasion. Multivariant analysis (Cox regression model) and life table survival function were used to determine the relative contributions of the clinical and histologic parameters to patient outcome. The results were as follows: (1) large tumor size, nodal metastases, and male sex were found to be predictive of a poorer survival (P = 0.004, 0.0167, and 0.0237, respectively); and (2) an analysis of a combination of clinical and histologic parameters demonstrated that the pattern of invasion was the only histologic factor that was predictive of survival (P = 0.0436). Neoplasms invading as large cohesive aggregates indicated a better prognosis than neoplasms invading as thin, irregular cords or individual cells. Restricting the statistical evaluation to only histologic factors (excluding clinical factors) demonstrated that increased frequency of mitoses also correlated with poor survival (P = 0.0218). Further restriction of the analysis to T2 and T3 neoplasms that have similar survival times indicated that both frequency of mitoses and pattern of invasion were of prognostic value in predicting survival (P = 0.0127 and 0.0168, respectively).

Abstract
The abrasion responses were tested on four acrylic veneer materials, K + B Plus, K + B 75, Isosit, and Ivocron. The studies were performed in two independent research laboratories. Two different brushing machines were used with an abrasive slurry. The results were used for comparing the degree of abrasion for the resin materials. Three analytical methods of measuring the degree of abrasive wear were used: surface profile measurement, microscopic evaluation, and measurement of loss of volume. Abstract
Phycocyanin (PC) is a light-harvesting protein common to blue-green and red algae. We have isolated the genes for the two apoprotein subunits, alpha and beta, of PC from the blue-green alga Agmenellum quadruplicatum PR-6. We synthesized eight sense-strand tetradecameric oligonucleotide probes that could encode a particular pentapeptide in PC alpha from A. quadruplicatum. Only one probe hybridized with total RNA from this organism. This oligonucleotide showed homology to a unique restriction fragment when used to probe Southern blots of A. quadruplicatum DNA. The probe-homologous 3.1-kilobase pair HindIII fragment was cloned. The nucleotide sequence of a 1.7-kilobase pair segment of this clone was determined. Two open reading frames are contained in this region, which correspond in deduced amino acid sequence to PC alpha and PC beta subunits. Both coding sequences are in the same orientation, separated by 105 base pairs, with the PC beta gene 5' to the PC alpha gene. Each gene has a Shine-Dalgarno-type sequence near the initiation codon. Codon frequencies in the two genes may be correlated with the abundance of their products. The deduced amino acid sequences of the gene products show considerable homology with the alpha and beta PC subunits from other species.

Abstract
A 453-base pair DNA duplex consisting of a gene coding for human interferon-gamma and initiation and termination signals plus appropriate restriction enzyme sites for plasmid insertion has been totally synthesized. The synthesis involved preparation of 66 oligodeoxynucleotides by a modified, solid phase phosphite procedure and enzymatic ligation of the oligonucleotides. The gene, when inserted into a previously constructed expression vector, was expressed in Escherichia coli, demonstrating functional activity for the synthetic gene. Several strategically located restriction cleavage sites have been introduced into the sequence. This provides a convenient system for site-specific mutagenesis for structure-function studies.

Abstract
The genes for the classical transplantation antigens are unique in that they belong to a multigene family of which each member is represented by a large number of alleles. Since all of these genes are highly related in sequence, it has been difficult to study the expression of individual members of this complex gene family. Based upon our initial suggestion that the 3' noncoding regions of these genes may be useful in identifying mRNA molecules transcribed from different loci, we have compared a large number of sequences from different inbred mouse strains and have been able to assign each of these sequences without ambiguity into distinct allelic series. Such accurate assignment has afforded the opportunity to compare the coding regions of these highly homologous genes and has led to the identification of sequences which are apparently unique to specific genes in the family. Synthetic oligonucleotides corresponding to each of the locus-specific unique regions have been used successfully to type a panel of cDNA sequences, as well as to quantitate the relative amounts of mRNA transcribed from distinct loci. The availability of these specific coding probes will allow the analysis of individual genes and their specific expression without interference from other highly homologous sequences in this multigene family.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of the 5S rRNA from a mushroom, Coprinus cinereus, was determined to be: (sequence in text). This sequence is consistent with current models for the secondary structure of 5S RNAs and indicates a very high degree of sequence conservation among the most highly evolved fungi. Sequence heterogeneity was not evident in this fungus suggesting that the more highly evolved fungi may not contain the dispersed pattern of 5S rRNA genes which have been observed in intermediate fungi such as Neurospora.

Abstract
Fibrous dysplasia of bones comprising the paranasal sinuses is well recognized. Depending on the anatomic areas of the skull involved by this neoplasm, a combined approach for surgical removal may be necessitated. A case of a patient with fibrous dysplasia of the ethmoid sinus, possibly the first reported case of such change in the ethmoid bone itself, is presented. A two-stage, combined otolaryngologicneurosurgical craniofacial resection was the method of treatment.

Abstract
For testing biological response of newborn Taiwan monkeys to infection of human adenovirus type 12 (Ad12) and simian virus 40 (SV40), 40 newborn Taiwan monkeys were inoculated with Ad12, Ad12, plus SV40, Ad12 supplemented with Ad12-induced hamster tumor tissue (Ad12 tumor) or control specimens (HeLa or African green monkey kidney cell lysate). Among them 26 survived including 8 newborn monkeys inoculated with control specimens. The survivors were observed for 4 years but no tumor was produced. The increase of body weight and intake of calories and protein in each test group during the first 12 wk were similar to those of corresponding control groups. Intrapulmonary inoculation of 108.2TCD50 of Ad12 with additional subcutaneous dose of Ad12 (108.8TCD50), Ad12 plus SV40 (108TCD50) or Ad12 plus Ad12 tumor killed 78% of newborn monkeys (7 of 9) in 18 days. The newborn could stand subcutaneous inoculation of SV40 (108TCD50) with 1 dose of Ad12 (108.8TCD50) or 3 doses of Ad12 (108.5, 108.5 and 108.2TCD50) at 24-hr intervals. When 108.8TCD50 or more Ad12 were inoculated, the virus could be isolated as late as 44 and 26 days from rectal and throat swab specimens respectively. The Ad12 neutralizing antibody in baby monkeys inoculated with multiple doses of Ad12 persisted, in low titer, longer than those injected with single high doses of Ad12, but anti-Ad12 T (tumor) antibody disappeared by 35 wk in both groups. Although SV40 antibody response was better than Ad12 antibody response in baby Taiwan monkeys, pre-infection of SV40 did not potentiate the production of anti-Ad12 T antibody.
