Abstract
7710 Background: This trial was aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ip BLM instillation as compared to pericardial drainage alone in pts with MPE. Methods: Pts ≤ 75 y.o. with pathologically documented lung cancer, who had received pericardial drainage for clinical MPE within 72 hours of the enrollment, were eligible. Pts with chemo-naïve small cell cancer, major organ failure, or severe co-morbidity were excluded. Signed consent form was obtained. Pts were randomized to either Arm A: observation alone after drainage, or Arm B: ip BLM of 15mg, followed by additional ip BLM 10mg q48hours. Drainage tube was removed when daily drainage was ≤20mL; the protocol therapy was judged as primary failure, with no regulations on post-therapy, if this criteria could not be met after 7 days from enrollment. MPE was followed at 1,2,4,6 and 12 months by echocardiography. The primary endpoint was survival with MPE control (effusion failure-free survival, EFFS) at 2 months, assumed to be 60% vs. 30%. The trial was designed to provide 80% power with 5% one-sided alpha, with 80 cases. Results: From Aug./99 to Jan./06, 80 pts were enrolled, with 79 eligible. M:F=51:29, median age 60 y.o. (range: 39–75), 75 nonsmall histology, 53 with prior chemotherapy, and 20 with prior radiotherapy. Median drainage volume was 600 mL (range: 130–1930). Cytology of the effusion was positive in 58/76 examined. EFFS ( table ) tended to favor Arm B, with hazard ratio of 0.64 (one-sided p=0.030 by logrank test, 95% C.I. 0.40–1.03). No additional acute toxicities or complications were observed for Arm B. There were 2 cases with late constrictive complications in Arm B, but none was severe. The median survival was 79 days (A) and 119 days (B) (not significant). Conclusions: Although the difference of EFFS at 2 months was not statistically significant, BLM ip after pericardial drainage appears to be safe and effective in allover for management of MPE. No significant financial relationships to disclose. [Table: see text]

Abstract
The ordering of protons has been observed at a new storage ring, S-LSR, at Kyoto University. Abrupt jumps in the momentum spread and the Schottky noise power were observed for protons for the first time at a particle number of approximately 2000, upon applying electron cooling with electron currents of 25, 50, and 100 mA. The transition temperature was 0.17 and 1 meV in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively. The transverse temperature of the proton beam was much below that of electrons at the transition, which played an essential role in the ordering of protons.

Abstract
Leukocyte adhesion to the vascular wall is a critical early step in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases and is mediated in part by the leukocyte integrin, VLA-4, which binds to endothelial vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) -1. Here, we investigate VLA-4's role in endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). At various time points (6-48 h) after EIU induction, the severity of the inflammation was evaluated by quantifying cell and protein content in the aqueous fluid, firm leukocyte adhesion in the retinal vessels, and the number of extravasated leukocytes into the vitreous. Functional activation of VLA-4 in vivo was investigated in our previously introduced autoperfused micro flow chamber assay. Firm adhesion of EIU leukocytes to immobilized VCAM-1 under physiological blood flow conditions was significantly increased compared with normal controls (P<0.05), suggesting an important role for VLA-4 in EIU. VLA-4 blockade in vivo significantly suppressed all uveitis-related inflammatory parameters studied, decreasing the clinical score by 45% (P<0.01), protein content in the aqueous fluid by 21% (P<0.01), retinal leukostasis by 68% (P<0.01), and leukocyte accumulation in the vitreous by 75% (P<0.01). Our data provide novel evidence for functional up-regulation of VLA-4 during EIU and suggest VLA-4 blockade as a promising therapeutic strategy for treatment of acute inflammatory eye diseases.

Abstract
Bovine lactoferrin was administered orally, in feed, to six bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) before they were transported for approximately six hours; their stress responses were compared with those of five untreated dolphins. During the journey the dolphins had an increased plasma concentration of cortisol, and lymphopenia, eosinopenia and mild neutrophilia, indicating a stress response. The administration of lactoferrin did not affect the function of the dolphins' polymorphonuclear leucocytes, but affected their leucogram by maintaining the number of circulating eosinophils.

Abstract
The Nagoya breed native to Japan is popular as a dual-purpose breed for eggs and meat. The current study describes a method to discriminate between the Nagoya breed and other breeds and commercial stocks of chicken. Four strains of the Nagoya breed established at the Aichi-ken Agricultural Research Center were analyzed using 25 microsatellite markers. In these strains, 5 of the markers (ABR0015, ABR0257, ABR0417, ABR0495, and ADL0262) had a single allele. Other chicken samples (448) of various breeds and hybrids were analyzed using the same 5 markers. None of these chicken samples had the same allele combination as the Nagoya breed strains. These 5 microsatellite markers provide a practical method to accurately discriminate the Nagoya breed from other chicken breeds.

Abstract
Most of the patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are sporadic. However, Since identification of monogenic forms of PD, the contribution of genetic factors to the pathogenesis of sporadic PD is proposed as one of major risk factors. Indeed, this is supported by the demonstration of the high concordance in twins, increased risk among relatives of PD patients in case control and family studies. Thus, the functional analysis for the gene products for familial PD provides us a good hint to elucidate the pathogenesis of nigral degeneration. For example, although alpha-synuclein is involved in a rare dominant form of familial PD with dopa responsive parkinsonian features, this molecule is a major component of and Lewy bodies (LBs). In contrast, Park2 (parkin-related disease) is the most frequent form among patients with young-onset PD. However, Park2 brains generally lack the formation of LBs. In the other word, parkin responsible for Park2 is essential for the formation of LBs. Thus, both alpha-synuclein and parkin are speculated to share a common pathway. Here, we reviewed the parkin function and molecular mechanisms of Park2.

Abstract
15029 Background: The Japanese Society of Gynecologic Oncology started a training program for the subspecialty of board certified gynecologic oncologists in 2005. This study aimed to assess the attitude of Japanese gynecologists for the treatment of ovarian cancer in pre-gynecologic oncologist era. Methods: The JGOG distributed a survey to 217 member institutions in January 2005. The principal investigator (PI) of each institution answered 33 questionnaires regarding diagnostic, surgical and chemotherapy issues. The survey was returned from 156 institutions (71.9%). Results: Hospital settings were general (44%), academic (44%), Cancer Center (8%), or private (4%). Only two of PIs were medical oncologists and rests of them were gynecologists. As the staging procedure in early ovarian cancer, 67% institutions do systemic pelvic lymphadenectomy (LNX) but 22% do only sampling. For the paraaortic nodes, 36% do systemic LNX and 10% do sampling below renal vein, and 14% do LNX and 12% do sampling below inferior mesenteric artery. However, intraabdominal explorations such as multiple peritoneal biopsies have been done only less than 30% except for omentectomy (90%). With regard to the surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, 57% institutions do not do any intestinal resection and anastomosis during the primary surgery. Among them 7% of institutions prefer neoadjuvant chemotherapy (no debulking at all) for advanced ovarian cancer. However, 84% of the institutions do interval debulking and 57% of them are quite aggressive for the procedure. These results demonstrate the high expectation that chemotherapy may reduce the aggressiveness of surgery for advanced ovarian cancer. In terms of chemotherapy for the high-risk early and advanced ovarian cancer, taxane plus platinum is the most used regimen (93–95%). However, 45% of institutions prefer different regimen for clear cell carcinoma. CPT-11 is the most used (88.6%). Intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been performed in 28.2% of institutions. 37.2% of institutions do consolidation chemotherapy. Conclusions: This is an important base-line information to assess the pattern of care for ovarian cancer patients in the era before gynecologic oncologist subspecialty is applicable in Japan. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
7080 Background: Thymoma is considered to be sensitive to Cx. Dose intensive Cx might well be suitable for such tumors, especially in combination with local therapy. Objectives of the trials were to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the dose intensive CODE (cisplatin[C]- vincristine[O]- doxorubicin[D]- etoposide[E]) Cx in thymoma. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival time (PFS). Methods: Patients (pts) with 15–70 years of age with histologically documented Cx-naïve thymoma with stage IVa/IVb disease (JCOG 9605) or unresectable stage III disease (JCOG 9606) were eligible. Tumors of other histology, such as thymic carcinoma, carcinoid or lymphoma were excluded; pts were to have ample organ function and ECOG PS of 0–2. Myasthenia was allowed. Signed consent form was obtained. Pts received CODE Cx of 9 weeks (w): C 25 mg/m2 Cx day 1 on each w1–9; O 1mg/m2 d1 on w1,2,4,6,8; D 40 mg/m2 d1 and E 80 mg/m2 d1,2,3 on w 1,3,5,7,9. Cx courses were supported by GCSF. Steroids were used only for antiemesis. Those with stage III disease (JCOG 9606) went on to surgery, if judged to be resectable, and post-operative radiotherapy (RT) of 48Gy; those with unresectable disease received 60Gy RT. Results: From Jul./97 to Apr./05, 53 pts were entered to the studies. Five were found ineligible because of different histology. Pt characteristics and response to the Cx were summarized in the table . Toxicity of the Cx was mainly hematologic and generally well tolerated, with no toxic death; 70% of the pts completed planned 9 weeks. Thirteen pts in JCOG 9606 (stage III) received thoracotomy; tumor was resected in 11 pts, completely in 9 (39% of enrolled pts). Pathologic CR was observed in 3. The median PFS was 9.5m for stage IV and 4.5 y for stage III diseases. Overall survival at 2 & 5 yrs were 82% & 57% for stage IV and 96% & 77% for stage III pts. Conclusions: Short-course, dose intensive Cx was active against thymoma. Although it does not seem to bring long PFS in stage IV pts, it could improve resectability in limited disease. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether docetaxel has antitumour activity in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial carcinoma. Chemotherapy-naïve or previously treated patients (one regimen) with histopathologically documented endometrial carcinoma and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ⩽2 entered the study. Docetaxel 70 mg m−2 was administered intravenously on day 1 of a 3-week cycle up to a maximum of six cycles. If patients responded well to docetaxel, additional cycles were administered until progressive disease or unacceptable toxicity occurred. Of 33 patients with a median age of 59 years (range, 39–74 years) who entered the study, 14 patients (42%) had received one prior chemotherapy regimen. In all, 32 patients were evaluable for efficacy, yielding an overall response rate of 31% (95% confidence interval, 16.1–50.0%); complete response and partial response (PR) were 3 and 28%, respectively. Of 13 pretreated patients, three (23%) had a PR. The median duration of response was 1.8 months. The median time to progression was 3.9 months. The predominant toxicity was grade 3–4 neutropenia, occurring in 94% of the patients, although febrile neutropenia arose in 9% of the patients. Oedema was mild and infrequent. Docetaxel has antitumour activity in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial carcinoma, including those previously treated with chemotherapy; however, the effect was transient and accompanied by pronounced neutropenia in most patients.

Abstract
AIM/HYPOTHESIS Resistin, the expression of which is suppressed by thiazolidinedione treatment in adipocytes, is one of the key molecules for the tight link between adiposity and insulin resistance. Here, we show the in vivo effects of resistin on insulin sensitivity in mature mice using a cell implantation method. METHODS Resistin cDNA was transfected into 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes, which were then implanted into subcutaneous areas of nude mice. Metabolic analyses were performed 4 or 6 weeks after implantation. RESULTS The mice implanted with 3T3-L1 cells overexpressing resistin (R-mice) showed significantly (p<0.05) increased plasma resistin levels. After a glucose load plasma insulin levels were significantly greater in R-mice than in mice implanted with mock-transfected cells (M-mice). The AUC of insulin after glucose loading was positively correlated with circulating resistin levels. Significantly decreased glucose responses after insulin injection were observed in R-mice, compared to M-mice. The insulin-induced phosphorylation level of IRS-1 was significantly lower in muscles of R-mice than M-mice. The expression of TNF-alpha mRNA in intra-peritoneal fat tissues was significantly greater in R-mice than in M-mice, but there was no difference between the two groups with regard to subcutaneous fat tissues. The concentration of TNF-alpha in plasma was positively correlated with resistin levels in R-mice. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Resistin, when actually secreted from cells in mature mice, causes disturbed glucose metabolism, possibly based on decreased insulin sensitivity in muscle. The in vivo effects of resistin on insulin sensitivity might be in part mediated by increased TNF-alpha expression in visceral fat tissues.

Abstract
Electron-DNA anion collisions were studied using an electrostatic storage ring with a merging electron-beam technique. The rate of neutral particles emitted in collisions started to increase from definite threshold energies, which increased regularly with ion charges in steps of about 10 eV. These threshold energies were almost independent of the length and sequence of DNA, but depended strongly on the ion charges. Neutral particles came from breaks of DNAs, rather than electron detachment. The step of the threshold energy increase approximately agreed with the plasmon excitation energy. It is deduced that plasmon excitation is closely related to the reaction mechanism.
