Abstract
Intestinal regeneration and tumorigenesis are believed to be driven by intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Elucidating mechanisms underlying ISC activation during regeneration and tumorigenesis can help uncover the underlying principles of intestinal homeostasis and disease including colorectal cancer. Here we show that miR-31 drives ISC proliferation, and protects ISCs against apoptosis, both during homeostasis and regeneration in response to ionizing radiation injury. Furthermore, miR-31 has oncogenic properties, promoting intestinal tumorigenesis. Mechanistically, miR-31 acts to balance input from Wnt, BMP, TGFβ signals to coordinate control of intestinal homeostasis, regeneration and tumorigenesis. We further find that miR-31 is regulated by the STAT3 signaling pathway in response to radiation injury. These findings identify miR-31 as a critical modulator of ISC biology, and a potential therapeutic target for a broad range of intestinal regenerative disorders and cancers. Cells lining the inner wall of the gut help to absorb nutrients and to protect the body against harmful microbes and substances. Being on the front line of defense means that these cells often sustain injuries. Specialized cells called intestinal stem cells keep the tissues healthy by replacing the damaged and dying cells. The intestinal stem cells can produce copies of themselves and generate precursors of the gut cells. They also have specific mechanism to protect themselves from cell death. These processes are regulated by different signals that are generated by the cell themselves or the neighboring cells. If these processes get out of control, cells can easily be depleted or develop into cancer cells. Until now, it remained unclear how intestinal stem cells can differentiate between and respond to multiple and simultaneous signals. It is known that short RNA molecules called microRNA play an important role in the signaling pathways of damaged cells and during cancer development. In the gut, different microRNAs, including microRNA-31,help to keep the gut lining intact. However, previous research has shown that bowel cancer cells also contain high amounts of microRNA-31. To see whether microRNA-31 plays a role in controlling the signaling systems in intestinal stem cells, Tian, Ma, Lv et al. looked at genetically modified mice that either had too much microRNA-31 or none. Mice with too much microRNA-31 produced more intestinal stem cells and were able to better repair any cell damage. Mice without microRNA-31 gave rise to fewer intestinal stem cellsand had no damage repair, but were able to stop cancer cells in the gut from growing. The results showed that microRNA-31 in intestinal stem cells helps the cells to divide and to protect themselves from cell death. It controlled and balanced the different types of cell signaling by either repressing or activating various signals. When Tian et al. damaged the stem cells using radiation, the cells increased their microRNA-31 levels as a defense mechanism. This helped the cells to survive and to activate repair mechanisms. Furthermore, Tian et al. discovered that microRNA-31 can enhance the growth of tumors. These results indicate that microRNA-31 plays an important role both in repairing gut linings and furthering tumor development. A next step will be to see whether cancer cells use microRNA-31 to protect themselves from chemo- and radiation therapy. This could help scientists find new ways to render cancerous cells more susceptible to existing cancer therapies.

Abstract
The present study was to explore the expression of CRHR-1 and CRHR-2 in the placentas of idiopathic preterm birth (PTB-I), and to identify the CRHR-1 and CRHR-2 methylation with the deregulated CRHR-1 and CRHR-2. Immunohistochemical staining, real-time quantitative PCR and western blot analysis were performed to examine the expression of CRHR-1 and CRHR-2. The methylation in promoter regions of the CRHR-1 and CRHR-2 genes were specifically was analyzed using MethyLight method. Results demonstrated that the CRHR-2 expression was reduced in both mRNA and protein levels in PBT-I placental tissues, associating with a high level methylation of CRHR-2 gene in PTB-I placental specimens. in vitro experiments demonstrated that both CRHR-1 and CRHR-2 were downregulated, whereas the methylation of both CRHR-1 and CRHR-2 was upregulated in the hypoxia-treated human trophoblast-like JEG3 cells. In conclusion, CRHR-2 was downregulated in PTB-I in placenta tissues, in association with a high DNA methylation of CRHR-2 promoter. Methylation inhibitor might be a promising agent for PTB-I treatment.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of dietary Lactobacillus delbrueckii (L. delbrueckii) on immune response, disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila), antioxidant capability and growth performance of Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var. 450 fish (mean weight of 1.05 ± 0.03 g) were randomly distributed into five groups that fed diets containing different levels of L. delbrueckii (0, 1 × 105, 1 × 106, 1 × 107 and 1 × 108 CFU g-1) for 8 weeks. The results showed that intestinal immune parameters such as lysozyme, acid phosphatase, and myeloperoxidase activities, immunoglobulin M content, and the survival rate were improved in fish fed with 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii. In addition, 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii supplementation down-regulated mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1β and NF-κBp65, and up-regulated IL-10 and TGF-β mRNA levels in the intestine. The survival rate was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (68.33%) in fish fed 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii than the control diet-fed group (40%) after challenge by A. hydrophila. Fish fed with diet containing 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii showed higher antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and lower MDA concentrations than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The relative gene expression (SOD, CAT, GPX) showed the same trend with their activities. In addition, the growth performance was significantly improved in fish fed with the diet containing 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated that dietary optimal levels of L. delbrueckii enhanced immunity, disease resistance against A. hydrophila antioxidant capability and growth performance in Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var.

Abstract
Little is known regarding the epigenetic basis of atherosclerosis. Here we present the CD14+ blood monocyte transcriptome and epigenome signatures associated with human atherosclerosis. The transcriptome signature includes transcription coactivator, ARID5B, which is known to form a chromatin derepressor complex with a histone H3K9Me2-specific demethylase and promote adipogenesis and smooth muscle development. ARID5B CpG (cg25953130) methylation is inversely associated with both ARID5B expression and atherosclerosis, consistent with this CpG residing in an ARID5B enhancer region, based on chromatin capture and histone marks data. Mediation analysis supports assumptions that ARID5B expression mediates effects of cg25953130 methylation and several cardiovascular disease risk factors on atherosclerotic burden. In lipopolysaccharide-stimulated human THP1 monocytes, ARID5B knockdown reduced expression of genes involved in atherosclerosis-related inflammatory and lipid metabolism pathways, and inhibited cell migration and phagocytosis. These data suggest that ARID5B expression, possibly regulated by an epigenetically controlled enhancer, promotes atherosclerosis by dysregulating immunometabolism towards a chronic inflammatory phenotype.The molecular mechanisms mediating the impact of environmental factors in atherosclerosis are unclear. Here, the authors examine CD14+ blood monocyte's transcriptome and epigenome signatures to find differential methylation and expression of ARID5B to be associated with human atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) loaded hollow nanogels (nUK) were synthesized by a one-step reaction of glycol chitosan and aldehyde capped poly (ethylene oxide). The resultant formulation is sensitive to diagnostic ultrasound (US) of 2 MHz. Herein, we evaluated the in vivo sonothrombolysis performance of the nUK on acute ischemic stroke rat model which was established by suture embolization of middle cerebral artery (MCA). Via intravenous (i.v.) administration, the experimental data prove a controlled release of the therapeutic protein around the clots under ultrasound stimulation, leading to enhanced thrombolysis efficiency of the nUK, evidenced from smaller infarct volume and better clinical scores when compared to the i.v. dose of free uPA no matter with or without US intervention. Meanwhile, the preservation ability of the nanogels not only prolonged the circulation duration of the protein, but also resulted in the better blood-brain barrier protection of the nUK formulation, showing no increased risk on the hemorrhagic transformation than the controls. This work suggests that the nUK is a safe sonothrombolytic formulation for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Ultrasonic responsive urokinase (uPA)-loaded hollow nanogels (nUK) were synthesized for stroke treatment. Acute ischemic stroke rat model was established by suture embolization of middle cerebral artery. The nUK enhanced the sonothrombolytic efficacy and led to better BBB protection compared to the free uPA.

Abstract
Excessive oxidative stress and inflammation in hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) are implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension. It is reported that tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), a nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)-inducer, has a variety of pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory effect. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of tBHQ in high salt induced hypertension and to identify whether the beneficial effects were induced by inhibiting PVN oxidative stress and inflammation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with high salt diet (HS, 8% NaCl) or normal salt diet (NS, 0.3% NaCl). These rats were administration of tBHQ (150mg/kg/d) by oral gavage for 16 weeks. Our results showed that high salt intake resulted in higher mean arterial pressure, cardiac hypertrophy as well as increased plasma level of norepinephrine and interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 compared with NS rats. It increased PVN level of reactive oxygen species, gp91phox, IL-1β, IL-6, p-IKKβ and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activity, decreased PVN level of Nrf2 and Cu/Zn-SOD. Chronic administration of tBHQ significantly attenuated these changes in HS rats. These data suggest that the protective effects of tBHQ in salt induced hypertension are partly due to inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation in PVN.

Abstract
Extrusion free-forming, as a rapid prototyping technique, is extensively applied in fabricating ceramic material in bone tissue engineering. To improve the osteoinductivity of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) scaffold fabricated by extrusion free-forming, in this study, we incorporated a new peptide (P28) and optimized the superficial microstructure after shaping by controlling the sintering temperature. P28, a novel bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2)-related peptide, was designed in this study. Analysis of the structure, physicochemical properties and release kinetics of P28 from nHA sintered at temperatures ranging from 1000 °C to 1400 °C revealed that nHA sintered at 1000 °C had higher porosity, preferable pore size and better capacity to control P28 release than that sintered at other temperatures. Moreover, the nHA scaffold sintered at 1000 °C with P28 showed improved adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells compared with scaffolds lacking P28 or BMP-2. In vivo, nHA scaffolds sintered at 1000 °C with P28 or BMP-2 induced greater bone regeneration in critical-sized rat cranial defects at 6 and 12 weeks post-implantation compared with scaffolds lacking P28 or BMP-2. Thus, nHA scaffolds sintered at 1000 °C and loaded with P28 may be excellent biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
The construction of the high biocompatible biomaterials pretreated with MSC offers a promising strategy to improve the effects of stem cell therapy for the myocardial infarction (MI). However, assembling vascularized three-dimensional (3-D) myocardial tissues remains an enormous challenge. In this study, we optimized the decellularization protocol with the umbilical artery to construct microporous 3-D scaffold which is suitable for the stem cells (SC) proliferation. The SD rats underwent proximal left coronary ligation and a 5-mm diameter microporous SC patch was implanted directly on the infarct area (SC patch group). The LV contractile function, regional myocardial wall compliance, and tissue histology were assessed 4 weeks after patch implantation. The MSC patch integrated to the local heart tissue and the neo-vessels have been observed in the MSC patch. The vessels in the MSC patch were positive for the CD31 (marker for the mature endothelial cells). The left ventricle wall was thicker in the MSC patch group than the control group (p<0.05 vs. empty patch group). And the LVEF has been improved in the MSC patch group than empty patch group (59±6.7% vs. 31±4.5%, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that the implantation of the MSC patch improved cardiac contractile function in heart infarction rat model. The construction of artificial tissue from the decellularized umbilical artery and the MSC may open a promising perspective for the tissue therapy for MI.

Abstract
DJ-1 is a novel oncogene that can transform NIH3T3 cells in cooperation with the activated ras gene. DJ-1 appears to have its greatest effect on tumourigenesis, and it may have a greater impact on early-stage lung cancers. In this study, we proposed to investigate the clinical value of DJ-1 protein in the early diagnosis of lung cancer and compared its diagnostic value with other biomarkers. Preoperative serum DJ-1 levels were measured in 300 lung cancer patients and compared with benign pulmonary disease (n = 44) and healthy volunteers (n = 64). Using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemical analyses, we compared the DJ-1 expression between the primary squamous cell carcinoma tumours and matched metastatic tissues from a lymph node. The baseline preoperative serum DJ-1 of lung cancer patients was significantly higher than that of benign diseases and healthy controls (p < 0.001). In the early-stage subgroup, the median DJ-1 concentration (ng/mL) was significantly higher than that of the advanced stage (12.90 vs 7.75, p < 0.05). Using immunohistochemistry, we observed that the DJ-1 staining intensity was generally weaker and less common in the metastatic tissues compared with that in the primary tumour (McNemar-Bowker Test, p = 0.008). DJ-1 was highly expressed in the early stage of lung cancer, and its expression was significantly decreased after metastasis. Therefore, DJ-1 may be a potential biomarker for the early diagnosis and monitoring of lung cancer metastasis.

Abstract
We present an optical mapping near-eye (OMNI) three-dimensional display method for wearable devices. By dividing a display screen into different subpanels and optically mapping them to various depths, we create a multiplane volumetric image with correct focus cues for depth perception. The resultant system can drive the eye's accommodation to the distance that is consistent with binocular stereopsis, thereby alleviating the vergence-accommodation conflict, the primary cause for eye fatigue and discomfort. Compared with the previous methods, the OMNI display offers prominent advantages in adaptability, image dynamic range, and refresh rate.

Abstract
The high incidence rates of lung cancer have resulted in multiple progressions in cancer research leading to the development of novel therapeutic strategies. The three main branches of cancer research where improvements are being made are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. These research developments have significantly improved the survival rates of cancer patients as most of these therapeutic options target specific molecules involved in cancer progression and metastasis. Experimental research has successfully identified potentially important molecules responsible for cancer progression. Further, the above molecular markers of disease are clinically approved biomolecules of significant prognostic value. The above molecular biomolecules also helped in rapid identification of subgroups of patients who need immediate emergency treatment. Hypoxia is one of such conditions where the human system is deprived of an adequate oxygen supply and requires immediate treatment. Hypoxia markers have been proved to be beneficial in the timely management of cancer. The present review is focused on the latest updates in the area of hypoxia related to markers in the prognosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
A synergistic extraction method for gold from the refractory gold ores via ultrasound and chlorination-oxidation was developed. The effects of solid-liquid ratio, extraction time, ultrasound power, NaClO concentration and NaOH concentration on the extraction rate of gold from the refractory gold ore were investigated. The optimum conditions were as follows: NaClO concentration of 1.5mol/L, NaOH concentration of 1.5mol/L, solid-liquid ratio of 5, ultrasound power of 200W and ultrasound time of 2h. Under the optimal conditions, 68.55% of gold was extracted. However, only 45.8% of gold was extracted after 6h without the ultrasound-assisted extraction. XRD and SEM were used to analyze the influence of ultrasound on the mineral properties and strengthening mechanism. The results showed that the interface layer was peeled, new surface was exposed, reaction resistance was reduced, the liquid-solid reaction was promoted and reaction speed was greatly improved under ultrasound. According to the results of range and variance analysis, the optimum leaching experiment with orthogonal design was almost identical with the optimum experiment of single factor. Among them, the ultrasound power was the most significant factors affecting leaching rate of gold. Compared with other extraction method, the synergistic extraction process decomposed completely sulfide and improved significantly the extraction rate of gold.

Abstract
Estrogens are essential hormones for the regulation of fertility. Cellular responses to estrogens are mediated by estrogen receptor α (ESR1) and estrogen receptor β (ESR2). In mouse and rat models, disruption of Esr1 causes infertility in both males and females. However, the role of ESR2 in reproductive function remains undecided because of a wide variation in phenotypic observations among Esr2-mutant mouse strains. Regulatory pathways independent of ESR2 binding to its cognate DNA response element have also been implicated in ESR2 signaling. To clarify the regulatory roles of ESR2, we generated two mutant rat models: one with a null mutation (exon 3 deletion, Esr2ΔE3) and the other with an inframe deletion selectively disrupting the DNA binding domain (exon 4 deletion, Esr2ΔE4). In both models, we observed that ESR2-mutant males were fertile. ESR2-mutant females exhibited regular estrous cycles and could be inseminated by wild-type (WT) males but did not become pregnant or pseudopregnant. Esr2-mutant ovaries were small and differed from WT ovaries by their absence of corpora lutea, despite the presence of follicles at various stages of development. Esr2ΔE3- and Esr2ΔE4-mutant females exhibited attenuated preovulatory gonadotropin surges and did not ovulate in response to a gonadotropin regimen effective in WT rats. Similarities of reproductive deficits in Esr2ΔE3 and Esr2ΔE4 mutants suggest that DNA binding-dependent transcriptional function of ESR2 is critical for preovulatory follicle maturation and ovulation. Overall, the findings indicate that neuroendocrine and ovarian deficits are linked to infertility observed in Esr2-mutant rats.

Abstract
To establish a large-scale isolation procedure for adult porcine islets usable as a donor source for xenotransplantation and as a model of human islet isolation, we improved several characteristics of the conventional isolation procedure. At a slaughterhouse we first selected a breeder pig over 1.5 years old (and over 200 kg in weight) with warm ischemic time (WIT) of 15 ± 2 minutes as nonheart-beating donors. Then, we made a special enzymic mixture that consisted of collagenase S-1 (260 U/mg, NittaZelatin, Japan), collagenase P (1.86 U/ml Lyo Boehringer-Mannheim, USA), DNase (Sigma, St. Louis, Mo), Disparse (NittaZelatin, Japan), and protease inhibitor (Sigma). Third, this mixture was injected very gently into the pancreatic duct at the time of pancreatic harvesting. To prevent overdigestion of the pancreas, the mixture was first cooled to less than 10°C. Fourth, during the warm digestion of pancreas, the pancreas with the enzymic mixture was quietly put in a water bath at 37°C without mechanical shaking. Fifth, we purified the islets with a COBE 2991 cell processor by the Dextran 70 gradient method, because Dextran 70 is very cheap and has the same purification effect as the Ficoll gradient. The results of 10 consecutive breeder porcine islet isolations are reported. The total yield of isolations of islets over 50 μm in the longest diameter after staining with Dithizone (DTZ) was 85,900 ± 19,954 islets, 291,667 ± 240,452 IEQ (2,900 ± 2,324 IEQ/g). The purity of the isolated islets was very high: 90.2 ± 3.8%. Glucose stimulation during in vitro incubation induced significant insulin release from isolated breeder porcine islets. In two of the diabetic rats receiving encapsulated islets grafts using a mesh-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel bag (MRPB), a prominent reduction in serum glucose levels (less than 200 mg/dL) persisted for 13 and 19 days, respectively, after intraperitoneal xenotransplantation islets without immunosuppression. In conclusion, we succeeded in a more efficient and less-expensive isolation of a large amount of adult porcine islets from a nonheart-beating donor.

Abstract
Green tea polyphenols have recently attracted medical attention as bioactive agents with anticancer, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. We discovered their new usage as preservative agents for tissue transplants. We preserved rat aortas in a DMEM solution containing polyphenols extracted from green tea leaves. The preserved aortas retained original structures and mechanical strength, and were devoid of any undesirable cell secretions for over a month under physiological conditions. In addition, aortas from Lewis rats preserved for a month and transplanted to allogenic ACI rats completely avoided rejection by the host, suggesting that the polyphenols have immunosuppressive actions on the aortic tissues. From these results, we conclude that polyphenol treatment of aortic tissue transplant can maintain its viability for extended periods of time either before or after transplantation, and the method can be applicable to other transplantation situations.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the safety and reliability of ultrasonic bone curette in posterior cervical single open-door laminoplasty. Methods The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed, from 193 patients who underwent single open-door laminoplasty (C 3-7) from January 2012 to January 2016. The patients were divided into three groups according to different instruments: posterior single open-door laminoplasty was performed with ultrasonic bone curette in 61 cases (group A), with bite forceps in 73 cases (group B), and with micro-grinding drill in 59 cases (group C). There was no significant difference in gender, age, the course of disease, underlying disease and preoperative Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, visual analogue scale (VAS) between groups ( P>0.05). The operative time, intraoperative blood loss, drainage volume at 48 hours, JOA score, improvement rate, VAS and perioperative com-plication were compared. Results The operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and drainage volume at 48 hours of group A were significantly less than those in groups B and C ( P<0.05), but there was no significant between groups B and C ( P>0.05). The follow-up time was 12-21 months (mean, 14.6 months) in group A, 24-36 months (mean, 27.5 months) in group B, and 28-47 months (mean, 38.1 months) in group C. There were no cerebrospinal fluid leakage and incision infection in three groups. No complications of internal fixation loosening and rupture occurred during the follow-up. Rediating pain occurred in 6 cases of group A, 8 cases of group B, and 6 cases of group C, and was cured at 1 week after dehydration and physical therapy. No nerve root palsy was found in three groups. Fracture of portal axis occurred in 5 cases (7 segments) of group B and was fixed by micro titanium plate. The JOA score and VAS score at last follow-up were significantly improved when compared with preoperative scores in three groups ( P<0.05); there was no significant difference in JOA score and improvement rate and VAS score between groups ( P>0.05). Conclusion It is safe and reliable to use the ultrasonic bone curette in posterior cervical single open-door laminoplasty. It can shorten the operative time and has similar clinical curative effect to the traditional operation, and the lateral rotation of the lamina can be avoided.

Abstract
Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is associated with elderly patients undergoing surgery. However, pharmacological treatments for POCD are limited. In this study, we found that curcumin, an active compound derived from Curcuma longa, ameliorated the cognitive dysfunction following abdominal surgery in aged mice. Further, curcumin prevented surgery-induced anti-oxidant enzyme activity. Curcumin also increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-positive area and expression of pAkt in the brain, suggesting that curcumin activated BDNF signaling in aged mice. Furthermore, curcumin neutralized cholinergic dysfunction involving choline acetyltransferase expression induced by surgery. These results strongly suggested that curcumin prevented cognitive impairments via multiple targets, possibly by increasing the activity of anti-oxidant enzymes, activation of BDNF signaling, and neutralization of cholinergic dysfunction, concurrently. Based on these novel findings, curcumin might be a potential agent in POCD prophylaxis and treatment.

Abstract
β-Amyloid (Aβ) can form aggregates through self-assembly and produce neurotoxicity in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, the inhibition of Aβ assembly is considered as the primary target for AD therapy. In this study, we reported that fucoxanthin, a marine carotenoid, potently reduced the formation of Aβ fibrils and oligomers. Moreover, the fucoxanthin-triggered modification significantly reduced the neurotoxicity of Aβ oligomers in vitro. Molecular dynamics simulation analysis further revealed a hydrophobic interaction between fucoxanthin and Aβ peptide, which might prevent the conformational transition and self-assembly of Aβ. Most importantly, fucoxanthin could attenuate cognitive impairments in Aβ oligomer-injected mice. In addition, fucoxanthin significantly inhibited oxidative stress, enhanced the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and increased ChAT-positive regions in the hippocampus of mice. On the basis of these novel findings, we anticipated that fucoxanthin might ameliorate AD via inhibiting Aβ assembly and attenuating Aβ neurotoxicity.

Abstract
Conjugated pillar[5]arene-diketopyrrolopyrrole copolymer (P1) is synthesized by the copolymerization of a difunctionalized pillar[5]arene and a diketopyrrolopyrrole-based monomer, which shows large extinction coefficients (1.1 × 104 m-1 cm-1 ) at 519 nm and strong emission at 587 nm. P1 exhibits very strong host-guest binding affinity towards adiponitrile but low binding affinity towards 1,4-dihalobutane and 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)butane. Such an enhanced selectivity is first found in the polypseudorotaxane between pillararene and neutral guests in organic solution and is successfully used for the recognition and adsorption of adiponitrile by the formation of a P1-adiponitrile polypseudorotaxane.

Abstract
Layered constructs from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels and chicken eggshell membranes (ESMs) are fabricated, which can be further cross-linked by glutaraldehyde (GA) to form GA-PEG-ESM composites. Our results indicate that ESMs composed of protein fibrous networks show elastic moduli ∼3.3-5.0 MPa and elongation percentages ∼47-56%, close to human heart valve leaflets. Finite element simulations reveal obvious stress concentration on a partial number of fibers in the GA-cross-linked ESM (GA-ESM) samples, which can be alleviated by efficient stress distribution among multiple layers of ESMs embedded in PEG hydrogels. Moreover, the polymeric networks of PEG hydrogels can prevent mineral deposition and enzyme degradation of protein fibers from incorporated ESMs. The fibrous structures of ESMs retain in the GA-PEG-ESM samples after subcutaneous implantation for 4 weeks, while those from ESM and GA-ESM samples show early degradation to certain extent, suggesting the prevention of enzymatic degradation of protein fibers by the polymeric network of PEG hydrogels in vivo. Thus, these GA-PEG-ESM layered constructs show heterogenic structures and mechanical properties comparable to heart valve leaflets, as well as improved functions to prevent progressive calcification and enzymatic degeneration, which are likely used for artificial heart valves.
