Abstract
We have identified cobalt-base superalloys showing a high-temperature strength greater than those of conventional nickel-base superalloys. The cobalt-base alloys are strengthened by a ternary compound with the L1(2) structure, gamma' Co3(Al,W), which precipitates in the disordered gamma face-centered cubic cobalt matrix with high coherency and with high melting points. We also identified a ternary compound, gamma' Ir3(Al,W), with the L1(2) structure, which suggests that the Co-Ir-Al-W-base systems with gamma+gamma' (Co,Ir)3(Al,W) structures offer great promise as candidates for next-generation high-temperature materials.

Abstract
Most esophageal carcinosarcomas are diagnosed as so-called carcinosarcoma, in which individual elements may be derived from a single common ancestor cell, and there have been a few reports describing true carcinosarcoma originating from two individual stem cells. We describe a case of esophageal carcinosarcoma exhibiting neoplastic osteoid formation. Immunoreactivity for vimentin and p53 was limited to only the sarcomatous component and was absent in the carcinomatous component. Furthermore, a point mutation in exon 7 of the p53 gene was observed only in the sarcomatous component. Both sarcoma and carcinoma cells distinctively metastasized to different lymph nodes. These observations led us to diagnose the esophageal tumor as a true carcinosarcoma.

Abstract
Large magnetic-field-induced strains have been observed in Heusler alloys with a body-centred cubic ordered structure and have been explained by the rearrangement of martensite structural variants due to an external magnetic field. These materials have attracted considerable attention as potential magnetic actuator materials. Here we report the magnetic-field-induced shape recovery of a compressively deformed NiCoMnIn alloy. Stresses of over 100 MPa are generated in the material on the application of a magnetic field of 70 kOe; such stress levels are approximately 50 times larger than that generated in a previous ferromagnetic shape-memory alloy. We observed 3 per cent deformation and almost full recovery of the original shape of the alloy. We attribute this deformation behaviour to a reverse transformation from the antiferromagnetic (or paramagnetic) martensitic to the ferromagnetic parent phase at 298 K in the Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 single crystal.

Abstract
We have investigated the spin dynamics using 17O-NMR in the bilayered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, which sits close to a metamagnetic quantum critical point. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T1T is enhanced on approaching the metamagnetic critical field of approximately 7.9 T, and at the critical field 1/T1T continues to increase and does not show Fermi-liquid behavior down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of T1T in this region suggests the critical temperature Theta to be approximately 0 K, which is strong evidence that the spin dynamics possesses a quantum critical character. Comparison between uniform susceptibility and 1/T1T reveals that antiferromagnetic fluctuations instead of two-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations dominate the spin fluctuation spectrum at the critical field, which is unexpected for itinerant metamagnetism.

Abstract
Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the causative agent of human eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia. Prominent eosinophilia in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the patients has been used as one of the diagnostic criteria for the disease but the role(s) of the CSF eosinophils has remained to be elucidated. In this article, Kentaro Yoshimura, Hiroko Sugaya and Kazuto Ishido discuss the involvement of CSF eosinophils in the killing of intracranial worms and the damage of the central nervous system of the hosts, and consider why eosinophils in A. cantonensis infection play a more important role in nonpermissive hosts (including humans) than in the permissive rat host.

Abstract
The effect of applied strain on martensitic transformation in a superelastic Ti(46.4)Ni(47.6)Nb(6.0) alloy at room temperature was investigated by tensile tests, differential scanning calorimetry measurements, and X-ray diffraction. Reverse transformation starting (A(s)) and finishing (A(f)) temperatures increased with the application of tensile-strain over 13%, the undeformed specimen showing A(s) = -29.2 degrees C and A(f) = 17.9 degrees C, while the 13% predeformed alloy exhibited A(s) = 37.1 degrees C and A(f) = 40.2 degrees C. Furthermore, the values of the A(s) and A(f) for the predeformed alloy almost recovered to those of the undeformed alloy when heated to about 42 degrees C and then showed superelasticity again at room temperature. This characteristic is significant for application in sensors, actuators, and medical devices. Especially, medical stents with such qualities show promise as a new class of self-expandable stents with both excellent mountability and deliverability.

Abstract
A 66-year-old woman underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Postoperative angiography on postoperative day (POD) 11 revealed that right internal thoracic artery (RITA) anastomosed to left anterior descending artery (LAD) had a kinking. The angiography performed 30 months after operation revealed no specific changes in the kinking of RITA and in the left ventricular function. Another case was a 74-year-old man with chronic renal failure under hemodialysis. He underwent CABG with left internal thoracic artery (LITA) to LAD. Post-operatively he had chest pain during hemodialysis. On POD 10, angiography revealed that LITA had a kinking with moderate stenosis and normal left ventricular function. The angiography performed 10 months after operation revealed no specific changes in the kinking of LITA. However, left ventriculography revealed akinesis in the antero-apical region. It suggested that the viability was lost due to the graft kinking of LITA and steal phenomenon on hemodialysis.

Abstract
To establish a baseline for conservation of a threatened clonal tree, Magnolia tomentosa, we investigated size distribution and genetic structure within a population, using six microsatellite markers. Within the study site, 1044 living ramets (stems) were distinguished into 175 genets (individuals). The mean number of ramets per genet was 5.97, and 76% of all genets had multiple ramets. Genets, which apparently produced new ramets through sprouting and layering, were generally composed of several large ramets and many small ramets. Spatial autocorrelation analysis of microsatellite alleles revealed positive autocorrelation over short distances for both ramets and genets. The Moran's I-value of ramets in the shortest distance class was 3.8 times larger than that of genets, reflecting the effect of clonal growth. To analyse the size-class differences in genetic structure, the 175 genets were separated into two size classes, small and large. The correlogram for the small genets exhibited positive spatial autocorrelation in the shortest distance class, but this was not the case for the correlogram for the large genets, indicating that genetic structure is weakened or lost through self-thinning as the genets grow. The FIS value over all loci for the small genets was positive and deviated significantly from zero, while the corresponding value for the large genets was close to zero. The excess homozygotes in the small genets may be the result of genetic substructuring and/or inbreeding, and the reduction in homozygote frequency from the small to large genets may be because of loss of genetic structure and/or inbreeding depression.

Abstract
101Ru-Knight shift (101K) in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 was measured under magnetic fields parallel to the c axis (perpendicular to the RuO2 plane), which is the promising superconducting (SC) d-vector direction in a zero field. We succeeded in measuring K(c) in the field range from 200 to 1200 Oe and at temperatures down to 80 mK, using nuclear-quadrupole-resonance spectra. We found that (101)K(c) is invariant with respect to the field and temperature on passing through H(c2) and T(c) above 200 Oe. This indicates that the spin susceptibility along the c axis does not change in the SC state, at least, in the field greater than 200 Oe. The results imply that the SC d vector is in the RuO2 plane when the magnetic field is applied to the c axis.

Abstract
The effect of Lactobacillus reuteri against one of the major cariogenic organism, Streptococcus mutans, was studied. Yogurt products containing L.reuteri showed a significant growth inhibitory effect against S. mutans, whilst yoghurts with lactobaccilli other than L. reuteri did not show such inhibition. Further, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that consuming yogurt with L. reuteri significantly reduced the oral carriage of mutans streptococci, compared with the placebo yogurt.

Abstract
We report novel magnetic properties in the slightly hole-doped Mott-insulator La(2-x)SrxCuO4 via the La-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. At x=0.018, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) La-NQR spectrum affected by internal fields comes out as the temperature decreases below T(N) approximately 150 K, whereas the nonmagnetic one persists to be observed down to a temperature T(f) approximately 20 K at which the nuclear-relaxation rate has a pronounced peak. This demonstrates that the phase separation of nonmagnetic and AFM phases occurs between T(f) and T(N). The novel phase separation is suggested as due to the partial destruction of the AFM phase caused by mobile holes via the formation of an extended spin-singlet state between Cu-derived spins and hole spins.

Abstract
AIMS Arterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease, but the impact of post-challenge hyperglycaemia on arterial stiffness is unknown. To investigate the association between arterial stiffness and post-challenge hyperglycaemia, we measured the second derivative of photoplethysmogram as an indicator of arterial stiffness. METHODS This study was done in 159 asymptomatic Japanese men aged 50.7 +/- 13.0 years. All subjects underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and measurement of the second derivative of photoplethysmogram. RESULTS According to the World Health Organization criteria (1998), 110 subjects had normal glucose tolerance, 10 had impaired fasting glucose, 30 had impaired glucose tolerance, and nine had diabetes. The b/a ratio (an index of arterial stiffness) showed a significant relationship with age (r = 0.58, P < 0.0001), height (r = -0.33, P < 0.0001), 2-h post-challenge glucose (r = 0.32, P < 0.0001), systolic blood pressure (r = 0.22, P = 0.006), and diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.21, P = 0.009). After adjustment for age and height, there were significant correlations between the b/a ratio and diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.18, P = 0.02), fasting glucose (r = 0.16, P = 0.049), and 2-h post-challenge glucose (r = 0.21, P = 0.009). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that only age (beta= 0.006, SE = 0.0007, P < 0.001) and 2-h post-challenge glucose (beta = 0.0005, SE = 0.0002, P < 0.05) contributed significantly to the b/a ratio (adjusted R(2) = 0.38). CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that post-challenge hyperglycaemia is an independent risk factor for arterial stiffness.

Abstract
We present measurements on ultraclean single crystals of the bilayered ruthenate metal Sr3Ru2O7, which has a magnetic-field-tuned quantum critical point. Quantum oscillations of differing frequencies can be seen in the resistivity both below and above its metamagnetic transition. This frequency shift corresponds to a small change in the Fermi surface volume that is qualitatively consistent with the small moment change in the magnetization across the metamagnetic transition. Very near the metamagnetic field, unusual behavior is seen. There is a strong enhancement of the resistivity in a narrow field window, with a minimum in the resistivity as a function of temperature below 1 K that becomes more pronounced as the disorder level decreases. The region of anomalous behavior is bounded at low temperatures by two first-order phase transitions. The implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract
We developed an in vitro ATP assay technique to extract cellular and fungal ATP separately, which allowed to evaluate quantitatively the adhesion of the yeasts to monolayers of human gingival epithelial cells. Thirteen isolates of Candida spp. representing three species (i.e. Candida albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata) were used in the present study. When the adherent capacity of the Candida species was compared, C. albicans exhibited highest capacity of adherence to gingival epithelial cells, followed by C. tropicalis, and C. glabrata was the lowest [analysis of variance (ANOVA), P < 0.01]. The germ tubes of C. albicans exhibited significantly higher adherence capacity than their blastoconidia cells (ANOVA, P < 0.01), which was not observed with a C. albicans isolate, defect of germ tube formation. Our results suggested that the adherence of C. albicans is promoted by germ tube formation and may play an important role in the pathogenesis of the fungus.

Abstract
Argyrophilic dark neurons (DNs) reflect the early histopathological state of neurons following various brain insults. We examined the fate of DNs, about to either die or recover, following two types (heavy and light damage) of brain insult. Wistar rats were injected ibotenic acid unilaterally into the hippocampal CA1 region (ibotenic acid [IA] injection) or were forced to swim (SWIM). Argyrophil III (DNs)-, activated caspase-3 immuno-, TUNEL- and hematoxylin-eosin (H-E)-staining and ultrastructural examinations were then performed. One to three hours after IA injection, typical DNs (argyrophilic both in somata and dendrites) with corkscrew-like dendrites were densely packed in the pyramidal cell layer of hippocampal CA1 around the injection site. After 12-24 h, DNs were argyrophilic only in the somata and proximal dendrites but absent in distal dendrites in the CA1 region. However, at this time typical DNs were found in remote areas. At 3 h, caspase-3 activation was detected at the injection site, which increased to a peak level after 12 h. Three to 7 days after injection, TUNEL positive cells were detected in the CA1 pyramidal cell layer. Immediately following SWIM, "brown" rather than "dark" neurons were detected in the various areas and most frequently in the CA1 pyramidal cell layer. No typical DNs were detected over the first 3 days. Some activation of caspase-3 was detected in a few CA3 pyramidal cells but no TUNEL-positive cells were detected. Ultrastructural examination revealed a diffuse distribution of aggregated silver particles in the dendrites and cytoplasm of pyramidal cells at the sites of IA injection. After SWIM, silver particles were detected mainly on mitochondria of affected cells. These data suggest that DNs provide a measure of neuronal damage: typically dark neurons with broad damage to the cytoskeleton of dendrites would die, while non-typical brown neurons, that may have a disturbance in mitochondria, predominantly survive.

Abstract
We analyzed 44 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) from November 2001 to March 2003. Of 44 patients, 40 patients (29 men and 11 women; mean age 68.1 +/- 9.2 years) underwent off-pump CABG (OPCAB) [90.9%]. The mean number of bypass grafts was 2.53 +/- 0.78. In-hospital mortality was none and major complications except for one case of reexploration for bleeding were not seen. The early patency rate of over-all grafts was 94.6%. The quality of OPCAB was considered to be equivalent to conventional CABG.

Abstract
A series of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)s [P(3HB-co-4HB)s] with different 4HB content, biosynthesized by Ralstonia eutropha H16 with mixed carbon sources of 4-hydroxybutyric acid (4HBA) and butyric acid, were fractionated by solvent/nonsolvent fractionation into copolyester fractions with different 4HB content and narrower compositional distribution. The fractions obtained were classified into two groups, 3HB- and 4HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB)s. The thermal properties were investigated for these fractionated copolyesters. With increasing 4HB content, the melting temperature at first decreased while 3HB content was rich, and then increased while 4HB content was rich. The glass transition temperature decreased linearly with increasing 4HB content. The 4HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB) was found to be immiscible with the 3HB-rich P(3HB-co-4HB), as two glass transitions corresponding to those of respective P(3HB-co-4HB)s were observed by DSC. It was concluded that as-produced bacterial P(3HB-co-4HB) samples used in this study should be considered as immiscible polymer blends.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine whether insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) gene delivery by electroporation promotes repair after muscle injury. An injury-repair model was created using mice in which a hamstring muscle was cut and sutured. A total of 50 microg of IGF-I DNA or green fluorescent protein (GFP) DNA (both in pCAGGS) was injected into the lesion and introduced into muscle cells by electrostimulation using an electric pulse generator. The number of regenerating muscle fibers in the IGF-I DNA group was significantly more than that in the GFP DNA group at 2 weeks after injection. The diameter of regenerating muscle fibers from the IGF-I DNA group was larger than that of the GFP DNA group at 4 weeks after injection. There was no significant difference in the serum IGF-I concentration between the IGF-I DNA group and the GFP DNA group at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after injection. However, muscle IGF-I concentration in the IGF-I DNA injection group was significantly greater than that in the GFP DNA injection group at 2 weeks after injection. These results demonstrated that the effects of enhanced IGF-I production were local and limited to the injected area. The ratio (injected/uninjected; intact) of the amplitude of compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) in the IGF-I DNA injection group was greater than that in the GFP DNA injection group at 4 weeks after injection and of the control group. In conclusion, IGF-I gene transfer by electroporation proved to be a simple, safe, inexpensive, and effective method to promote the regeneration of injured muscles in our injury model.

Abstract
A systematic experimental study on muon-catalyzed fusion was conducted using a series of solid deuterium and tritium mixtures. A variety of conditions were investigated, i.e., tritium concentrations from 20% to 70%, and temperatures from 5 to 16 K. With decreasing temperature, we observed an unexpected decrease in the muon cycling rate (lambda(c)) and an increase in the muon loss probability (W). The origins of these observed changes were interpreted by the temperature-dependence in the dt mu formation process for lambda(c) and that in the muon reactivation process after muon-to-alpha sticking for W.

Abstract
Several recent reports imply the possibility of cariogenicity and periodontal disease linked to denture plaque containing Candida albicans. Adhesion of oral bacteria and Candida species to the extracellular matrix, such as type I collagen, fibronectin and denatured type I collagen, was examined by using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) analysis. The adhesion of C. albicans to intact and denatured type I collagen was significantly greater than those of oral bacteria and other species of Candida. This result suggests that C. albicans possesses the ability to adhere specifically to extracellular matrix, as compared with other Candida species or oral bacteria.

Abstract
We report a 29Si NMR study on aligned single crystals of YbRh2Si2 which shows behavior characteristic of a quantum critical point (QCP: T(N)-->0). The Knight shift K and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T(1) of Si show a strong dependence on the external field H, especially below 5 kOe. At the lowest H used in this measurement (H approximately 1.5 kOe), it was found that 1/T(1)T continues to increase down to 50 mK, whereas K stays constant with a large magnitude below 200 mK. This result strongly suggests the development of antiferromagnetic fluctuations with finite q vectors that compete with q=0 spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the QCP near H=0.5 kOe.

Abstract
The egg-type core microstructure where one alloy encases another has previously been obtained during experiments in space. Working with copper-iron base alloys prepared by conventional gas atomization, we were able to obtain this microstructure under gravity conditions. The minor liquid phase always formed the core of the egg, and it sometimes also formed a shell layer. The origin of the formation of this core microstructure can be explained by Marangoni motion on the basis of the temperature dependence of the interfacial energy, which shows that this type of powder can be formed even if the cooling rate is very high.

Abstract
We report (27)Al Knight shift ( (27)K) measurement on a single-crystal UNi(2)Al(3) that reveals a coexistence of superconductivity and a spin-density-wave (SDW) type of magnetic ordering ( T(SDW) = 4.5 K). The spin part of (27)K, (27)K(s), does not change down to 50 mK across the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T(c) approximately 0.9 K. In contrast with the isostructural compound UPd(2)Al(3) ( T(c) approximately 2 K), which was identified to be a spin-singlet d-wave superconductor, the behavior of (27)K strongly supports that UNi(2)Al(3) , like UPt(3) and Sr(2)RuO(4), belongs to a class of spin-triplet SC pairing state superconductors.

Abstract
Changes in hemorheological parameters were studied in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease and elderly healthy men who ingested ethanol at 0.5 and 1 g/kg body weight. Following ingestion of 1 g/kg, but not 0.5 g/kg of ethanol, there were significant changes in hemorheologic factors. Whole blood viscosity (WBV, shear rate: 18.8, 37.5, 75, 150, 350 sec(-1)) and blood viscosity corrected for hematocrit (BVC) were increased. WBV and BVC at high shear rate were increased and red blood cell deformability impaired in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease, while those factors were not significantly changed in healthy men. It is considered that ethanol ingestion could has bad influences for the microcirculation in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic usefulness of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by surgery in patients with clinically T4 (cT4) esophageal cancer involving adjacent organs such as the trachea, main bronchi, and large vessels. Thirty-seven patients with cT4 squamous cell carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus were enrolled in this study. The CRT regimen comprised cisplatin (70 mg/m2) on day 1, 5-fluorouracil (700 mg/m2) on days 1-4 and external irradiation (200 cGy/day, total 30 Gy) on either days 8-26 (sequential schedule, n=15) or days 1-19 (concurrent schedule, n022). Two courses of CRT were given. The results of CRT were complete response in nine patients, partial response in 19, no change in three (minor response in two), and progressive disease in six patients. The median response duration in all responders was 172 days (range: 56-2469, n=19). After CRT, 13 patients received surgery. In 12 of these patients, tumors were completely resected. Histopathologic examination of the resected specimen revealed a discrepancy between clinical response and histopathologic effect. The median duration of survival and the 1-, 2- and 5-year survival rates were 304 days (84-3155), 45%, 35% and 23% in all patients, respectively, 866 days (190-3155), 83%, 83% and 57% in the 13 patients whose tumors were resected, and 187 days (84--2630), 25%, 5% and 5% in the 24 patients whose tumors were not resected. Grade 3 toxicity, especially hematological reactions, was noted in 13.5% (5/37) of the patients. There was one toxicity-related death (sepsis). A good outcome may be obtained with CRT, followed by surgery when feasible. However, CRT can cause toxic reactions, and close monitoring of patients is required.

Abstract
To determine the possible role of eosinophils in Angiostrongylus costaricensis infection, both interleukin-5 (IL-5) transgenic (Tg) and non-transgenic (non-Tg) C3H/HeN mice were infected with A. costaricensis third-stage larvae. IL-5 Tg mice demonstrated greater resistance than non-Tg mice to A. costaricensis, as shown by lower adult worm recovery, smaller adults, fewer eggs in the intestinal wall and fewer larvae passed in the feces. Both mice showed similar antigen-specific IgA and IgGI antibody responses, although IgA was more prominent than IgG1. Egg deposition and inflammatory responses in the intestinal walls were milder in IL-5 Tg mice than in non-Tg mice. The eggs with developed larvae, deposited in the intestinal walls of IL-5 Tg mice, were surrounded by numerous degranulating eosinophils and sometimes with Splendore-Hoeppli deposits. The data suggest that eosinophils are involved in the resistance of the mouse during primary infection with A. costaricensis.

Abstract
Models for the maintenance of androdioecy have suggested that selfing of hermaphrodites decreases the frequency of males in a population (the "male frequency"). To test this hypothesis, we used electrophoretic allozyme methods to study the mating system and population genetics of an androdioecious tree, Fraxinus lanuginosa, which exhibits large variations in male frequency among subpopulations in central Hokkaido (northern Japan). We estimated the outcrossing rates by using seeds assayed at three polymorphic loci, and found that the multilocus outcrossing rate (t(m)) increased with increasing male frequency (q) (t(m) = 0.69 to 0.99, q = 0.11 to 0.59). Fixation indices (F(j)) estimated from these t(m) values ranged from 0.006 to 0.185, and were significantly greater than zero in plots with a low male frequency (q <or = 0.35), but not in plots with intermediate or high male frequencies (q > or = 0.47). However, fixation indices at the late life stage (F(a)) were not significantly different from zero at five loci (F(a) = 0.056 to 0.101, q = 0.11 to 0.61), and the F(a) values were lower than the F(j) values in several of the plots where both values were measured. These results indicate that inbreeding depression substantially decreases the proportion of selfed progeny in partially self-fertilising subpopulations. A theoretical model for the maintenance of androdioecy showed expected male frequencies significantly lower than the observed values in plots with high male frequency (q = 0.59 to 0.61), although the differences between the expected and observed values of male frequencies were not significant in plots with intermediate or low male-frequencies (q = 0.11 to 0.47). In this paper, the factors are discussed that affect variations in the male frequency among subpopulations of F. lanuginosa based on these findings.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to elucidate (1) the cardiovascular adaptations and response to hypoxic stimuli during short-term intermittent hypoxia and (2) whether the change in cardiovascular response to hypoxia is correlated to the change in hypoxic ventilatory chemosensitivity. Fourteen subjects were decompressed in a chamber to 432 torr, simulating an altitude of 4500 m, over a period of 30 min and were maintained at that pressure for 1 h daily for 7 days. Ventilatory (DeltaV(I)/DeltaSa(O2); Sa(O2) is arterial oxygen saturation), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (DeltaSBP/DeltaSa(O2) and DeltaDBP/DeltaSa(O2)), and heart rate (DeltaHR/DeltaSa(O2)) responses to progressive isocapnic hypoxia were measured before and after intermittent hypoxia. Resting ventilation, SBP, DBP, and HR did not change after intermittent hypoxia. DeltaSBP/DeltaSa(O2) and DeltaDBP/DeltaSa(O2) increased significantly after intermittent hypoxia accompanied by an enhanced DeltaV(I)/DeltaSa(C2), but there was no change in DeltaHR/DeltaSa(C2). There were significant correlations between the change in DeltaV(I)/DeltaSa(O2) and both the changes in DeltaSBP/DeltaSa(O2) and DeltaDBP/DeltaSa(O2) following intermittent hypoxic exposure. These results suggest that short-term intermittent hypoxia leads to the enhanced arterial BP response to hypoxic stimuli in humans, and that the enhanced peripheral chemosensitivity to hypoxia after intermittent hypoxia may play an important role in the increased arterial BP response.

Abstract
To evaluate the significance of immunohistochemical staining of ubiquitin (heat shock protein) in the midbrain for medico-legal investigation of death in fires, we examined forensic autopsy cases of fire fatalities (n = 35) in comparison with controls (n = 27; brain stem injury, acute myocardial infarction and carbon monoxide poisoning other than fire fatality). There were two intranuclear staining patterns in the nuclei of pigmented substantia nigra neurons: a type of inclusion (possible Marinesco bodies) and a diffuse staining. Percentage of nuclear ubiquitin positivity (Ub-positive %) in fire fatalities (2.7-44.7%; mean, 18.5%) was significantly higher than in brain stem injury (n = 9; 0-10.4%; mean, 4.5%) and myocardial infarction (n = 14; 1.5-14.6%; mean, 6.9%), independently of blood carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels. Age-dependent increase in Ub-positive % was observed in lower COHb (< 60%) cases. The intranuclear diffuse ubiquitin staining was not observed in cases of high blood cyanide level (> 1.0 microg/ml). These observations showed that intranuclear ubiquitin immunoreactivity of the pigmented substantia nigra neurons in the midbrain was induced by severe stress in fires.

Abstract
A methane fermentation system for treating swine wastes was developed and successfully demonstrated in a field test plant (0.5 m3/d). The system was composed of a screw-press dehydrator, a methanogenic digester, a sludge separator, an oxidation ditch (OD) and composting equipment. A performance evaluation was carried out regarding physical pre-treatment using the screw-press dehydrator, methane fermentation for pre-treated slurry, and post-treatment for digested effluent by OD. Total solids (TS) and chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) removal by the screw-press pre-treatment were 38% and 22%, respectively. Properties of the screenings were as follows: water content 57%, ignition loss 93%, specific gravity 0.33. The pretreated strong slurry was digested under mesophilic conditions. Digestion gas (biogas) production rate was 25 m3/m3-slurry (NTP) and methane content of the biogas was 67%. CODCr removal of 65% with methane fermentation treatment of the slurry operating at 35 degrees C was observed. No inhibition of methane fermentation reaction occurred at the NH4(+)-N concentration of 3,000 mg/l or less during methane fermentation by the system. Mass balance from the present pilot-scale study showed that 1 m3 of mixture of excrement and urine of swine waste (TS 90 kg/m3) was biologically converted to 25 m3/m3-slurry (NTP) of biogas (methane content 67%), 100 kg of compost (water content 40%, ignition loss 75%), and 0.80 m3 of treated water (SS 30-70 mg/l).

Abstract
This article reports an autopsy case of sudden death of an infant with an infrequent encephalopathy involving epileptic episodes. The infant was a 1-year and 10-month-old boy, who had a history of the first convulsive seizures in the third month after birth. The clinical diagnosis was described as 'an early infantile epileptic encephalopathy with suppression-bursts' (Ohtahara syndrome). On a winter day, he was collapsed following a high fever and was already dead on the arrival at a hospital. The body was small for the age and poorly nourished. The autopsy and postmortem magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) of formalin-fixed brain revealed advanced unsymmetric brain atrophy with cortical dysplasia, which were prominent in the left temporal and right occipital lobes, and sclerotic atrophy of the parahippocampal gyri, additionally showing a feature of the olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy. However, the cause of death was pathologically and microbiologically determined as bacterial bronchopneumonia following pulmonary infection of the influenza A virus. In sudden death cases of physically handicapped infants, the investigation of viral infection in consideration of an epidemiological survey is important even when the death can be pathomorphologically explained.

Abstract
A 31-year-old man was diagnosed with acute ascending aortic dissection and massive aortic regurgitation following acute type B dissection during drug treatment. Although the aortic arch was not dissected, we performed aortic replacement from the aortic root to the proximal portion of the descending aorta. The aim of the operation was the prevention of aortic arch dissection, and closure of initial entry of type B dissection.

Abstract
Recently a number of patients have received home enteral nutrition (HEN) as well as home parenteral nutrition (HPN) in Terumo's home healthcare network 'Home-Joint'. This study was undertaken to compare the patients who received HEN with those who received HPN. 1. HPN patients in 2000. Number: 1,789 (45% females), age: 0-101 (mean: 66 years old, 48% over 70 years old), diagnosis: cancer 54%, therapeutic periods: 0-916 days (mean: 80 days). 2. HEN patients in 2000. Number: 736 (40% females), age: 1-101 (mean: 50 years old, 33% over 70 years old), diagnosis: Crohn's disease 44%, therapeutic periods 0-1,618 days (mean: 183 days). 3. Adoption of HPN and HEN in home care agents. HPN only 66%, HEN only 24%, both HPN and HEN 10%. It suggested that following two issue take place against making choice of HPN or HEN in home nutrition care. 1) Adoption of both HPN and HEN in more clinics. 2) Establishment of the guidelines for systematic HPN/HEN choice.
