Abstract
We have developed and report on a simplified cardiopulmonary bypass technique for experiments on implantable ventricular assist devices in calves. We used an electromechanical implantable ventricular assist device with a double cylindrical cam in three calves. Cannulas for the ventricular assist system were designed to be inserted between the left atrium and the descending aorta. We used the outflow cannula of the ventricular assist device, anastomosed to the descending aorta, as a temporary arterial return route for the cardiopulmonary bypass. A cannula for venous drainage was iserted into the right ventricle through the pulmonary artery. There were no problems related to the procedure and the cardiopulmonary bypass was succesful. In conclusion, this simplified cardiopulmonary bypass technique without neck incision in calves, as used in developmental work involving implantable ventricular assist devices, can be reliably performed.

Abstract
Little is known about differential gene expression at the molecular level in polyploid plants. Here, we describe the molecular analysis of ApxSC (cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase from a polyploid strawberry) genes. Fifty-three cDNAs encoding ApxSC were isolated from a strawberry fruit cDNA library. These clones were categorized (i) into nine homologous (95 to 99%) gene groups on the basis of their nucleotide sequences and (ii) into four groups of similar (> 98%) polypeptides on the basis of their deduced amino acid sequences. Sequence variation among the gene groups was dispersed throughout the gene, while differences among the polypeptide groups were observed only at three amino acid positions (9, 63, and 233). These results imply that the ApxSC genes show co-dominant expression resulting from multiple alleles. This hypothesis is supported by genomic blots and primer extension analyses.

Abstract
The purpose of this morphological study was to investigate the relation between the meridian, meridian points and viscera using neuroanatomical tracers. The common locations of the spinal cord and brain projecting to the stomach and Zusanli were observed following injection of CTB (cholera toxin B subunit) and pseudorabies viruses (PRV-Ba, Bartha strain and PRV-Ba-Gal, galactosidase insertion) into the stomach and Zusanli (ST36). After 4-5 days of survival following injection into twelve rats, they were perfused, and their spinal cords and brains were frozen sectioned (30 microm). These sections were stained by X-gal histochemical, CTB and PRV-Ba immunohistochemical staining methods, and examined with the light microscope. The results were as follows: Commonly labeled medulla oblongata regions were dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve (DMV), nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) and area postrema (AP) following injection of CTB and PRV-Ba-Gal into stomach and Zusanli, respectively. In the spinal cord, commonly labeled neurons were found in thoracic, lumbar and sacral spinal segments. Densely labeled areas were found in lamina IV, V, VII (intermediolateral nucleus) and X of the spinal cord. In the brain, commonly labeled neurons were found in the Al noradrenalin cells/Cl adrenalin cells/caudoventrolateral reticular nucleus, dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve, nucleus tractus solitarius, area postrema, raphe obscurus nucleus, raphe pallidus nucleus, raphe magnus nucleus, gigantocellular nucleus, locus coeruleus, parabrachial nucleus, Kolliker-Fuse nucleus, A5 cell group, central gray matter, paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, lateral hypothalamic nucleus, retrochiasmatic hypothalamic nucleus, bed nucleus of stria terminalis and amygdaloid nucleus. Thus central autonomic center project both to the stomach and Zusanli. These morphological results suggest that there is a commonality of CNS cell groups in brain controlling stomach (viscera) and Zusanli (limb).

Abstract
Carbofuran (CF) is one of the most widely used carbamate pesticides in the world applied for insect and nematode control. Due to its widespread use in agriculture and households, contamination of food, water, and air has become serious, and consequently adverse health effects are inevitable in humans, animals, wildlife and fish. It has been reported that CF alone or in combination with other carbamate insecticides influences the level of reproductive and metabolic hormones such as thyroxine and corticosterone, and results in impairment of endocrine, immune and behavioral functions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of CF and its metabolite, the N-nitroso derivative N-nitrosocarbofuran (NOCF), on genotoxicity, cell growth, cell cycle and apoptosis of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (CHL) cells. NOCF, but not CF, induced genotoxicity determined by Ames test. NOCF inhibited the growth of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (CHL) cells with an IC(50) of 12.8 microM. NOCF induced apoptosis of CHL cells, which was demonstrated by morphological changes, DNA fragmentation and flow cytometric analysis. Treatment of CHL cells with NOCF induced significant G(2)/M cell cycle arrest. Caspase-3, an executioner of apoptosis was also activated by the treatment of CHL cells with NOCF. These results suggest that NOCF, that is an important metabolite of CF, leads to the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in CHL cells.

Abstract
This paper describes the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of a novel anti-ischemic compound, (2S,3S,4R)-N-(6-amino-3,4-dihydro-2-dimethoxymethyl-3-hydroxy-2-methyl-2H-benzopyranyl)-N'-benzyl-N"-cyanoguanidine (33), and the structure-activity relationships leading to the discovery of this compound. Compound 33 significantly reduced the myocardial infarct zone to area at risk (IZ/AAR) in the ischemic myocardium rat model with high cardioselectivity. Since the cardioprotective effect of compound 33 is reversed by ATP-sensitive potassium channel (K(ATP)) blockers, its anti-ischemic effect appears to be at least mediated by K(ATP) opening. In addition, compound 33 shows good protective activity on neuronal cells against oxidative stress, and therefore it is suggested that compound 33 may have therapeutic potential both in cardio- and in neuroprotection.

Abstract
Two Arabidopsis thaliana extragenic mutations that suppress NaCl hypersensitivity of the sos3-1 mutant were identified in a screen of a T-DNA insertion population in the genetic background of Col-0 gl1 sos3-1. Analysis of the genome sequence in the region flanking the T-DNA left border indicated that sos3-1 hkt1-1 and sos3-1 hkt1-2 plants have allelic mutations in AtHKT1. AtHKT1 mRNA is more abundant in roots than shoots of wild-type plants but is not detected in plants of either mutant, indicating that this gene is inactivated by the mutations. hkt1-1 and hkt1-2 mutations can suppress to an equivalent extent the Na(+) sensitivity of sos3-1 seedlings and reduce the intracellular accumulation of this cytotoxic ion. Moreover, sos3-1 hkt1-1 and sos3-1 hkt1-2 seedlings are able to maintain [K(+)](int) in medium supplemented with NaCl and exhibit a substantially higher intracellular ratio of K(+)/Na(+) than the sos3-1 mutant. Furthermore, the hkt1 mutations abrogate the growth inhibition of the sos3-1 mutant that is caused by K(+) deficiency on culture medium with low Ca(2+) (0.15 mM) and <200 microM K(+). Interestingly, the capacity of hkt1 mutations to suppress the Na(+) hypersensitivity of the sos3-1 mutant is reduced substantially when seedlings are grown in medium with low Ca(2+) (0.15 mM). These results indicate that AtHKT1 is a salt tolerance determinant that controls Na(+) entry and high affinity K(+) uptake. The hkt1 mutations have revealed the existence of another Na(+) influx system(s) whose activity is reduced by high [Ca(2+)](ext).

Abstract
GSTP1 CpG island hypermethylation is the most common somatic genome alteration described for human prostate cancer (PCA); lack of GSTP1 expression is characteristic of human PCA cells in vivo. We report here that loss of GSTP1 function may have been selected during the pathogenesis of human PCA. Using a variety of techniques to detect GSTP1 CpG island DNA hypermethylation in PCA DNA, we found only hypermethylated GSTP1 alleles in each PCA cell in all but two PCA cases studied. In these two cases, CpG island hypermethylation was present at only one of two GSTP1 alleles in PCA DNA. In one of the cases, DNA hypermethylation at one GSTP1 allele and deletion of the other GSTP1 allele were evident. In the other case, an unmethylated GSTP1 allele was detected, accompanied by abundant GSTP1 expression. GSTP1 CpG island DNA hypermethylation was responsible for lack of GSTP1 expression by LNCaP PCA cells: treatment of the cells with 5-azacytidine (5-aza-C), an inhibitor of DNA methyltransferases, reversed the GSTP1 promoter DNA hypermethylation, activated GSTP1 transcription, and restored GSTP1 expression. GSTP1 promoter activity, assessed via transfection of GSTP1 promoter-CAT reporter constructs in LNCaP cells, was inhibited by SssI-catalyzed CpG dinucleotide methylation. Remarkably, although selection for loss of GSTP1 function may be inferred for human PCA, GSTP1 did not act like a tumor suppressor gene, as LNCaP cells expressing GSTP1, either after 5-aza-C treatment or as a consequence of transfection with GSTP1 cDNA, grew well in vitro and in vivo. Perhaps, GSTP1 inactivation may render prostatic cells susceptible to additional genome alterations, caused by electrophilic or oxidant carcinogens, that provide a selective growth advantage.

Abstract
The C(4)-Pdk gene encoding the C(4) enzyme pyruvate, orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK) of maize (Zea mays cv Golden Cross Bantam) was introduced into the C(3) plant, rice (Oryza sativa cv Kitaake). When the intact maize C(4)-Pdk gene, containing its own promoter and terminator sequences and exon/intron structure, was introduced, the PPDK activity in the leaves of some transgenic lines was greatly increased, in one line reaching 40-fold over that of wild-type plants. In a homozygous line, the PPDK protein accounted for 35% of total leaf-soluble protein or 16% of total leaf nitrogen. In contrast, introduction of a chimeric gene containing the full-length cDNA of the maize PPDK fused to the maize C(4)-Pdk promoter or the rice Cab promoter only increased PPDK activity and protein level slightly. These observations suggest that the intron(s) or the terminator sequence of the maize gene, or a combination of both, is necessary for high-level expression. In maize and transgenic rice plants carrying the intact maize gene, the level of transcript in the leaves per copy of the maize C(4)-Pdk gene was comparable, and the maize gene was expressed in a similar organ-specific manner. These results suggest that the maize C(4)-Pdk gene behaves in a quantitatively and qualitatively similar way in maize and transgenic rice plants. The activity of the maize PPDK protein expressed in rice leaves was light/dark regulated as it is in maize. This is the first reported evidence for the presence of an endogenous PPDK regulatory protein in a C(3) plant.

Abstract
We observed residual stress relaxation by CO(2) laser irradiation in the cores of optical fibers by direct stress measurement. It was demonstrated that the mechanical stress was fully relaxed by CO(2) laser irradiation and that the remaining stress in the core was thermal stress that was due to a mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficients of the fiber core and cladding. The net core stresses after relaxation were 17, 68, and 203 MPa in Ge-B-codoped fibers drawn at 0.53, 1.38, and 3.48 N, respectively. Changes in the refractive indices of the cores as a result of residual stress relaxation were also estimated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND IgE-mediated allergic reactions caused by mosquito bites are a common problem all over the world. This study was undertaken to determine IgE levels in subjects, to elucidate human IgE and mouse IgG1 binding patterns and to investigate the cross-reactivity of salivary gland antigens with three mosquitoes. METHODS Mosquito larvae of Aedes togoi, Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Culex pipiens pallens were collected and maintained in the laboratory. Salivary gland extracts (SGE) and whole-body extracts (WBE) were prepared from female mosquitoes of each species. Mosquito-specific IgE levels in 17 subjects were measured by ELISA. Polypeptide patterns were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Immunoblotting was performed with sensitized human and immune mouse sera, and elucidated human IgE and mouse IgG1 binding patterns to SGE. For the determination of cross-reactivity to the three types of mosquitoes, ELISA inhibition tests were performed using sera from mice sensitized by biting of A. togoi. RESULTS The 9 sera out of 12 with positive skin reactions to SGE of A. togoi by skin prick test showed significantly higher anti-mosquito SGE IgE levels than in those without skin reactions. Protein band patterns of the SGE and WBE of the three species were different from one another. Specific human IgE reacted to the protein in SGE of 30.5, 33, 37 and 57.5 kD from A. togoi, of 38, 43 an 68 kD from C. tritaeniorhynchus, and of 23, 33, 34, 43, 44, 60, 74 and 93 kD from C. pipiens pallens. There were specific mouse IgG1 reactions to the bands of 30.5, 33, 37 and 57.5 kD in the SGE of A. togoi. The ELISA inhibition studies disclosed almost no cross-reactivities between A. togoi, C. tritaeniorhynchus and C. pipiens pallens. CONCLUSIONS Immunoblot analysis disclosed that allergenic proteins in the SGE of mosquitoes and their patterns were remarkably similar between human and mouse sera to the SGE of A. togoi. Species-shared allergens may not exist among the three mosquito species prevalent in Korea.

Abstract
This study was aimed to evaluate renal dysfunction during three weeks after the burn injuries in 12 patients admitted to the Hallym University Hankang Medical Center with flame burn injuries (total body surface area, 20-40%). Parameters assessed included 24-hr urine volume, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, total urinary protein, urinary microalbumin, 24-hr urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity, and urinary malondialdehyde (MDA). Statistical analysis was performed using repeated measures ANOVA test. The 24-hr urine volume, creatinine clearance, and urinary protein significantly increased on day 3 post-burn and fell thereafter. The urine microalbumin excretion showed two peak levels on day 0 post-burn and day 3. The 24-hr urinary NAG activity significantly increased to its maximal level on day 7 post-burn and gradually fell thereafter. The urinary MDA progressively increased during 3 weeks after the burn injury. Despite recovery of general renal function through an intensive care of burn injury, renal tubular damage and lipid peroxidation of the renal tissue suggested to persist during three weeks after the burn. Therefore, a close monitoring and intensive management of renal dysfunction is necessary to prevent burn-induced acute renal failure as well as to lower mortality in patients with major burns.

Abstract
In the present study, the effects of vitamins E and C on the levels of neurotransmitters and acetylcholinesterase activity in the brains of rats treated with scopolamine, an inducer of dementia, were examined. Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats at the age of 5 wk were divided into five groups after 1 wk of adaptation and fed five different diets for 6 wk: a no-scopolamine group, which was a scopolamine-untreated group fed only a basal diet: a scopolamine-treated group fed a basal diet; a vitamin E-supplemented scopolamine-treated group: a vitamin C-supplemented scopolamine-treated group; and a vitamins E and C-supplemented scopolamine-treated group. Scopolamine was twice administered by intraperitoneal injection (300 mg/kg, body weight), 3 d and 20 min prior to sacrifice. Brain acetylcholinesterase activity was markedly reduced by scopolamine injection. However, the supplementation of vitamins E and C in the diet significantly increased the reduced brain acetylcholinesterase activity up to the level of the scopolamine-untreated group. Brain serotonin concentration in the vitamin C-supplemented scopolamine-treated group was significantly higher than that in the scopolamine-treated group. However, there were no significant differences in brain dopamine and norepinephrine concentrations among all groups. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin E and/or vitamin C might be useful in maintaining brain acetylcholinesterase activity at the normal level and serotonin concentration for some extent under the condition to induce dementia by scopolamine administration.

Abstract
The inhibitory effect of rotundifuran, a labdane type diterpene isolated from the fruit of Vitex rotundifolia, on the proliferation of human myeloid leukaemia HL-60 cells was examined. The concentration required for 50% inhibition of the growth after 96 h was 22.5 microM. The mode of cell death induced by rotundifuran was found to be apoptosis, which was judged by the morphological alteration of the cells and by the detection of DNA fragmentation using agarose gel electrophoresis. The degree of apoptosis was quantified by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay and flow cytometric analysis. These results suggest that rotundifuran may be used as a potential chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent.

Two genes encoding beta-galactosidase isoenzymes, beta-galI and beta-galIII, from Bifidobacterium infantis HL96 were revealed on 3.6- and 2.4-kb DNA fragments, respectively, by nucleotide sequence analysis of the two fragments. beta-galI (3,069 bp) encodes a 1,022-amino-acid (aa) polypeptide with a predicted molecular mass of 113 kDa. A putative ribosome binding site and a promoter sequence were recognized at the 5' flanking region of beta-galI. Further upstream a partial sequence of an open reading frame revealed a putative lactose permease gene transcribing divergently from beta-galI. The beta-galIII gene (2,076 bp) encodes a 691-aa polypeptide with a calculated molecular mass of 76 kDa. A rho-independent transcription terminator-like sequence was found 25 bp downstream of the termination codon. The amino acid sequences of beta-GalI and beta-GalIII are homologous to those found in the LacZ and the LacG families, respectively. The acid-base, nucleophilic, and substrate recognition sites conserved in the LacZ family were found in beta-GalI, and a possible acid-base site proposed for the LacG family was located in beta-GalIII, which featured a glutamate at residue 160. The coding regions of the beta-galI and beta-galIII genes were each cloned downstream of a T7 promoter for overexpression in Escherichia coli. The molecular masses of the overexpressed proteins, as estimated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels, agree with their predicted molecular weights. beta-GalI and beta-GalIII were specific for beta-D-anomer-linked galactoside substrates. Both are more active in response to ONPG (o-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside) than in response to lactose, particularly beta-GalIII. The galacto-oligosaccharide yield in the reaction catalyzed by beta-GalI at 37 degrees C in 20% (wt/vol) lactose solution was 130 mg/ml, which is more than six times higher than the maximum yield obtained with beta-GalIII. The structure of the major trisaccharide produced by beta-GalI catalysis was characterized as O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-3)-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-4)-D-glucopyranose (3'-galactosyl-lactose).

Abstract
For the production of oil-desulfurizing biocatalyst, a two-stage fermentation strategy was adopted, in which the cell growth stage and desulfurization activity induction stage were separated. Sucrose was found to be the optimal carbon source for the growth of Gordonia nitida CYKS1. Magnesium sulfate was selected to be the sulfur source in the cell growth stage. The optimal ranges of sucrose and magnesium sulfate were 10-50 and 1-2.5 g x L(-1), respectively. Such a broad optimal concentration of sucrose made the fed-batch culture easy, while the sucrose concentration was maintained between 10-20 g x L(-1) in the actual operation. As a result, 92.6 g x L(-1) of cell mass was acquired by 120 h of fed-batch culture. This cell mass was over three times higher than a previously reported result, though the strain used was different. The desulfurization activity of the harvested cells from the first stage culture was induced by batch cultivation with dibenzothiophene as the sole sulfur source. The optimal induction time was found to be about 4 h. The resting-cell biocatalyst made from the induced cells was applied for the deep desulfurization of a diesel oil. It was observed that the sulfur content of the diesel oil decreased from 250 mg-sulfur x L-oil(-1) to as low as 61 mg-sulfur x L-oil(-1) in 20 h. It implied that the biocatalyst developed in this study had a good potential to be applied to a deep desulfurization process to produce ultra-low-sulfur fuel oils.

Abstract
Certain cytokines may contribute to the sequence of events that lead to meningeal inflammation in bacterial meningitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of children with bacterial meningitis and aseptic meningitis of different etiologies. We determined the concentrations of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) in the CSF of 171 specimens of 144 patients whose cases were classified as follow: bacterial meningitis (n=23), aseptic meningitis (n=26) and non-meningitis (n=95). The detectable IL-1beta concentration (> or =20 pg/ml) in the bacterial meningitis, aseptic meningitis and non-meningitis groups were observed with 78.3%, 3.8%, and 8.4%, respectively. Significantly higher serum IL-1beta concentrations were detected in those with bacterial meningitis than those with aseptic meningitis (538.93+/-605.32 pg/ml vs 2.52+/-11.57 pg/ml; P<0.001) or among non-meningitis subjects (2.90+/-11.91 pg/ml; P<0.001). The mean TNF-alpha concentration was 148.74+/-338.77 pg/ml. There was significantly more TNF-alpha than aseptic meningitis (6.85+/-17.93 pg/ml; P<0.001) or non-meningitis (7.67+/-16.07 pg/ml; P<0.001). With regard to diagnosis, measurement of IL-1beta and TNF-alpha levels showed sensitivities of 78% and 74%, respectively; specificities of 96% and 81%, respectively. It is suggested that the levels of these cytokines, especially IL-1beta and TNF-alpha, are useful markers for distinguishing bacterial meningitis from aseptic meningitis.

Abstract
Pulsatile tinnitus is a rarely occurring symptom of vascular origin. Most frequently, the symptoms are due to an arteriovenous malformation, to a tumor of the jugular glomus or to a local arterial stenosis. A 39-yr-old Korean male suffering from pulsatile tinnitus of the left ear was diagnosed to have dural arteriovenous malformation of the jugular bulb. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography revealed a high-velocity vascular lesion encroaching the internal jugular vein and sigmoid sinuses. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated a dural arteriovenous malformation involving the jugular bulb. The arterial supply was from the neuromeningeal branch of the left ascending pharyngeal artery and inferior tympanic artery. Stenosis of the left jugular vein caused retrograde venous drainage through the contralateral transverse sinus. Superselective embolization of these feeding arteries was successfully performed using 25% mixture of N-butylcyanoacrylate and lipiodol. In postembolization period, his complaints of pulsatile tinnitus and buzzing noise behind his left ear disappeared.

Abstract
A new gene, pqrA, conferring paraquat resistance to the heterologous host Escherichia coli, from a chromosomal DNA library of Ochrobactrum anthropi JW2, was cloned and analyzed. Cells of E. coli transformed with a plasmid carrying the pqrA gene showed elevated resistance to paraquat, but not to hydrogen peroxide. The predicted amino acid sequence of the PqrA polypeptide showed 71% identity with mll7495 hypothetical membrane protein in Mesorhizobium loti, 49% identity with PA2269 protein in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and significant identity with other previously reported drug transport proteins. The hydropathy pattern of the PqrA polypeptide showed a significant homology to those of 12-transmembrane-segment (TMS) family export proteins. Immunoblot analysis demonstrated that the PqrA protein found in the membrane protein fraction of O. anthropi JW2 has a molecular mass of 42 kDa. These results suggest that the PqrA protein is a membrane protein that plays an important role in protecting cells against paraquat toxicity.

Abstract
The relevance of NADH-cytochrome b(5) reductase to the NADH-dependent reduction of D-erythroascorbyl free radical was investigated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. MCR1, which is known to encode NADH-cytochrome b(5) reductase in S. cerevisiae, was disrupted by the insertion of URA3 gene into the gene of MCR1. In the mcr1 disruptant cells, the activity of NADH-D-erythroascorbyl free radical reductase almost disappeared and the intracellular level of D-erythroascorbic acid was about 11% of that of the congenic wild-type strain. In the transformant cells carrying MCR1 in multicopy plasmid, the intracellular level of D-erythroascorbic acid and the activity of NADH-D-erythroascorbyl free radical reductase increased up to 1.7-fold and 2.1-fold, respectively. Therefore, it indicated that the MCR1 product, mitochondrial NADH-cytochrome b(5) reductase, plays a key role in the NADH-dependent reduction of D-erythroascorbyl free radical in S. cerevisiae. On the other hand, the mcr1 disruptant cells were hypersensitive to hydrogen peroxide and menadione, and overexpression of MCR1 made the cells more resistant against oxidative stress. These results suggested that the mitochondrial NADH-cytochrome b(5) reductase functions as NADH-D-erythroascorbyl free radical reductase and plays an important role in the response to oxidative damage in S. cerevisiae.

Abstract
The fumigant toxicity of various volatile constituents of essential oils extracted from sixteen Korean spices and medicinal plants towards the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), was determined. The most potent toxicity was found in the essential oil from Mentha arvensis L. var piperascens (LC50 = 45.5 microliters litre-1 air). GC-MS analysis of essential oil from M arvensis showed it to be rich in menthol (63.2%), menthone (13.1%) and limonene (1.5%), followed in abundance by beta-pinene (0.7%), alpha-pinene (0.6%) and linalool (0.2%). Treatment of S oryzae with each of these terpenes showed menthone to be most active (LC50 = 12.7 microliters litre-1 air) followed by linalool (LC50 = 39.2 microliters litre-1 air) and alpha-pinene (LC50 = 54.9 microliters litre-1 air). Studies on inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity of S oryzae showed menthone to have a nine-fold lower inhibitory effect than menthol, despite menthone being 8.1-fold more toxic than menthol to the rice weevil. Different modes of toxicity of these monoterpenes towards S oryzae are discussed.

Abstract
Shikunshito-Kamiho (SKTK) is a traditional Chinese medicine composed of eight crude drugs (Ginseng Radix, Hoelen, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Prunellae Spica, Ostreae Testa, Laminaria Thallus, Sargassum). We investigated the effects of SKTK on pH, ammonia, fecal enzymes such as beta-glucuronidase, tryptophanase, urease, and formation aberrant crypt foci in the colon carcinogenesis model induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Water extract of SKTK was administered orally for 5 weeks to DMH-treated mice as 0.5% and 1.5% of the diet. Beta-glucuronidase, pH and tryptophanase were significantly inhibited after treatment of 0.5% and 1.5% SKTK, while urease was significantly reduced only during and after treatment of 1.5% SKTK as compared with control data. However, the ammonia concentration wasn't different in SKTK treated groups from control group. The incidence number of aberrant crypts foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts/focus in colon was significantly decreased by 0.5% and 1.5% SKTK mixed diets compared with that in rats treated with DMH alone. These results suggest that SKTK exterts anticarcinogenic activity on experimental murine colorectal cancer.

Abstract
An experiment to study the role of contact-activation leukocyte sequestration in the formation of ischaemia-reperfusion injury (I-R injury) was carried out. The study was conducted using light and electron microscopic analyses in an ovine cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) model using a membrane oxygenator. Five adult sheep were used in the study. The CPB circuitry consisted of a roller pump and a membrane oxygenator. During CPB, flow rates ranged from 50 to 60 ml/kg/min with mild hypothermia. The CPB time was fixed at 120 min. Ten minutes after the start of CPB, total CPB was established. Thereafter, total CPB was performed for 100 min, followed by another 10 min of partial CPB. Lung biopsy specimens for light and electron microscopy were obtained from the upper lobe of the right lung before CPB, 109 min after the start of CPB (just before reperfusion) and 30 min after weaning (after reperfusion). A portion of the lung biopsy specimen was taken for a water content measurement at the same time intervals. For measuring the left and right atrial leukocyte counts, blood samples were taken before thoracotomy, 5 and 109 min after the start of CPB, and 30 and 120 min after weaning. C3a was measured before thoracotomy, 109 minafter the start of CPB, and 30 and 120 min after weaning. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) was checked before thoracotomy, 109 min after the start of CPB and 30 min after weaning. On both light and electron microscopic examination, mild to moderate acute lung change was observed after ischaemia-reperfusion. Interstitial oedema, leakage of erythrocytes into the alveolar space and endothelial cell swelling were the main findings. However, few neutrophils were seen. Water content of the lung showed a slight increase after the start of CPB, but there was no statistical significance. Neither significant differences in the transpulmonary gradients of leukocytes nor a significant complement activation, expressed by C3a levels, was observed. The MDA level did not display a significant change related to lung reperfusion despite an increase in MDA after the start of CPB. These findings indicate that I-R injury during CPB may not be from complement-activation leukocyte sequestration, but from another source of oxygen free radicals related to CPB.

Abstract
Transfer of the herpes simplex virus-thymidine kinase gene, followed by the administration of ganciclovir (HSV-tk/GCV), has been a major approach for cancer gene therapy. We investigated the antitumor effect of the HSV-tk/GCV strategy with the rat orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) model and the tumor-selective gene delivery by an adenovirus-mediated gene transfer through the hepatic artery. The complete antitumor effect was demonstrated, after the treatment with GCV in rat HCC established by the implantation of HSV-tk transferred rat HCC cells. The in vivo bystander effect was also observed. The marked infiltration of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, macrophages and NK cells were found in the tumor area. After the injection of adenovirus carrying the LacZ gene into the hepatic artery, the selective expression of transgene in the tumor cell was achieved. These findings indicate that the HSV-tk/GCV strategy, using an adenoviral vector, could be a promising avenue for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
Two cDNA clones encoding ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylases have been isolated from fruit and leaf cDNA libraries of Citrus (Citrus unshiu Mac. cv. Miyagawa) in which one was designated as agpS for the small subunit and the other as agpL for the large subunit. Both cDNAs have uninterrupted open reading frames deriving 57-58 kDa polypeptides. The deduced amino acid sequence of agpS has a unique feature. That is, it lacks a cysteine residue (Cys-12) which is usually conserved in all other dicot enzymes. This is the first report of agpS lacking Cys-12 among dicot small subunits. The expression pattern of both subunits showed a different profile in which leaves synthesized both agpS and agpL more vigorously than those of fruits. During leaf development, the transcripts of agpS and agpL showed a higher expression level at younger stages. During fruit development, the expression level of both subunits was observed to be highest in the mini-green stage, but it decreased in the small green stage and it increased again towards the maturing stage. These results suggest that both subunits may play an important role in the regulation of Citrus fruit and leaf development.

Abstract
Alpha-benzoyloxypaeoniflorin (1), a new antioxidant monoterpene alpha-glycoside anomer was isolated from Paeonia suffruticosa along with known compounds, beta-benzoyloxypaeoniflorin (2), paeonolide, paeoniflorin and mudanpioside H. The structure of 1 has been determined by comparing spectral data with those of beta-benzoyloxypaeoniflorin (2). Compound 1 exhibited moderately potent radical scavenging activity on DPPH radical.
