Abstract
Research is ongoing on eighteen cases of Legionellosis, including four deaths, identified among tourists and employees in a hotel in Calp, Spain. Cases occurred during a period of two months, indicating the possibility of a point-source transmission at the hotel. An environmental investigation identified several positive samples in the hotel, which as a precautionary measure, was closed until requested improvements were made. Surveillance measures currently remain active.

Abstract
This study assessed the efficacy of a dry shipper to preserve canine and caprine semen samples. After equilibration, semen straws from six Majorera bucks and five dogs were frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen (LN). Thirty days after freezing, half of the frozen straws were transferred from LN to a dry shipper (DS). Then, thawing was performed at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days and the percentages of motile spermatozoa, acrosome intact spermatozoa and abnormal spermatozoa were determined. The sperm motility (total and progressive) of canine semen samples preserved with DS was quite similar to those preserved in LN, and no significant differences were observed throughout the experimental period. In addition, no differences were observed in the number of abnormal spermatozoa (range: 13.2-19.0%) or intact acrosome (range 91.3-95%) between both storage protocols. Buck semen samples showed equivalent levels of progressive motility (between 50% and 60%) and intact acrosome membrane (around 70%) during the first 3 days of storage in both procedures; however, from the fifth day of storage onwards, a notable decrease in semen quality was observed in the samples preserved in DS, showing a dramatic fall in the semen viability after 7 days of preservation (12.3% and 36.8%, progressive fast spermatozoa and acrosome integrity, respectively). In dog samples, the present study confirmed that seminal quality did not show modifications for the preservation period (7 days), confirming the efficacy of the dry shipper to preserve frozen samples for a short time. However, under the circumstances reported in this study, the sperm quality of buck samples preserved in the dry shipper only held during the first 3 days of storage, and therefore, its practical application could be more limited.

Abstract
Uruguay is the second country of Latin America in prevalence of renal replacement therapies, including functioning kidney allografts. Long-term immunosuppressive therapy is essential for adequate graft function, but results in reduced immunosurveillance leading to an increased risk of complications such as infections and malignancies. A variety of cutaneous manifestations as well as an increase in non-melanoma skin cancers have been reported in this population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency and clinical spectrum of cutaneous manifestations in renal and reno-pancreatic recipients in Uruguay. One hundred renal or reno-pancreatic recipients aged between 21- and 77-years-old were evaluated between September 2009 and September 2010. A total of 104 dermatoses were observed; 68% of the patients had at least one cutaneous manifestation. The most frequent dermatoses were cutaneous side effects due to immunosuppressive treatment (43.3%), followed by infections (27.9%), miscellaneous causes (22.1%), as well as malignant and premalignant lesions (6.7%). This is the first study evaluating dermatological complications in organ transplant recipients in our country. Most of the patients had at least one dermatological manifestation of immunosuppression, including a malignant or pre-malignant lesion, highlighting that this is a high-risk dermatological population. Cancer is one of the most important causes of death in recipients with functioning grafts. Its prevention is a major goal in the care of transplant recipients. Physicians in transplant units should be aware of the importance of dermatological screening and skin cancer surveillance.

Abstract
The influence of sexual stimulation and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) administration on plasma testosterone concentrations was assessed in five male Beagles. Each dog was exposed to three experimental treatments: C treatment (Control, no stimulation), hCG treatment (dogs were SC injected with 1000 IU of hCG) and sexually stimulated (SS) treatment where semen was collected from the males. All dogs were exposed to all treatments, one per week for three consecutive weeks, with a 1 week of rest between treatments. Blood samples were taken with the same time intervals (0, 10, 30, 60 and 120 min) relative to treatments. Plasma testosterone concentrations were determined with a solid-phase I(125) radioimmunoassay. In the control treatment, the testosterone plasma levels did not show significant changes throughout the tested period (mean values ranging between 2.8 and 4.7 ng/ml); the hCG group presented a significant increase (p < 0.05) in plasma testosterone levels 30 min after hCG administration and had the highest value (8.7 ng/ml) at 120 min post-hCG. Finally, the SS group revealed a slight reduction in testosterone concentration immediately after ejaculation, but the values remained nearly unaltered until 120 min after semen collection. When the groups were compared, the hCG group showed higher plasma testosterone values (p < 0.05) than did the C and SS groups, starting at 30 min and continuing until the end of sampling. This study demonstrates that sexual stimulation associated with semen collection does not produce transitory modifications in plasma testosterone concentrations.

Abstract
This work examines the sorption capacity of a natural biomass collected from an irrigation pond. The biomass mainly consisted of a mixture of chlorophyte algae with caducipholic plants. Biosorption experiments were performed in monometallic and bimetallic solutions containing different metals commonly found in industrial effluents (Cd, Cu and Pb). The biosorption process was slightly slower in the binary system comparing with monometallic system which was related to competition phenomena between metal cations in solution. The biosorbent behaviour was quantified by the sorption isotherms fitting the experimental data to mathematical models. In monometallic systems, the Langmuir model showed a better fit with the following sorption order: Cu ~ Pb > Cd; and biomass-metal affinity order: Pb > Cd ~ Cu. In bimetallic systems, the binary-type Langmuir model was used and the sorption order obtained was: Pb ~ Cu > Cd. In addition, the effectiveness of the biomass was investigated in several sorption-desorption cycles using HCl and NaHCO(3). The recovery of metal was higher with HCl than with NaHCO(3), though the sorption uptake of the biomass was sensitively affected by the former desorption agent in subsequent sorption cycles.

Abstract
This study assessed the effect of different semen storage temperatures and the influence of semen pooling in semen viability. In experiment 1, semen samples (n = 30) of five Majorera bucks were individually processed [Individual semen (IS)] and after the first dilution (Tris-yolk extender), semen-diluted aliquots from each male were pooled semen (PS). Thereafter, semen samples (IS and PS) were preserved as fresh semen (37 and 20°C), chilled semen (4°C) and frozen semen. Sperm motility and the percentage of abnormal sperm cells and intact membrane acrosomes were defined. Semen preservation at 20 and 4°C did not modify the quality of spermatozoa for the first 24 h, but the conservation at 37°C caused a dramatic fall in the semen motility from 12 h onwards. Furthermore, the longevity of frozen-thawed semen was limited to 4-6 h. No differences were observed in semen parameters when PS was compared with semen from individual males in any of the preservation protocols assessed. In experiment 2, 120 goats were distributed in four experimental groups: in group fresh individual semen (FIS, n = 30) and group frozen-thawed individual semen (FTIS, n = 30), does were transcervically inseminated with fresh semen and frozen-thawed semen from each individual male, respectively, and in group fresh pooled semen (FPS, n = 30) and group frozen-thawed pooled semen (FTPS, n = 30), goats were transcervically inseminated with FPS and FTPS, respectively. The kidding rate was very close in the FIS and FPS groups (70.0% and 73.7%, respectively), and no significant differences were observed in the fertility rate between FTIS and FTPS. The results of this study confirmed that semen samples may be preserved satisfactorily for 24 h both at 20 and 4°C. In addition, the mixture of semen of different bucks did not significantly modify the semen parameters when compared with semen from individual males.

Abstract
In this research, the polar decomposition (PD) method is applied to experimental Mueller matrices (MMs) measured on two-dimensional microstructured surfaces. Polarization information is expressed through a set of parameters of easier physical interpretation. It is shown that evaluating the first derivative of the retardation parameter, δ, a clear indication of the presence of defects either built on or dug in the scattering flat surface (a silicon wafer in our case) can be obtained. Although the rule of thumb thus obtained is established through PD, it can be easily implemented on conventional surface polarimetry. These results constitute an example of the capabilities of the PD approach to MM analysis, and show a direct application in surface characterization.

Abstract
Reprogramming of somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be achieved by the delivery of a combination of transcription factors, including Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc. Retroviral and lentiviral vectors are commonly used to express these four reprogramming factors separately and obtain reprogrammed iPS cells. Although efficient and reproducible, these approaches involve the time-consuming and labor-intensive production of retroviral or lentiviral particles together with a high risk of working with potentially harmful viruses overexpressing potent oncogenes, such as c-Myc. Here, we describe a simple method to produce bona fide iPS cells from human fibroblasts using poly-β-amino esters as the transfection reagent for the delivery of a single CAG-driven polycistronic plasmid expressing Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, c-Myc, and a GFP reporter gene (OSKMG). We demonstrate for the first time that poly-β-amino esters can be used to deliver a single polycistronic reprogramming vector into human fibroblasts, achieving significantly higher transfection efficiency than with conventional transfection reagents. After a protocol of serial transfections using poly-β-amino esters, we report a simple methodology to generate human iPS cells from human fibroblasts avoiding the use of viral vectors.

Abstract
Fluorescein angiography is an established technique for examining the functional integrity of the retinal microcirculation for early detection of changes due to retinopathy. This paper describes a new method for the registration of large Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope sequences (SLO), where the patient has been injected with a fluorescent dye. This allows the measurement of parameters such as the arteriovenous passage time. Due to the long time needed to acquire these sequences, there will inevitably be eye movement, which must be corrected prior to the application of quantitative analysis. The algorithm described here combines mutual information-based registration and landmark-based registration. The former will allow the alignment of the darkest frames of the sequence, where the dye has not still arrived to the retina, because of its ability to work with images without a preprocessing or segmentation, while the latter uses relevant features (the vessels) extracted by means of a robust creaseness operator, to get a very fast and accurate registration. The algorithm only detects rigid transformations but proves to be robust against the slight alterations derived from the eye location perspective during acquisition. Results were validated by expert clinicians.

Abstract
Since the first studies made by Kerker in the 1970s stating the conditions for null light scattering in certain directions by particles, such conditions have remained unquestioned. The increasing interest in scattering directionality by tuning the optical properties of materials demands a new analysis of this problem. In addition, as has been shown recently, one of Kerker's statements does not comply with the optical theorem. We propose corrected expressions for the null-scattering conditions that satisfy the optical theorem.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the sorption of Fe(III) by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the Acidiphilium 3.2Sup(5) bacterium, which has promising properties for use in microbial fuel cells (MFC). The EPS of A. 3.2Sup(5) was extracted using EDTA. The sorption isotherms were determined using aliquots of purified EPS. The exosubstances loaded with metal were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The sorption uptake approaches to 536.1 +/- 26.6 mg Fe(III) (g EPS)(-1) at an initial ferric concentration of 2.0 g l(-1). The sorption of Fe(III) by EPS can be fitted to the Freundlich model. The sorption process produces hydrated iron (III) oxalate [Fe(OH)(C2O4) x 2H2O] by a reversible reaction (log K = 1.06 +/- 0.16), indicating that a shift in the sorption of the cation can be easily achieved. Know the magnitude and form of iron sorption by EPS in MFC can foresee the potential impact on the metabolism of iron-reducing and iron-oxidazing bacteria and, therefore, on the feasibility of the system.

Abstract
In this research we introduce the formalism of the extension of the discrete dipole approximation to a more general range of tensorial relative permittivity and permeability. Its performance is tested in the domain of applicability of other methods for the case of composite materials (nanoshells). Then, some early results on bianisotropic nanoparticles are presented, to show the potential of the Extended Discrete Dipole Approximation (E-DDA) as a new tool for calculating the interaction of light with bianisotropic scatterers.

Abstract
The present work describes a research approach to the anaerobic bioleaching of Fe(III) ores. Three strains (Serratia fonticola, Aeromonas hydrophila and Clostridium celerecrescens) isolated from an acidic abandoned mine were selected to test their ability to reduce dissimilatory Fe(III). Total iron bio-reduction was achieved after 48 h using either the consortium or the Aeromonas cultures. In the latter case, there was no evidence of precipitates and Fe(II) remained in solution at neutral pH through complex formation with citrate. None of the other cultures tested (mixed culture and the two isolates) exhibited this behaviour. Biotechnologically, this is a very promising result since it obviates the problem associated with undesirable precipitation of iron compounds in Fe(III)-reducing bacterial cultures. The performance of the Aeromonas culture was improved progressively by adaptation to moderately acidic pH values (up to 4.5) and to three different Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides as the sole source of iron: ferrihydrite, hematite and jarosite, commonly found as weathering compounds at mine sites. Dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducers for iron extraction from ores is therefore especially attractive in that acidification of the surrounding area can be minimized.

Abstract
This work reports the effectiveness of sugar-beet pectin xerogels for the removal of heavy metals (cadmium, lead and copper) after multiple batch sorption-desorption cycles, with and without a gels regeneration step. Metals were recovered from xerogel beads without destroying their sorption capability and the beads were successfully reused (nine cycles) without significant loss in both biosorption capacity and biosorbent mass. Metals uptake levelled off or increased after using a 1M CaCl(2) regeneration step after each desorption. Calcium, as a regenerating agent, increased the stability and reusability of the gels repairing the damage caused by the acid and removing the excess protons after each elution providing new binding sites. Abstract
Renal grafts suffer a progressive decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) because of several factors including calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) nephrotoxicity. Switching CNIs to sirolimus may improve this adverse prognosis. We performed a prospective, open-label clinical trial among 18 kidney transplant patients with more than 12 months of evolution (range, 385-1826 days), showing progressive GFR decreases and biopsies with interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IFTA). Immunosuppressive treatment included cyclosporine, ketoconazole, and steroids associated with azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil. After signing an Institutional Review Board-approved written consent, cyclosporine was switched to sirolimus seeking to achieve a trough blood sirolimus concentration of 6-15 ng/mL. Wilcoxon and Student's t-tests were used to compare the values in the annual periods before and after the switch. GFR was estimated by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula. There were no acute rejection episodes. Estimated GFR on the day of the switch was 38.0 +/- 12.1 mL/min. After CNI switch, the slope of the estimated GFR significantly improved from -6.5 +/- 9.2 to 8.1 +/- 14.0 mL/min/year (P < .01). The estimated GFR 1 year after the switch was 47.2 +/- 16.9 mL/min (P = .003 vs baseline). Total expenditures increased. The ratio of post-switch versus baseline total expenditures was 1.93 (95% confidence interval, 1.54-2.31) and the ratio of sirolimus to CNI cost was 2.16 (95% confidence interval, 1.53-2.78). Switching from CNI to sirolimus for kidney transplants with decreasing GFR and a biopsy with IFTA changes, suggesting progressive graft nephropathy, almost doubled total expenses. It is necessary to conduct trials using clinical end points to definitively validate this therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
The availability of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has created extraordinary opportunities for modeling and perhaps treating human disease. However, all reprogramming protocols used to date involve the use of products of animal origin. Here, we set out to develop a protocol to generate and maintain human iPSC that would be entirely devoid of xenobiotics. We first developed a xeno-free cell culture media that supported the long-term propagation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to a similar extent as conventional media containing animal origin products or commercially available xeno-free medium. We also derived primary cultures of human dermal fibroblasts under strict xeno-free conditions (XF-HFF), and we show that they can be used as both the cell source for iPSC generation as well as autologous feeder cells to support their growth. We also replaced other reagents of animal origin (trypsin, gelatin, matrigel) with their recombinant equivalents. Finally, we used vesicular stomatitis virus G-pseudotyped retroviral particles expressing a polycistronic construct encoding Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and GFP to reprogram XF-HFF cells under xeno-free conditions. A total of 10 xeno-free human iPSC lines were generated, which could be continuously passaged in xeno-free conditions and maintained characteristics indistinguishable from hESCs, including colony morphology and growth behavior, expression of pluripotency-associated markers, and pluripotent differentiation ability in vitro and in teratoma assays. Overall, the results presented here demonstrate that human iPSCs can be generated and maintained under strict xeno-free conditions and provide a path to good manufacturing practice (GMP) applicability that should facilitate the clinical translation of iPSC-based therapies.

Abstract
In this paper, the bioreduction of Au(III) to Au(0) using biomass of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus was investigated. The recovery and reduction process took place in two stages with an optimum pH range of 4-9 with a maximum uptake obtained at pH 7. In the first stage, an induction period previous to gold reduction, the variation of pH, redox potential and gold concentration in solution was practically negligible and no color change was observed. In the second stage, the gold reduction was followed by a sharp decrease of gold concentration, pH and redox potential of solution and a color change from yellow to reddish purple. Hydroxyl groups present in the algal polysaccharides were involved in the gold bioreduction. Metallic gold was detected as microprecipitates on the biomass surface and in colloidal form as nanoparticles in the solution. Bioreduction with F. vesiculosus could be an alternative and environmentally friendly process that can be used for recovering gold from dilute hydrometallurgical solutions and leachates of electronic scraps, and for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles of different size and shape.

Abstract
Umbilical-cord occlusion has been proposed for the treatment of twin-reverse arterial perfusion syndrome (TRAP). Transection of the umbilical cord is necessary in patients with monoamniotic or 'pseudomonoamniotic' TRAP to avoid subsequent cord entanglement and demise of the pump twin. We present a case of TRAP in which the umbilical cord was successfully ligated with suture and transected with the Versapoint electrode.
