Abstract
Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats, a new obese diabetic model, reportedly presented with features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) after 32 weeks of age. We tried to accelerate the onset of NASH in SDT fatty rats using dietary cholesterol loading and noticed changes in the blood choline level which is expected to be a NASH biomarker. Body weight and biochemical parameters were measured from 8 to 24 weeks of age. At 16, 20, 24 weeks, pathophysiological analysis of the livers were performed. Hepatic lipids, lipid peroxides, and the expression of mRNA related to triglyceride (TG) synthesis, inflammation, and fibrosis were evaluated at 24 weeks. Hepatic fibrosis was observed in SDT fatty rats fed cholesterol-enriched diets (SDT fatty-Cho) from 16 weeks. Furthermore, hepatic lipids and lipid peroxide were significantly higher in SDT fatty-Cho than SDT fatty rats fed normal diets at 24 weeks. Hepatic mRNA expression related to TG secretion decreased in SDT fatty-Cho, and the mRNA expression related to inflammation and fibrosis increased in SDT fatty-Cho at 24 weeks. Furthermore, SDT fatty-Cho presented with increased plasma choline, similar to human NASH. There were no significant changes in the effects of feeding a cholesterol-enriched diet in Sprague-Dawley rats. SDT fatty-Cho has the potential to become a valuable animal model for NASH associated with type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Abstract
The ovules of flowering plants consist of a central embryo sac and surrounding layers of the inner and outer integument. As these structural units eventually give rise to the embryo/endosperm and seed coat, respectively, a precisely organized ovule structure is essential for successful fertilization and seed production. In Arabidopsis thaliana, correct ovule patterning depends on the restricted expression of the CLASS III HOMEODOMAIN LEUCINE ZIPPER (HD-ZIP III) gene PHABULOSA (PHB) in the apical region of the incipient inner integument, which in turn is regulated via post-transcriptional suppression by miR165 and miR166 (miR165/6) derived from multiple MIR165/6 genes. While a common subset of MIR165/6 genes regulate PHB expression in the root meristem, leaf primordium and embryo, it is unknown whether the same MIR165/6 subset also regulate PHB expression during ovule development. Furthermore, it is unclear where in the ovule primordia miR165/6 are produced. Here, we show that a distinct set of MIR165/6 genes that are highly expressed in the small regions of early ovule primordia restrict the PHB expression domain to promote integument formation. MIR165/6 genes that function in ovule development are phylogenetically distinct from those acting in roots and leaf primordia. Taken together, our data suggest that members of the MIR165/6 gene family are diversified in their expression capacity to establish elaborate PHB expression patterns depending on the developmental context, thereby allowing HD-ZIP III transcription factors to regulate multiple aspects of plant development.

Abstract
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a major factor contributing to visual disabilities in diabetic patients, and the number of patients is increasing. Animal models play a key role in the development of novel therapies. In this study, pathophysiological analyses of ocular lesions in Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) fatty rats were performed. First, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) concentrations in vitreous humor, retinal vascular permeability and retinal thickness were measured in SDT fatty rats (Experiment 1). Furthermore, the pharmacological effects of two anti-diabetic drugs, phlorizin and pioglitazone, on retinal lesions were evaluated (Experiment 2). As results, the SDT fatty rats exhibited VEGF increase in vitreous humor at 8 and 16 weeks of age, and both retinal vascular hyperpermeability and retinal thickening at 16 weeks of age. In particular, the layers between the retinal internal limiting membrane and the outer nuclear layer were thickened. Phlorizin treatment from 4 to 16 weeks of age improved hyperglycemia and normalized retinal thickness; however, the effect of pioglitazone on retinal thickness was not strong despite the normalization of hyperglycemia. These data demonstrate that the male SDT fatty rat is a useful model for developing new therapeutic approaches in DME.

Abstract
The life of currently-available centrifugal pumps is limited to no more than three days. As a magnetically suspended centrifugal pump (MSCP) contains no shaft or seal, it could be expected to have a longer life expectancy. The MSCP was evaluated in a chronic animal model using eight adult sheep. Left ventricular assist with the MSCP was instituted between the left atrium and the descending aorta. The flow rates ranged from 2.5 to 6.0 L/min. The duration of the experiments ranged from 14 to 60 days. No mechanical failure occurred. The plasma free hemoglobin levels remained within an acceptable range (3-19 mg/dL). No reduction in the counts of red blood cells or platelets was observed. Thrombus formation within the MSCP was recognized in one pump. The main reason for termination was thromboembolism derived from the circuits. Three types of regulation methods (constant rotational speed, constant motor current, and controlled motor current) were also investigated. Regulation by a constant motor current mode altered the pressure-flow (P-Q) characteristics, and thereby, a steadier pump flow was obtained compared with regulation in the constant rotational speed mode. Moreover, the controlled motor current mode can change the P-Q relationship. These results demonstrate that the MSCP is a promising device for long-term use.

Abstract
The epidermis of Pinus mikii leaves was studied. Pinus mikii is a fossil species from the lower Miocene to lower Pleistocene of Japan. In P. mikii, the stomata are closely set and guard cells have polar extensions of cuticle on their inner cell walls. These features suggest that P. mikii is closely related to P. luchuensis, an extant species endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Pinus mikii also shares some epidermal characters with P. thunbergii, which is semiendemic to Japan. It is possible that P. mikii is a common ancestor of both of these extant species. The distribution of P. mikii expanded during the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO), but its distribution shifted southwards as global temperatures declined. Pinus luchuensis likely speciated from the retreating population, whereas P. thunbergii arose from a population that adapted to the cooler climate. This study provides a new perspective on the contribution of MMCO relicts to the floristic diversity of Japan.

Abstract
In the context of climate change, salinity intrusion into rivers has been, and will be, one of the most important issues for coastal water resources management. A combination of changes, including increased temperature, change in regional rainfall, especially sea level rise (SLR) related to climate change, will have significant impacts on this phenomenon. This paper presents the outcomes of a study conducted in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam (MKD) for evaluating the effect of sea water intrusion under a new SLR scenario. Salinity intrusion was simulated by one-dimensional (1D) modeling. The relative sea level projection was constructed corresponding to the RCP 6.0 emission scenario for MKD based on the statistical downscaling method. The sea level in 2050 is projected to increase from 25 cm to 30 cm compared to the baseline period (in 2000). Furthermore, the simulated results suggested that salinity greater than 4 g/l, which affects rice yield, will intrude up to 50-60 km into the river. Approximately 30,000 ha of agricultural area will be affected if the sea level rise is 30 cm.

Abstract
As a generic property, all substances transfer heat through microscopic collisions of constituent particles 1 . A solid conducts heat through both transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, but a liquid employs only longitudinal vibrations2,3. As a result, a solid is usually thermally more conductive than a liquid. In canonical viewpoints, such a difference also serves as the dynamic signature distinguishing a solid from a liquid. Here, we report liquid-like thermal conduction observed in the crystalline AgCrSe2. The transverse acoustic phonons are completely suppressed by the ultrafast dynamic disorder while the longitudinal acoustic phonons are strongly scattered but survive, and are thus responsible for the intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity. This scenario is applicable to a wide variety of layered compounds with heavy intercalants in the van der Waals gaps, manifesting a broad implication on suppressing thermal conduction. These microscopic insights might reshape the fundamental understanding on thermal transport properties of matter and open up a general opportunity to optimize performances of thermoelectrics.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: The combination therapy of Bevacizumab (B) and Paclitaxel (P) has proved to prolong progression free survival (PFS) in E2100 and MERiDiAN study for advanced and metastatic breast cancer(AMBC). Because of its longer PFS, developing optimal therapeutic strategy of B+P to improve survival, including management of toxicity is crucial. From the International Consensus Conference for Advanced Breast Cancer, most experts agreed the maintenance endocrine therapy after effective induction chemotherapy in AMBC. In KBCSG-TR 1214 study, we planned to examine the following clinical questions. 1. As a maintenance therapy, which is more effective either endocrine therapy alone (E) or endocrine therapy with capecitabine (E+C)? 2. Can maintenance therapy reduce toxicity of B+P and restore patient's QOL.? 3. How effective is B+P re-challenge after failure of maintenance therapy?
Methods: KBCSG-TR 1214 study is multicenter open-labeled randomized phase II trial for hormone receptor (HR)-positive and HER2-nagative patientswho have experienced none or one prior chemotherapy for AMBC. Patients will receive B (10mg/kg q2w) in combination with P (90mg/m2 on day 1, 8, and 15 q4w) as an induction therapy. Patients without progression after 6 cycles of B+P will be randomized to E or E+C. Endocrine treatment has been administrated by their physician's choice. Patients in E+C will receive endocrine therapy with capecitabine 1657mg/m2 on day1 to 21 q4w. Stratification factors for randomization are menopausal status, presence of target lesion, number of prior endocrine therapies for AMBC, with or without 1st line chemotherapy for AMBC. After progression of maintenance therapy (E or E+C), B+P will be started again as a re-challenge therapy. Primary end point is PFS of maintenance therapy. Secondary end points include time to failure of strategy from randomization, efficacy of re-challenge therapy, overall survival and safety of induction therapy. Translational research is also planned. VEGF, angiopoetin-1, and apelin in plasma will be measured at four points (before induction therapy, at the beginning of the maintenance therapy and the re-induction therapy, and at the end of the trial). The sample size was calculated by typeIerror (1-sided) of 0.05 and 80% power to estimate median PFS of each maintenance therapy 9 months with a threshold of 6 months. The target number of patients enrolled and randomized after induction therapy was 120 and 90, respectively.
Enrollment has been completed with 116 patients as of April, 2016 and 90 patients had been successful to shift to the maintenance phase with randomization. The last patient had been randomized on October, 2016. The first analysis will be planned during the second quarter of 2018 (UMIN000008662).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Spinal anaesthesia carries a risk of hypotension. We hypothesized that pleth variability index and perfusion index would assess maternal volume status, and thus, allow identification of patients at higher risk of developing hypotension after spinal anaesthesia for caesarean delivery. METHODS Fifty patients undergoing elective caesarean delivery were enrolled. All patients received spinal anaesthesia with 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine (10 mg) and fentanyl (10 mcg). Blood pressure was measured every minute. Pleth variability index and perfusion index were automatically measured throughout the procedure using pulse oximetry on the index finger. In case of hypotension (systolic blood pressure below 90 mmHg or 80% of the baseline value), ephedrine 5 mg was administered. Receiver-operating characteristic and multivariate logistic regression analyses for spinal anaesthesia-induced hypotension were performed. RESULTS Hypotension occurred in 32 patients (64%). The areas under the receiver-operating characteristic curve were 0.751 (95% confidence interval: 0.597-0.904) for pleth variability index before anaesthesia, 0.793 (95% confidence interval: 0.655-0.930) for pleth variability index after anaesthesia and 0.731 (95% confidence interval: 0.570-0.892) for perfusion index change (percent change in perfusion index induced by spinal anaesthesia). The optimal threshold value of pleth variability index (after anaesthesia) for predicting hypotension was 18% (sensitivity: 78.1%, specificity: 83.3%). Pleth variability index after spinal anaesthesia was an independent factor for hypotension (odds ratio: 1.21, P = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS Pleth variability index after spinal anaesthesia was a good predictor of spinal anaesthesia-induced hypotension in patients undergoing caesarean delivery. In addition, perfusion index change after spinal anaesthesia has the potential to predict hypotension.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are potential candidates for new antimicrobials due to their tunable antibacterial and antifungal properties that are required to keep pace with the growing challenge of bacterial resistance. To a great extent their antimicrobial actions are related to the interactions of ILs with cell membranes. Here, we report the effects of ILs on the nanoscopic dynamics and phase behaviour of a dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) membrane, a model cell membrane, as studied using neutron scattering techniques. Two prototypical imidazolium-based ILs 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM[BF4]) and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (DMIM[BF4]), which differ only in terms of the alkyl chain length of cations, have been used for the present study. Fixed Elastic Window Scan (FEWS) shows that the incorporation of ILs affects the phase behaviour of the phospholipid membrane significantly and the transition from a solid gel to a fluid phase shifts to lower temperature. This is found to be consistent with our differential scanning calorimetry measurements. DMIM[BF4], which has a longer alkyl chain cation, affects the phase behaviour more strongly in comparison to BMIM[BF4]. The pressure-area isotherms of the DMPC monolayer measured at the air-water interface show that in the presence of ILs, isotherms shift towards higher area-per lipid molecule. DMIM[BF4] is found to shift the isotherm to a greater extent compared to BMIM[BF4]. Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) data show that both ILs act as a plasticizer, which enhances the fluidity of the membrane. DMIM[BF4] is found to be a stronger plasticizing agent in comparison to BMIM[BF4] that has a cation with a shorter alkyl chain. The incorporation of DMIM[BF4] enhances not only the long range lateral motion but also the localised internal motion of the lipids. On the other hand, BMIM[BF4] acts weakly in comparison to DMIM[BF4] and mainly alters the localised internal motion of the lipids. Any subtle change in the dynamical properties of the membrane can profoundly affect the stability of the cell. Hence, the dominant effect of the IL with the longer chain length on the dynamics of the phospholipid membrane might be correlated with its cytotoxic activity. QENS data analysis has provided a quantitative description of the effects of the two imidazolium-based ILs on the dynamical and phase behaviour of the model cell membrane, which is essential for a detailed understanding of their action mechanism.

Abstract
Objective Inconsistent results have been found in prior studies investigating the accuracy of self‐reported waist circumference, and no study has investigated the validity of self‐reported waist circumference among Japanese individuals. This study used the diagnostic standard of metabolic syndrome to assess the accuracy of individual's self‐reported height, weight and waist circumference in a Japanese sample. Methods Study participants included 7,443 Japanese men and women aged 35–79 years. They participated in a cohort study's baseline survey between 2007 and 2011. Participants' height, weight and waist circumference were measured, and their body mass index was calculated. Self‐reported values were collected through a questionnaire before the examination. Results Strong correlations between measured and self‐reported values for height, weight and body mass index were detected. The correlation was lowest for waist circumference (men, 0.87; women, 0.73). Men significantly overestimated their waist circumference (mean difference, 0.8 cm), whereas women significantly underestimated theirs (mean difference, 5.1 cm). The sensitivity of self‐reported waist circumference using the cut‐off value of metabolic syndrome was 0.83 for men and 0.57 for women. Conclusions Due to systematic and random errors, the accuracy of self‐reported waist circumference was low. Therefore, waist circumference should be measured without relying on self‐reported values, particularly in the case of women.

Abstract
Empirical calibrations of full-energy peak and total efficiency curves for well-type and coaxial p-type germanium detectors were carried out using several combinations of practical nuclides. As a result, reliable efficiency functions of both types of detectors were successfully obtained using a home-made program coded with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and the "Solver" add-in in Excel™. We also examined the applicability of our advanced program to volumetric sources using squared-to-linear curve technique.
