Electric Dipole Moments from Stark Effect in Supersonic Expansion: n-Propanol, n-Butanol, and n-Butyl Cyanide

The orientation and magnitude of the molecular electric dipole moment are key properties relevant to topics ranging from the nature of intermolecular interactions to the quantitative analysis of complex gas-phase mixtures, such as chemistry in astrophysical environments. Stark effect measurements on rotational spectra have been the method of choice for isolated molecules but have become less common with the practical disappearance of Stark modulation spectrometers. Their role has been taken over by supersonic expansion measurements within a Fabry-Perot resonator cavity, which introduces specific technical problems that need to be overcome. Several of the adopted solutions are described and compared. Presently, we report precise electric dipole moment determinations for the two most stable conformers of the selected molecules of confirmed or potential astrophysical relevance: n-propanol, n-butanol, and n-butyl cyanide. All dipole moment components have been precisely determined at supersonic expansion conditions by employing specially designed Stark electrodes and a computer program for fitting the measured Stark shifts, inclusive of cases with resolved nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure. The experimental values are compared with suitable quantum chemistry computations. It is found that, among the tested levels of computation, vibrationally averaged dipole moments are the closest to the observation and the molecular values are, as in the lighter molecules in the series, largely determined by the hydroxyl or nitrile groups.

Structural and dynamical studies of CH-πbonded CH4-C6H6dimer by ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay

The inner-valence ionization and fragmentation dynamics of CH₄-C₆H₆dimer induced by 200 eV electron impact is studied utilizing a multi-particle coincidence momentum spectroscopy. The three-dimensional momentum vectors and kinetic energy release (KER) of the CH₄⁺+C₆H₆⁺ion pairs are obtained by coincident momentum measurement. Our analysis on the absolute cross sections indicates that the intermediate dication CH₄⁺-C₆H₆⁺is preferentially produced by the removal of an inner-valence electron from CH₄or C₆H₆and subsequent relaxation of ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay followed by two-body Coulomb explosion. Combining withab initiomolecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the real-time fragmentation dynamics including translational, vibrational and rotational motions are presented as a function of propagation time. The revealed fragmentation dynamics are expected to have a potential implication for crystal structure imaging with various radiation sources.

3D Characterization of the Molecular Neighborhood of •OH Radical in High Temperature Water by MD Simulation and Voronoi Polyhedra

Understanding the properties of the ^•OH radical in aqueous environments is essential for biochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, and the development of green chemistry technologies. In particular, the technological applications involve knowledge of microsolvation of the ^•OH radical in high temperature water. In this study, the classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and the technique based on the construction of Voronoi polyhedra were used to provide 3D characteristics of the molecular vicinity of the aqueous hydroxyl radical (^•OH_aq). The statistical distribution functions of metric and topological features of solvation shells represented by the constructed Voronoi polyhedra are reported for several thermodynamic states of water, including the pressurized high-temperature liquid and supercritical fluid. Calculations showed a decisive influence of the water density on the geometrical properties of the ^•OH solvation shell in the sub- and supercritical region: with the decreasing density, the span and asymmetry of the solvation shell increase. We also showed that the 1D analysis based on the oxygen-oxygen radial distribution functions (RDFs) overestimates the solvation number of ^•OH and insufficiently reflects the influence of transformations in the hydrogen-bonded network of water on the structure of the solvation shell.

Effect of Salinity and Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer on Fresh Property of Seawater-Blended Cement

The salinity of seawater can affect the properties of mixtures of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) and seawater. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of different salinities of water on the property of seawater-mixed cement slurry. Two PCE types with different side chain lengths and acid-ether ratios were used. Their physicochemical properties were explained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), turbidimetry, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. The performance of the PCEs was measured using slump, rheological energy, and solidification time. Finally, by measuring the adsorption volume, adsorption layer thickness, and water film thickness (WFT), the mechanisms involved in performance modification were studied. The results show that the workability and rheological performances of seawater-mixed cement paste are decreased by increasing salinity. With the increase in salinity, the minislump of the seawater-blended cement pastes with two PCEs decreased from 285 mm to 120 mm and from 280 mm to 78 mm, respectively, and the thixotropic areas were increased from less than 2000 Pa/s to above 10,000 Pa/s. Moreover, the adsorption amount of the two PCEs in the cement mixed with high-salinity seawater decreased by 55.99% and 71.56%, respectively, and the thickness of the adsorption layer and water film was decreased with increasing salinity. Compared with the two PCEs, PCE with long side chains and a high acid-ether ratio provided better salt resistance.

Applying fulvic acid for sediment metals remediation: Mechanism, factors, and prospect

Fulvic acid (FA) has been shown to play a decisive role in controlling the environmental geochemical behavior of metals. As a green and natural microbial metabolite, FA is widely used in environmental remediation because of its good adsorption complexation and redox ability. This paper introduces the reaction mechanism and properties of FA with metals, and reviews the progress of research on the remediation of metal pollutant by FA through physicochemical remediation and bioremediation. FA can control the biotoxicity and migration ability of some metals, such as Pb, Cr, Hg, Cd, and As, through adsorption complexation and redox reactions. The concentration, molecular weight, and source are the main factors that determine the remediation ability of FA. In addition, the ambient pH, temperature, metal ion concentrations, and competing components in sediment environments have significant effects on the extent and rate of a reaction between metals and FA during the remediation process. Finally, we summarize the challenges that this promising environmental remediation tool may face. The research directions of FA in the field of metals ecological remediation are also prospected. This review can provide new ideas and directions for the research of remediation of metals contaminants in sediments.

A three-step pathway from (2-aminophenyl)chalcones to novel styrylquinoline-chalcone hybrids: synthesis and spectroscopic and structural characterization of three examples

Three new styrylquinoline-chalcone hybrids have been synthesized using a three-step pathway starting with Friedländer cyclocondensation between (2-aminophenyl)chalcones and acetone to give 2-methyl-4-styrylquinolines, followed by selective oxidation to the 2-formyl analogues, and finally Claisen-Schmidt condensation between the formyl intermediates and 1-acetylnaphthalene. All intermediates and the final products have been fully characterized by IR and ¹H/¹³C NMR spectroscopy, and by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the three products have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular conformations of (E)-3-{4-[(E)-2-phenylethenyl]quinolin-2-yl}-1-(naphthalen-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-one, C₃₀H₂₁NO, (IVa), and (E)-3-{4-[(E)-2-(4-fluorophenyl)ethenyl]quinolin-2-yl}-1-(naphthalen-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-one, C₃₀H₂₀FNO, (IVb), are very similar. In each compound, the molecules are linked into a three-dimensional array by hydrogen bonds, of the C-H...O and C-H...N types in (IVa), and of the C-H...O and C-H...π types in (IVb), and by two independent π-π stacking interactions. By contrast, the conformation of the chalcone unit in (E)-3-{4-[(E)-2-(2-chlorophenyl)ethenyl]quinolin-2-yl}-1-(naphthalen-1-yl)prop-2-en-1-one, C₃₀H₂₀ClNO, (IVc), differs from those in (IVa) and (IVb). There are only weak hydrogen bonds in the structure of (IVc), but a single rather weak π-π stacking interaction links the molecules into chains. Comparisons are made with some related structures.

Dry heating, moist heating, and microwave irradiation of cold-climate-adapted barley grain-Effects on ruminant-relevant carbohydrate and molecular structural spectral profiles

Different feed processing techniques affect barley digestibility and nutrient utilization in ruminants. To our knowledge, there are few studies on the interactive relationship between carbohydrate molecular structure profiles of cool-season-adapted barley grain and nutritional characteristics for ruminants. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the effect of different technological processing methods on carbohydrate chemical profiles, Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System-carbohydrate subfractions, ruminal and intestinal carbohydrate digestion of barley grain in dairy cows; (2) to study the effect of heat processing on carbohydrate molecular structure of barley grain using advanced molecular spectroscopy; and (3) to associate processing-induced changes in carbohydrate molecular structure with changes in carbohydrate metabolic profiles in dairy cows. Barley grain samples collected from Crop Research Field in Western Canada underwent four different processing treatments: control, dry heating (120°C for 60 min in an air-ventilated oven), moist heating (120°C for 60 min in an autoclave), and microwave irradiation (900 W and 2450 MHz for 5 min in a microwave). The heating conditions used in the current study induced some changes in rumen-degradable and -undegradable digestible fibre (CB3) fraction. Intestinally digestible CB3 was decreased after moist heating. Moist heating decreased starch digestibility compared to the other three treatments. The processing-induced carbohydrate molecular structure changes, which was revealed by advanced vibrational molecular spectroscopic technique (attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared), could be used to predict carbohydrate nutritional value.

The location of the chemical bond. Application of long covalent bond theory to the structure of silica

Oxygen is the most abundant terrestrial element and is found in a variety of materials, but still wanting is a universal theory for the stability and structural organization it confers. Herein, a computational molecular orbital analysis elucidates the structure, stability, and cooperative bonding of α-quartz silica (SiO₂). Despite geminal oxygen-oxygen distances of 2.61-2.64 Å, silica model complexes exhibit anomalously large O-O bond orders (Mulliken, Wiberg, Mayer) that increase with increasing cluster size-as the silicon-oxygen bond orders decrease. The average O-O bond order in bulk silica computes to 0.47 while that for Si-O computes to 0.64. Thereby, for each silicate tetrahedron, the six O-O bonds employ 52% (5.61 electrons) of the valence electrons, while the four Si-O bonds employ 48% (5.12 electrons), rendering the O-O bond the most abundant bond in the Earth's crust. The isodesmic deconstruction of silica clusters reveals cooperative O-O bonding with an O-O bond dissociation energy of 4.4 kcal/mol. These unorthodox, long covalent bonds are rationalized by an excess of O 2p-O 2p bonding versus anti-bonding interactions within the valence molecular orbitals of the SiO₄ unit (48 vs. 24) and the Si₆O₆ ring (90 vs. 18). Within quartz silica, oxygen 2p orbitals contort and organize to avoid molecular orbital nodes, inducing the chirality of silica and resulting in Möbius aromatic Si₆O₆ rings, the most prevalent form of aromaticity on Earth. This long covalent bond theory (LCBT) relocates one-third of Earth's valence electrons and indicates that non-canonical O-O bonds play a subtle, but crucial role in the structure and stability of Earth's most abundant material.

Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Polycarbonate Deformation: Dependence of Mechanical Performance by the Effect of Spatial Distribution and Topological Constraints

Polycarbonate is an engineering plastic used in a wide range of applications due to its excellent mechanical properties, which are closely related to its molecular structure. We performed coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) calculations to investigate the effects of topological constraints and spatial distribution on the mechanical performance of a certain range of molecular weights. The topological constraints and spatial distribution are quantified as the number of entanglements per molecule (Ne) and the radius of gyration (Rg), respectively. We successfully modeled molecular structures with a systematic variation of Ne and Rg by controlling two simulation parameters: the temperature profile and Kuhn segment length, respectively. We investigated the effect of Ne and Rg on stress-strain curves in uniaxial tension with fixed transverse strain. The result shows that the structure with a higher radius of gyration or number of entanglements has a higher maximum stress (σm), which is mainly due to a firmly formed entanglement network. Such a configuration minimizes the critical strain (εc). The constitutive relationships between the mechanical properties (σm and εc) and the initial molecular structure parameters (Ne and Rg) are suggested.

Molecular Determinants of Human Rhinovirus Infection, Assembly, and Conformational Stability at Capsid Protein Interfaces

Human rhinovirus (HRV), one of the most frequent human pathogens, is the major causative agent of common colds. HRVs also cause or exacerbate severe respiratory diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Despite the biomedical and socioeconomic importance of this virus, no anti-HRV vaccines or drugs are available yet. Protein-protein interfaces in virus capsids have increasingly been recognized as promising virus-specific targets for the development of antiviral drugs. However, the specific structural elements and residues responsible for the biological functions of these extended capsid regions are largely unknown. In this study, we performed a thorough mutational analysis to determine which particular residues along the capsid interpentamer interfaces are relevant to HRV infection as well as the stage(s) in the viral cycle in which they are involved. The effect on the virion infectivity of the individual mutation to alanine of 32 interfacial residues that, together, removed most of the interpentamer interactions was analyzed. Then, a representative sample that included many of those 32 single mutants were tested for capsid and virion assembly as well as virion conformational stability. The results indicate that most of the interfacial residues, and the interactions they establish, are biologically relevant, largely because of their important roles in virion assembly and/or stability. The HRV interpentamer interface is revealed as an atypical protein-protein interface, in which infectivity-determining residues are distributed at a high density along the entire interface. Implications for a better understanding of the relationship between the molecular structure and function of HRV and the development of novel capsid interface-binding anti-HRV agents are discussed. IMPORTANCE The rising concern about the serious medical and socioeconomic consequences of respiratory infections by HRV has elicited a renewed interest in the development of anti-HRV drugs. The conversion into effective drugs of compounds identified via screening, as well as antiviral drug design, rely on the acquisition of fundamental knowledge about the targeted viral elements and their roles during specific steps of the infectious cycle. The results of this study provide a detailed view on structure-function relationships in a viral capsid protein-protein interface, a promising specific target for antiviral intervention. The high density and scattering of the interfacial residues found to be involved in HRV assembly and/or stability support the possibility that any compound designed to bind any particular site at the interface will inhibit infection by interfering with virion morphogenesis or stabilization of the functional virion conformation.

Maneuvering Applications of Covalent Organic Frameworks via Framework-Morphology Modulation

Translating the performance of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from laboratory to macroscopic reality demands specific morphologies. Thus, the advancement in morphological modulation has recently gained some momentum. A clear understanding of nano- to macroscopic architecture is critical to determine, optimize, and improve performances of this atomically precise porous material. Along with their chemical compositions and molecular frameworks, the prospect of morphology in various applications should be discussed and highlighted. A thorough insight into morphology versus application will help produce better-engineered COFs for practical implications. 2D and 3D frameworks can be transformed into various solids such as nanospheres, thin films, membranes, monoliths, foams, etc., for numerous applications in adsorption, separation photocatalysis, the carbon dioxide reduction, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. However, the research on COF chemistry mainly focuses on correlating structure to property, structure to morphology, and structure to applications. Here, critical insights on various morphological evolution and associated applications are provided. In each case, the underlying role of morphology is unveiled. Toward the end, a correlation between morphology and application is provided for the future development of COFs.

Cyclic Dimers of 4-n-Propyloxybenzoic Acid with Hydrogen Bonds in the Gaseous State

A comprehensive study of saturated vapors of 4-n-propyloxybenzoic acid (POBA) by gas electron diffraction (GED) and mass spectrometric (MS) methods supplemented by quantum chemical (QC) calculations was carried out for the first time. An attempt was made to detect dimeric forms of the acid in the gaseous state. It has been established that at the temperature of GED experiment, vapor over a solid sample contains up to 20 mol.% of cyclic dimers with two O-H...O hydrogen bonds. The main geometrical parameters of gaseous monomers and dimers of POBA are obtained. The distance r(O…O) = 2.574(12) Å in the cyclic fragment of the gaseous dimer is close to that in the crystal structure (2.611 Å). In the mass spectrum of the POBA recorded the ions of low intensity with a mass exceeding the molecular mass of the monomer were detected. The presence of ions, whose elemental composition corresponds to the dissociative ionization of the dimer, confirms the results of the GED experiment on the presence of POBA dimers in the gas state. The results of GED studies of acetic acid, benzoic acid, and POBA were compared. It is shown that the COOH fragment saves its geometric structure in monomers, as well as the COOH...HOOC fragment with two hydrogen bonds in dimers of different acids. The intermolecular interaction energy in considered acid dimers was estimated using QC calculations (B97D/6-311++G **). The significant value of last (>84 kJ/mol) is the reason for the noticeable presence of dimers in the gas phase.

Progress in Laser Ablation and Biological Synthesis Processes: "Top-Down" and "Bottom-Up" Approaches for the Green Synthesis of Au/Ag Nanoparticles

Because of their small size and large specific surface area, nanoparticles (NPs) have special properties that are different from bulk materials. In particular, Au/Ag NPs have been intensively studied for a long time, especially for biomedical applications. Thereafter, they played a significant role in the fields of biology, medical testing, optical imaging, energy and catalysis, MRI contrast agents, tumor diagnosis and treatment, environmental protection, and so on. When synthesizing Au/Ag NPs, the laser ablation and biosynthesis methods are very promising green processes. Therefore, this review focuses on the progress in the laser ablation and biological synthesis processes for Au/Ag NP generation, especially in their fabrication fundamentals and potential applications. First, the fundamentals of the laser ablation method are critically reviewed, including the laser ablation mechanism for Au/Ag NPs and the controlling of their size and shape during fabrication using laser ablation. Second, the fundamentals of the biological method are comprehensively discussed, involving the synthesis principle and the process of controlling the size and shape and preparing Au/Ag NPs using biological methods. Third, the applications in biology, tumor diagnosis and treatment, and other fields are reviewed to demonstrate the potential value of Au/Ag NPs. Finally, a discussion surrounding three aspects (similarity, individuality, and complementarity) of the two green synthesis processes is presented, and the necessary outlook, including the current limitations and challenges, is suggested, which provides a reference for the low-cost and sustainable production of Au/Ag NPs in the future.

How Water Interacts with the NOH Group: The Rotational Spectrum of the 1:1 N,N-diethylhydroxylamine·Water Complex

The rotational spectrum of the 1:1 N,N-diethylhydroxylamine-water complex has been investigated using pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 6.5-18.5 GHz frequency region. The most stable conformer has been detected as well as the 13C monosubstituted isotopologues in natural abundance and the 18O enriched water species, allowing to determine the nitrogen nuclear quadrupole coupling constants and the molecular structure in the vibrational ground state. The molecule has a Cs symmetry and the water lies in the bc symmetry plane forming two hydrogen bonds with the NOH frame with length: dHOH·NOH = 1.974 Å and dH2O·HON = 2.096 Å. From symmetry-adapted perturbation theory calculations coupled to atoms in molecule approach, the corresponding interaction energy values are estimated to be 24 and 13 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The great strength of the intermolecular interaction involving the nitrogen atom is in agreement with the high reactivity of hydroxylamine compounds at the nitrogen site.

Molecular Structure, Vibrational Spectrum and Conformational Properties of 4-(4-Tritylphenoxy)phthalonitrile-Precursor for Synthesis of Phthalocyanines with Bulky Substituent

By DFT method with B3LYP, PBE, CAM-B3LYP, and B97D functionals, it was found that the molecule 4-(4-tritylphenoxy)phthalonitrile (TPPN) has four conformers. The geometric structure, vibrational frequencies, electronic characteristics, and thermodynamic functions of conformers, as well as the structure and energy of transition states, were determined. IR spectrum of TPPN film contains vibrational bands belonging to different conformers. The assignment of bands was performed basing the distribution of normal vibration energy on internal coordinates. A synchronous electron diffraction/mass spectrometric experiment was performed to determine the structure of conformers in a saturated TPPN vapor. The elemental composition of the ions recorded in the mass spectrum indicates the thermal stability of TPPN at least up to T = 200 °C. The difference in the structure of tetrasubstituted metal phthalocyanines, which can be synthesized from different TPPN conformers, has been shown.

Effect of Corn Starch Granules on Stabilizing the Foam Structure of Ultrasonically Modified Whey Isolate Protein

In this study, the mechanism of ultrasound combined with corn starch granules (CSG) treatment improved the foam properties of whey protein isolates (WPI) and was systematically investigated. The results showed that ultrasound combined with corn starch granules treatment increased foam capacity and stability by 15.38% and 41.40%, respectively. Compared with the control group, corn starch granules enhanced the surface charge (52.38%) and system turbidity (51.43%), which certainly provided the necessary conditions for the improvement of foam stabilization stability. In addition, corn starch granules as microgel particles increased the mechanical properties of the interfacial protein film, thus delaying the instability of foam. This research would provide new insights into the design of new protein-based foam foods in the future food industry.

Design of biopolymer-based hemostatic material: Starting from molecular structures and forms

Uncontrolled bleeding remains as a leading cause of death in surgical, traumatic, and emergency situations. Management of the hemorrhage and development of hemostatic materials are paramount for patient survival. Owing to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability and bioactivity, biopolymers such as polysaccharides and polypeptides have been extensively researched and become a focus for the development of next-generation hemostatic materials. The construction of novel hemostatic materials requires in-depth understanding of the physiological hemostatic process, fundamental hemostatic mechanisms, and the effects of material chemistry/physics. Herein, we have recapitulated the common hemostatic strategies and development status of biopolymer-based hemostatic materials. Furthermore, the hemostatic mechanisms of various molecular structures (components and chemical modifications) are summarized from a microscopic perspective, and the design based on them are introduced. From a macroscopic perspective, the design of various forms of hemostatic materials, e.g., powder, sponge, hydrogel and gauze, is summarized and compared, which may provide an enlightenment for the optimization of hemostat design. It has also highlighted current challenges to the development of biopolymer-based hemostatic materials and proposed future directions in chemistry design, advanced form and clinical application.

Crystal Structure of the Human Copper Chaperone ATOX1 Bound to Zinc Ion

The bioavailability of copper (Cu) in human cells may depend on a complex interplay with zinc (Zn) ions. We investigated the ability of the Zn ion to target the human Cu-chaperone Atox1, a small cytosolic protein capable of anchoring Cu(I), by a conserved surface-exposed Cys-X-X-Cys (CXXC) motif, and deliver it to Cu-transporting ATPases in the trans-Golgi network. The crystal structure of Atox1 loaded with Zn displays the metal ion bridging the CXXC motifs of two Atox1 molecules in a homodimer. The identity and location of the Zn ion were confirmed through the anomalous scattering of the metal by collecting X-ray diffraction data near the Zn K-edge. Furthermore, soaking experiments of the Zn-loaded Atox1 crystals with a strong chelating agent, such as EDTA, caused only limited removal of the metal ion from the tetrahedral coordination cage, suggesting a potential role of Atox1 in Zn metabolism and, more generally, that Cu and Zn transport mechanisms could be interlocked in human cells.

Hosoya Polynomials of Power Graphs of Certain Finite Groups

Assume that G is a finite group. The power graph P(G) of G is a graph in which G is its node set, where two different elements are connected by an edge whenever one of them is a power of the other. A topological index is a number generated from a molecular structure that indicates important structural properties of the proposed molecule. Indeed, it is a numerical quantity connected with the chemical composition that is used to correlate chemical structures with various physical characteristics, chemical reactivity, and biological activity. This information is important for identifying well-known chemical descriptors based on distance dependence. In this paper, we study Hosoya properties, such as the Hosoya polynomial and the reciprocal status Hosoya polynomial of power graphs of various finite cyclic and non-cyclic groups of order pq and pqr, where p,q and r(p≥q≥r) are prime numbers.

Certain Topological Indices of Non-Commuting Graphs for Finite Non-Abelian Groups

A topological index is a number derived from a molecular structure (i.e., a graph) that represents the fundamental structural characteristics of a suggested molecule. Various topological indices, including the atom-bond connectivity index, the geometric–arithmetic index, and the Randić index, can be utilized to determine various characteristics, such as physicochemical activity, chemical activity, and thermodynamic properties. Meanwhile, the non-commuting graph ΓG of a finite group G is a graph where non-central elements of G are its vertex set, while two different elements are edge connected when they do not commute in G. In this article, we investigate several topological properties of non-commuting graphs of finite groups, such as the Harary index, the harmonic index, the Randić index, reciprocal Wiener index, atomic-bond connectivity index, and the geometric–arithmetic index. In addition, we analyze the Hosoya characteristics, such as the Hosoya polynomial and the reciprocal status Hosoya polynomial of the non-commuting graphs over finite subgroups of SL(2,C). We then calculate the Hosoya index for non-commuting graphs of binary dihedral groups.

Vibrational Emission Study of the CN and C2 in Nylon and ZnO/Nylon Polymer Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique was performed on polymers to study the neutral and ionic emission lines along with the CN violet system (B²Σ⁺ to X²Σ⁺) and the C₂ Swan system (d³ П_g–a³ П_u). For the laser-based emission analyses, the plasma was produced by focusing the laser beam of a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (2ω) at an optical wavelength of 532 nm, 5 ns pulse width, and a repetition frequency of 10 Hz. The integration time of the detection system was fixed at 1–10 ms while the target sample was positioned in air ambiance. Two organic polymers were investigated in this work: nylon and nylon doped with ZnO. The molecular optical emission study of nylon and doped nylon polymer sample reveals CN and C₂ molecular structures present in the polymer. The vibrational emission analysis of CN and C₂ bands gives information about the molecular structure of polymers and dynamics influencing the excitation structures of the molecules. Besides, it was further investigated that the intensity of the molecular optical emission structure strongly depends on the electron number density (cm⁻³), excitation temperature (eV), and laser irradiance (W/cm²). These results suggest that LIBS is a reliable diagnostic technique for the study of polymers regarding their molecular structure, identification, and compositional analysis.

Discovery of a Transferrin Receptor 1-Binding Aptamer and Its Application in Cancer Cell Depletion for Adoptive T-Cell Therapy Manufacturing

The clinical manufacturing of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells includes cell selection, activation, gene transduction, and expansion. While the method of T-cell selection varies across companies, current methods do not actively eliminate the cancer cells in the patient's apheresis product from the healthy immune cells. Alarmingly, it has been found that transduction of a single leukemic B cell with the CAR gene can confer resistance to CAR T-cell therapy and lead to treatment failure. In this study, we report the identification of a novel high-affinity DNA aptamer, termed tJBA8.1, that binds transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1), a receptor broadly upregulated by cancer cells. Using competition assays, high resolution cryo-EM, and de novo model building of the aptamer into the resulting electron density, we reveal that tJBA8.1 shares a binding site on TfR1 with holo-transferrin, the natural ligand of TfR1. We use tJBA8.1 to effectively deplete B lymphoma cells spiked into peripheral blood mononuclear cells with minimal impact on the healthy immune cell composition. Lastly, we present opportunities for affinity improvement of tJBA8.1. As TfR1 expression is broadly upregulated in many cancers, including difficult-to-treat T-cell leukemias and lymphomas, our work provides a facile, universal, and inexpensive approach for comprehensively removing cancerous cells from patient apheresis products for safe manufacturing of adoptive T-cell therapies.

Effects of Molecular Structure on Organic Contaminants' Degradation Efficiency and Dominant ROS in the Advanced Oxidation Process with Multiple ROS

In this study, the previously overlooked effects of contaminants' molecular structure on their degradation efficiencies and dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are investigated with a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system selected as the typical AOP system. Averagely, degradation efficiencies of 19 contaminants are discrepant in the CoCaAl-LDO/PMS system with production of SO₄^•-, ^•OH, and ¹O₂. Density functional theory calculations indicated that compounds with high E_HOMO, low-energy gap (ΔE = E_LUMO - E_HOMO), and low vertical ionization potential are more vulnerable to be attacked. Further analysis disclosed that the dominant ROS was the same one when treating similar types of contaminants, namely SO₄^•-, ¹O₂, ¹O₂, and ^•OH for the degradation of CBZ-like compounds, SAs, bisphenol, and triazine compounds, respectively. This phenomenon may be caused by the contaminants' structures especially the commonly shared or basic parent structures which can affect their effective reaction time and second-order rate constants with ROS, thus influencing the contribution of each ROS during its degradation. Overall, the new insights gained in this study provide a basis for designing more effective AOPs to improve their practical application in wastewater treatment.

Synthesis, Characterization, DFT and Photocatalytic Studies of a New Pyrazine Cadmium(II) Tetrakis(4-methoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin Compound

This study describes the synthesis, theoretical investigations, and photocatalytic degradational properties of a new (pyrazine)(meso-tetrakis(4-tert-methoxyphenyl)-porphyrinato)-cadmium (II) ([Cd(TMPP)-Pyz]) complex (1). The new penta-coordinated Cd^II porphyrin complex (1) was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, NMR, UV-visible absorption, fluorescence emission, and singlet oxygen, while its molecular structure was studied using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The UV–Vis spectroscopic study highlighted the redshift of the absorption bands after the insertion of the Cd(II) metal ion into the TMPP ring. The co-coordination of the pyrazine axial ligand enhanced this effect. A fluorescence emission spectroscopic study showed a significant blueshift in the Q bands, accompanied by a decrease in the fluorescence emission intensity and quantum yields of Φ_f = 0.084, Φ_f = 0.06 and Φ_f = 0.03 for H₂-TMPP free-base porphyrin, [Cd(TMPP)] and [Cd(TMPP)(Pyz)] (1) respectively. Singlet oxygen revealed that the H₂-TMPP porphyrin produced the most efficient singlet oxygen quantum yield of (Φ_Δ = 0.73) compared to [CdTMPP] (Φ_Δ = 0.57) and [Cd(TMPP)(Pyz)] (1) (Φ_Δ = 0.13). In the crystal lattice, the [Cd(TMPP)Pyz] was stabilized through non-covalent intermolecular interactions (NCI), such as the hydrogen bonds C-H···N and C-H···Cg. Additionally, crystal explorer software was then utilized to measure the quantitative analysis of the intermolecular interactions in the unit cell of the crystal structure and established that the C-H···π interaction dominated. The Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis revealed that each molecule is stabilized by hyperconjugation and charge delocalization. As a photocatalyst, the coordination complex 1 showed excellent photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of Levafix Blue CA reactive dye (i.e., dye photo-degradation of 80%).

Twelve-Nitrogen-Atom Cyclic Structure Stabilized by 3d-Element Atoms: Quantum Chemical Modeling

Using various versions of density functional theory (DFT), DFT M06/TZVP, DFT B3PW91/TZVP, DFT OPBE/TZVP, and, partially, the MP2 method, the possibility of the existence of 3d-element (M) compounds with nitrogen having unusual M: nitrogen ratio 1:12, unknown for these elements at the present, was shown. Structural parameter data were presented. It was shown that all MN4 groupings have tetragonal-pyramidal structure. It was noted that the bond lengths formed by nitrogen atoms and an M atom were equal to each other only in the case of M = Ti, V, Cr and Co, whereas for other Ms, they were slightly different; moreover, the bond angles formed by nitrogen atoms and an M atom were equal to 90.0°, or practically did not differ from this value. Thermodynamic parameters, NBO analysis data and HOMO/LUMO images for this compound were also presented. Good agreement between the calculated data obtained using the above three quantum chemical methods was also noted.
