Abstract
The effect of a soil amendment on ammonium nitrogen transformation and nitrogen retention in broiler manure was evaluated. Prior to incubation, broiler manure was mixed with autoclaved soil or non-autoclaved soil in different ratios to make 1 kg mixtures; broiler manure:non-autoclaved soil=9:1, 5:5, and 1:9 or broiler manure:autoclaved soil=9:1, 5:5, and 1:9. The non-autoclaved soil treatment reduced either numerically or significantly NH(4)(+)-N concentration compared to the autoclaved soil treatment during the 8-wk incubation. Total-N concentration of the non-autoclaved soil treatments was lower than the autoclaved soil treatments from 4 to 8 wk. The lowest manure to non-autoclaved soil treatment (M:S=1:9) had considerably more nitrite and nitrate; however, the higher ratio manure to non-autoclaved soil treatments (M:S=9:1 and 5:5) had slightly higher total nitrite and nitrate levels compared to the same ratio of autoclaved soil treatments. The moisture level of the 9:1, 5:5, and 1:9 M:S treatments were approximately 70, 45, and 30%, respectively. The results indicated that nitrifying bacteria in the non-autoclaved soil reduced the ammonium nitrogen concentrations of poultry manure by converting NH(3) or NH(4)(+) to NO(2)(-) or NO(3)(-). However, the higher moisture levels in treatments with greater manure to soil ratios (M:S=9:1 and 5:5) created anaerobic conditions that allowed for denitrification and greater N losses.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate skeletal quality and eggshell parameters of molted hens at the end of the second laying cycle. Sixty Single Comb White Leghorn hens were used for this study. There were 2 controls and 4 molting treatments: full-fed control 1 (82 wk old; FF1), full-fed control 2 (122 wk old; FF2), feed withdrawal (FW), 100% alfalfa (A100), 90% alfalfa/10% layer ration (A90), and 70% alfalfa/30% layer ration (A70). At the end of the second laying cycle (approximately 122 wk of age), hens were euthanized by CO2. Tibia and femur were collected. There were no differences in bone parameters between FF1 and FF2 (P > 0.05) hens. There were no differences in bone parameters among the different molting dietary treatments (P > 0.05). In the eggshell parameters, the FF2 hens exhibited heavier egg weights than the FF1 (P < 0.05), whereas the percentage shell and egg production of the FF1 birds were significantly higher than those of the FF2 birds. Shell weights of the FW and A90 birds were significantly heavier than that of the A100. The correlation analysis showed that overall bone parameters were negatively correlated with eggshell parameters. Bone parameters were highly correlated with each other. Shell weight, percentage shell, and shell thickness were positively correlated with each other, whereas egg weight was negatively correlated with percentage shell. These results suggest that age of hens and molting dietary treatments influence egg parameters, and eggshell formation is closely related to bone metabolism in laying hens.

Abstract
Molting is a common practice used by the commercial egg industry to rejuvenate flocks for a second or third laying cycle. During this time the hens rest from production, and the reproductive organs are rejuvenated to increase production and quality during the next laying cycle. Although feed withdrawal (FW) is the most popular and effective method of molt induction, it has come under scrutiny due to food safety issues and animal welfare issues. This study involved feeding alfalfa mixed with layer ration at different ratios to hens to determine their ability to induce molt. The treatment ratios were 100% alfalfa (A100), 90% alfalfa and 10% layer ration (A90), and 70% alfalfa and 30% layer ration (A70). In addition, a fully fed (FF) nonmolted control and a FW negative control were used. Alfalfa is an insoluble, high fiber feedstuff with low metabolizable energy. Egg production for A90 and FW treatments ceased completely by d 6, whereas birds fed A100 and A70 ceased egg production by d 8. Ovary and oviduct weight of hens fed all molting diets decreased (P < 0.05) by an average of 1.5 to 2.5% (BW basis) compared with FF control during the 9-d molt induction period. As the percentage of layer ration increased, feed intake also increased and percentage of BW loss decreased during the 9-d molt induction period. Hens molted by FW lost an average of 25.8% BW, whereas A70 hens lost 18.9% BW. Nonmolted hens (FF) and A70 treatment hens had significantly lower (P < 0.05) egg production when compared with all other treatments over the 39-wk postmolt period. FF treatment hens also had lower (P < 0.05) albumen heights when compared with all other treatments. From these results, alfalfa or alfalfa mixed with layer ration appears to be viable alternatives to conventional FW methods for the successful induction of molt and retention of postmolt performance.

Abstract
This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effects of dietary ZnSO4 supplementation on ammonia volatilization and nitrogen retention in hen manure. One hundred twenty, 45-wk-old commercial Leghorn laying hens were sequentially fed diets with 1000, 2000, and 3000 ppm Zn as ZnSO4 (Zn-1000, Zn-2000, and Zn-3000), then followed by two control dietary periods with 114 ppm Zn (Control-1 and Control-2) for a total of five consecutive eight-day experiment periods, respectively. When hens were fed the 1000 and 2000 ppm Zn treatment diets, room ammonia levels were significantly reduced compared to the control diets. Dietary Zn treatments reduced the decomposition of uric acid, resulting in an increase in manure total-N retention compared to the control fed birds. The 1000 ppm Zn supplement had no adverse effects on hen body weight, feed consumption, egg production, egg weight, albumen height, or shell thickness. However, hens fed the diet containing 3000 ppm Zn had significantly depressed body weight, feed consumption, egg production, egg weight, and shell thickness. Zinc levels of egg contents increased linearly as dietary Zn levels increased. These levels in eggs would not be a problem for human consumption because these are much less than the daily Zn recommended dietary allowance. Although land application of such manure will not cause environmental problems or crop toxicity, proper monitoring of soil and crop Zn levels and effective nutrient management planning would be well advised.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of spontaneous acquisition of resistance to select antibiotics by Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) when grown in glucose amended continuous flow culture at slow (D = 0.025 h(-1)) or fast (D = 0.27 h(-1)) dilution rates. The bacterium was grown in LB minimal medium (pH 6.25) containing no antibiotics. Upon achieving steady state, samples were plated to tryptic soy agar (TSA) alone or supplemented (per ml) with 2 and 16 microg oxytetracycline, 4 and 16 microg tetracycline, 2 and 64 microg kanamycin, and 0.25 and 2 microg enrofloxacin. Regardless of growth rate, CFU of resistant ST from the TSA containing antibiotics was less than 2 x 10(1) except for 2 microg kanamycin and 0.25 microg enrofloxacin treatments (higher than 1 x 10(9) and 4 x 10(7) CFU of resistant ST for trials 1 and 2, respectively). Frequency of recovering resistant ST from the TSA containing the higher antibiotic concentrations was less than 1 in 10(9) for all antibiotics, but was higher on the media containing 2 microg kanamycin and 0.25 microg enrofloxacin at both slow and fast growth rates. In general, minimal susceptibility differences were detected for isolates from slow and fast dilution rates.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factors (IGF) act as regulators that modulate proliferation and differentiation of various cells. Also, IGF are involved in metabolism and body growth by regulating the synthesis and degradation of glycogen and proteins in animals. However, the effect of IGF system on body growth in poultry including Korean Native Ogol chickens (KNOC) has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the expressions of IGF system and the relationship of IGF with body growth during posthatch growth in KNOC. Sera and organs were collected at hatch and at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wk. The mRNA expressions of IGF, IGF-I receptor, and IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-2 were quantitatively analyzed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. The IGF concentrations were measured by heterologous RIA, and the expression of IGFBP-2 was detected by Western ligand blotting. The body weight of KNOC rapidly increased during the experimental period, and increase in breast muscle weight was 5-fold from 1 to 3 wk. Although the circulating IGF-I concentration gradually increased, the level of IGF-I in breast muscle rapidly declined during growth period. The IGF-II expression was not similar to IGFBP-2 during postnatal growth. Moreover, the breast muscle IGF-II concentration was mainly correlated with body growth at 7 wk and breast muscle IGF-I at 1 and 5 wk. Taken together, the present study suggested that the endocrine manner of IGF-I was more important than auto/paracrine actions in body growth of KNOC and that expression of IGF-II was involved in body growth and IGF-I during posthatch growth of KNOC.

Abstract
A commercial-feed-grade form of zinc propionate was examined as a potential feed amendment at a concentration of 1% zinc to induce molt in 90-wk-old hens. Dietary treatments consisted of 4 treatment groups of 28 birds each randomly assigned to either (1) molted conventionally by feed withdrawal, (2) 1% zinc as Zn acetate, (3) 1% zinc as Zn propionate, or (4) nonmolted control for 9 d. Ovary weights of hens fed Zn acetate or Zn propionate were not significantly different from each other, but hens fed Zn acetate or Zn propionate were significantly (p<0.05) lighter than the ovary weight of nonmolted control hens. Zinc concentrations in the kidney and liver were significantly (p<0.05) increased in both Zn acetate- and Zn propionate-molted hens when compared to either nonmolted control-fed hens or feed-withdrawal molted hens. Over the entire 3-mo postmolt period, there were no significant differences in interior or exterior egg qualities among the four treatments. Egg production of hens fed Zn acetate was significantly lower than feed-withdrawal hens, Zn propionate-fed hens, or nonmolted control hens (p<0.05). The data of the current study demonstrated that feeding a feed grade of Zn propionate (1% Zn)-supplemented diet can induce molt and retain postmolt egg quality and production comparable to hens molted by feed withdrawal.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate effects of different bone preparation methods on bone parameters and the correlations between bone breaking strength and the other bone parameters. Bone breaking strength is dramatically changed depending on bone preparation methods, whereas other bone parameters such as ash content and ash concentration are not significantly influenced by bone preparation methods. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 3 bone preparations (fresh, dry, and fat-free dry) on bone parameters and the relationship between bone breaking strength and bone parameters. Sixty Single Comb White Leghorn hens were used for this study. Hens were euthanized by CO2 gas, and the right tibia and femur were collected. The bones were divided into 3 treatment groups: fresh, dry, and fat-free dry. There were no significant differences in fresh weight, bone volume, dried weight, ash weight, and ash concentration of tibia and femur among the treatments. However, fresh tibia (24.13 kg) exhibited more bone breaking strength compared with the dried (9.90 kg) and fat-free dried bones (7.41 kg) (P < 0.05). The bone breaking strength (20.97 kg) of fresh femur was also significantly higher than the dried (9.22 kg) and fat-free dried femurs (6.94 kg). The bone breaking strength of the fresh bone was highly correlated with dried weight, ash weight, and ash concentration, whereas that of the fat-free dried bone was poorly correlated with the other bone parameters. The results indicate that fresh bone gives better bone breaking strength correlated to the other bone parameters than dry or fat-free dry preparation.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of ZnSO4 or ZnO supplementation of broiler diets on growth performance and loss of uric acid N and total N from manure. A total of 240, 1-d-old broiler males were used for this experiment. Each dietary treatment was replicated 3 times with 10 birds per replicate. Chicks were fed a control diet for the first 6 d and then treatment diets for the next 12 d. There were 8 dietary treatments: the control, CuSO4-20, ZnSO4-500, ZnSO4-1,000, ZnSO4-1,500, ZnO-500, ZnO-1,000, and ZnO-1,500 containing 0, 0, 500, 1,000, 1,500 ppm supplemental Zn as ZnSO4 and 500, 1,000, and 1,500 ppm supplemental Zn as ZnO, respectively. A 300-g sample of the broiler manure from each treatment was incubated in a pan for 3 wk at room temperature. After incubation, samples were collected for the measurement of total N and uric acid N. Weight gain, feed consumption, and feed efficiency of chicks fed the diets supplemented with 1,500 ppm Zn as ZnSO4 were significantly lower than those of the other treatments, whereas the ZnO treatments had no negative effects on growth performance. After the 21-d incubation, the uric acid-N levels of manure from chicks fed the ZnO-1,000 treatment were significantly higher than those of manure from chicks fed the ZnSO4-500. The manure from chicks fed the Zn-supplemented diets had significantly less total N loss compared with that from chicks fed the control. The manure from chicks fed ZnO-1,500 had significantly less total N loss than that from chicks fed the other treatment diets. This study indicated that the Zn treatments significantly reduced nitrogen loss in poultry manure, and ZnO could be a better Zn source to prevent nitrogen loss to the atmosphere without any detrimental effect on growth performance.

Abstract
We evaluated whether combined treatment with selegiline, a selective MAO-B inhibitor, and EGb 761, a standard extract of Ginkgo biloba, has synergistic effects against ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) in gerbils. Interestingly, we observed that pretreatment with EGb 761 significantly attenuated selegiline-induced hyperactivity. This finding paralleled striatal fos-related antigen immunoreactivity (FRA-IR) in mice. Four minutes of bilateral carotid artery occlusion caused substantial cell loss in the CA1 of the hippocampus 5 days post-ischemic insult. Pretreatment with EGb 761, with or without selegiline, significantly attenuated this neuronal loss. Combined treatment with EGb 761 plus selegiline was more efficacious in preventing this loss. Synaptosomal formations of protein carbonyl, lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde (MDA) + 4-hydroxyalkenal (4-HDA)), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the hippocampus remained elevated 5 days post-ischemic insult. The antioxidant effects appeared to be most significant in the group treated with EGb 761 plus selegiline. This combined treatment produced more significant attenuation of IRI-induced alterations in intramitochondrial calcium accumulation, the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, and mitochondrial Mn-superoxide dismutase-like immunoreactivity (Mn-SOD-IR) than either treatment alone. Our results suggest that co-administration of EGb 761 and selegiline produces significant neuroprotective effects via suppression of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction without affecting neurological function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been known that maternal oxidative stress during pregnancy plays an important role in fetal growth. However, the association between antioxidant vitamin levels and birth outcomes is not conclusive. We investigated the relationship between maternal serum levels of vitamins C and E during the second trimester and birth weight and length. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Outpatient-clinic of obstetrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital, South Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study subjects were 239 healthy, pregnant women who visited an obstetric clinic for antenatal care, and their singleton live births, in Seoul, Korea, between August 2001 and March 2003. We measured the levels of vitamins C and E in maternal serum during the period 24-28 gestational weeks. Each woman was interviewed for dietary intake by trained interviewers during the second trimester. RESULTS The serum concentration of maternal vitamin C during the second trimester was significantly associated with birth weight and length in the group of full-term deliveries. An increase of 1 microg/ml in the serum vitamin C level increased the birth weight by 27.2 g and the birth length by 0.17 cm. When we considered the levels of vitamins C and E together in the relationship with birth weight and length, we found that the heaviest birth weight and the longest birth length belonged to the group of upper vitamin C/upper vitamin E. However, dietary intake estimated by 24-h recall method was not a predictor of the levels of serum vitamins C and E. CONCLUSION We found that maternal serum vitamin C levels during the second trimester were positively correlated with birth weight and length in full-term babies. We also found that birth weight and length were highest when the levels of both vitamins C and E were high. Our results indicate the importance of antioxidant nutrient balance for pregnant women who are exposed to various oxidants through food, drinking water, or inhaled air.

Abstract
Virulence expression of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium under iron limited condition was measured by beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) assay using a hilA-lacZY fusion strain and calculated as Miller units. hilA-lacZY beta-galactosidase assays were performed in brain heart infusion (BHI) and minimal media (M9), after iron chelation with 2, 2-dipridyl and iron-supplementation respectively. Before performing virulence assays, concentrations of iron in the media were estimated using ferrozine. Iron content was found to be more in BHI (42.6 microg dL(-1)) as compared to M9 (10.03 microg dL(-1)). beta-gal activity of Salmonella Typhimurium in BHI was generally less than that observed in M9. After exposure to various combinations of iron chelator in BHI, hilA-lacZY activity only increased at the highest concentration of chelator (2001 microM) but decreased in M9 media for all iron concentrations when compared to controls with no iron amendment. These results indicate that iron availability may influence S. Typhimurium hilA expression.

Abstract
Ammonia gas produced from poultry manure can be a potential source of environmental pollution. Microbial uricase in poultry manure is an important target enzyme to reduce ammonia production because ammonia is mainly generated from the microbial decomposition of uric acid in the manure. Thus, the inhibition of microbial uricase is critical in preventing NH3 volatilization. A potential method of inhibiting uricase activity is the use of antibodies specific to microbial uricase. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate 1) the production of the uricase-specific egg yolk antibody (IgY) from immunized hens and 2) the effect of the uricase-specific IgY on the activity of uricase. A total of 12 Single Comb White Leghorn hens were injected intramuscularly with uricase from Arthrobacter globiformis. The hens were immunized a second and third time at 1 and 2 wk, respectively, after the initial injection. The production of uricase-specific IgY was first detected at 2 wk after the initial immunization, and levels increased more than threefold at 4 wk. The method including water extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and ethanol precipitation showed the most acceptable IgY purity and over 97% uricase-specific IgY recovery. Finally, the effect of the uricase-specific IgY on uricase activity was determined by a uricase assay. The slope ratio showed that the immune-IgY from the uricase-immunized hens and nonimmune IgY from nonimmunized control hens reduced uricase degradation by 58 and 43%, respectively, compared to the uricase treatment. The regression slope indicated that the immune IgY and nonimmune IgY treatments had a significant inhibitory effects on uricase activity compared to the uricase.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional composition and in situ degradation of hen mortality meals. There were four treatments: control autoclaved hen meal (C-HM), enzyme-treated, fermented, autoclaved hen meal (E-HM), NaOH-treated, fermented, autoclaved hen meal (NaOH-HM), and soybean meal (SBM). For the E-HM or NaOH-HM, hen mortality was treated with a feather digesting enzyme or NaOH to improve digestibility of feathers on the carcass. After the enzyme or NaOH treatment, treated hen mortality was preserved by a fermentation procedure. The crude protein levels of the C-HM and SBM were higher than the E-HM and NaOH-HM, and the concentration of fat in the C-HM was higher than the other treatments. Levels of Lys, Thr, Arg, Ile, Leu, Val, and Phe for the C-HM and SBM were higher than in the E-HM and NaOH-HM. The Met, Cys, and Gly levels in the C-HM were higher than the soybean meal. In situ ruminal degradation data showed that the C-HM had lower dry matter and crude protein degradation than the other treatments, whereas the E-HM or NaOH-HM was more susceptible to ruminal degradation. These results indicate that the C-HM has higher levels of crude protein, amino acids, and resistance to ruminal degradation, whereas the E-HM or NaOH-HM was more digestible to ruminal microorganisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous work has shown that teratogens such as hyperthermia (HS), 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide (4CP), and staurosporine (ST) induce cell death in day 9 mouse embryos by activating the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Key to the activation of this pathway is the activation of a caspase cascade involving the cleavage-induced activation of an initiator procaspase, caspase-9, and the downstream effector procaspase, caspase-3. For example, procaspase-3, an inactive proenzyme of 32 kDa is cleaved by activated caspase-9 to generate a large subunit of approximately 17 kDa and a small subunit of approximately 10 kDa. In turn, caspase-3 is known to target a variety of cellular proteins for proteolytic cleavage as part of the process by which dying cells are eliminated. Previous work has also shown that neuroepithelial cells are sensitive to teratogen-induced activation of this pathway and subsequent cell death whereas cells of the heart are resistant. Although caspase-3 is a key effector caspase activated by teratogens, two other effector caspases, caspase-6 and caspase-7, are known; however, their role in teratogen-induced cell death is unknown. METHODS Because cleavage-induced generation of specific subunits is the most specific assay for activation of caspases, we have used antibodies that recognize the procaspase and one of its active subunits and a Western blot approach to assess the activation of caspase-6 and caspase-7 in day 9 mouse embryos (or heads, hearts and trunks isolated from whole embryos) exposed to HS, 4CP, and ST. To probe the relationship between teratogen-induced activation of caspase-9/caspase-3 and the activation of caspase-6/caspase-7, we used a mitochondrial-free embryo lysate with or without the addition of cytochrome c, recombinant active caspase-3, or recombinant active caspase-9. RESULTS Western blot analyses show that these three teratogens, HS, 4CP, and ST, induce the activation of procaspase-6 (appearance of the 13 kDa subunit, p13) and caspase-7 (appearance of the 19 kDa subunit, p19) in day 9 mouse embryos. In vitro studies showed that both caspase-6 and caspase-7 could be activated by the addition of cytochrome c to a lysate prepared from untreated embryos. In addition, caspase-6 could be activated by the addition of either recombinant caspase-3 or caspase-9 to a lysate prepared from untreated embryos. In contrast, caspase-7 could be activated by addition of recombinant caspase-3 but only minimally by recombinant caspase-9. Like caspase-9/caspase-3, caspase-6 and caspase-7 were not activated in hearts isolated from embryos exposed to these three teratogens. CONCLUSIONS HS, 4CP and ST induce the cleavage-dependent activation of caspase-6 and caspase-7 in day 9 mouse embryos. Results using DEVD-CHO, a caspase-3 inhibitor, suggest that teratogen-induced activation of caspase-6 is mediated by caspase-3. In addition, our data suggest that caspase-7 is activated primarily by caspase-3; however, we cannot rule out the possibility that this caspase is also activated by caspase-9. Finally, we also show that teratogen-induced activation of caspase-6 and caspase-7 are blocked in the heart, a tissue resistant to teratogen-induced cell death.

Abstract
Inhibition of microbial uricase in poultry manure is critical to reduce NH3 volatilization, because hydrolysis of uric acid by microbial uricase is the first step in the production of NH3 gas in poultry manure. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of minerals on uricase activity and NH3 volatilization from poultry manure. In Experiment 1, an in vitro enzyme assay was used to evaluate the effects of Zn, Cu, Mg, and Mn on the activity of microbial uricase. There were three treatments: uricase, uricase + minerals, and uricase preincubated with minerals. Uric acid concentration was measured at 293 nm with a spectrophotometer. The results indicated that Zn and Cu greatly blocked the activity of microbial uricase (>90% inhibition), whereas Mg and Mn were less inhibitory. Experiment 2 was designed to evaluate the effect of ZnSO4 on the growth of uric acid-utilizing microorganisms by an in vitro assay. There were three treatments: control, ZnSO4 (10 mM), and ZnSO4 (50 mM). The results indicated that ZnSO4 significantly reduced the number of uric acid-utilizing microorganisms compared to the control. In Experiment 3, an NH3-trapping system was used to evaluate the effect of different levels of ZnSO4 on NH3 volatilization and nitrogen retention in poultry manure. Poultry manure (300 g) was mixed with 0, 0.15, 0.3, 1.5, 3, or 6 g ZnSO4 to create manure concentrations of Zn at 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1, or 2% (wt/wt), respectively. The 1 and 2% ZnSO4 treatments significantly increased manure uric acid and total nitrogen retention by reducing NH3 volatilization compared to the control during the 3-wk incubation.

Abstract
Staphylococcal infection-producing superantigens, such as staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), are presumed to play an important role of inflammatory processes in atopic dermatitis (AD). The aim of this study was to elucidate the apoptotic response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from children with AD. PBMCs from AD children were sampled and cultured with SEB stimulation. Levels of apoptosis and Fas expression were measured using flow cytometry; the soluble Fas ligand (sFasL) was also measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, and the expression of FasL in PBMCs was observed using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. There was no difference in the initial levels of apoptosis and Fas expression in precultured PBMCs of AD patients and healthy donors. After culturing for 48 h under SEB stimulation, the apoptosis level and Fas expression were significantly upregulated in the PBMCs from AD children compared with that from the normal controls. In patients, the sFasL was significantly increased, and the expression of FasL was observed in messenger RNA of peripheral monocytes. These results suggest that the Fas/FasL system is involved in the apoptosis induced by SEB in AD, with simultaneous increases in sFasL and expression of FasL.

Abstract
Control of nausea and vomiting is very important in determining patient compliance with cisplatin chemotherapy. A multicentre, randomized, single-blind study was conducted to compare the tolerability and efficacy of ramosetron with those of granisetron over 24 h following cisplatin administration to cancer patients. In eight study centres, a total of 194 adult patients were randomly assigned to receive either intravenous ramosetron 0.3 mg or intravenous granisetron 3.0 mg. The anti-emetic effect of ramosetron determined from the no-vomiting rate lasted longer, but there was no significant difference in the number of acute vomiting episodes or the severity of nausea between the two groups. In the tolerability evaluation, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups, except for a higher incidence of dull headache in the granisetron group. Ramosetron and granisetron appear to have equivalent efficacy and tolerability profiles, but the effects of ramosetron on the prevention of acute vomiting in patients undergoing cisplatin chemotherapy were longer lasting.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of chemical and enzymatic approaches to digest poultry feathers from dead birds for the purpose of recycling their nutrients as animal feeds. The experimental treatments were as follows: 1) control, 2) 24-h enzyme, 3) 24-h NaOH, 4) 2-h NaOH, and 5) 2-h NaOH and 24-h enzyme. The feather N solubilities of the control, 24-h enzyme, 24-h NaOH, 2-h NaOH, and 2-h NaOH and 24-h enzyme treatments were 0.91, 2.55, 78.83, 30.03, and 50.34%, respectively. The pepsin digestibilities of unsolubilized feather residues from the control, 24-h enzyme, 2-h NaOH, and 2-h NaOH and 24-h enzyme treatments were 4.67, 13.19, 55.83, and 59.08%, respectively. The in vitro amino acid digestibilities of the 2-h NaOH and 24-h enzyme treatment were significantly higher than the 24-h enzyme or 2-h NaOH (P < 0.05), except for alanine, whereas the 2-h NaOH treatment had significantly higher amino acid digestibility than the 24-h enzyme treatment (P < 0.05), except for methionine and histidine. Costs per kilogram of solubilized feather for the 24-h enzyme, 24-h NaOH, 2-h NaOH, and 2-h NaOH and 24-h enzyme treatments were $9.64, 4.72, 12.39, and 22.97, respectively. The results indicated that prolonged incubation with NaOH improved feather solubility, whereas further enzyme treatment after NaOH treatment increased feather solubility, pepsin digestibility, and in vitro amino acid digestibility.

Abstract
Glucocorticoids have been implicated in the exacerbation of several types of neurotoxicity in various neuropathological situations. In this study, we investigated the effect of a glucocorticoid dexamethasone on glucose deprivation induced cell death of immunostimulated rat primary astrocytes, which is dependent on the production of peroxynitrite from the immunostimulated cells [Choi et al. Glia, 31(2001) 155-164; J. Neuroimmunol. 112 (2001) 55-62]. Glucose deprivation in immunostimulated rat primary astrocytes results in the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) after 5 h and co-treatment with dexamethasone (1-1000 nM) dose-dependently increased LDH release. Treatment of the exogenous peroxynitrite generator SIN-1 (20 microM), plus glucose deprivation, also increased LDH release after 6 h and co-treatment with dexamethasone dose-dependently increased LDH release. A glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, RU-486, reversed the potentiation of cell death by dexamethasone. Glucose deprivation in immunostimulated cells decreased the intracellular ATP levels, which preceded LDH release from the cell, and co-treatment with dexamethasone dose-dependently potentiated the depletion of intracellular ATP levels. In addition, dexamethasone further deteriorated SIN-1 plus glucose deprivation-induced decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane potential in rat primary astrocytes, which was reversed by RU-486. The results from the present study suggest that glucocorticoids may be detrimental to astrocytes in situations where activation of glial cells are observed, including ischemia and Alzheimer's disease, by mechanisms involving depletion of intracellular ATP levels and deterioration of mitochondrial transmembrane potentials.

Abstract
Pretreatment of interferon-gamma and lipopolysaccharides made C6 glioma cells highly vulnerable to glucose deprivation. Neither 12 h of glucose deprivation nor 2-day treatment with interferon-gamma (100 U/ml) and lipopolysaccharides (1 microg/ml) altered the viability of C6 glioma cells. However, significant death of immunostimulated C6 glioma cells was observed after 5 h of glucose deprivation. The augmented death was prevented by dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) treatment during immunostimulation, but not by DHEA treatment during glucose deprivation. DHEA reduced the rise in nitrotyrosine immunoreactivity, a marker of peroxynitrite, and superoxide production in glucose-deprived immunostimulated C6 glioma cells. DHEA, however, did not protect glucose-deprived C6 glioma cells from the exogenously produced peroxynitrite by 3-morpholinosydnonimine. Further, DHEA did not alter the production of total reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide in immunostimulated C6 glioma cells. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the synthetic SOD mimetic Mn(III)tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin inhibited the death of glucose-deprived immunostimulated C6 glioma cells. In addition, a superoxide anion generator paraquat reversed the protective effect of DHEA on the augmented death. The data indicate that DHEA prevents the glucose deprivation-evoked augmented death by inhibiting the production of superoxide anion in immunostimulated C6 glioma cells.

Abstract
1. The putative effects of prenatal exposure to magnetic field (MF) have recently received much interest. In the present study, mice were exposed to a MF of 50 mT during gestation (0-19 days). 2. After the exposure was terminated, mothers and offspring were returned to normal laboratory conditions. We then determined changes in striatal levels of dopamine (DA) and its metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the offspring. 3. Our results indicate that prenatal exposure to MF increases levels of DA and DOPAC in the striatum at 4, 8 and 12 weeks postnatally.

Abstract
Between November 1990 and December 1992, 217 patients with stomach cancer were enrolled in a prospective study evaluating the prognostic value of DNA flow cytometry. Laurén's histological type was evaluated in 216 cases, of which 102 (47%) were of the diffuse type, 74 (34%) were of the intestinal type, and 40 (19%) were mixed type tumors. Laurén's histological type showed a significant correlation with age (p = 0.028), sex (p = 0.004), tumor size (p = 0.002), T stage (p = 0.006), overall TNM stage (p = 0.008), histological grade (p < 0.001), and tumor ploidy (p < 0.001). Intestinal type stomach cancer showed a significantly higher proportion of aneuploidy [diffuse vs. intestinal type; 41/102 (40%) vs. 52/74 (70%)]. After a median follow-up of 66.1 months (range, 29.6-78.1), 110 of 216 patients (51%) survived. Patients with intestinal type stomach cancer had a significantly better survival than did those with diffuse type stomach cancer (64% vs. 42% of patients surviving, p = 0.020). Our study suggests that there are biological differences between the two subtypes of Laurén's classification of stomach cancer in addition to the morphological differences. Laurén's classification should remain valid in future studies investigating the pathogenetic and clinical aspects of stomach cancer.
