Intraoperative radiotherapy in breast cancer: Alterations to the tumor microenvironment and subsequent biological outcomes (Review)

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a precise, single high‑dose irradiation directly targeting the tumor bed during surgery. In comparison with traditional external beam RT, it minimizes damage to other normal tissues, ensures an adequate dose to the tumor bed and results in improved cosmetic outcomes and quality of life. Furthermore, IORT offers a shorter treatment duration, lower economic costs and therapeutic efficacy comparable with traditional RT. However, its relatively higher local recurrence rate limits its further clinical applications. Identifying effective radiosensitizing drugs and rational RT protocols will improve its advantages. Furthermore, IORT may not only damage DNA to directly kill breast tumor cells but also alter the tumor microenvironment (TME) to exert a sustained antitumor effect. Specific doses of IORT may exert anti‑angiogenic effects, and consequently antitumor effects, by impacting post‑radiation peripheral blood levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and delta‑like 4. IORT may also modify the postoperative wound fluid composition to continuously inhibit tumor growth, e.g. by reducing components such as microRNA (miR)‑21, miR‑221, miR‑115, oncostatin M, TNF‑β, IL‑6 and IL‑8, and by elevating levels of components such as miR‑223, to inhibit the ability of postoperative wound fluid to induce proliferation, invasion and migration of residual cancer cells. IORT can also modify cancer cell glucose metabolism to inhibit the proliferation of residual tumor cells. In addition, IORT can induce a bystander effect, eliminating the postoperative wound fluid‑induced epithelial‑mesenchymal transition and tumor stem cell phenotype. Insights gained at the molecular level may provide new directions for identifying novel therapeutic targets and approaches. A more comprehensive understanding of the effects of IORT on the breast cancer (BC) TME may further its clinical application. Hence, the present article reviews the primary effects of IORT on BC and its impact on the TME, aiming to offer fresh research perspectives for relevant professionals.

Supershear Rayleigh wave imaging for quantitative assessment of biomechanical properties of brain using air-coupled optical coherence elastography

Recently, supershear Rayleigh waves (SRWs) have been proposed to characterize the biomechanical properties of soft tissues. The SRWs propagate along the surface of the medium, unlike surface Rayleigh waves, SRWs propagate faster than bulk shear waves. However, their behavior and application in biological tissues is still elusive. In brain tissue elastography, shear waves combined with magnetic resonance elastography or ultrasound elastography are generally used to quantify the shear modulus, but high spatial resolution elasticity assessment in 10 μm scale is still improving. Here, we develop an air-coupled ultrasonic transducer for noncontact excitation of SRWs and Rayleigh waves in brain tissue, use optical coherent elastography (OCE) to detect, and reconstruct the SRW propagation process; in combing with a derived theoretical model of SRWs on a free boundary surface, we quantify the shear modulus of brain tissue with high spatial resolution. We first complete validation experiments using a homogeneous isotropic agar phantom, and the experimental results clearly show the SRW is 1.9649 times faster than the bulk shear waves. Furthermore, the propagation velocity of SRWs in both the frontal and parietal lobe regions of the brain is all 1.87 times faster than the bulk shear wave velocity. Finally, we evaluated the anisotropy in different brain regions, and the medulla oblongata region had the highest anisotropy index. Our study shows that the OCE system using the SRW model is a new potential approach for high-resolution assessment of the biomechanical properties of brain tissue.

Enabling Electrochemical-Mechanical Robustness of Ultra-High Ni Cathode via Self-Supported Primary-Grain-Alignment Strategy

The electrochemical-mechanical degradation of ultrahigh Ni cathode for lithium-ion batteries is a crucial aspect that limits the cycle life and safety of devices. Herein, the study reports a facile strategy involving rational design of primary grain crystallographic orientation within polycrystalline cathode, which well enhanced its electro-mechanical strength and Li+ transfer kinetics. Ex situ and in situ experiments/simulations including cross-sectional particle electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), single-particle micro-compression, thermogravimetric analysis combined with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), and finite element modeling reveal that, the primary-grain-alignment strategy effectively mitigates the particle pulverization, lattice oxygen release thereby enhances battery cycle life and safety. Besides the preexisting doping and coating methodologies to improve the stability of Ni-rich cathode, the primary-grain-alignment strategy, with no foreign elements or heterophase layers, is unprecedently proposed here. The results shed new light on the study of electrochemical-mechanical strain alleviation for electrode materials.

A Polymer Acceptor with Grafted Small Molecule Acceptor Unit for Efficient All Polymer Organic Solar Cells

A polymer acceptor, named PX-1, is  designed and synthesized using a polymerization strategy with grafted small molecule acceptors. This design approach allows for the freedom of end groups while maintaining efficient terminal packing, enhancing π-π interactions, and facilitating charge transport. All-polymer organic solar cells based on PM6: PX-1 demonstrate a promising efficiency of 13.55%. The result presents an alternative pathway for the design of high-efficiency polymer acceptors through the careful regulation of small molecule acceptor monomers and linker units.

Sociodemographic Factors Predict Incident Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Brief Review and Empirical Study

OBJECTIVES

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal cognitive aging and dementia that increases the risk of progressive cognitive decline. Early prediction of MCI could be beneficial for identifying vulnerable individuals in the community and planning primary and secondary prevention to reduce the incidence of MCI.

DESIGN

A narrative review and cohort study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

We review the MCI prediction based on the assessment of sociodemographic factors. We included participants from 3 surveys: 8915 from wave 2011/2012 of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), 9765 from the 2011 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), and 1823 from the 2014 Rugao Longevity and Ageing Study (RuLAS).

METHODS

We searched in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science Core Collection between January 1, 2019, and December 30, 2022. To construct the composite risk score, a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model was used. The performance of the score was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Furthermore, the composite risk score was validated in 2 longitudinal cohorts, CLHLS and RuLAS.

RESULTS

We concluded on 20 articles from 892 available. The results suggested that the previous models suffered from several defects, including overreliance on cross-sectional data, low predictive utility, inconvenient measurement, and inapplicability to developing countries. Our empirical work suggested that the area under the curve for a 5-year MCI prediction was 0.861 in CHARLS, 0.797 in CLHLS, and 0.823 in RuLAS. We designed a publicly available online tool for this composite risk score.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Attention to these sociodemographic factors related to the incidence of MCI can be beneficially incorporated into the current work, which will set the stage for better early prediction of MCI before its incidence and for reducing the burden of the disease.

Evaluating the inhibitory effects of Nitrobenzene short-term stress on denitrification performance: Electron behaviors, bacterial and fungal community

Denitrifying system is a feasible way to remove nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) in wastewater. However, the toxicity and mechanisms of NACs to denitrification remain unknown. This study investigated effects of nitrobenzene (NB, a typical NAC) on denitrification in short term. Results showed that NB in 10-50 mg/L groups decreased NO3--N removal efficiency by 9%-24%, but increased nitrous oxide (N2O) generation by 6-17fold. Mechanistic research indicated that NB could deteriorate electron behaviors and disturbed enzyme activities of microbial metabolism and denitrification, leading to a decline in denitrification performance. Structural equation modeling revealed that N2O reductase activity was the core factor in predicting denitrification performance at exposure of NB, with the indirect effects of NADH and electron transport system activity. High-throughput sequencing analysis demonstrated that NB had made an alteration on both bacterial and fungal community structure, as well as their interactions.

Digitalized diagnosis and treatment of pigmented villonodular synovitis of temporomandibular joint: a case report

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare locally aggressive benign tumor in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This paper presents a patient with TMJ-PVNS involving masseteric space, temporal bone, zygomatic process, and mandibular ramus. Digital technique was used to determine the boundary of the lesion and reconstruct the normal glenoid fossa. The temporalis myofascial flap was transplanted between titanium mesh and condyle to reconstruct the disk after the complete resection of the tumor. The patient's facial profile is symmetrical, with a mouth ope-ning of 43 mm. No local recurrence and complications, such as cerebrospinal fluid fistula and encephaloceles, were detected during 30-month follow-up period.

Optimization of Electron Transport Pathway: A Novel Strategy to Solve the Photocorrosion of Ag-Based Photocatalysts

Although Ag-containing photocatalysts exhibit excellent photocatalytic ability, they present great challenges owing to their photocorrosion and ease of reduction. Herein, an electron acceptor platform of Ag2O/La(OH)3/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber was constructed using a heterojunction strategy and electrospinning technology to develop a novel photocatalytic membrane with a redesigned electron transport pathway. Computational and experimental results demonstrate that the optimized electron transport pathway included intercrystal electron transfer induced by the La-O bond between Ag2O and La(OH)3 as well as electron transfer between the catalyst crystal and electrophilic PAN membrane interface. In addition, the photocatalytic performance of the Ag2O/La(OH)3 membrane for tetracycline (TC) removal was still above 97% after five photocatalytic reaction cycles. Furthermore, the carrier life was greatly extended. Mechanistic study revealed that photogenerated holes on the Ag2O/La(OH)3 membrane were the main reactive species in TC degradation. Overall, this study proposes a novel electron transport pathway strategy that effectively solves the problems of photocatalyst photocorrosion and structural instability.

Rich-club reorganization of white matter structural network in schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations following 1 Hz rTMS treatment

The human brain comprises a large-scale structural network of regions and interregional pathways, including a selectively defined set of highly central and interconnected hub regions, often referred to as the "rich club", which may play a pivotal role in the integrative processes of the brain. A quintessential symptom of schizophrenia, auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) have shown a decrease in severity following low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). However, the underlying mechanism of rTMS in treating AVH remains elusive. This study investigated the effect of low-frequency rTMS on the rich-club organization within the brain in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who experience AVH using diffusion tensor imaging data. Through by constructing structural connectivity networks, we identified several critical rich hub nodes, which constituted a rich-club subnetwork, predominantly located in the prefrontal cortices. Notably, our findings revealed enhanced connection strength and density within the rich-club subnetwork following rTMS treatment. Furthermore, we found that the decreased connectivity within the subnetwork components, including the rich-club subnetwork, was notably enhanced in patients following rTMS treatment. In particular, the increased connectivity strength of the right median superior frontal gyrus, which functions as a critical local bridge, with the right postcentral gyrus exhibited a significant correlation with improvements in both positive symptoms and AVH. These findings provide valuable insights into the role of rTMS in inducing reorganizational changes within the rich-club structural network in schizophrenia and shed light on potential mechanisms through which rTMS may alleviate AVH.

Synthesis of Composite Titanate Photocatalyst via Molten Salt Processing and Its Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Photocatalysis plays a pivotal role in environmental remediation and energy production and improving the efficiency of photocatalysts, yet enhancing its efficiency remains a challenge. Titanate has been claimed to be a very promising material amongst various photocatalysts in recent years. In this work, a novel composite photocatalyst of sodium titanate and potassium titanate was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal and molten salt calcination method. Low melting point nitrate was added in the calcination process, which helps reduce the calcination temperature. The as-prepared composite sample showed excellent photocatalytic performance compared with commercial P25 in the visible light range. According to the characterization of XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, UV-Vis, and photocatalytic property testing, the composite's photocatalytic performance results are due to the dual optimization brought about by the layered structure and composite of titanium salts forming a heterojunction. We believe that the composite has significant application potential for the use of titanate in the field of photocatalysis. Notably, this study employed well-documented synthesis methods and adhered to established protocols for experimental procedures.

Customization of an Ultrafast Thiol-Norbornene Photo-Cross-Linkable Hyaluronic Acid-Gelatin Bioink for Extrusion-Based 3D Bioprinting

Light-based three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has been widely studied in tissue engineering. Despite the fact that free-radical chain polymerization-based bioinks like hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) have been extensively explored in 3D bioprinting, the thiol-ene hydrogel system has attracted increasing attention for its ability in building hydrogel scaffolds in an oxygen-tolerant and cell-friendly way. Herein, we report a superfast curing thiol-ene bioink composed of norbornene-modified hyaluronic acid (NorHA) and thiolated gelatin (GelSH) for 3D bioprinting. A new facile approach was first introduced in the synthesis of NorHA, which circumvented the cumbersome steps involved in previous works. Additionally, after mixing NorHA with macro-cross-linker GelSH, the customized NorHA/GelSH bioinks exhibited fascinating superiorities over the gold standard GelMA bioinks, such as an ultrafast curing rate (1-5 s), much lowered photoinitiator concentration (0.03% w/v), and flexible physical performances. Moreover, the NorHA/GelSH hydrogel greatly avoided excess ROS generation, which is important for the survival of the encapsulated cells. Last, compared with the GelMA scaffold, the 3D-printed NorHA/GelSH scaffold not only exhibited excellent cell viability but also guaranteed cell proliferation, revealing its superior bioactivity. In conclusion, the NorHA/GelSH system is a promising candidate for 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering applications.

Phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria improve the growth of Nicotiana benthamiana on lunar regolith simulant by dissociating insoluble inorganic phosphorus

In-situ utilization of lunar soil resources will effectively improve the self-sufficiency of bioregenerative life support systems for future lunar bases. Therefore, we have explored the microbiological method to transform lunar soil into a substrate for plant cultivation. In this study, five species of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria are used as test strains, and a 21-day bio-improving experiment with another 24-day Nicotiana benthamiana cultivation experiment are carried out on lunar regolith simulant. We have observed that the phosphorus-solublizing bacteria Bacillus mucilaginosus, Bacillus megaterium, and Pseudomonas fluorescens can tolerate the lunar regolith simulant conditions and dissociate the insoluble phosphorus from the regolith simulant. The phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria treatment improves the available phosphorus content of the regolith simulant, promoting the growth of Nicotiana benthamiana. Here we demonstrate that the phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria can effectively improve the fertility of lunar regolith simulant, making it a good cultivation substrate for higher plants. The results can lay a technical foundation for plant cultivation based on lunar regolith resources in future lunar bases.

Prevalence and risk factors of diabetic peripheral neuropathy: A population-based cross-sectional study in China

AIMS

To assess the prevalence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and its risk factors in the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) population.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study enroled patients with T2DM between July and December 2017 from 24 provinces in China. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy and its severity were assessed by the Toronto clinical scoring system, neuropathy symptoms score (NSS) and neuropathy disability score. The prevalence of DPN and its risk factors were analysed.

RESULTS

A total of 14,908 patients with T2DM were enroled. The prevalence of DPN was 67.6%. Among 10,084 patients with DPN, 4808 (47.7%), 3325 (33.0%), and 1951 (19.3%) had mild, moderate, and severe DPN, respectively. The prevalence of DPN in females was higher than in males (69.0% vs. 66.6%, P = 0.002). The prevalence of DPN increased with age and course of diabetes and decreased with body mass index (BMI) and education level (all P for trend <0.05). The comorbidities and complications in patients with DPN were higher than in those without DPN, including hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic nephropathy (all P < 0.001). Age, hypertension, duration of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, glycated haemoglobin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate were positively associated with DPN, while BMI, education level, fasting C-peptide, and uric acid were negatively associated with DPN.

CONCLUSIONS

Among patients with T2DM in China, the prevalence of DPN is high, especially in the elderly, low-income, and undereducated patients.

Glyceollins from soybean: Their pharmacological effects and biosynthetic pathways

Flavonoids are a highly abundant class of secondary metabolites present in plants. Isoflavonoids, in particular, are primarily synthesized in leguminous plants within the subfamily Papilionoideae. Numerous reports have established the favorable role of isoflavonoids in preventing a range of human diseases. Among the isoflavonoid components, glyceollins are synthesized specifically in soybean plants and have displayed promising effects in mitigating the occurrence and progression of breast and ovarian cancers as well as other diseases. Consequently, glyceollins have become a sought-after natural component for promoting women's health. In recent years, extensive research has focused on investigating the molecular mechanism underlying the preventative properties of glyceollins against various diseases. Substantial progress has also been made toward elucidating the biosynthetic pathway of glyceollins and exploring potential regulatory factors. Herein, we provide a review of the research conducted on glyceollins since their discovery five decades ago (1972-2023). We summarize their pharmacological effects, biosynthetic pathways, and advancements in chemical synthesis to enhance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of their function and the genes involved in their biosynthetic pathway. Such knowledge may facilitate improved glyceollin synthesis and the creation of health products based on glyceollins.

Non-Linear Optics at Twist Interfaces in h-BN/SiC Heterostructures

Understanding the emergent electronic structure in twisted atomically thin layers has led to the exciting field of twistronics. However, practical applications of such systems are challenging since the specific angular correlations between the layers must be precisely controlled and the layers have to be single crystalline with uniform atomic ordering. Here, an alternative, simple, and scalable approach is suggested, where nanocrystallinetwo-dimensional (2D) film on 3D substrates yields twisted-interface-dependent properties. Ultrawide-bandgap hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin films are directly grown on high in-plane lattice mismatched wide-bandgap silicon carbide (4H-SiC) substrates to explore the twist-dependent structure-property correlations. Concurrently, nanocrystalline h-BN thin film shows strong non-linear second-harmonic generation and ultra-low cross-plane thermal conductivity at room temperature, which are attributed to the twisted domain edges between van der Waals stacked nanocrystals with random in-plane orientations. First-principles calculations based on time-dependent density functional theory manifest strong even-order optical nonlinearity in twisted h-BN layers. This work unveils that directly deposited 2D nanocrystalline thin film on 3D substrates could provide easily accessible twist-interfaces, therefore enabling a simple and scalable approach to utilize the 2D-twistronics integrated in 3D material devices for next-generation nanotechnology.

Generative Adversarial Network-based Noncontrast CT Angiography for Aorta and Carotid Arteries

Background Iodinated contrast agents (ICAs), which are widely used in CT angiography (CTA), may cause adverse effects in humans, and their use is time-consuming and costly. Purpose To develop an ICA-free deep learning imaging model for synthesizing CTA-like images and to assess quantitative and qualitative image quality as well as the diagnostic accuracy of synthetic CTA (Syn-CTA) images. Materials and Methods A generative adversarial network (GAN)-based CTA imaging model was trained, validated, and tested on retrospectively collected pairs of noncontrast CT and CTA images of the neck and abdomen from January 2017 to June 2022, and further validated on an external data set. Syn-CTA image quality was evaluated using quantitative metrics. In addition, two senior radiologists scored the visual quality on a three-point scale (3 = good) and determined the vascular diagnosis. The validity of Syn-CTA images was evaluated by comparing the visual quality scores and diagnostic accuracy of aortic and carotid artery disease between Syn-CTA and real CTA scans. Results CT scans from 1749 patients (median age, 60 years [IQR, 50-68 years]; 1057 male patients) were included in the internal data set: 1137 for training, 400 for validation, and 212 for testing. The external validation set comprised CT scans from 42 patients (median age, 67 years [IQR, 59-74 years]; 37 male patients). Syn-CTA images had high similarity to real CTA images (normalized mean absolute error, 0.011 and 0.013 for internal and external test set, respectively; peak signal-to-noise ratio, 32.07 dB and 31.58 dB; structural similarity, 0.919 and 0.906). The visual quality of Syn-CTA and real CTA images was comparable (internal test set, P = .35; external validation set, P > .99). Syn-CTA showed reasonable to good diagnostic accuracy for vascular diseases (internal test set: accuracy = 94%, macro F1 score = 91%; external validation set: accuracy = 86%, macro F1 score = 83%). Conclusion A GAN-based model that synthesizes neck and abdominal CTA-like images without the use of ICAs shows promise in vascular diagnosis compared with real CTA images. Functional characterization of porcine nucleophosmin (NPM1) gene in promoting the replication of Japanese encephalitis virus and induction of inflammatory cytokines

Nucleophosmin (NPM1) is a multifunctional nucleolar protein that plays a role in cell cycle control, tumorigenesis, induction of the inflammatory cytokine, virus replication, as well as the cellular responses to a variety of stress stimuli. However, its physiological functions in pigs have not been well understood. Here, we cloned the porcine NPM1 (porNPM1) gene and analyzed the functions of the porNPM1 protein in pigs. The full-length porNPM1 gene encoded a 294-amino acid protein with 94.5%-99.3% sequence identity to its orthologues in mammals and was extensively expressed in various pig tissues at the mRNA level. The porNPM1 primarily localizes in the nucleus of ST cells, while it translocates from the nucleus to nucleoplasm upon UV irradiation or H2O2 treatment. Notably, JEV infection blocked the translocation of porNPM1 from the nucleolus to the nucleoplasm. Furthermore, porNPM1 interacted with the JEV C protein and facilitated JEV replication in ST cells. The overexpression and knockdown of porNPM1 respectively enhanced or impaired JEV replication, suggesting the important role of porNPM1 in JEV replication. Additionally, the purified ectodomain of porNPM1 induced the production of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8). Together, these data demonstrated that porNPM1 is involved in cellular stress stimuli, JEV replication, and induction of inflammatory cytokines.

Olfactory impairment and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular outcomes in older adults

Background

Olfactory impairment is common in older adults and may be associated with adverse cardiovascular health; however, empirical evidence is sparse.

Objective

To examine olfaction and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and congestive heart failure (CHF).

Methods

This study included 2,537 older adults (aged 75.6±2.8 years) from the Health ABC Study with olfaction assessed by the 12-item Brief Smell Identification Test in 1999-2000, defined as poor (score ≤8), moderate (9-10), or good (11-12). The outcomes were incident CHD, stroke, and CHF.

Results

During up to 12-year follow-up, 353 incident CHD, 258 stroke, and 477 CHF events were identified. Olfaction was associated with incident CHF, but not with CHD or stroke. After adjusting for demographics, the cause-specific hazard ratio (HR) of CHF was 1.35 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08, 1.70) for moderate and 1.39 (95%CI: 1.09, 1.76) for poor olfaction. With additional adjustment for lifestyle, chronic diseases, and biomarkers of CHF, the HR was modestly attenuated to 1.32 (95%CI: 1.05, 1.66) for moderate and 1.28 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.64) for poor olfaction. These associations were robust in pre-planned subgroup analyses by age, sex, race, and prevalent CHD/stroke. However, the associations appeared to be evident among participants who reported very-good-to-excellent health (HR=1.47 (95%CI: 1.02, 2.13) for moderate and 1.76, (95%CI: 1.20, 2.57) for poor olfaction). In contrast, null association with CHF was found among those with fair-to-poor self-reported health.

Conclusions

In community-dwelling older adults, a single olfaction test was associated with a long-term risk for incident CHF, particularly among those reporting very-good-to-excellent health.

Complete Peripheral Fluorination of the Small-Molecule Acceptor in Organic Solar Cells Yields Efficiency over 19

Due to the intrinsically flexible molecular skeletons and loose aggregations, organic semiconductors, like small molecular acceptors (SMAs) in organic solar cells (OSCs), greatly suffer from larger structural/packing disorders and weaker intermolecular interactions comparing to their inorganic counterparts, further leading to hindered exciton diffusion/dissociation and charge carrier migration in resulting OSCs. To overcome this challenge, complete peripheral fluorination was performed on basis of a two-dimensional (2D) conjugation extended molecular platform of CH-series SMAs, rendering an acceptor of CH8F with eight fluorine atoms surrounding the molecular backbone. Benefitting from the broad 2D backbone, more importantly, strengthened fluorine-induced secondary interactions, CH8F and its D18 blends afford much enhanced and more ordered molecular packings accompanying with enlarged dielectric constants, reduced exciton binding energies and more obvious fibrillary networks comparing to CH6F controls. Consequently, D18:CH8F-based OSCs reached an excellent efficiency of 18.80 %, much better than that of 17.91 % for CH6F-based ones. More excitingly, by employing D18-Cl that possesses a highly similar structure to D18 as a third component, the highest efficiency of 19.28 % for CH-series SMAs-based OSCs has been achieved so far. Our work demonstrates the dramatical structural multiformity of CH-series SMAs, meanwhile, their high potential for constructing record-breaking OSCs through peripheral fine-tuning.

Frequency dependent whole-brain coactivation patterns analysis in Alzheimer's disease

Background

The brain in resting state has complex dynamic properties and shows frequency dependent characteristics. The frequency-dependent whole-brain dynamic changes of resting state across the scans have been ignored in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Objective

Coactivation pattern (CAP) analysis can identify different brain states. This paper aimed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of frequency dependent whole-brain CAPs in AD.

Methods

We utilized a multiband CAP approach to model the state space and study brain dynamics in both AD and NC. The correlation between the dynamic characteristics and the subjects' clinical index was further analyzed.

Results

The results showed similar CAP patterns at different frequency bands, but the occurrence of patterns was different. In addition, CAPs associated with the default mode network (DMN) and the ventral/dorsal visual network (dorsal/ventral VN) were altered significantly between the AD and NC groups. This study also found the correlation between the altered dynamic characteristics of frequency dependent CAPs and the patients' clinical Mini-Mental State Examination assessment scale scores.

Conclusion

This study revealed that while similar CAP spatial patterns appear in different frequency bands, their dynamic characteristics in subbands vary. In addition, delineating subbands was more helpful in distinguishing AD from NC in terms of CAP.

Soliton polarization dynamics in a fiber laser of zero dispersion

Polarization properties of a soliton generated in a fiber laser of zero dispersion are investigated. Similar to the solitons generated in a fiber laser of all anomalous dispersion, the polarization ellipse of the soliton rotated during pulse evolution inside the cavity. The number of rotations relies on the cavity averaged birefringence with nonlinear bias. The larger the cavity averaged birefringence is, the bigger the bias is. When the period multiplying of solitons appears, the number of rotations depends on both multiplying periods and the cavity averaged birefringence. Multiple polarization states can be observed at a fixed position in the cavity depending on the multiplying period. When the cavity length is equal to n times of the averaged beat length, the polarization ellipse of the soliton rotates n∗m times at a fixed position, where m is equal to the multiplying period.

Multiphase Reactions between Organic Peroxides and Sulfur Dioxide in Internally Mixed Inorganic and Organic Particles: Key Roles of Particle Phase Separation and Acidity

Organic peroxides (POs) are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and particularly reactive toward dissolved sulfur dioxide (SO2), yet the reaction kinetics between POs and SO2, especially in complex inorganic-organic mixed particles, remain poorly constrained. Here, we report the first investigation of the multiphase reactions between SO2 and POs in monoterpene-derived secondary organic aerosol internally mixed with different inorganic salts (ammonium sulfate, ammonium bisulfate, or sodium nitrate). We find that when the particles are phase-separated, the PO-S(IV) reactivity is consistent with that measured in pure SOA and depends markedly on the water content in the organic shell. However, when the organic and inorganic phases are miscible, the PO-S(IV) reactivity varies substantially among different aerosol systems, mainly driven by their distinct acidities (not by ionic strength). The second-order PO-S(IV) rate constant decreases monotonically from 5 × 105 to 75 M-1 s-1 in the pH range of 0.1-5.6. Both proton catalysis and general acid catalysis contribute to S(IV) oxidation, with their corresponding third-order rate constants determined to be (6.4 ± 0.7) × 106 and (6.9 ± 4.6) × 104 M-2 s-1 at pH 2-6, respectively. The measured kinetics imply that the PO-S(IV) reaction in aerosol is an important sulfate formation pathway, with the reaction kinetics dominated by general acid catalysis at pH > 3 under typical continental atmospheric conditions.

Electronic Configuration Tuning of Centrally Extended Non-Fullerene Acceptors Enabling Organic Solar Cells with Efficiency Approaching 19

In the molecular optimizations of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), extending the central core can tune the energy levels, reduce nonradiative energy loss, enhance the intramolecular (donor-acceptor and acceptor-acceptor) packing, facilitate the charge transport, and improve device performance. In this study, a new strategy was employed to synthesize acceptors featuring conjugation-extended electron-deficient cores. Among these, the acceptor CH-BBQ, embedded with benzobisthiadiazole, exhibited an optimal fibrillar network morphology, enhanced crystallinity, and improved charge generation/transport in blend films, leading to a power conversion efficiency of 18.94 % for CH-BBQ-based ternary organic solar cells (OSCs; 18.19 % for binary OSCs) owing to its delicate structure design and electronic configuration tuning. Both experimental and theoretical approaches were used to systematically investigate the influence of the central electron-deficient core on the properties of the acceptor and device performance. The electron-deficient core modulation paves a new pathway in the molecular engineering of NFAs, propelling relevant research forward.

RamanCMP: A Raman spectral classification acceleration method based on lightweight model and model compression techniques

In recent years, Raman spectroscopy combined with deep learning techniques has been widely used in various fields such as medical, chemical, and geological. However, there is still room for optimization of deep learning techniques and model compression algorithms for processing Raman spectral data. To further optimize deep learning models applied to Raman spectroscopy, in this study time, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and floating point operations numbers(FLOPs) are used as evaluation metrics to optimize the model, which is named RamanCompact(RamanCMP). The experimental data used in this research are selected from the RRUFF public dataset, which consists of 723 Raman spectroscopy data samples from 10 different mineral categories. In this paper, 1D-EfficientNet adapted to the spectral data as well as 1D-DRSN are proposed to improve the model classification accuracy. To achieve better classification accuracy while optimizing the time parameters, three model compression methods are designed: knowledge distillation using 1D-EfficientNet model as a teacher model to train convolutional neural networks(CNN), proposing a channel conversion method to optimize 1D-DRSN model, and using 1D-DRSN model as a feature extractor in combination with linear discriminant analysis(LDA) model for classification. Compared with the traditional LDA and CNN models, the accuracy of 1D-EfficientNet and 1D-DRSN is improved by more than 20%. The time of the distilled model is reduced by 9680.9s compared with the teacher model 1D-EfficientNet under the condition of losing 2.07% accuracy. The accuracy of the distilled model is improved by 20% compared to the CNN student model while keeping inference efficiency constant. The 1D-DRSN optimized with channel conversion method saves 60% inference time of the original 1D-DRSN model. Feature extraction reduces the inference time of 1D-DRSN model by 93% with 94.48% accuracy. This study innovatively combines lightweight models and model compression algorithms to improve the classification speed of deep learning models in the field of Raman spectroscopy, forming a complete set of analysis methods and laying the foundation for future research.
