Abstract
Four new steroidal saponins (1-4) were isolated from the stem and bark of two species of Dracaena: deistelianosides A and B (1 and 2) from D. deisteliana and arboreasaponins A and B (3 and 4) from D. arborea. Six known saponins and one known sapogenin were also isolated. The structures of 1-4 were established as diosgenin 3-O-[3-O-sulfate-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (1), 1-O-beta-d-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-d-fucopyranosyl(23S,24S)-spirosta-5,25(27)-diene-1beta,3beta,23alpha,24alpha-tetrol 24-O-alpha-l-arabinopyranoside (2), pennogenin-3-O-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-[6-O-acetyl]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (3), and 24alpha-hydroxypennogenin 3-O-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (4) using extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses and mass spectrometry. Cytotoxic activity of several of these compounds was evaluated against the HT-29 and HCT 116 human colon cancer cell lines.

They were elucidated as 3 beta- O-{4- O-[3-hydroxyl-3-methylglutaryl]- beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)- beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[ beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]- alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl}-16 alpha-hydroxy-13 beta,28-epoxy-oleanan-30-al ( 1) and 3 beta- O-{4- O-[3-hydroxyl-3-methylglutaryl]- beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-[ beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)]- beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[ beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]- alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl}-16 alpha-hydroxy-20,30-lactone-olean-12-ene ( 2). Their structures were characterized mainly by a combination of 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques ( (1)H- (1)H COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC) and mass spectroscopy. Saponins 1, 3, and 4 showed a weak cytotoxic activity when tested against HT-29 and HCT 116 tumor colon cancer cells.

Abstract
From the roots of three species of Acanthophyllum (Caryophyllaceae), two new gypsogenic acid glycosides, 1 and 2, were isolated, 1 from A. sordidum and A. lilacinum, 2 from A. elatius and A. lilacinum, together with three known saponins, glandulosides B and C, and SAPO50. The structures of 1 and 2 were established mainly by 2D NMR techniques as 23-O-beta-D-galactopyranosylgypsogenic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-galactopyranoside (1) and gypsogenic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-galactopyranoside (2). The cytotoxicity of several of these saponins was evaluated against two human colon cancer cell lines (HT-29 and HCT 116).

Abstract
Six new spirostane-type saponins (1-6), named orchidastrosides A-F, and chloromaloside D were isolated from an ethanol extract of the roots of Chlorophytum orchidastrum. The saponins have neotigogenin or neogitogenin as the aglycon and oligosaccharidic chains possessing seven to nine sugar units. Their structures were elucidated mainly by 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC) and FABMS and HRESIMS. Compounds 1-6 were tested for cytotoxicity against two human colon cancer cell lines, HCT 116 and HT-29.

Abstract
Two new oleanane-type saponins, coriariosides A (1) and B (2), along with a known saponin, gummiferaoside C (3), were isolated from the roots of Albizia coriaria. Their structures were established by extensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR experiments (COSY, ROESY, TOCSY, HSQC, and HMBC) and mass spectrometry. Compounds 1 and 3 when tested for cytotoxicity against two colorectal human cancer cells showed activity against the HCT 116 (IC50 4.2 microM for 1 and 2.7 microM for 3) and HT-29 (IC50 6.7 microM for 1 and 7.9 microM for 3) cell lines.

Abstract
Bioassay-guided fractionation of the CHCl (3)-soluble extract of the stem bark of Crassocephalum biafrae (Asteraceae) resulted in the isolation of three new dihydroisocoumarins, named biafraecoumarins A ( 1), B ( 2), and C ( 3); two known triterpenes ( 4 and 5); and a known ceramide ( 6). The structures of the new compounds were established as 7-but-15-enyl-6,8-dihydroxy-3( R)-penta-9,11-dienylisochroman-1-one ( 1), 7-butyl-6,8-dihydroxy-3( R)-penta-9,11-dienylisochroman-1-one ( 2), and 7-butyl-6,8-dihydroxy-3( R)-pent-10-enylisochroman-1-one ( 3) using spectroscopic data. Compounds 1- 3 exhibit low to significant antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas picketti, Trichphyton longifusus, Aspergillus flavus, Microsporum canis, Fusarium solani, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata.

Abstract
Two amides, heitziamide A and heitziamide B and two phenylethanoids, heitziethanoid A and heitziethanoid B together with thirteen known compounds were isolated from F. heitzii (Letouzey). The structures of all compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis. Nine compounds were evaluated for oxidative burst inhibitory activity in a chemoluminescence assay and for cytotoxicity against PC-3 prostate cancer cells. All compounds exhibited a clear suppressive effect on phagocytosis response upon activation with serum opsonized zymosan at the range of IC(50)=2.0-6.5 microM, but no cytotoxic effect was observed (IC(50)>100 microM).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible antioxidant effect of an aqueous extract of Ajuga iva (Ai) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Twelve diabetic rats were divided into two groups fed a casein diet supplemented or not with Ai (0.5%), for 4 weeks. In vitro, the Ai extract possessed a very high antioxidant effect (1 mg/ml was similar to those of trolox 300 mmol/l). The results indicated that plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values were reduced by 41% in Ai-treated compared with untreated diabetic rats. TBARS concentrations were lower 1.5-fold in liver, 1.8-fold in heart, 1.9-fold in muscle and 2.1-fold in brain in Ai-treated than untreated group. In erythrocytes, Ai treatment increased significantly the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (+25%) and glutathione reductase (GSSH-Red) (+22%). Superoxide dismutase activity was increased in muscle (+22%), while GSH-Px activity was significantly higher in liver (+28%), heart (+40%) and kidney (+45%) in Ai-treated compared with untreated group. Liver and muscle GSSH-Red activity was, respectively, 1.6- and 1.5-fold higher in Ai-treated than untreated diabetic group. Catalase activity was significantly increased in heart (+36%) and brain (+32%) in Ai-treated than untreated group. Ai treatment decreased plasma nitric oxide (-33%), carbonyls (-44%) and carotenoids (-68%) concentrations. In conclusion, this study indicates that Ajuga iva aqueous extract improves the antioxidant status by reducing lipid peroxidation and enhancing the antioxidant enzymes activities in plasma, erythrocytes and tissues of diabetic rats.

The identification of these compounds were mainly achieved by 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and FAB-MS. The results of our studies confirm that triterpene saponins from the cycloartane-type skeleton might be chemotaxonomically significant to the genus Astragalus.

Abstract
A bioassay-guided fractionation of methanol extracts of stem barks, combined with screening based on Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)-responsive neural stem cells (erNSCs) differentiation assay, has been used. This study resulted in the isolation of 3,3′-di- O-methylellagic acid 1, 3,3′-di- O-methyl ellagic acid-4- O-β-D-xylopyranoside 2, ellagic acid 3, and arjunolic acid 4. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit potent induction of neuronal differentiation in neurosphere stem cells with no cytotoxic effect. These results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 may be useful as pharmacological agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. These compounds may account, for the use of T. superba in folk medicine for nervous system and mental disorders.

The identification of these compounds were mainly achieved by 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and FAB-MS. The results of our studies confirm that triterpene saponins from the cycloartane-type skeleton might be chemotaxonomically significant to the genus Astragalus.

Abstract
Antibacterial bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract of the stem bark of Terminalia superba led to the isolation of four new triterpene glucosides (1-4) which were characterized as 2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), 2 alpha,3 beta, 21 beta-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), 2 alpha,3 beta, 29-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) and 2 alpha,3 beta,23,27-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4) together with the known triterpene 2 alpha,3 beta,23-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (5). Structures were established by spectroscopic methods including one- and two-dimensional NMR, EI-MS and HR-EI-MS. The antibacterial activity of 1-5 was also investigated against two gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), and four gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Shigella flexenari, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi) bacterial strains.

Abstract
A bioassay-guided fractionation of methanol extracts of stem barks, combined with screening based on Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)-responsive neural stem cells (erNSCs) differentiation assay, has been used. This study resulted in the isolation of 3,3'-di-O-methylellagic acid 1, 3,3'-di-O-methyl ellagic acid-4-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside 2, ellagic acid 3, and arjunolic acid 4. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit potent induction of neuronal differentiation in neurosphere stem cells with no cytotoxic effect. These results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 may be useful as pharmacological agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. These compounds may account, for the use of T. superba in folk medicine for nervous system and mental disorders.

From the stem bark of Tetrapleura tetraptera, two new oleanane-type saponins, tetrapteroside A 3-O-{6-O-[(2E,6S)-2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxyocta-2,7-dienoyl]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl}-3,27-dihydroxyoleanolic acid (1), and tetrapteroside B 3-O-{ beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-6-O-[(E)-feruloyl]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl}-3,27-dihydroxyoleanolic acid (2), were isolated. Further extractions from the roots led to the isolation of four known oleanane-type saponins. Their structures were elucidated by the combination of mass spectrometry (MS), one and two-dimensional NMR experiments.

Abstract
Four new spirostane-type saponins named borivilianosides E-H (1-4) were isolated from an ethanol extract of the roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum together with two known steroid saponins (5 and 6). The structures of 1-4 were elucidated using mainly 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry. The cytotoxicity of borivilianosides F (2), G (3), and H (4) and three known compounds was evaluated using two human colon cancer cell lines (HT-29 and HCT 116).

Abstract
Six new unusual C-4'-prenylated flavonols, dorsilurins F-K (1-6), together with six known compounds were isolated from the roots of Dorstenia psilurus, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. The isolated compounds exhibited moderate to low alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Dorsilurin F (1), with three unmodified prenyl groups, was the most active, while dorsilurin K (6), with only one unmodified prenyl group, was the least active compound. Furthermore, NMR data of dorsilurin C (7), isolated some years ago from the same plant, have been revised.
