Abstract
To test how iodine and both iodine and selenium supplementation affected the thyroid status as well as growth and survival in Senegalese sole, larvae were reared in a recirculation system from 15 to 34 DAH. Sets of three tanks were assigned to each of the following three diets: control (C), iodine (I) and iodine and selenium (I + Se). Samples were collected at 15, 27 and 34 DAH to determine dry weight, iodine and selenium levels, GPx and ORD activities, thyroid hormone levels and thyroid follicles histology. At 34 DAH, fish from the control (C) treatment suffered from hyperplasia of the thyroid follicles (goitre), whereas iodine-treated larvae did not (I and I + Se). Lower survival rates in the C groups were probably a consequence of the hyperplasia. Moreover, there was an improvement in thyroid hormone status in I- and I + Se-treated larvae, showing that further supplementation of live feed with iodine can be crucial for fish at early life stages, as it seems to sustain normal larval development, when reared in a recirculation system. Selenium did not affect the results. Together with previous results, this indicates selenium supplement is more important at younger life stages.

Abstract
The Water Framework Directive establishes that the river basin management plans must have a summary of the pressures and impacts of human activities, such as agriculture, on the chemical and quantitative status of groundwater bodies. In order to identify those areas where a potential impact from agricultural activities on groundwater bodies exists, but currently lacking groundwater monitoring data, a methodology was developed that combines the use of gross nitrogen balance values with the results of a specific vulnerability assessment index. A farm management efficiency parameter is added, to identify the factors that contribute to nitrogen use efficiency and to assess the near-future scenarios. This methodology allows the identification of significant pressures that may be responsible for a groundwater body failing good status where there is no representative monitoring network.

Abstract
Major issues regarding the efficiency of moni toring programs for nitrate contaminated groundwater are analyzed in this paper: (i) representativeness of monitoring networks; (ii) correct interpretation of the monitoring data and resulting time series and trends; and (iii) differentiation among the different sources of nitrates in groundwater. Following an overview of the nitrate contamination problem and possible solutions, as well as some of the difficulties found, a relatively straightforward method for assessing monitoring network representativity is presented, namely interpolation standard error assessment. It is shown how nitrate-concentration time series resulting from periodic observations can be corrected with a conservative tracer, in order to avoid misinterpretation and confirm or correct apparent trends. Finally, coupled ¹⁵N and ¹⁸O isotope signatures of nitrate (NO₃⁻) in groundwater are used to differentiate among nitrogen (N) sources, to ensure correct targeting of restoration measures. The case study regards a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone in the south of Portugal, designated in compliance with the European Nitrates Directive, where coastal discharge of nutrient-rich groundwater threatens the good qualitative and ecological status of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon. Results show that mineral fertilizer is the main source of N in groundwater, and that increases in N load can be masked by dilution phenomena.

Abstract
We created a database in order to quantitatively assess the occurrence and removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). From 117 scientific publications, we compiled 6641 data covering 184 PPCPs. Data included the concentrations of PPCPs in WWTP influents and effluents, their removal efficiency and their loads to the aquatic environment. The first outputs of our database allowed to identify the most investigated PPCPs in WWTPs and the most persistent ones, and to obtain reliable and quantitative values on their concentrations, frequency of detection and removal efficiency in WWTPs. We were also able to compare various processes and pointed out activated sludge with nitrogen treatment and membrane bioreactor as the most efficient ones.

Abstract
We created a database in order to quantitatively assess the occurrence and removal efficiency of PPCPs in WWTPs. From 113 scientific publications, we compiled 5887 data on the concentrations and loads of PPCPs in WWTP influents and effluents, and on their removal efficiency. The first outputs of our database include: (1) a list of the most frequently studied molecules, their frequency of detection, their mean concentration and removal in liquid influent and effluent; (2) a comparison of the removal efficiency for different WWTP processes; (3) a study of the influence of the operating conditions (sludge and hydraulic retention times).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanisms underlying food choices are complex and involve neuroendocrine and biochemical signaling. Among neuroendocrine signals, leptin may play a prominent role in food preference. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to obtain an understanding of the effects of leptin replacement on macro- and micronutrient preferences in leptin-deficient adults. DESIGN We studied the effects of leptin replacement on three adults with genetic leptin deficiency during the initial 12 months of treatment. Dietary intake was measured in our study by weighed food consumption records. Nutrient intake was calculated using a nutrition analysis software. RESULTS After leptin replacement was started, all patients had initially a marked reduction in food intake. The reduction in caloric intake differentially affected intake of macro- and micronutrients. There was an initial shift toward a higher percentage consumption of fats and a decrease in the intake of carbohydrates. Significant differences also occurred in 7 distinct types of macronutrients, 12 vitamins, 11 minerals and 1 amino acid. CONCLUSIONS We documented several specific leptin-induced changes in macro- and micronutrients intake during the course of leptin-replacement treatment, the majority of which were not related to the decrease in total caloric consumption.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare a new intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation technique (scleral incision) with the scleral flap surgical technique as regards to efficacy, surgical complications, advantages, disadvantages, and surgery costs in cases with no capsular support. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a retrospective study conducted on thirty patients (30 eyes), ten of whom were aphakic, eleven had traumatic cataract, seven had post-phacoemulsification complications, and two had lens luxation. The patients were divided into two groups (I - scleral incision technique and II - scleral flap technique) of fifteen patients each, during a study period lasting eighteen months. The great majority of the procedures were performed under general anesthesia and by the same surgeon. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS. The numerical variables were compared using the t test and the categorical ones using the Fisher exact test. We performed multifactorial analysis to build a model that could predict and compare the complications associated with each technique. An explicative model was built using logistic regression. RESULTS We observed a threefold higher rate of complications associated with the scleral flap technique when compared to the scleral incision technique. This difference was particularly relevant as regards the occurrence of free scleral flap and hyphema. No statistically significant differences were observed regarding vitreous hemorrhage, choroidal hemorrhage, retinal detachment, difficulty in the external pulling of the Prolene suture, breaking of the Prolene suture, and anterior chamber collapse. We found a significant association between intraoperative complications and the technique used (higher number of complications with the scleral flap) and also with some systemic diseases (patients with hypertension had more intraoperative complications). The number of late complications resulting from the scleral flap technique was much higher than those observed with the scleral incision technique; however, the number of the cases we studied is insufficient to reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION The duration of the procedure using the IOL scleral incision technique is significantly lower than using the scleral flap technique. Intraoperative complications were significantly associated with the technique used: more frequent with scleral flap. Late complications were mainly associated with systemic and previous ocular diseases.
