Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of 12-week exercise programme on ambulatory function, free-living daily physical activity and health-related quality of life in disabled older patients with intermittent claudication. DESIGN Prospective, randomized controlled trial. SETTING University Medical Center and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan. SUBJECTS Thirty-two of 64 patients with Fontaine stage II peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) were randomized to exercise training and 32 to usual care control. Five patients from the exercise group and six patients from the control group dropped out, leaving 27 and 26 patients, respectively, completing the study in each group. INTERVENTIONS Twelve weeks of treadmill exercise training. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Treadmill walking time to onset of claudication pain and to maximal claudication pain, 6-min walk distance, self-reported ambulatory ability and perceived health-related quality of life (QOL). RESULTS Compliance of exercise programme was 83% of the possible sessions. Exercise training increased treadmill walking time to onset of claudication pain by 88% (P < 0.001), time to maximal pain by 70% (P < 0.001), and 6-min walk distance by 21% (P < 0.001). SUBJECTS Perception of health-related QOL improved from 12% to 178% in the exercise group. These improvements were significantly better than the changes in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Significant improvements in claudication following 12-week exercise training in elderly PAOD patients were observed. Increase in treadmill walking time to maximal claudication pain in these patients translated into the improvement of perceived physical health, which enabled the patients to become more functionally independent.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of coronary calcification among moderate- to high-risk Chinese patients and to evaluate the ability of the coronary calcium score determined by electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) to predict angiographic coronary artery disease in this population. We enrolled 163 consecutive patients and analyzed their cardiovascular risk factors, coronary calcium scores and coronary angiogram results. One hundred and twenty-five patients (76.7%) had a positive EBCT scan result (coronary calcium score >0). The prevalence of calcification and the calcium scores showed a graded relation to the number of cardiovascular risk factors and age (p < 0.001 for trend). Coronary calcium scores showed statistically significant differences between patients with angiographic evidence of coronary artery disease and patients with normal coronary angiography (p < 0.05), but could not differentiate between patients with significant and insignificant coronary artery disease. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that a coronary calcium score >5 predicted angiographic coronary artery disease with 93% sensitivity and 86% specificity (area under the curve 0.95 +/- 0.019). Multivariate analysis showed a coronary calcium score >5 to be the strongest independent predictor of angiographic coronary artery disease (odds ratio 120.7, 95% confidence interval 21.7-671.4; p < 0.001). Coronary calcium score determined by EBCT appears to have a similar predictive value in Chinese patients as it does in other ethnic populations that have been reported to date.

Abstract
Stevioside is a sweet-tasting glycoside occurring abundantly in the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana (Compositae). It has been used popularly in Japan and Brazil as a sugar substitute for decades. Previous study has shown that it lowered blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) when administered intravenously. This study shows that intraperitoneal injection of stevioside 25 mg/kg also has antihypertensive effect in SHRs. In isolated aortic rings from normal rats, stevioside could dose-dependently relax the vasopressin-induced vasoconstriction in both the presence and absence of endothelium. However, stevioside had no effect on phenylephrine- and KCl-induced phasic vasoconstriction. In addition, stevioside lost its influence on vasopressin-induced vasoconstriction in Ca(2+)-free medium. The results indicate that stevioside caused vasorelaxation via an inhibition of Ca(2+) influx into the blood vessel. This phenomenon was further confirmed in cultured aortic smooth muscle cells (A7r5). Using 10(-5) M methylene blue for 15 min, stevioside could still relax 10(-8) M vasopressin-induced vasoconstriction in isolated rat aortic rings, showing that this vasorelaxation effect was not related to nitric oxide. The present data show that the vasorelexation effect of stevioside was mediated mainly through Ca(2+) influx inhibition.

Abstract
We have recently shown that soybean-derived serine protease inhibitors and soybean extracts alter skin pigmentation, suggesting that soymilk could be used as a natural alternative to skin lightening. The present studies were initiated to examine the possible effect of STI, BBI and soymilk on hair pigmentation. Interestingly, these agents were found to affect not only hair pigmentation, but also the rate of hair growth, the dimensions of the hair follicle and hair shaft, and the appearance of the hair. The studies presented here provide first evidence, at the morphological and histological level, that soymilk and the soybean-derived serine protease inhibitors could be used as effective agents for hair care and management. These agents could reduce the rate of hair growth, decrease hair shaft dimensions and alter the pattern of melanogenic gene expression.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the relationship between the determination of dopamine level by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection (ECD) and the detection of dopamine transporter (DAT) counts using autoradiography with DAT image agent [99mTc]TRODAT-1. For striatal lesions, pretreatment of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the medial forebrain bundle shows that autoradiogaphic labeling of striatum region is reduced to near-background level. Using HPLC with ECD, unilateral 6-OHDA treatment is associated with significant (p < 0. 0002) reductions of dopamine levels. For the striatum of the 6-OHDA-lesioned side, dopamine content and DAT counts are reduced to 97% and 90%, respectively. Thus, our observation indicates a potential of using [99mTc]TRODAT-1 for the evaluation of animal DAT.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The differential diagnosis of syndrome X and coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with evidence of myocardial ischemia may be difficult. The possible difference in coronary calcium detected by electron-beam CT (EBCT) between syndrome X and CAD is rarely evaluated, especially in aged patients with chronic, stable angina. DESIGN AND SETTINGS Prospective, controlled study at a tertiary referral medical center. PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS Forty patients with syndrome X (85% male) and 53 patients with CAD (89% male) were enrolled. Ten control subjects (90% male) with negative exercise treadmill test results and normal coronary angiographic findings served as control subjects. EBCT determined the coronary calcium scores (CCSs), and standard cardiovascular risk factors of all study subjects were analyzed. RESULTS The 93 study patients had CCSs that ranged from 0 to 1,857. Coronary calcification was seen in 2 of the 10 control subjects (20%), 21 of the 40 syndrome X patients (52.5%), and 51 of the 53 CAD patients (96.2%) [p < 0.01]. The CCS (median [range]) was significantly lower in syndrome X patients than in CAD patients: 1 (0 to 117) vs 202 (0 to 1,857) [p < 0.001]. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses also demonstrated that coronary calcification differentiated syndrome X from CAD (area under curve, 0.891; 95% confidence interval, 0.806 to 0.947). Of the CAD patients whose CCSs were < 117 and overlapped with CCSs of syndrome X, multivariate analyses determined CCS > 5 (odds ratio, 13.1; 95% confidence interval, 2.86 to 59.7), hypertension (odds ratio, 6.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.5 to 27.4), and hypercholesterolemia (odds ratio, 6.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.5 to 30.5) to be independent discriminators to differentiate CAD from syndrome X. Patients with CAD had more frequent hypertension than patients with syndrome X. CONCLUSIONS The coronary calcium detected noninvasively by EBCT was different, though with some overlapping, between patients with syndrome X and CAD. In addition to standard cardiovascular risk factors, CCS determined by EBCT (especially > 117 or = 0) could differentiate between syndrome X and CAD in patients with chronic, stable angina with evidence of myocardial ischemia. Larger trials would be useful to validate CCS on EBCT as a predictor of clinical outcome in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have shown that hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. In clinical trials of lipid lowering therapy, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor has been shown to decrease cardiac events and mortality. Flavonoids are polyphenolic natural antioxidants existing in vegetables, fruits and beverages such as tea and wine. Previous studies have shown that some antioxidants had hypocholesterolemic effect, and flavonoid intake was associated with the decrease of mortality from coronary artery disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of flavonoids on HMG-CoA reductase. METHODS The methods for analysis of specific inhibitors of mevalonate biosynthesis have been well-established, using Vero cells, a cell line obtained from kidneys of African green monkeys. Flavonoids isolated from different traditional Chinese herbs were dissolved in DMSO and incubated with Vero cells with or without the addition of 1 mM mevalonate or 5 mM sodium acetate in order to observe cell growth for 24 h. RESULTS Concentrations of 1 mM mevalonate or 5 mM sodium acetate were added into culture medium in order to observe the effect on cell growth. Different concentrations of pravastatin to inhibit cell growth were used as a positive control. About 40 flavonoid compounds were used for study, only one compound, astilbin (belonging to the flavonol group), showed significant inhibition of Vero cell growth. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that one flavonoid compound, isolated from traditional medicinal herbs, may be an effective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor which might be developed into a new hypocholesterolemic agent.

Abstract
A new method of scanning thin-layer chromatography was established for the quantitative determination of the 4-chloro-3,5-dimethyl phenol by developing with 40% benzene in trichloromethane on GF254 silica gel plate. The results showed that the linear dynamic range of 4-chloro-3, 5-dimethyl phenol was 0.1858 g/L-7.4320 g/L in which the relative peak area obeyed the Lambert-Beer's law with a correlation coefficient of 0.9994 and recoveries of 98.31%-100.1%. The method is simple, rapid, sensitive and reproducible.

Abstract
Growth hormone (GH) evolution is very conservative among mammals, except for primates and ruminant artiodactyls. In fact, most known mammalian GH sequences differ from the inferred ancestral mammalian sequence by only a few amino acids. In contrast, the human GH sequence differs from the inferred ancestral sequence by 59 amino acids. However, it is not known when this rapid evolution of GH occurred during primate evolution or whether it was due to positive selection. Also, human growth hormone receptor (GHR) displays species specificity; i.e., it can interact only with human (or rhesus monkey) GH, not with nonprimate GHS: The species specificity of human GHR is largely due to the Leu-->Arg change at position 43, and it has been hypothesized that this change must have been preceded by the His-->Asp change at position 171 of GH. Is this hypothesis true? And when did these changes occur? To address the above issues, we sequenced GH and GHR genes in prosimians and simians. Our data supported the above hypothesis and revealed that the species specificity of human GHR actually emerged in the common ancestor of Old World primates, but the transitional phase still persists in New World monkeys. Our data showed that the rapid evolution of primate GH occurred during a relatively short period (in the common ancestor of higher primates) and that the rate of change was especially high at functionally important sites, suggesting positive selection. However, the nonsynonymous rate/synonymous rate ratio at these sites was <1, so relaxation of purifying selection might have played a role in the rapid evolution of the GH gene in simians, possibly as a result of multiple gene duplications. Similar to GH, GHR displayed an accelerated rate of evolution in primates. Our data revealed proportionally more amino acid replacements at the functionally important sites in both GH and GHR in simians but, surprisingly, showed few coincidental replacements of amino acids forming the same intermolecular contacts between the two proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The detection of coronary artery calcification by electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) has been suggested as an indicator of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD). There is no consensus on the correlation between coronary calcification and angiographically significant stenosis on an artery-by-artery basis. OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between coronary calcification score (CCS) and the presence of significant CAD on an artery-by-artery basis in patients with stable angina pectoris. METHODS AND RESULTS EBCT and coronary angiogram (CAG) were evaluated in 71 patients with stable angina and in nine control subjects. The CCSs of each of the four major coronary arteries were highest in patients with significant CAD (n=43), followed by patients with insignificant CAD (n=5), patients with syndrome X (n=23) and control subjects, respectively. Calcification scores of the four major coronary arteries appeared to have different predictive power for significant stenosis on the same vessel. For left main (LM) and left anterior descending (LAD) coronary arteries, CCSs of vessels with significant stenoses were not different from those without significant stenoses (values expressed as medians: LM 0 versus 1; LAD 98.5 versus 70; not significant). Calcification scores of left circumflex (LCX) and right coronary arteries (RCA) were significantly higher in vessels with significant stenosis (LCX 49.5 versus 0; RCA 53 versus 1; P<0.05). CCSs appeared to be moderately useful to predict significant stenoses in these two vessels (areas under receiver operating characteristic curves: LCX 0.68+/-0.08, 95% CI 0.52 to 0.81; RCA 0.71+/-0.08, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.84). CONCLUSIONS The CCSs of RCA and LCX arteries, but not those of LM and LAD arteries, may predict significant angiographic stenosis on an artery-by-artery basis among patients with stable angina pectoris.

Abstract
By using an animal model of parkinsonism, we examined the expression of GABA(A) receptor (R) and metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) 5 in the basal ganglia after transplantation with dopamine-rich tissue. The adult rats were unilaterally lesioned by the injection of 6-hydroxydopamine to their left medial forebrain bundles. At 5-10 weeks following the dopaminergic denervation, the levels of GABA(A)R in the left caudate-putamen and globus pallidus were about 20 and 16% lower than that of the right intact (control) sides, as shown by [3H]flunitrazepam binding autoradiography on the brain sections. However, the receptor density increased to around 132 and 130% of control levels in the entopeduncular nucleus and substantia nigra pars reticulata of the lesioned sides. Furthermore, in situ hybridization analysis exhibited parallel trends of changes in the levels of the GABA(A)R alpha1 and alpha2 subunit and mGluR5 mRNAs in the neurons of the brain regions with that of the proteins detected by the binding assay. A number of the rats 5 weeks postlesion were transplanted with the ventral mesencephalon of the embryonic rat into their left striata. Five weeks later, the changes in the [3H]flunitrazepam binding seemed to be recovered by approximately 50-63% on the grafted sides of the areas. Moreover, the transplantation appeared to produce a nearly complete reversal of the lesion-induced alterations in the levels of the mRNAs. Thus, the data indicate the mechanism of gene regulation for the modified expression of the receptors and could implicate the participation of the receptors in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
In dopaminergic neurons, free radicals are likely produced via dopamine metabolism by monoamine oxidase or via its auto-oxidation, a process facilitated by transition metals. In this study we examined the effect and possible mechanisms of apomorphine to reduce iron- and dopamine-induced 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) formation by microdialysis. We have shown that (1) FeSO(4).7H(2)O reduced both the release of dopamine and the output of dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC); (2) apomorphine may reduce FeSO(4).7H(2)O-induced increases of 2,3-DHBA formation; (3) apomorphine has substantially reduced DOPAC output in early phase and blocked dopamine-induced increase of 2,3-DHBA levels. It is concluded that apomorphine is a potent hydroxyl radical scavenger in vivo, especially for the dopamine formation.

Abstract
The conditioning and dewatering behaviors of chemical and waste activated sludges from a tannery were studied. Capillary suction time (CST), specific resistance to filtration (SRF), and bound water content were used to evaluate the sludge dewatering behaviors. Zeta potentials were also measured. Experiments were conducted on each sludge conditioned and dewatered separately, and on the sludge mixed at various ratios. Results indicate that the chemical sludge was relatively difficult to be dewatered, even in the presence of polyelectrolyte. When the waste activated sludge was mixed with the chemical sludge at ratios of 1:1 and 2:1, respectively, the dewaterability of chemical sludge improved remarkably while the relatively better dewaterability of the waste activated sludge deteriorated only to a limited extent. As the mixing ratios became 4:1 and 8:1, the dewaterability of the mixed sludge was equal to that of the waste activated sludge. The optimal polyelectrolyte dosage for the mixed sludge was equal to or less than that of the waste activated sludge. It is proposed that the chemical sludges act as skeleton builders that reduce the compressibility of the mixed sludge whose dewaterability is enhanced. Bound water contents of sludge decreased at low polyelectrolyte dosage and were not significantly affected as polyelectrolyte dosage increased. Advantages and disadvantages of co-conditioning and dewatering chemical sludge and waste activated sludge were discussed.

Abstract
The characteristics of degradation/conversion of bio-refractory and the growth of a biofilm are investigated in laboratory-scale pre-ozonation and lifted moving-bed biological activated carbon (BAC) advanced treatment processes treating phenol, benzoic acid, aminobenzoic acid and petrochemical industry wastewater which contains acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The optimal reaction time and ozone dosage of pre-ozonation for bio-refractory conversion were determined to be 30 min and 100-200 mg O3/hr, respectively. After pre-ozonation of 30 min treatment, BOD5/COD ratio of influent and effluent increased apparently from 20 to 35%, approximately. However, the change of pH in pre-ozonation was inconspicuous. The optimal flow rate of influent and air were controlled at 1.6 l/h and 120-150 nl/min in lifted moving-bed BAC advanced treatment reactor. A COD removal efficiency of 85-95% and 70-90% may be maintained by using an organic loading of 3.2-6.3 kg COD/m3 day and 0.6-1.6 kg-COD/m3 day with an HRT of 6.0 h as secondary and advanced treatment system, respectively. The time required for the BAC bed is be regenerated by a thermal regeneration is prolonged 4-5 times more than that of GAC system. It can be estimated that the enhanced COD removal capability of the biofilm was not only due to the increase in the COD removal capability of acclimated bacteria, but also due to species succession of bacteria in bio-film ecosystem.

Abstract
AIM AND METHODS To study the mechanism of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on the treatment of cerebral ischemia, and to provide theoretical basis for hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT), we examined the effect of 0.15 MPa and 0.25 MPa HBO treatment (60 min/d, for 3 successive days ) on ischemia reperfusion - induced apoptosis in gerbil hippocampus CA1 using TUNEL staining method. RESULTS The number of neuronal apoptosis in hippocampus CA1 was significantly decreased in HBOT groups(P < 0.01). Neuronal apoptosis in hippocampus CA1 in 0.25 MPa groups were less than that in 0.15 MPa groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION HBOT is effective in reducing neuronal apoptosis and in protecting neurons from injury of ischemia reperfusion, and 0.25 MPa is an appropriate pressure for HBOT.

Abstract
To study the alterations of heme oxygenase-1 mRNA in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the LPS induced disorders of myocardium function, 10 (L, 6 h), 30 (M, 6 h), 50 micrograms/ml (H, 6 h) LPS and 10 micrograms/ml LPS + 10 mumol/ml Zn-protoporphyrin-IX (ZnPPIX; L + I, 6 h) and 10 mumol/ml ZnPPIX alone (I, 6 h) were added to the medium for a 6-hour culture of NRCMs, and 10 micrograms/ml LPS for 9 h (L, 9 h) and 18 h (L, 18 h) cultures. LDH release and MDA contents of the cells were measured. When NRCMs were collected, Trypan blue stain method was used to examine the mortality (the rate of Trypan blue uptake) of NRCMs. HO-1 mRNA expression was examined by Northern blot. The results showed that HO-1 mRNA expression of NRCMs increased gradually along with the increase of LPS concentration below the level of 30 micrograms/ml. When the final concentrations of LPS were 10 and 30 micrograms/ml, the HO-1 mRNA expression of NRCMs increased by 81.2% and 126.3% respectively compared with control. When the final concentration of LPS was 50 micrograms/ml, the HO-1 mRNA expression decreased to the level of 10 micrograms/ml group. When the final concentration was 10 micrograms/ml, the HO-1 mRNA expression increased gradually along with the culture time. After a 9- or 18-hour culture, the HO-1 mRNA expression of NRCMs increased by 93.6% and 105.8% respectively compared with control. Only when NRCMs had been cultured with 30, 50 micrograms/ml LPS and 10 micrograms/ml LPS + 10 mumol/ml ZnPPIX for 6 h and 10 micrograms/ml LPS for 18 h, the rate of Trypan blue stain uptake, MDA contents and LDH release significantly increased. With 10 micrograms/ml LPS alone and 10 mumol/ml ZnPPIX alone for 6 h, the above parameters were not significantly increased (P > 0.05). The results demonstrate that LPS induces HO-1 mRNA expression of NRCMs dose- and time-dependently to some extent. The inducible HO can protect NRCMs from injury and thus play an important role in pathogenesis of myocardium under LPS.

Abstract
The radiation safety system RSS) of an accelerator facility is used to protect people from prompt radiation hazards associated with accelerator operation. The RSS is a fully interlocked, engineered system with a combination of passive and active elements that are reliable, redundant and fail-safe. The RSS consists of the access control system (ACS) and the radiation containment system (RCS). The ACS is to keep people away from the dangerous radiation inside the shielding enclosure. The RCS limits and contains the beam/radiation conditions to protect people from the prompt radiation hazards outside the shielding enclosure in both normal and abnormal operations. The complexity of an RSS depends on the accelerator and its operation. as well as associated hazard conditions. The approaches of RSS among different facilities can be different. This report gives a review of the RSS for accelerator facilities.

Abstract
The pretreatment of wastewater from a large-scale bakery was studied. In the coagulation-flocculation reaction, it was found that both alum and FeCl3 were effective in the jar tests. When at coagulant dosage of 90 to 100 mg/l, 55% of COD and 95 to 100% of SS could be removed. The optimum pH was at 6.0. In addition, the removal of SS was affected by pH more significantly, while the removal of COD was not affected in the pH range of 6.0 to 8.0. In the DAF experiments, 48.6% of COD and 69.8% of SS were removed in 10 min at a pressure of 4 kg/cm2, recycle ratio of 0.3 l/min, and pH of 6.0. Upon the addition of 100 mg/l of alum, the removal efficiency of COD did not increase while SS removal increased to 82.1%. It was found that 5-min flocculation time did improve the COD removal while it had little effect on SS removal. Flocculation for longer than 5 min did not enhance the flotation performance. Similar phenomena were observed when FeCl3 was used as the coagulant, except that flocculation had an insignificant effect on COD and SS removal. It was also found that FeCl3 was relatively more effective than alum. In summary, both coagulation-flocculation and DAF were efficient for the pretreatment. The advantages and disadvantages were discussed.

Abstract
A synchrotron radiation (SR) facility typically consists of an injector, a storage ring, and SR beamlines. The latter two features are unique to SR facilities, when compared to other types of accelerator facilities. The SR facilities have the characteristics of low injection beam power, but high stored beam power. The storage ring is generally above ground with people occupying the experimental floor around a normally thin concrete ring wall. This paper addresses the radiation issues, in particular the shielding design, associated with the storage ring and SR beamlines. Normal and abnormal beam losses for injection and stored beams, as well as typical storage ring operation, are described. Ring shielding design for photons and neutrons from beam losses in the ring is discussed. Radiation safety issues and shielding design for SR beamlines, considering gas bremsstrahlung and synchrotron radiation, are reviewed. Radiation source terms and the methodologies for shielding calculations are presented.

Abstract
An overview is presented of radiation protection at high energy electron accelerator facilities. By 'high energy' is meant the energy domain beyond a few tens of MeV, where electromagnetic showers are the determining and dominant factor for beam interactions with matter. The basic components of electron accelerators are described and their potential impact on radiation safety. The paper then concentrates on sources of prompt radiation which distinguish these machines from other accelerator facilities and briefly describe other features such as shielding or safety systems as relevant to electron machines. A more comprehensive description of these aspects can be found elsewhere in these proceedings. In addition, general concepts presented in this review are complemented and illustrated by specific examples in the authors' synchrotron radiation work in these proceedings.

Abstract
Effect of ozonation on characteristics of waste activated sludge was investigated in the current study. Concentrations of cell-bound extracellular polymers (washed ECPs) did not change much upon ozonation, whereas the sum of cell-bound and soluble extracellular polymers (unwashed ECPs) increased with increasing ozone dose. Washed ECPs in original sludge as divided by molecular weight distribution was 39% < 1,000 Da (low MW), 30% from 1,000 to 10,000 Da (medium MW), and 31% > 10,000 Da (high MW). It was observed that the low-MW fraction decreased, and the high-MW fraction increased in ozonized sludge. The unwashed ECPs were characterized as 44% in low MW, 30% in medium MW, and 26% in high MW. Both low-MW and medium-MW fractions of unwashed ECPs decreased while high-MW fraction increased in ozonized sludge. The dewaterability of ozonized sludge, assessed by capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF), deteriorated with ozone dose. The optimal dose of cationic polyelectrolyte increased with increasing ozone dose. The production rate and the accumulated amount of methane gas of ozonized sludge were also higher.

Abstract
AIM To study the mechanisms of how hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) reduced neuronal apoptosis following forebrain ischemia reperfusion. METHODS Changes of the expression of protein Bcl-2 or Bax were observed in CA1 region of gerbil hippocampus following HBOT on ischemia reperfusion 3 days using the method of labelled streptavidin biotin (LSAB) immunohistochemistry staining. For this purpose gerbils were exposed to the 0.15 MPa and 0.25 MPa HBO 60 min every day for 3 successive days. RESULTS The expression of protein Bcl-2 in hippocampus CA1 was significantly increased in HBOT groups (P < 0.01), and changes in 0.25 MPa groups were greater than those in 0.15 MPa groups (P < 0.01). The expression of protein Bax in hippocampus CA1 was not changed significantly in HBOT groups. CONCLUSION HBO can induce the expression of Bcl-2, which is the mechanism of neuronal protecting effect of HBOT.

Abstract
The dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) and nucleus ambiguus (NA) were both traced with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde labelling technique after vagal-hypoglossal nerve anastomosis (VHA). By light microscopy, reinnervation of the new target, viz. tongue skeletal musculature, by DMV and NA was established at 22 days postoperation (dpo) as shown by the neuronal labelling with HRP. Ultrastructurally, signs of retrograde degeneration occurred in some DMV and NA neurons between 3 and 25 days after VHA. The incidence of darkened dendrites, an early sign of dendritic loss, was more common in the DMV compared to the NA. Accompanying the neuronal alteration were drastic astrocytic reactions in the DMV, but not in the NA. Between 3 and 7 dpo, the astrocytes in the DMV showed extensively hypertrophied processes and by 22 dpo, the somata and dendrites of HRP-labelled DMV neurons, but not NA's, appeared to be delineated by the increased lamellar astrocytic processes. Such a feature was sustained throughout the remaining postoperative intervals up to 500 dpo. It is concluded that the DMV motoneurons being autonomic in nature are probably not conducive to the newly acquired target organ. Hence, the insulation of the regenerating DMV motoneurons by the astroglial ensheathment would be vital in the neuronal remodelling and reconstruction of the vagal-hypoglossal pathway.

Abstract
Objective. To observe the changes of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in cerebral and hepatic cytosol during decompression stress injury in rats. Method. 30 rats were divided into 5 group. They were placed into the compression chamber for compression and decompression. The binding capacity of GR of cerebral and hepatic cytosol were measured by the exchange assay, using 3H dexamethasone as the ligand. Meanwhile, decompression bubbles on pericardial area were measured using Doppler ultrasonic method. Result. The binding capacity of GR of cerebral and hepatic cytosol reduced after decompression stress injury in the animals, especially cerebral cytosol (P<0.01, P<0.05). The result also showed that the binding capacity of cerebral and hepatic GR should have further decreased, if the therapeutic measure had not been used in animals suffered from decompression sickness (DCS). Conclusion. The changes of the binding capacity of GR of cerebral and hepatic cytosol were proved to be related to decompression stress injury, which might be taken as one of the indices for evaluating injury degree of DCS.

Abstract
AIMS Stevioside is a natural plant glycoside isolated from the plant Stevia rebaudiana which has been commercialized as a sweetener in Japan for more than 20 years. Previous animal studies have shown that stevioside has an antihypertensive effect. This study was to designed to evaluate the effect of stevioside in human hypertension. METHODS A multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was undertaken. This study group consisted of 106 Chinese hypertensive subjects with diastolic blood pressure between 95 and 110 mmHg and ages ranging from 28 to 75 years with 60 subjects (men 34, women 26; mean +/- s.d., 54.1+/-3.8 years) allocated to active treatment and 46 (men 19, women 27; mean +/- s.d., 53.7+/-4.1 years) to placebo treatment. Each subject was given capsules containing stevioside (250 mg) or placebo thrice daily and followed-up at monthly intervals for 1 year. RESULTS After 3 months, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the stevioside group decreased significantly (systolic: 166.0+/-9.4-152.6+/-6.8 mmHg; diastolic: 104.7 +/- 5.2-90.3+/-3.6 mmHg, P<0.05), and the effect persisted during the whole year. Blood biochemistry parameters including lipid and glucose showed no significant changes. No significant adverse effect was observed and quality of life assessment showed no deterioration. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that oral stevioside is a well tolerated and effective modality that may be considered as an alternative or supplementary therapy for patients with hypertension.
