Abstract
Consomic strains have recently attracted attention as an advantageous method to screen for genes related to developmental, physiological, and behavioral phenotypes. Recently, a new set of consomic strains was established from the Japanese wild-derived mouse strain MSM/Ms and C57BL/6JJcl. By analyzing the entire consomic panel, we were able to identify a number of chromosomes associated with anxiety-like behaviors in the open-field (OF) test, a light-dark box and an elevated plus maze. Detailed observation of the OF behavior allowed us to identify chromosomes associated with those ethological traits, such as stretch attend, rearing, and jumping. Repeated OF test trials have different meanings for animals, and we found that some chromosomes responded to only the first or second trial, while others were consistent across both trials. By examining both male and female mice, sex-dependent effects were found in several measurements. Principal component analysis of anxiety-like behaviors extracted five factors: 'general locomotor activity', 'thigmotaxis', 'risk assessment', 'open-arm exploration' and 'autonomic emotionality'. We mapped chromosomes associated with these five factors of emotionality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR imaging has advantages to detect meningeal lesions. FLAIR MR imaging was used to detect pachymeningeal thickening and thin bilateral subdural effusion/hematomas in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight patients were treated under clinical diagnoses of SIH. Chronologic MR imaging studies, including the FLAIR sequence, were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Initial MR imaging showed diffuse pachymeningeal thickening as isointense in 6 cases, hypoisointense in 1 case, and isohyperintense in 1 case on the T1-weighted MR images, and hyperintense in all cases on both T2-weighted and FLAIR MR images. Dural (pachymeningeal) hyperintensity on FLAIR MR imaging had the highest contrast to CSF, and was observed as linear in all patients, usually located in the supratentorial convexity and also parallel to the falx, the dura of the posterior fossa convexity, and the tentorium, and improved after treatment. These characteristics of diffuse pachymeningeal hyperintensity on FLAIR MR imaging were similar to diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement (DPME) on T1-weighted imaging with gadolinium. Initial FLAIR imaging clearly showed subdural effusion/hematomas in 6 of 8 patients. The thickness of subdural effusion/hematomas sometimes increased transiently after successful treatment and resolution of clinical symptoms. CONCLUSION Diffuse pachymeningeal hyperintensity on FLAIR MR imaging is a similar sign to DPME for the diagnosis of SIH but does not require injection of contrast medium. FLAIR is useful sequence for the detection of subdural effusion/hematomas in patients with SIH.

Abstract
SHP-2 protein tyrosine phosphatase plays an important role in activation of the RAS-dependent signaling. Gain-of-function mutations in the PTPN11 gene, which encodes SHP-2, have been found in the leukemia-prone developmental disorder Noonan syndrome as well as sporadic childhood leukemias, indicating that SHP-2 is a bona fide human oncoprotein. However, the role of SHP-2 mutations in non-hematological malignancies remains obscure. Here, we screened for PTPN11 mutations in primary solid tumors and identified a 1520C>A mutation that causes threonine-507 to lysine (T507K) substitution in the phosphatase domain of SHP-2 in a case of hepatocellular carcinoma. T507K SHP-2 exhibited altered substrate specificity with slightly elevated basal phosphatase activity. Upon expression in NIH3T3 cells, T507K SHP-2 induced transformed foci, which was not observed with wild type, Noonan-specific or leukemia-specific SHP-2. Furthermore, NIH3T3 cells transformed by T507K SHP-2 showed anchorage-independent growth and developed tumors in nude mice. These results indicate that quantitative and/or qualitative alteration in phosphatase activity determines the transforming potential as well as target cell/tissue spectrum of individual SHP-2 mutants as oncoproteins. Although rare in solid tumors, the identified T507K SHP-2 represents a distinct class of SHP-2 mutants with oncogenic RAS-like transforming activity, which could contribute to the development of solid tumors.

Abstract
It has long been known that excess intracellular fatty acids cause impaired insulin secretion, referred to as beta-cell lipotoxicity. Sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-1c is a transcription factor that controls hepatic fatty acid synthesis. Activation of SREBP-1c by overnutrition also inhibits insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2) and induces insulin resistance in the liver. As SREBP-1c is also expressed in beta cells, we hypothesized that activation of SREBP-1c could be a part of the mechanism by which saturated fatty acids induce beta-cell lipotoxicity. We found that nuclear SREBP-1c has a negative impact on both glucose- and potassium-stimulated insulin secretion as determined in islets from beta-cell-specific SREBP-1c transgenic mice as well as SREBP-1c knockout mice. This effect of SREBP-1c involves multiple functional pathways required for insulin secretion from beta cells: (i) decreased ATP caused by energy consumption through lipogenesis and uncoupling protein-2 (UCP-2) activation; (ii) repressed IRS-2 and pancreas duodenum homeobox 1 (PDX1) expression, leading to impaired beta-cell mass; and (iii) impaired post-ATP membrane voltage-dependent steps of the insulin secretion pathway caused by upregulated granuphilin and other ion channel proteins. Saturated fatty acids, such as palmitic acid (PA), impair insulin secretion through SREBP-1c activation, whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) restore PA-suppressed insulin secretion through suppression of SREBP-1c. These data implicate a therapeutic potential of EPA against insulin secretion defects caused by lipotoxicity.

Abstract
We experienced 3 cases of viral infections after lung transplantation. Case 1: Fifty-two-year-old male with pulmonary emphysema underwent left single lung transplantation from a cadaveric donor. Three months after transplantation he presented Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viremia, resulting in multiple lymphadenopathy. Biopsy showed post-transplant lymphproliferative disorder, and he was treated successfully with rituximab. He is well without recurrence around 1 and a half years after treatment. Case 2: Thitry-eight-year-old male with pulmonary emphysema underwent double lung transplantation from a cadaveric donor. Four months after transplantation he showed multiple nodules in both lungs. Percutaneous biopsy showed post-transplant lymphproliferative disorder, and he was treated successfully with rituximab. He is well without recurrence more than 2 years after treatment. Case 3 : Twenty-four-year-old woman with lymphangioleiomyomatosis underwent living-related bilateral lobar lung transplantation. Three months after lung transplantation she presented cytomegalovirus viremia. Since it proved to be ganciclovir-resistant cytomegalovirus infection, she was treated with foscarnet successfully. She is well without recurrence about 2 and a half years after treatment.

Abstract
SUMMARY Hemodynamic instability during and after carotid artery stenting (CAS) may reduce cerebral blood flow (CBF), leading to cerebral ischemia. To investigate changes in CBF in the periprocedural period, we continuously recorded the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) using near-infrared spectroscopy. In 46 consecutive patients with carotid artery stenosis, rSO2 was continuously recorded during and after CAS. In addition, the patients underwent SPECT to evaluate a change in CBF on the next day after CAS. Introprocedural bradycardia (heart rate < 50 bpm) occurred in 21 patients (46%) including one transient cardiac arrest. Intraprocedural hypotension (systolic blood pressure < 80 mmHg) occurred in 18 patients (39%), and 16 of them showed prolonged hypotension. The rSO2 in patients with bradycardia/hypotension during CAS was significantly less than that in patients without them (p < 0.01). Moreover, the SPECT on the next day after CAS demonstrated that the ipsilateral CBF in patients with bradycardia/hypotension during CAS significantly more than that in patients without them (p < 0.05). Intraprocedural hemodynamic instability resulted in a significant decrease in rSO2, leading to a possible severe cerebral ischemia. In addition, intraprocedural bradycardia/hypotension might be related with postprodedural hyperperfusion, causing the morbidity and mortality after CAS.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the effect of norepinephrine (NE) and related compounds on the growth of bacteria, we have examined the effect of the neuroendocrine hormone NE and related compounds on the growth of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and other human-pathogenic Vibrio species (Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus, and Vibrio mimicus). METHODS AND RESULTS The effects on bacterial growth were examined using the serum-based medium and viable cells were counted using agar plates. We have shown that NE and its related compounds stimulate growth of V. parahaemolyticus in serum-based medium. This NE-induced growth stimulation was dependent upon the presence of transferrin. NE also stimulated growth of V. mimicus, but not V. cholerae and V. vulnificus. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the Vibrio species differ in their ability to respond to NE. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY It is possible that NE and related compounds modulate the pathogenicity of V. parahaemolyticus and V. mimicus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is elevated in asymptomatic patients with various cardiac abnormalities. We tested the hypothesis that measuring BNP is useful for detecting asymptomatic patients with cardiac abnormalities who are not identified by conventional health check-up programmes. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 2001 to 2002, 6189 subjects (women 34.0%; mean age 56.6 years) underwent multiphasic health check-ups in our hospital, of which 4818 without cardiac abnormalities as revealed by the health check-up were enrolled in the present study. Their plasma concentrations of BNP were measured. RESULTS Plasma concentrations of BNP were higher than the normal reference upper limit of our hospital (21.3 pg mL(-1)) in 925 of the 4818 subjects. Echocardiography was performed in 471 subjects who were randomly selected from the 925 subjects with elevated BNP. Abnormal findings were detected in 174 subjects, comprising valvular heart disease in 83, systolic dysfunction in 10, diastolic dysfunction in 54, left ventricular hypertrophy in 41, left ventricular enlargement in 11, left atrial enlargement in 13 and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in 3. CONCLUSIONS Since BNP measurement identifies additional subjects with cardiac abnormalities, it is useful for detecting asymptomatic cardiac abnormalities among apparently healthy subjects, and is suitable for use in high-quality mass screening.

Abstract
We have previously defined a homozygously deleted region at chromosome 1p36.2-p36.3 in human neuroblastoma cell lines, NB-1 and NB-C201, and identified six genes including DFF45/ICAD within this region. In this study, we found that NB-C201 cells are much more resistant to various genotoxic stresses such as cisplatin (CDDP) than CHP134 and SH-SY5Y cells that do not have the homozygous deletion. To examine a role(s) of DFF45 in the regulation of apoptosis in response to CDDP, we have established stably DFF45-expressing NB-C201 cell clones (DFF45-1 and DFF45-3) and a control cell clone (NB-C201-C) using a retrovirus-mediated gene transfer. In contrast to NB-C201-C cells, DFF45-3 cells displayed apoptotic nuclear fragmentation in response to CDDP. Although CDDP-induced proteolytic cleavage of procaspase-3 and DFF45 in DFF45-3 cells, we could not detect a typical apoptotic DNA fragmentation. Additionally, deletion analysis revealed that C-terminal region of DFF45 is required for inducing nuclear fragmentation. Unexpectedly, (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays demonstrated that DFF45 has undetectable effect on CDDP sensitivity of NB-C201 cells. Taken together, our present results suggest that DFF45/DFF40 system may be sufficient for CDDP-induced nuclear fragmentation but not DNA cleavage.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between CRP and postoperative infection after cardiovascular surgery. We had 5 cases of surgical site infection, and 3 cases of infective endocarditis (IE) among 57 patients selected for this study out of 405 patients who had undergone cardiovascular surgery from May 1995 to March 2005. CRP, WBC and body temperature (BT) were evaluated during 1 week after the operation. Our results showed not only that the mean value of CRP level in the 49 non-infection patients attained the peak on the 2nd or 3rd day after the operation (18.2 +/- 4.7 and 17.7 +/- 5.7 mg/dl), but also that each patient in this group showed the same pattern of CRP sequence. CRP in the 5 cases of postoperative infection showed different patterns from that in the non-infection group. CRP in 3 cases of valve replacement for IE showed significantly higher level than that in 16 cases of valve replacement without IE through 1 week after the surgery. WBC level in the non-infection group reached the peak just after the operation (11.3 +/- 4.4 x 10(3)/microl) and then decreased gradually during 1 week after the operation. WBC in the 3 cases of valve replacement for IE, did not show different sequence pattern from that in the 16 cases of valve replacement without IE. WBC in a case of postoperative mediastinal infection showed a similar pattern of sequence to that in the non-infection group although it showed a remarkably high level of CRP sequence through 1 week after the surgery. BT in the non-infection group became the lowest just after the operation and reached the peak 8 hours after the operation. It then decreased gradually during 1 week after the operation. Our study demonstrates that CRP sequence after the surgery might be useful to detect postoperative infection after cardiovascular surgery.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate changes in choroidal blood flow (ChBF) in the foveal region of the human eye with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment induced by scleral buckling. METHODS ChBF was measured in the foveal region using laser Doppler flowmetry in patients with a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and no macular involvement before and after scleral buckling. The ChBF ratio was evaluated (ChBF of the affected eye to ChBF of the fellow control eye) to minimise individual variations. RESULTS Retinal reattachment was confirmed by 2 weeks after scleral buckling in all patients. The ChBF in the foveal region of the affected eyes did not differ from the fellow eyes before scleral buckling. The ChBF ratio significantly (p<0.05) decreased 2 and 4 weeks after scleral buckling compared with that before scleral buckling and returned to baseline 12 weeks after scleral buckling. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that ChBF in the foveal region transiently decreases after scleral buckling and recovers to the baseline level within 12 weeks in patients with a retinal detachment and no macular involvement.

Abstract
A strong posteriorly directed force applied to the mandible resulting in fracture, can also displace the mandibular condyle towards the external auditory canal or superiorly against the mandibular fossa, causing its penetration into the middle cranial fossa or even the fracture of the temporal bone. We report the case of a 30-year-old male patient victim of a bicycle accident that developed facial expression muscles paralysis on the left side soon after the trauma. On physical examination he presented left side postauricular ecchymosis, diminished muscular tonus of the left mouth angle and difficulty to close the left eye, he did not present clinical signs of facial fractures. The neurological and CT scan examination revealed fracture of the left temporal bone with total facial expression muscles paralysis. The patient was referred to the neurosurgical team for evaluation and they opted for a conservative treatment. After 3 months the patient showed a marked improvement with almost normal facial expression muscle movements. The trauma dynamics and treatment details are discussed.

Abstract
In an attempt to predict the lifetime of a charcoal filter designed to remove gaseous organic compounds, a model was developed to simulate adsorption and desorption of multicomponent organic compounds in the filter. The model is composed of a mass balance equation and adsorption/desorption rate equations. When a charcoal filter is installed in a cleanroom airconditioning system, numerous types of organic compounds are competitively adsorbed onto adsorption sites (pores) of the activated carbon on the filter, which leads to displacement adsorption phenomenon. In order to consider this phenomenon in lifetime prediction, the adsorption/desorption rate equations are designed to express the concept that organic compounds of different types share or compete with each other for the limited number of adsorption sites. In this model, adsorption/desorption characteristics of each organic compound are represented by multiple parameters. A method was also proposed to estimate parameter values of organic compounds with unknown properties. In this method, the simulation model considers the total organic compound detected by means of gas chromatography (GC) analysis of cleanroom air sampled upstream of the charcoal filter. This newly developed simulation model was validated by comparing simulated and measured adsorption breakthrough curves for a multicomponent system. A charcoal filter with honeycomb-structure media was used in this validation. Simulated values were found to be in agreement with the measured values, which demonstrates that this simulation model is valid.

Abstract
Reactivation of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients undergoing chemotherapy is well-documented, but reactivation during imatinib mesylate treatment has not been reported. This study reports a 54-year-old man, without prior liver dysfunction but with chronic HBV infection, in whom fatal HBV reactivation occurred during treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with imatinib mesylate. He developed fulminant hepatitis followed by marked elevation of HBV DNA polymerase, probably from the lymphocytopenic and immunosuppressive status induced by imatinib mesylate. Imatinib mesylate is widely used to treat CML patients. Although therapy with imatinib mesylate is generally well tolerated, the case presented here suggests that viral reactivation should be considered, even when using imatinib mesylate to treat CML.

Abstract
Chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies of ammonium sulfate, used as a food additive in fermentation, were performed in male and female Fisher 344 rats at dietary concentrations of 0%, 0.1%, 0.6% and 3.0% in a 52-week toxicity study and 0%, 1.5% and 3.0% in a 104-week carcinogenicity study. Treatment with ammonium sulfate caused significant increase in kidney and/or liver weights in males and females of the 3.0% diet group, but no effects were found on survival rate, body weights, and hematological, serum biochemical or histopathological parameters at any dose levels in the chronic toxicity study. Regarding carcinogenicity, ammonium sulfate did not exert any significant influence on the incidences of tumors in any of the organs and tissues examined. It was concluded that the no observed adverse effect level of ammonium sulfate was the 0.6% diet, which is equivalent to 256 and 284 mg/kg b.w./day in males and females, respectively, and the compound is non-carcinogenic under the conditions of the study.

Abstract
AIMS Clinicopathological features were investigated to clarify the ultimate prognosis and prognostic indicators for patients with IgA nephropathy in Japanese children. METHODS We evaluated the outcomes of 181 patients in whom IgA nephropathy was diagnosed before the age of 15 years since September 1979 and followed-up at least for three years with regard to clinical data at the onset of symptoms and renal histologic data. RESULTS After mean follow-up of 7.3 years from onset, 91 patients of 181 (50.3%) were in clinical remission at the last examination, 24 (13.2%) had isolated hematuria, 59 (32.6%) had hematuria and proteinuria. Eighteen of 59 (9.9%) had proteinuria more than 1 g per 24 hours. Hypertension was observed in 12 cases and 7 (3.9%) developed end-stage renal disease. Except 7, no patient had reduced renal function and elevated serum creatinine at the final follow-up. Predicted renal survival rate from onset was 92.3% at 10 years and 89.1% at 20 years. In multivariable analysis, age at onset and chronic changes of tubulointerstitium were associated with poor outcome. CONCLUSIONS Of 181 children with IgA nephropathy, 50% regressed, remaining 46% had hematuria and/or proteinuria and 4% of patients lapsed into end-stage renal disease. Our results indicate that childhood IgA nephropathy has a benign course and the risk for end-stage renal disease is lower than that of adults. Age at onset and tubulointerstitial lesions were the strong predictors of a progressive course of childhood IgA nephropathy.

Abstract
The nidi of osteoid osteoma are small and difficult to identify precisely; this can necessitate substantial resection of the surrounding normal bone. We applied percutaneous, image-guided radiofrequency ablation to treat 5 patients with osteoid osteoma. The precise location of each nidus was determined using a 3-mm-thick spiral computed tomographic scan. The most appropriate needle pathway was selected to avoid major neural and vascular structures. A 14-gauge core needle was introduced into the nidus and then exchanged for a 17-gauge straight rigid electrode with a 1-cm exposed tip to heat the lesion to 90 degrees centigrade for 5 minutes. Four of the 5 patients were discharged on the day after surgery without any external supports, and were pain-free after a few days. The remaining patient had a pes equinus contracture induced by the penetration of the calf muscles through a posterior approach but was fully recovered 6 days later. The mean follow-up period was 20.6 months. No recurrences or late complications were observed in this series. This case series shows that the computed tomography-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation is a simple, minimally invasive, and highly effective technique for the treatment of osteoid osteoma.

Abstract
To study the clinical characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcome of patients with Pancoast tumors who underwent surgery over 11-year period. From January 1994 to May 2005, 13 patients (12 men, 1 woman) with Pancoast tumor and histology of non-small cell lung cancer underwent surgical resection. Nine patients were received induction therapy (8 chemoradiation, 1 radiation only), and there were no treatment-related deaths. Twelve lobectomies, 1 pneumonectomy, and none of wedge resections or partial resection were performed. The number of ribs resected ranged from 2-6 (median 2.8). Chest wall reconstruction was performed in 2 patients, total vertebrectomy in 2, bronchoplasty in 2, and pulmonary arterioplasty in 1. Twelve of 13 patients (92.3%) had a complete resection. Pathologic stages were IB, IIB, IIIA and IIIB in 1, 7, 2, and 1, respectively, and pathologic complete responses was noted in 1. After a median follow-up of 34 months, the 3-year survival was 78.6% for all 13 patients and 85.7% for patients who had a complete resection. It is thought that induction chemoradiation for Pancoast tumors have potential to be able to become the treatment strategy in the future.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the serum levels of prorenin and its correlation with the severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS 248 patients with diabetes and 108 control subjects were divided into four groups: no-DR (n = 146), no proliferative diabetic retinopathy (no-PDR) (n = 78), PDR (n = 24), and controls (n = 108). Serum levels of prorenin from all subjects were measured using the new antibody activating direct kinetic (AAD-PR) assay. The serum prorenin levels were compared among the groups. RESULTS The serum levels of prorenin in the control, no-DR, no-PDR, and PDR groups, respectively, were 109.1 (66.1), 194.6 (160.4), 271.5 (220.3), and 428.4 (358.4) pg/ml (mean (SD)). Prorenin in the PDR group was remarkably high compared with the control and no-DR groups (p<0.0001) and with the no-PDR group (p = 0.002). Serum levels of prorenin increased with increasingly severe retinopathy. No correlation was found between the prorenin level and the duration of disease or HbA(1c). CONCLUSIONS The serum levels of prorenin in patients with PDR were found to be markedly high using the AAD-PR assay. Increased levels of prorenin in diabetes may have an important role in the pathogenesis of DR.

Abstract
Parafalcine chondrosarcoma is extremely rare, and may be difficult to differentiate preoperatively from falx meningioma. An 18-year-old woman presented with a parafalcine chondrosarcoma incidentally detected as a small lesion 2 years before admission, suggesting falx meningioma. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging just before admission revealed the parafalcine lesion had increased by about nine times in volume during the last 2 years. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) after intravenous administration of both thallium-201 chloride ((201)TlCl) and N-isopropyl-p-[(123)I]iodoamphetamine ((123)I-IMP) demonstrated no abnormal uptake of either tracer. Histological examination revealed classic low-grade chondrosarcoma. Parafalcine chondrosarcoma should be considered at this site if relatively rapid growth is observed. SPECT using (201)TlCl and (123)I-IMP may be useful to discriminate parafalcine low-grade chondrosarcoma from meningioma or other tumours originating in this region.

Abstract
Prolactin (PRL)-releasing peptide (PrRP) is a strong candidate stimulator of pituitary PRL transcription and secretion in teleosts. However, the role in control of extrapituitary PRL expression is unclear even in mammals. To study the possible presence of PrRP-PRL axes not only in the brain-pituitary but also in peripheral organs, the expression patterns of PrRP, PRL and growth hormone (GH) were characterized in amphibious euryhaline mudskippers (Periophthalmus modestus). PrRP mRNA is abundantly expressed not only in the brain but also in the liver, gut and ovary, while less abundant expression was also detected in the skin and kidney. Corresponding to the distribution of PrRP mRNA, PRL mRNA was also detectable in these organs. During adaptation to different environments, the changes in mRNA levels of PrRP paralleled those in PRL in the brain-pituitary, liver and gut in an organ-specific manner. Brain PrRP mRNA and the pituitary PRL mRNA increased under freshwater and terrestrial conditions (P < 0.05); expression of PrRP and PRL in the gut of freshwater fish was higher (P < 0.05) than those in sea-water fish although there were no changes in fish kept out of water; no significant change was seen in the liver. Expressions of GH were not correlated with PrRP. In the gut, PrRP and PRL appear to be co-localized in the mucosal layer, especially in the mucous cells. Thus, PrRP may also be a local modulator of extrapituitary PRL expression and the PrRP-PRL axes in various organs may play an organ-specific role during environmental adaptation.

Abstract
Diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is important in identifying spontaneous and secondary intracranial hypotension (IH) [cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hypovolemia] in patients with postural headache, because CSF pressure at lumbar puncture is variable. We examined the pachymeningeal enhancement pattern in patients with IH. MR imaging findings of pachymeningeal enhancement were examined before and after treatment in seven consecutive patients with spontaneous IH and one patient with IH after lumbar puncture. Diffuse non-nodular dural enhancement was observed in all patients. Characteristic thick, uninterrupted, enhancement was observed, mainly in the dura of the frontal, temporal, and retroclival regions, and the tentorium. Thin and uninterrupted, or partially interrupted, enhancement was observed, mainly in the parieto-occipital region and cerebellar convexity. Curved linear enhancement was observed along the calvarium of all patients. A wave-like appearance, a clear pattern of dural unevenness parallel to the brain, was detected in the frontal and temporal regions, near the base, in all patients. A wave-like appearance, especially in the frontal and temporal base, may be a characteristic MR imaging indicator of IH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A recent study showed that transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) induces amyloid-beta deposition in cerebral blood vessels and meninges of a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and that TGF-beta1 mRNA levels are correlated with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in human AD brains. A T/C polymorphism at codon 10 in exon 1 of the TGF-beta1 gene has been reported to be associated with the serum TGF-beta1 concentration. We investigated whether the TGF-beta1 polymorphism is associated with the risk of CAA. METHODS The association between the severity of CAA and the T/C polymorphism at codon 10 in exon 1 of the TGF-beta1 was investigated in 167 elderly Japanese autopsy cases, including 73 patients with AD. The apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype was also determined. RESULTS The genotypes (TT/ TC/ CC) were associated with the severity of CAA significantly in all patients (p = 0.0026), in non-AD patients (p = 0.011), and APOE non-epsilon4 carriers (p = 0.0099), but not in AD patients or APOE epsilon4 carriers. The number of the T alleles positively correlated with the severity of CAA in all patients (p = 0.0011), non-AD patients (p = 0.0026), and APOE non-epsilon4 carriers (p = 0.0028), but not in AD patients or APOE epsilon4 carriers. The polymorphism was not significantly associated with AD. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the polymorphism in TGF-beta1 is associated with the severity of CAA, especially in non-AD patients and APOE non-epsilon4 carriers.
