Structural and mechanical properties of "peelable" organoaqueous dispersions with partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate)-borate networks: applications to cleaning painted surfaces

The preparation and structural characterization of a family of viscoelastic dispersions of borate cross-linked, 80% hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate) (80PVAc) in aqueous-organic liquids are presented. Correlations between mechanical properties (from rheological measurements) and the degree and nature of cross-linking (from (11)B NMR spectroscopy) are reported, and the results are used to assess their potential as low-impact cleaning agents for the surfaces of paintings. Because the dispersions can be prepared at room temperature by simple procedures from readily available materials and can contain up to 50% (w/w) of an organic liquid, they offer important advantages over previously described cleaning agents that are based on fully hydrolyzed PVAc (i.e., poly(vinyl alcohol). The mechanical properties of the various aqueous-organic dispersions, as determined quantitatively by rheological investigations and qualitatively by their ease of removal from a solid surface (i.e., the so-called "peel-off" ability) have been tuned systematically by varying the amount of organic liquid, its structure, and the concentrations of borax and 80PVAc. The (11)B NMR studies demonstrate that the concentration of borate ions actively participating in cross-linking increases significantly with the amount of organic liquid in the mixture. The degree of cross-linking remains constant when the 80PVAc and borax concentrations are varied, as long as their ratios are kept constant. Some of the 80PVAc-borax dispersions have been tested successfully as cleaning agents on the surface of a 16th-17th century oil-on-wood painting by Lodovico Cardi, "Il Cigoli", that was covered by a brown patina and on the surface of a Renaissance wall painting by Vecchietta in Santa Maria della Scala, Siena, Italy, that had a degraded polyacrylate coating from a previous conservation treatment.

Cosolvent gel-like materials from partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate)s and borax

A gel-like, high-viscosity polymeric dispersion (HVPD) based on cross-linked borate, partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl acetate) (xPVAc, where x is the percent hydrolysis) is described. Unlike hydro-HVPDs prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and borate, the liquid portion of these materials can be composed of up to 75% of an organic cosolvent because of the influence of residual acetate groups on the polymer backbone. The effects of the degree of hydrolysis, molecular weight, polymer and cross-linker concentrations, and type and amount of organic cosolvent on the rheological and structural properties of the materials are investigated. The stability of the systems is explored through rheological and melting-range studies. (11)B NMR and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) are used to probe the structure of the dispersions. The addition of an organic liquid to the xPVAc-borate HVPDs results in a drastic increase in the number of cross-linked borate species as well as the agglomeration of the polymer into bundles. These effects result in an increase in the relaxation time and thermal stability of the networks. The ability to make xPVAc-borate HVPDs with very large amounts of and rather different organic liquids, with very different rheological properties that can be controlled easily, opens new possibilities for applications of PVAc-based dispersions.

Reversible phase transitions within self-assembled fibrillar networks of (R)-18-(n-alkylamino)octadecan-7-ols in their carbon tetrachloride gels

The CCl(4) gel phases of a series of low-molecular-mass organogelators, (R)-18-(n-alkylamino)octadecan-7-ols (HSN-n, where n = 0-5, 18 is the alkyl chain length), appear to be unprecedented in that the fibrillar networks of some of the homologues undergo thermally reversible, gel-to-gel phase transitions, and some of those transitions are evident as opaque-transparent changes in the appearance of the samples. The gels have been examined at different concentrations and temperatures by a wide variety of spectroscopic, diffraction, thermal, and rheological techniques. Analyses of those data and data from the neat gelators have led to an understanding of the source of the gel-to-gel transitions. IR and SANS data implicate the expulsion (on heating the lower-temperature gel) or the inclusion (on cooling the higher-temperature gel) of molecules of CCl(4) that are interspersed between fibers in bundles. However, the root cause of the transitions is a consequence of changes in the molecular packing of the HSN-n within the fibers. This study offers opportunities to design new gelators that are capable of behaving in multiple fashions without entering the sol/solution phase, and it identifies a heretofore unknown transformation of organogels.

Insights into the mechanical properties of a silicone oil gel with a 'latent' gelator, 1-octadecylamine, and CO(2) as an 'activator'

A detailed study of the rheological properties of silicone oil gels, made from a low-molecular-mass organic gelator, a combination of 1-octadecylamine (a latent gelator) and carbon dioxide (an ‘activating’ molecule), is reported. Information gleaned from the mechanical measurements is used to characterize the gel networks and how they respond to temperature and strain. It is shown, for example, that very precise measurements of the gel-to-sol transitions can be obtained from plots of viscosity versus temperature.

New frontiers in materials science for art conservation: responsive gels and beyond

The works of art and artifacts that constitute our cultural heritage are subject to deterioration, both from internal and from external factors. Surfaces that interact with the environment are the most prone to aging and decay; accordingly, soiling is a prime factor in the degradation of surfaces and the attendant disfigurement of a piece. Coatings that were originally intended to protect or contribute aesthetically to an artwork should be removed if they begin to have a destructive impact on its appearance or surface chemistry. Since the mid-19th century, organic solvents have been the method of choice for cleaning painted surfaces and removing degraded coatings. Care must be taken to choose a solvent mixture that minimizes swelling of or leaching from the original paint films, which would damage and compromise the physical integrity of all the layers of paint. The use of gels and poultices, first advocated in the 1980s, helps by localizing the solvent and, in some cases, by reducing solvent permeation into underlying paint layers. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to remove gels and their residues from a paint surface. In this Account, we address the removal problem by examining the properties of three classes of innovative gels for use on artwork--rheoreversible gels, magnetic gels, and "peelable" gels. Their rheological properties and efficacies for treating the surfaces of works have been studied, demonstrating uniquely useful characteristics in each class: (1) Rheoreversible gels become free-flowing on application of a chemical or thermal "switch". For art conservation, a chemical trigger is preferred. Stable gels formed by bubbling CO(2) through solutions of polyallylamine or polyethylenimines (thereby producing ammonium carbamates, which act as chain cross-links) can be prepared with a wide range of solvent mixtures. After solubilization of varnish and dirt, addition of a weak acid (mineral or organic) displaces the CO(2), and the resulting free-flowing liquid can be removed gently. (2) Incorporation of magnetic, coated-ferrite nanoparticles into polyacrylamide gels adds functionality to a versatile system comprising oil-in-water microemulsions, aqueous micellar solutions, or xerogels that act as sponges. The ferrite particles allow the use of magnets both to place the gels precisely on a surface and to lift them from it after cleaning. (3) Novel formulations of poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate gels, which accept a range of organic cosolvents, show promise for swelling and dissolving organic coatings. This family of gels can be quite stiff but can be spread. They are non-sticky and have sufficient strength to be removed by peeling or lifting them from a sensitive surface. These three classes of gels are potentially very important soft materials to augment and improve the range of options available for conserving cultural heritage, and their interesting chemical-physical properties open a rich area for future scientific investigation.

Reduced in vivo high-energy phosphates precede adriamycin-induced cardiac dysfunction

Adriamycin (ADR) is an established, life-saving antineoplastic agent, the use of which is often limited by cardiotoxicity. ADR-induced cardiomyopathy is often accompanied by depressed myocardial high-energy phosphate (HEP) metabolism. Impaired HEP metabolism has been suggested as a potential mechanism of ADR cardiomyopathy, in which case the bioenergetic decline should precede left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. We tested the hypothesis that murine cardiac energetics decrease before LV dysfunction following ADR (5 mg/kg ip, weekly, 5 injections) in the mouse. As a result, the mean myocardial phosphocreatine-to-ATP ratio (PCr/ATP) by spatially localized (31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy decreased at 6 wk after first ADR injection (1.79 + or - 0.18 vs. 1.39 + or - 0.30, means + or - SD, control vs. ADR, respectively, P < 0.05) when indices of systolic and diastolic function by magnetic resonance imaging were unchanged from control values. At 8 wk, lower PCr/ATP was accompanied by a reduction in ejection fraction (67.3 + or - 3.9 vs. 55.9 + or - 4.2%, control vs. ADR, respectively, P < 0.002) and peak filling rate (0.56 + or - 0.12 vs. 0.30 + or - 0.13 microl/ms, control vs. ADR, respectively, P < 0.01). PCr/ATP correlated with peak filling rate and ejection fraction, suggesting a relationship between cardiac energetics and both LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction. In conclusion, myocardial in vivo HEP metabolism is impaired following ADR administration, occurring before systolic or diastolic abnormalities and in proportion to the extent of eventual contractile abnormalities. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that impaired HEP metabolism contributes to ADR-induced myocardial dysfunction.

Robust organogels from nitrogen-containing derivatives of (R)-12-hydroxystearic acid as gelators: comparisons with gels from stearic acid derivatives

Thirteen members of a new class of low molecular-mass organogelators (LMOGs), amides, and amines based on (R)-12-hydroxystearic acid (HSA; i.e., (R)-12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid) and the properties of their gels have been investigated by a variety of structural and thermal techniques. The abilities of these LMOGs, molecules with primary and secondary amide and amine groups and the ammonium carbamate salt of 1-aminooctadecan-12-ol, to gelate a wide range of organic liquids have been ascertained. Their gelating efficiencies are compared with those of HSA and the corresponding nitrogen-containing molecules derived from stearic acid (i.e., HSA that lacks a 12-hydroxyl group). Several of the HSA-derived molecules are exceedingly efficient LMOGs, with much less than 1 wt % being necessary to gelate several organic liquids at room temperature. Generally, the self-assembled fibrillar networks of the gels consist of spherulitic objects whose dimensions depend on the protocol employed to cool the precursor sol phases. X-ray studies indicate that the LMOG molecules are packed in lamellae within the fibers that constitute the spherulites. In addition, some of the organogels exhibit unusual thixotropic properties: they recover a large part of their viscoelasticity within seconds of being destroyed by excessive strain shearing. This recovery is at least an order of magnitude faster than for any other organogel with a crystalline fibrillar network reported to date. Correlations of these LMOG structures (as well as with those that lack a hydroxyl group along the n-alkyl chain, a headgroup at its end, or both) with the properties of their gels, coupled with the unusual theological properties of these systems, point to new directions for designing LMOGs and organogels.

Self-assembly of esters of arjunolic acid into fibrous networks and the properties of their organogels

Nine esters of a naturally occurring triterpenoid, arjunolic acid (from Terminalia arjuna), with alkyl chains have been synthesized, and their self-assembly has been studied in organic liquids. All of the esters examined were found to be excellent gelators. No birefringence was detected in optical micrographs of the transparent toluene gels with 5% (w/w) ethyl arjunolate or 5% (w/w) p-nitrobenzyl arjunolate as the gelator, but a spherulitic-type pattern was seen for a gel of 1.2% (w/w) p-nitrobenzyl arjunolate in 1/1 (w/w) chloroform/cyclohexane. Electron microscope images revealed self-assembled fibrillar network (SAFIN) structures with right-handed helical ribbons in some gels. With increasing concentration of the gelators, the gel-to-sol transition temperature (T(gel)) increased and then approached plateau values. Differential scanning thermograms demonstrated that the heats for transition from transparent gels to sols of ethyl arjunolate or p-nitrobenzyl ajunolate in toluene are very small. Powder X-ray diffractograms revealed that the molecular packing in the SAFIN of the 5% (w/w) ethyl aijunoate in the toluene gel was amorphous and similar to the diffractogram recorded for the neat gelator. Although the diffractogram of neat p-nitrobenzyl arjunolate consisted of broad peaks, suggesting disordered packing, the low-angle peaks of the corresponding toluene gel were much sharper; these results indicate more crystalline packing in the SAFIN than in the neat gelator. The kinetics and growth of the transformation of sols of p-nitrobenzyl arjunolate in 1/1 (w/w) chloroform/cyclohexane to their gels have been investigated at different incubation temperatures by circular dichroism spectroscopy. The data have been analyzed to probe the mechanism of SAFIN formation and the relationship between the molecular structures of the esters of arjunolic acid and their abilities to function as gelators of a wide variety of organic liquids.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate hydro/cosolvent gels: viscoelastic properties, solubilizing power, and application to art conservation

We report the development of a new type of hydrogel in which a cosolvent has been added to the water component. The gel networks are based on the well-known poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate systems (PVA-borate). However, it is shown that the rheological and solubilizing properties of the hydrogels can be modified drastically by the addition of a cosolvent. The studies have focused on 1-propanol as the added liquid, although it is shown that others (propylene carbonate, 1-pentanol, cyclohexanone, and 2-butanol) are amenable to making modified hydrogels as well. In addition to the rheological measurements, the gels have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (free water index) and determination of their solubilizing power. Finally, the gels have been applied to clean and oxidized varnish (patina) from the surface of a XVI-XVII century oil-on-wood painting by Ludovico Cardi detto il Cigoli. The mode of cleaning by and removal of the PVA-borate water/1-propanol gel from the painted surface demonstrate several advantages over other gels used in art conservation.
