Abstract
The pistil of flowers is a specialized organ which contains the female gametophytes and provides the structures necessary for pollination and fertilization. Pollen deposited on the stigmatic surface of a compatible plant germinates a pollen tube which penetrates the stigmatic papillae and grows intercellularly through the style towards the ovules in the ovary. Pollen tube growth is largely restricted to the transmitting tissue in the style. Therefore the stylar transmitting tissue is extremely important for the migration of the pollen cell towards the ovary. We have isolated two related cDNAs, transmitting tissue-specific (TTS)-1 and TTS-2, derived from two proline-rich protein (PRP)-encoding mRNAs that accumulate specifically in the transmitting tissue of tobacco. The deduced PRP sequences share similarities with proline-rich cell wall glycoproteins found in a variety of plants. TTS-1 and TTS-2 mRNAs are induced in very young floral buds, accumulate most abundantly during the later stages of flower development when style elongation is the most rapid, and remain at relatively high levels at anthesis. These mRNAs become undetectable in maturing green fruits. In situ hybridization shows that TTS-1 and TTS-2 mRNA accumulation is restricted to the transmitting tissue of the style. The possible roles that these transmitting tissue-specific PRPs may play in maintaining the structural integrity of the style or in the function of this organ is discussed.

Abstract
In 124 patients with Crohn's disease (69 women, 55 men; mean age 33.7 [11-66] years) and 53 with ulcerative colitis (30 women, 23 men; mean age 36.2 [19-74] years) the incidence of lactose intolerance, as measured by the H2 breath test and blood sugar concentration, was determined prospectively. To exclude abnormal bacterial colonization of the small intestine or rapid small-intestine transit after partial resection of the small intestine as a cause of lactose intolerance, the oro-caecal transit time for lactulose (H2 breath test) was measured. While 21 of 124 patients with Crohn's disease (16.9%) had the expected incidence of lactose intolerance, this was present in only 2 of 53 patients with ulcerative colitis (3.8%; P < 0.05). The lactose intolerance was independent of the site of any inflammatory changes, disease activity and extent of small-intestine resection. Oro-caecal transit time for lactose was similar for all patients. There was no lactose intolerance in two patients with abnormal small-intestinal bacterial colonization.--Because of their considerable diagnostic and prognostic significance, tests for lactose intolerance should be performed routinely in all cases of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
An example of acute pancreatitis developing five weeks after initial treatment with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and methylprednisolone for severe Crohn's disease is reported in a 37 year old female patient. She had undergone cholecystectomy for gall stones some years earlier. There was no evidence of acute or chronic pancreatitis. No morphological changes of the upper gastrointestinal tract were found except for some irregularity of the main pancreatic duct and the secondary ducts on endoscopic retrograde pancreatography. Rechallenge with 5-ASA did not induce recurrent pancreatitis or changes in pancreatic enzymes. This case report supports the concept of an association between acute pancreatitis and Crohn's disease.

Abstract
In a prospective study we compared the usefulness of various laboratory tests (albumin, alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (A1PI), cholinesterase (CHE), C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hematocrit) and activity indices (CDAI, VHAI) in relation to the disease activity by endoscopic criteria. Except for hematocrit highly significant differences (p less than 0.0005) of the mean values of all test results were found for patients without or with slight mucosal lesions compared with patients with severe inflammation of the mucosa. Further analysis of the data indicates the highest test efficiency (84%), sensitivity (80%), and specificity (88.6%) for CHE. CHE showed good correlations to all other tests; the highest correlation was found between CHE and VHAI (r = -0.78). We suggest that a suppression of CHE synthesis mediated by endotoxins and cytokines rather than an increased intestinal loss explains the decreased CHE in severe Crohn's disease. It is concluded from the data that CHE is a useful test to assess the inflammatory activity of Crohn's disease.

Abstract
In a prospective study, we evaluated 33 diabetic patients [type I (n = 8) and type II (n = 25)]. Esophageal motor functions were examined by registering clinical symptoms and by performing esophageal manometry. We also investigated peripheral and autonomic neuropathy. In diabetics, the lower and upper esophageal sphincter pressure and amplitudes of peristaltic waves were reduced. Compared with controls (n = 30), in diabetics the esophageal peristaltic velocity was reduced significantly, and the duration of contractions were decreased as well. Multipeaked waves were uncommon in diabetics, while non-propulsive contractions were seen more often. No correlation was found between esophageal dysfunction and peripheral or autonomic neuropathy. Some 60% of diabetics reported esophageal symptoms; however, no relationship between these symptoms and the extent of dysfunction in esophageal motility was found.

Abstract
Although fecal incontinence is one of the more frequent clinical symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract, its assessment is often neglected in clinical practice. The psychosocial aspects of the symptoms are also often overlooked: The number of undetected cases in comparison to those registered illustrates that not only patients but also physicians avoid this topic during clinical routine. Consequences of fecal incontinence for the quality of life of patients have rarely been investigated, but we could show that there are specific impacts of incontinence on family life, specifically with respect to sexuality, and on the job situation of those affected. Finally, it has been shown that in most cases continence can be achieved by management strategies deriving from psychological learning theory such as biofeedback training.

Abstract
Significantly decreased levels of serumcholinesterase (CHE) were found in acute Crohn's disease (= CD) (3.2 +/- 1.0 KU/L) and acute ulcerative colitis (= UC) (3.54 +/- 1.6 KU/L) as compared to patients with mild or quiescient disease (CD: 5.5 +/- 1.1 KU/L; UC: 5.59 +/- 0.94 KU/L) and healthy controls (5.69 +/- 1.3 KU/L). Suppression of CHE was most evident in Crohn's colitis (2.98 +/- 1.0 KU/L) and extensive UC (2.96 +/- 1.28 KU/L). Intraindividual comparison showed an increase of CHE-levels during treatment with steroids and salicylates. There was no significant correlation to the reduced bodyweight-levels in severe IBD. Best correlations were seen between CHE/albumin (CD: r = +0.61; UC: r = +0.73) and CHE/hematocrit (CD: r = +0.50; UC: r = +0.61) in severe inflammatory bowel disease. The results of a discriminant analysis showed that CHE-levels can predict the degree of activity correctly in the majority of patients with CD and UC. It is suggested that the decrease of serumcholinesterase reflects an inhibition of liver synthesis as an acute phase response-induced by endotoxins and cytokines.

Abstract
Two distinct GH-binding proteins (GHBP) are present in circulation in the human. The major GHBP (high affinity GHBP) is homologous to the extracellular portion of the GH receptor and the concentration of this protein in circulation may reflect the status of the GH receptor in the tissues. To gain information about the concentration of GHBPs in children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), we measured GHBP in the serum of 46 children with IDDM and compared it to that in 53 healthy control subjects matched for age and sexual maturity. The total GHBP concentration in the group of pubertal and postpubertal IDDM patients was lower than that measured in the control group (mean +/- SEM: 7.8 +/- 0.4 vs. 9.0 +/- 0.5%, P = 0.05). The diabetic children in stages II to IV of puberty had a lower GHBP level compared to their healthy controls (7.6 +/- 0.4 vs. 9.1 +/- 0.5%, P = 0.02), whereas the difference between the diabetic and control group of postpubertal children was not statistically different (8.3 +/- 0.7 vs. 9.7 +/- 0.7%, P = 0.1). In a randomly selected subset of eight patients and eight controls, the concentration of the individual GHBPs (i.e. high affinity and low affinity (GHBP) was estimated by gel chromatography. There was no difference in the low affinity GHBP between the two groups (9.9 +/- 0.6% vs. 9.9 +/- 0.4%), but the high affinity GHBP was less in the diabetic group than in the control group (10.5 +/- 0.9 vs. 15.6 +/- 1.0%, P less than 0.01). In the diabetic group, there was no correlation between the GHBP levels and age, duration of diabetes, hemoglobin A1, or insulin dose. We conclude that in IDDM there is less of the high affinity GHBP, suggesting a decrease in the number of GH receptors in these patients. This decrease may contribute to GH resistance manifesting as decreased insulin-like growth factor-I levels despite high GH levels in patients with IDDM.

Abstract
Quantitative autoradiographic analysis of [3H] 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) binding in vitamin D deficient mice provided evidence for high levels of specific binding in choroid plexus and, to a lesser extent, ventral hippocampus. Sucrose gradient analysis yielded a 3-4S peak of specific [3H]1,25(OH)2D3 binding in bovine choroid plexus, but not amygdala or hippocampus. Scatchard analysis of [3H]1,25(OH)2D3 binding in bovine choroid plexus yielded KD = 0.23 +/- 0.06 nM and Nmax = 43.5 +/- 0 fmol/g tissue (n = 5). This result indicates the presence of significant receptor-like [3H]1,25(OH)2D3 binding sites in the choroid plexus and, thus, suggests roles for this hormone in regulating the entry of calcium into the brain and/or in the central regulation of calcium homeostasis.

Abstract
Cotyledons of seven African species within Cucumis, subgenus Melo, subgroup Myriocarpus (4x C. aculeatus, C. anguria var. anguria Meeuse, C. dipsaceus Ehrenb. ex Spach, C. ficifolius A. Rich, C. myriocarpus ssp. leptodermis Schweik., C. prophetarum, and 2x and 4x C. zeyheri Sond.), and 2x C. sativus L. of subgenus Cucumis were surveyed using horizontal starch gel protein electrophoresis to characterize interspecific and intraspecific variation. Cluster and classification and regression tree analysis of allelic frequencies among 14 polymorphic loci indicated that C. myriocarpus ssp. leptodermis, C. prophetarum ssp. dissectus, C. ficifolius, C. anguria var. anguria, and 2x and 4x C. zeyheri have biochemical affinities and could be distinguished from C. aculeatus and C. dipsaceus, which were similar. Within the first group, C. myriocarpus ssp. leptodermis and C. prophetarum ssp. dissectus accession formed a well-defined group. Cucumis prophetarum ssp. dissectus was more similar to C. myriocarpus ssp. leptodermis than to the C. ficifolius accessions evaluated. In the second group, two C. zeyheri accessions (C81321, C80346) were more similar to C. prophetarum ssp. prophetarum (C82069) than four other C. zeyheri evaluated. Cucumis sativus was dissimilar from all other species studied. Key words: evolution, biochemical genetics, isozymes.

Abstract
In 40 patients with Crohn's disease the subsequent parameters were determined in relation to the endoscopic features (group A: no or slight activity respectively [n = 26]; group B: severe inflammation of the mucosa [n = 14]; group C: patients of group B after four-weeks treatment): Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI), van Hees activity index (VHAI), C-reactive protein (CRP), ESR (erythrocytic sedimentation rate), albumin, hematocrit, platelets, alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT), antithrombin III, fibrinogen, clotting factors V and VIII. The hemostaseological tests were compared to the data of 16 healthy controls. The results showed significant differences regarding the mean values of CRP, ESR, albumin, CDAI, VHAI, platelets and A1AT between group A, B and C. No influence of localization or duration of the disease, age or sex could be shown by multivariate analysis. The highest test efficacy to discriminate between patients of group A and B was determined for VHAI (81.1%) and alpha-1-antitrypsin (78.4%). CDAI, platelet count, ESR (each 75.7%), CRP (70.3%) and hematocrit were less efficient. Levels of fibrinogen (59.4%) and clotting factors V (59.4%) and VIII (64.8%) were much less important. In conclusion A1AT and platelet count should be regarded as helpful tests in the evaluation of the inflammatory activity in Crohn's disease.

Abstract
Stress ulcer prophylaxis diminishes but does not eliminate the risk of severe bleeding from this complication. In 70-80% of the cases the source of bleeding is hemorrhagic gastritis. No controlled studies exist which have in particular investigated conservative therapy in patients with stress-induced hemorrhage. Even effective measures to suppress gastric acid secretion or to reduce splanchnic blood flow are ineffective in 10-40% of intensive care unit patients with stress-induced bleeding. In these cases total gastrectomy has so far often been the only therapeutic approach. We report our experience with a new approach in treating severe stress-induced hemorrhagic gastritis after ineffective primary treatment with H2-receptor antagonists, pirenzepine and somatostatin. Continuous gastric lavage with 5-10 l ice-cold Ringer's solution was used until complete cessation of bleeding, as evident from clear lavage. Repeated administration of 12 g sucralfate (60 ml) at 2-h intervals for 24 h through a gastric tube was used to prevent recurrence of bleeding and to promote healing. Sucralfate was reduced on the 2nd and 3rd day to 20 ml 2-hourly and later to 10 ml 4-hourly. In four patients this treatment was used as an ultima ratio when the patients were already scheduled for total gastrectomy. A total of 23 patients were treated during a 7-year period; all of them responded successfully, and no patient required surgery.

Abstract
cDNA of bovine cGMP-dependent protein kinase (cGMP kinase) isozymes I alpha and I beta differ only in their amino-terminal domains (amino acids 1-89 and 1-104, respectively). Each recombinant isozyme (rI alpha and rI beta) was transiently expressed in COS-7 cells and its properties were compared with the cGMP kinase isozymes P-I and P-II purified from bovine trachea. The subunit of P-I, P-II, rI alpha and rI beta had a molecular mass of about 75 kDa. rI alpha and rI beta had S20,W values of 7.6 and 7.2, respectively, indicating that they were present as dimeric holoenzymes. Immunostaining with specific antibodies showed that P-I and rI alpha, and P-II and rI beta, were immunologically indistinguishable. P-I, P-II, rI alpha and rI beta had the same catalytic activity. However, rI alpha and rI beta were half-maximally activated at 0.1 microM and 1.3 microM cGMP, and 0.3 microM and 12 microM 8-bromoguanosine 3',5'-(cyclic)phosphate (Br8-cGMP), respectively. P-I and P-II had a similar shift in their apparent KA values. P-I and rI alpha bound 2 mol cGMP/mol subunit to high-affinity (site 1) and low-affinity (site 2) cGMP-binding sites. The exchange rates were 0.005-0.009 min-1 for site 1 and 3.7 min-1 for site 2. In contrast, P-II and rI beta bound and rI beta bound 2 mol cGMP/mol enzyme subunit at only two low-affinity binding sites (site 2) with k-1 values of 0.92 min-1 and 4.8 min-1. These results suggest that a change from the I alpha amino-terminal domain to that of I beta increases the apparent KA value for cGMP 10-fold by altering the binding properties of binding site 1. The differential expression of the cGMP kinase isozymes could be an important mechanism in vivo to dampen the effect of long-term elevation of cGMP level.

Abstract
Felson and Lessure 1964 (1) described varicosities involving the upper third of the esophagus in patients without portal hypertension. Several etiological factors causing these "downhill" varices, e.g. bronchogenic carcinoma, retrosternal thyroid adenoma or mediastinal fibrosis, have been described. Since September 1989 ectatic esophageal veins or "downhill" varices were diagnosed in nine patients with dysphagia and/or non cardiac chest pain. Intrathoracic masses as a possible cause of "downhill" varices could not be diagnosed in any of these patients. Endoscopy of the upper gastro-intestinal tract revealed spiral esophageal contractions as a potential sign of a esophageal motor disorder in seven patients. By means of esophageal manometry "nutcracker"-esophagus was seen in two patients and diffuse esophageal spasm in three patients. On the basis of these findings primary esophageal motor disorders should be considered as a possible cause of ectatic veins in the proximal esophagus and "downhill" varices.

Abstract
An investigation was conducted on 21 patients (16 men and five women; mean age 48.2 [34-67] years) with cirrhosis of the liver of various aetiologies to determine whether molsidomine, which selectively reduces pre-load with-out the development of tolerance, effects portal and cardiac haemodynamics in liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Intravenous injection of 2 mg molsidomine reduced the hepatic vein closing pressure after 30 min by 8% (P less than 0.05) and the hepatic vein closing pressure gradient by 13.4% (P less than 0.002). The cardiac output fell by 5.8% (P less than 0.02) and the mean systemic arterial pressure by 4.2% (P less than 0.003). The reduction in hepatic venous closing pressure gradient did not correlate with the fall in cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. In 15 of 21 patients the hepatic venous pressure fell, but in six patients (28.6%) the pressure was not reduced (non-responders). The latter failure of response was associated with marked ascites, significant functional liver decompensation and alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Preliminary long-term observations with molsidomine point to a reduction in portal pressure by as much as 40%. This suggests that the drug is suitable for preventing bleeding from oesophageal varices.

Abstract
Fifty two children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus were randomised to receive human isophane or lente insulin preparations in combination with soluble insulin in a double blind trial. Patients were seen every two months, and crossed over after four months of treatment. Control assessed by glycated haemoglobin was significantly lower in children on human isophane insulin, but fasting blood glucose and fructosamine concentrations and the number of episodes of hypoglycaemia were similar on both regimens. In five children on twice daily insulin regimens, insulin profiles throughout a 24 hour period demonstrated greater variability on lente compared with isophane insulin despite identically administered insulin doses. A questionnaire completed at the end of the study showed that two thirds of the children and/or their parents preferred the isophane insulin, and they gave perceived improvement of metabolic control as the major reason for their choice.

Abstract
In 1989, populations of North American gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, in seven contiguous northeastern states were severely reduced by a fungal pathogen. Based on morphology, development, and pathology, this organism appeared to be Entomophaga maimaiga. We have now used allozyme and restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses to confirm this identification. Previously, this mycopathogen had been reported only from gypsy moth populations in Japan. During 1989, E. maimaiga occurred only in areas that had been initially defoliated by gypsy moth >10 years ago. E. maimaiga caused 60-88% mortality in late instar larvae on research sites in central Massachusetts.

Abstract
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is an uncommon condition in which submucosal or subserosal gas cysts are found in the wall of the small or large bowel. Many different causes of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis have been proposed, including mechanical and bacterial causes. Approximately 85% of cases are thought to be secondary to coexisting disorders of the gastrointestinal tract or the respiratory system. Since 1986 we have observed 4 cases of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. A review of the literature is presented with emphasis on the etiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and therapy of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Symptoms of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis include diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, passage of mucus per rectum, vague abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, urgency, malabsorption, weight loss, and excessive flatus. Depending on the location of the gas filled cysts the range of symptoms in each patient may vary enormously.

Abstract
We report the case of a 23-year old woman suffering from Crohn's ileocolitis for 14 years who died of a prolonged shock followed by hyperglycaemia. The post-mortem examination showed an acute pancreatitis. There was no hint for Crohn's disease of the duodenum or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Unexplained Pancreatitis coincident with Crohn's disease might be a possible extraintestinal manifestation of the disease. However such association remains speculative at the moment. Further studies based on morphological, functional, immunological and epidemiological data are required. Review of the literature and our own data show the necessity to look attentive for other causes of acute pancreatitis associated with Crohn's disease (PSC, pancreas divisum, drug induced-pancreatitis).

Abstract
Experienced supervisors of trainee clinical psychologists used 24 scales to rate four concepts: 'your stereotype of a good trainee'; "a good trainee well known to you'; 'a bad trainee well known to you'; and 'your stereotype of a bad trainee'. Similar ratings were given for both the good trainee concepts, which were rated differently from both the bad concepts, which were also rated differently from each other. Factor analysis revealed that the supervisor's judgements fell across two interpretable dimensions.

Abstract
Growth hormone (GH) may directly affect the expression of some liver cytochromes P-450 inducible by xenobiotics, but this has been difficult to establish with pituitary ablation in living animals. Therefore, we incubated adult rat hepatocytes on a laminin-rich matrix, matrigel, a new system that permits hepatocytes to respond to xenobiotics with induction of the microsomal hemoproteins, the cytochromes P-450, in culture as they do in the intact liver (Schuetz, E. G., Li, D., Omiecinski, C. J., Muller-Eberhard, U., Kleinman, H. K., Elswick, B., and Guzelian, P. S. (1988) J. Cell. Physiol. 134, 309-323). Indeed, when cultures were treated with phenobarbital, there was a rise in mRNAs for the cytochromes P-450b/e and P-450p accompanied by a rise in mRNA for 5-aminolevulinate synthase, the rate-limiting enzyme in heme biosynthesis. Analysis of nuclei from the matrigel cultures established that phenobarbital treatment had activated transcription of the P-450b/e gene. Co-incubation of the cultures with physiologic concentrations of growth hormone completely blocked the induction of these P-450 mRNAs and partially blocked the rise in 5-aminolevulinate synthase mRNA. Induction of P-450p by isosafrole also was inhibited strongly by GH, whereas P-450p induction by pregnenolone 16 alpha-carbonitrile or dexamethasone was affected only weakly by GH. The effect of GH was specific inasmuch as phenobarbital-inducible expression of P-450 reductase, glucocorticoid-inducible expression of tyrosine aminotransferase, and basal expression of albumin were unaffected by the presence or absence of growth hormone. Nuclear analysis revealed that growth hormone inhibited phenobarbital-induced P-450b/e gene transcription, whereas the hormone was without effect on transcription of the liver-specific gene, tyrosine aminotransferase. In contrast, the addition of another peptide hormone, insulin-like growth factor I, was without inhibitory effect on P-450 gene expression. We conclude that growth hormone acts specifically and selectively in direct contact with the hepatocyte to control xenobiotic induction of some liver drug-metabolizing enzymes.

Abstract
In a clinical study (1.1.1986-28.2.1988) the oro-cecal transit time of lactulose was studied in 45 patients with liver cirrhosis of different etiologies by hydrogen breath test. The results were compared to the transit time of 16 healthy volunteers. The oro-cecal transit time of patients with alcoholic cirrhosis (means = 154 +/- 29 min.) was significantly increased (P less than or equal to 0.001) while non alcoholic cirrhosis (means = 99 +/- 34 min.) did not differ from the control group (means = 98 +/- 16 min.) As an explanation of the increased oro-cecal transit time an alcoholic autonomic neuropathy (- greater than n. vagus) is discussed.

Abstract
Patients suffering from chronic obstructive airway disease often have arterial hypoxemia, which is more or less severe. If hypoxemia deteriorates the function of the liver is still unknown. The aim of this study was to determine, if a mostly oxygen dependent process of liver metabolism (galactose elimination capacity) is disturbed and if it can be increased by oxygen insufflation. Under the same conditions an oxygen independent process (indocyaninegreen clearance) should not be influenced. Our results show, that galactose elimination capacity under room air was pathologic and can be increased significantly by oxygen breathing. No change of indocyaninegreen clearance was seen under the same conditions. After termination of oxygen therapy the galactose elimination capacity was as bad as before oxygen breathing. Dysfunctions of the liver, which are caused by hypoxemia, can be positively influenced by oxygen, but only for the duration of oxygen insufflation.

Abstract
The development of hepatic encephalopathy and coma hepaticum in patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatic cirrhosis is a serious problem. Since 1983 we perform a whole gut irrigation with mannite for cleansing the bowel via naso-gastric tube. The aim of this therapy is to reduce the severity of hepatic encephalopathy. The first 20 patients with the new therapeutic concept were compared with the last 20 patients with the prevailing therapy. We studied the effect of the new therapeutic concept as to reduction of hepatic encephalopathy and possible electrolyte loss. None of the patients in the mannite group had hepatic encephalopathy stage III or IV, whereas 75% of the patients without mannite showed clinical signs of stage III or IV. Serum potassium, sodium and chloride were not significantly different between both groups. In the group with mannite application no change in serum creatinine was observed, whereas in the other group a minute increase of serum creatinine was seen.

Abstract
In second-generation sparctics (Salvelinus fontinalis x Salvelinus alpinus) backcrossed to S. fontinalis, we have identified tight classical linkage of phenotypic sex with Ldh-1, Aat-5, and Gpi-3. We designate this locus Sex-1 and suggest that it may be the primary sex-determining locus in salmonids. Cumulative salmonid gene-to-centromere map distances for the three biochemical loci put the order as centromere--Ldh-1--(Aat-5 and Gpi-3), with the latter two loci being tightly linked. An absence of association of phenotypic sex (presumably Sex-1) with these same three loci and other loci known to be linked to these loci is shown in splakes (S. fontinalis x Salvelinus namaycush) and cutbows (Salmo gairdneri x Salmo clarki). These data imply that the linkage of Sex-1 with these loci is found only in S. alpinus and support the view that Sex-1 lies across the centromere from these three loci in S. alpinus, representing a Robertsonian fusion not found in any of the other four species. A similar specific Robertsonian fusion is argued for S. gairdneri, where Sex-1 may be linked across a centromere to another biochemical locus (Ha). These linkage results and chromosomal observations of other investigators suggest that Sex-1 lies on an information-depauperate arm.

Abstract
Field studies indicate that Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) communication signals vary with the social situation in which they occur [S. Green, "Variation of vocal pattern with social situation in the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata): A field study," in Primate Behavior, edited by L. A. Rosenblum (Academic, New York, 1975), Vol. 4]. A significant acoustic property of the contact calls produced by these primates is the temporal position of a frequency peak within the vocalization, that is, an inflection from rising to falling frequency [May et al., "Significant features of Japanese macaque communication sounds: A psychophysical study," Anim. Behav. 36, 1432-1444 (1988)]. The experiments reported here are based on the hypothesis that Japanese macaques derive meaning from this temporally graded feature by parceling the acoustic variation inherent in natural contact calls into two functional categories, and thus exhibit behavior that is analogous to the categorical perception of speech sounds by humans. To test this hypothesis, Japanese macaques were trained to classify natural contact calls by performing operant responses that signified either an early or late frequency peak position. Then, the subjects were tested in a series of experiments that required them to generalize this behavior to synthetic calls representing a continuum of peak positions. Demonstration of the classical perceptual effects noted for human listeners suggests that categorical perception reflects a principle of auditory information processing that influences the perception of sounds in the communication systems not only of humans, but of animals as well.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), whether recombinant, chemically-synthesised or purified from bovine colostrum, was equipotent in radioreceptor assays with IGF-1 or insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-2) as radioligand as well as in its ability to stimulate protein synthesis in L6 myoblasts. The N-terminal truncated, destripeptide derivative of IGF-1 was approximately 7 times more potent than IGF-1 in the protein synthesis bioassay. This increased activity occurred equally with the peptide purified from bovine colostrum as with chemically-synthesised material. The higher potency of the truncated form was not associated with an increased ability to compete for IGF-1 binding to L6 myoblasts.

Abstract
Despite the extensive use of sulfasalazine (SAS) and/or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and, more recently, rheumatoid arthritis, their mode of action has not been elucidated so far. None of the numerous pharmacological and biochemical effects described, including immunosuppressive, antifolate, and modulatory actions on lymphocyte and leukocyte functions, could be defined unequivocally as mediating their beneficial activity. Recently, interest has focused on actions of SAS and 5-ASA on the various enzymes of the arachidonic acid cascade. Mucosa of patients with inflammatory bowel disease generates excessive amounts of cyclooxygenase products such as prostaglandins (PG) as well as 5-lipoxygenase products such as leukotriene (LT) B4 and sulfidopeptide-LT. Both PG and LT exert proinflammatory actions and are potentially important mediators of mucosal inflammation. SAS and 5-ASA, however, have been found to inhibit PG synthesis under certain experimental conditions only, while increasing PG formation under other conditions. While SAS was found to inhibit colonic LTB4 synthesis, 5-ASA was reported to selectively affect the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonate metabolism in this tissue. Our results demonstrate that, like the parent compound, the metabolite 5-ASA in a dose-dependent manner inhibits release of LTB4 and sulfidopeptide-LT from normal human colonic mucosa (IC50 3.5 and 3.7 mmol/liter, respectively). Indomethacin, which has no efficacy in the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, on the other hand, selectively inhibited PGE2 formation in normal and inflamed colonic mucosa (IC50 1.7 and 1.0 mmol/liter, respectively) without reducing synthesis of LTB4 or sulfidopeptide-LT.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Starch gel electrophoresis of allozymes extracted from mycelium grown in submerged culture was used to identify and catalog lines of Lentinula edodes. Variability at 11 multiallelic loci was used to separate 91 lines collected from worldwide sources into 35 genotypic classes. Genotypic class 2 was the largest, with 18 lines; 18 other genotypic classes contained more than one line; and 16 genotypic classes contained only one line each. Three hybrids, with potential commercial value, were produced by crossing single-spore-derived monokaryons of different genotypes. Each of the three hybrids could be differentiated from the above 35 classes based on their multilocus allelic combinations. Multilocus enzyme analysis should aid the description, registration, and licensing of improved shiitake cultivars.

Abstract
Fifteen classical linkage groups were identified in two salmonid species (Salmo trutta and Salmo gairdneri) and three fertile, interspecific hybrids (S. gairdneri X Salmo clarki, Salvelinus fontinalis X Salvelinus namaycush and S. fontinalis X Salvelinus alpinus) by backcrossing multiply heterozygous individuals. These linkage relationships of electrophoretically detected, protein coding loci were highly conserved among species. The loci encoding the enzymes appeared to be randomly distributed among the salmonid chromosomes. Recombination frequencies were generally greater in females than in males. In males, certain linkage groups were pseudolinked with other linkage groups, presumably because of facultative multivalent pairing and directed disjunction of chromosomes. Five such pseudolinkage groups were identified and they also appeared to be common among species and hybrids. Duplicate loci were never classically linked with each other, although some exhibited pseudolinkage and some showed evidence of exchanging alleles. Gene-centromere recombination frequencies estimated from genotypic distributions of gynogenetic offspring were consistent with map locations inferred from female intergenic recombination frequencies. These linkage relationships support the contention that all extant salmonids arose from a common tetraploid progenitor and that this progenitor may have been a segmental allotetraploid.

Abstract
Two polymorphic, duplicated loci (fumarase-1,2 and phosphoglucomutase-3,4), previously undescribed in salmonids, were examined in lake trout to determine their electrophoretic expression, mode of inheritance, and linkage associations. Both loci appear to be located on chromosomes which show residual tetrasomy. Neither locus pair shows joint segregation with other loci examined or with each other.
