Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) axis and glucose intolerance in acromegaly during the early postoperative period. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study included 20 patients with acromegaly caused by GH-secreting pituitary adenoma who received transsphenoidal surgery in our hospital. Glucose tolerance was evaluated with oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) performed during pre- and early postoperative periods (9 [7-18] days after surgery). Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and insulinogenic index (IGI) were calculated, and correlation analyses were performed between these values and the GH-IGF-I axis. Patients were divided according to postoperative changes of the axis, and glucose tolerance was compared between the groups. RESULTS In preoperative OGTTs, nine patients had impaired glucose tolerance and two had diabetes mellitus patterns. Postoperatively, significant reduction was observed both in fasting plasma glucose levels (p<0.01) and in HOMA-IR (p<0.01), whereas IGI showed no significant change. HOMA-IR was significantly correlated with serum IGF-I levels both before (r=0.83, p<0.01) and after (r=0.57, p<0.01) surgery, although it was not correlated with serum GH levels. Patients who achieved more than 50% postoperative reduction in serum IGF-I levels showed significant improvement in OGTTs results (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS In patients with acromegaly, serum IGF-I levels, but not GH levels, were significantly correlated with insulin resistance. Early postoperative improvement of glucose tolerance is observed in patients who achieved postoperative reduction in serum IGF-I levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical application of the forced oscillation technique (FOT) has progressed with the spread of commercially available FOT devices. The correlation between respiratory impedance and spirometry has been reported; however, the association with airway inflammation and pulmonary function, in the lung periphery in particular, is unclear. OBJECTIVE To assess whether respiratory impedance is associated with peripheral airway inflammation and dysfunction in asthma. METHODS Subjects included 78 patients with overall controlled asthma. We measured whole-breath or within-breath respiratory system resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) using a commercially available multi-frequency FOT device (MostGraph-01), and assessed the correlation with the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), alveolar nitric oxide concentration (CANO), maximal NO flux in the conductive airways (J'awNO), and the N2 phase III slope of single breath N2 washout (delta N2 ). RESULTS The differences between inspiratory and expiratory phases of Xrs at 5 Hz (X5), resonant frequency (Fres), and a low-frequency reactance area (ALX) were significantly correlated with CANO; however, there was no correlation between respiratory impedance and FeNO or J'awNO. The delta N2 values were significantly correlated with whole-breath, inspiratory, and expiratory Rrs and Xrs, except for R20. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE We conclude that respiratory impedance reflects peripheral airway inflammation and ventilation inhomogeneity.

Abstract
SUMMARY Increased levels of serum undercarboxylated osteocalcin, which were associated with bone metabolism markers, correlated inversely with indices of glucose metabolism (plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1C, and glycated albumin) in hemodialysis patients with abnormalities of bone metabolism. INTRODUCTION Undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC), a possible marker of bone metabolism and one of the osteoblast-specific secreted proteins, has recently been reported to be associated with glucose metabolism. We tested the hypothesis that ucOC levels are associated with indices of glucose metabolism in chronic hemodialysis patients with abnormalities of bone metabolism. METHODS Serum ucOC, bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP, a bone formation marker), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b, a bone resorption marker) were measured in 189 maintenance hemodialysis patients (96 diabetics and 93 non-diabetics), and their relationships with glucose metabolism were examined. RESULTS ucOC correlated positively with BAP (ρ = 0.489, p < 0.0001), TRACP-5b (ρ = 0.585, p < 0.0001) and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH; ρ = 0.621, p < 0.0001). Serum ucOC levels in the diabetic patients were lower than those of non-diabetic patients (p < 0.001), although there were no significant differences in serum BAP or TRACP-5b between diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Serum ucOC correlated negatively with plasma glucose (ρ = -0.303, p < 0.0001), hemoglobin A1C (ρ = -0.214, p < 0.01), and glycated albumin (ρ = -0.271, p < 0.001), although serum BAP or TRACP-5b did not. In multiple linear regression analysis, log [plasma glucose], log [hemoglobin A1C], and log [glycated albumin] were associated significantly with log [ucOC] after adjustment for age, gender, hemodialysis duration, and body mass index but were not associated with log [BAP], log [TRACP-5b], or log [intact PTH]. CONCLUSION Increased levels of serum ucOC, which were associated with bone metabolism markers, were inversely associated with indices of glucose metabolism in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
The efficacy of two rhizobacteria (Sphingobium fuliginis TIK1 and Sphingobium sp. IT4) of Phragmites australis for the sustainable treatment of water polluted with phenolic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) was investigated. Strains TIK1 and IT4 have recently been isolated from Phragmites rhizosphere and shown to degrade various 4-alkylphenols-TIK1 via phenolic ring hydroxylation and meta-cleavage and IT4 via ipso-hydroxylation. The two strains also degraded bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol B, bisphenol E, bisphenol F, bisphenol P and bisphenol S (BPS). Thus, strains TIK1 and IT4 have wide degradation spectra for phenolic EDCs. The two strains utilized Phragmites root extracts as a sole carbon source and sustainably colonized Phragmites roots, where they degraded phenolic EDCs. In sequencing batch reactor experiments using Phragmites in association with TIK1 or IT4, both associations repeatedly removed phenolic EDCs from polluted secondary effluent water (BPA, BPS, 4-tert-butylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol) from polluted secondary effluent water. The results suggest that hydroponic systems using Phragmites-TIK and Phragmites-IT4 associations would be useful for sustainable treatment of polluted waters containing various phenolic EDCs.

Abstract
Background: Lung adenocarcinoma (LADCA) patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are in general associated with relatively high clinical response rate to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) but not all responded to TKI. It has therefore become important to identify the additional surrogate markers regarding EGFR-TKI sensitivity. Methods: We first examined the effects of EGFR-TKIs, gefitinib and erlotinib, upon cell proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. We then evaluated the gene profiles related to EGFR-TKI sensitivity using a microarray analysis. Results of microarray analysis led us to focus on carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM) family, CEACAM 3, 5, 6, 7, and 19, as potential further surrogate markers of EGFR-TKI sensitivity. We then examined the correlation between the status of CEACAM 3, 5, 6, 7, and 19 immunoreactivity in LADCA and clinicopathological parameters of individual cases. Results: In the cases with EGFR mutations, the status of all CEACAMs examined was significantly higher than that in EGFR wild-type patients, but there were no significant differences in the status of CEACAMs between TKI responder and nonresponder among 22 patients who received gefitinib therapy. However, among 115 EGFR mutation-negative LADCA patients, both CEACAM6 and CEACAM3 were significantly associated with adverse clinical outcome (CEACAM6) and better clinical outcome (CEACAM3). Conclusion: CEACAMs examined in this study could be related to the presence of EGFR mutation in adenocarcinoma cells but not represent the effective surrogate marker of EGFR-TKI in LADCA patients. However, immunohistochemical evaluation of CEACAM3/6 in LADCA patients could provide important information on their clinical outcome.

Abstract
Metastatic potential of prostate cancer is thought to correlate with the degradation of basement membrane components by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The MMP-7 (matrilysin) gene is overexpressed in prostate cancer as well as colorectum and brain cancer. In order to clarify the relation of MMP-7 to clinical stages of prostate cancer, recombinant human MMP-7 was produced to prepare antibodies for immunohistochemistry and immunoassay. Preproform of human MMP-7 was produced in Escherichia coli as inclusion bodies that could be solubilized and refolded to yield an activatable proenzyme. PreproMMP-7 (Mr 31,000) solubilized from inclusion bodies was converted to proMMP-7 (Mr 30,000) during the refolding steps. The refolded proMMP-7 was purified to about 80% homogeneity as MMP-7 by sequential ion-exchange and molecular-sieve chromatography. The active, mature form of MMP-7 (Mr 20,000) could be produced from proforms of MMP-7 by treatment with p-aminophenylmercuric acetate. Activated MMP-7 was shown to have proteolytic activity to fibronectin, casein, and diazotized, denatured collagen (Azocoll). Specific activity, as assayed with the denatured collagen as substrate, was measured to be about 3,100 units/mg protein of mature enzyme. Using recombinant proMMP-7 as antigen, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies were prepared. A sandwich ELISA was developed using monoclonal antibody as the capture antibody and rabbit anti-proMMP-7 polyclonal IgG conjugated with biotin as the detection antibody; MMP-7 at 10 ng/ml was significantly detectable. The assay system is applicable on the measurement of MMP-7 levels in the clinical and pathologic specimens including serum from patients with different stages in malignancy of prostate cancer. These antibodies are useful for the retrospective analyses of prostate cancer on the basis of immunohistochemical evaluation.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Hyperlipidaemia is an independent risk factor for the progression of diabetic nephropathy, but its molecular mechanism remains elusive. We investigated in mice how diabetes and hyperlipidaemia cause renal lesions separately and in combination, and the involvement of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in the process. METHODS Diabetes was induced in wild-type (WT) and Tlr4 knockout (KO) mice by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ). At 2 weeks after STZ injection, normal diet was substituted with a high-fat diet (HFD). Functional and histological analyses were carried out 6 weeks later. RESULTS Compared with treatment with STZ or HFD alone, treatment of WT mice with both STZ and HFD markedly aggravated nephropathy, as indicated by an increase in albuminuria, mesangial expansion, infiltration of macrophages and upregulation of pro-inflammatory and extracellular-matrix-associated gene expression in glomeruli. In Tlr4 KO mice, the addition of an HFD to STZ had almost no effects on the variables measured. Production of protein S100 calcium binding protein A8 (calgranulin A; S100A8), a potent ligand for TLR4, was observed in abundance in macrophages infiltrating STZ-HFD WT glomeruli and in glomeruli of diabetic nephropathy patients. High-glucose and fatty acid treatment synergistically upregulated S100a8 gene expression in macrophages from WT mice, but not from KO mice. As putative downstream targets of TLR4, phosphorylation of interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) was enhanced in kidneys of WT mice co-treated with STZ and HFD. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Activation of S100A8/TLR4 signalling was elucidated in an animal model of diabetic glomerular injury accompanied with hyperlipidaemia, which may provide novel therapeutic targets in progressive diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Electrocardiographic gating, commonly used in MR carotid plaque imaging, can negatively affect intraplaque contrast if the TR is inappropriate. The present study aimed to determine whether a non-gated technique with appropriate TRs can accurately evaluate intraplaque characteristics in specimens excised by CEA. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively examined 40 consecutive patients who underwent CEA (59-82 years of age) by using a 1.5T scanner. Axial T1WI with a TR of 500 ms and PDWI and T2WI with a TR of 3000 ms with a self-navigated rotating-blade scan instead of cardiac gating were obtained. Signal intensities of the plaque and adjacent muscle were measured, and the CR on T1WI, PDWI, and T2WI as well as the gray-scale median on US were correlated with the pathologic findings of the CEA specimens. RESULTS On T1WI, the CRs of the carotid plaques differed significantly among groups in which the main components were histologically confirmed as fibrous tissue, lipid/necrosis, and hemorrhage (0.54-1.17, 1.16-1.53, and 1.40-2.29, respectively). The sensitivity and specificity for discriminating lipid/necrosis/hemorrhage from fibrous tissue were 96% and 100%, respectively. On T2WI, the CRs of plaques with lipid/necrosis were significantly higher than those of other groups, but the CRs on PDWI and the gray-scale median on US were not significantly different among the groups. CONCLUSIONS Non-gated MR plaque imaging, particularly T1WI, can readily predict the intraplaque main components of the carotid artery with high sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
The musculoskeletal system of the aardvark (Orycteropus afer) tail was morphologically examined in two adult specimens. The tail musculature comprised three muscular groups, viz. a dorsal sacrocaudal system that consisted of the irregularly oriented Musculus sacrocaudalis dorsalis medialis and M. sacrocaudalis dorsalis lateralis, a lateral inter-vertebral connecting system, and a ventral sacrocaudal system characterized by the thick M. sacrocaudalis ventralis lateralis and M. sacrocaudalis ventralis medialis. Both the dorsal and ventral systems possessed large tendon groups that strengthened the tail structure. Computed tomography (CT) examination showed the presence of large but homogeneous cartilaginous inter-vertebral discs, whereas V-shaped bones were situated at the ventral aspect of the caudal vertebrae at the level of the inter-vertebral discs. CT visualization of the tendons and V-shaped bones in various tail positions suggested that these structures contribute to the tunnel digging action by bearing the trunk weight and lending force when the aardvark are displacing the soil by means of the forelimbs.

Abstract
AIMS It has been recognized that blood pressure shows a seasonal variation, but it remains unknown whether diabetic nephropathy shows a seasonal variation. In the present study, we investigated the change in urinary albumin/creatinine ratio in relation to the season in Japanese patients with Type 2 diabetes. METHODS A total of 430 subjects (275 male, 155 female) with Type 2 diabetes and early nephropathy (defined by UACR 30-300 mg/g creatinine) were included. One year was divided into four seasons and each season was defined as winter (December-February), spring (March-May), summer (June-August), and fall (September-November), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum creatinine levels, and the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio were examined. The estimated glomerular filtration rate was also calculated and evaluated. RESULTS The mean age (± SE) was 64.8 ± 0.8 years. The mean systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in winter than in summer (136 ± 0.68 vs. 133 ± 0.68 mmHg, P < 0.001). The urinary albumin/creatinine ratio showed a significantly higher value in winter than in summer (72.8 ± 4.4 vs. 54.6 ± 3.4 mg/g creatinine, P < 0.001). The curve of seasonal variation of this ratio showed a similar change to that of systolic blood pressure. No significant seasonal variation was observed in estimated glomerular filtration rate and diastolic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that there is a hitherto unknown seasonal variation in the urinary albumin/creatinine ratio, and that it may be necessary to consider this seasonal change, especially when performing an intervention study of nephropathy.

Abstract
The inhibitor of differentiation Id2 is expressed in mesoderm of the second heart field, which contributes myocardial and mesenchymal cells to the primary heart tube. The role of Id2 in cardiac development is insufficiently known. Heart development was studied in sequential developmental stages in Id2 wildtype and knockout mouse embryos. Expression patterns of Id2, MLC-2a, Nkx2.5, HCN4, and WT-1 were analyzed. Id2 is expressed in myocardial progenitor cells at the inflow and outflow tract, in the endocardial and epicardial lineage, and in neural crest cells. Id2 knockout embryos show severe cardiac defects including abnormal orientation of systemic and pulmonary drainage, abnormal myocardialization of systemic and pulmonary veins, hypoplasia of the sinoatrial node, large interatrial communications, ventricular septal defects, double outlet right ventricle, and myocardial hypoplasia. Our results indicate a role for Id2 in the second heart field contribution at both the arterial and the venous poles of the heart.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Adiponectin is a cytokine constitutively produced by adipocytes and exhibits multiple biological functions by targeting various cell types. However, the effects of adiponectin on primary gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells are still unexplored. Therefore, we investigated the effects of adiponectin on gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells. MATERIAL AND METHODS The expression of adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs), mouse gingival fibroblasts (MGFs) and human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cells was examined using RT-PCR and western blotting. HGFs and MGFs were stimulated with interleukin (IL)-1β in the presence or absence of adiponectin, and the expression of IL-6 and IL-8 at both mRNA and protein levels was measured by real-time PCR and ELISA, respectively. Furthermore, small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in MGFs were used to knock down the expression of mouse AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. The effects of adiponectin on the expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) genes were evaluated by real-time PCR. Mineralized nodule formation of adiponectin-treated HPDL cells was revealed by Alizarin Red staining. RESULTS AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 were expressed constitutively in HGFs, MGFs and HPDL cells. Adiponectin decreased the expression of IL-6 and IL-8 in IL-1β-stimulated HGFs and MGFs. AdipoR1 siRNA in MGFs revealed that the effect of adiponectin on reduction of IL-6 expression was potentially mediated via AdipoR1. Adiponectin-treated HPDL cells promoted the expression of ALP and Runx2 mRNAs and up-regulated ALP activity. Furthermore, adiponectin enhanced mineralized nodule formation of HPDL cells. CONCLUSION Our observations demonstrate that adiponectin exerts anti-inflammatory effects on HGFs and MGFs, and promotes the activities of osteoblastogenesis of HPDL cells. We conclude that adiponectin has potent beneficial functions to maintain the homeostasis of periodontal health, improve periodontal lesions, and contribute to wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Individualized surgical simulation using three-dimensional (3D) imaging to allow safe performance of clipping surgery for unruptured middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm via pterional keyhole mini-craniotomy was performed in 100 consecutive patients. METHODS 3D images were reconstructed of the skin, skull, cerebral arteries and veins, and aneurysm. The size, shape, and location of the scheduled keyhole and the patient's head position were individually optimized using this preoperative simulation system. The site of opening of the sylvian fissure was also preoperatively determined according to the spatial relationships between the aneurysm and sylvian veins. 110 pterional keyhole clipping surgeries were consecutively performed in 100 patients. RESULTS The mean diameter of the pterional keyhole was 25±2 mm. Magnetic resonance imaging detected lacunar infarction in 4 cases (3.6%) but no other abnormalities. 1 patient suffered a reversible ischemic neurological deficit and 1 patient (79 years old) showed mild dementia. The modified Rankin scale at 3 months after the operation was grade 0 in all cases except 1 patient with mild dementia (grade 1). Mini-mental state examination, Hamilton rating scale for depression, and Beck depression inventory were all significantly improved (p<0.01) after the operations. CONCLUSION Pterional keyhole clipping surgery based on careful surgical simulation with 3D images is a safe and less invasive means to treat relatively small unruptured MCA aneurysms.

Abstract
We investigated the use of Novosphingobium sp. strain TYA-1 for the simultaneous removal of bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-alkylphenols (4-APs) from complex polluted waters. Strain TYA-1 degraded BPA and utilized it as a sole carbon and energy source via oxidative skeletal rearrangement involving the cytochrome p450 monooxygenase system. Strain TYA-1 also degraded 4-APs with branched side alkyl chains (4-tert-butylphenol [4-tert-BP], 4-sec-butylphenol, 4-tert-pentylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol [4-tert-OP], and branched nonylphenol mixture) via 4-alkylcatechols but could not degrade 4-APs with linear side alkyl chains. Degradation of 4-APs, like that of BPA, involved the cytochrome p450 monooxygenase system in strain TYA-1. A sequencing batch bioreactor (100 mL of polluted water [50 mg/L BPA, 50 mg/L 4-tert-BP, and 5 mg/L 4-tert-OP]; 6 h of reaction time/cycle; 12 cycles in total) containing alginate-immobilized TYA-1 cells (15 mg dry cells) simultaneously removed BPA, 4-tert-BP, and 4-tert-OP from complex polluted waters. These immobilized TYA-1 cells could be reused for a total of 9 cycles without any loss of degradation activity. Our results support the potential of using immobilized TYA-1 cells for the simultaneous removal of BPA and 4-APs from complex polluted waters.

Abstract
Since the neuroradiological features of patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome are not well-understood, examinations using functional imaging were performed in this study. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were performed using a clinical 3-Tesla MR imager in 4 patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (2 boys and 2 girls; aged 2-6 years.) and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. Furthermore, interictal 123I-iomazenil (IMZ) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was examined in 2 of the 4 patients. Among the 4 patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, 2 patients showed polymicrogyria and 1 patient showed agyria. Those patients with brain malformations also showed abnormal brain artery patterns and decreased accumulation of IMZ in 123I-IMZ SPECT. Although all 4 patients showed epileptic discharges in their electroencephalograms (EEG), one patient with polymicrogyria had no seizure episodes. Decreases in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) corresponding to the areas of polymicrogyria and/or epileptic discharges in EEG were shown in all patients except for the patient with agyria. Although consistent evidence was not seen in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome in this study, brain malformations and disturbances of the GABAergic nervous system would be underlying mechanisms of the neurodevelopmental abnormalities in this syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to correlate the MRI appearance and pathological findings in each grade of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the parotid gland. METHODS We reviewed surgically proven MECs of parotid glands in 20 patients. Pathologically, 5 tumours were high-grade, 3 were intermediate and 12 were low-grade. MR images were evaluated with emphasis on signal intensities on T(2) weighted images, margin characteristics and lymph node metastasis, correlating these with pathological features. RESULTS Among the high-grade MECs, four out of five tumours showed inhomogeneous low to intermediate signal intensity on T(2) weighted images, reflecting high cellularity. All tumours had an ill-defined margin, reflecting invasive tumour growth. Among the intermediate-grade MECs, all three tumours showed intermediate signal intensity on T(2) weighted images and two tumours had an ill-defined margin. Among the low-grade MECs, 11 of the 12 tumours had a hyperintense area on T(2) weighted images because of the existence of abundant mucin secreting cells. Seven tumours had an ill-defined margin, reflecting peritumoural inflammatory changes rather than invasive tumour growth. Lymph node metastasis was seen in three high-grade MECs. CONCLUSION MECs of the parotid gland show variable MRI findings reflecting their histological nature, which seems to have certain tendencies depending on the tumour grade.

Abstract
Anterior skull base defects after extended anterior skull base resection including unilateral orbit and the dura were reconstructed using the temporal musculopericranial (TMP) flaps or frontal musculopericranial (FMP) flap in 14 patients. Dural defect was reconstructed with the TMP or FMP flap by making it overlap on the remaining dura around the defects. These flaps were also used, in principle, for the separation of the nasal cavity. For bone defects on the anterior skull base, a bone graft was transplanted in the place between the flap for dural reconstruction and the flap for the separation of the nasal cavity. Bone grafting was nor performed in patients who had an extensive defect and for whom a free flap was used for the separation. After surgery, CSF rhinorrhea did not occur in the 14 patients. Twelve patients did not develop any postoperative complications. Two patients had epidural abscess, but with debridement and the drainage to the nasal cavity, they did not develop severe intracranial complications. We conclude that reconstruction using musculopericranial flaps is a reliable and versatile method with minimum invasion and the shortest operation hours. In particular, musculopericranial flap for dura reconstruction was highly efficacious for the prevention of CSF rhinorrhea.

Abstract
Bisphosphonates (BPs) are the most widely used and effective treatment for osteoporosis and Paget's disease. Non-nitrogen containing BPs (non-N-BPs), namely etidronate, clodronate, tiludronate, as well as nitrogen-containing BPs (N-BPs), namely pamidronate, alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate, zoledronate and minodronate have been launched on the market to date. N-BPs act by inhibiting the enzyme farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase (FPPS), and several crystal structures of complexes between FPPS and N-BPs have been revealed. Understanding the physical basis of the binding between protein and small molecules is an important goal in both medicinal chemistry and structural biology. In this review, we analyze in detail the energetic basis of molecular recognition between FPPS and N-BPs. First, we summarize the interactions between ligands and proteins observed in N-BPs-FPPS complexes in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Second, we present an interaction energy analysis on the basis of full quantum mechanical calculation of FPPS and N-BP complexes using the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method. The FMO result revealed that not only hydrogen bond and electrostatic interaction but also CH-O and π-π interaction with FPPS are important for N-BP’s potency. Third, we describe a binding site analysis of FPPS on the basis of the inhomogeneous solvation theory which, by clustering the results from an explicit solvent molecular dynamics simulation (MD), is capable of describing the entropic and enthalpic contributions to the free energies of individual hydration sites. Finally, we also discuss the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the series of minodronate derivatives.

Abstract
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using a drug-eluting stent (DES) leads to less re-stenosis than PCI using a bare metal stent (BMS), however there is still controversy whether use of a DES for severe coronary disease leads to an acceptable outcome in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study 8159 lesions were treated in 6739 patients (mean age 68.9 years) with coronary artery disease. Use of a DES significantly decreased the re-stenosis rate compared with BMS in both DM (9.6% versus 21.3%) and non-DM (9.5% versus 17.1%) patients. The re-stenosis rate was significantly higher in DM than in non-DM patients in the BMS group but not in the DES group. There was no statistically significant difference in event-free survival after stenting of patients with left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease between the BMS and DES groups. It was concluded that, compared with BMS, DES reduced re-stenosis in patients with DM, however, we advise careful treatment after using DES for severe coronary disease, including LMCA lesions, in patients with DM.

Abstract
AbstractHard X-ray microprobes from synchrotron radiation ( SR ) sources should be powerful tools for various fields of research. A Fresnel zone plate ( FZP ) is a promising focusing element for X-ray. In order to develop high performance multilayer FZP for use in hard X-ray region, Ag/C and Cu/Al concentric multilayers were prepared by some deposition parameters. A dependence of the zone boundary structures on the Ar gas pressure was observed: the multilayer prepared at lower Ar gas pressure had smoother zones. Substrate cooling did not improve the zone boundary structures. From the focusing test of the Cu/Al FZP by the SR, a microbeam of 1.3 μ m ø has been obtained for 8 KeV X-ray (λ =0.154nm).

Abstract
At present there is no ‘ideal’ thin-film transistor technology for demanding display applications, such as organic light-emitting diode displays, that allows combining the low-temperature, solution-processability offered by organic semiconductors with the high level of performance achievable with microcrystalline silicon1. N-type amorphous mixed metal oxide semiconductors, such as ternary oxides Mx1My2Oz, where M1 and M2 are metals such as In, Ga, Sn, or Zn, have recently gained momentum because of their high carrier mobility and stability2, 3 and good optical transparency, but they are mostly deposited by sputtering. So far no route is available for forming high-performance mixed oxide materials from solution at low process temperatures <250 °C. Ionic mixed metal oxides should in principle be ideal candidates for solution-processable materials because the conduction band states derived from metal s-orbitals are relatively insensitive to the presence of structural disorder and high charge carrier mobilities are achievable in amorphous structures2. Here we report the formation of amorphous metal oxide semiconducting thin-films using a ‘sol–gel on chip’ hydrolysis approach from soluble metal alkoxide precursors, which affords unprecedented high field-effect mobilities of 10 cm2 V−1 s−1, reproducible and stable turn-on voltages Von≈0 V and high operational stability at maximum process temperatures as low as 230 °C.
