Harnessing the composition of dissolved organic matter in lagoon sediment in association with rare earth elements using fluorescence and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy

Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) plays a pivotal role in influencing metal binding and mobility within lagoon sediments. However, there exists a gap in understanding the compositional alterations of DOM concerning Rare Earth Elements (REEs) across varying pollution gradients. This study aimed to characterize DOM and examine its relationship with REEs in sediment cores from different pollution levels in Yundang Lagoon, China using excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The results raveled four distinct fluorescent components. Among these, two correspond to humic-like substances, while the remaining two are attributed to protein-like substances. Remarkably, the prevalence of protein-like compounds was observed to exceed 58% of the total fluorescence intensity across all the investigated sites. Furthermore, a substantial discrepancy in total fluorescence intensity was detected between the Songbai Lake and the Inner and Outer Lagoon, indicating a variance in DOM content. In terms of REEs, the average concentration of total REEs was notably elevated within the Songbai Lake sediments (318.36 mg/kg) as compared to the Inner and Outer Lagoon sediments (296.36 and 278.05 mg/kg, respectively). Of significance is the enrichment of Light Rare Earth Elements (LREEs), particularly Ce, La, Pr, and Nd, over Heavy REEs (HREEs) across all surveyed locations. Intriguingly, a coherent trend emerged wherein the fluorescence intensity and LREE concentrations exhibited a synchronized increase from Outer to Inner to Songbai Lake core sediments. This observation substantiates a strong correlation between DOM content and pollution levels (p < 0.05). By shedding light on the intricate interplay between DOM and REEs within urban aquatic sediments, this study imparts novel insights which enrich our comprehension of urban environmental dynamics.

Foliar spraying of lanthanum activates endocytosis in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) root cells, increasing Cd and Pb accumulation and their bioaccessibility

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) accumulate easily in leafy vegetables and can harm human health. Lanthanum (La) have been used to improve agricultural yield and quality, but the effect of La application on Cd/Pb enrichment in leafy vegetables remains incomplete currently. A previous study reported that the endocytosis in lettuce leaf cells can be activated by La, leading to an increase in Pb accumulation in lettuce leaves. However, it has not been investigated whether foliar application of La enhances root cellular endocytosis and promotes its uptake of Cd and Pb. In this study, the influence of La on the uptake of Cd and Pb, Cd bioaccessibility, and the safety risks of cultivating lettuce under Cd and Pb stress were explored. It was found that La increased Cd (16-30 % in shoot, 16-34 % in root) and Pb (25-29 % in shoot, 17-23 % in root) accumulation in lettuce. The increased accumulation of Cd and Pb could be attributed to La-enhanced endocytosis. Meanwhile, La enhanced the toxicity of both Cd and Pb, inhibited lettuce growth, and aggravated the damage to the photosynthetic and antioxidant systems. Finally, gastrointestinal simulation experiments showed that La increased the Cd bioaccessibility in both gastric and intestinal phase by 7-108 % and 9-87 %, respectively. These results offer valuable insights into the safety of REEs for agricultural applications.

Co-cropping vetiver grass and legume for the phytoremediation of an acid mine drainage (AMD) impacted soil

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a form of environmental pollution from mining activity that can negatively affect soil environments by acidification, salinisation, and metal(loid) contamination. The use of plants to remediate (phytoremediation) these impacted environments while generating plant-based value is a promising approach to more accessible and cost-benefiting restoration of post-mining, marginal lands. In this study, a 3-month growth-chamber pot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of co-cropping two plant species, Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver grass) and the legume Medicago truncatula (barrel clover) with a wheat straw biochar amendment on the phytostabilisation of metal(loid)s Cr, Zn, and As and the phytoextraction of rare earth element (REE) in an AMD impacted soil from a gold mining region in South Africa. The results showed that co-cropping with vetiver significantly lowered the legume's Cr, Zn, and As root contents by 80%, 32% and 54%, respectively, and improved the plant's overall metal(loid) tolerance by increasing its translocation from root to shoot tissue. The biochar further inhibited root uptake of Cr and Zn, by 71% and 36%, and increased the legume biomass by 40%. Both plant species and cropping treatments exhibited low REE extraction capabilities by shoot tissue, which accounted for less than 0.2% of total soil REE contents. The study shows that co-cropping with vetiver and biochar amendment are effective tools for the phytoremediation of AMD impacted soil mainly by lowering plant uptake and improving plant metal(loid) tolerance. Likely mechanisms at play include the alteration of rhizosphere chemistry and species-specific physiological and molecular responses. These effects offer support for the phytostabilisation of AMD impacted soil with the generation of plant-based value through dual (and safe) cultivation (phytoprotection) rather than through REE recovery from plant biomass (phytoextraction). These techniques could allow for the simultaneous restoration of post-mining, mining-impacted and marginal lands with agricultural production.

Analysis of element yield, bacterial community structure and the impact of carbon sources for bioleaching rare earth elements from high grade monazite

Rare earth element (REE) recovery from waste streams, mine tailings or recyclable components using bioleaching is gaining traction due to the shortage and security of REE supply as well as the environmental problems that occur from processing and refining. Four heterotrophic microbial species with known phosphate solubilizing capabilities were evaluated for their ability to leach REE from a high-grade monazite when provided with either galactose, fructose or maltose. Supplying fructose resulted in the greatest amount of REE leached from the ore due to the largest amount of organic acid produced. Gluconic acid was the dominant organic acid identified produced by the cultures, followed by acetic acid. The monazite proved difficult to leach with the different carbon sources, with preferential release of Ce over La, Nd and Pr.

Rare earth elements as tracers of iron ore tailings on the Brazilian eastern continental shelf

Iron ore tailings are stored in large dams and pose risks to the environment around the world. In Brazil, the rupture of these dams has become frequent and has generated environmental and social concern. Rare earth elements are good tracers of sediment sources and our results indicated chronic contamination of the seabed sediment from the marine region affected by the Fundão Dam tailings since 2015, including areas of environmental protection. This research, carried out between November 2018 and September 2021, with a database of 575 samples, showed a greater amount of contaminated material in the marine region adjacent to the Doce River mouth. Although data suggest prior mining contamination of the Doce River basin, the Fundão episode was an empirical and massive example of the environmental damage caused by these human activities over the centuries, showing that the impact remains in the shallow marine environments for years. The association between levels of samarium, hafnium, tungsten and rhenium in seminal plasma and the risk of idiopathic oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia in men of childbearing age

Oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT) is a global public health problem, which affects 30% men of childbearing age. Meanwhile, with the rapid development of industry and economy, the contents of rare earth elements (REEs) in the environment are increasing. However, little is known about the associations between REEs levels and OAT risk. To evaluate the associations between the levels of four REEs (samarium (Sm), hafnium (Hf), tungsten (W), rhenium (Re)) in seminal plasma and OAT risk, from October 2021 to November 2022, semen samples from 924 men of childbearing age (460 controls and 464 cases) were collected from the reproductive center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the levels of Sm, Hf, Re and W in seminal plasma. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was conducted to explore the joint effects of levels of four REEs in seminal plasma on the risk of OAT and select the one exerting a major role; generalized linear regression models (GLM) with log link function were employed to investigate the association of every REE level in seminal plasma and OAT risk; sankey diagram and linear regression models were utilized to describe the associations between the levels of four REEs and the indexes of sperm quality. The levels of four REEs in seminal plasma were higher in the case group than levels in the control group (pSm = 0.011, pHf = 0.040, pW = 0.062, pRe = 0.001, respectively). In BKMR analysis, the OAT risk increased when the overall levels of four REEs were higher than their 55th percentile compared to all of them at their 50th percentile, and Re level played a major role in the association. Additionally, Re level in seminal plasma was positively associated with  the OAT risk in the single element model after adjustment of covariates (medium vs. low: OR (95% CI) = 1.55 (1.10, 2.18); high vs. low: OR (95% CI) = 1.69 (1.18, 2.42)). Lastly, the sankey diagram and linear regression models revealed that Sm level was negatively associated with the PR%, total sperm count and total progressively motile sperm count; Hf level was negatively associated with the PR%; W and Re levels were negatively associated with the PR% and total motility, and Re level was positively associated with abnormal morphology rate. Men of childbearing age with OAT had higher levels of Sm, Hf and Re in seminal plasma than those in the control group. An increasing trend for the OAT risk was observed with an increase in mixture levels of Sm, Hf, W and Re, and Re exposure level played a major role in the association whether in BKMR model or single element model. Additionally, the levels of these four REEs were negatively associated with the indexes of sperm quality.

Biocomposite based on graphene oxide immobilized Pseudomonas psychrotolerans for the recovery of Y(III) in acid mine drainage

Rare earth elements (REEs) recovery is a critical issue concerning both resource recovery and wastewater utilization. In this study, a new bio-composite was fabricated using graphene oxide immobilized Pseudomonas psychrotolerans (PP@GO), which was isolated from the soil of REEs mine. Results showed that 99.6% Y(III) was removed in 48 h and various characterization confirmed that S-S, -NH2, HPO42-, -OH and -COOH from extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by microorganisms formed complexation with Y(III). As well, the Y(III) adsorption best followed Freundlich isotherm and non-linear pseudo-second-order kinetic model having R2 of 0.985 and 0.996, respectively, demonstrating that the adsorption was governed by multilayered chemisorption. Additionally, the effectiveness of PP@GO was not limited to Y(III), where 27.9% of this substance was removed in acid mine drainage (AMD), also exhibited great adsorption for other REEs, such as Er (45.0%) and Ho (43.8%). Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency of Y(III) remained high (70.0%) after a 5th cycle, emphasizing the consistent stability of PP@GO. Finally, REEs adsorbed could be greatly desorbed by KNO3, like Sm (80.1%) and La (80.0%), which revealed that PP@GO has great potential to recover REEs in AMD. Overall, this study offers a promising strategy for the green and sustainable REEs recovery and wastewater treatment.

Variability of rare earth and heavy metal elements in a representative alluvial depositional system

Heavy metals (Ni, Cr, W, Cd, and Pb) and rare earth elements (REE) were investigated in the flood plain sediments of an island of the lower Yangtze River near Nanjing to determine how the vertical distribution of heavy metals could be affected by natural sedimentation processes and anthropogenic contamination. Stratigraphic analyses of magnetic susceptibility and the mean grain size distribution of the deposits enabled us to identify layers associated with a relatively high influx of suspended sediments that resulted in sudden changes in the concentrations of heavy metals. The results show that layers associated with high sediment influx (0.8 m depth) displayed low concentrations of Cr, Ni, W, and Cd that were mainly lithogenic in origin. The Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) normalized REE patterns in the flood plain cores were enrichment in Ce and Eu relative to PAAS, indicating that the sediments were most likely derived from a mixture of sediments and not from an anthropogenic source. Sharp increases in Y/Ho ratios, as well as heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Ni, and W) and Y concentrations were observed in the uppermost layer that could have been deposited from the rapid transport of sediment-laden, contaminated waters. The temporal (vertical) trends in Pb concentrations may be strongly influenced by coal burning. Elevated Pb concentrations (350 ppm and 1000 ppm) correlate with high magnetic susceptibility (> 200 m3 × kg-1) and the history of thermal power plant (1910-2002) activity. The anthropogenic inputs of Pb were, however, not diluted by high suspended sediment loads, which supports the argument that Pb was derived from fly ash.

Insights from distribution and fractionation of the rare earth elements into As enrichment in the Singe Tsangpo River Basin

The geogenic As enrichment occurs extensively in the major river basin from the Tibetan Plateau, while the knowledge involved with the underlying mechanisms is far from completion. The present study utilized the geochemical behaviors of rare earth elements (REE) to study the hydrogeochemical evolution and As enrichment in the Singe Tsnagpo River basin, a typical As-rich river basin in the Tibetan Plateau. The river water was characterized by significant positive Eu anomalies and slight negative Ce anomalies, indicating the hydrogeochemical control of oxidative weathering of sourcing rocks and the contribution of felsic rocks. The PHREEQC modeling results suggested that the carbonate weathering contributed to the complexation of REE in the river water, where REE(CO3)+ and REE(CO3)2- were the predominant complex species. Besides, the reversing scenarios of HREE/LREE enrichment in the river water/sediments suggested a critical control of iron (hydr)oxides on the REE fractionation due to the preferential adsorption of LREE compared with HREE. Interestingly, the variations in Y/Ni and Cr/V ratios from the river sediments suggested a different contribution of sourcing rock weathering along the river flow path, where ultramafic rock showed a substantial contribution to the river sediments in the lower reaches and granite source is predominant in the upper reaches. It was also notable that the concurrent enrichment of REE and As in the river waters showed a response to the substantial enhancement of chemical weathering in the upper reaches of the STR basin, which was evidenced by the corresponding increases in the electrical conductivity and the δ18O values in the river waters. The present study thus provides new insights into utilizing REE as environmental tracers for studying hydrogeochemical evolution and As enrichment in the STR basin, which could also apply to similar alpine arid and cold river basins.

Accumulation, translocation, and fractionation of rare earth elements (REEs) in fern species of hyperaccumulators and non-hyperaccumulators growing in urban areas

The issue of ion-adsorption type rare earth deposits (IADs) in urban areas of South China has garnered significant attention due to its environmental implications. Hyperaccumulator-based phytoremediation is a potentially effective solution for reducing the environmental impact of IADs in urban areas, particularly using ferns as they are known to be REE hyperaccumulators. However, the ability of different fern species to accumulate REEs in urban areas remains unknown. In this study, four fern species, including known hyperaccumulators (Dicranopteris linearis and Blechnum orientale) and other ferns (Pteris ensiformis and Cibotium barometz), were studied to investigate their REE accumulation abilities in the Guangzhou urban area. The aboveground parts of Dicranopteris linearis (848.7 μg g-1) and Blechum orientale (1046.8 μg g-1) have been found to accumulate high concentrations of REEs, demonstrating they probably can be applied for phytoremediation in the natural environments. Despite having lower REE concentrations than REE hyperaccumulators, Pteris ensiformis and Cibotium barometz still probably have the function as phytostabilizers in urban areas, as REEs can be enriched in their roots beyond the normal levels of plants. The enrichment of REEs in ferns is influenced by the availability of various nutrients (K, Ca, Fe, and P), which probably can be associated with different growth processes. The four fern species show LREE enrichment, moderate Eu anomalies and different Ce anomalies. It is difficult to absorb and transfer Ce to the aboveground parts of Blechnum orientale and Cibotium barometz. The study also identified selective enrichment of Ce in Pteris ensiformis, which has potential for comprehensive extraction of REEs when combined with other REE hyperaccumulators. REE fractionations are probably determined by the specific characteristics of different fern parts. Overall, these findings provide insights for addressing potential environmental problems related to IADs and offer guidelines for phytoremediation technology in addressing high REE levels in urban areas.

Geochemical characteristics and migration patterns of rare earth elements in coal mining subsidence lakes under the influence of multiple factors

Mining activities cause surface subsidence and the formation of subsidence lakes, which dynamically change with the continuous coal mining activities. Under the combined influence of various human activities such as agriculture, aquaculture, and floating photovoltaic (FPV), the lake environment undergoes continuous changes, thereby altering the geochemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in the sediment. This study focused on the subsidence lakes in the Huainan coalfield in eastern China to examine the REEs content in the sediment, elucidated the temporal variations and geochemical characteristics of REEs distribution, explored the main controlling factors of REEs in the sediment, and revealed the migration and transformation behavior of REEs during dynamic subsidence processes. The study revealed that the migration pattern of REEs in the sediment was closely related to the duration of subsidence. The average content of REEs in lake sediments with subsidence duration <5 years increased from 219 μg·g-1 to 248 μg·g-1 compared to the soil, showing an enrichment model primarily driven by rainwater runoff, groundwater input retention, and mineral dissolution. With further subsidence, the processes of reduction dissolution of Fe-Mn oxides/hydroxides, organic colloid adsorption, and hydraulic disturbance gradually replaced the aforementioned enrichment behavior as the main migration pathways, resulting in a decrease in the average REEs content in the sediment to 179 μg·g-1 for subsidence durations exceeding 10 years. There was no strong correlation between REEs fractionation and subsidence duration. Artificial activities, such as FPV, are important factors causing Cerium and Erbium anomalies in some subsidence lake sediments. This study was not only of significant importance for understanding the migration, distribution, and environmental behavior of pollutants in aquatic environments under the interference of human activities but also provided a solid theoretical foundation for the future management of coal mining subsidence lakes.

Separation of rare earth element radioisotopes by reverse-phase high-speed counter-current chromatography

Analytical scale purification of rare earth element (REE) radioisotopes is typically accomplished using cation-exchange resins (e.g. AG 50W-X8) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Despite the variety of improvements made since the development of this separation process in the 1950s, nearest neighbor separations remain a challenge, as does the issue of irreversible sample adsorption. Herein, we report a study that evaluates the potential of high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) as an alternative method for purifying REE elements, with specific reference to separations of fission product REE of interest to nuclear forensics. Complementary HSCCC REE separation experiments, one spiked with radiotracer and REE fission product activity, allowed for in depth analysis of resulting fractions from both an elemental (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, ICP-AES) and radiological (gamma-ray spectrometry, beta counting) purity perspective. The highly reproducible nature of separation profiles generated from HSCCC instruments was leveraged to simplify work-up of samples containing radioisotopes. Subsequent radioanalytical evaluation revealed minimal carryover of Eu into neighboring Sm and Tb fractions (as indicated by presence of 150Eu), and trace contamination of the Tb fraction with Y (as indicated by presence of 91Y). Subtle differences in stationary phase retention across the two columns were reflected in significant variations in decontamination factors of duplicate parallel separations. These differences paired with obtained distribution of radioisotopes provided valuable insights into future improvements. Collectively, this study represents a significant step forward in development of HSCCC technology for task specific REE radioisotope purification.

Tracing provenance of eolian sands in the northern Ulan Buh Desert, China: Evidence from the REE geochemical characteristics

Desertification is a primary threat to crop farming, the livestock industry, and the eco-environment in northwestern China. Through field research and satellite imagery, it has been discovered that there are 4-5 sand belts in the shape of handclasps connecting major deserts in the Alxa Plateau region of northern China. These sand belts have been expanding for several decades. However, eolian sand transport between major deserts through these expanding sand belts is still underestimated. Identifying the source areas of eolian sands in deserts provide essential knowledge to prevent desertification. In this study, we collected samples from the northern Ulan Buh Desert (UBD), the Yamalik Desert (YD), and the Langshan Mountains and analyzed their REE contents in the <125 μm fraction. We compared REE geochemical characteristics of fine-grained sands in the UBD with other recently published REE data for potential source areas. Our findings indicate that the primary origins of fine-grained sands in the northern UBD are from the Qilian Mountains (QM) and Badain Jaran Desert (BJD), which are transported through the YD. Contributions from the Gobi-Altay Mountains to the north are relatively minor. The Langshan Mountains and Hawula Mountains are not considered as the primary sources of fine-grained sands in the UBD. In contrast, surface sediments in the southern UBD have a local mixture of the paleo-lacustrine deposits, the Gobi sediments, and minor external inputs from the BJD and QM. Our findings demonstrate that sand belts connecting these deserts play a crucial role in the eolian transport of fine-grained sands. Therefore, both the Chinese government and scientists should pay close attention to them in future efforts to combat desertification.

Recovery of Ce and La from phosphogypsum leachate by adsorption using grape wastes

The present research aimed to evaluate the use of grape stalk in the adsorption of lanthanum and cerium to identify the best operating conditions enabling the application of the bioadsorbent in REEs leached from phosphogypsum. The grape stalk was characterized and showed an amorphous structure with a heterogeneous and very porous surface. Also, it was possible to identify the groups corresponding to carboxylic acids, phenols, alcohols, aliphatic acids, and aromatic rings. The pH effect study showed that the adsorption process of La3+ and Ce3+ ions was favored at pH 5.0. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. In just 20 min, 80% saturation was reached, while equilibrium was reached after 120 min. The adsorption isotherms were appropriately adjusted to the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacities were obtained at 298 K, which were 35.22 mg g-1 for La3+ and 37.99 mg g-1 for Ce3+. Furthermore, the adsorption process was favorable, spontaneous, and exothermic. In the study's second phase, phosphogypsum was leached with a sulfuric acid solution. Then, the adsorption of REEs was carried out under the experimental conditions of pH after leaching and pH 5.0 (adjustment carried out with sodium hydroxide solution) at 298 K for 120 min and with adsorbent dosages of 1 and 5 g L-1. This process resulted in removal percentages above 95% for the most abundant REEs, such as neodymium, lanthanum, and cerium, at pH 5.0 and a dosage of 5 g L-1, demonstrating the effectiveness of the bioadsorbent used. These results indicate the potential of using grape residue as a promising bioadsorbent in recovering rare earth elements from phosphogypsum leachate.

Analysis of enrichment, correlation, and leaching patterns of rare earth elements in coal fly ash assisted by statistical measures

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a typical industrial solid waste, which has recently been reported to contain rare earth elements (REEs). REEs are important materials in many industrial fields. Therefore, extracting REEs from CFA becomes a win-win strategy to both make full use of CFA and reclaim REEs. However, the stable crystalline structure of CFA is hard to break, which limits the extraction of REEs. The inter-correlation and the leaching patterns of the REEs in CFA also remain unclear. In this work, REEs were enriched by desilication, and the correlation and the influences of multiple acids of the leached REEs were investigated. It was found that desilication could increase the leachable amount of REEs from 137.37 ppm to 346.12 ppm. The light rare earth elements (LREEs) were less inter-correlated than heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and desilication enhanced the leaching of LREEs more than that of HREEs. The ratio and type of the leaching acids both influenced the extraction of REEs from CFA: HCl and HF played important roles in the extraction from the untreated CFA while HNO3 and HF were more decisive for the desilicated CFA. In addition, we used statistical analysis to quantificationally confirm that desilication and acids both significantly influenced the extraction of REEs. This work provides evidence for the enrichment of REEs in CFA and acid choosing when leaching REEs from CFA.

High-resolution temporal monitoring of rare earth elements in acidic drainages from an abandoned sulphide mine (iberian pyrite belt, Spain)

Rare earth elements (REE) are strategic elements due to their economic importance. However, the studies dedicated to the distribution and behaviour of REE in aquatic systems have been scarce until a few decades ago. This work studies the seasonal variations of REE concentrations in acid mine drainage (AMD) affected water courses and the factors controlling their mobility under different hydrological conditions. To address this issue, a high-resolution sampling was performed for two years in selected sampling sites. REE concentrations were very high (median values of 2.7-3.4 mg/L, maximum of 7.0 mg/L). These values are several orders of magnitude higher than those found in natural waters, highlighting the importance of AMD processes on the release of REE to the hydrosphere. No good correlations were found between pH and REE concentration, while REE correlated positively (r Spearman coefficient of 0.78-0.94) with EC and negatively (r -0.88 to -0.90) with discharge in AMD-affected streams. A conservative behaviour of REE was observed due to the strongly acidic conditions observed in the study area. The waters also showed an enrichment in MREEs over LREEs and HREEs (mean values of GdN/LaN>1.8 and YbN/GdN < 0.7), typical of AMD waters. An asymmetry in the content of LREE and HREE was observed in AMD samples studied, which could be explained by the preferential dissolution of LREE or HREE-enriched minerals within each waste heaps. Multivariate analysis suggests the influence of Mn-rich minerals existent in the study area as a potential source of LREE.

Exploitation alters microbial community and its co-occurrence patterns in ionic rare earth mining sites

The exploitation of ion-adsorption rare earth elements (REEs) deposits results in serious ecological and environmental problems, which has attracted much attention. However, the influences of exploitation on the prokaryotic communities and their complex interactions remain poorly understood. In the present study, bacterial and archaeal communities, as well as ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), in and around REEs mining area were investigated through high throughput sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Our results indicated that mining soil was characterized by poor soil structure, nutrient deficiency, and high concentrations of residual REEs. Oligotrophic bacteria (e.g., Chloroflexi and Acidobacteriota) were dominant in unexploited soil and mining soil, while copiotrophic bacteria (Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota) were more abundant in surrounding soil. Nutrient was the key factor affecting microbial variation and abundance in mining soil. The bacterial community was more sensitive to REEs, while the archaeal communities were relatively stable. As the key members for ammonia oxidation, AOA outnumbered AOB in all the soil types, and the former was significantly influenced by pH, nutrients, and TREEs in mining soil. The microbial co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that exploitation significantly influenced topological properties, decreased the complexity, and resulted in a much unstable network, leading to a more fragile microbial ecosystem in mining areas. Notably, the abundance of keystone taxa decreased after exploitation, and oligotrophic groups (Chloroflexi) replaced copiotrophic groups (Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota) as the key to rebuilt a co-occurrence network, suggesting potentially important roles in maintaining network stability. The current results are of great significance to the ecological risk assessment of REEs exploitation.

Geochemical characteristics and ecological risks of rare earth elements in river sediments of coal-grain composite area in eastern China

Coal and grain complex areas influence the geochemical characterization of REEs through coal mining activities and agricultural production. However, there is a lack of relevant studies. In this study, we investigated the geochemical characterization and risk assessment of REEs in river sediments of the northern Anhui plain, a typical coal-grain composite area. The results showed that the average concentrations of ∑REE in the sediments ranged from 134.7 to 220.3 μg/g, and LREE was significantly enriched. Among the 14 REEs, Gd and Eu were the most enriched, with enrichment factors of 1.792 and 1.764, respectively. In addition, the differences in REEs content and enrichment between different rivers were related to the location of coal mines and the degree of population concentration. The average values of δCe and δEu in the sediments were 0.990 and 1.080, respectively, and most of the sampling sites showed a weak positive Ce, Eu anomaly. The results of Pearson's correlation and RDA redundancy analyses showed that Fe, Al, Mn and sand contributed more to the enrichment of REEs. The river sediments in the whole area had a slight potential ecological risk, with Eu (Er=13.05) and Lu (Er=14.07) having the highest potential risk. The ADD results also showed that the average daily dose of REEs by children was around 2.000 (μg/(kg·day)), which was significantly higher than that of adults. The results of this study can be used as a basis for the prevention and control of REEs in rivers in northern Anhui Province.

Chemical element distribution in Arctic soils: Assessing vertical, spatial, animal and anthropogenic influences in Elsa and Ebba Valleys, Spitsbergen, Svalbard

The Arctic region is threatened by climate change and pollution caused by human activities which potentially influence the elemental concentrations available to and from the biota. To better understand this delicate balance, it is crucial to investigate the role of several factors. Therefore, we quantified the level of 43 chemical elements in soils from Elsa and Ebba Valleys, Petunia Bay, Spitsbergen, a region that has experienced lasting environmental impacts from historical mining activities. We evaluated the a) vertical sampling influence by examining the variation in element distribution between the soil upper and deeper layers, b) animal influence by verifying the role of native animals, particularly vertebrates, in introducing thought faeces elements to the soil and c) anthropogenic influence by studying the spatial geographical differences in element distribution based on the degree of human pressure between the valleys. Our analysis also includes data on soil organic matter (SOM) and mineral composition. Both valleys exhibited similar mineralogical composition, but Elsa Valley had higher concentrations of most analyzed elements compared to Ebba Valley. Despite the contribution of vertebrate feaces, no increase in element concentrations was observed in the animal-influenced soils. The sampled soil layers had similar chemical element profiles for most elements. SOM content tended to be higher in superficial soils and showed a strong positive correlation with most quantified elements. The higher concentrations in Elsa Valley reflect its past mining and mineral exploration, making this area more significantly impacted than Ebba Valley. Surprisingly, vertebrate animals do not appear to influence the concentrations of chemical elements or organic matter in soils. Our findings provide valuable insights into the legacy of past mining activities and mechanisms driving environmental change in the Arctic.

Radiation exposure and health concerns associated with the environmental geochemistry of relatively higher radioactivity in a fresh water basin

This study was carried out on a negligible anthropogenically impacted Indo-Bangla transboundary river basin (Atrai, Bangladesh) to elicit radionuclides' and elemental distributions. Thirty sediment samples were collected from the Bangladesh portion of the river, and instrumental neutron activation analysis and HPGe γ-Spectrometry techniques were used to determine environmental radionuclides (e.g., 232Th, 226Ra, 40K) and associated elemental concentrations, respectively. Metal concentrations (Sc, V, Fe, Eu, Sm, La, Yb, Ce, Lu, Ta, Hf) were determined to comprehend the genesis of greater radioactivity. Recognizing the mean concentration of absorbed gamma dose rate (158.7 hGyh-1) is 2.88-times more than the recommended value (55 hGyh-1) that describes ionizing radiation concerns regarding potential health risks to the surrounding communities and the houses of native residents, which are constructed by Atrai river sediment. This work will assist relevant policymakers in exploring valuable heavy minerals and provide information regarding radiological health risks from a fluvial system.

The translocation and fractionation of rare earth elements (REEs) via the phloem in Phytolacca americana L

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered to be emerging contaminants due to their widespread use and lack of recycling. Phytolacca americana L. has great potential for REEs phytoextraction. Our understanding of REEs in P. americana focuses mostly on root absorption and xylem translocation, but the role of phloem translocation has received little attention. In this research, the translocation and fractionation of REEs from phloem to organs in P. americana were investigated. In addition, the effect of organic acids in the REEs translocation via phloem exudates was also examined. The results showed that REEs could transport bidirectionally via the phloem, and 86% of REEs exported from old leaves could move downwards to the root, whereas only 14% of them transported upwards to the young leaves. Heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) enrichment was found in the REEs fractionation processes both from phloem to leaf and from stem to root, indicating that HREEs were preferentially transferred not only down to roots, but also up to the young leaves. The concentration of oxalic acid in phloem exudates was much higher than other organic acids. 94.7% oxalic acid in phloem exudates was preferred to combine with REEs, especially HREEs. Additionally, the concentrations of HREEs had a high positive correlation with oxalic acid in phloem exudates, which demonstrated oxalic acid may play a significant role in the long-distance transport of HREEs in phloem. In conclusion, HREEs have higher translocation ability than light rare earth elements (LREEs) in both xylem and phloem of P. americana. As far as we know, this is the first report focused on the phloem translocation and redistribution of REEs in P. americana, which provides a valuable understanding of the mechanism for phytoremediation of REEs contaminated soils.

Association between light rare earth elements in maternal plasma and the risk of spontaneous preterm birth: a nested case-control study from the Beijing birth cohort study

BACKGROUND

Parental exposure to rare earth elements (REEs) could increase the risk of premature rupture of membranes, a major cause of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). In addition, different subtypes of SPB, such as spontaneous preterm labor (SPL) and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), may have different susceptibility to environmental exposure. Therefore, we investigated the potential associations between REE exposure in different trimesters and SPB and its subtypes.

METHODS

A nested case-control study was performed. We included 244 women with SPB as cases and 244 women with full-term delivery as controls. The plasma concentrations of light REEs were measured in the first and third trimesters. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between single REE levels and SPB, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to analyze the mixed-exposure effect.

RESULTS

Exposure to light REEs was associated with SPB and its subtypes only in the third trimester. Specifically, the intermediate- and highest-tertile concentration groups of La and the highest-tertile concentration group of Sm were associated with an increased risk of SPL, with adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of 2.00 (95% CIs: 1.07-3.75), 1.87 (95% CIs: 1.01-3.44), and 1.82 (95% CIs: 1.00-3.30), respectively. The highest-tertile concentration group of Pr was associated with an increased risk of PPROM, with an AOR of 1.69 (95% CIs: 1.00-2.85). Similar results were also found in BKMR models.

CONCLUSIONS

La and Sm levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of SPL, and Pr levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of PPROM.

Biomonitoring of rare earth elements in Southern Norway: Distribution, fractionation, and accumulation patterns in the marine bivalves Mytilus spp. and Tapes spp

Growing extraction and usage of rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) for medical and industrial applications has resulted in increased discharges into the marine environment. Using Mytilus spp. Mussels and Tapes spp. clams as bioindicator organisms, we analyzed 15 REY in soft tissues of specimens collected at two potentially polluted sites in Southern Norway: in the vicinity of an industry producing gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents (GBCAs) (Lindesnes) and in an industrially-affected fjord (Porsgrunn). The spatial distribution of REY and shale-normalized fractionation patterns were determined to assess the potential anthropogenic contribution of REY at the sites. At both sites, the REY fractionation pattern in soft tissue was characterized by enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) over heavy rare earth elements (HREE), while also displaying negative cerium and small positive gadolinium (Gd) anomalies. LREEs contributed to over 80% of the total REY concentrations, with increasing relative enrichment following higher total REY. Gd anomalies remained conserved in most sites despite significant differences in total REY; however, a high Gd anomaly (Gd/Gd* = 4.4) was found downstream of the GBCA industry spillwater outlet, indicating biotic uptake of excess anthropogenic Gd at this site. Total REY concentrations in clams in Porsgrunn were one order of magnitude higher than in mussels in Lindesnes. This may be attributable to freshwater influences in Porsgrunn, where clams collected closer to the river mouth had significantly higher total REY concentrations. This study constitutes the first assessment of REY concentrations in marine bivalves in Norway and can provide useful information for future biomonitoring studies on REY contamination.

Rare earth elements in sediments from a representative Chinese mariculture bay: Characterization, DGT-based bioaccessibility, and probabilistic ecological risk

Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants due to their worldwide exploitation in the high-technology sector. Aquaculture systems, particularly those located within coastal areas, are fragile ecosystems due to anthropogenic impacts regarding urban and aquaculture activities. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of rare earth element (REE) mixtures on aquatic biota in sediments from coastal aquaculture systems. In this study, the combined toxicity of REE mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment indicated that the surface sediments of Zhelin Bay had a 1.86% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota. The average value of total REEs (TREEs) was 297.37 μg/g, with light REEs representing the major part. A factor analysis (FA)-geographic information system (GIS)-based approach coupled with correlation analysis (CA) revealed that the REEs are derived from anthropogenic sources through fluvial processes.

Human biomonitoring of inorganic elements in a representative sample of the general population from Cape Verde: Results from the PERVEMAC-II study

Inorganic elements such as heavy metals and other potentially toxic elements are frequently detected in humans. The aim of the present study was to analyze the blood concentrations of 49 inorganic elements in a cohort of 401 subjects from Cape Verde. The study was performed in the frame of the Pesticide Residues in Vegetables of the Macaronesia project (PERVEMAC-II). Concentration of inorganic elements, including elements in the ATSDR's priority pollutant list and rare earth elements (RREs) were measured by ICP-MS in the whole blood of participants. A total of 20 out of 49 elements (40.8%) were detected in ≥20% of participants. Arsenic, copper, mercury, lead, selenium, strontium and zinc were detected in ≥99% of samples. Among the REEs, 7 showed detection frequencies above 20%. The median number of different elements detected was 15. In the present series, 77.0, 99.2 and 33.4% of the participants showed values of arsenic, mercury and lead higher than Reference Values 95%. These percentages were much higher than those reported in similar studies. Niobium and tantalum showed the highest median concentrations: 1.35 and 1.34 ng/mL, suggesting an environmental source of these valuable REEs in Cape Verde. Age appeared as the most important factor influencing the blood levels of inorganic elements. Lifestyle had an effect on the concentration of some of these elements. Those subjects whose water source was pond water had significantly higher arsenic levels. The concentration of ∑REEs was significantly higher among individuals who purchase their food in supermarkets (P = 0.013). These variables are of relevance since they can be controlled individually to reduce exposure to these contaminants. Our results may be useful for the implementation of public health measures by the competent authorities.
