Abstract
This article examines the development of Gilligan's care ethic and its correlates in mature adults. Two studies showed that women scored significantly higher on the Ethic of Care Interview (ECI) than did men. More women than men generated interpersonal real-life dilemmas, and more men than women generated impersonal ones. In Study 2, longitudinal data indicated that care levels were moderately stable in mid- to late adulthood. The ECI was negatively related to authoritarianism and positively related to justice levels, role taking, and cognitive complexity. People scoring higher in care also felt more positively about their physical health and experience of aging. These results support the construct validity of the ECI and point to its potential role in adults' personal adaptation.

Abstract
A quantitative liver test based on the formation of the lidocaine metabolite monoethylglycinexylidide (MEGX), was used to evaluate the effect of hemorrhagic shock at 40 mmHg for 90 min on Sprague-Dawley rats. After 2 h of stabilization, lidocaine was injected (2 mg/kg). A second group received volume resuscitation with Ringer's lactate over 1 h (15 mL/kg) after shock, and after 1 h of stabilization lidocaine was administered. These groups were compared to control animals. Blood samples were drawn at 0 time (baseline), prior to lidocaine injection, and at 10, 15, 30, and 60 min after lidocaine injection. MEGX values in shocked animals were significantly lower than in the control group; in animals receiving volume resuscitation, levels were higher than the shocked animals without resuscitation, but did not reach control levels. Thus, shock produced a significant depression of hepatocyte function, which was partially reversed by Ringer's lactate resuscitation. The MEGX test appears to be a suitable tool for clinical evaluation and therapeutic intervention after shock.

Abstract
Patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) often have seasonal patterns of mood and appetite that compare with patterns seen in seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Seasonal patterns in other eating disorder (ED) subgroups have not been adequately described. We report on seasonal patterns in mood, weight, appetite, sleep, social activity, and energy in 154 consecutive admissions to an outpatient ED program: 60 patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 31 with BN, 34 with a history of both AN and BN (AN/BN), and 29 with an ED not otherwise specified (ED-NOS). AN patients had significantly less seasonal variation overall than either bulimic subgroup, as measured by the global seasonality score (GSS) on the Seasonal Patterns Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). AN patients also showed less seasonal change in mood, weight, and energy than BN patients, and less variation in mood and appetite than AN/BN patients.

Abstract
Distraction osteogenesis as per Ilizarov was used to lengthen the canine mandible. In this study, physiological and ultrastructural examination of the inferior nerve was performed. Mandibular body corticotomies were performed, and the mandible was distracted 7 mm. The animals were killed 4 weeks after the distraction was completed. Bone formed within the distraction gap in all dogs. There was no statistically significant difference in the jaw-jerk voltage between control and experimental sides. There was a significant difference between the distracted and control nerves in only one area of one nerve.

Abstract
Immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy can be performed safely with a low incidence of complications. There is no evidence that reconstruction with a submuscular implant interferes with subsequent oncologic care, followup, or outcome for patients.

Abstract
The beds, carpets and furnishings in 15 houses were sprayed with a solution containing tannic acid and an acaricide in an attempt to reduce allergen concentrations. Dust was collected from these sites for 4 weeks following spraying and the mite allergen Der p I concentration was measured and compared with baseline concentrations. In a subgroup of houses, counts of live mites and estimates of aeroallergen were also made. Four untreated houses were monitored over the same period. In dust samples collected 3 days after spraying, the mean concentrations of Der p I in beds, carpets and furniture were 23%, 28% and 26% of the pretreatment levels. All these reductions were significant compared to untreated controls. Samples collected 4 weeks after treatment were not significantly different to baseline for each group. After the initial reduction, the rate of increase in allergen concentration was significantly greater in the spray-only beds than in the beds which had been both sprayed and fitted with occlusive covers. Both aeroallergen and live mites continued to be detected in houses after treatment with the spray. These studies suggest that such sprays are only temporarily effective when applied at the manufacturer's recommended volumes and additional approaches are required to control the bulk of allergens in houses.
