Abstract
The Kamioka Liquid scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector is used in a search for single neutron or two-neutron intranuclear disappearance that would produce holes in the -shell energy level of (12)C nuclei. Such holes could be created as a result of nucleon decay into invisible modes (inv), e.g., n--> 3v or nn--> 2v. The deexcitation of the corresponding daughter nucleus results in a sequence of space and time-correlated events observable in the liquid scintillator detector. We report on new limits for one- and two-neutron disappearance: tau(n--> inv) > 5.8 x 10(29) years and tau (nn--> inv) > 1.4 x 10(30) years at 90% C.L. These results represent an improvement of factors of approximately 3 and >10(4) and over previous experiments.

Abstract
The otter shrews of mainland Africa are the closest relatives of the Madagascar tenrecs. We sought for similarities in placentation between the two groups and, in a wider context, with other mammals of the Afrotheria clade. Specimens of the Nimba otter shrew (Micropotamogale lamottei) were obtained from the Ivory Coast and examples of the giant otter shrew (Potamogale velox) from the Hill Collection. The Nimba otter shrew has a central haemophagous organ similar to that in tenrecs. The labyrinth of the Nimba otter shrew, however, is endotheliochorial with syncytial trophoblast enclosing the maternal vessels. On the other hand tenrecs have cellular haemomonochorial placentae and an associated spongy zone, which is not present in the Nimba otter shrew. The placenta of the giant otter shrew is also endotheliochorial. The central region of its placenta is particularly interesting, since the juxtafetal portion is clearly a haemophagous region whereas the labyrinth feeding this region is endotheliochorial. Thus there is considerable variation in placental morphology within Tenrecidae. Importantly, however, both otter shrews have a large allantoic sac divided into four intercommunicating lobes by two pairs of septal folds. A similar arrangement has been described for representatives of each of the remaining five orders within Afrotheria. This is significant because previous anatomical studies have failed to establish a single synapomorphy in support of Afrotheria.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A new straightforward and inexpensive one-pot procedure is described for the preparation of enantiopure five-membered cyclic nitrones starting from the corresponding lactols. Its efficiency relies on the condensation of unprotected hydroxylamine with readily available lactols and on the chemoselectivity of the subsequent esterification with methanesulfonyl chloride. The targeted enantiomerically pure pyrroline N-oxides are versatile synthetic intermediates: one of the nitrones so-obtained has been converted into new polyhydroxypyrrolizidines, analogues of the alkaloids rosmarinecine and crotanecine, which were assayed for their inhibitory activities toward 22 commercially available glycosidase enzymes. One of them ((-)-7a-epi-crotanecine) is a potent and selective inhibitor of alpha-mannosidases from jack beans and almonds.

Abstract
A range of new tetra- and pentahydroxylated seven-membered iminoalditols has been efficiently synthesized from epoxyazepane precursors via nucleophilic opening with hydride or oxygenated species and subsequent hydrogenolysis. One tetrahydroxylated azepane, a ring homologue of deoxymannojirimycin, displays a selective and fairly good inhibition of alpha-L-fucosidase.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions are among the most powerful methods in organic synthesis and play a crucial role in modern materials science and medicinal chemistry. Recent developments in the area of ligands and additives permit the cross-coupling of a large variety of reactants, including inexpensive and readily available sulfonyl chlorides. Their desulfitative carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions (Negishi, Stille, carbonylative Stille, Suzuki-Miyaura, and Sonogashira-Hagihara-type cross-couplings and Mizoroki-Heck-type arylations) are reviewed together with carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions with other organosulfur compounds as electrophilic reagents.

We derive model-independent, "naturalness" upper bounds on the magnetic moments munu of Dirac neutrinos generated by physics above the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. In the absence of fine-tuning of effective operator coefficients, we find that current information on neutrino mass implies that[EQUATION: SEE TEXT] bohr magnetons. Abstract
Based on histology, the placentae of eutherians are currently grouped in epitheliochorial, endotheliochorial and haemochorial placentae. In a haeckelian sense, the epitheliochorial contact with marked histiotrophic feeding by uterine milk is generally considered as primitive, especially since similar contacts exist in Marsupials. In contrast, the more intimate endotheliochorial and haemochorial contact, facilitating haemotrophic nutrition, is interpreted as a derived state. A cladistic analysis based on the phylogenetic relationships established by molecular analyses reveals that the basic clades are all characterized by an endotheliochorial or haemochorial placenta, and that the epitheliochorial placenta evolved at least three times in a convergent manner. This evolution may be explained by the fact that the epitheliochorial placenta in eutherians is more efficient in nutritional transfer (flow rate by exchange surface). Moreover, this arrangement may confer an advantage to the mother who can probably reduce the degree of manipulation by a genetically imprinted embryo.

Abstract
The detection of electron antineutrinos produced by natural radioactivity in the Earth could yield important geophysical information. The Kamioka liquid scintillator antineutrino detector (KamLAND) has the sensitivity to detect electron antineutrinos produced by the decay of 238U and 232Th within the Earth. Earth composition models suggest that the radiogenic power from these isotope decays is 16 TW, approximately half of the total measured heat dissipation rate from the Earth. Here we present results from a search for geoneutrinos with KamLAND. Assuming a Th/U mass concentration ratio of 3.9, the 90 per cent confidence interval for the total number of geoneutrinos detected is 4.5 to 54.2. This result is consistent with the central value of 19 predicted by geophysical models. Although our present data have limited statistical power, they nevertheless provide by direct means an upper limit (60 TW) for the radiogenic power of U and Th in the Earth, a quantity that is currently poorly constrained.

Abstract
A new sulfur dioxide-based organic chemistry has been developed as a novel approach for the stereoselective synthesis of polyene fragments based on our one-pot, four-component synthesis of polyfunctional epsilon-alkanesulfonyl-gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones. The flexibility and efficiency of this methodology are illustrated by the preparation of (+)-methyl (2E,4E,6E,8R,9S)-9-{[(tert-butyl)dimethylsilyl]oxy}-2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-11-(triethylsilyl)undeca-2,4,6-trien-10-ynoate, a synthetic intermediate of Nicolaou and co-workers, that corresponds to the C(1)-C(11) fragment of apoptolidin, which was used by the authors in their total synthesis of this promising anticancer agent.

Abstract
The otter shrews are members of the subfamily Potamogalinae within the family Tenrecidae. No description of the ovaries of any member of this subfamily has been published previously. The lesser hedgehog tenrec, Echinops telfairi, is a member of the subfamily Tenrecinae of the same family and, although its ovaries have not been described, other members of this subfamily have been shown to have ovaries with non-antral follicles. Examination of these two species illustrated that non-antral follicles were characteristic of the ovaries of both species, as was clefting and lobulation of the ovaries. Juvenile otter shrews range from those with only small follicles in the cortex to those with 300- to 400-microm follicles similar to those seen in non-pregnant and pregnant adults. As in other species, most of the growth of the oocyte occurred when follicles had one to two layers of granulosa cells. When larger follicles became atretic in the Nimba otter shrew, hypertrophy of the theca interna produced nodules of glandular interstitial tissue. In the tenrec, the hypertrophying theca interna cells in most large follicles appeared to undergo degeneration. Both species had some follicular fluid in the intercellular spaces between the more peripheral granulosa cells. It is suggested that this fluid could aid in separation of the cumulus from the remaining granulosa at ovulation. The protruding follicles in lobules and absence of a tunica albuginea might also facilitate ovulation of non-antral follicles. Ovaries with a thin-absent tunica albuginea and follicles with small-absent antra are widespread within both the Eulipotyphla and in the Afrosoricida, suggesting that such features may represent a primitive condition in ovarian development. Lobulated and deeply crypted ovaries are found in both groups but are not as common in the Eulipotyphla making inclusion of this feature as primitive more speculative.

Abstract
Condensation of a silylated beta-D-galactopyranosylaldehyde (3) with isolevoglucosenone (4) in the presence of Et(2)AlI provided bicyclic enone 5. Subsequent addition of BnNHOMe gave adduct 6, which was converted into 4-O-acetyl-1,6-anhydro-3-C-[(1 R)-1,3,4,5,7-penta-O-acetyl-2,6-anhydro-D-glycero-L-manno-heptitol-1-C-yl]-2-azido-2,3-dideoxy-beta-D-galacto-hexopyranose after liberation of the 2-amino group, its transformation into a 2-azido moiety, desilylation, and peracetylation. Ring-opening of the 1,6-anhydro galactopyranosyl unit and O-glycosidation with Fmoc-Ser-O-tBu afforded a 5:1 mixture of alpha- and beta-galactosides. Treatment with CH(3)COSH gave pure N-[(9H-fluoren-9-ylmethoxy)carbonyl]-{4,6-di-O-acetyl-3-C-[(1 R)-2,6-anhydro 1,3,4,5,7-penta-O-acetyl-D-glycero-L-manno-heptitol-1-C-yl]-2-[(N-acetyl)amino]-2,3-dideoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl}-l-serine tert-butyl ester (2), a protected form of a C-disaccharide analogue of the Thomsen-Friedenreich (or T) epitope (beta-D-Galp-(1-->3)-alpha-D-GalNAcp) alpha-O-conjugated to L-serine.

Abstract
New substituted pyrrolidine-3,4-diol derivatives were prepared from d-(-)- and l-(+)-phenyl glycinol. The influence of the configuration and the substitution of the lateral side chain of these derivatives on the inhibition of 25 commercial glycosidases were determined. (2R,3R,4S)-2-({[(1R)-2-Hydroxy-1-phenylethyl]amino}methyl)pyrrolidine-3,4-diol ((+)-7a) was a potent and selective inhibitor of jack bean alpha-mannosidase (K(i) = 135 nM). However, when evaluated on human tumor cells, 7a, and the reference compound swainsonine, did not efficiently inhibit the growth of glioblastoma cells. Further derivatization of the hydroxyl group with lipophilic groups to increase bioavailability improved their growth inhibitory properties for human glioblastoma and melanoma cells. In particular, the 4-bromobenzoyl derivative 26 demonstrated high efficacy for human tumor cells whereas primary human fibroblasts were less sensitive to 26. Therefore, functionalized pyrrolidines have the potential to inhibit the growth of tumor cells and display selectivity for tumor cells when compared to normal cells.

Abstract
The 'naked sugars' (+)- and (-)-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-2-one have been converted into (-)-conduramine B-1 ((-)-3) and its enantiomer (+)-3, respectively. They have been condensed with a variety of aldehydes in the presence of NaBH(OAc)(3). The N-substituted derivatives 4 and ent-4 so-obtained have been tested against two alpha-glucosidases, two amyloglucosidases, two beta-glucosidases and one beta-xylosidase for their inhibitory activities. Although (-)-3 and (+)-3 do not inhibit any of these enzymes at 1mM concentration, N-benzylated derivatives of (-)-conduramine B-1 are selective and competitive inhibitors of beta-glucosidases with K(i) in low micromolecular range.

Abstract
New conditions have been found for the desulfitative Mizoroki-Heck arylation and trifluoromethylation of mono- and disubustituted olefins with arenesulfonyl and trifluoromethanesulfonyl chlorides. Thus (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes with high stereoselectivity and 1,1,2-disubstituted alkenes with 12:1 to 21:1 E/Z steroselectivity can be obtained. Herrmann's palladacycle at 0.1 mol % is sufficient to catalyze these reactions, for which electron-rich or electron-poor sulfonyl chlorides and alkenes are suitable. If phosphine- and base-free conditions are required, 1 mol % [RhCl(C(2)H(4))(2)] catalyzes the desulfitative cross-coupling reactions. Contrary to results reported for [RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)]-catalyzed coupling reactions with sulfonyl chlorides, the palladium and rhodium desulfitative Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions are not inhibited by radical scavenging agents. Possible sulfones arising from the sulfonylation of alkenes at 60 degrees C are not desulfitated at higher temperatures in the presence of the Pd or Rh catalysts.

Abstract
We present results of a study of neutrino oscillation based on a 766 ton/year exposure of KamLAND to reactor antineutrinos. We observe 258 nu (e) candidate events with energies above 3.4 MeV compared to 365.2+/-23.7 events expected in the absence of neutrino oscillation. Accounting for 17.8+/-7.3 expected background events, the statistical significance for reactor nu (e) disappearance is 99.998%. The observed energy spectrum disagrees with the expected spectral shape in the absence of neutrino oscillation at 99.6% significance and prefers the distortion expected from nu (e) oscillation effects. A two-neutrino oscillation analysis of the KamLAND data gives Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2). A global analysis of data from KamLAND and solar-neutrino experiments yields Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2) and tan((2)theta=0.40(+0.10)(-0.07), the most precise determination to date.

Abstract
A few alpha-L-fucosidase inhibitors and alpha-D-glucosidase inhibitors have shown in vitro anti-HIV activities, that have been attributed to their ability to inhibit HIV entry. The mechanism of action of inhibitors such as 1-deoxynojirimycin (1) is not clearly established. One possible hypothesis is that the glycosidase inhibition affects the final conformation of the glycoproteins involved in the virus/cell recognition and fusion phenomena. This hypothesis is presented critically and the mechanisms of some glycoprotein biosynthesis are out-lined. Up to now, very few glycosidase inhibitors have been assayed for their potential as HIV entry inhibitors. Further assaying should be done and larger collections of glycosidase inhibitors should be prepared. To help investigations in that perspective, the inhibitory activities of alpha-glucosidase and alpha-L-fucosidase inhibitors have been summarized.

Abstract
In the presence of sulfur dioxide and an acid promoter, (-)-(1E,3Z)-2-methyl-1-((1S)-1-phenylethoxy)penta-1,3-dien-3-yl isobutyrate reacts with (Z)-3-(trimethylsilyloxy)pent-2-ene giving a silyl sulfinate intermediate that undergoes, in the presence of palladium catalyst, a desilylation and retro-ene elimination of SO(2) with formation of (-)-(1Z,2S,3R,4S)-1-ethylidene-2,4-dimethyl-5-oxo-3-((1S)-1-phenylethoxy)-heptyl isobutyrate as major product. This ethyl ketone undergoes cross-aldol reaction with (2S)-2-methyl-3-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]propanal giving an aldol that is reduced into a stereoheptad corresponding to the C(19)-C(27)-segment of Rifamycins with high diastereoselectivity and enantiomeric excess.

Abstract
We point out that extensions of the standard model with low scale (approximately TeV) lepton number violation (LNV) generally lead to a pattern of lepton flavor violation (LFV) experimentally distinguishable from the one implied by models with grand unified theory scale LNV. As a consequence, muon LFV processes provide a powerful diagnostic tool to determine whether or not the effective neutrino mass can be deduced from the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay. We discuss the role of mu-->egamma and mu-->e conversion in nuclei, which will be studied with high sensitivity in forthcoming experiments.
