Abstract
Following the study on psychomaintenance of asthma by Kinsman, Dirks, and Jones (1977), we adapted the Battery for Asthma Illness Behavior (BAIB) to children. Thirty-four children aged 9.3 to 15.4 years were tested with this modified BAIB. They were scored simultaneously on a semistructured psychological interview. Three groups emerged out of these data: low-, medium-, and high-panic-fear personalities. Patients were also rated with regard to their pulmonary function and clinical status, including medication prescribed. The high-panic-fear personality was significantly associated with a higher intensity of prescribed medication, in particular corticosteroids. These results were independent of spirometric pulmonary measurements. We conclude that doctors may overreact to the exaggerated distress of high-panic-fear patients. Psychotherapy could be of help for this group.

Abstract
Reaction microcalorimetry and equilibrium dialysis have been used to study the binding of AMP and IMP to glycogen phosphorylase b (EC 2.4.1.1) at 25 degrees C and pH 6.9. The combination of both techniques has enabled us to obtain some of the thermodynamic parameters for these binding processes. Four binding sites were found to be present in the dimeric active enzyme for both AMP and IMP. The binding to two high-affinity sites, which, in our opinion, correspond to the activator sites, seems to be cooperative. The two low-affinity sites, which would then correspond to the inhibitor sites, appear to be independent when the nucleotides bind to the enzyme. The negative delta G0 of binding/site at 25 degrees C is the result in all cases of a balance between negative enthalpy and entropy changes. The large differences in delta H and delta S0 for the binding of AMP to the activator sites (-27 and -70 kJ mol-1; -22 and -150 J X K-1 mol-1) suggest the existence of rather extensive conformational changes taking place in phosphorylase b on binding with the allosteric activator. Whereas the affinity of AMP for the activator sites is about 1 order of magnitude higher than that of IMP, the affinity of both nucleotides, including their delta H and delta S0 values, seems to be the same for the inhibitor sites.

Abstract
Different associations of pharmacological agents were tested in the curative treatment of hemorrhagic shock, using as criteria the variations of cerebral biogenic amines (NE, DA, 5-HT) and some of their metabolites (DOPAC, HVA, 5-HIAA). These values were compared to those observed in controls two hours after the reinjection of effused blood. Prior work had led to the use of each component of these therapeutic associations and the reasons having suggested their association are summarized. The results show that the most active association for antagonizing the changes of the above amines and metabolites is that of tyrosine, 15% glucose, insulin and vitamin C. The results are discussed.

Abstract
Rats were subjected to standard conditions of hemorrhagic shock. Animals were sacrificed 5 minutes and two hours after reinjection of blood which had effused into a syringe. The extent of shock was determined by measuring the acid base balance of the serum. Cerebral concentrations of NE, DA, DOPAC, HVA, 5-HT and 5-HIAA were measured and compared to controls. There was a significant decrease of the NE concentration and a highly significant increase of that of DA. Although the DOPAC concentration varied to a slight extent, that of HVA was significantly depressed 5 min after reinjection and exceeded initial values two hours later. It is consistent to interpret these results as a synaptic quiescence of DA utilization, which is no longer methylated by COMT. After two hours, however, extraneuronal DA metabolism was greatly increased, as indicated by the decreased DA concentration and the considerable increase of HVA levels. 5-HT turnover seemed to follow the same temporal variations, decreasing in the acute phase and then increasing during the recovery phase.

Abstract
This study determined the intratester and intertester variability and reliability of goniometric measurements taken by four physical therapists on upper and lower extremity motions of normal male subjects. The same subjects were measured once weekly for four weeks by testers with varied experience in goniometry. Data were analyzed by analyses of variance with repeated measures. Intratester variation for all measurements was less than intertester variation. Further, intertester variation was less for the three upper extremity motions than for those of the lower extremity. These findings indicate the necessity for using the same tester when effects of treatment are evaluated. When the same tester measures the same movement, increases in joint motion of at least three to four degrees determine improvement for either the upper or lower extremity. When more than one tester, however, measures the same movement, increases in joint motion should exceed five degrees for the upper extremity and six degrees for the lower extremity to determine improvement.

Abstract
Lipids secreted form the bovine meibomian glands were assigned to following classes: cholesteryl esters (A) (fatty acyl chain lengths from 15 to 27 carbon atoms), 41%; wax esters, 29%; triacylglycerols, 10%; and cholesteryl ester (B) (fatty acyl chain lengths from 14 to 18 carbons), 15%. The remaining 5% consisted of cholesterol, fatty acids, and highly polar material. Analysis of the lipids showed that only the cholesteryl esters (A) contained fatty acyl chains greater than or equal to C20:0. One third of the fatty acyl chains of the wax esters and the cholesteryl esters (B) was iC15:0. The fatty alcohol moieties of the wax esters were found to be branched chain, C23:0-C27:0. A computer-based programmable gas-liquid chromatographic procedure using 10% apolar 10C on Gas Chrom Q could be used to distinguish both iso and anteiso fatty alcohols and esters of fatty acids.

Abstract
The non-ionic detergent octyl glucoside solubilizes a substantial amount of Streptococcus faecalis membrane protein without loss of the monitored enzyme activities. A secondary detergent, dioctanoyl phophatidycholine, appears to increase the yield of solubilized material. In addition, the effect of ionic strength indicates that it may be possible to selectively extract groups of membrane proteins by their characteristic solubility at different ionic strengths. The solubilized membrane-associated enzymes, ATPase and NADH dehydrogenase, enter polyacrylamide gels as distict species. Electrophoretic studies suggest that there are two membrane-associated ATPase in the Streptococcus faecalis, one which dissociates from the membrane in the absence of Mg-2+ ions and the other which remains particulate until solubilized by detergents. Octyl glucoside can be easily removed from a solution containing solubilized proteins and lipid by dialysis.
