Abstract
The sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient of EPDM (Ethylene-propylene Diene Monomer) composites incorporated with Silicon Carbide particles (SiCp's) of various volume fractions (0-40%) were experimentally and theoretically investigated. For the experiment a through-transmission technique was used. For the theoretical prediction, some mechanical property models such as Reuss model and Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) model etc. were employed. The experimental results showed that the sound velocity decreased with the increase of the SiCp volume fraction up to 30% and then increased with the 40 vol% specimen. The attenuation coefficient was increased with the increasing SiCp volume fractions. The modified Reuss model with a longitudinal elastic modulus predicted most well the experimental sound velocity and elastic modulus results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Neuromuscular blocking effects according to the severity of liver dysfunction have not been evaluated. We assessed the neuromuscular effects of mivacurium in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-treated rabbits with toxic hepatitis in vivo. METHODS We compared the dose-response relationships and the neuromuscular blocking effects of mivacurium in 66 rabbits randomly treated with 0.3 mL kg(-1) of corn oil, 0.3 mL kg(-1) of CCl4 or 0.6 mL kg(-1) of CCl4 for 11 weeks, respectively. Train-of-four stimuli were applied every 10 s to the common peroneal nerve and the force of contraction of the tibialis anterior muscle was measured. RESULTS Severe hepatitis was associated with a rightward shift of the mivacurium dose-response curves, but mild hepatitis had no effect. The calculated ED50 values for the control, mild and severe hepatitis were 17.1+/-2.6, 18.2+/-2.7 and 31.8+/-3.2 microg kg(-1), respectively. Rabbits with severe hepatitis had a significantly prolonged recovery time from neuromuscular blockade compared with other rabbits. Cholinesterase activity had a negative correlation with recovery indices of mivacurium even in severe hepatic injury. Severe hepatitis induced a prolongation of action duration of repeated doses, but maintained the constant intervals. CONCLUSIONS The dose-response and the time course of neuromuscular blockade of mivacurium differ in mild hepatitis compared with severe hepatitis, but required no adjustments of different doses for repeated injection after the desired depth of neuromuscular block, and had a negative correlation with the activity of plasma cholinesterase in both hepatic injuries.

Abstract
Escherichia coli containing the K1 capsule is the leading cause of gram-negative meningitis, but the pathogenesis of this disease is not completely understood. Recent microarray experiments in which we compared the gene expression profile of E. coli K1 associated with human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) to the gene expression profile of E. coli K1 not associated with HBMEC revealed that there was a threefold increase in the expression of the fliI gene, encoding an ATP synthase involved in flagellar synthesis and motility, in HBMEC-associated E. coli. In this study, we examined the role of flagella in E. coli K1 association with and invasion of HBMEC by constructing isogenic DeltaflhDC, DeltafliI, DeltafliC, and DeltacheW mutants that represented each class of flagellar genes. Mutations that affected the flagellum structure and flagellum formation (DeltaflhDC, DeltafliI, and DeltafliC) resulted in significant defects in motility, as well as in HBMEC association and invasion, compared to the characteristics of the wild-type strain when preparations were examined with or without centrifugation. Transcomplementation with the corresponding genes restored the levels of these mutants to the levels of the parent strain. These findings suggest that the HBMEC association and invasion defects of the mutants are most likely related to flagella and less likely due to their motility defects. This conclusion was supported by our demonstration that the cheW mutant was not motile but was able to associate with and invade HBMEC. In addition, purified recombinant flagellin reduced the association of the wild-type strain with HBMEC by approximately 40%, while it had no effect on the fliC mutant's association with HBMEC. Together, these findings indicate that flagella promote E. coli K1 binding to HBMEC.

Abstract
A series of bifunctional compounds with galactosyl residues as targeting ligand for asialoglycoprotein receptors on hepatocytes and various dendrimers as the DNA-binding domain was synthesized. When mixed with plasmid DNA, these compounds self assembled into particles that exhibited high transfection activity both in vitro and in vivo. Optimal activity in liver cells was observed with compounds containing three galactosyl residues and 16 dendrimer arms. These results suggest that domain-based design is an effective strategy for development of a new generation of synthetic gene carriers.

Abstract
In a membrane bioreactor (MBR) process containing a variety of bacteria, the bacterial adhesion to the membrane surface, prior to cake formation, causes an increased filtration resistance. In this study, Pseudomonas fluorescens, commonly found in the municipal wastewater treatment process with activated sludge, was used to show the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on bacterial adhesion to the membrane surface in the MBR. Of the various roles of EPS in promoting membrane fouling, the adhesion of bacteria to the membrane surface was calculated using the specific cake resistance (alpha, m/kg). Although the amount of EPS binding with bacteria was increased by the addition of Ca2+, there was no significant effect on the bacterial growth. The results of the particle size distribution showed that the addition of Ca2+ increased flocculation, allowing the formation of a complex with the bacteria and EPS. In order to identify the effects of the addition of Ca2+ on the hydrophobicity, the contact angle was also measured. The result showed that the addition of Ca2+ showed no significant differences in the hydrophobicity, even though there was an increase in flocculation. With the bacteria containing a higher EPS concentration, a higher specific cake resistance was observed. From the results of the adhesion experiment, which was conducted with various EPS levels, displayed as the COD and TOC concentration, an increased EPS concentration was shown to promote bacterial adhesion to the membrane surface.

Abstract
In this study, manganese-coated sand (MCS) and iron-coated sand (ICS) were applied in the oxidation of As(III) and adsorption of As(V), respectively. ICS and MCS were prepared by mixing FeCl3 and Mn(NO3)2, respectively, with Joomoonjin sand at 150 degrees C. In the batch adsorption isotherms, adsorption of As(III) and As(V) onto ICS followed a Langmuir type. ICS showed a greater capacity in the removal of As(V) than As(III) and also in the removal of As(V) compared with MCS. Three different configurations of ICS and MCS were used to investigate the oxidation of As(III) and adsorption of As(V) in a column. In the homogenised system, arsenic breakthrough was approximately two-times delayed compared with the separately packed systems. After breakthrough of arsenic, concentration of As(III) in the effluents was below 40 ppb for the entire reaction period in all configurations, and most arsenic was identified as As(V) owing to near complete conversion of As(III) to As(V) by MCS. The catalytic activity of MCS on the oxidation of As(III) was maintained up to 700 pore volumes, which corresponds to the treatment of at least 300 mg As(III) based on the 1 kg MCS. Compared with the homogenised column, the released Mn(II) concentration from two-staged and four-staged columns was great for the entire reaction period. In the case where the same amount of ICS and MCS was packed in a filtration system, the homogenised column was identified as a better configuration compared with the two-staged and four-staged columns when considering the arsenic breakthrough time as well as the released concentration of Fe(III) and Mn(II).

Abstract
A long-time fluctuation correlation function with a power-law form has been observed in recent single-molecule experiments by the Xie group. By analyzing the dynamics of an elastic network model (ENM) under white noise, we show that the observed long-time memory kernel can be explained by the discrepancy between the experimentally measured coordinate (or the coordinate directly coupled to protein function) and the minimum energy path of the system. Consequently, the dynamics of the measured collective coordinate has contributions from degrees of freedoms with a broad distribution of time scales. Our study also implies that the widely used ENM Hamiltonian should be viewed as a coarse-grained model of a protein over a rugged energy landscape. Large effective drag coefficients are needed to describe protein dynamics with the ENM's.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between serum minerals and body mass index in adult women. METHODS One hundred and eighteen adult women were recruited by written advertisement from outpatient clinics or a health promotion center at a university hospital. Serum calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc were measured by an automatic analytical instrument and body mass index was calculated from height and weight. RESULTS Serum magnesium was inversely associated with body mass index (beta=-0.283, P=0.001) whereas serum copper had a positive association with body mass index (beta=0.197, P=0.025) after adjusting for age, physical activity, energy intake, dietary fat, alcohol consumption, supplements and menopause status. No associations were found with serum calcium and zinc. CONCLUSION Serum magnesium and copper may be involved in the regulation of body size in adult women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of alpha (s1)-casein hydrolysate on females with stress-related symptoms. DESIGN Double-blind, randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled trial. SETTING The alpha (s1)-casein hydrolysate was manufactured by INGREDIA (Arras, France) and the placebo was manufactured by DIETAROMA (Bourg, France). Study was designed and performed at PROCLAIM (Rennes, France), and the statistical analyses were performed by D Desor (Nancy, France). SUBJECTS A total of 63 female volunteers suffering from at least one disorder that may be related to stress such as anxiety, sleep problems and general fatigue. INTERVENTIONS A total of 63 volunteers participated in a double-blind, randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled study. Subjects were randomly allocated to receive either tablets containing alpha (s1)-casein hydrolysate or placebo at the dose of 150 mg/day for 30 days. After a 3 weeks washout period, they were crossed over for a new 30-day period of tablets intake. The outcome measure was a questionnaire including 44 items of symptoms that may be related stress in which the severity of each sign was evaluated using a 10-degree scale. These measures were studied repeatedly at the day of 0, 15 and 30 after the start of each interventional period. RESULTS The 30-day treatment by alpha (s1)-casein hydrolysate in females with stress-related symptoms reduced their symptoms, particularly in digestion (P<0.01), cardiovascular (P<0.05), intellectual (P<0.01), emotional (P<0.05) and social problems (P<0.05). CONCLUSION This study showed that a 30-day ingestion of alpha (s1)-casein hydrolysate decreased the stress-related symptoms in females suggesting that this product may be used as an effective functional ingredient alleviating such symptoms. Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a highly metastatic disease. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) levels are elevated in ascites from ovarian cancer patients, but its potential role in ovarian cancer metastasis has just begun to be revealed. In this work, we show that LPA stimulates invasion of primary ovarian cancer cells, but not ovarian epithelial or borderline ovarian tumor cells, although these benign cells indeed respond to LPA in cell migration. We have found that LPA downregulates tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). TIMP2 and TIMP3 play functional role in LPA-induced invasion as negative regulators. G(i) protein, phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), cytosolic phospholipase A(2) and urokinase type plasminogen activator (uPA) are required for LPA-induced cells invasion. TIMP3 may affect two independent downstream targets, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor and p38 MAPK. In vivo, LPA stimulates tumor metastasis in an orthotopic ovarian tumor model, which can be inhibited by a PI3K inhibitor, LY294002. In summary, LPA is likely a key component for promoting ovarian metastasis in vivo. LPA downregulates TIMP3, which may have targets other than metalloproteinases. Our in vivo metastasis mouse model is useful for studying the efficacy of therapeutic regimes of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse the combined effect of melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) and high mobility group AT-hook 1 (HMGA1) polymorphisms on growth and fatness traits in Duroc pigs. No significant interaction was observed between MC4R and HMGA1 for back-fat traits. An additive mode of inheritance of both gene effects was found for average daily gain and lean meat content. Maximum mean differences from combined genotypic effects were over 2 mm for back fat, 70 g/day for average daily gain and 2% for lean meat content. Therefore, utilization of polymorphisms in both MC4R and HMGA1 for marker-assisted selection could result in an economic benefit to the pig industry.

Abstract
This paper describes the preliminary biological results that novel T-type calcium channel blockers inhibit the growth of human cancer cells by blocking calcium influx into the cell, based on unknown mechanism on the cell cycle responsible for cellular proliferation. Among the selected compounds from compound library, compound 9c (KYS05041) was identified to be nearly equipotent with Cisplatin against some human cancers in the micromolar range.

Abstract
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of corn, Zea mays L., in North America that has recently invaded Europe. A loss of ovipositional fidelity to cornfields has allowed the species to circumvent crop rotation as a means of control in part of its range in the United States. Analyses of variation at eight microsatellite loci provided no evidence for general genetic differentiation between samples of western corn rootworm collected in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., fields and those collected in cornfields both inside and outside the rotation-resistance problem area. This result suggests that few or no barriers to gene flow exist between rotation-resistant and -susceptible rootworm populations. The implications of this result for the management of western corn rootworm in North America and Europe are discussed.

Abstract
Empirical models based on classification and regression tree analysis (CART model) or fuzzy logic (FL model) were used to forecast leaf wetness duration (LWD) 24 h into the future, using site-specific weather data estimates as inputs. Forecasted LWD and air temperature then were used as inputs to simulate performance of the Melcast and TOM-CAST disease-warning systems. Overall, the CART and FL models underpredicted LWD with a mean error (ME) of 2.3 and 3.9 h day-1, respectively. The CFL model, a corrected version of the FL model using a weight value, reduced ME in LWD forecasts to -1.1 h day-1. In the Melcast and TOM-CAST simulations, the CART and CFL models predicted timing of occurrence of action thresholds similarly to thresholds derived from on-site weather data measurements. Both models forecasted the exact spray dates for approximately 45% of advisories derived from measurements. When hindcast and forecast estimates derived from site-specific estimates provided by SkyBit Inc. were used as inputs, the CART and CFL models forecasted spray advisories within 3 days for approximately 70% of simulation periods for the Melcast and TOM-CAST disease-warning systems. The results demonstrate that these models substantially enhance the accuracy of commercial site-specific LWD estimates and, therefore, can enhance performance of disease-warning systems using LWD as an input.

Abstract
In vivo expression of angiostatin and endostatin, two different types of endothelial cell growth inhibitor, have been reported to inhibit vascularization in tumor tissues, resulting in tumor growth inhibition. Recently, in vivo expression of saxatilin, a novel disintegrin purified from snake (Gloydius saxatilis) venom, was able to strongly inhibit endothelial cell proliferation and smooth muscle cell migration, resulting in tumor growth inhibition. However, the antitumor efficacy of the individual antiangiogenic molecules expressed in vivo was not sufficiently potent to induce tumor regression in animal models. Therefore, in this study, we have systemically examined how combinational transfer of angiostatin, endostatin, and saxatilin genes affects neovascularization in tumor tissues and tumor progression in a mouse model. In Matrigel-implanted mice, cotransfection with plasmids encoding angiostatin K1-3 (pFLAG-Angio K1/3), endostatin (pFLAG-Endo), and saxatilin (pFLAG-Sax) resulted in the most effective inhibition of angiogenesis. In addition, hydrodynamic cotransfection of the three genes induced more inhibition of B16BL6 melanoma growth and pulmonary metastasis than other combinations of transfected genes. Compared with the empty vector-treated control group, cotreatment with the three plasmids reduced B16BL6 tumor growth by 89% and pulmonary metastasis by 90%. These results provide additional evidence supporting the combined systemic expression of antiangiogenic factors, such as angiostatin K1-3, endostatin, and saxatilin, as an alternative procedure for antiangiogenic cancer therapy.

Abstract
Prenatal ultrasonography early in gestation allows diagnosis of posterior urethral valves. We report on a fetus with posterior urethral valves treated using vesicoamniotic shunting at 13 + 5 weeks' gestation. A double-basket catheter was used for shunting. A 2582-g male neonate was delivered at 33 weeks' gestation, and the infant continued to show normal renal function at 3 years of age. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of successful vesicoamniotic shunt placement using a double-basket catheter in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Few biologically based models to assess the risk of soybean rust have been developed because of difficulty in estimating variables related to infection rate of the disease. A fuzzy logic system, however, can estimate apparent infection rate by combining meteorological variables and biological criteria pertinent to soybean rust severity. In this study, a fuzzy logic apparent infection rate (FLAIR) model was developed to simulate severity of soybean rust and validated using data from field experiments on two soybean cultivars, TK 5 and G 8587. The FLAIR model estimated daily apparent infection rate of soybean rust and simulated disease severity based on population dynamics. In weekly simulation, the FLAIR model explained >85% of variation in disease severity. In simulation of an entire epidemic period, the FLAIR model was able to predict disease severity accurately once initial values of disease severity were predicted accurately. Our results suggest that a model could be developed to determine apparent infection rate and an initial value of disease severity in advance using forecasted weather data, which would provide accurate prediction of severity of soybean rust before the start of a season.

Abstract
We reviewed 15 patients with femoral non-union after interlocking intramedullary nailing treated with plate augmentation and bone grafting with the nail in situ. The mean time from primary nailing to plate augmentation and bone grafting was 10 months. At the time of presentation, the patients had undergone an average of 1.6 operations from the time of their original injury. To achieve stability of the fracture, we applied an AO plate on the lateral aspect of the femur. The retained nail maintained alignment of the fracture, and plating did not require an extensive surgical approach. In all patients, there was visible motion at the fracture site; however, the motion disappeared after plate augmentation. All patients achieved radiological solid union at an average of 7.2 months.

Abstract
ADRP plays an important role in regulating lipid storage in various cells. We investigated the ADRP gene as a candidate gene for intramuscular fat deposition and marbling traits in pigs. A full-length transcript of porcine ADRP was cloned by RT-PCR and RACE. The porcine ADRP cDNA (1848 bp) contains a 1377-bp open reading frame, encoding a deduced protein of 459 amino acids, which has amino acid sequence identities of 89, 89, 82 and 81% with cattle, human, mouse and rat ADRP genes respectively. The genomic structure and sequence of the porcine ADRP were also analysed using a BAC clone of a Korean native pig. Pig ADRP comprises eight exons spanning approximately 13 kb and is located on chromosome 1 q2.3-q2.7 between microsatellite markers SW2185 and SW974. Several sequence variations were detected from nine different pig breeds. The biological role of this gene and the mapping localization indicated that the porcine ADRP is a possible candidate gene for fat deposition and marbling traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7 [Prevnar]) on penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP) recovered from children with acute otitis media (AOM) is unclear. METHODS At 5 hospitals, 505 pneumococcal isolates were collected from children with AOM between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2002. Molecular subtyping was performed on 158 isolates. RESULTS Overall, the percentage of AOM cases due to non-PCV7 serogroups (including serotype 3) increased over time (from 12% in 1999 to 32% in 2002; P < .01) and according to the number of PCV7 doses received (18% [< or = 1 dose] vs. 35% [2-4 doses]; P < .01). The percentage of cases due to vaccine-related serotypes (including serotype 19A) increased according to the number of PCV7 doses received (10% [< or = 1 dose] vs. 19% [2-4 doses]; P = .05) but not over time, whereas the percentage of cases due to serotype 19F remained unchanged both over time and according to the number of PCV7 doses received. The frequency of penicillin nonsusceptibility among PCV7 serotypes (range, 65%-75%) and non-PCV7 serogroups (range, 11%-27%) did not significantly change overall. Although no change was detected among isolates collected from children with spontaneous drainage, the percentage of pneumococci recovered at the time of myringotomy and/or tympanostomy tube placement that were nonresistant to penicillin decreased over time (from 73% in 1999 to 53% in 2002; P = .03). All of the serotype 3 strains were genetically related, whereas 88% of the isolates that were either serotype 19F or serotype 23F were related to 1 of 3 international clones. CONCLUSIONS Among children with AOM, the proportion of cases due to non-PCV7 serogroups increased, vaccine-related serotypes increased, and serotype 19F remained unchanged. Although a decrease in the proportion of cases due to PNSP occurred among children who required myringotomy and/or tympanostomy tube placement, the proportion of PNSP remained unchanged overall and among children with spontaneous drainage. Because future trends in the susceptibility patterns of pneumococcal isolates recovered from children with AOM are not easy to predict, continued surveillance is essential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between changes in ablation rate of enamel with irradiation time was investigated to find the most effective irradiation time for tooth ablation by Er:YAG laser. BACKGROUND DATA Previous studies have shown that the Er:YAG laser has the ability to ablate tooth material effectively, but that the efficiency and effectiveness of ablation are determined by various parameters such as energy, pulse frequency, the amount of water, and irradiation time. METHODS Contact and non-contact irradiation of the Er:YAG laser were carried out respectively for 1, 3, 5, and 7 s on the enamel surface of each specimen using a combination of a 400 mJ/pulse at 20 Hz and water flow rate of 6.75 mL/min, and quantitative measurements using a mass balance were performed to compare the resulting ablation rates. RESULTS The ablation weight, by taking the mean of both contact and non-contact irradiation, generally increased with irradiation exposure time, but no significant increases in ablation were seen in specimens that had been exposed for > 3 s in either the contact or non-contact irradiation group. Results in the non-contact irradiation group indicated superior ablation of enamel compared to that in the contact irradiation group. CONCLUSION Irradiation exposure of < or = 3 s per application of laser beam is recommended to ablate enamel effectively in both non-contact and contact irradiation.

Abstract
We investigated the ability of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 to spread in wounded apple tissue by transmission electron microscopy. Red Delicious apples were wounded with an artist knife (7 mm depth) and either inoculated with 10 microl per wound of decimally diluted E. coli O157:H7 or submerged into E. coli O157:H7 suspended in sterile distilled water and then stored at 37 degrees C for 24 h. Transmission electron microscopy showed E. coli O157:H7 formed bacterial aggregates near the apple cell walls, and single cells were in close proximity to the apple cell wall surfaces and to plasma membranes. E. coli O157:H7 presence caused degradation of plasma membranes and release of the cytoplasm contents of the apple cortical cells into the central vacuole. Apple tissue turgor pressure tests showed that the apple cells infected with E. coli O157:H7 isolates were more likely to rupture than the control noninoculated apple cells. E. coli O157:H7 cells grown in apple tissue showed the formation of granules and vesicles within the bacterial cytoplasma and separation of the plasma membranes. Our study shows that E. coli O157:H7 can grow and survive in the apple tissue environment by causing degradation of the apple cellular components.

Abstract
Cerebral lipiodol embolism (CLE) is a rare complication that may occur during chemoembolization. The authors present three cases of CLE during transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma. Multiple small nonconfluent hyperintense intracerebral lesions were found on the diffusion-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI. Clinical signs completely resolved and MRI lesions markedly improved on follow-up evaluation within a 3-week period.

Abstract
Microwave radiometry is a spectral measurement technique for resolving the electromagnetic radiation of matter when its temperature is above absolute zero. The radio-thermometer utilises this technique and consequently can provide temperature distributions in subcutaneous biological tissues. A new phantom was proposed that imitates a mammary gland tumour, and the brightness temperature was observed using radio-thermometers operated at different frequencies, 1.75GHz and 3GHz. The proposed phantom, simulating heat diffusion propagated by tissues around real tumours, revealed that the thermal characteristics of the tumour imitator were well matched to the heat transfer properties of a real tumour and a proportional linear relationship between the location of the tumour imitator and the brightness temperature in a homogenous medium was established. From experiments using the proposed mammary gland tumour phantom and a clinical trial on patients with breast cancer, it could be concluded that a radio-thermometer with a short wavelength (lambda = 10cm, i.e. f= 3GHz) is useful to resolve a thermal anomaly at a shallow depth in an homogenous medium such as a breast.

Abstract
Inhibition of "Calypso" cucumber seedling growth by rye allelochemicals, 2(3H)-benzoxazolinone BOA and 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4(2H)-benzoxazin-3-one DIBOA, was studied by analyzing the growth of seedling tissues and organs. Light and electron microscopy of seedling root cells were also carried out to investigate the mechanism(s) of root growth inhibition and mode of action of these compounds. BOA inhibited root elongation and reduced the number of cucumber lateral roots by 77 and 100% at 0.1 and 0.43 mg BOA/ml deionized (DI) water, respectively. DIBOA also inhibited root growth, but did not affect the number of lateral roots. BOA increased size of cucumber cortical root cells fivefold, but DIBOA had no effect. Both compounds reduced the regeneration of root cap cells and increased the width of cortical cells resulting in increased root diameter. BOA and DIBOA caused increased cytoplasmic vacuolation, reduced ribosome density and dictyosomes, reduced number of mitochondria, and reduced lipid catabolism. Starch granules in amyloplasts of seedling roots treated with BOA and DIBOA were also greatly reduced compared to the control. Changes in cellular ultrastructure indicated that BOA and DIBOA reduced root growth by disrupting lipid metabolism, reducing protein synthesis, and reducing transport or secretory capabilities.

Abstract
The equilibrium structures and binding energies of the benzene complexes of p-benzoquinones (PBQ) and its negatively charged anionic species (PBQ- and PBQ2-) have been investigated theoretically using second-order Møller-Plesset calculations. While neutral p-benzoquinone-benzene clusters (PBQ-Bz) prefer to have a parallel displaced geometry (P-c), CH...pi interactions (T-shaped geometries) prevail in the di-anionic PBQ-benzene (PBQ2- -Bz) complexes (T-e2-). Studies on dianionic p-benzoquinone-benzene clusters showed that two nonbonded intermolecular interactions compete in the most stable conformation. One is H-bonding interaction (C-H...O type) between carbonyl oxygen of p-benzoquinone and one of the hydrogen atoms of benzene, and the other is a pi-H interaction between pi-electron cloud of PBQ2- and another hydrogen atom of benzene. Blueshifted H-bonds were observed in T-shaped clusters. The changes in the geometrical preference of PBQ-Bz complex upon addition of electrons would be useful in designing optimized molecular mechanical devices based on the edge-to-face and face-to-face aromatic interactions.

Abstract
In a randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled study, we compared the efficacy of capsicum plaster (PAS) applied at the Korean hand acupuncture point for the prevention of postoperative sore throat in 150 patients scheduled to undergo abdominal hysterectomy. The K group had PAS applied at the K-A20 of both hands and placebo tape at both non-acupoints. The PAS was applied prior to induction of anaesthesia and removed 8 h postoperatively. The sore throat scores of Group K were significantly lower than those of other groups at 24 h following surgery (p = 0.00027). The prevalence of moderate to severe sore throat at 24 h was lower for Group K (0%) than for sham and placebo controls (16%[p = 0.038] and 19%[p = 0.032], respectively). There were no differences in the recovery room of the sore throat scores for all groups. We found that the PAS applied at the K-A20 was an alternative method for reducing postoperative sore throat.

Abstract
Abstract Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was performed to infer the magnitude and pattern of genetic differentiation among boll weevil populations from eighteen locations across eight US states and north-east Mexico. Sixty-seven reproducible bands from six random primers were analysed for genetic variation within and between weevil populations. Genetic and geographical distances among all populations were positively correlated, reflecting a pattern of isolation by distance within a larger metapopulation. Gene flow between south-central, western and eastern regions is limited, but migration between locations within regions appears to be relatively frequent up to distances of approximately 300-400 km. However, estimates of effective migration were much lower than those estimated from mtDNA-RFLP data reported previously.

Abstract
We aimed to determine the seroprevalence of poliovirus antibody in Korea by using the cell culture neutralization method recommended by the WHO. A total of 500 sera collected from children at eight primary schools in Kyunggi province were used for this study. We found that 82.2% of children were positive for all three types of poliovirus and antibody-positive rates for types I, II and III were 94.4, 96.6 and 86.8% respectively, indicating that seropositive rates for types I and II were considerably higher than for type III (P<0.0001). This result implies that the type III component of the oral polio vaccine should be evaluated further. Although a greater number of children, including young infants, need to be tested for seroprevalence, this study still provides us with valuable information on the effectiveness of vaccination against polioviruses in Korea.

Abstract
The sites and modes of interaction between G protein-coupled receptors and their cognate heterotrimeric G proteins remain poorly defined. The C-terminus of the Galpha subunit is the best established site of contact of G proteins with receptors, but structural analyses and crosslinking studies suggest the possibility of interactions at the N-terminus of Galpha as well. We screened for mutations in the N-terminal region of the Galpha subunit encoded by the yeast GPA1 gene that specifically affect the ability of the G protein to be activated by the yeast alpha-mating factor receptor. The screen led to identification of substitutions of glutamine or proline for Leu18 of Gpa1p that reduce the response to the pheromones alpha-factor and a-factor without affecting cellular levels of the subunit or its ability to interact with beta and gamma subunits. The mutations do not appear to affect the intrinsic ability of the G protein to be converted to the activated state. The low yield of different mutations with this phenotype indicates either that the N-terminal segment of the yeast Galpha subunit does not undergo extensive interactions with the alpha-factor receptor, or that this region can not be altered without detrimental effects upon the formation of G protein trimers.

Abstract
ABSTRACT When two unrelated plant viruses infect a plant simultaneously, synergistic viral interactions often occur resulting in devastating diseases. This study was initiated to examine ultrastructural virus-virus interactions of mixed viral infections. Mixed infections were induced using potyviruses and viruses from other plant virus families. Novel ultrastructural paracrystalline arrays composed of co-infecting viruses, referred to as mixed virus particle aggregates (MVPAs), were noted in the majority of the mixed infections studied. When the flexuous rod-shaped potyvirus particles involved in MVPAs were sectioned transversely, specific geometrical patterns were noted within some doubly infected cells. Although similar geometrical patterns were associated with MVPAs of various virus combinations, unique characteristics within patterns were consistent in each mixed infection virus pair. Centrally located virus particles within some MVPAs appeared swollen (Southern bean mosaic virus mixed with Blackeye cowpea mosaic virus, Cucumber mosaic virus mixed with Blackeye cowpea mosaic virus, and Sunn hemp mosaic virus mixed with Soybean mosaic virus). This ultrastructural study complements molecular studies of mixed infections of plant viruses by adding the additional dimension of visualizing the interactions between the coinfecting viruses.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a 34-kD protein with multiple biological properties. Recent clinical and preclinical observations implicate a role for apoE in modifying the response of the brain to focal and global ischemia. One mechanism by which apoE might exert these effects is by reducing glutamate-induced excitotoxic neuronal injury associated with ischemic insults. We demonstrate that human recombinant apoE confers a mild neuroprotective effect in primary neuronal-glial cultures exposed to 100 microM N-methyl-D-aspartate. Furthermore, a peptide derived from the receptor-binding region of apoE (residues 133-149) maintained a significant helical population as assessed by circular dichroism, and completely suppressed the neuronal cell death and calcium influx associated with N-methyl-D-aspartate exposure. Neuroprotection was greatest when the peptide was added concurrently with N-methyl-D-aspartate; however, a significant protection was observed when peptide was preincubated and washed off prior to N-methyl-D-aspartate exposure. These results suggest that one mechanism by which apoE may modify the CNS response to ischemia is by partially blocking glutamate excitotoxicity. Moreover, small peptide fragments derived from the receptor-binding region of apoE have enhanced bioactivity compared with the intact holoprotein, and may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of brain ischemia.

Abstract
Thyroid related autoantibodies have been related to the development of encephalopathy, known as Hashimoto's encephalopathy. However, their relation with the encephalopathy occurring in patients with Graves' disease has not been well established. The case is reported of a 51 year old woman presenting with subacute progressive dementia with evidence of hyperthyroidism. She had Graves' disease associated with high titres of thyroid related autoantibodies. Her encephalopathy was not improved by antithyroid drugs, but promptly responded to corticosteroid treatment, and stabilised with a gradual reduction of thyroid related autoantibody titres. Brain positron emission tomography initially showed a diffuse and multifocal cerebral hypometabolism with subsequent normalisation on her clinical recovery, which was consistent with the acute and reversible cerebral inflammation probably mediated by autoimmune mechanisms.

Abstract
The present study was carried out to observe the cytotoxicity of yellow sand in comparison with silica and titanium dioxide in a rat alveolar type II cell line (RLE-6TN). Yellow sand (China Loess) was obtained from the loess layer in the Gunsu Province of China. The mean particle diameter of yellow sand was about 0.003 +/- 0.001 mm. Major elements of yellow sand were Si(27.7 +/- 0.6%), Al(6.01 +/- 0.17%), and Ca(5.83 +/- 0.23%) in that order. Silica and yellow sand significantly decreased cell viability and increased [Ca2+]i. All three particles increased the generation of H2O2. TiO2 did not change Fenton activity, while silica induced a slight increase of Fenton activity. In contrast, yellow sand induced a significant increase of Fenton activity. Silica, yellow sand and TiO2 induced significant nitrite formations in RLE-6TN cells. Silica showed the highest increase in nitrite formation, while yellow sand induced the least formation of nitrite. Silica and yellow sand increased the release of TNF-a. Based on these results, we suggest that yellow sand can induce cytotoxicity in RLE-6TN cells and reactive oxygen species, Fenton activity and reactive nitrogen species might be involved in this toxicity.

Abstract
The effect of the anticonvulsant gabapentin on neuropathic pain was studied in six male patients with Fabry disease, aged 15-45 years. After 4 weeks of treatment, pain, as measured using the Brief Pain Inventory, was decreased compared with baseline. Treatment was generally well tolerated. This study indicates that gabapentin should be considered as a treatment option for the neuropathic pain of Fabry disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the imaging features of ischial bursitis with an emphasis on ultrasonography (US). DESIGN AND PATIENTS Our study included 31 patients with a painful mass or tenderness in their buttock who underwent US (n=27), CT (n=1), or MR imaging (n=4). A needle aspiration (n=6) or a bursal excision (n=5) was performed in those patients who had no clinical improvement in spite of the conservative treatment. Evaluation included lesion location, size, wall of the bursae, and intrinsic characteristics on US, CT and MR imaging. RESULTS Ischial bursitis was superficial to the ischial tuberosity in all patients (n=31). The lesion ranged from 1.5 cm to 7 cm (average 3.8 cm) in diameter. The bursal wall was identifiable in 25 cases (81%). Internal septa and mural nodules were seen in 12 (39%) and 17 cases (55%), respectively. Sonography showed that fluid within the bursa was hypoechoic (59%), hyperechoic (26%), or of mixed echogenicity (15%). The bursae were compressible by the transducer. Power Doppler examination (n=7) showed hypervascularity of the bursal wall. All lesions imaged with contrast-enhanced CT and MR imaging had an enhancing thin wall and mural nodule. CONCLUSIONS Ischial bursitis, superficial to the ischial tuberosity, can be clearly demonstrated on sonography and appears as a thin-walled cystic lesion, with or without internal septa and mural nodules.

Abstract
We studied 29 retrieved smooth-surfaced hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated acetabular cups that had been in situ for an average of 54.9 months. The outer surface of all cups carried two circular grooves dividing the smooth surface. The extent of bony in-growth and hydroxyapatite absorption was calculated using a computer imaging system (analySIS-pro 3.0, Soft Imaging System GmbH, Germany). Absorption of HA was seen in all 29 cups. The extent of absorption was, on average, 60.5%. Twenty-five cups showed bony in-growth covering an average of 13.8% of the cup surface. Thirteen cups showed bony in-growth on the smooth surface as well as the circular grooves. On 11 cups, the bony in-growth was confined to the grooves. We found that bony in-growth on the smooth-surfaced HA-coated acetabular cup was minimal. It occurred along the two circular grooves rather than on the smooth surfaces. We conclude that a macro-structure surface enhancing bony in-growth is necessary for the long-term survival of the studied cup.

Abstract
We have evaluated PCR-RFLP as a practical method for rapid typing of enteroviruses causing aseptic meningitis in Korea. Through blind examination of 80 clinical isolates from patients with aseptic meningitis, we have compared the results of conventional serotyping with PCR-RFLP based genotyping, which was developed for this study. Among the 80 case isolates, which had been previously typed by routine neutralization test, only 42 cases (52.5%) were matched with typing by PCR-RFLP. The result clearly demonstrated that the enterovirus serotype does not coincide with the genotype. Therefore, the classification of enteroviruses by genotyping with PCR-RFLP, although rapid and simple, may be complicated by regional or seasonal differences. However, the PCR-RFLP method developed in this study is applicable to the epidemiological study of enteroviruses when regional or seasonal differences exist, and is useful in identifying the source of an infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Der p 2 isoallergens have been reported and the possibility of different allergenicity has also been suggested. In addition, the quantification with 2-site ELISA may be affected by the isoallergens. OBJECTIVES Two different recombinant Der p 2 (rDer p 2) isoallergens were compared in terms of human IgE responses and the reliability of quantification of them with two-site ELISA kits which use monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) as capture and detection of Der p 2. METHODS Seven different Der p 2 cDNA from the cultured Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP) were cloned and polymorphism in nine amino acid residues was found. Two different recombinant isoallergens (rDer p 2A and rDer p 2B) were expressed and compared to their human IgE immune responses by ELISA and the ELISA inhibition test with 23 sera of DP-allergic patients. The reliability of quantification of two different available 2-site ELISA kits, which used mAbs for capture and detection of Der p 2, was evaluated. RESULTS The ELISA optical density of rDer p 2B-specific IgE (sIgE) was higher than that of rDer p 2A (P < 0.001). The ELISA inhibition curve of rDer p 2B sIgE in pool I sera (n = 5; high sIgE both to rDer p 2A and rDer p 2B) did not show any differences in the 50% inhibition concentration and maximum inhibitory percentage of rDer p 2A and rDer p 2B sIgE. However, with pool II sera (n = 5; markedly higher sIgE to rDer p 2B than rDer p 2A), the 50% inhibitory concentrations (10 microg/mL vs. 40 ng/mL) and maximum inhibitory percentage (61% vs. 99%) of rDer p 2B sIgE with the two recombinant isoallergens were quite different. rDer p 2B could be quantified with two different 2-site ELISA kits, but rDer p 2A was detected by only one kit. CONCLUSION We conclude that isoallergens of Der p 2 may have different IgE immune responses. Quantification of Der p 2 with 2-site ELISA kits that adopted mAbs, might be affected by the prevalent form of the isoallergens in reservoir dust.

Abstract
In order to assess the genetic variability and population structure of north-east Asian cattle, 13 microsatellite loci were analysed for a total of 200 individuals including Korean, Chinese, Japanese Black and European Holstein cattle. Observed and expected heterozygosity, two estimators (F(ST) and G(ST)) of gene differentiation, and Nei's DA distance were evaluated. Based on expected mean heterozygosity, the lowest genetic diversity was exhibited in Japanese Black cattle (H(E)=0.471), and the highest in Chinese cattle (H(E)=0.744). Korean cattle revealed a relatively high degree of genetic diversity (H(E)=0.728). Average proportion of genetic variation because of interpopulation subdivision among north-east Asian cattle varied between 10.9 and 9.9%, depending on the estimator used. N-J tree based on Nei's DA genetic distance showed that Korean and Chinese cattle are closely related, whereas Japanese Black cattle are clearly distinct from the other two populations, forming a north-east Asian outgroup.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physiotherapy on rehabilitation of patients who had temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. The treatment group consisted of 22 post-surgical patients who were treated with physiotherapy, and the non-treatment group consisted of 22 post-surgical patients who received no physiotherapy. The assessment tools were made using visual analogue scale (VAS) and craniomandibular index (CMI) which consisted of dysfunction index (DI) and palpation index (PI). All patients received follow-up for 7 months. The subjects were measured three times; before surgery, 6 weeks after surgery and 7 months after surgery. On the 6 week post-surgery assessment, DI and total CMI scores of the treatment group were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of the non-treatment group. On the assessment performed 7 months after surgery, all variables were significantly lower (P < 0.05) for the treatment group compared with those of the non-treatment group. The findings of the study indicate that physiotherapy has a positive effect in relieving pain and restoring TMJ function after surgery.
